MOTHER NATURE & THE CRETACEOUS-PALEOGENE EXTINCTION EVENT - aka, the asteroid that killed most of the dinosaurs.

i think i've gone into detail on this blog before about what happened to mother nature during that event -- tl;dr, it wounded her deeply on a physical level, and she had to lay dormant to heal right alongside the earth. she was in excruciating pain, and she had to "grow back", starting from her skeleton, then her muscles, etc. it was a gruesome process, and one she did by herself. this physical pain was nothing next to her emotional pain, as she had to endure feeling and watching her children die. before it was confirmed that mother nature had control over gravity (we stan an op queen 💚), it was easy to write this event off as a tragedy that was out of her control. but once that power was confirmed, i didn't really know how to reconcile this? like logically, she would've tried to kick away that asteroid the second she knew it was coming. so what happened...? headcanon time! while mother nature does command gravity, it is still gravity, meaning she was forced with an impossible choice when she knew that asteroid was coming: a) use an extreme force of gravity to knock the asteroid off its path, which would prevent it from impacting the earth! but it would absolutely knock the earth off of its delicate orbit around the sun, which would present... an entirely different, horrible situation. one where her children would absolutely still die, just slowly. b) let the asteroid hit the earth, have a mass extinction event, but! have the hope of regrowing, orbit intact. she ultimately chose the latter, since she technically wasn't on the earth when its orbit was solidified (hello heavy bombardment period), so orbit creation was honestly not something she felt she wanted to experiment with on her own planet and risk ruining the earth forever by depriving it of its goldilocks position. but even though this was an impossible choice, she of course blames herself every day. she thinks she chose the wrong option by picking the "coward's route."

MOTHER NATURE & PITCH BLACK - FEARLINGS.

in the books, we see mother nature act pretty cavalierly with pitch, outwardly showing no fear at all when speaking and speaking confidently about how she can destroy him if she wanted to. i think she's maybe referring to her powers over bending light and gravity, which i think would be enough to dispel fearlings as creatures of darkness. but...! we don't get any indication that she's done this before. so! i am going to take this omission and extrapolate a little -- the number one reason mother nature doesn't interact with her father as pitch black is neutrality, pure and simple. there are reasons for her neutrality, but that's a separate post. this is about fearlings and fear itself. mother nature has extreme dominion over the physical realm. but fearlings prey on something else entirely: the mental and emotional. these are about the only places in which mother nature has chinks in her armor, and thus why she is extremely careful with shielding herself. and that means, avoiding pitch all together. yes, she can dispel fearlings physically. but does she even want to engage them that way? not really! she'd rather not open herself up to their hunger for fear, because mother nature has plenty of fuel for them. tl;dr - mother nature isn't stupid. she wouldn't even get into a direct confrontation with pitch if she didn't absolutely have to, or if she didn't calculate the exact risk. because if pitch black, the king of nightmares and her own father, wanted to torment her with her own grief, there is a nonzero chance he could be successful. and miss girl does not mess with those odds if she can avoid it!

PHYSICAL FORM

it's very rare to have mother nature take her physical humanoid form -- if she is in that form in front of someone, that person is either extremely important to her or she has separate agenda that requires her humanoid form. otherwise, she prefers to stay incorporeal in various elements of nature for reasons that include: - comfort. she feels more like herself when she is in a chaotic, ever-shifting state. for someone who wants to be washed clean of her past, shifting shape feels natural and like a fresh start each time. - staying in control. if she is amorphous and fleeting, she cannot be perceived and therefore trapped. - having unprocessed feelings about her physical appearance. that face belonged to a person that simply doesn't exist anymore. she would rather not face the reasons why. - pure antisocial behavior. someone can't find her if they don't know what they're looking for, therefore she doesn't have to talk to anyone.

listening to the devil & the daughter off the k/ing arthur soundtrack inevitably makes me think of pitchiners ofc, but also just the fact that the guardians...simply do not fuck with mother nature. like of course, the king of nightmares is evil and scary but he has an agenda that everyone knows about and can predict what the mf is going to do bc that’s just. his gig. it’s a very clear-cut good vs. evil kind of thing, so its like. easier to control? i guess?

the book outright states that mother nature has a) her own agenda that they know fuck all about b) is unpredictable as hell. and i don’t think they say it outright but i TRULY do get the vibe that they are way more scared of mother nature for that reason. like she’s offering to work with us? oh great! that’s great! ....do not question it just smile and nod.

𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄  𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐎𝐍  𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐄

MOTHER NATURE’S fashion always looks clean, regal, and intimidating. whether she is in her full splendor as a goddess or in disguise as a human, seraphina’s fashion choices are striking. when not in mortal disguise, she uses the elements of whatever terrain from which she forms to adorn herself -- clouds, seawater, rotting leaves, etc. nature’s biodiversity is beyond comprehension, and thus the spectrum of her clothing mirrors this. this applies even to her human disguise: the clothing she wears is a reflection of the environment around her, which in this case, is human. specifically, one who looks like they have an incredible amount of power, aka, money. it’s luxury businesswear to its most expensive degree.

i’m thinking about how seraphina learned and is executing the most like. 5D level of strategy when it comes to both the physical and social structure of living things, and how each attribute has chain reactions when one living thing contact with other. for example, this animal is built for brute strength. this will be an advantage in this environment for this reason. however, brute strength would be its greatest weakness in this other environment. take a concept like that, and multiply it by a billion billions when you consider how many living things are on earth, not to mention higher intelligence beings like humans that also have a social component.

seraphina was alone for so long that she has very little lived experience of these kinds of nuances. only baseline survival ones, i.e., i am thin and weak, but i am fast, therefore i can win in a battle of dexterity. this puzzle of learning anything else has been, and will continue to be, something of great fascination in her passion for creation.

but she’s also so traumatized that analyzing and creating is her way of holding it all at arm’s length. yes, she knows how social cues work on a scientific level. no, she cannot and will not apply them to herself, because in her mind all that means is scrabbling and fighting her way to just survive. she will be brute strength when she needs to be. she will be quiet and soft when she needs to be. but she never thinks about what she wants to be outside of the context of ‘i need to survive and stay alive’. 

the closest answer we canonically have is freedom, a clean slate. but even then, i think that answer was more ‘i’ve been so hurt physically and mentally for so long that i can’t handle anything or anyone saying a god damn word to me. i’m going to go wild and i’m going to stay that way.’

tl;dr babygirl hyperanalyzing social and ecological traits like pieces on a chessboard does not preclude you from having to deal with your own !!!

SERAPHINA & THE MILITARY.

it is canon fact that seraphina is the daughter of the highest ranking general in the applicable society, and thus this is applied to every single verse i have for her. up until the age of 6, she was heavily raised in this merging of aristocracy and military culture, and considering she was as a precocious a child as she was, she absorbed a great deal of those details.

as kozmotis was an extremely doting father, he was always willing to answer any questions seraphina had about his life and work, and sometimes he was even able to take her out into the training fields when appropriate. he would speak extensively of military strategy, which thrilled seraphina, who was a lover of puzzles and the like. she also always got to put his medals on his jacket before going to social events, and he had a special set of medals made for her to put on her dress. but for seraphina, this was less a genuine interest in the military, and more of a desperation to spend more time with her father before he would inevitably leave. 

one on hand, it was a source of great pride for the young seraphina that her father was such a general. he left to protect the world from evil, and was a great hero capable of slaying all the monsters plaguing society of that day. but what was also true was that it was a source of great pain for her. kozmotis was away for long stretches of time, which weighed heavily on the extremely sensitive and emotional seraphina. it would cause tantrums, long nights spent crying, and outbursts of anger. she was even known to shout things like “i don’t care about other people daddy saves, i don’t care, i don’t care, i don’t care! i want daddy home!”

this, while not true of a child who was naturally generous, is extremely telling of how her opinion is shaped. when her life transitions traumatically into solitude at age 6, the outbursts of anger at her father’s absence turn to bitterness. what kind of wretched institution takes a father away from his child so consistently and for so long? why can’t people defend themselves and let her have her father back. or worse, what if the military was just an excuse for him to get away from the daughter he clearly didn’t care about enough to find? thoughts like these snowballed heavily until her eventual mental breakdown at age 16, and thus subsequent stay in a torture prison chamber.

seraphina as people know her now will find that she doesn’t care about military forces. like most things, she avoids them, both physically and in conversation. while it is an emotional sore point, she also genuinely just doesn’t give a fuck about them. they have nothing to do with her agenda at large, so what’s the point. she’s true neutral through and through, so her and hers are all she cares about. however, she will have stronger opinions if anyone close to her was heavily steeped in that life. she would encourage them to stay away, simply because “honor and duty operate on the principle that other people have them. most don’t.” for seraphina, you take care of yourself and your loved ones, and that’s it.

all this being said! some may notice that seraphina is completely relaxed on a battlefield or in a training ground, whether she knows it or not. she’s familiar with terminology, strategy, rhythm of life, and culture to some extent, and thus is able to keep up in conversations well enough.

wouldn’t it be fun and funky if depending on the inquisitor’s relationship with the emerald witch, it affects where she’ll be during trespasser...

high approval - the inquisitor can count on her help to stop solas. she, however, “dies” protecting them. neutral approval - she is simply not there. good luck inquisitor but she's DEEP in the crossroads and she is not coming out... ofc there are cats in the crossroads why is this confusing. low approval - she sides with solas over a hatred of the elvhen mages who proclaimed godhood and imprisoned her. she is “killed” by the inquisitor and their party.

man... playing dai lately has just. Reinforced my thoughts re: seraphina and red lyrium. she hates that shit so much, as a mage who wants to keep in constant control of her mental faculties, the paranoia just skyrockets to the point where if the inquisitor takes her along to quests involving the stuff, she will hang back. if approval levels are high enough, she will tell them how she went near the stuff Once for curiosity’s sake, and as soon as the heard *~the voices, she turned around and never looked back.

i always draw sera with a green color scheme but like i said in my last post, she wears all the colors of nature -- it just depends on her surroundings. but i guess if i were to assign “baseline” colors for her, they would be jewel tones. deep, mysterious forest green. the dark, rich reds of blood. unnervingly deep navy, like the ocean. the sandy golds of deserts at sunset. you get it.

thinking about how many orphans would be in the inquisition’s care after haven... and how a lot of them would be terrified of seraphine in her huge halla mask. but there are always weird kids who are drawn to it, and since seraphina can sometimes be found in communal spaces ( because she’s nosy and likes to eavesdrop on people ), one or two will occasionally go up to her and ask to touch it.

she will let them every time, even though she’s pretty confused by this. she’s so used to having everyone just be scared of her or treat her like shit, so seeing this innocent force like? be drawn to her? not to mention her trauma with her own deceased children haha she wouldn’t really know much else to do with them besides let them hang out near her and answer any questions they have.

from a gameplay perspective, this will start with seeing children petting a mangled-looking black cat in various places around skyhold, and only after some time will this change into seeing the emerald witch sitting with one or two toddlers near her, playing with her halla’s mask and the trinkets on it.

sera will not send nudes on principle just. because she doesn’t think of her body in terms of pretty / ugly a lot of the time ( that’s how deep the self-loathing goes ) -- however, once in a comfortable relationship, she won’t really send nudes so much as like...coy shots adjacent to nudes. like if she just changed the angle or just pulled off a bit more clothing, you would be able to see something. 

i.e. you know she’s wearing a swarovski-esque choker and nothing else, however you will see nothing explicit.

is she being shy? coy? the world will never know, but i’ll tell you what, the quality of the pics are insane enough to be perfume ads.

i think the reason why the relationship between d/ream and hob makes me go so insane is that seraphina also! does not understand the point of relationships! not only is she old as hell, but what relationships she did have all those eons ago truly fucked her over! for her, there is no empirical evidence that any kind of relationship is worth it. and look at her! she’s existed for this long by herself and she’s fine -- so what’s the point?

she also does not understand when the few people she encounters actually like her. this goes for any verse, goddess or not. especially if that person is like. a good person! and enjoys life! why would someone who is very much steeped in society and relationships and all that want anything to do with a creature like her? she’s quiet. she’s not a good person. she hardly even smiles. these people have pick of anyone they want, whenever they want, and they pick her?

yes, a lot of this is low self esteem on sera’s part. but she’s so emotionally distant from her own needs that it doesn’t even view it as a “oh im worthless” thing. in fact, she views it as simple fact. she is a monster. and people don’t pick monsters.
