Another Life, Another Adventure
Pairing: Lee Scoresby x reader
Warnings: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2!!!! Language, angst, violence, too many flashbacks, suggestive material, fluff (shockingly) hurt/sad shit, and buckle your seatbelts because this shit is a rollercoaster that just goes DOWN!
Ahaha, we are coping this way, 3.2k words baby. I’ve never written a story so fast! But yeah, lemme know if you want to be tagged! PLEASE give feedback, it’s greatly appreciated and I need assurance that my writing isn’t shit because I’m desperate. So....anyway, good luck? Because yall already know where this is heading, but I’m not going to put it in the warnings because ya know, SPOILERS?
There was no point in arguing, not with the magisterium on their tail, not with Lee’s injured foot, and not with Lyra in need of safety. Jopari even tried countering, insisting that there had to be another way. Y/N couldn’t say that she disagreed. After all the blinding chaos they’ve escaped, there had to be another way around this.
“I’ve made my choice,” Lee huffed, giving a stern look at Jopari. “You’re it. Now find the bearer.”
Y/N and the shaman shared a look. They both knew of the promise he made with Lee, and they both knew how important it was for Lyra to be protected.
“You’re a good man.”
“Just remember your promise. I love that little girl like a daughter.” Lee fumbled with his shotgun, loading the bullets and talking fast.
“I remember. You have my word. I’ll make sure she’s protected by the knife.”
“That’s all I need to know…” He stuck his hand out and firmly shook Jopari’s hand, both nodding, both knowing of the rough journey ahead. As the shaman stood up, he hesitated and it caused Lee to look up at him before looking at her with a raised brow.
Y/N took a deep inhale before nodding for him to go along.
“Y/N-”
“You’re out of your mind if you think-”
“Y/N, go!” He gripped her arm and it only made her push back.
“No, no! You listen to me!” Soft hands held his face in a firm grip. Y/N was close and made sure to hold eye contact. “You forget what I said at the start of this? We’re a package, which means I go where you go. I didn’t leave my home in Texas just to get all the way here and leave you, Lee!”
The day he approached her with the proposition of going back to find Iroek was still fresh in her mind. Y/N had seen the aeronaut be ambitious before, but the determination in his eyes was unstoppable that day. Since then they were up in that balloon for weeks, months with each other.
“You want me to come along?”
“I could use the company.”
“And what will people say when they see you with a leash on a so-called ‘townswhore,’ hmm?”
“Darling, since when have I ever cared what others think? I ain’t a Prince Charming myself.”
Though neither of them could predict that that small journey would lead to something much bigger and more complicated than expected, they still didn’t leave each other’s side. Not when Iroek refused to talk, not when Lord Faa made snarky comments on how helpful someone with Y/N’s type of occupation could actually be, and not when they were separated from Lyra.
Lee squeezed her wrist and bowed his head. Y/N took that as he had given up arguing, and she turned to look at Jopari staring in discomfort. Hester and Owen hunched over each other, having their own way to keep each other safe. They all probably made quite the scene.
“Don’t worry about us. Just...go protect Lyra, please?” Y/N waved him away with a nod, and soon Jopari was out of sight, leaving them with a soft goodbye.
How they caught up so quickly, they’ll never figure out, but bullets kept flying back and forth. Only minutes later Lee turned back to Y/N, holding up his pistol and sighing, “I’m out.”
“Let’s move, then, c’mon.” She held out her hand and pulled him up, watching Lee set down his hat and leave behind yet another meaningful piece to him.
Guards were still yelling, voices getting only closer. They trudged through the forest, Hester and Owen leading the way. However it was only a matter of time before Lee couldn’t bear to walk on his damaged bone any longer. Y/N felt her entire body shaking, loading up her gun with her last round of ammo before listening to what Lee was saying.
“Remember the games we used to play when we were little?” He glanced at Hester as he shifted.
“The Alamo.”
Feeling her stare on him, Lee turned to Y/N, chuckling, “The Alamo. Taking turns being Danes in French.”
“They’re still coming,” Owen stepped down from his perched stance on the rock, burrowing into Y/N’s side.
“How many bullets do we have left?” He was breathing harder, and it did nothing to help Y/N’s nerves. It was like a clock ticking in her head. It was a gut feeling, this was all so much different then when they would get into a natural bar fight, or even when she had to watch Lee get abused from the magisterium and Coulter. When she looked at Owen, she knew he felt it, too.
“About thirty,” Hester drew her ears back in fear, while Lee only nodded determinedly. His eyes met Y/N’s and she cleared her throat.
“I got one round left,” She whispered. Lee reached down and squeezed her hand before sighing.
“Well, let’s make every single last one count then,” With that he cocked his gun and turned to shoot, Y/N doing the same.
On each side of the stump they took their stance, like a routine, both shooting at their respective sides. Hester helped by calling out where to aim, and Owen did his best to do the same.
“I’m running out!” Y/N hated to admit it, but when she ran out that only meant for one shooter, and who knows how good that could go.
“Me too,” Lee kept firing.
“Don’t think about that!” Owen chirped.
“What should we think about?” She almost missed one, her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
“Think about anything. Think about bacon. Just keep shooting!” Hester spoke before returning to yell where to shoot at next.
“And who are you?”
“Y/N L/N, we’re sort of a package. I go where he goes.”
“And what, exactly, do you bring to the table Miss L/N?”
“I might not be able to fly, but I’m a pretty good shot.”
Y/N was overwhelmed, between the gunfire and the yelling and her heart beating fast and the dangerous thoughts in her head, she wasn’t going fast enough. Even with her limited count, she was going slower than Lee. One guard was on the top, and just as she was about to shoot, he fired to her left.
“Y/N, go high!” Owen called, yet it was a little late.
The sharp clip shot right next to her, and with Lee doubling over only meant one thing.
“Lee!” Y/N yelled all while shooting at the man behind the boulder. She crouched behind the stump and felt her eyes grow.
“It’s nothing big! A bullet clipped your scalp, but no great damage!” Hester urged, voice shaky. He held onto the top of his head as blood ran down the side. There was no sugar coating how bad this was getting. Y/N only had one bullet left, using it to shoot the guy who was only coming closer.
“Did you count how many fell?” He was taking his time, why was he taking his time? Tears welled up in Y/N’s eyes as she listened to shots fire all around her, watching Owen tremble at each round.
“This is my fault isn’t it?” Hester whined.
“How’d ya figure?”
“I’ve always stopped you both before.”
“You always pushed us,” Lee locked the gun and looked at his daemon with concern. It made Owen flap his wings in a protective manner, even though he stopped being able to fly straight a while ago.
“Only when there’s an adventure on the way-”
“Hester,” Lee huffed softly. “There were always adventures.”
Y/N bit down on her lip as she agreed; there always was an adventure.
“You know, if you were going to start trouble, you could’ve at least finished it!”
“Well who said I haven’t yet? You know I love a good chase, doll.”
It was like a film before her eyes; from the moment the two first met there was always a thrill, whether it be them on the run or her own feelings for the aeronaut. Her mother once told her that Y/N would find a good husband in a local bookkeeper, that way she would live a simple life, stay far from any danger. It was almost laughable how much danger she had been put through since meeting Lee.
“I totally understand now,” Y/N shook her head in admiration. “Living this life up in the stars...it’s beautiful.”
“You’d think it would grow old, but it’s a different picture every night.”
She looked back at Lee, smirking. “I’d love to see it.”
“So stay.”
From her first steps into the balloon, Y/N found it comforting. The small home Lee had made for himself up in the sky had quickly grown on her, just like the man himself.
“You’ll find a change of mind sooner or later.”
“What little faith you have of me. And how dare you try to insinuate how I should feel-”
“I’m not insinuating anything, I’m just...I’ve got jobs, I’ve got places to go and I can’t settle just yet.”
“Then I’ll follow you.”
“Now why would you want to do that?”
“If you want me to leave so badly, then say so. But I finally found a life that excites me and I don’t plan on giving that up.”
And even after the years of knowing one another, and the months of traveling together, those feelings were never labeled. Although two beds turned to one, and outsiders' judgment was unique, neither Lee or Y/N dared fixed it. Lyra even asked about the travelers status, and while being one rambunctious and curious girl, she luckily got distracted easily as Y/N pushed the subject away.
The two have been through hell and back, each seeing the other at their weakest while never being one to judge. They both had too many faults, there was no judgement to be made to the other. Maybe that’s what made them so similar. Maybe that’s why they were so drawn to each other.
Her dangerous acts she was thinking of were as equally dangerous as losing focus, as she felt a sudden pain strike her right below her collarbone. Owen cried out and they both fell to the ground. It took her a moment to recover from the shock, but she eventually reached down to feel the damage, a knowing liquid already flooding out slowly.
“Lee…”
The aeronaut swallowed at her broken voice, watching the blood escape from her wound. The distraction only caused him to lose aim, and he lost his balance as a bullet hit his shoulder. He fell onto his back, letting out pants and huffs.
“C’mon, tough guy, too old for a fight?”
“Let me catch my breath, will ya?”
“You can tap out. I won’t hold it against you.”
“Maybe, I was just thinking of other activities,” He towered over her as his eyes grew dark. Y/N swallowed before chuckling.
“Like what?”
Lee pushed a strand of hair behind her ear before leaning down and taking the lobe into his mouth. She rested her hands on his chest as her head fell onto his shoulder. As his lips dragged up the shell of her ear, his hands took her own and slowly brought them down to his belt. Just as Y/N was about to unbuckle the fabric, her arm was twisted behind her. Her chest fell down onto the railing before her and she winced.
“Word of advice: never get distracted when it comes to your life.”
Call it the wrong time and place, but as Y/N stared into his brown eyes, she found herself reminiscing. She was always bad at holding eye contact, it made her feel so small. Yet, every time she looked into these orbs she felt safe, she felt warm. She wished she looked into his eyes more....
But the look he was giving her now...it was endearing.
It was almost like he was doing the same as her, taking it all in one last time.
“Lee,” Hester gasped out. “The clout pine. Maybe you could call her to this world.”
Of course, Serafina said that she would help, that she would be here. As Lee struggled with removing it from his pocket, Y/N let out a whimper as the pain moved to her shoulder. The aeronaut glanced at the noise and frowned.
“Serafina Pekkala, I beg you,” A bullet rang from behind them as Lee raised his hand to the sky. “Come help us.”
Owen moved into her chest and Y/N wrapped him up into her arms as she found his soft feathers comforting.
“Think that’s enough?”
“Let’s hope it is…” Y/N coughed. She tried moving into a seated position, but only managed to scoot up a couple inches. Lee stared at her carefully, wanting to reach out and help her, do anything he could to stop the bleeding, to make her comfortable, make her feel safe. But he wasn’t doing so good himself, having three bullets already break his flesh. He scooted back and took hold of his gun. Just as he was raising it up, another fire went off, Lee falling back again, this time with a bullet into his chest.
Y/N had seen lots of things in her life; she was fortunate enough to travel the world, she’d seen great sights she could’ve never dreamed of seeing before. She watched her mother slowly become sicker and sicker, saw her friends be dragged away from her, watched someone she cared for greatly fall right out of her arms to the ground below.
Despite all the crazy, disastrous things she’d seen before, nothing could compare to this. Nothing could compare to her seeing her lover in agony, so helpless. He lost all the light in his eyes, his brow was furrowed, and for once in his life his guard was down.
“Lee, it’s okay.” But he kept resisting, he kept denying that there was no more fight left in him.
“I have to do it for Lyra-”
“Jopari made his promise, Lee,” Y/N reached out her hand, lowering his gun. “We did what we could.”
He shook his head, releasing a shaky breath and taking her hand in his.
Whether he liked it or not, they reached the point of no return.
“Y’know ever since I met you I’ve lived on the edge?” Y/N let out a wet chuckle.
“Is it really necessary?”
“Can’t run around these parts without learning how to shoot, kid.”
“Well, that could only mean that there’s danger ahead.”
“What? You scared of a little danger? Where’s the fun in that?”
“It’s...it’s not bad, I actually grew to love it. All those times we shared together, all those times I had to save your ass, all the times you saved mine.”
“You’re gonna end up dead one day if you keep runnin’ around so recklessly, dumbass.”
“Ah, that’s why I keep you around, ain’t it?”
“What I said before,” She winced as she leaned closer to him. “About leaving my home in Texas. Turns out i never left my home...I found it.”
“I was worried about you.”
“I was just out for a walk, Lee, nothing to worry about. I’m a big girl, I can handle myself.”
“No, Y/N, not around here. Just...if I lose you, I’ll never forgive myself, alright? Like you said, we’re a package now.”
“You changed me for the better...look at all the shit we did, you let me touch the sky, Lee,” A tear ran down her cheek. She could see Hester moving closer to Owen out of the corner of her eye.
“How hard could being an aeronaut be, anyways?”
“Ha, it’s cute that you think it’s an easy job.”
“All I ever see ya do is fiddle with knobs.”
“Those knobs get us safely to land. Would you rather we just keep floating all day and night?”
“I wouldn’t mind it...it’s lovely up here.”
“How far we flew…” Lee cupped her face, his own eyes growing wet. There were so many emotions running through his mind that he couldn’t put into words, and that scared him. He could literally feel his last breaths coming and he wouldn’t be able to tell Y/N how he felt.
“Why don’t you care?”
“Why should I? Does it look like I have such a high reputation? Y/N, I would never leave you. And screw what anyone else thinks.”
“I’ve...never had anyone push it away like it doesn’t matter before?”
“People could think we were swingers for all I care. Not going to change what I think about you, darling.”
“Exactly, look at us,” Her hands stopped shaking, gripping his wrists with one hand. “Lee, I wouldn’t replace this for the world, good and bad.”
“S’not enough though, is it? Love? Doesn’t mean you won’t hurt her? Doesn’t mean she’s safe with you, it doesn’t work that way.”
“What could you possibly know about love, Mr. Scoresby? You don’t have children, no wife, just a narrow-minded whore, yearning for an escape.” Ms. Coulter crept towards him like a predator. All Y/N could do was helplessly watch from the corner of the room.
“You’re wrong...because I love Lyra.”
Lee mustered all the strength he could to move forward to capture her lips.
They both put everything they could into that one kiss, their final kiss.
“I’ve never felt so safe before…”
“Well, I’m glad I make you feel safe, sweetheart.”
“Do you...does this change anything for us? What does this mean, exactly?”
“...It doesn’t have to change anything, really.” Lee wrapped his arms around her naked body and kissed her forehead. Y/N wasn’t ready for things to change then.
Lee pushed and pushed, hoping whatever God was out there that he was able to mold his feelings into Y/N. She deserved to know, she deserved to be loved. She was loved. He felt her pressing her lips harder, and warm air traveled into his mouth, making him pull back gasping.
“Don’t do that, don’t you go before I do!” He sobbed, reaching out for her one last time and instead feeling his demon nuzzle into his free hand.
“I love you…” She whispered, giving him a small smile as she pulled Owen closer to her body.
“We did good,” Owen interrupted before closing his eyes.
“We’re a-helping Lyra…” Hester whimpered, looking at Lee for a response, a confirmation, anything. Instead all she saw were tears coming out of his eyes, blood seeping from his head and taking a deep breath.
His mouth wouldn’t move, it felt like his lungs were shattering. His body was shrinking and everything inside him felt tighter. His final cue was here, yet nothing was escaping. His brain was vibrating, ironically. His entire being was going into panic mode and the last final seconds were starting to count down. His mind was screaming at him to say the words, say something to her, something meaningful. Something that would make her know that she wasn’t just traveling with a known theft, that he wanted her to come along for a reason. That he wanted to build a home with her, build a family with her. Wanted to take her into his arms and kiss her until she knew that everyone who crossed their path was wrong about them. They weren’t just a thieving aeronaut and a townswhore, but two people in love.
His eyes started to droop shut, and when he opened them again, Owen was gone, just flurries of white particles floating before him.
Lee stared into lifeless orbs in front of him, feeling Hester’s cold body drift away from his own.
“Y/N?”
“Yes, Lyra?”
“You travel with Mr. Scoresby?”
“I do, yes.”
“What’s he like?”
“He’s...typical, really. At least for me. But he knows what he’s doing. He’s full of determination, though he might come off as a self-righteous smartass when you first meet him. But he’s a good man. So devoted, and surprisingly, he’s pretty funny. But don’t tell him I said that! Lee takes risks, and is so....he’s open. He may not let it show often, but he really does care for you. Just like he cares about what happens to these missing children, and what happens after this. In the mornings, he sings these songs, and I know he does it to annoy me. But it’s actually...it’s nice waking up like that. He keeps me on my toes when I’m down, or stressed. He’s strong, and I’ve never met anyone like him before. You know, he actually took me out of my shell? Because he could see right through me, and knew that I had this desire to get out of Texas and have...a story to tell, you know? One worth the time. I’ll never understand it, but Lee can read me better than anyone I know…”
“Do you love Mr.Scoresby?”
“Love..love is a strong word, Lyra.”
“He loves you. I can tell.”
Y/N looked to see the aeronaut talking to Hester, small smile on his face, eyes wide as he spoke. He matched her stare eventually, and waved a hand. She chuckled and waved back.
“No, no it’s not like that, Lyra. He doesn’t love me…”

Summary: Once Upon a Time, Angel Reyes knew you and you knew him. Once Upon a Time, Angel Reyes loved you and you loved him. In him, your teenage hopes and dreams found a home, a safe haven. Angel Reyes took your love and spat it back out at you with malice. Once Upon a Time Angel Reyes accepted a tender, fragile love and burned it down. This is the story of a man trying to rekindle his first love from the ashes.
A/N: Back with a new blog. Just trying to rekindle my love of writing fanfics.
Chapter 2
Ghost One: EZ
EZ felt uncomfortable, uneasy and unsure. All in all, he was a bundle of nerves, and wasn’t sure why. There was something in the air here. It felt heavy. Heavy enough to push down on his shoulders and urge him to keep on his bike, and ride back home. The whole trip up to Santa Ana Angel had been quite. Angel quiet was already a bit worrisome. It wasn’t that Angel was a blabbermouth, but he at least was conversational. The lack of it just put EZ that much more on edge.
The only thing Angel made clear during the trip was that he wanted to go to this particular mash-up of East Coast Bodega meets Southern sandwich shack, which somehow ended up in a city on the West Coast. The muscles beneath EZ’s skin itched, signaling that they were ready for a fight that EZ wasn’t sure was coming, or where it’d be coming from. He was too wound up and didn’t have clear reasoning as to why. So, he did the only thing that he could do to calm his nerves. He observed.
EZ watched his older brother from no more than two steps behind him. The smells in the shop weren’t notes he was accustomed to picking up. Cayenne, paprika, garlic, onion and something herbed mixed with hot grease and possibly fresh bread. The store’s modest door matched its modest interior. Floors that were just this side of white, due to age, but still clean. Aisles of snack foods, a cooler housing water, pop, beer, and liquor on the back wall gave way to a counter clearly meant to take orders for the food that was cooked in the open kitchen behind it. After noting and marking his surroundings EZ’s gaze shifted back to Angel.
Angel looked to the figure familiar to him behind the counter. The man’s shoulders were still broad but what once was a slim waistline had widened a hare and the pitch-black hair was now salt and pepper. The voice that called “be with you in a moment!” Sounded gruffer. In short. Your father had aged. Well, those things had aged. He turned around with a smile gracing his face. The skin dark enough to match the ebony keys on a piano, remained unlined.
When his eyes settled on Angel the smile dimmed and the corners of his mouth dropped into a straight line. His next words were measured. “Thought I made myself clear the last time I saw you, Angel Reyes.”
EZ stepped up beside his brother making it clear to the man that Angel was not alone. Angel simply answered: “You did”. The older man sighed. Leaving the shrimp he was breading resting on the counter with his hands on either side of it. “Listenin must not be your strong suit.”
“No, sir. It isn’t” Again his answer was simple but respectful. EZ looked between Angel and the man whose name he still didn’t know. He grabbed onto the sides of his kutte, and continued to watch in silence.
Confused but willing to wait until either was willing to explain.
“What you want, son? You ain’t do enough damage the last time you was here?” The more the older man talked the more his accent bled through. Deep and southern, but unfamiliar enough to be somewhat hard for EZ to properly place. It was a blend of regions. Heavy on Texas but possibly Louisiana? What concerned EZ more was his line of questioning. Not so much that Angel did something, but something enough that had this man issuing a warning to him. Angel hadn’t been in Santa Ana for at least ten years, that EZ knew of. What had he done, that a decade later, had this man reminding him of a conversation just as old.
Angel remained silent for just a moment. He was contemplating his words, in the end he settled for “I just need to see her.” It was clearly the wrong answer.
“Hell no!” The man bellowed. “Heeeellll no” he drug the first word out. “You damn near ruined her, and me and her mama were left to pick up the pieces!” His nostrils flared, and his eyes squinted in a dangerous way EZ recognized. This man would if possible do serious harm to Angel if he could. “She ain’t here and even if she was” He raised a flour-covered hand and pointed a finger at Angel. “you’d best keep away from her.”
“With all due respect, sir. I’ve stayed away as long as I intend to.” Angel tapped EZ on the shoulder and motioned to the door without another word.
“Angel Reyes, I meant what I said. I find out you been anywhere near her and I’ll whip yo ass like I should have ten years ago!” He hollered at their backs. “You keep from ‘round my baby!” He continued as the bell above the door jingled confirming that Angel and EZ had gone.
Once on his bike EZ looked back into the store and saw the man standing in the doorway, shirt and apron covered in flour, reminding him of Felipe. EZ looked to his older brother who held the man’s gaze and revved his bike. EZ followed suit and they pulled off.
Back at the clubhouse, before they walked inside EZ asked. “Care to tell me what the hell that was about?”
Angel looked to his brother, and released a bone-weary sigh. “Not really, but I don’t have a choice.” Angel sat his helmet on his lap, his eyes glued to it. “You remember when pops sent me here to try and get me away from the MC?”
EZ nodded the affirmative.
Angel sighed again. “Well, Pops didn’t know that there was a chapter here.”
EZ nodded again. Obviously aware since that’s why they were in Santa Ana in the first place.
Angle continued. “There was a girl. Her aunt was married to a dude in the MC, Shooter”
“Wait-” EZ tried to cut in but Angel raised his hand to hold EZ’s comments.
“Shooter’s daughter and the girl were close and she came around. Actin’ all shy and shit.” Angel laughed to himself clearly reflecting back on a long-ago occurrence. “Anyway, I was feeling her and she was feeling me. Shooter and his old lady, Shauna were cool with it, but her father” He huffed. “Well, you saw that.”
“The crazy thing is. I can’t blame him. You knew how I was back then. Cocky as fuck and just as dumb.”
“So, Shooter and Shauna were cool, right?” He continued without giving EZ a chance to answer. “She barely got to come around. Her dad didn’t want her around us... See, the way he had it.” Angel raised his hand further explaining it. “Her pops knew how he wanted her life to play out. It didn’t include some ain’t shit biker. So she could end up like his sister.” He finished in air quotes and mock accent of your father’s. Angel went quiet after that.
EZ noticed the slight slump in his shoulders and decided to leave well enough alone for the time being. He remembered when Felipe shipped Angel off to stay with a friend in a last-ditch effort to reign in his wayward son. Felipe had only pushed Angel further to the MC. In Santa Ana, he’d met with another chapter and gotten to see another side of the brotherhood and comradery that came with being a Mayan.
Angel recounted some of the antics he’d gotten up to in Santa Ana. The girls, the drinking, fights all of that he’d told EZ about. What Angel didn’t tell him about was this particular girl. A girl that was niece to the current Prez of the Santa Ana Chapter, and clearly off-limits according to some of her family. What Angel didn’t say, hadn’t said, but definitely showed was that he’d been, if he wasn’t now, in love with the girl. What Angel hadn’t told EZ was what happened with the mystery girl and why her father was threatening Angel, still pissed ten years later.
It did help explain one thing. Shooter had been a little cool in his welcoming to Angel. He hadn’t flat out ignored the younger man. He had given the usual spiel when welcoming members of another chapter. They were having a party tonight welcoming them that was sure to include all the bells and whistles of one in Santo Padre. EZ just couldn’t help but notice the subtle tension between the two. The scrutinizing gaze that Shooter gave Angel when the man wasn’t looking, and the unsaid words between them of a wrong that EZ was starting to think Angel had committed.
Bishop sent Angel and EZ to Santa Ana under the false-ish guise of going in his stead to help celebrate a new prospect being patched over. Things had been heating up in Santo Padre which Bishop was using as an excuse to get Angel out for awhile. In truth, Angel hadn’t quite been himself since Adelita pushed him away to save him. With that fresh on the man’s mind EZ wasn’t sure if sending him back to the place of another lost love was the right move. Although he was sure this was something Bishop didn’t know about.
EZ drew in a deep breath and walked inside the clubhouse and immediately grabbed a drink. Without a doubt, he knew this was going to be a long weekend.

61.
I took in a deep breath; I had a restless night and it’s my nerves I think. I mean tomorrow I will be a married woman; this is actually happening this time. I feel extremely nervous about this but not as nervous as my mother, she is so emotional that she is giving me away which to me is perfect because I want someone that loves and adores me to do this, it doesn’t really bother me that Thomas is not doing it. It was sweet that my uncle offered, he offered to walk me down the aisle, it was nice to hear that from him and I can’t thank them enough with the love they show me constantly, I do need them to stop getting so emotional on me though. Looking over at Maurice asleep still, it’s early and I just can’t sleep. We have really narrowed down the list, we literally have space. Maurice is dead against everyone, it’s me saying no let them come. With my family, the Latin side. I have my grandparents, my aunties and uncles and that is it, Maurice said no to anything else and out of my mom’ side, just auntie Gloria. Maurice is eliminating any person that hates him, Gloria is harmless, so he says. But it’s going to be a very intimate wedding, and to me that is perfect. We are having the people that are happy for us and I am so excited, the Saudi prince is coming too and he always likes me, he has the utmost respect for me which is nice to see but I wonder which wife he will bring with him. God, I am so nervous. I am happy and excited too because I am marrying my best friend, I can’t wait to just grow old with him. Pushing the covers off of me, let me just get out of bed because I will get to a point where I will just wake him just to annoy him. Getting up to sit on the edge of my bed, touching my stomach. I can’t wait for this baby to arrive; I feel like I am ready for it so I am excited.
“Hey, Robyn. Bonita, baby” vaguely hearing Maurice say “mhmm” I groaned out moving “mommy don’t want to wake up, baby. Wake up” opening my eyes slowly “I fell asleep” looking around me, clearly I did on the couch “yeah, Reign was crying in the crib but I didn’t see you in the bed. I saw you here asleep with the TV on, you good?” Maurice asked, nodding my head as I stretched out “yeah I am, I couldn’t sleep in the bed but clearly can sleep” Maurice lowered Reign to me “what are you doing?” I questioned “I want to have a shower and stuff, also I need to pee” nodding my head “morning Reign” Maurice gently placed Reign on me but she was quick to crawl on me “woah!” grabbing her legs “you out here trying to crawl on my new love?” she whined out because she can’t move, letting her legs go and lifted her up myself, she took her pacifier out “give mommy a kiss?” poking my lips out, Reign headbutted my lips “thanks” she put her pacifier back in her mouth and then rested her head on my chest “you are a big girl now” wrapping my arms around her “you want snuggles with mommy” I swear I thought I wasn’t tired but clearly I am, I probably got bored of watching Kim Kardashian.
Smiling at Reign yanking Rich’ covers from him, this man is still here sleeping on the couch “hey, I am naked here stop it” I hope the fuck not but Reign still proceeded to pull at the covers, she wants them off “I am joking, I have sweatpants on and a tee, nobody wants to see this white body now” Rich let the covers fall “oh no!” he gasped, Reign looked at me laughing “you are naughty, she does it to Maurice but the difference with that is he can be naked sometimes. Nobody wants to see that” Reign is trying to put it back on him now “no, it’s ok. I don’t want it” Rich got up from the couch “well I mean clearly you want to see that, I mean” he laughed pointing at me and Reign “you got pregnant again, so I guess you like that shit” he shrugged “maybe I closed my eyes” I pointed at Rich, he pointed back at me “or maybe you are lying” he is annoying, Reign is touching Rich’ arm “oh my god Reign-Texas! Are you touching other men!?” Reign jumped at Maurice’ voice which made me laugh, she was quick to move “oh wow Reign, you out here touching other men” I laughed at my daughter running to her dad, my poor daughter. Maurice is not shit at all “so Rich, you got your suit ready for the wedding?” looking at him “yes and no, I need to go and pick it up. Also, I wanted to ask, can I bring my mom?” I cooed out “that is cute, I say yes. Ignore what Maurice says, is she coming alone?” I asked “yes, just me and my mom. I just thought I need a date so why not, but she doesn’t mind being alone, but I totally understand if you think no?” shaking my head “no, bring her. That is cute, mother and son. Also, Maurice will say no, ignore him” feeling Maurice sit next to me “I can say no, I am the boss” here he goes “whatever” waving him off.
The way I am gagging over the fact there is eggs on my plate, let me just stop eating this. Pushing my plate, a little “this is nice, I love your mom. Is she living with us?” Rich pointed the fork at me “us?” I retorted “yes us, your home is my home too. Like when you on your honeymoon I am there, also Maurice said I have to do a sex tape for you both?” Maurice laughed like a goof and then Reign copied him “excuse me?” I said to Rich “ask him, he asked me” looking at Maurice “Robyn, he is lying to you. You get so worked up; the honeymoon is just us two. Rich is just being annoying” he is saying that but is laughing and giving stupid looks to Rich which makes me wonder if he did mention “can you be my mom too in New York?” my mom sat at the table with us “of course I can, I don’t mind having a second son now. Maurice is also my son too” my is too sweet “that is so cute to see, honestly. You are very kind to me, you ask where I been too like you care” Rich really like my mom “well I like good people in my life, and you are a good guy, just like Maurice. Even though he can be silly at times. So tomorrow, this time tomorrow I will be rushing around my daughter. What are you thinking of doing Maurice, staying here?” I needed to mention that to Maurice “yes if you don’t mind. I will stay here and arrive at Sacramento tomorrow morning” I am going to miss my baby “of course you can stay here, I will keep my daughter company for the night. I think she will be sleeping well tonight; you have been stressing all night last night so tonight you will get some rest” nodding my head slowly.
Let me catch Maurice before he rushes off “can I speak to you before you leave” I said to him as I walked off towards the living area “I will be back, I am just getting some things you know” turning to him “I know you will be but I will be busy with packing my things, I will miss you” smiling at him “I will miss you too, it’s going to be weird though seeing you tomorrow. You going to be in a wedding dress, I will be sweating in a suit waiting for you. I am nervous, it’s not even about the people around it is just the simple fact I want the day to go perfect for you, the best day ever. You going to be my wife for real now, I can’t fuck up now. My divorce will be wild” hitting his arm lightly “be quiet, I just wanted to say. How you feel about Leon, Jacob and Asia going on your jet. I don’t just want to take them on there and you see it” Maurice pulled a fact at me “it’s your day, you take them on there and have fun. Shame you can’t drink and have fun, but you do what you like, they jet is yours. What is mines is yours and tomorrow that will all be legal” I cooed out “pootie, thank you” hugging him “I try, I ain’t going to make a big deal out of it. It’s about you Robyn” he is so good to me “and I appreciate that Maurice, thank you” kissing his cheek.
Walking behind Jay down the stairs “you sure you ain’t got a dead body in this” Jay complained, a shriek came from the living room “girl!!” seeing Asia “hey! Y’all ain’t late! My god” Asia ran at me “Meet me at the altar in your white dress, we ain't getting no younger, we might as well do it” Asia started singing as she hugged me as I laughed “aye, aye, aye! Let me get in this” Jacob wrapped his arms around us “it’s about damn time, I can’t wait to throw it down! I want the damn songs” it is so good to have these with me, like I know shit went sideways but they all do make me so happy “I want to be throwing my ass around” looking at Leon, he is just smiling at me “who would have fucking thought bitch, you getting married. A whole mother of two and married, chile. I am so happy for you, you deserve it but you are still my girl” opening my arms as I walked towards Leon “I love you so much Leon” Leon held me close “it’s emotional, I feel like a proud father too. I just now there will be tears; I mean I will be dancing and showing out, but I am going to be so emotional. It’s been a long ass fucking road” Leon is the only one to make it through the journey with me, he has rode with me since unlike Tiffany.
I had to laugh, I mean I am not having a hen night but these are really showing out “thank god for the second SUV” Maurice has just pulled up too “out of every damn song you playing this out loud? This is why y’all can’t be taken anywhere, embarrassing as fuck!” I shouted at them, they would be having Ludacris what’s your fantasy playing out loud “I came in time huh” Maurice said, nodding my head “you are right on time, you picked up Lenny then” Maurice looked at the SUV “this is going to be you two tomorrow night!” Asia shouted waving; Maurice actually smiled but he doesn’t want to laugh too much “they are celebrating on my behalf I guess” Maurice nodded his head looking at me “I can see that, I guess you going to have some fun huh. But you go for it, I will see you tomorrow. I am nervous and yes I will shave” he knows “good, I love you and call if you need anything. You got Rich and Matt keeping you company now” Maurice wrapped his arms around me “I know but I prefer your company but have fun, they look fun” wrapping my arms around his neck “that probably hurt you saying that now” I know him “I am serious, have fun. Not too much though, they right. Tomorrow night that will be us, or we could be knocked out asleep. Probably the sleep part with us” he laughed “we have a lifetime with each other, take care” Maurice pressed a kiss to my lips “call me just so I know you got there safely, after that I won’t talk to you. Just your mom or Reign, clearly you got some little party going on” smiling at him “I will, don’t pull that face on me now. I will be seeing you” walking off “I love you Robyn” looking behind me “don’t give me that face pootie” he can’t be pulling that face with me.

The MFackenthal Show with Special Guest @choicesarehard
banner created by the amazing @choicesarehard
Disclaimer: This interview was conducted on July 1, 2019.
Megs: Welcome, welcome everyone to my 10th show! I am so blessed that this show has done so well and the network has given me a full 23 episode slot. I have to tell you - the remaining 13 slots are currently filled! Which just means that my producers are working on a season 2. If you want to be on the show - please let me know. And if you think someone else should be on the show - let me know that too. In fact, today’s show couldn’t have happened without the help of @leelee10898.
Tonight, I have a wonderful special guest with me tonight, everyone please give a round of applause to @choicesarehard!
Ellie: stays seated next to Megs on the couch, gives a little smile and waves to the audience.
Megs: Ellie, I am so excited to have you on the show tonight. When we were chatting backstage, I promised I would start today’s show with a story - something to help you forget that my amazing audience is staring at you. Hmmm .. I’m trying to think of an embarrassing one … let’s see ... I’ve been taught to always sing loud and proud … but that means people often catch me not quite knowing the words to the song I’m singing. That’s not terribly embarrassing though … Oh! I understand that you like to travel … I have to be really careful that I don’t sing when I’m on a plane. It’s harder for me than it sounds. Ooooh oooh oh - idea forming right now! We should have plane karaoke. I really think flights could be more fun if we had a little more to drink and a few more songs to sing together. Plus I never forget the words when I’m singing karaoke - the words are always right there on the screen.
Ellie: laughs. You would certainly have a captive audience.
Megs: Exactly! Okay, your turn. Tell me a travel story.
Ellie: Hmmm ... well, Megs, you see, I’m a Texan, and we tend to be really friendly people. Sometimes, a little too friendly. On a flight home from London recently, a British man in front of us was struggling to fill out his immigration form. He asked the flight attendant “What if I don’t know where I’m staying?” This Texas woman next to me, who does not know this man at all, immediately pipes up, “Sugar, don’t give it another thought, you’ll stay with us. We have a spare room.” And the British man looks absolutely terrified, and squeaks “I meant I don't know the address!” It was the most perfect culture clash I’ve ever seen, and I loved every second of it.
Megs: Oh, that is a great story. Gotta love Texans.
Ellie: Agreed!
Megs: Okay, so Ellie, tell me, when did you join the fandom and what brought you here?
Ellie: I joined Tumblr in January, after reading every single Damien x MC story on the Choices Fan Fiction Archive. No, seriously, like, all of them. I was desperately Googling for more content, and discovered all the amazing creators on here. I made an account that night!
Now, as I can be pretty shy, I didn’t make a single post or even comment on stories my first month on Tumblr. I probably would have stayed a wallflower if @walkerismychoice hadn’t written a story so amazing I had to say something. So I sent her a DM and panicked until she responded. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Maggie took me under her wing, showed me how to tag and post, sent me my first Ask, and even encouraged me to write my first drabble! Friends like her and what really brought me away from the metaphorical wall and onto the fandom dance-floor.
Megs: And we’re so glad you are here! Megs turns to the audience. As there may be a few of you here who don’t know Ellie very well, let me tell you - she is multi-talented. Not only does she write, but she also creates gorgeous edits. Seriously, did you see that banner of us when you first turned on the show? That was all Ellie! She’s amazing.
Ellie: Megs - stop, you’re making me blush!
Megs: Nope, won’t stop. Seriously Ellie, you should charge a commission fee! I would have paid for my icon and banners!!! *wink* Ellie: Ha! You are the sweetest, and I actually get that a lot. But edits are my little way of saying thank you to the fandom for being so kind to the new kid!
Megs: Awh, you’re not so new anymore, friend! So tell us a little about your work. What’s your favorite work that you’ve written?
Ellie: Oh goodness, I can be pretty critical of my own work, but I’m trying to shake that habit. And I am definitely proud of His Hands. Sometimes the things we hate about ourselves are the things that draw others to us, and it was fun to show both those perspectives in one piece.
Megs: Oh, that is so beautiful! Can you tell me more about your edits?
Ellie: The edits started as a way to illustrate one of my Outfit Drabbles — these kind of insane little stories I write about the worst outfits in the game. But I started doing edits seriously about two months ago! Clearly, it has kind of spiraled out of control since then, and I’m slapping wrinkles and tattoos and prison uniforms on everyone. I’ve also started making Choices Aesthetics recently. I love trying to capture the feeling and mood of a book or character in just six panels. My Wishful Thinking Emu board is probably my favorite thing I’ve ever made.
Megs: Everyone should check those out. That Wishful Thinking board is amazing! So, do you prefer writing or the edits?
Ellie: Oh Megs! Don’t make me choose! Oh goodness, let me think. Making an edit is definitely more fun than writing. I’m giggling almost the entire time I’m creating one. And it’s a much, much faster process. But I pour so much of myself into my stories, and I really love getting to share them with other fans. And I think my stories mean more to me on a personal level. So uh...both? Can I say both?
Megs: Of course! I mean, I should probably share something really fast ... if ever I am playing a game - I will look for a way to cheat. So in either/or questions - I highly respect an answer of both.
Ellie: That does explain so much about you, Megs.
Megs: Laughs. Okay, well, getting back to you sharing your work with this fandom. What do you love about this fandom? Is there anything you’re less than happy with?
Ellie: I love how welcoming the fandom is to new writers and artists. My first drabble was literally 77 words… and I had a whopping 13 followers. It should have been totally lost in the noise. But wonderful people like @bobasheebaby @sinclaire-made-me-sin and @ritachacha were so supportive; it made me feel brave enough to write a second story, and a third, and…well, here we are!
And listen, I know no online experience is going to be perfect, but if I don’t like a given topic or series I just filter it from my dashboard, or unfollow the user. Beyond that, I just try to surround myself with people who are kind.
Megs: Do you have any advice for other people in the fandom? Especially other fanfic writers?
Ellie: I’m an incredibly slow writer. Seriously, trees grow to maturity while I finish a single drabble. And it can be intimidating to see a flurry of new content appear as I’m writing. But I’ve had to teach myself not to worry about what stories have already been told or are being told as I write. Our voices will always be unique, so even if the trope or setting is familiar, our work will be something that only we could have created.
Megs: Well … I can’t say much about anyone’s speed of writing. I’m lucky if I get something out every other week. Those are truly beautiful words about uniqueness. Thank you, Ellie! What’s your writing process?
Ellie: Simple - I write three words. Then I panic. Erase two of them. Panic some more. I’m kidding…mostly. In all seriousness, most of my writing wouldn’t exist without @brightpinkpeppercorn. We’re both night owls, and tend to brainstorm ideas long past midnight. Telling a story’s concept to a friend helps me develop the idea without the pressure of formatting or picking the perfect words — especially when that friend has an incredible sense of narrative and how to move a story forward. I really do think writing takes a community sometimes, and I’m so lucky to have one on Tumblr.
Megs: I love hearing about the community really coming together. And speaking of community and coming together … fangirl with me about Choices for a little while. Have you read all the books, what’s your favorite book, favorite One True Pairing (OTP), etc?
Ellie: Well, Megs, don’t tell anyone but … I actually haven’t played three of the biggest series — The Crown and the Flame, Endless Summer, and It Lives Beneath. I really want to, but there’s so much amazing new content each week, how’s a girl supposed to find the time?
Megs: I don’t know! I often whine about not being paid to read all the fanfiction out there. I’m behind right now on both canon and so much fanfiction ... and that is so weird for me. Oh, but I saw that you’ve decided to read Veil of Secrets next. Everyone, check out this post on how you can read or reread it with Ellie, if you want!
Ellie: Awh, thanks Megs. Yeah - everyone should read it with me. As for a favorite choices book … Saying this in an interview makes it real, doesn’t it? gets up and starts to pace in front of Megs Oh gosh, oh gosh … sits back down and takes Megs hands … I’m so sorry Damien, but...it’s Ride or Die. Releases Megs hands and faces the audience. Listen, this wasn’t supposed to happen. Ride or Die was supposed to be a fluffy little story I’d play for diamonds and laugh at. But the narrative has so much more depth and nuance than I’d expected, and your decisions have real consequences. And did I mention the three incredible Love Interests?
Megs: You actually didn’t no.
Ellie: Oh - shush you! Laughs. Well, let me get back to my OTP - It will always be Damien and Kai from Perfect Match. Damien is a man who loves every part of you — your bad jokes, your terrible cooking — and has loved you for years. Besides, his banter is hysterical, and his ability in bed is literally legendary on Tumblr. I mean, come on. It’s a no brainer.
Megs: I do miss Damien! Sigh And, on that note, we are out of time. Thank you, Ellie, for joining me on today’s show. It was a pleasure to have you on the show.
Ellie: Wait, wait - Megs. Before you go, I have one thing I have to give you.
This is an edit of us on today’s show. Thank you for having me and for helping me through my shyness.
Megs: It is gorgeous, Ellie! Thank you soooooo much! I love it!
Ellie: You’re so very welcome.
Megs and Ellie hug then turn to the audience and wave.
Megs: Have a great weekend, everyone!

Bluff
AfuHiru Month - 21.08.19
Day Five_ Bluff Rating_ Mature? But a light one. Again. What’s in here?_ bad words, a lot of money, gambling au, sexual tensione, only hiruma pov, a bit of mamori/megu bc yes Ao3 here, folks (Prompt List) by Nene~
« As you already know, gambling is a form of art. » He was shuffling the deck. « The stakes are 100% irrelevant. » A riffle, then a perfect cascade. « The cards are like a body, you have to know how to touch them. » Then some apparently sloppy overhands, he yawned and he covered his mouth with the right hand. The deck was shuffled anyway with just the left one. He wasn't even left-handed, but his long fingers seemed to be made to touch and seduce the cards of that particular deck. But let's admit it; his hands seemed to be able to seduce so much more. He had a strange grin on his face: it wasn't a real grin, it wasn't a real smile. Maybe it was fake, maybe it wasn't. Maybe he was just looking at the cards with love and respect, maybe he was looking at you with arrogance and defiance. But his hands were in love with the cards for sure. « What's your favourite card, pretty thing? » « Ace of Hearts. » He laughed and dropped the card on the table, a perfect line of fifty-four cards, with all the figures in plain sight but one. With his right hand, he flipped the cards in a single effortless motion, just a finger. The covered card was now in sight and it was the Ace of Spades. « And when art isn't enough. » He took the Ace from the deck, moving it in the had and shaking fluidly a little, his grin was more joyful than before, he really enjoyed that moment. « Here comes some magic. » He placed the card on the table and he nodded at the girl in front of him. She hesitated for a moment, confused, then she flipped it. It was an Ace of Hearts, swapped with the other ace with a quick movement of his fingers in and out of a pocket of his silver suit. A show-off. The show-off, because that night the stakes were too high to fuck around the table like he usually did. The casino asked him to be the dealer because the woman in front of him was a professional gambler, Taki Suzuna, but she had an immaculate reputation and the administration had nothing against her. Too good even to be kicked out. She was tricky. She was girlish and innocent and she was too happy for being a cheater. She was difficult to read and her acts were even more difficult to predict. He was there to make her play safe and sound, 'cause he was the best gambler of the house, the city, probably the entire world, but who knows. That simple color change was one of the finest tricks to prove his skills, since nobody -net even Suzuna, he could tell- had seen it coming. He was too fast, too precise and too good to be seen. Even if a color change is really a simple and predictable magician trick. Suzuna smiled at him with his eyes bright as stars, thrilled because she couldn't see it and now she was even more curious than before about the game. « Can't wait, Hiruma-nii~ » Hiruma smiled back with his unusual grin and opened a new deck to restart the shuffling, more precise than ever. He looked at the other players. Anezaki Mamori, an affectionate of the casino, Hiruma knew her very well. He was a hard gamer, but not a cheater. She liked to win only on strategy and luck, but she was a very good friend of Suzuna. She was the one who made up the game. She was ready to have fun, Hiruma could see it: she was stretching her thin fingers too much. Raimon Natsumi, the beauty of the clubhouse. She was either a pretentious one or a lesbian, he couldn't know, but a pretty decent player indeed. Mikado Anna, at last. Because Anna was the rich one and Mamori well knew that high stakes were important to have a game worthy of its name. And Anna, he had to admit, had a pair of eyes so cold that reading them was a hard task. Hiruma didn't like her so much, but he understood why the casino asked him to deal with the four of them. They probably could have destroyed the clubhouse and each other, if left by themselves or with some incompetent. Like Clifford Dickhead Lewis, for example. He caressed the cards and they were in front of the player in no time. Classic poker, all against all until all against the house when all of their money would be be in his hands. Hiruma wasn't scared at all. - He was doing the math better than ever. The game was on for at least two hours and at that table, everybody was losing and winning like crazy. The wheel of fortune was spinning too fast, so fast that Natsumi was classy enough to leave before a total defeat. Hiruma had let her run away, she was such a conscious girl. His spot was empty, but all of the other ladies said they were still on. Hiruma was pretty happy to open the fourth deck of the evening. The stakes were huge. Mamori was trembling inside, knowing she hadn't all of that money with her. Or in her bank account. Well, she was hoping deep inside, that Hiruma would have been kind like he was with Natsumi, but she wasn't too sure. Hiruma was unpredictable, after all. And he was an official croupier of the house and he had to, at least, seem clean and absolutely impartial. Even if some reasonable doubts were floating around the table. Even if it should have been impossible for him to cheat. It should have. But bluffing was all his life. The secret of bluffing, and even cheat, is not only to do it well enough. It's understanding and knowing when you can bluff. It's distracting your ally and your enemy, it's buffing when nobody can expect it. Of course, he cheated, he was there to do it. And to do it so well nobody could see it. But exactly at the moment all the people in the room were expecting him to cheat or bluff, he didn't at all. And he could know it by doing the math well. Because yes, he read people and he wasn't so good at it, but his calculus didn't need to. And it wasn't about counting the cards. Everybody knows that only the Black Jack is the game in which counting makes the difference. It was about statistics. He was a living algorithm, one of the most difficult and complex to understand, his lie was absolute. Or so he believed. After some hands, something happened. Hiruma was too absorbed in the game to give attention to the surrounding, so he didn't mind about the spectators that were around the table. He had almost forgotten the empty spot and when he saw someone taking the seat while he was shuffling again, he stopped for a second with a dangerous but seraphic and crooked smile. « Welcome. Stakes are pretty high by now. I have to ask you if you have enough to open. » It was strange that someone was willing to enter a game already settled. Hiruma didn't fear anything, but it was interesting. The new player was a young man with blonde hair and red eyes, but he had a strange feeling of deja vu looking at him. Something in his inside trembled with expectation noticing his posture, his hands, his cunning smile. It was a delight after hours of boobs and mascara. He was wearing a blue suit and Hiruma had never seen him there. A newbie? No, too distinct to be one. « I don't have fiches with me. I didn't think I could find something worth my attention. Can you guarantee for me? » The new guy took a checkbook, he signed it and gave it with a smile. Hiruma took it and a shiver went down his spine looking at him again when their eyes and their hands met. Hiruma melted in an almost ferocious sneer. A six-figure payout. It was unexpected. « Of course I can. The change is ten thousands a fiche. I'll give you the first 70 on the spot and the others at need. Can we know your name while someone brings us your goods? » Behind him, a boy took the paper and run fast to get the fiches. « Afuro Terumi. It's a pleasure. » « The pleasure is ours, Terumi-kun! I can bet your presence will spice up the game! » Suzuna laughed and started a little bit of a conversation in which Hiruma wasn't interested at all. He was an interest in Afuro Terumi. He observed him like he was hypnotized by his gestures. He was starting to reading him and it was too easy. Afuro Terumi was the best liar he has ever met. Then, fiches, gambling, bets, hands. Suzuna asked to change the game after a while, Mamori was tired and pointed at her girlfriend to take her place for a bit. Tsuyumine Megu took her spot happily. Hiruma knew that Suzuna was saving Mamori asking for the game Megu preferred; Texas Hold'em. Afuro was losing his money, but he was too calm. The house continued to win and Hiruma was confused: he knew Afuro had some damn good hands. He served him, he was well aware of the card he gave without being explicit. Afuro wanted to lose. Hiruma was dying to know what else he was plotting. His heart was racing faster, even if it didn't affect his duty as a dealer. Hiruma stopped the cheating when he understood the truth: Afuro knew. Of course, he couldn't have any shreds of evidence, but Hiruma stopped to choose the cards for them and Afuro started to win. Not because he could, but because he wanted to. Hiruma was defeated, but he didn't mind at all. It was the best game he has ever had. And when Afuro asked to change the game again in favor of Black Jack Hiruma held his breath. Anna, at that point, was out of the game. Megu and Suzuna saw the opportunity to count and win and gladly accepted the change. Hiruma went nuts. If he could have done it, he would have kissed both of them on the forehead. His smile was still impeccable, but his eyes were ready to fight Afuro. Like croupier, he had the upper hand and he was going to crush- « Don't you think, after all of this time, Hiruma-san should play with us? I think it's our last game, anyway. We can ask somebody else to be our dealer. Right, girls? » Fuck. « That's marvelous! Please, Hiruma-nii, join us! » Megu refused, scared by his reputation, but Mamori was ready to take her place again. Hiruma looked at her and understood that Mamori knew him so well to know he would have died to play against the new gay in the right way. And she was asking, like a player and not like a dealer, to have mercy on her. Hiruma smirked at her. Granted. « I can't refuse, then. » So much money on the table, but he could cover it. Black Jack was his game. Black Jack was the real joy in the gambling world. And when all of the players can count, only the best bluffer can win. Or the best cheater. The house had won so much, anyway, that none of his bosses could have ever complained about that unplanned course of events. He took the seat between Suzuna and Afuro and the scent of Afuro hit him for the best. It was hours that a part of his mind was thinking about fucking him, hard, fantasizing about taking him on the card table pulling his long hair and biting his neck until he could taste his blood. Afuro was reading him, Afuro was making him hot just dong it without in silence. Nobody had ever read him like that. Reiji Maruko was the dealer because Hiruma looked him in the eyes with the clear intent to kill if he didn't offer himself faster than Lewis. Maruko obliged. Mamori and Suzuna were cut out in a matter of seconds. Not because they weren't playing, but because they were irrelevant. Hiruma knew their acts like his own and like a player, he had no mercy. Mamori was the first to retreat, but with still some pride. Suzuna was out after three other hands and, talented or not, Lady Luck wasn't been too kind with her and she had to leave with no hard feelings at all: that was so much fun, after all. Hiruma looked at Afuro directly for the first time since the start of the game. He knew he was going to win the last round. He could feel it and he was waiting for Afuro to finally step back. Afuro looked in his eyes and smiled. « I've lost. » Hiruma grinned felling hot on the inside. He had to suppress his imagination and he just slammed his fist on the table letting out fr a solid second all the emotions he felt during the game. The worst and the best thing was that he suspected... with that man had been a damn waste of energy. He almost missed the gentle, but enthusiastic, the applause of their audience. He won the battle, but he lost the war. Afuro waited until the people starting to go away from the table, Maruko was quick to leave with just a glance at the two. « You were incredible. » « And you lost at least five hundreds of thousands of dollars. You are welcome. » He was bluffing again, with a smile over the grin, over his excitement. Afuro laughed softly and lean near him looking in his eyes. « You know I read you all the time, right? » It should have pissed Hiruma, but actually... « It was nice to be read. » The silence between them was so tense, so full of words. Afuro dared to put a hand on his thigh, just a breath away from him at last. « It would be nice to be fucked. » Just a whisper in his ear and Hiruma could have sense another shiver through his body. « Meet me in one hundred seconds in front of the wardrobe. » Afuro couldn't help but sighed a little, then he returned to normal with a peaceful smile on. What a damn perfect liar he was. « Don't be late, then. » « Don't worry. I can count. » « I know. » Hiruma looked at him went as nothing happened and Hiruma stayed still for some seconds. He knew. Nobody had ever said something so seductive to him. And he couldn't believe his luck.

It was a relatively calm day in terms of traffic, which was a rarity to end all rarities at that time in the evening. This stopped being true very quickly as a blue Nissan Versa rounded a corner and barrelled down the road toward a comic book store. The screech of the vehicle's tires were nearly--although not quite--loud enough to drown out the Queen music it was blasting. As the Versa reached the comic book store, it pulled to a halt and a man in sunglasses stepped out.
As he walked in, the little bell on the door chimed, catching the attention of the shop's proprietor, who was currently lounging in a beanbag chair. He had been there for several hours now, or perhaps several days, depending on how long it took for dust to start gathering on someone.
"We're closed!" Hiro called out without looking up from his first-edition original-run Superman comic. "Go away!"
"It's me, Hiro."
"Oh!" Lowering the comic, Hiro glanced up to see Ando leaning in the doorway, hand in his pocket. "Ando-kun. What brings you here?"
Ando grimaced as he walked over to sit down beside Hiro*. As he turned to face him, Ando took off his sunglasses and tucked them in his jacket pocket, showing off his snake eyes. Hiro looked at him expectantly. As much as he may have secretly wished otherwise, Ando didn't usually drop by without a reason. He wondered if he was going to invite him out to dinner again, or perhaps he just wanted to get drunk and unwind in Hiro's backroom.
[* he pulled up a chair that certainly hadn't been next to the beanbag chair before, and most likely would no longer be there after he stood back up.]
"Well..." Ando hesitated for a moment, then let out a beleaguered sigh. "Armageddon is officially on."
Hiro blinked in surprise.
"It can't be time for that yet!" he objected. "Can't your side wait a little longer?"
Ando shrugged as if to say, "why not check the future for yourself if you don't believe me?"
"Well, can't you tell them to put it off?" Hiro persisted. "I don't want the world to end yet! What about all my comics? And--well, all the people and cities and everything," he added quickly. "Especially America. I must say, I've gotten rather attached to America."
"Oh, believe me, I know," said Ando. "It almost makes me think... hmm." He hummed in contemplation, brow furrowing slightly.
"What?" Hiro prompted.
"Ehh, it's nothing," Ando said, waving his hand dismissively. "Nothing that'd ever work, anyway."
At this, Hiro perked up. In his experience, there were a lot of things Ando thought wouldn't work that worked out just fine. Adjusting his glasses*, he leaned forward attentively to hear his counterpart's idea.
[* naturally, ethereal beings don't require any sort of eyewear, but Hiro opted to wear glasses because they matched his general disposition. At least, that was what he told the higher-ups. Truth be told, he kind of hoped his next corporation would have better eyesight.]
"Well..." Ando said, "I suppose we could always try to save it."
"Save it?" Hiro echoed. "The world?" His mouth quirked into a frown. "I'd love to, but... do you think Upstairs would allow it? They're very strict about following the course of destiny, you know."
"That's true," Ando acknowledged. He leaned back in his chair, a wine bottle manifesting in his hand. "Your side's uptight like that. No sinning, no questioning, no straying from the path of destiny..." He paused to take a sip of wine and shot Hiro a meaningful look. "...No comics, as you say. No waffles, either."
Right about then, a wine bottle appeared in Hiro's hand as well. He took a sip and reflected on what Ando was saying. Truth be told, saving the world did seem like a very exciting prospect. The superheros in his comics did it all the time, and they rarely saw any serious consequences for it. Still, if the world was supposed to end, then stopping it would be going against destiny.
"How do you know the world is ending, anyway?" Hiro asked. "Did you read it in a book of prophecy? Because those things are rarely accurate, you know. Except for the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Isaac Mendez, of course, but there aren't any copies of that left."
"Nope. No books of prophecy," Ando told him. "I know... because I just got back from delivering the antichrist."
Hiro's eyebrows rocketed up. "Really?'
"Yep. We gave her to the family of an American diplomat*. She's a very cute baby, really, apart from the fact that she's the spawn of satan."
[* as far as Ando knew, the baby swap had gone perfectly. A blonde-haired baby girl, whose new parents had named her Jackie, had indeed been delivered to the American diplomat. The other blonde-haired baby girl one room over, whose parents had named her Claire, was without a doubt a perfectly normal child and not the misplaced antichrist. Ando may or may not have been very wrong about this.]
"Well, if the antichrist is on earth, I don't see what we can do," Hiro said, his shoulders sagging. "I don't really want to kill her... I suppose we could just lock her away somewhere."
"Who said anything about killing?" Ando asked incredulously. "I just thought maybe we could provide some outside influence to her. Prevent her from growing up evil, you know?"
"Ohh! That might work," Hiro said. For a moment he perked back up, only to immediately slump back down again when he remembered his side's non-interference policy. "But Upstairs still isn't going to like it. We aren't supposed to get in the way of destiny, you know."
"How do you know what our destiny is if the only accurate prophecy book has been destroyed?" Ando countered. "Hey, maybe it's our destiny to interfere and protect the earth. It's about as likely as anything, right?"
Hiro stopped to think that over and to take a sip of wine. Outside the shop, cars drove by on the street as the sun sank lower in the sky. A bird cawed somewhere off in the distance. It was a nice city, and a nice planet, for that matter. Sure, there were other planets, but Hiro did like earth. He certainly didn't want it to be destroyed. And, well, if what Ando said was right...
"We'll do it, then," he decided, breaking into a grin. "Steer the antichrist onto the right path. Save the world!"
"Or try to, anyway," Ando amended.
Grinning, Hiro snapped his fingers. Somewhere many miles away, a diner in Texas suddenly had a table reserved for two.
"On that note, would you care for breakfast?"
"Angel, it's 5:30 PM."
"Not in America, it isn't," Hiro said. Laying his hand atop Ando's, he added, "Besides, I still owe you from... what was it, the Edo period?"
At that, Ando smiled. He laced his fingers through Hiro's--a typically wily demonic gesture--and lowered his sunglasses back over his eyes. Hiro snapped his fingers again, and the next moment, they were comfortably seated across from each other at the Burnt Toast Diner.
Throughout their meal, they built upon their plan until they were fairly confident in it. They were going to go undercover as a nanny and a gardener*, and they would each try to sway the antichrist toward their respective side. It was hard to tell how well it would work out, but Hiro, for one, was pretty optimistic.
[* Hiro called dibs on the position of gardener, not because he was particularly fond of gardens, but because he had no interest whatsoever in looking after babies, satanic or otherwise.]
In fact, as the night went on, Hiro became quite certain that the plan would work. Having it not work would mean armageddon, after all, and that was the last thing anybody wanted. How hard could it be, really? It all boiled down to simple cause and effect: raise the antichrist, save the world.

Farewell
You knew this one was coming haha
I never posted anything on social media about baseball being over for me because I didn’t want to accept it, acknowledge it, or over-romanticize the ending of a simple game for me.
But I will, however, write this;
These are my sentiments about a game that had an exceptional part in molding me into the man that I am today. I will never communicate anything like this again, unless it’s in person and verbal and only if someone asks.
Here i present to you, Chris Ramirez, the baseball player.
First and foremost, I feel the need to give the greatest gratitude and praises to God for blessing me through my baseball years without a debilitating injury. I never broke, severely strained, pulled, or tore anything in the 16 years of constant travel, overhead motions, conditioning, or weightlifting. I praise my almighty God for that absolute blessing. With saying that, I’m not talking down to anyone who has had one because I’ve realized how anxious it makes athletes as well as how much it affects their confidence, self-esteem, sense of worth, and identity. I truly feel for those who have been affected by the unforeseen traumas of athletics.
Now, for the tear-jerky portion of my outpouring.
My dad has told me that he wanted to sign me up to play little league baseball when I was younger, but my mom was opposed to the idea because she said it was dangerous and I might get hurt. My dad, being the person that he is, went on to sign me up at South Side Little League in south Oxnard, CA. I make sure to specify SOUTH Oxnard because it was the most rag-tag, blue-collared, league in Oxnard (in my opinion of course). Being in this league for the first couple years of baseball made me the humble, quiet player that I was because we always played (and were crushed) by the surrounding, more wealthier and supported, leagues. The best thing about my younger years (pre-high school), was the traveling. Specifically the long drives I had with my dad. We would drive 3-4 hours and basically spend the weekend together. We would wake up early, go to the nearest McDonald’s, and then head to the sports complex. Those are some of the moments, weekends, and trips that I will cherish the most regarding baseball because they constructed the relationship I came to have with my dad. My dad went to as many games as he could, but the majority of games I either had to hitch a ride with a coach or teammate, and he would show up whenever he was able to. Both my mom and dad have supported and been there for me after every great and terrible game to give their unique feedback (you sucked today but we still love you; keep fighting kid. You have unbelievable potential.) I held on to each and every pre- and post-game talk with my dad because above all else, he was PRESENT. He cared about what I had to say and how I felt about my performance, and he absolutely 100% knew that I cared what he saw or had to say (even though after the tough losses I acted like I didn’t want to hear anything from him at times, but like a young boy, I yearned for my father’s edification and approval). They provided the life and the beautiful days I would never EVER take back, and seeing them smile at me and say they’re proud of me when I didn’t get drafted, had my last start, and graduated college meant the entire world to me.
Now, while I’m talking about my family, I wanted to include a few words for the village that raised me.
These pictures are from my very last season of baseball, but it embodies the support I’ve received from my beautiful family. From fundraisers, to them traveling/camping overnight for several days to see me play (succeed, and sometimes really suck, which often made me really sad), I am forever grateful for their presence. My brothers, Angel and Kevin would often help me forget about a tough loss by providing laughs that turned into happy tears, as well as celebrating with me when I had a great game. Their hugs and affirming, congratulatory presence throughout my life have fueled me to be a respectable sibling. I have always wanted to make them proud of me. I value the photos we have together in our baseball uniforms growing up, as well as the ones we took when they came to visit and watch in Vegas and southern Cali. Even more so than the photos, the moments I was blessed to experience when I hugged them and told them that I loved them after a game or after having not seen them in months, are where my love during those years rests. Te quiero muchisimo mis hermanos. Cousins, Tia’s and Tio’s, family friends, who have housed me on my trips, and let me crash on the couch or guest bedroom for a night or two as I was making my way across the country or back home, I love you. You have no idea how grateful I am for your gracious hospitality. It is and always has been truly heartbreaking as a little kid knowing I wasn’t able to make a baseball trip because of insufficient funds. My parents have done everything that they could to make sure I was able to go to at least a couple trips growing up, and I tear up just thinking about how they made it all possible. I am so thankful for the limited opportunities because it made me appreciate each and every one of them a whole lot more. I love you, mi familia. Near and far, familial and friend.
I couldn’t write something like this without mentioning my coaches. The men (and their wives because if you know anything about coaching, it is a HUGE commitment and sometimes takes a toll on their families. So if any of my coaches’ wives read this, THANK YOU for being patient, kind, and supportive to the men that helped mold me physically, emotionally, and spiritually) that took their time showing me how to simply throw a small object wherever I wanted it to go with controlled aggression, allowed me to spend a good-sized portion of my life having the most fun I’ve had playing a little kid’s game.
I wanted to give a special and heartfelt thank you to my friend, brother in Christ, and former pitching coach Matt Merricks because he (by God’s wondrous grace) developed a form of pitching that incorporated your walk with Christ. Once I was saved by God and my world changed forever, I also became a different type of pitcher, and Matt was there to help refine the explosion of my new heart in Christ. Thank you forever Matt, you helped a young boy understand what it takes to heave a baseball and leave it up to God from there as soon as it left my fingertips, as well as doing the same in life.
To my amazing teammates:
To say you guys have changed my life would be the biggest understatement ever. My boys at Channel Islands and the surrounding high schools who I became so close with, you guys gave me afternoons worth enjoying. You made Oxnard and SoCal a place that tore my heart leaving, but oh so wonderful reflecting back on. If I wrote a small little paragraph for each person or year of baseball, this blog would span a lifetime haha, but I’ll keep it short and to the point.
Channel Islands: Jonny, Isaiah, Matt, Beto, Alfred, Ricky, Manny, Micah, Felipe, Greg, Miles, Anthony, Ray Ray, Leo, Wade, Josh, Stefon, and a few others who were my little tribe in high school: thank you for riding through it all with me. All the high school shenanigans, trouble-making, talks about girls, long days of practice and conditioning, were boosted to absolute nostalgia because of all of you. The memories jam packed at that one school and ball field, are some of my most cherished moments of my upbringing. People always say that you should go to college because those are supposedly the best years of your life, but in all honesty, these years are a definite close Second haha. I can still remember and feel the deep belly laughs at jack in the box, trips to fresh and easy, and countless other get-togethers I will not mention because some of my family might read this eventually hahaha
I love you, and I pray you all are doing well.
Colorado Northwestern:
A small junior college in Rangely, CO was the perfect place for my collegiate baseball career to kick into gear. Why? Because of these guys: Joe, Ricky, Alaska, Mikey, Cado, Nies, Chase, Trevar, Colin, Tanner, Riding, Hoff, Texas, the Woods brothers, Naus, Cory, and several others who brought seriously so much happiness to my days there. At a low point in my life, you guys helped keep me afloat by your jokes, brotherhood, invitations, inclusivity, and acceptance of a new direction I was going in life. You supported me, held me accountable at the late hours of the evenings, and poured into me when I really needed a laugh, friend, or a late night/early morning trip to Vernal or the gas station. The trips we took to the lake, the hikes behind the school, phenomenal bonfires at red rocks, runs up and down Kennedy, when we discovered the “rollercoaster”, and post-game dinners in the caf; dang, I freakin miss that small little school in that small little town.
If you didn’t see your name, don’t take it personally I promise. Even if you were only at that specific school for a couple weeks, you still were part of my experience and growth, and for that I am forever grateful for you all.
Mesa:
Finally, my Mesa family.
Not enough words could describe the absolute excitement and gratitude I had entering a program that was notorious for having a winning record, playing home games at the same stadium the junior college World Series is held, and where a minor league Colorado Rockies affiliate resides. I talked about the anticipation and excitement that was literally almost oozing out of me to every person that would listen, and I want to take a moment here and thank each person that listened to my gripes, groans, and endless soliloquys about a little boy’s dream coming true. You may not have known it at the time, but those moments and conversations built me up (or how us young people say it these days, “it HYPED ME UP”) and encouraged me to live up to the “hype” that I was giving myself haha
Colorado Mesa is where I bore my fruit; the fruit I had worked so endlessly for throughout my life. I was crafted and molded into the pitcher I would come to be my sophomore year at CNCC (and that summer), and CMU is where it all flourished. The grit was there; the motivation was there; the humility; the approach; the passion; the youthful zeal (you’re gonna hear me say that NUMEROUS times throughout my written pieces, so you better get familiar with it because it’s one of my favorite phrases). Everything was already in place, by God’s gracious love, and now it was time to showcase it. Soli Deo Gloria style. Coram Deo style.
Pitching at CMU was everything I’d hoped it would be and so much more. Having the opportunity to pitch in a rotation that included some of the best pitchers in the nation was a dream come true for a little kid from South Oxnard. My friends and roommates making their way over to the stadium on some Saturday or Sunday afternoon would come to be one of my favorite memories of putting on that creme colored jersey and doing what I loved. Now instead of making this a 55 page blog post, I’m just gonna talk about the memories that stand out the most:
I’ll start with the entire 2017 season. The 2017 season came with a ton of extraordinary moments, some of which I’ll go into a bit of detail soon, but it also came with devastating news that would lead to the season’s mantra and future banner of pride, brotherhood, and hardwork. A ball player and dear friend to many named Ryan Teixeira past away from his second battle with cancer. His wake and funeral services in California were unbelievably moving, and I couldn’t help but admire (and absolutely sob) on how unashamed of the gospel his family was at his funeral service. They were bold, broken, vulnerable, but stood firm on the promises of God. It was truly spectacular. May Ryan rest in glory.
I had the best year of baseball in 2017. Although my sophomore year at CNCC was super wonderful, I cannot compare the two as to which one was better than the other because each one was vastly different. At Mesa;
- I experienced a beautiful Friday night fireworks celebration after breaking a school win-streak. The stadium was as full as it ever had been while we were playing in it, and there was this aura of happiness and genuine enjoyment, regardless of wherever you were sitting (even in the visitor section). Fireworks and baseball have always been like peanut butter and jelly, ham and burger, salt and pepper, and tyga and Chris brown. 😂
- I flew for the first time (in a private airplane at that) to play in a regional tournament, as well as a D2 World Series. This playoff experience had me almost in tears thanking God for getting our team and I to that point in order for us to experience and excel in an environment like that. I pitched the BEST two games in my life that season (complete game shut-out against the #1 team in the region at their home field to eliminate them and send us to the championship, and a complete game win against the #1 team in the nation to eliminate them and send us to the semi-finals in the World Series).
Baseball is boring to a lot of people; I’ll admit I even think it’s boring sometimes, but I found an aspect that was worth cherishing the boredom forever. Through this game God gave me memories, friends for a lifetime, extreme frustration and anger, absolute joy and passion, and a love and appreciation for a game played by 4 year olds and 70 year olds. How amazing is that?
God, thank you for these years.
I will miss it forever.

Let me look up the definition... My problem with Greg’s understanding of language
This morning I stumbled upon Onision disrespecting LaineyBot video. Here, Greg is trying to explain how language and words work. I have a problem with the way he claims using literal definitions is showing respect for the language you are speaking.
I’m not sure how many of you in this community are from Europe, but here (at least in my country and this part of the continent), we have high schools with special curriculums. We have medical schools, technical schools and so on.
The school I went to is a gymnasium, where students choose from 4 different fields of curriculum focus: general, linguistics and social sciences, informatics, and mathematics. The curriculum which I picked and finished is linguistic and social sciences, which means that my main focus for 4 years has been language. I’ve studied my native language, English, Latin, and German.
A gymnasium education takes four years following a compulsory eight or nine-year elementary education and ending with a final aptitude test called Matura. In these countries, the final test is standardized at the state level and can serve as an entrance qualification for universities. With the final test, we also have to pick one subject, write and defend our own thesis to graduate.
Why am I explaining this? Because I’ve spent four years studying language and social sciences, my finishing paper was about language and literature and I’ve finished my education with high grades.
As a result, it really pisses me off when Cucky McFucky decides to play the all-knowing here because he has no fucking clue how language works.
The first thing we were taught is: LANGUAGE IS A LIVING, CHANGING MATTER. And I don’t think you need to study language excessively to know that. Words evolve and they change their meanings all the time. I’d really love to see Onion boy trying to talk to Shakespeare because for the love of God the only way to respect your language is to blindly follow dictionaries.
I won’t be addressing how clueless he is about biology and social dynamics here because that is a whole other story.
But here we go:
First, what is language?
Language is a system that consists of the development, acquisition, maintenance, and use of complex systems of communication, particularly the human ability to do so; and a language is any specific example of such a system.
(I am aware that Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source, but on this particular subject, it’ll have to do. I could list my sources here and even retype paragraphs and paragraphs of official literature that supports these statements but it would be pointless considering that the literature would be unavailable to most people reading this. And if anyone is interested in more in-depth reading on the subject I’m sure you can find all of it online in the languages of your choosing.)
Languages evolve and diversify over time, and the history of their evolution can be reconstructed by comparing modern languages to determine which traits their ancestral languages must have had in order for the later developmental stages to occur.
But to notice how language changes you don’t have to study ancient languages, just pick an older person to talk to. Talk to your grandmother- chances are she is using words and phrases which you never use, or she uses those words differently than any person your age. If you don’t really feel like talking to old people go ahead and watch an 80′s movie or open an older book.
See the difference? Those changes don’t seem like a big deal, but they pile up and in about hundred years a language gets a complete makeover.
All languages change as speakers adopt or invent new ways of speaking and pass them on to other members of their speech community. Language change happens at all levels from the phonological level to the levels of vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and discourse. Even though language change is often initially evaluated negatively by speakers of the language who often consider changes to be "decay" or a sign of slipping norms of language usage, it is natural and inevitable.
But even if we disregard this phenomenon, language is not a simple set of rules. It consists of many layers. American English is a great example of that. A person born and raised in Texas uses language quite differently than a person born and raised in California. Things get even more diverse when we include class differences, levels of education, and age. These differences within a language are called dialects, sociolects, and idiolects.
In this particular video, Greg focuses on the definition of male and female.
He lists google definition of female:
femaleˈfiːmeɪl/
adjective
1.of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes." a herd of female deer"
noun
1.a female person, animal, or plant.
But let’s look at other definitions (I personally prefer Merriam-Webster dictionary).
Definition of female
1a (1): of, relating to, or being the sex that typically has the capacity to bear young or produce eggs
(2) : having or producing only pistils or pistillate flowers
b: made up of usually adult members of the female sex: consisting of
females
c: characteristic of girls, women, or the female sex: exhibiting
femaleness
d: designed for or typically used by girls or women
e: engaged in or exercised by girls or women
2: having some quality (such as small size or delicacy of sound) associated with the female sex
3: designed with a hollow or groove into which a corresponding male part fits
Oxford dictionary
female
1. Of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes.
1.1 Relating to or characteristic of women or female animals.
1.2 (of a plant or flower) having a pistil but no stamens.
1.3 (of parts of machinery, fittings, etc.) manufactured hollow so that a corresponding male part can be inserted.
Wiktionary
female (not comparable)
Belonging to the sex which typically produces eggs and/or, in mammals, has XX chromosomes.
Belonging to the feminine gender (social category).
(grammar, less common than 'feminine') Feminine; of the feminine grammatical gender.
(figuratively) Having an internal socket, as in a connector or pipe fitting.
This is how these four dictionaries define a female. Google, Merriam-Webster, Oxford, and Wiktionary all give slightly different definitions of a female. How can that be? Ever noticed how when you open an actual dictionary there is more than one definition listed?
The thing is a female (and it’s not the only example of how sometimes a simple little definition is not enough) is quite a broad concept. There are both biological and social connotations tied to it. And guess which is easier to define?
How does Greg identify males and females? Does he ask each and every person he meets about their ability to produce offsprings? What about people who are infertile? What about people who have certain chromosome variations? Women who can grow beards and men who have more pronounced breasts? How do they fit into this neat little definition?
Even if we stick to the binary division of only two sexes and genders, it is impossible to go strictly by biological definition in everyday life. I’m not saying we should completely ignore biological definition, but there is a reason biological definition is not the only one.
And what really annoys me is how he screams SCIENCE, even tho three seconds earlier he didn’t even know what’s spermatozoa.
Just because you google the fucking definition doesn’t mean you understand science, Greg. Science is one of those pesky little things where you really need to go in-depth to understand shit, Greg. People study biology for years, get specializations in specific fields, Greg. Believe it or not, actual people of science dedicate their entire lives to specific fields just to gain an actual, deeper understanding of how shit works. Science is not two seconds of googling it takes you to find whatever definition you like the best, Greg. If any of my professors heard this man talk on any subject whatsoever they’d probably return him to preschool.I swear to god, I’ve met thirteen-year-olds who are better educated and have more understanding of how stuff works than him.
And I’m a bit lost here, now. He takes the biological definition to define males and females. Then he jumps to defining sexuality. He gives definitions which are directly tied to sex. If infertile people aren’t male nor female, does that mean they have no sexuality?
This is where I’m finishing this video, I can’t bear to listen to this obnoxious man any longer.
So, to all you trans ladies and gentlemen out there, don’t listen to this giant manchild. Your gender and sexuality are valid, you are respected, you don’t deserve to listen to this sort of bullshit.
Sorry for this unnecessary rant, but it annoys me when a person with no actual understanding of a matter tries to lecture others about it.
#anti onision#onision#laineybot#its christmas here and im stuck with all of my family so this is how im venting

All is Fair: Chapter 7
Word Count: 3.1k
ao3 ; wattpad
masterlist ; next chapter
CHAPTER SEVEN:
Sleeping in shifts was exhausting. Definitely worth it, but exhausting.
After waking up to the realization that he’d had a wet dream the night before, Dan had done whatever he could to make sure he didn’t have to spend an entire night sleeping in a bed with Phil again. Just thinking about his dream made his cheeks heat, the skin on skin, the lips on his neck, his hand buried into suspiciously short hair…
It was undeniable, the hard, smooth chest he’d felt pressed against his, the Adam’s apple he’d kissed, the erection he’d rutted against. It’d been a guy in his dream and Dan was having trouble coming up for any kind of excuse for that. He’d liked it in the moment (enough to make a mess of his pants, anyway) and didn’t know how to go about denying it any longer.
He was gay.
And nobody could ever know.
It would be Dan’s terrible secret to bare. He’d keep it hidden, keep it tucked away where no one could ever realize its existence. Gods, how could this have happened to him? Every time his uncle had mouthed off against “the gays”, every time he’d scowled and gotten a twist in his mouth towards anything even hinting at homosexuality, Dan had thought he’d felt indignant solely on their behalf.
He’d always been an understanding and accepting person, of course he wanted everyone to be safe and respected and loved. But now that it was him? Now that he was the problem? It just felt like his whole life was going to shit.
And now that he’d finally realized he was gay, he felt stupid for having ignored it for so long. Deep down, all along, he’d probably always known it. He must’ve, having blatantly ignored every girl everyone thought was cute or tried to set him up with, having shrunken away from the idea of even looking at a guy in any way other than a friendly one.
He knew it was stupid, too. He didn’t hate Phil for being obviously not straight, didn’t think he was disgusting or gross or horrible or any of that nonsense. So why did he feel all of that about himself? Why did it feel like something that was never going to be okay for him? Was it simply because he was the son of Aphrodite? Because of the fact that maybe she would disapprove and want him to love in a more… traditional way?
Well, he could do that. Or he could pretend to, at least. Plus if he pretended hard enough, it just might work out. He certainly couldn’t ever let his uncle know—the mere thought of him finding out left Dan with goosebumps all along his skin.
It was in this same cycle of endless thought, of fear and hatred and unhappiness, that he went through during his shift of not sleeping. He’d been the last shift, Phil having taken Emma’s bed when he woke her up for hers, and now it was the early hours of the morning, soft light just barely beginning to filter in through the edges of the curtain.
It was almost a relief when Phil woke up not too long after that, groaning in his sleep and rubbing tired eyes. Dan tried not to watch him, but it was impossible. His shirt had ridden up in his sleep, leaving much of his stomach bare. And his boxers were riding low upon his hips, letting Dan’s eyes scour all over his exposed hipbones, up to his navel, back down and up and up—to his eyes, which were open, looking at Dan.
Heat exploded throughout Dan’s entire face but he tried to ignore it, tried to pretend like he hadn’t been devouring Phil with his eyes, hadn’t been wanting to touch him all over, to feel his warm, smooth skin under his fingers.
“Morning,” Phil croaked, having maneuvered himself onto a propped elbow. Dan stayed silent, just picked up his hand and waved. He’d been pretty rude to Phil ever since waking up from that embarrassment, and he felt a little bad about it now, knowing Phil had been attacked and overwhelmed by some kind of monster while Dan was busy sulking and deciding he hated him.
Dan felt his eyes follow Phil on their own accord as he stood up and stumbled into the bathroom. When he emerged minutes later, he raised his eyebrows, gesturing over his shoulder. “Breakfast?”
Dan couldn’t say no to food. His stomach had been complaining for the past hour or so, thinking it was actually breakfast time after he’d been awake for so long, and so he clambered to his feet and stretched, groaning as he finally stood after having been curled up in that chair all morning.
Phil pulled on a pair of sweatpants while Dan grabbed the keycard and then they were walking through the hotel halls together. They didn’t say anything but somehow the silence felt comfortable, possibly just because of the lingering sleepiness surrounding them both.
Dan, having had the free continental breakfast the day before with Emma, led the way, turning away from the main lobby and down a short hallway, at the end of which was a small cafeteria of sorts. There, he and Phil split up from each other, Dan towards the small packages of cereal and containers of milk and Phil towards the waffle machine. They reconvened at a small, rickety table, where Phil poured entirely too much syrup onto his waffle and hummed with the first bite.
“Oh man,” he said. “I don’t eat these enough.”
“You could eat them at camp whenever you wanted,” Dan pointed out. He actually pointed his spoon at Phil as he said this, a drop of milk splattering onto the table in between them. They both ignored it.
One of the best things about Camp Half-Blood where the plates, the endless assortment of foods that couldn't appear. It didn’t make sense for Phil not to enjoy waffles whenever he wanted.
“It’s not the same,” Phil finally said, shrugging simply. “My mom only ever let me have them on special occasions.” This seemed a bit strict to Dan, but maybe it made sense. His mother had ended up having Phil with Ares, after all.
“Is now a special occasion?” Dan ended up asking, frowning as he watched Phil pour even more syrup onto his waffle.
“Sure it is,” Phil said with a shrug, looking up at Dan with a smirk. “It’s our first date!”
Dan felt his mouth drop open, felt his cheeks go red, as anger and embarrassment coursed through him like—
Phil kicked him in the shin. “I’m kidding. I just wanted a waffle, okay?”
“Whatever,” Dan muttered, looking back down at his cereal and mushing all the pieces under the milk. They ate the rest of their meal in relative silence, mainly just commenting on the people they saw, pointing out weird things about them and making up stories about why they were here in West, Texas.
Dan ended up grabbing a second serving of cereal to bring to Emma before he and Phil started heading back to their room. A man, tall and (Dan admitted grudgingly) handsome, was standing a little ways away from the elevator. He was talking on his phone, and as he turned to walk towards the main lobby, a scrap of paper fell out of his hand and fluttered to the floor.
“Hey!” Phil called out immediately, the good samaritan that he was. He was already running towards the paper, picking it up as he said, “You dropped thi—!” His voice trailed off as he read the paper, the man already outside the hotel’s front doors. Dan came closer and peered over Phil’s shoulder at the paper.
Meet me in the abandoned warehouse, demigods.
“That’s a trap,” Dan decided.
“Probably.”
Dan scoffed. “Most definitely. Let’s just ignore it.”
Phil was biting his lip, looking as if he was going to suggest not ignoring the ominous paper a mysterious stranger had dropped, somehow knowing the two of them were demigods. Dan groaned, wondering why nothing could ever just be simple.
—
It was a trial, waking Emma up before the sun was even completely above the horizon, something she vehemently believed in never doing. It was even more of a trial trying to convince her to go to an abandoned warehouse because a stranger told them to.
“That’s like, definitely something that’s going to get us killed,” Emma had decided right off the bat.
“I completely agree,” Dan had said. “But Phil made a few good points…”
And he had. They didn’t have any other leads anyway, and they’d only decided to stay an extra night in the first place because they’d been planning to actually look around for some clues (and because their room was conveniently paid for).
And so, a disgruntled Emma munching on dry cereal and a much too cheerful Phil leading the way, they walked down the crumbling streets of West, looking for the abandoned warehouse.
“There can’t be more than one abandoned warehouse in this town,” Phil reasoned, standing on his tiptoes where he stood on the sidewalk as if he could peer over the surrounding buildings right into the warehouse they were searching for.
“Did you say abandoned warehouse?” an old man croaked from directly behind them, having just exited a convenience store they were passing. “Why, there’s only one of them in this town!”
“Convenient!” Emma cheered. “All right, where?”
The old man pointed a shaking finger down the street. “Turn left at the next street and you’ll see it right up ahead.”
With newly equipped directions, they easily found the warehouse. Afraid they would get yelled at for trespassing, they attempted to sneak through the deserted land, ducking behind the fence and strange metal structures scattered throughout the yard. They didn’t get caught, either because no one was around to see them doing it or no one cared enough to say anything.
The door screeched and rust rained from the hinges as they pulled it open, stepping into the dark and dank smelling building.
“Creepy,” Phil commented.
“What did you expect?” Emma scoffed. “It’s an abandoned warehouse and we were invited here by a man who’s probably actually a monster.”
“Well you don’t need to say it like that,” Phil muttered. Dan ignored their bickering and stepped further inside, flicking on a flashlight that’d been stored in his pack. Its beam swept over cobwebs in the corners and long since out-of-order machines surrounding them, all covered with a thick layer of dust. Visible through the dust on the floor were footprints, leading off deeper into the warehouse.
“Ten drachmas says we find a skeleton,” Emma bet in a whisper, her own flashlight joining Dan’s, lighting the path in front of them.
“Nah,” Phil whispered back. “Not enough people come to West to die here.”
“Not enough people come to West to find the people who die here,” Emma countered, and Dan shushed them.
“Ten drachmas says you two get us killed and I annoy you for the rest of eternity in the fields of Asphodel,” Dan hissed.
Emma scoffed. “Asphodel?” she demanded. “We’re totally getting into Elysium.”
There were three different levels to the underworld. After death, every mortal found themselves there, waiting in line to get judged to decide where they would spend the rest of their ghostly existence. Evil people went to the fields of punishment, where their souls suffered for all eternity doing horrible tasks. Ordinary people, living lives full of neither super good nor super bad deeds, ended up in the fields of Asphodel. They pretty much forgot about their existence entirely—just drifting around, thinking and doing nothing, resolved into mere facets of their past selves. But heroes, people who’d done extraordinary good, got to go to Elysium, which was all sunshine and gardens and living but like, while dead.
“Sure,” Dan said sarcastically, before peering around a corner. The next hallway was littered with more broken objects and footsteps leading away from them.
He opened his mouth to say something about how he’d never done anything extraordinary in his life and would surely end up in Asphodel, when a giant cage fell from the ceiling and trapped them all.
“I knew it!” Emma groaned.
Dan huffed through his nose as Phil said, “You didn’t know,” and resigned himself to being captured.
—
“You guys fell right for that,” the man before them commented, breathless. He’d just dragged the entire cage, the three of them still inside, into the middle of the room.
“I said we shouldn’t have come,” Emma said loudly, and Phil scoffed.
“What do you want from us?” Dan asked. The man turned to look at him, his eyes trailing Dan from head to toe. He sighed.
“Well, I’m supposed to stop you guys from getting any closer to the bow,” the man said. He waved his hand flippantly. “Kill you, or something.”
“Supposed to?” Dan questioned, clinging to what little bit of hope they seemed to have. The man shrugged again.
“It’s a lot of work, you know?” he said, and Dan swore he could feel his eyes on him again, tracing him up and down. “And I’m not really getting anything out of it.”
Emma glanced at Dan, her eyes wide. The look was obvious. It was the kind of look that said: this monster isn’t all that enthusiastic about killing us and we can probably get out of it if we talk smoothly enough.
Dan turned to share this very look with Phil, but Phil’s face was saying something entirely different. He was flicking his eyes from the monster to Dan and back again, and then raising his eyebrows twice in quick succession.
“What?” Dan whispered.
Emma was already trying to sweet talk their way out of the cage. “That’s ridiculous!” she exclaimed. “You’re not even going to get anything for doing all the hard work?”
Dan was looking around the room, trying to assess their chances of escape. Even if they got out of the cage they’d still have to escape from the bars that’d fallen to block all the exits.
“I know!” the monster (who really didn’t even look like a monster, just a normal, tall guy) answered. “Like, that’s a bit selfish, right? I only agreed because if you say no to a god they’d smite you.”
“I totally get it,” Emma said, nodding. “We go on quests for gods all the time—no clue what would happen if we said no. Nobody’s dumb enough to try.”
“Exactly!” the man roared. “Man, you guys aren’t so bad. I’m Jeremy, by the way.”
“Phil,” answered Phil, immediately. “And this here is Dan. Son of Aphrodite.” He pushed Dan forward as he said this, almost like he was presenting Dan to Jeremy.
Jeremy smiled at Dan and, feeling confused, Dan tentatively smiled back.
“Who is this god that’s after us, anyway?” Emma scoffed. “You’d think that, being as powerful as they are, they’d have the gall to come after us themselves.”
“Right?!” Jeremy said, shaking his head with a laugh. “I don’t know, though. I mean, if I told you…”
“The god would be pissed if they found out?” Emma said with a sigh.
“Yeah.” Jeremy shook his head. “They’d totally skin me alive or something. But… I can’t kill you guys,” he said, smiling ruefully. “You’re all so nice!” As he said this, his eyes flitted to Dan again. Dan shifted in place, uncomfortably aware of his own skin.
“Maybe you could let us out?” Phil suggested, so boldly that Dan wanted to smack him. They needed to be subtle! “We could sit down and try to think of some solution that benefits us all,” he said with a casual shrug, as if the outcome of this request didn’t really matter to him.
“You know what,” Jeremy said, “that’s a pretty good idea.” With that, he stepped forward and ripped a bar off the cage with his bare hand, creating a hole large enough for them to squeeze through. And so they did—Dan slipped out first, and he stood awkwardly a few feet in front of Jeremy as his friends joined him.
“Would you look at the time!” Jeremy suddenly exclaimed, examining a fancy watch on his wrist. “Alright, you guys wait here; I’ll go get us all some breakfast. You guys like Subway? That’s like, all they have in this town.” They weren’t hungry, having all just eaten themselves, and none of them would want Subway for breakfast anyway, but they said nothing as Jeremy strode across the room to leave. He momentarily bent a few bars to slip through them and waved goodbye as he walked through the warehouse towards the main entrance.
The moment his footsteps had receded entirely, Phil turned to Dan. “You need to flirt with him,” he said immediately. Dan spluttered something incoherent, his voice suddenly going a much higher pitch.
“Did that cage hit your head when it fell?” he demanded. “Why in the world would I flirt with him!?”
“Phil’s right,” Emma said seriously. “It could be our only way to persuade him into telling us which god is commanding him.”
“You’re both insane,” Dan decided. “I’m not—I’m not flirting with him. He’s a guy! Plus Emma should do it, if anyone. I don’t even know how to flirt!” The excuses tumbled out of him so quickly he was sure one of them would latch on and change the mind of his friends.
Phil just shook his head. “That man is gay,” Phil said, pointing his finger towards the corridor Jeremy had disappeared through. “And he was eyeing you up that whole time—that’s probably why he even let us out of the cage. He wants to get in your pants.”
“I’m not letting him in my pants!” Dan squeaked, thinking of the way Jeremy had snapped an entire bar off their cage. He took a step back from Phil, almost afraid he might actually try to wrestle his pants off.
“Of course not,” Emma readily agreed. “You just need to make him think you will.”
“Have you forgotten the fact that I can’t flirt?”
Phil waved him off. “You’re a son of Aphrodite,” he said. “You have charm, even if you don’t realize it. It comes naturally to you.”
Dan bit his lip. He really, really didn’t want to do this. He didn’t want to flirt with a guy, didn’t want to encourage this crush that Jeremy apparently had on him. But… they did need to find out which god had stolen his mom’s bow in the first place. This could very well be their only chance to do so.
“Fine,” Dan finally snapped, crossing his arms over his chest to hide how uncomfortable he really felt. “I’ll do it. But you two’ll owe me for eternity.”
“Deal!” Emma said, now smiling hugely. “This’ll be great.”

The buzz on bees: Why buckets of honey aren’t the only reason you should consider this rewarding hobby | News
On a nice spring day like this, thousands of honeybees are zipping in and out of Mike Rekart’s hives. The Denton County Beekeepers Association member sits about 6 feet away with a beer, watching the ladies — all worker bees are female — return from their journeys. The “pollen baskets” on their back legs are packed with yellow dust from the 50 to 100 flowers each has visited.
A steady buzzing emanates from the wooden box. That sound, as distinctive to bees as honey itself, comes from the insects’ wings beating up to 200 times a second. It does not rattle Mike, who is relaxing in his Denton garden with no special gear on.
“One of the big things the beekeepers in this area are after is gentle bees,” he says. “I can get close to mine. They don’t sting my dog. The strain I have is not aggressive. We’re able to live in harmony with them very easily.”
Mike is watching his hive not just for his own enjoyment, but to see if he notices anything amiss or unusual. Catching a problem early and responding to it is crucial to successful beekeeping — something he found out the hard way during the first two years of his hobby.
“I didn’t do well,” he says. “I made it through the summer, and then it all died. I tried to redo some things myself, and I was just failing. Bees are very forgiving if you get on something that happens to them fast, but I was uneducated about the signs of things happening. I needed some guidance.”
Fortunately, that guidance is available through the Denton County Beekeepers Association for any Denton County resident who is considering the rewarding hobby of beekeeping.
“I joined the club, and man, it was the bomb,” says Mike, who now has one “giant” hive in his backyard, eight more on shared land, more honey than he can eat, and a garden of well-pollinated lemons and avocados. “I feel like I’ve got 30 years’ worth of knowledge now, not three, because the club is really more than the sum of its parts. There’s a whole host of people you can go to to get information that’ll help you, and beekeepers are very excited to swap knowledge and give advice freely.”
The growing club of around 120 members is a little over 3 years old. DCBA President Candi Pardue says the goal is to support Denton County beekeepers while educating residents about our county’s pollinators.
Awareness is important because pollinators such as honeybees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food humans eat, according to Bee City USA, which designated Denton as the state’s second Bee City USA (after Beeville, obviously) in 2016. The certification indicates Denton’s commitment to helping these important pollinators survive.
Beekeeping 101
One way to help is to consider becoming an urban (or suburban) beekeeper yourself. Start by checking your local ordinances, which vary from city to city. Denton’s, for example, stipulates that you may have up to four hives on an acre of land, while Flower Mound says you can have no more than three on less than an acre. If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association, check there as well, and of course, take neighbors into consideration. Bees sting as a last resort (each bee can sting only once because the act of stinging kills them), but a neighbor with a life-threatening allergy to bee venom won’t care much about that fun fact.
You need not have a lavish garden or orchard. Your bees will forage within a 2- to 3-mile radius of their hive and can zip around at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. “They can go up to 5 miles,” says Candi. “I try to tell people not to have tunnel vision.”
Take an Intro to Beekeeping workshop hosted by the DCBA, join a club to network with other beekeepers and consider private lessons. “A lot of people prefer to take lessons,” says Candi, who has been teaching beginner beekeeping for five years. “It’s not a requirement, but I tell people that it’s always wise to invest in your education first because you don’t want to spend the money and time and then fail miserably.”
So how much money and time will you be investing in your new endeavor? Candi says the financial component can vary a lot depending on your choices. Bees cost between $175 and $300, but if you wait too late in the year, you could pay as much as $500.
“Most people wait until about May,” says Candi. “The sun is shining, we have beautiful weather and the flowers are blooming, then they want to become a beekeeper. At that point, it’s almost too late. The earlier in the year you can start planning, the better.”
You’ll also need protective equipment. For that, you can spend as little as $30 for a simple hat, veil and gloves or get a top-of-the-line suit for $300. The same flexibility goes for your wooden hives.
“Do you want to go on the cheap? Or is this something that is going to sit right near your home that you want to look really nice?” asks Candi. “You could spend $350 or you could cut some corners and probably get that down to around $200.”
As for the investment in time, “I tell my first-year students to get in the hive two or three times a week [from May to August or September],” says Candi. “There are beekeepers that have more of a hands-off approach. They believe you just let the bees be bees and maybe check them once a month. That first year, it’s a good idea to be very hands-on. That’s your learning, your education. The more you learn and the better you’re able to anticipate what your bees need, the less time it takes. Around your second or third year, you kind of hit your stride and have a good visual on what they’re doing and what they need from you.”
God save the queen (and her girls)
When you do inspect your hives, Candi says you’re looking to make sure that the queen is healthy and laying enough eggs (as many as 2,500 a day during certain times of year); that the bees have enough but not too much room; and that they are bringing in enough pollen and nectar.
“We do have times of the year in North Texas where there’s a dearth,” she says. “That means there’s no food available for your hive. During that time, we can supplement feed with sugar, syrup, pollen substitute and things like that. You just want to make sure they’re fed. Honeybees are the only livestock that you really want to be fat because a fat bee is a happy bee, and we want happy bees.”
Those are some things you’ll be checking for during inspections, but you will likely run into a lot of other fascinating behaviors as well. Let’s start by meeting the three types of bees you’ll find inside your hive: the queen bee, worker bees and drones.
There is only queen, and she’s key to the colony’s success. They’ll know quickly if she’s gone. An experienced eye can find her; she is longer and leaner than the other bees and has a more pointed abdomen. She takes one mating flight when she’s young, mating in midair with up to 15 males, then in many cases, never leaves the hive again. She can live up to five years but may be replaced by her colony sooner if she’s inefficient at laying eggs.
Drones (boy bees) are created when the queen chooses to lay an unfertilized egg. They make up a very small percentage of the colony because their entire job is to hang out in the sky in drone congregation areas — the bee equivalent of a singles bar — waiting to mate. Because they don’t contribute to the hive (they can’t even fend off invaders because they lack a stinger), they are usually kicked out as winter approaches and food becomes scarce.
The vast majority of a colony is made up of worker bees — daughters of the queen — who hold several jobs during their short lives. They are janitors (cleaning out cells for eggs), nurses (feeding baby bees), construction workers (building honeycomb cells from wax and repairing damaged cells) and guards (keeping the hive safe). They may also regulate the temperature of the hive, bring in water, pack up pollen, seal off finished honey, remove the dead or even tend to the queen. Busy bees indeed!
The last stage of their lives is, of course, foraging. These girls need to gather nectar from about 2 million flowers and fly about 90,000 miles to make a single pound of honey, so there’s no time for wasted flights. That’s why they have an ingenious method of communicating when they’ve found a sweet stash of flowers. It’s called the waggle dance. (Yes, really.) When a forager finds something exciting, she returns with the news and a sample. She shimmies in a figure-eight then does an elaborate dance to communicate where the others can find the treasure.
“Beekeeping is the most fascinating thing,” says Candi. “And you will never in your life taste honey as good as your first honey harvest. True local honey is amazing and hands-down, 100% better than what you’ll buy in a store.”
Threat watch
In addition to the intriguing behaviors of these social little creatures and the pounds of golden honey you’ll get to share with friends, there may be another reason to become a backyard beekeeper: “It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that our bees are actually saved by our small-scale beekeepers because the commercial guys are losing so many,” says Candi. “It’s not a fault of theirs. I love and respect them. They have a really hard job and are doing the best they can, but we need that older style of farming too.”
The oft-talked-about colony collapse disorder is, Candi says, not one single condition but rather the result of a number of factors in our agricultural system. Large commercial pollinators truck hundreds or even thousands of hives around the country to pollinate almonds, berries, canola and other crops. Those bees eat only one thing and are stressed by travel.
“It would be like you and me working 80 hours a week and only eating cheeseburgers,” she says. “At some point, we’re going to be unhealthy, and that’s kind of what those bees face. Bees are not meant to be put on an 18-wheeler and locked in for three days while they travel across the country.”
In addition to stress and poor nutrition, the EPA notes that other risk factors for honeybees include the invasive varroa mite, new and emerging diseases, pesticide poisoning and habitat changes.
We can help with many of these factors as community beekeepers. “Our hives aren’t moving around. They have a very diverse diet with trees and wildflowers. We’re able to supplement and feed them when we need to. They have kind of a cushy job.” And creating more healthy bees with cushy jobs is never a bad thing.
Good stewards
Whether you have an interest in beekeeping or just want to help keep these important pollinators safe, you can help by planting bee-friendly plants, supporting legislation that helps bees and using caution when using chemicals in your yard.
“Bees are amazing, and they’re fun,” says Candi. “The more beekeepers and non-beekeeping residents in the county can work together and benefit each other when it comes to herbicide and pesticide use and hive management, the better. We’re stewards for this tiny bee, so let’s put our best foot forward and do the best we can for everybody, so everyone is happy, and bees aren’t ever a nuisance in Denton County.”

MASTERLIST
“Jared! Misha! What are you doing?!” a yell came like a booming bark, startling the three of you like scared rabbits. Misha froze, Jared’s smile faltered and you turned to face the person responsible for such reaction.
Much to your surprise, Clif Kosterman stood before you three, strong and tall as ever. He was Jensen’s bodyguard and you had only every spoken to him at parties where he was forced to be pleasant. You knew he did not earn a reputation as a cold man without a reason.
His gaze fell like an act of violence; you swore the look you got from the man could be the definition for glaring. Misha stuttered out, “No-nothing! Jared and I were just showing Ms. L/N how to – “
“It’s no longer L/N, Misha. With all due respect, you shouldn't be dragging her out here without informing me,” his tone ice cold.
Wait. Why are all of them here suddenly? You were trying to put the pieces together in your head. Last you remembered you did not need anyone’s permission to roam about your own property.
You cut your self-debate short to focus on what Clif was saying, feeling guilty for the other two. Awkwardly, you stepped forward in front of Misha and Jared with an apologetic expression.
“I-it’s not their fault. I agreed to this, really!” you defended the two. You were timid in his imposing presence. His icy cold gaze fell back on you, unlike his friends, he didn’t let up with the harshness.
“Sorry, missy. I’m afraid you cannot be running off shooting guns without proper supervision”
“Wha – “
“Come on now, Cliffy. You didn't think we were capable enough to take care of one girl?”
“Don’t call me that!” You swore you saw a vein ready to pop on his forehead. He ran a hand down his face and sighed exasperatedly. “Even so, missy here cannot be put in any situation that may harm her. She’s a girl for goodness sake. Who in their right mind would – you know what I’m not gonna argue on this”
“Anyway, I’ve been looking for her for a good hour now. Next thing I know I find her shooting off cans with two idiots.”
Jared tried to defend himself but only done himself cut off by Clif’s glare, daring him to speak up. Here you are, feeling awkward again. You messed up, somehow. You had gotten Misha and Jared in trouble, surely Jensen would find out about. Which adds up another reason for him to hate you for.
“Mr. Ackles’ looking for you, missy” Clif stated.
“J-jensen?” Your eyes snapped up in shock. No way?
“No, Alan Ackles I mean”
Why is everyone here?!
You had barely enough time to register what happened when Clif escorted you back to the farmhouse.
How lovely, you thought.
Jensen, your adulterous husband you did not wish or want to see, was there in the living room with his father.
“You either consummate the marriage or I’ll look for another heir!”
There goes your chance of having a simple conversation with your father-in-law.
Those words rung in your eyes and you swore to Chuck you could feel your pulse beating in your eardrums. Jensen’s father had never shown you any ounce of malevolence and you thought he could never harbor any ill will. The same man you had imagined sat in your living room’s couch, his face red and contorted, his mouth curved in a snarl, and Jensen was clenching his fist. The living room felt cold, the feeling not unknown to you.
You made a mistake of letting out squeaking in fear at such an intense scene, surprised and taken aback by the look in the Ackles’ heir, a murderous glare, at his own flesh and blood.
Two sets of eyes landed on your figure in the back doorway by the kitchen. Alan softened his gaze just a tiny hint, sympathetic at your justifiable fear and Jensen rolled his eyes in annoyance. If his luck could get any worse, Danneel would strode in through the front door and then, why the hell not everyone from the firms. Just fan-fucking-tastic!
“I uh, I’ll prepare dinner” you managed to stutter out, instantly busying yourself in the kitchen to avoid any confrontation.
You pursed your lips, you had been just as unenthusiastic as Jensen had been about your arranged marriage and he had yet to hear your thought on the matter. Sure, you’d clam up if you had the chance to talk to him, but you still you thought you had been obvious with your clearly disturbed body language.
It wasn’t like you were hopping to cling to his arm and steal his money, not that you needed to anyway. You were doing fine alone, with man or not. All you wanted was to be happy with your future husband and wishing he at the least would make an attempt to make you feel less like a greedy devil and more like an equally uncomfortable party. You would have given anything to have him marry Danneel, everything it took to save your poor heart from breaking at his disgust for you.
He hated you. His orders to his friends had been enough proof. You were a problem to him, an obstacle in his pursuit of happiness.
It made your heart ache.
You, the one thing that stood between him and her; the unwanted wife; a pest, a replacement.
And all your life you would be unhappily married to him, Divorce was not an option in your position.
All you ever wanted was to love and be loved in return.
“I won’t touch her,” he spat, words like venom. “She wouldn’t want me either, I’m positive.” He glanced over to his father, likely sick of seeing you in his line of sight. You tried your best to drown out their conversation, to occupy your mind with your task in hand.
Okay, now to cut the mushrooms, then wait for the pasta to be cooked, then maybe i should perhaps make some tea? Or would they prefer coffee. Oh who am I kidding.
You felt your knees tremble to hold yourself upright. Alan shot his son a look, one with too many words unspoken. He sighed. “You can’t run from your problems, son”, his voice still willed with conviction, but a little softer in your presence.
Jensen scowled. “She’s not a problem, she’s a pest” irate muttering came from his lips.
“Don’t speak ill of her that way!” Alan almost yelled. You froze in your action, eyes blinking in shock at the words rolling out of your husband’s lips. You could feel tears slowly building up in your eyes
“You’d throw everything for one girl?!”
“At one point of your life, you would be happy that I would. I’m not the villain; you sit in your meetings with the L/N’s and all those idiots knowing nothing. This isn’t my fault. I get to be mad!”
“You’re being foolish, Jensen!”
Jensen grit his teeth, he was getting nowhere with his father. He abruptly stood up, his knees bumping into the coffee table making it skid back a little. He threw a glare at his father’s direction once more and stormed off upstairs. You were now left with a red faced Alan Ackles who was not yet done lashing out at his son.
You wanted to leave, run out that back door and into the quiets of the open field, but he was your father-in-law, it would be rude to just walk out like that.
Alan leaned forward, his elbows on his knees and rubbed the tension between his eyes and his voice became tired. He had argued for so long and this argument was an explosion bound to happen and left overdue, you knew that. You turned off the fire on the stove and poured a cup of tea and carefully trotted your way to the living room.
“Have some tea, sir.” You placed the cup down on the coffee table, the whole time your eyes on the floor. Alan noted the way your hands shook in the aftermath of the confrontation.
“I am sorry you have to endure all this.”
“I… it’s alright, sir.”
The man took a small sip of his tea before releasing yet another sigh, his eyes boring holes at the wall across him. You have taken a seat at Jensen’s previous seat and nervously drummed your fingers on your knees. You didn’t know whether to pity the man or yourself.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. I apologize for coming here unannounced and requesting to meet you all of a sudden. My head’s not clear right now, I’m afraid I’ll have to postpone this talk. How about next week, over tea?”
“Of course, sir. I’ll look forward to it”, you replied, giving him a small smile to reassure the man.
He gave you a somber smile, you knew he was as understanding as he was trying to be given he had no real understanding for your situation. He felt the air between you two grow awkward and chose to dissolve the thick tension.
“How are you liking Texas? I heard you’ve always been the city girl, how do you like the change of scene?”
The sudden shift in casualty needed you to have a second to reestablish yourself before answering as evenly as possible. “There’s little to hate here in Texas. I especially enjoyed the company of the several deer that likes to pop up”
He tried to laugh at that. Slowly and carefully placing his cup back on the coffee table, he stood up and faced you. You too stood up with him, holding both of your hands at the front. “I better head back to my wife now. If you’ll excuse me, Miss Ackles”
You flinched at the words, but took strides with the man out the front door with as little frigidity in your shoulders as possible. It was not easy hearing your new last name. It was not easy adjusting at all.
Bidding a final goodbye, you watched Alan Ackles get into the backseat of his car, Clif at the drivers seat. Alan waved goodbye as the car pulled out of the driveway. You let out a long sigh, your shoulders slumping down as a wave of tiredness washed over you.
It was almost a blessing to see two brown haired men still at the back of your house. Jared was propped against the railing, arms crossed in front of him, the toes of his right boot clicking on the floor behind him while Misha on the other hand sat on the small steps; both of them conversing quietly.
You cautiously approached, hoping you wouldn’t be robbed of having a decent company again. The coast remained clear. At hearing your footsteps, both men turned to your direction and took sight of your form.
Misha instantly got onto his feet, a grin on his face as he went for your hands.
“Hey, you alright?”
You gave him a nod, and his expression went form worried to bright just like that. Jared came over and patted your shoulder, reassuring you, “We know Jensen can be a dick sometimes. He’s just pissed and I promise he’ll come around eventually.”
“I’m not so sure of that.” Misha let your hands escape from his hold and you tucked them in your pockets. “I’m sorry if I got you both in any trouble. Really. I’ve already come to terms that I am not who he wants me to be. I know that I’m unwelcomed and if you feel like you are obligated to make me feel better, I-I’d rather you not. I… I don’t want to be pitied and I don’t want you both to be troubled –“
“Why are you so afraid of Jensen?” Misha questioned.
“What?”
Misha crossed his arms and stood straight, his voice was not accusatory but rather genuinely puzzled. “You act as if he’s going to chop my head off if I talk to you, which I’m doing because why not and I’m not an ass like he is.”
Jared let out a small laugh from the side. “Jensen is the least of your worries, Y/N. If you had anyone to fear, I’d say it would be Clif.” The corner of Misha’s lips pulled upwards into a smirk, as if by Jared saying this he had come to a mischievous revelation.
Jared went back to leaning on the railing, and repeated what Misha had questioned you. “I don’t know why you’re afraid of him, honestly.” This time adding on, “He cried watching Marley and Me”
This took you aback. Jensen? It was practically impossible to picture the sight of him wiping tears out of his eyes while watching a movie on a dog’s life.
Misha nodded at Jared’s words. “But, like I said before, Jensen’s not that bad if you get to know him. He’s just…”
“In love with someone else?”
Misha quickly added, “- upset.”
“It’s okay, guys. I know he loves Danneel… I understand he’ll put her above me no matter the situation, but to even be seen in his eyes as something other than a nuisance is what I hope to get. I simply am not asking him to love me; I know that’s childish. I’m not asking him to like me either. I just want him to know I didn’t want this to happen as much he did. It’s just…it’s not fair.”
Both men frowned at the way your voice cracked. Misha made it a mission to make you smile the rest off the evening
Night had rolled over Texas quicker than you wanted it to. Misha and Jared stayed for dinner for a while, all the while commenting what a good cook you were as they devoured their food.
You bid them both good night and sadly watch as their car drive past eye view.
You walk back through the front door and closed the front door quietly. Turning back to move to the kitchen, you haltered in your steps as you saw Jensen descending the stairs. His eyes glanced up at yours and he rolled them as he saw you standing there frozen.
He made his way to the kitchen to grab a drink from the fridge.
“Jensen? I have dinner ready, would you like some?” your voice small, testing the waters.
“I’m going out” his answer came short behind his mug. By now he was leaning back on the sink, one hand holding his mug, the other across his abdomen. His eyes were carefully watching your movement.
You nodded at his answer. You figured you’d do the dishes later when he left and chose to sit yourself on the couch. Finishing his drink, he placed the mug at the sink and made his way out the front door and slammed the door behind him.
You had been busy entertaining yourself with the usual few cats that came near your house, mewing for food. It had become a daily night routine to come out here to feed them, watching them slowly going forward towards the food, eyes and body wary of you. It had taken you time and lots of food to earn their trust, enough trust for them to let you pet them on your lap and be comfortable enough with your presence.
You had spent the next few hours playing with the cats, not realizing what time it was. You checked your watch and realized it had turned 1 in the morning. Gently you placed the cat that was soundly asleep on your lap onto the floor and wished them goodnight. You walked back inside. Walking your way up to your bedroom, you thought of how Misha’s laugh and Jared’s chatters had kept you company all evening and now that it was gone, you could feel your dreadful reality creeping back.
You’d go right back to being nothing but a decoration – someone pretty to sit by Jensen’s side.
You deserved a shower, a time and place to think about what your life was to become and had become already.
You peeled off your clothes, kicking them off to the side as you turned the water on, turning the knob towards the warmer side. Body soaps and shampoos lined a shelf. Perhaps it was the result of your lavish upbringing, but you couldn’t get enough of soapy bubbles. A habit of pouring too much in a bath or too much on a loofa would usually have your mother scolding you at home. You figured you deserved to enjoy something in this marriage and apparently soap is that something.
“You’re going to be okay,” you scrubbed your arm, trying to console yourself. The water poured down, dripped by your side, as your mind faded into dullness and everything is nothing but a foggy illusion.
Afterwards you ran your hand through your soapy hair and hummed, content. If you could live in the solitude and warmth of a shower, you would never leave.
As you enjoyed the sensation of the steamy water calming you down, a grim thought filtered through you mind.
You had known your job here was to produce an eligible heir for the firm, but you hadn’t thought about what it took to produce an heir.
Of course, you knew how.
It just didn’t hit you until now.
You cheeks blew up red as you thought about it. You and Jensen…
You and your husband.
Lord have mercy on your heart.
You decided to turn the water colder and put your entire face under the water, in hopes the coldness would wash away all the images of you and him entangled in bed together.
Was he going to take you without your consent? You had never even kissed before your wedding day and yet…
Your sister would probably tell you to kick him in the face if he tried to force you into anything. Your parents would tell you it’s all business; that you should just get it over with. Play your part.
The traitorous romantic in you played scenes of tender caresses and hearts fusing into one, bodies moving to the rhythmic sounds of murmurs of sweet nonsense; saccharine kisses peppered between heated embraces. You tried to push those thoughts away – so silly, hopeless and dangerous to your health. He would never look at you the way he looks at Danneel, he’d never kiss you like her, and never love you like he did her.
He’s probably with her now.
You wouldn’t be surprised if he had indeed escaped into the arms of the brown haired beauty. Had you another lover, you would want to be with them as well, but you were a good girl.
You wrapped the plush towel that was left in your bathroom around your body. Even after the water had stopped, the air was steamed around you. Your soaking hair dripped on the tiles beneath your feet as you made your way back into the bedroom. The vanity was not far and your vanilla lotions would help you ease you into a peaceful sleep tonight.
You just hadn’t expected there to be another body in your bed.
It certainly wasn’t there when you had entered the shower.
His eyes were close, features much softer in sleep. The lines that usually creased his brow replaced by his youthful appearance,. He looked peaceful. He must’ve fallen asleep waiting on you, noting he still had his shoes on.
That sounded unlikely. Seemed crazy.
Unsure, you cleared your throat and slowly approached the sleeping figure, clutching the towel close to your body. The last thing you wanted was to drop your towel in front of this man. You didn’t exactly want an audience as you got dressed.
“Um…” You were standing by the bed, far enough to run but close enough to poke him with the tip of your index finger. “Excuse me?”
He didn’t shift and you silently cursed whichever God up there for putting you in this position. You held yourself and you poked him harder than before. All he did was swatting the air lazily and groaned. You let out a breath and spoke louder, “Jensen!”
His eyes snapped open and slid your way, his lips instantly cast downwards. You took a few steps back and clutched the towel tighter; thankful it covered enough. You tried to sound not so nervous under his hateful squinty glare, “I’m sorry, could you, uh, excuse yourself for a moment? Please?”
He shifted his gaze elsewhere and threw his legs over the side of the mattress, “This room was mine before it was yours.”
A blush crept up your neck and you tried to muster some strength to not stutter in front of him, “I under – “
“I’m going to leave, so don’t bother trying to act high and mighty about yourself,” he waves at your pathetic attempts at standing up for yourself and you moved to the vanity as he left the room. Your heart was beating wildly, loudly; you were sure he may have probably heard it too. You took a deep breath to calm your nerves and made a quick job of moisturizing your skin before throwing on an oversized t-shirt and comfortable shorts.
You went to the door and peeked your head out, looking for him in case he was still there. He brushed past you, opening the door and kicking his boots off near the foot of the bed and stripping off the top he was wearing.
You crossed your arms and remained at the door, away from his hostile presence.
“What are... what are you doing?”
He threw you a look. “What do you think I’m doing? I’m going to sleep. In my bed. I’m tired.”
You resisted the urge to sigh; you’ve been doing that too much lately. You couldn’t possibly sleep next to him. “Where am I supposed to sleep exactly?”
He shrugged, not caring to look at you now. “Anywhere you like. I don’t really care”
Nervously, you stepped forward, hesitant to get on bed just yet.
“No one is stopping you.”
Your eyes widened, “I, uh, I…“
He rolled his eyes, grimacing, “Listen, I don’t care what you want. I’m going to bed. You can sleep on the floor or on the bed. I’m not going to throw myself on you regardless what my father thinks I have to do.”
Well that gave you some form of reassurance as you slid under the blankets. You pushed yourself as close to the edge as possible, far away from him.
He flicked the light switch by his side of the bed, the only light on in the bedroom, and you were left to linger your thought. The dark of the room helped you pretend he was not there but it took only a slight readjustment on his end for you to be reminded that he was there.
Your heart rate was up, face red, and your nerves were bust.
What if I accidentally rolled over? What if I fell off the bed? What if he snored? Would he say anything in the morning? Would he even still be here in the morning?
You can kiss that good night’s rest goodbye.
