Ok so I finally started the endgame of Gravity Rush 2 after avoiding it like the plague because I didn't want to finish it </3

There is so much to gush about in this part but it kills me just how different Alua and Kat are, how they are the same person yet feel so different, how seeing those memories during gameplay instead of cutscenes adds to the feeling of separation

Alua was a queen, yet she was helpless and weak and frustrated as everyone around her mocked her, shut her down, and eventually tried killing her, she was unhappy and trapped and all she wanted was to help others

She becomes Kat and she's free and powerful. She lives in a pipe house and every few years people forget she exists but she's happy and carefree, she is so different from the sad girl called Alua

The poll was overwhelmingly positive so I'm posting the entire WIP. Basically the issues I ran into is that I couldn't figure out villains that made sense? Idk here it is.

“Who the fuck is that?” Katrina asked, looking across the room at a woman dressed in a white flowy shirt and leather pants. 

“What?” Josh asked loudly over the sound of what seemed to be a remixed Greensleeves.

“Who is she?” Katrina asked again, this time putting her hands on his shoulders to face him in the correct direction. 

She watched as his eyes scanned the crowd, finally resting on the woman before raising his eyebrows at her incredulously. 

“Kat, that’s Janice Wood.” 

“Why are you acting like I’m supposed to know who that is?” Katrina hissed at her friend who was looking at her with an unimpressed look.

“Because!” Josh said, gesturing around them “This was your thing first.”

Looking around at all the people dressed in vaguely period accurate dress, Katrina had to admit her best friend had a point. If it hadn’t been for an incident of theft at Josh’s first Ren Faire (and her fifth) a couple years ago the two wouldn’t be friends, much less at this party. 

Luckily D’Artanio and Lorenzo had relaxed considerably since then (if the remix of Greensleeves was anything to go by) and had invited her and Josh to their end-of-the-season bash. 

It was clear they’d forgiven the two for stealing from them, or at very least respected them enough to the period accurate soirée. Which brought Katrina to the woman who’d caught her eye. 

“Josh, who's Janice Wood?” 

“She’s like a world famous woodworker. Super big on the Faire circuit. Super big just in general honestly,” Josh explained to her, pulling up an Instagram page with 8 million followers.

“Why is she here?” Katrina asked. She liked D’Artanio and Lorenzo just fine, but she didn’t think they had that much pull.

“Your guess is as good as mine, dearest Katrina. It’s surprising enough that we’re here, much less a minor celebrity,” Josh grinned at her, waving a hand clearly dismissing the topic of conversation “Can I interest you in some shots?”

“All I’m saying!” Josh yelled somewhat drunkenly to a group of people who’d gathered, gesturing wildly with his arms “is that we as society should bring back jesters.” 

“You just want to be paid to be a goofball,” Katrina piped in from her position next to him. Somehow they’d ended up holding court at this party.

“Of course, I do, dear Katrina,” Josh continued, swooning dramatically “I missed my true calling.”

As he wheeled his arms around, Kat watched as he lost his balance, and stumbled into a shorter woman who’d been standing nearby squinting at her phone, and promptly fell on his face. 

“Sorry, sorry, sorry,” Josh raised his head and smiled sheepishly, “Are you okay?”

“I feel like I should be asking you that,” the shorter woman answered slowly, crouching down to help Josh to his feet “I’m Rachel.” 

“I’m Josh,” he replied, and Kat caught a trace of pink on his cheeks. Not that she could blame him, Rachel was very pretty in her pirate queen get up “I promise I’m not usually this clumsy.” 

“He’s not actually lying,” Katrina added “His center of gravity is just currently deeply affected. I’m Katrina.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Rachel said as she let go of Josh’s forearms, now that he was finally on his feet “I just moved to Mountport.”

“What brought you to our beautiful mountain seaside town?” Josh asked, before furrowing his brow “How do you know D’Artanio and Lorenzo?” 

Kat frowned for a moment about to tell Josh off for being rude, but Rachel seemed to appreciate Josh’s straightforwardness.. 

“The company I work for is expanding” Rachel answered “my friend got the invite and figured it would ‘get me out from behind a screen’. Her words, not mine.”

Rachel rolled her eyes, before shaking her head “Are you two locals?” 

“Born and raised,” the two said together, exchanging grins. They’d never been able to shake the habit of speaking in unison. 

“You might know my friend then, she was raised here too-“

“Or it could be the wood working world tour,” Rachel was interrupted as the woman Katrina had noticed earlier burst into their circle. 

Her flowy white top had been unbuttoned during the party, staying closed only by virtue of the tight leather pants it was tucked into.  Her short brown hair was cut into a bob, and inexplicably tucked into a backwards baseball cap. She smirked cockily at the three of them, as she took a swig of the beer she was drinking. 

“Janice...” Rachel said admonishingly. 

“I am just being realistic, Rach,” Janice shrugged, putting an arm around the shorter woman “I’m famous.” 

Katrina hated her on principle. 

“But in case you didn’t know,” Janice continued “Janice Wood, I’m good at wood.” 

“I’ve actually never heard of you,” Katrina answered, stepping forward slightly. Katrina liked to think of herself as a fairly easy going person, but Janice’s attitude had set her blood boiling. 

“We can change that,” Janice replied, stepping forward as she was clearly giving Katrina a once over and lingering at the front of her corset “It’s been a while since I’ve been back to Mountport.” 

“Too small for your ego?” Katrina shot back as she felt her rapidly rising temper fueled by the alcohol in her system. She could feel her face heat and knew that red was beginning to spread to cheeks “How do you even get famous woodworking?”

“Maybe I can teach you, babe,” Janice seemed unperturbed by Katrina’s insult as she leaned forward, and then had the audacity to wink at her.

Katrina saw red. 

Luckily Josh also knew the signs of a furious Katrina and quickly stepped up to link her arm in his and pull her away from Janice. 

“Kat!” He cried “Don’t we have somewhere to be? Chris and Barry wanted to chat.” 

“Janice, didn’t you promise Klaus and Raus you’d stop over tonight?” Rachel also seemed to be pulling her friend away. 

“I’ll guess I’ll see you another time,” Janice said, eyes still locked on Katrina as Rachel pulled her away.

“Not if I can help it,” Katrina replied, before letting Josh usher her away. 

“Well that was…” Josh trailed off as soon as they were well away from the other two. 

“Infuriating? Awful? One of the worst moments of a lived life?” 

“I was going to say heated,” Josh replied “But sure we can go with that.”

“Where does she fucking get off? Just because she’s a famous woodworker doesn’t mean she’s god’s gift to women! And then she hit on me? Who does she think I am some fucking woodworking groupie?”

“I can assure you, Katrina. That no one thinks that about you.” 

“Apparently Janice fucking Wood does!” Katrina crossed her arms in frustration, before shaking her head, and trying to calm down by changing the topic “Rachel was so nice, I wonder why she’s friends with an egotistical, arrogant-“ 

Katrina would’ve continued her rant, when she was interrupted by Rachel herself tapping on Josh's shoulder. 

“Hi, sorry about that, Janice is…” she trailed off for a moment before, shaking her head and continuing “It doesn’t matter, I just wanted to give you my number? If that’s okay?” 

“Of course! Yeah that’s totally fine! Or better than fine, brilliant? No, let’s go with awesome-“ he would’ve continued rambling if not for Katrina plucking his phone from his pocket, unlocking and handing it to Rachel. 

“It was awesome to meet you two,” Rachel replied nervously, handing Josh’s phone back to him. Katrina appreciated being included despite the fact that Rachel had very clearly not asked for her number, “We’ll talk!” 

And then she was gone, walking back in the direction she’d come. Katrina let Josh have a solid 15 seconds of looking after her before poking him in the side. 

“She’s still friends with the devil incarnate.” 

Josh shrugged and smiled sheepishly at her “Everyone has flaws?” 

Katrina snorted. She couldn’t really blame him. Rachel had been pretty and nice and clearly interested.

“You’re a moron. I hope you know that.” 

“And yet you love me.” 

Katrina sighed. She really did love him.

“C’mon idiot of mine, let’s go find some trouble.”

Fun Fact: The My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero app game possibly made a clever reference in the English Dub. When Ochaco attacks with her quirk, she tends to yell "Gravity Rush," which happens to be the name of a video-game staring another female superhero with gravity powers. (That being Kat the Gravity Queen.) It could just be a coincidence, but I'd like to imagine it was intentional.

Kat

First appearance: Gravity Rush (2012). Kat is a shifter, a person who is able to manipulate and produce gravity, at will. When doing this, her body glows red and a strange luminous heart-like object can be seen inside her chest. She can't actually fly, but because she shifts gravity, she's instead in a levitating state; when she moves through the air, she's technically "falling" in the desired direction.

Kat is a down-to-earth, intelligent, selfless girl who is willing to make personal sacrifices in order to save people in need. Despite having no memories prior to her fall to Hekseville, she is mostly very upbeat and welcomes the attention and praise of being a superhero. She demonstrates great emotional strength when confronting danger.

Kat was featured in a promotional art piece created by Guerrilla Games concept artist, Choro Choi, in celebration of International Women's Day 2019, alongside female characters from other PlayStation 4 titles.

I find myself returning often to these games only to fly (sorry, fall) around with Kat because it's just so damn fun and colors are so eye-candy. GR duology is slowly but steadily creeping up into my Top 5 fave games of all time.
