Onerous (#6) - FFXIV Write 2022
Character(s): Nylos Eros, Venat
Length: 1,162 words
Warnings: Deep sadness, talk of self-hatred
Time Period: Endwalker (specifically just after Elpis)
They sat there, in a place that felt like nowhere. It wasn’t a particular ledge. There wasn’t anything specific beneath them, nor behind them, nor above them. The seat was smooth and hard, yet not uncomfortable, and the air was somehow soothing.
They sat there, gazing out into the nothingness. It felt like just moments before, there was an inconceivable amount of thoughts in their mind, but they felt lulled into a state of some sort of serenity.
They sat there, alone, but only for a short while. Before long, they felt a presence beside them. Together they remained silent for a while longer, until at last the woman of light spoke.
“So you have at last experienced it,” she stared ahead, each word coming slowly as though to lighten the impact. “After all this time… you have met me. The me I once was, long ago.” Her glowing blue eyes settled on their figure as they continued to gaze out into the nothingness, making no movement in response.
“This… this is a dream, isn’t it?” They asked.
“It is. I have not the strength left to greet you like this once more in the waking world.”
“Meeting everyone, back when the world appeared as though it were paradise…” they turned their head from her so she could see less of their face. “Getting to see Emet-Selch at a time in his life before he had been driven mad by the loss of those he loved… being able to meet the real Hythlodaeus, a friend so dear to him and to… to me…”
Venat tightened her lips.
“I felt…” their head dropped. “I felt as though I belonged- with- with them, with you- in a- in a messed up way. It was wrong, I know that. I am not the Azem that they so adored. I am but a flawed version of him.”
“Nylos,” her tone was soft, maternal, “though it is true you are not the Azem I once knew, it does not make you a lesser being than he was. You have lived a full life with many experiences, good and bad, just as he did. You are alive and breathing, just as he had been. And before the memories of those you met in Elpis were taken from them, you were admired as your own being outside of he whose aether you share. Now in the aetherial sea, I am certain that they remember you fondly, apart from Azem.”
“I…” their voice quivered. “I just can’t help but think of all the choices I’ve made until now. How many lives have been in my hands, I…” Their chest jerked with a small, withheld sob.
Venat reached for them, cupping their cheek opposite her and gently turning their face toward her. She looked into their tear-filled eyes, one the hazel they were born with and the other a glowing pink reminder of what they’d been through. “I could not be more sorry for the onerous responsibility that has been placed upon your shoulders, my child,” she whispered, and their gaze became downcast as tears finally leapt from their lashes. “You must remember all those that would be lost if not for your intervention, as well as those that love you for who you are, and allow that to ease some of the heavy burden you carry with you.”
She leaned forward, pressing her forehead against theirs. “I want nothing more than for you to find peace within yourself. Your very existence on this star has saved countless lives, and I know you are tired. You deserve rest, but I must ask that you continue onward just a small while longer.”
There was a moment of solemn silence between them before they pulled away, Nylos’ tears continuing to fall as she brushed some hair from their face. She looked to the hands in their lap and took them both into hers, guiding them toward her and rubbing the back of their palms with her thumbs. As she witnessed them experiencing a moment of weakness, she thought about the role she had played in their state of being.
“Nylos.” Her voice was steady.
They lifted their hands from hers, using them to wipe tears from their eyes. “I-I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me.”
"Do you hate yourself?"
They froze in hesitation, her question resonating throughout their body. They gasped lightly before clenching their jaw, thinking about what she had been telling them until now. "How… could I hate someone who is… so loved by others?" They smiled, closing their eyes to avoid the serious gaze of the woman beside them.
She paused, then looking out into the distance. "I have bore witness to all that you have done in your life, how recklessly you have regarded your own body. How you’ve thrown yourself into harm's way time and again."
Nylos bit their lip, turning back away from her to hide their face.
"Do you hate yourself, my child?"
They looked down at their hands, returned to their lap, lightly holding one another.
"Why do you punish yourself - your body, your heart - for what has always been outside of your control?"
Their body trembled as they sat for some time in stunned consideration. Their lips parted for a moment before they closed them again. After some time, they took a deep, shaky breath. "I… have never been able to rid myself of this feeling… that I am capable of more. That I could have done something, something that I needed to do, but it was just out of reach. That… that if I were stronger, wiser..." Their hands squeezed into fists as their voice became as soft as a whisper. “Maybe things would be different if I were…”
Venat closed her eyes and lowered her head. "Another aspect of the enormous burden you bear because of my own choices… a weight on your sundered shoulders..."
"You did what you had to,” they looked at her, a brave little spark of stern determination in their gaze. “My suffering is not your responsibility."
"Would that it were true, my child."
A stalemate, forcing silence between them. They both sorrowfully stared into the nothingness of distance, knowing that they could forever go in circles about how none of it is really their own fault. Fate was in control from the first, and each of them needed someone to blame, even if that was their own selves.
Venat scooted closer to them, so that her shoulder touched theirs. She relaxed her head on theirs, and they settled into the crook of her neck. Her figure began to fade, indicating that too much time had passed and it was nearing their last moments like this. "Nylos, there is something I would ask of you."
"Anything, Venat," they answered, their voice gentle.
She smiled bittersweetly. "For the sake of the others who love you… for myself who loves you, as well… please...
“Take care."

The first of Many Winx Re-Write worldbuilding Info-dumps
Today’s Topic Government Systems
In canon all the planets have the exact same monarchy system of government which yeah I get, it’s part of the fantasy and all. But that’s boring and unrealistic so… I’ve come up with a simple list of the different types of government systems that will be present in my AU. These are the major ones of note and if another type ends up being relevant or I remember something I forgot I'll make another post.
Also I’m going to be listing a bunch of planets as examples here, some canon some not. I do plan on going into more detail about them later.
Grand Monarchy System
One Grand Royal Family rules the planet. Different regions are overseen and governed by Lords but the planet only has one King/Queen who has the final word on any laws passed.
Ex. Solaria, Domino, Eraklyon, Linphea, Callisto, Tenasa
Multiple Monarchies System
A planet has multiple Kings/Queens that rule over different areas. These different regions can have very different laws as there is no needed collaboration between Kings/Queens
Ex. Andros, Melody, Cosmosia, Somnia, Iris
Chosen Monarch System
The previous ruler of the planet chooses multiple candidates for their successor and if the people agree that person is given the title of King/Queen
Ex. Zenith, Dolona, Marigold, Hoggar, Dimon
Planet Chosen Ruler System
The Planet itself chooses the person who will be best suited to be its ruler and that person is given the title of "Grand Overseer". The position of Grand Overseer can be transferred at anytime
Ex. Ohm, Eros, Romulea, Illus
Singular Democracy System
One leader is voted for by the citizens of the planet. The voting process happens at least once every 5 years. All regions of the planet follow the same laws.
Ex. Nylos, Greynor, Saphria
Multiple Democracies System
Multiple leaders voted for by the citizens of the planet. Each region has at least 2 leaders. All regions follow the same basic laws but each region will have laws specific to them.
Ex. Fealma, Oasis, Aquinas, Gou
Mixed System
A planet has multiple systems of government. Each region follows its own laws and its own leaders.
Ex. Earth, Magix, Isren, Cumulus
Independent Tribes System
No direct form of government. The people living in each region follow their own specific rules. The head of the tribe is determined by different things in each region/planet
Ex. Pyros, Pulvira, Miiko

Bolt (#2) - FFXIV Write 2022
Character(s):
Tumblr media
Length: 722 words
Warnings: WOL x WOL
Time Period: Endwalker? (may change)
Nylos leaned back, examining their work and getting a feel for how they should continue. They decided to undo the last line they weaved, something about it feeling slightly off. They tried again, but it still didn’t feel right, so they determined that they should take a break.
Their idea of a break was to pick up their knitting tools and continue with that project, their hands only infrequently allowed to rest. This hat would be for a friend whose ears would be too exposed for the weather of the north, so as they always did, they worked on this creation for the sake of another. They started to hum as they got into the groove, but it was out of tune and they shook their head. It’d never sound as good as when it comes from their wife.
“That looks to be coming along nicely,” the loving voice of the aforementioned significant other suddenly broke the silence.
Nylos smiled as they looked over their shoulder. “Welcome home,” they said softly as they gazed at her.
“I’m here,” Red walked over and placed a kiss on her spouse’s head. “You’re remembering to rest your hands, aren’t you?”
“Y-yes, of course,” they lightly kicked to the side their weaving project as they continued knitting.
“Hmm, alright,” she went and sat on the couch beside them as she fiddled with something in her bag. “I’ve got something for you.”
“Hm? Oh, Red, you know you don’t have to do that,” their cheeks became warmer as they focused harder on the work before them, doing their best not to seem eager to find out what the gift could be.
“I saw it in the market, and…” her hand left her bag, with it a beautiful bolt of cloth sparkling as soon as it hit the light, “it reminded me of you, and one of the reasons why I fell in love with you.”
“R-Red!” Nylos gasped, dropping their needles as they gazed upon the gaudy glory of the cloth. “This… this is…! This is so expensive,” their amazement quickly turned into slight panic. “I… I know what recipes this is used in, but I… I don’t know if I…”
“Nonsense, my love,” Red grinned, the words sounding almost sing-songy as she spoke. “You’re a prolific weaver, you can do anything.” She leaned toward them, wrapping an arm around their waist as she kissed their head again. She pulled them close so that their back would relax against her chest, and as she did so she closed her eyes and began winding down after a hard day of work.
Despite the calm demeanor of their beloved, Nylos had become essentially frozen with indecision. Red had gotten enough of the cloth for them to make any of the crafts it was involved in. Their first thought was to always make clothing for others, but as they gazed at its twinkling beauty they couldn’t help but consider something for themself. As the tangled thoughts continued to cloud their mind, all at once they disappeared once they heard the start of their wife’s humming.
It was something she often did at the end of the day, something she didn’t really think about. Whatever tune was in her head, she would hum it gently, typically with her spouse in her arms like now. In the beginning of their relationship, she would stop humming whenever someone else was around, but now she had become so comfortable with the person she loves most that she was more than willing to hum just for them. Nylos was thankful for that, as her voice was very soothing to them, and as she hummed the slow version of a familiar tune, they leaned back into her and let out a contented sigh.
Red brought her quiet music to a slow stop. “Have you figured out what you’ll do with it?”
Nylos nodded. “I think so,” they whispered. “I… I want to be self-indulgent with this one, if that’s okay.”
“Of course,” she kissed the top of their head like always. “Anything for you.”
She began humming again as Nylos took their tools back into their hands. She squeezed her arms around them just a little as she drifted off to sleep, the two of them feeling as in love as the day they were wed.

Speculate (#7) - FFXIV Write 2021
Tumblr media
Length: 1,024 words
Warnings: None
Time Period: Post-A Realm Reborn
Character(s):
Tumblr media
The free company house was reaching the end of its “stirring” period as the members slowly woke up one by one, heading downstairs to the kitchen to eat the recommendation (requirement to some) of a large, healthy breakfast.
Red was the first awake as always, already cooking a hearty meal for her team over a hot stove. Revera woke up next, coming down to the kitchen to do her usual morning stretches; despite being able to do them anywhere, she would consistently choose a common area for companionship. Sometime later, Nylos awoke with a scraggly Ura yawning and trailing behind them. It had become routine for them to drag her from her room, regardless of if she’d slept or not, because they believed eating Red’s food was the start to a good day.
“Good morning!” The Roe cheerily greeted as she brought a spatula to the pan in her hand.
Ura simply groaned in response.
“G-g-good moooooooorning, Red. Herring. Red Herring.” Nylos froze in place.
Revera instantly got up from the stretching she’d been doing on the floor and squinted suspiciously at her Midlander friend. Their face was beet red as they averted their gaze from her, sweat trickling down from their nervously pinched brow.
“I’m almost done! Take a seat,” Red cheerily continued like nothing was strange about, well, anything.
Ura pulled a chair from the table and sat down with an extraordinarily loud yawn, failing to notice in her several days without sleep the way that her friends were behaving. Nylos made an strangely wide arc around Revera, very clearly avoiding her scrutinizing gaze as they sat across from the sleepy Miqo’te.
Without taking her eyes off of the small White Mage, Revera approached the table as well. “Say, Red, you seem awfully chipper this morning. Something good happen last night?” She smirked as she watched fear take over Nylos’ face, their jaw dropped, uncertain what their Paladin friend might say.
“Huh? O-oh,” she became unusually uncomfortable, and Revera instantly felt like she’d won. “Uh, well, last night at the beach was fun, don’t you think?”
“Sure, if you can look past the usual Ura antics,” the Viera grumbled.
“My what? The fuck are ‘ant-icks’?” Ura suddenly started paying attention, flicking out whatever she’d dug out of her ear.
“Ura, language!” Nylos cried out, forever remorseful that anyone let her learn such a word.
Red approached with four plates, two on either arm, carried with perfect balance as she delivered her home-cooked meals to her friends. “Eat up!” She said with a satisfied grin. She sat down beside them and began chowing down, unconcerned about the tense atmosphere developing between the Dragoon and the White Mage.
The group ate quietly for the most part, aside from the loud chewing on behalf of the Keeper of the Moon. Nylos took small bites as always, but ate much slower with Revera refusing to take her eyes off of them. They reached for a drink, took a big gulp, and set their cup back down, pausing for a long moment as they considered what they were about to say very, very carefully.
“Um… I have a sort of announcement to make,” they kept their attention on the half-finished plate in front of them as Revera continued staring at them, Red looked up at them as she chewed, and Ura proceeded to eat uninterrupted. They met eyes with Red, silently communicating something between them as though they were getting confirmation that what they were about to say would be alright with her. “Um… R-Red… Herring. Red Herring and I… um… we… we’ve started… um… dating.”
By the time they finished what they were saying, their face was completely consumed by blush, and Red’s cheeks were mildly flushed as well. They couldn’t help but smile at each other.
“Oh, finally,” Revera sighed, shrugging her shoulders. “I thought you two would never confess! That’s a relief,” she smacked Nylos’ shoulder, causing them to lurch forward.
“Wh-wh-what?” They couldn’t hide their panicked tone as they searched her face for the answers, but all she offered was a thrilled, toothy grin.
“What’s ‘dating’?” Ura asked with full mouth, tearing into the eggs Red had so lovingly scrambled just for her.
“It’s something people do before they get married,” Revera mischievously answered, watching with smug joy as Red choked a bit on her food and Nylos nearly spit out their drink.
“Oh.” The Miqo suddenly stopped eating, her gaze becoming distant.
Red stood up, grabbing her empty plate as she headed back to the kitchen to put together the rest of the food for their other teammates who typically liked to eat in their rooms.
“Sorry for teasing you two,” the Rava stifled a laugh. “It’s just that everyone’s known you’ve been into each other for like, ages now. We really thought you’d either never figure it out or never admit it.” She took a big gulp of her drink. “Oh, man! This means I won the bet! Haha! Ryuko’s gonna be pissed!”
“You… made a bet?” Nylos appeared like their soul was leaving their body as Red walked by them with a couple plates in her hands, kissing the top of their head to restore them before she headed upstairs.
“Yep! Alright, I’ll be going out for a jog now. See ya later Ny, give Red a big smooch for me!” Revera got up quickly and bolted up the stairs, not needing to look at their face to know it was likely burning with embarrassment.
The room became relatively quiet as things settled down. Nylos shook their head, trying to shake off the excitement from before, when they noticed Ura was just sitting there, staring at her plate.
“Ura? Is everything okay?”
“Is that why my wife left me?” She spoke in a near zombie-like tone. “Because we didn’t do dating?”
“What?”
She shuddered and suddenly stood up, running towards and up the stairs in a flash. Nylos was left there, stunned and confused. They had to shake that off, too. They resolved to help clean up, and they couldn’t help but smile as reality set in.
I’m dating Red.

Aberrant (#2) - FFXIV Write 2021
Tumblr media
Length: 1,580 words
Warnings: None
Time Period: Post-Shadowbringers
Character(s):
Tumblr media
They stepped into the room, hoping for some brief respite from the energetic party taking place in the Drowning Wench just outside the inn. It was surprisingly quiet as they closed the giant doors behind them, given the bustle just down the hall, but they felt relief wash over them as they basked in the silence.
A Warrior's work was never done, and there was still much uncertainty and danger ahead. Even with the weight of all those responsibilities, the scions needed breaks as much as anyone.
Nylos slowly walked across the room before absent-mindedly examining some miscellaneous items carefully arranged on the glamour dresser; they let their mind empty of thoughts of worry, thoughts that normally possessed and troubled them. They began to feel more tranquil when suddenly a voice broke the peaceful atmosphere.
It startled them, causing them to jerk into a defensive posture and knock over a perfume bottle, shattering it on the floor. They hardly noticed their mistake, too concerned about where the voice could have come from. Their eyes darted around the room, yet no one was there besides themself. They reached for their hip, hoping to find their rapier before realizing they'd left it in the other room, and regret washed over them for allowing themself to lower their guard in the first place.
Nylos…
The Midlander quickly whipped around, having heard the whisper as though it were coming from directly behind them, but nothing was there. Their heart pounded in their chest as a shiver went down their spine, their panicked eyes searching for the source.
Suddenly the whispering blended into more than one voice, but the trembling Hyur couldn't make out what any of it was saying. The whispers overlapped more and more until they became loud enough to cloud their ears, bouncing endlessly within their skull.
"Nylos?"
They gasped, being snapped from their stupor and realizing that they were knelt on the floor with their hands clutching their head. They looked up to see their dearest friend standing there, concern painting her expression as she began leaning down to them.
"Are you okay?" Revera's fiery pink eyes nearly glowed in the dim light, her brows pinched in worry as she put an arm around them. "Why are you crying?"
They hadn't noticed. They brought a hand to their face and felt their tear-soaked cheek. "I… um…" their words were barely audible as the Rava helped them to their feet. They stumbled a bit, but her grip kept them steady.
"What's going on with you?" She questioned as she led them to the bed, gently sitting them on the mattress.
They pinched their lips and avoided looking at her, wrapping their arms around themself, wondering how they could possibly answer that question without giving away too much.
"Nylos, I- C'mon, you haven't talked to me in eons!" Frustrations quickly began pouring out of the Viera, forcing her to start pacing in front of her friend. "It feels like you're shutting me out! I mean first with you taking all the light from the Light Wardens and being unable to handle it and telling NO ONE until you couldn't possibly hide it from us anymore, and now you're just… you're acting so weird and you think we haven't noticed? Of course we have! We all have the echo and you're the only one getting headaches lately, and you're asking us if we're hearing things that aren't there, and every time we ask about it you- you just- you close up like you can't … like you can’t trust us! Haven't we been through enough together that you can tell us when you're going through something?!?"
As she reached the end of her speech she became more exasperated, the anger manifesting in a purple-pink glow sparking from her hair. When she finally stopped pacing long enough to examine the target of her scolding, she saw them looking down at their fists closed in their lap. She stood straight, taking a deep breath and a moment to calm down before sitting down beside them.
She sat there in silence for a short while, giving them a chance to speak first if they wanted. She averted her gaze. "Please just… let us be there for you. Let me be here for you."
"I…" they tightened their fists and tried their best to hold back the tears threatening to escape. "I don't want to make anyone worry about me."
"Nylos, doing that makes us worry about you."
"...I'm sorry."
There was a long period of nothing spoken as neither of them looked at the other.
The Rava folded forward, distractedly playing with her nails to lessen the tense feeling that was building. "If you don't want to talk about it… I can't make you. But please stop pretending like you're going through it alone. We care about you, you know?"
Nylos bit their lip, their brows furrowed as they struggled with whether to say anything. They took a deep breath.
"It's been… happening... since before we met."
Revera sat up, staring at them wide-eyed. She thought for a moment. "When you lived in the Shroud?"
They nodded. Their gut twisted. They felt guilty for letting these words out of their mouth. "At first I… I thought it was just noises from the forest. People there would say 'if you listen, you can hear the trees talk' so I… it made sense." They could feel a growing resentment building within them, like they could never forgive themself for admitting the secret they'd always kept.
"It was only after leaving the Shroud that it set in that… I was hearing voices and… they had no source."
The Viera kept her eyes locked on them, watching as they became increasingly more uncomfortable, but she quietly allowed them to continue uninterrupted.
"This isn't… I haven't told anyone. Not even Red or Aymeric. I…" They spoke in a way that was nearly inaudible, so they cleared their throat to express themself more clearly. "These voices... are just whispers, and they've always been impossible to understand… until... recently..." They shook their head before placing it in their hands. "Ever since coming to the First, fusing my soul with Ardbert's… I've been able to hear what they're saying, and it's been happening so much more frequently. They keep calling to me, saying my name, and I can't… I can't do anything. It won't stop, I don't know who they are or what they want from me or if it's all in my head and none of it's real, and I… I'm… I'm scared-"
As they finished that thought, each word tumbling more carelessly from their lips than the last, a pair of strong arms wrapped around them. They closed their eyes to soak it in for a moment before returning the hug, releasing the tension that had been swallowing their entire body.
"We'll figure this out, Nylos," Revera spoke, partially muffled. "You're a scion and a part of Team Echo, remember? And even if you weren't, we're friends for life." She pulled away and put a hand on each of their cheeks. "Anything you're going through, we do it together. Stop being such a martyr," she squeezed their face just a little, clearly still a bit irritated with them as she presented a big toothy grin. "Okay?"
Nylos placed their hands on hers to free themself from her ruthless onslaught of gentle teasing. "Thank you, Revera." Their soft smile fell and they averted their gaze. "I'm… I'm sorry."
"What for?" She perked up an eyebrow.
"I didn't want to… burden you with th-"
She loudly clicked her tongue and shook her head. "Nothing makes me happier than being there for the people I love. You know how that feels, don't you?"
Their cheeks flushed as they realized they felt the same way, and they nodded in agreement.
"Of course you do! That's how we wound up being Warriors of Light in the first place! And speaking of, y'know, we've conquered both light and dark, killed primals and ‘gods’. I'm sure we can handle a few ghosts." She flexed her arm muscles and it was almost as though she were sparkling. The impromptu gunshow caused the shy Midlander to giggle just a little. "That's better. You wanna head back out to the party, or do you need some time?"
They paused, looking over the dark room, lit only by the light pouring in from the door Revera had left open. The thought of being alone again and possibly enduring another onslaught of disembodied whispers made them feel uneasy. "Can we… sneak back? I don't want to cause any… more fuss."
She squinted at them and tapped her chin. "Okay, but we'll have to tell the others eventually: don't think you're getting out of this one. Hmmm...ooh, I'll be extra loud for my grand return and you can just slide right in like you never left. Deal?"
A sense of relief washed over them. "Deal."
The Viera leapt to her feet, offering her hand to help her Hyur friend to theirs. She led them toward the exit, only letting go as they crossed the threshold. They stood in the doorway as she got a head start, turning back to look over the room one last time before closing the door behind them and heading back to the party.
The door closed with a polite click, and all was still in the room once more.

i made a reference for nylos ‘cause i was doing an art party on twitter (art from that to come) and just in case anyone wanted to draw my character, they would know how i draw them/what kind of person they are if they checked my twitter.
i don’t think anyone did, which is okay since this reference isn’t completely accurate already ldskvnsklndvb. i change my artstyle in like, the next time i draw them, and it’s a more accurate representation of them.

man we’re almost 4 months into 2020, i should post something
i’m never going to finish this one the way that i think i should, so i should really just call it done. nylos has gone through a lot of suffering over the course of final fantasy xiv’s story, two major transformations (in heavensward and shadowbringers), so i thought i’d depict those two pivotal moments where they almost completely lost themself.
you can read more about their story here
