He'd agreed to come by and pick her up this evening. He'd had a late meeting and she was out with friends not too far from his office, so naturally it made sense for his driver to swing by her venue on the way back to his place rather than have her make her way there later.

Declan left his driver with the car outside and made his way inside the club she'd told him she'd be at, his features maintaining the visual of ice; cool and calm. This despite the fact that his eyes visibly began searching the area for her as soon as he stepped inside. He looked entirely out of place, perfectly trimmed and kempt, dressed in a tailored Armani suit, a Rolex around his wrist. The sheer value of the man's attire probably surpassed the average occupant's yearly income. And yet he didn't seem bothered by the smell, the noise or fact that one person or other was intermittently bumping into him as he made his way through the crowds.

In fact, his expression didn't change until he finally spotted the gorgeous redhead on the dancefloor surrounded by several appropriately aged males, and at that point it was only for his lips to thin and brows to shift slightly higher on his forehead before his features settled back into that same indifferent mien. He watched her for a few seconds, considering the many different actions he could take, as well as the possible outcomes of those actions, before he turned around to leave.

Declan didn't usually do this. He was always accompanied; never the one to accompany another. And yet she'd somehow roped him into it. So there he was, standing outside her apartment complex, finger on the buzzer while his driver, Tim, waited in the car behind him. He was dressed in a dark blue suit with a matching west, wore a light blue button-down and slightly darker tie. Not unlike his usual attire, but then, she hadn't specified that he should wear a tux or that he should dress particularly Christmas-themed, so he'd settled on the usual.

Declan let the buzzer go once he was certain it had been heard, and took a step back from the door, hands in the pockets of his pants as he waited for Cora to make an appearance.

tldr.

after using a time machine in an attempt to travel back & save her daughter from a tragic house fire , cora sykes became caught between time & space - torn uncontrollably from era to era , remaining in one place anywhere from hours to years , but never staying .

biography.

the winter of 1879 was a harsh one , the people of canterbury facing starvation lest the cold take them first . as january crawled on , cora came into the world without a care for the cold ; a healthy baby , if not a bit small — rosy-cheeked & beaming up at her mother . among the many children who couldn't survive such conditions , cora was a miracle baby .

her parents were each from respectable names , but they lived modestly together with their children . declan came along first , seven years before cora & would never fail to remind her of it . the family lived peacefully , keeping to themselves . father was an innovator , an inventor - they lived comfortably on the wealth accrued from two patents he had sold in his youth . he continued his craft into old age , until his fingers could no longer tighten the screws . then , cora became his hands for several years . she was fascinated , eagerly learning as they went . he was particularly invested in his imagining of time travel , and once considered it his life's work before deciding it was all too theoretical to continue wasting resources upon . once declan had enlisted & been sent off to serve in the british army , the house grew quiet . most days cora could be found tucked away in her father's study , silently reading or frantically scribbling something down .

grave news befell them in the fall of 1891 , grief pouring from the home like a tidal wave . declan had been injured beyond help , & they had lost their son . cora's mother became a solemn woman after that , rarely speaking unless roused from her stony reverie . her father fell gravely ill only a few short months later - from grief , their neighbors would whisper .

cora continued to work alongside her father until he passed away . she was thirteen , feeling lost and unsure of what would be waiting if she took another step forwards . her work never ceased , endless nights spent at her father's desk . she dabbled in various small inventions , including a blueprint for a mechanical calculator and a portable sewing machine .

at seventeen , cora was betrothed to august carraway- a soldier whom she fell quickly & madly in love with . though their fleeting passion only lasted the spring , it would leave ripples that lasted a lifetime . cora's shock upon finding herself pregnant was resounding , though the outrage she expected from her mother never came . tears were shed , cora making the first real connection with her mother since declan passed . deciding not to tell august , cora remained home for the later months of her pregnancy- cared for by her mother . the last few weeks were agony , a pale blue palor to her cheeks & nausea racking her with every meal . at the end of it all , against all odds , she held a healthy baby girl . cecily .

inventions put on the backburner for the meantime , cora poured her soul into raising her daughter . there wasn't a second of cecily's life that she wished for more of her mother . an unmarried mother didn't have a chance in her time , & thusly cora claimed she was a widow . with enough circumstantial evidence & a ring she'd bought herself , the lie stuck . once cecily had grown out of infancy , cora returned to her father's desk once more .

may 2nd of 1902 woke canterbury with a gentle , warm breeze . it began as any other day would , with cora leaving cecily in the hands of her mother in order to make a brief shop run . she couldn't have been gone longer than an hour , yet it was enough time for tragedy to befall the sykes manor . when she returned to find the rubble , a distraught cora was informed that the fire had begun on the second floor . it had enveloped the stairs to the third before either occupant could descend them .

burdened with so much loss , so much grief- cora secluded herself for months , stretching into years . she couldn't mourn properly amidst so much denial , refusal to believe that this was the truth . that this was how it was meant to be . she dug out her father's old studies , his lost & forgotten equations & blueprints . time travel had been put under a microscope by renowned author h.g. wells , author of the time machine . after months of writing back & forth with wells under her brother's name & her father's acclaim , a meeting was arranged . wells was fascinated with the realization of his concept , believing they could reinvent mankind's concept of time as a whole .

after a brief stint of hesitation upon meeting her face - to - face , it grew clear that cora had earned wells' respect . they spent countless hours rapt upon their project , just as cora & her father had done so many years ago . it took two long years of devoting every minute to the machine , but they found themselves venturing closer to success . one night , in the final days of their work , cora entered the study by herself with only one thing in mind . taking a seat in the unglamorous device , she set the date & time precisely . may 2nd, 1902 .

something had been miscalculated . the machine began to thrum aggressively , growing hot to the touch . suddenly , she was standing at the seaside-- near a rocky cliff , overlooking the evening tide .
