Maybe it's just all the time I spend with The Nerd (it's definitely something to do with The Nerd, let's be real), but there's just something so fucking breathtaking and genuine to me about the Minus Win.
Just a whole team of absolute dorks, doing it for the craft and for the love of the lizard, showing up with their nerdy little shoes and their arms full of action figures, jumping and shrieking and laughing because we did it, we won.
Awards shows can feel so fake so often, but this one shining moment felt like a Wednesday night Fathom showing full of nerds in graphic t-shirts, or a Saturday afternoon on the couch with your best friend. Everyone was just cheering for Godzilla, because we love him, because we knew he could do it, because we were right.
I'm hugging my Kamata-kun plushie a little closer tonight, is all.

The movie where a woman who's mind is swapped with an actual fucking baby's and acts as such, all while being sexualized by both the characters and narrative was competing with the movie written by women and for them. As well as a movie which criticized the oil industry and portrayed the murders and forced industrialization of indigenous peoples.
Those in support of Poor Things have conveniently left out the aspects of this fucking baby being unable to consent. The grooming and manipulation showcased is, in no way, elaborated upon. A feminist movie should not be portraying a toddler in a woman's body as 'sexually liberated'. There isn't anything empowering about watching a woman with no real autonomy being used for sexual pleasure and not knowing what it fully implies or means.
Nothing meaningful is said about the themes attempted. Every plot point revolves around a single character, and even Emma Stone's performance or the pretty colors could not save this train wreck.
That being said, Godzilla sweep.

John Carpenter's reaction to Godzilla Minus One winning Best VFX at the Oscars is so heartwarming to me.
He would've been eight years old when he saw the original American release of the first film. In his preteens, he was making short claymotion movies with his favorite movie monsters, including Godzilla. He's been a fan of this series since the inception, and it just won its first Oscar. He must've been feeling like a kid again.

Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best VFX! Right after sweeping the Japanese Academy Awards in all eight of the categories it was nominated for, including Best Picture. It's super exciting to watch a kaiju film get all these wins, especially for the incredible effects Minus One had. We've come a long way since the original foam rubber suit, but you can tell, especially from this installation, that the series hasn't forgotten its roots. As I'm sure many of my internet friends here know, kaiju movies mean a lot to me, and seeing this incredible film garner such international recognition makes me really excited. Here's to seventy more years of the Big G and his continual trail of destruction.

A Wikizilla short on Godzilla Minus One's Oscar nomination, written and narrated by me and edited by @squid-in-a-party-hat. Turns out this site can't embed YouTube Shorts properly, who knew? Anyways, here's all the kaiju Oscars trivia I wrote for the comments:
King Kong has been much more successful at the Academy Awards than Godzilla. They didn’t have a prize for special effects back in 1933, but the King Kong remakes in 1976 and 2005 both prevailed in that category, while Kong: Skull Island was nominated. ‘76 also received nominations for cinematography and sound, and ‘05 won in sound mixing and sound editing.
During the opening of the 80th Academy Awards (2008), Peter Jackson’s King Kong delivered a flying kick to the TriStar Godzilla’s face.
Brad Pitt revealed that The War of the Gargantuas was the film that made him want to become an actor at the 84th Academy Awards (2012).
Japan has its own Academy Awards, which Shin Godzilla dominated in 2017. Godzilla Minus One may fare even better, having picked up 12 nominations to Shin's 10. Godzilla as an awards darling, who would’ve thought?
The 90th Academy Awards (2018) paid tribute to original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima in its In Memorium section.
Juliette Binoche (Sandra Brody in Godzilla [2014]) is the only Oscar-winning actor to appear in a Godzilla film. Other Oscar-winning or Oscar-nominated actors with kaiju connections include Nick Adams, Demián Bichir, Jeff Bridges, Adrien Brody, Bryan Cranston, Brian Donlevy, Vera Farmiga, Robert Forster, Naomie Harris, Anne Hathaway, Sally Hawkins, Brian Tyree Henry, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Jenkins, Rinko Kikuchi, Jessica Lange, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, David Strathairn, Russ Tamblyn, Ken Watanabe, and Naomie Watts.

I am so happy that the Godzilla: Minus One team won their Oscar but oh my god. Looking up the pictures of them at the Oscars is just filling me with joy because they are so happy!
They all brought a Godzilla figure with them (Takashi Yamazaki has been bringing one with him to various events, and even gifted one to Steven Speilberg, who saw the film three times and told Yamazaki how much he loved it!) But seeing as tonight was a special occasion for them all, Yamazaki brought a very special Godzilla with him - one that was dressed to the nines with his own bow tie!
But if that wasn’t incredible enough, the crew took it one step further by even dressing in the fashion of the big guy himself. They all walked the red carpet dressed to impress - especially with their own Godzilla styled shoes.
This is the first time in history that a Japanese Godzilla movie has even received an Oscar nomination, let alone win one. But with Godzilla: Minus Ones well deserved win, we see Japans first visual effect winner at the Oscars in history! And in my opinion, it’s one which is very much deserved.
To me, this is perhaps the best win of the night — so many people are loving it to see an icon from their childhood, one which brings so many fond memories of watching with family and friends, win big at this event. Godzilla movies have been with many their whole lives — the first airing in 1954 in Japan, just years after the Second World War and acting as a commentary on nuclear weapons during a time where Japan was very much recovering from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings — so it is no surprise why people are loving this win so much.

Now it’s been months after the fact and likely the spoilers are out there;
Batfamily Response to Godzilla Minus One? Their favorite scenes from it? Their viewpoint on the special effects? Commentary on its setting and plot? Etc?
This is an excellent and timely question now that Godzila: Minus One has won an Oscar for special effects. Hmmmm...
It's tradition that Dick and Tim go to see any new Godzila movie on its opening night for the midnight showing. They even do cos-play (the original 1954 movie) since the crowd is usually filled with young adults and college students. Dick dresses as Ogata (the young, handsome protagonist with perfect teeth and lush, muffiny hair). Tim is Dr. Serizawa, complete with a white lab coat and an eye-patch that Tim tends switch from eye to eye. It confuses people and he finds that amusing.
After seeing the fun these two were having the viewing party has grown over time. Jason decided to come and Damian insisted that he be included. Duke was asked to join them and thought it sounded cool. Barbara, Stephanie and Cass were also invited along. Barbara simple gave Dick a look he knew all too well and he tendered her regrets to the others. Stephanie decried it as too much in the nerd zone whereas Cass doesn't like subtitled movies ("bad translations hurt my soul") but said to ask her when the dubbed version comes out.
Jason and Damian walked several paces behind Tim and Dick (pretending they didn't know them) but Duke got an old T-Rex costume and joined in on the cos-play as Godzila. Duke wasn't the only Godzila there and the management had to remind the various kaiju in the audience to remove their heads so as not to obstruct the view of the screen.
While Dick and Tim were fully expecting a remake of the 1954 classic they were not prepared for just how good it was. The acting was top notch, the music was excellent and the special effects were mind blowing.
Being Godzilla purists, Dick and Tim loved the kaiju's first destructive romp through the Ginza. They particularly loved seeing the reenactment of the classic commuter train scene, applauding loudly along with half the audience when Godzila had the passenger car in his teeth. They both cheered at the specticle of Godzilla's atomic breath and agreed that it was even better the Legendary movie version.
Duke was enthralled by the special effects. He declared the scene where the old battle cruiser Takao takes on the monster epic and seamlees. He cheered when Godzilla swallowed the mine and then regenerated (after a rather satisfying explosion). In fact both Duke and Tim were happy to enjoy the massive property damage in the movie since they could not be blamed for any of it. The two spent the ride home trying to calculate how many new kaiju were going to come out of all of the various chunks of Godzilla from the movies' ending. Their laughter as they talked about how many cities the herd of Godzillas could demolish was vaguely disturbing.
Jason was honestly surprised how good the movie was. He declaring that, unlike the 2014 Legendary movie, he actually cared about the squishy human's stories. Considering himself the family's preeminent movie critic, Jason gave the flick his top rating of five bullets.
Damian, unsurprisingly, found himself sympathizing with Godzilla. After all, the kaiju was only doing what his instincts prompted him to. Damian's opinion that it wasn't Godzilla's fault that humans were in his territory and were attacking him.
Having been schooled in the principals of Bushido, Damian also appreciated Shikishima's need to atone for his past and the guilt he felt at surviving when his comrades did not. It was what happened to Noriko and Shikishima's vow of revenge that seemed to truly speak to Damian. He and Dick had a deep conversation on the way home about how revenge is a double sided blade that hurts you when you wield it. If the suicidal pilot had followed through with his plan then he would have denied himself the very thing he craved the most - love and a family. Of all the things Dick hoped for from the movie, a life lesson for Damian was the most welcome and the most unexpected.
#dick grayson#tim drake#jason todd#damian wayne#duke thomas#batbros#batfam#godzilla minus one#i only inflinct my kaiju nerdiness on you because Paladin-of-Nerd-fandom65 asked#i'm old i'm odd and unlikely to change at this point in my life
