New Year's Eve Favorites
New Year’s Eve rolls around just six days after Christmas, when many are still knee-deep in wrapping paper and ribbon. It’s easy to just roll New Year’s into the Christmas celebrations, doing little to mark the moment beyond watching the ball drop at midnight. But there are plenty of films centered around New Year’s that deserve their own holiday film recognition.
Updated: December 31, 2023
My Favorites…
About Time (2013) - This Richard Curtis written/directed movie is one of my all-time favorite films, period. But it all starts with a life-changing New Year’s Eve party.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) - Often considered a bit of a stealth Christmas movie, this rom-com classic ends, unforgettably, on New Year’s Eve.
The Cutting Edge (1992) - It’s hard to call this movie about a former hockey star turned Olympic figure skater “good,” in any objective sense, but that doesn’t keep me from loving it wholeheartedly. Even if you haven’t seen it 50 or so times, like I have, I doubt anyone can forget that moment when sparks fly, literally, between Doug Dorsey and Kate Moseley at a New Year’s Eve party, when they twirl into each other’s arms with sparklers at the stroke of midnight (sigh).
Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) - Not specifically holiday-themed but Brittany makes a pretty perfect New Year’s watch. Funny, inspirational and all about self-improvement. Absolutely adore this one.
About a Boy (2002) - While it also features some sweet Christmas scenes, Hugh Grant and Rachel Weisz meet cute on New Year’s Eve.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972) - The movie that defined 1970s disaster movies remains good, cheese-tastic New Year’s fun. I remember the first time I saw this one as a kid, on cable, on New Year’s Eve. A group of New Year’s revelers trying to escape a cruise ship that flips over? Indelible.
Starstruck (2021, HBO Max) - Think of season one of this 6-episode British series, written and created by a Kiwi, as a three hour rom-com that begins on New Year’s Eve and ends the following Christmas. A delightful watch any time, but extra-special during the holiday season.
Peter’s Friends (1992) - This criminally under-rated British ensemble comedy features a host of stars—Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh and Rita Rudner—gathering to celebrate the New Year at their college chum’s English estate.
Something from Tiffany’s (2022, Prime Video) - This holiday romance centers around Christmas gifts from the famous jewelry being inadvertently swapped, but most of the movie takes place between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve when everything comes to a head.
Plane (2023) - If this New Year’s Eve-set action movie leaned in just a bit more to its New Year celebration, it could reach Die Hard-style holiday classic status. While the New Year’s element doesn’t factor much after the first 15 minutes, this is a well-made, well-acted and well-paced watch. Honestly, some of Gerard Butler’s best work which, yeah, isn’t the highest bar, but Plane is a super entertaining action-disaster pic that, forgive the pun, is a lot more grounded than expected.
Other People (2016) - This very well told story about losing a loved one to cancer is funnier than you’d think, given the subject matter, has an amazing cast, led by Jesse Plemons, Molly Shannon and Bradley Whitford, and starts off with a New Year’s Eve bash.
About Fate (2022) - This American remake of a Soviet-era New Year classic, 1976′s The Irony of Fate, available to legally watch on YouTube via Mosfilm, stars Emma Roberts and Thomas Mann as recent (sort of) dumpees who meet cute due to alcohol-induced architectural confusion, and end up attending a New Year’s Eve wedding together with chaotic results, with the whole story playing out from December 30th to January 1st.
Fruitvale Station (2013) - This gut-wrenching Ryan Coogler feature directorial debut should have won Michael B. Jordan an Oscar. Set entirely on New Year’s Eve, it’s the devastating true story of the last day of Oscar Grant’s life.
Phineas and Ferb: Happy New Year (2012, Disney Channel) - This fun episode of the crazy kids’ series works as a stand-alone New Year’s special that’s better than most.
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: Two Doors Down (2019, Netflix) - Cheese-y, feel-good, queer holiday romance that ends with Dolly Parton singing Auld Lang Syne. What more could you want?
An Affair to Remember (1957) - This Cary Grant-Deborah Kerr classic is basically the third lead in Sleepless in Seattle, but it is a New Year’s classic in its own right, as Kerr and Grant’s characters vow to meet on the top of the Empire State building after an epic New Year’s Kiss.
Entrapment (1999) - There’s just something about thieves and New Year’s, I guess, as the final job in this Sean Connery-Catherine Zeta Jones film is set on Y2K. There’s also a good bit of bonus millenium Christmas content.
Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne (2021, Apple TV+) - A kid-friendly New Year's Eve watch the whole family can enjoy. Apple is doing a fantastic job of preserving the Peanuts legacy with their new holiday specials.
Holiday (1938) - Another Cary Grant classic that features a memorable New Year’s Eve. Even though the “holiday” of the title refers to a vacation, it’s on New Year’s Eve that sparks really begin to fly between Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Trouble is, she’s his fiancee’s sister.
After the Thin Man (1936) - This sequel to the runaway 1934 hit kicks off on New Year’s Eve, with James Stewart joining Myrna Loy and William Powell for more mystery solving slapstick antics.
Red, White & Royal Blue (2023, Prime Video) - Based on the book of the same name, this delightful rom-com’s President’s son-meets-Prince romance really gets going at a New Year’s Eve party, following fitful Thanksgiving-Christmas flirting via text.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) - This independent dark-ish, rom-com can be a little hard to find, but it’s worth seeking out. Two lonely people looking for hope and love by New Year’s Eve.
Ghostbusters II (1989) - Definitely less than the original classic, this holiday-set sequel concludes with New Yorker’s saving the city via a chorus of Auld Lang Syne, with an assist from Lady Liberty.
Boogie Nights (1997) - Definitely not an uplifting New Year’s Eve watch, this Paul Thomas Anderson classic does feature outstanding performances and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve party appearance by William H Macy.
Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (1976, ABC) - Not the only animated New Year’s special, but easily the most memorable, this Rankin-Bass classic has Rudolph teaming up with Baby New Year and Father Time to save the holiday.
More to Explore…
If my New Year’s picks don’t make your ball drop, there’s plenty more movies/specials set around welcoming the new year.
Happy New Year (2014) - This bouncy, Bollywood showstopper is available on Netflix.
New Year’s Eve (2011) - This farly-cynical Garry Marshall attempt to recreate the holiday anthology magic of Love, Actuallyshouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as that film, but this mess of a movie can still be fairly good fun when watched ironically with enough wine and the right friends.
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown (1986, CBS) - Nowhere near as iconic as the 1960s Peanuts specials, this is still a solid, kid-friendly New Year’s watch.
Pete the Cat: A Groovy New Year (2017, Amazon Prime) - Hep cat animated special based on the popular children’s book character.
200 Cigarettes (1999) - Set in the 1980s, this follows a group of young New Yorkers looking for a memorable New Year’s Eve.
Snowpiercer (2013) - The Chris Evans dystopian thriller where civilization is relegated to an always moving train, strictly divided by class, and New Year’s is celebrated every time they circumnavigate the globe.
Highball (1997) - This very early, extremely low budget Noah Baumbach movie takes place over a series of holiday parties that culminates with a New Year’s Eve bash. Is it good? Well, Baumbach petitioned to have his name removed from it, so…
Waiting to Exhale (1995) - This movie about a close-knit friend group and their complicated romantic lives, based on the book by Terry McMillan, is framed by New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Four Rooms (1995) - This overly ambitious anthology, featuring four stories each written and directed by a different high profile auteur, with only one connecting character, a hotel bellman, takes place entirely on New Year’s Eve.
Ocean’s Eleven (1960) - The Rat Pack original isn’t as fun as the George Clooney-Brad Pitt remakes, but it does set its heist on New Year’s Eve.
The Sword in the Stone (1963) - This Disney animated classic’s pivotal moment—the extraction of Excalibur—occurs at the New Year’s tournament, which Arthur attends as a lowly squire.
The Godfather Part II (1972) - Fredo Corleone is handing out New Year’s party kisses in this, the only sequel to ever win the best picture Oscar.
Midnighters (2017) - When a couple accidentally hit a man with their car on New Year’s Eve, they put him in the backseat and go home to avoid the consequences.
Radio Days (1987) - This Woody Allen (yeah, I know) movie ends with the cast welcoming 1944 on a wintry New York, New Year’s Eve.
Repeat Performance (1947) - A New Year’s Eve wish to repeat the year comes true, but fixing mistakes made proves more difficult than Joan Leslie imagined.
Sunset Boulevard (1950) - The iconic tale, later turned into a Broadway musical, hinges on a New Year’s Eve party.
A Midnight Kiss (2018, Hallmark) - Carlos PenaVega helps Adelaide Kane plan a New Year’s bash.
Royal New Year’s Eve (2017, Hallmark) - Designer Jessy Schram meets her Prince at a New Year’s ball.
The Birthday Wish (2017, Hallmark) - This is another Jessy Schram-joint that starts at New Year’s and is one of the more original Hallmark movies of recent years.
A New Year’s Resolution (2021, Hallmark) - This long-delayed Aimee Teegarden and Michael Rad movie finally got an airdate in early 2021.
Midnight at the Magnolia (2020, Netflix) - Natalie Hall and Evan Williams are radio hosts who fake a romance for a New Year’s Eve live show.
A Year and Change (2015) - Bryan Greenberg topples off a roof at a New Year’s Eve party, leading him to change his life.
The Gold Rush (1925) - For those who like their New Year’s celebrations extra-classic, this iconic Charlie Chaplin outing features the Little Tramp all alone on New Year’s Eve.
Two Lovers (2008) - This little-known Joaquin Phoenix-Gwenyth Paltrow movie culminates on New Year’s Eve.
Strange Days (1995) - Kathryn Bigelow’s sci-fi/romance prominently features a plot pivotal New Year’s Eve party.
Hudsucker Proxy (1994) - Some have called this critically-panned Tim Robbins movie It’s a Wonderful Life for New Year’s Eve. It even features Charles Durning as an angel.
Poseidon (2006) - This overly serious remake was a box office flop, but it’s still a big, dumb New Year’s Eve disaster flick. Just be careful it’s extra-long run time doesn’t make you miss the ball drop.
Money Train (1995) - This heist film starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson (remember when those guys were leading men and action stars?) has these former cops robbing the NYC subway on New Year’s Eve.
Are We There Yet? (2005) - Ice Cube’s original road trip comedy takes place on New Year’s Eve.
Carol (2015) - It’s a New Year’s Eve party that lets these repressed ladies first turn their passion loose.
Phantom Thread (2017) - Not mostly about the holiday, but does feature one of the most visually stunning New Year’s Eve parties ever committed to film.
New Year’s Evil (1980) - It wouldn’t be a holiday without a bad slasher film taking place on it.
Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) - The ladies celebrate a very memorable New Year’s Eves in this movie, based on the HBO series.
A Frozen New Year’s Eve (2019) - Direct-to-VOD animated kids’ movie
Dr Who: The Movie (1996, BBC) - The Time Lord takes on the millennium in this made-for-TV movie.
New Year’s Day (1989) - This little known movie is David Duchovny’s first major role. He plays a man who moves to L.A. on New Year’s Eve, only to find his newly-rented apartment occupied by three women.
A Long Way Down (2014) - Four strangers meet on a rooftop on New Year’s Eve, each contemplating jumping.
Endings, Beginnings (2020) - This Shailene Woodley-starring movie features a love triangle that begins at a fateful New Year’s Eve party.
Do It Yourself, Mr. Bean (1994, ITV) - Mr. Bean plans a New Year’s bash in this ITV special.
A Month in Thailand (2012) - This Romanian film follows a man in the time between Christmas and New Year’s trying to decide if he should pursue the ex who broke his heart, or stick with his current adoring girlfriend.
The Shining (1980) - This bleak, wintery horror classic wouldn’t be the most uplifting way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, but its plot pivotal NYE party photo certainly makes it seasonally appropriate if you’re looking to scream in the New Year.
Age of Adaline (2015) - This very weird movie starring Harrison Ford and Blake Lively begins at a New Year’s Eve party, with the holiday holding other significance in the story.
New Year, New You (2018, Hulu) - New Year’s entry in the Blumhouse-produced horror, holiday anthology movie series.
What for New Year’s Eve? (2018, a.k.a. Cosa Fai a Capodanno?) - This Italian comedy-drama from writer-director Filippo Bologna recently became available in the U.S. and explores what happens when a group of friends decide to switch partners at a New Year’s Eve party.

*If I hadn’t already dubbed Bridget my all-time favorite stealth Christmas movie, I’d have put it on my New Year’s list for sure, probably at No. 1, since Jones’s New Year’s resolutions bookend the film, which actually starts on New Year’s Day (when she meets Darcy at her mom’s annual turkey curry buffet). Really, it’s a pretty perfect New Year’s watch and an annual in between Christmas and New Year’s must-view in our house.
**As with Bridget, Last Holiday would be at or near the top of my New Year’s favorites, if I hadn’t already dubbed it one of my favorite Christmas films. But, while it takes place over the entire Christmas season, much more happens on New Year’s in this Queen Latifah classic, than Christmas, and it’s a great way to spend any New Year’s Eve.
***And the same goes for The Holiday, which is mostly Christmas, but culminates on New Year’s Eve, the only part of the film where all four leads share a scene.
****Yet another that would be at or near the top of my New Year’s list, if it weren’t already on my Top 25 Stealth Christmas Movies list, as the New Year’s Eve in Holidate was among its best, and most memorable, moments.
*****Starstruck takes the opposite tack of the rest of this list, starting on New Year’s Eve and ending at Christmas.
TV Series Standouts
While Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed episodes of TV series abound, the timing of New Year’s, coming when most shows are on hiatus, means there are only a few truly iconic television episodes devoted to this holiday. A handful worth noting…
Mum: December (2016, BBC, series 1)
Absolutely Fabulous: Happy New Year (1995, BBC, series 3)
Dr. Who: Resolution (2019, BBC)
On My Block: Chapter Eleven (2019, Netflix)
My So-Called Life: Resolutions (1995, ABC, season 1)
The X-Files: Millennium (1999, FOX, season 7)
Futurama: Space Pilot 3000 (1999, FOX, pilot) - Like Matt Groening’s Christmas-themed Simpson’s pilot, this series intro could also be seen as a New Year’s Eve holiday special.)
That ‘70s Show: Finale (2006, FOX, season 8) -Though it aired in May, this series ender was set on New Year’s Eve 1979
Fraiser: RDWRER (2000, NBC, season 7)
30 Rock: Klaus and Greta (2010, NBC, season 4)
Friends: The One with the Monkey (1994, NBC, season 1)
Friends: The One With All the Resolutions (1999, NBC, season 5)
Friends: The One with the Routine (1999, NBC, season 6)
Modern Family: New Year’s Eve (2013, ABC, season 4)
How I Met Your Mother: The Limo (2005, CBS, season 1)
How I Met Your Mother: Tailgate (2012, CBS, season 7)
The Office: Ultimatum (2011, NBC, season 7)
Seinfeld: The Millennium (1997, NBC, season 8) - This one actually doesn’t take place at New Year’s, but is about a New Year’s Eve party

❛❛ Ah yes, the age-old tradition of an obese old man dressed in a red suit - breaking into your house. ❜❜
Both Gods are seated in big, comfy chairs in front of the crackling fireplace. Ryūjin has both his tender hands enclosed around a sizeable mug painted with cliché holiday colours and its contents filled with–what is this spicy drink? He doesn’t bother to question the liquid he’s being fed because it makes him feel warm with every sip. He’s never been one to celebrate holidays, mostly because he always finds himself occupied with other tasks. By the time he looks out his window, the festive day would have already gone by. It’s rather pleasant to finally be able to sit around and relax, even if it was simply to share peaceful company by a fireplace like this.
He chuckles outwardly at the image of Santa breaking into a home in some unconventional way, but he entertains the idea, “How does he fit through chimneys then if he’s so obese? I’d think that the only gift we’d receive is a cheque to replace our broken window. He glances over at said window as he takes a sip of his drink. “Anyway, here’s to having one day out of the year to excuse ourselves from our busy lives to indulge in ridiculous festivities and notions of old, grey, fat men.” He says this with the same, playful and sarcastic tone as Poseidon’s, even though the sentence does hold some sort of truth.

Tagged by @stillneedsmorekissing, thank you!
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
(For my sanity’s sake I am taking this as only the actual works that are IN PROGESS, not the sad abandoned files that will never see the light of day but that I am also too cowardly and attached to delete.)

HBO Max New Releases: October 2021
https://ift.tt/39ZMSFm
The fall is usually the domain of television. September and October are the months in which networks (and increasingly some streamers) debut all their new series. With its list of new releases for October 2021, however, HBO Max has decided that fall works just fine for new movies as well.
HBO Max’s new offerings this month are highlighted by two enormous Warner Bros. film releases. The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark opens things up on Oct. 1. The movie is getting a theatrical release as well but you can certainly just watch it via streaming to make Sopranos creator and film purist David Chase mad. Next up is the sprawling sci-fi epic Dune on Oct. 22. It’s long been thought that a faithful and suitably enormous Dune adaptation was impossible. Now it’s almost time to see if director Denis Villenueve pulled it off.

Even if the movies are the big blockbusters here, HBO Max isn’t letting its TV offerings go to waste. Arguably HBO’s biggest running drama, Succession, returns for a long-awaited third season on Oct. 17. Also mixed in to the streamer’s TV offerings are docuseries like 15 Minutes of Shame (Oct. 7) and What Happened, Brittany Murphy? (Oct. 15).
October will also be a good month for movie fans looking to check out some recent heavy hitters without buying a ticket. It: Chapter Two (Oct. 10), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (Oct. 21), and In the Heights (Oct. 28) all arrive this month.

Stomach Aches and Sugar Cookies 🍂
Taehyung can’t keep his hands off of you and, you don’t really understand why.
Pairing: Uni!Taehyung x Reader
Genre: Fluff (a wee bit of angst but, just like a teeny bit)
Word Count: 1.3k
Universe: Fear and Dumplings
Warnings: suggestive content, minor minor angst, a brief mention of insecurities
Based on: this ask x
A/N: Hello and welcome to another installment of Merry Crizzmizz 2019 ! I’m so excited for the rest of the fics and, I wanna thank all of you for sending in your requests, I hope you enjoy what I’ve come up with. This can be read as a stand alone but, I highly recommend reading Fear and Dumplings as it’s based in that universe. Happy Holidays ladz!!!
Back to the masterlist! (click here)
Crisp vanilla and sugared cinnamon hang loosely in the air around your boyfriend’s kitchen.
You’ve been here for awhile now, baking cookies, chatting about finals and, trying to hide the fact that you’re absolutely FREEZING.
Taehyung just moved into a new apartment building downtown and, while the view is nice and, the hardware is aesthetically pleasing, you’re starting to wonder whether or not the place has a central heating system.
“Yeah so, I don’t know, I think he’s gonna do it this weekend, isn’t that crazy? I can’t imagine how nervous he must be...I kinda wish I was there to see it.” Taehyung concludes his story, his strong hands needing a roll of sugar cookie dough against the counter.
Your attempts to respond are thwarted by the very obvious shiver that wracks through your body.
“Babe? Are you ok? Your teeth are chattering...” He furrows his prominent brow at you, frowning as he moves away from his current task. “Are you cold?”
His last question is paired with his hand clasping around your wrist, tugging you towards the warmth of his body.
“M’fine...” You giggle, swooning as you come in contact with his chest, taking note of the citrus notes in his cologne, “S-sorry, I usually blast my heater back at my place.”
He shoots a boxy smile your way and, you have to tell yourself to CHILL when he starts running his hands up and down your back.
“Yahhh why didn’t you say anything hm? Here...” He steps back a bit before hooking his fingers under the collar of his white sweatershirt and, tugging it over his head, “Put this on.”
Dear sweet Poseidon...
Taehyung is stood before you now, in nothing but a tight black under shirt, the muscles of his frame rippling against the material.
You attempt not to gawk at him as you clutch the material in your hands, “Wait but, what about you?”
He shrugs, the boxy smile still lingering on his lips as he nods towards the bedroom, “I’ll go put something else on...just try and get warm for me yeah? I’ll be right back.”
With his sentence, he leans in placing a few kisses against your cheek, his hand sliding around your waist momentarily before he heads off to his room.
As soon as he leaves, you wipe a hand over your face, doing your best to calm yourself.
You’ve been dating Tae for a month or so and, tonight, you’re finally staying over at his place for the first time.
Things have been going well but, if you’re being honest, you’re feeling a little off tonight.
You like him, you really do but, he’s so openly affectionate with you and, god you just feel so freaking awkward sometimes!
Like, you just wish you could get of your own head...
But, this is all so new to you.
You’ve spent most of your life focused on your schoolwork and your career that up until you met Taehyung, you’ve kept romance on the back burner.
Things are settling down now though and, you’re starting to think you want to follow suit...
Taehyung obviously exceeds your wildest expectations and, if you’re being honest, you don’t fully understand how you got so lucky.
“Did you miss me?” He’s voice sounds like cinnamon in your ear, his arms wrapping around your waist.
Red cashmere now adorns his forearms suggesting that he slipped on another sweater whilst he was in his room.
“H- yes...” You giggle, leaning back against him, trying to control the rapid beating of your heart, “the second batch is almost done...did you still want hot chocolate?”
Taehyung smirks fondly at you, kissing your cheek again, “Mm definitely...do you want marshmallows in yours?”
“Extra pleaase...” You blush against his lips and, Taehyung has to refrain from taking a bite out of your cheek.
“Extra? She wants extra huh? I’ll see what I can do...” He chuckles warmly, hugging you closer to him, “Do you feel a little warmer now?”
Although every bit of your defenses wants to come up, you tell yourself to relax and, enjoy your boyfriend’s attention.
Because you want it, you really do.
You’re just not used to it.
“Yeah, thank you. I’m definitely going to need extra blankets during the movie though...” You smile, dusting the cutting board with more flour.
He smirks, “Extra marshmallows and extra blankets...got it. Whatever you want...” Taehyung’s voice lowers significantly at the end of his sentence and, the next thing you know, you feel a fingers hook underneath your chin.
Seconds later, you’re met with the plush sensation of your boyfriend’s lips, causing your heart to halt momentarily.
“Sorry...you just look really cute when you’re concentrating.” He murmurs against your lips, pecking them once more before patting your hips as he pulls away, “Alright...I gotta get to work on our hot chocolate or else I’m just gonna stay here kissing you all night.”
You find yourself pouting as he pulls away, “That’s not a baaad thing...”
He smirks again, taking his place over by the Keurig, brown eyes scanning the counter for the box of hot chocolate.
“No, its definitely not.” He concedes, mischief in his eyes, “But, I need to get this hot chocolate done and, you need to take those cookies out of the oven before they burn.”
Taehyung nods thoughtfully towards the oven and, it’s then you notice the crisp scent of ALMOST burnt cookies in the air.
“Shit…you’re right…” You giggle, attempting to turn towards the oven but, Taehyung stops you to place yet another kiss against your lips.
“Ok…ok, you can go now.” He smirks, patting at your hips, disregarding the fact that he’s actions are leaving you breathless.
“If the cookies are burnt it’s your fault.”
Taehyung just snickers, flashing the brilliant white of his teeth before turning back to the Keurig
Moments later, under the glow of the Christmas lights, the two of you are snuggled up under a few (extra) blankets, with a mug of steaming hot cocoa for each of you.
“I’m really happy you’re here.” He murmurs, his head resting on your shoulder.
With another flutter in your chest, you smile, glancing down at him, “I’m happy I’m here too.”
Taehyung is content with your answer, cuddling a little closer to you in response but, you feel the need to say something else.
“Thank you for always being patient with me, this is all kinda new and, I don’t know what to do with all of your affection sometimes but,” As you pause, he turns up towards you, eyes riddled with concentration and a bit of concern, “…I like it. I like you a lot.”
A brilliant boxy smile is on his lips then and, he sits up fully to face you, “Hey…you don’t need to apologize to me you know that right? This is new for me too and, I’m just happy to have you in whatever way you’re most comfortable with. I like you a lot too Y/N but, if you need me to tone it down let me know ok? I never want you to feel uncomfortable.”
His words fill your heart with admiration and, instead of speaking you lean down towards his lips, initiating a kiss on your own for the first time.
He’s happy to reciprocate, letting out a deep breath through his nose as his hand comes up to cup your cheek.
“Don’t…uh, don’t tone it down…” You whisper, your eyes still closed before you kiss him again.
Taehyung just smiles into your lips, allowing you to indulge with him as you see fit.
The kissing escalates slightly but, the two of you seem to make a conscious choice to slow down, still pecking at each other’s lips as you pull apart.
“Are you warm enough now?” He whispers, smiling again as you open your eyes.
“Yes.” You smile, before he pulls you into his arms.

Read on AO3
Riza Hawkeye's first memories were of the sea.
She remembered her mother pulling her up to peer over the bow of their ship, the Lady Elizabeth. The salt air had stung the young girl’s round face and caught the wispy ends of her dirty blonde hair. But even from the tender age of five, Riza saw freedom hanging just beyond the horizon, and she never once yearned for life on dry land. It was fair to say that Hawkeye earned her sea legs before she even learned to walk, born below deck and raised in the captain's quarters alongside a cabin boy who would one day become king of her floating castle.
At first, Riza resented her father’s deathbed decision to name Roy Mustang the captain and she the sailing master. By rights, the Lady Elizabeth was her property, but with time, she began to understand Berthold’s twisted, if accurate, logic. Captain Mustang had a dashing persona and an innate understanding of the way the world worked both at port and sea. He wielded his charism like a weapon, narrowly escaping one close call after another while Hawkeye tended to reply on the pistol tucked into her sash and the dagger hidden in her boot.
On nights like this one, Riza marveled at the way the crew responded to Captain Mustang’s confidence, even as she knew their ship was all but lost.
Lightning cracked the sky overhead as its tendrils cut the darkness to pieces. The weather had turned quickly, leaving precious little time to secure the sails and batten down the hatches, much less head further out to the open sea. Tempest winds rocked the ship back and forth, and the ship's sturdy planks groaned with the effort of resisting the melee.
“Tether yourselves to the ship,” Captain Mustang called out, “and get Furey down from the rafters.”
Disregarding his own well being, Quartermaster Havoc wrapped a length of rope around Hawkeye’s waist as she gripped the ship’s wheel and heaved it back into position. Overhead, Kain Fuery flew like a sparrow amongst the sails, as lithe as a dancer with the hardened edge of a seasoned boatswain. Only the young Elric brothers could hope to match his agility.
“Should we drop anchors, Captain?” Edward yelled. His pitchy voice strained against the wind and rain.
“Aye, do it now!”
No sooner than the word was given than Riza heard the telltale sound of metal scratching the deck and chains plummeting into the depths. For a split second, Hawkeye glanced in her captain’s direction and graced him with a stern but approving nod. They were going to make it. The storm would not…
No sooner had Roy’s onyx eyes met’s Riza’s copper gaze than the boat lurched, side-swept by the changeable tide. Wind battered the Lady Elizabeth’s starboard side, and the chain securing the anchors strained under the pressure, working against the vessel's integrity. It was then that both the captain and his sailing master remembered the damaged mainsail as well as the purpose of their journey to Tortuga — much-needed repairs. Another gust struck the ship sideways, and the Lady Elizabeth began to falter, her rafters snapped and the craft started to fall to ruin. In a split second, Hawkeye made a decision, communicated to her captain with little more than a look as the crew’s bodies were thrown about the tipping ship heading sidelong toward the craggy coastline.
“Abandon ship!”
Experienced sailors readied the rowboats, tossing supplies and helping injured crewmates into the smaller crafts. Riza’s hands tightened on the wheel even as she untied the tether at her waist. Hawkeye braced herself for as long as she could against the pull of the tide.
A flash of green caught Hawkeye’s sharp eye, and she glanced sideways to spy the ship’s quartermaster wedged beneath a pile of fallen debris. The bright green sash given to him by his sweetheart fluttered in the gale-force winds. Jean Havoc struggled to free his legs. His panic-stricken face paled as fresh blood painted the deck.
Hawkeye moved without the memory of deciding to do so. Her boots pounded against the worn planks as her spirit raged against the storm. All the while, she thought to herself that it was bad enough to lose her mother's ship. She refused to lose Jean as well, a crewmate and her friend.
“Havoc,” Riza cried as she reached him and pushed the wreckage from his legs. "We've got to go!"
Grabbing the muscled man under his arms and hoisting him upward, Riza helped him to the port side of the ship, closest to the shore. Both seafarers gripped the banister and looked down at the last remaining rowboat as a sickening crack sounded from above and the mainsail finally gave way.
“JUMP!”
For a moment, Riza felt her body suspended in midair alongside the injured quartermaster, and during those precious seconds, she traveled back in time. Gone was the wind whipping her loose shirt and pull of trousers skimming the contours of her legs. The pistol at the young woman’s waist fell away, and it was replaced by a child’s coin purse stuffed full of spending money for the market at Riza's favorite seaside town.
When Riza looked down, she did not see Captain Mustang. Instead, her mind's eye conjured images of 16-year-old Roy, dirty-faced but strong and freshly promoted to a full-fledged crewmate. The mischievous dark-haired boy laughed as he waited with open arms to catch her, and Riza trusted that he would let her fall. She knew they would find their way again, however hard they had to work to resurrect the Lady Elizabeth from Poseidon's grasp.
...
“Roy!”
Riza awoke with a start and sat up suddenly, clutching a bandaged area around her chest. She gasped for breath as her mind reeled, pulled unceremoniously from the unpredictable waters of the Carribean to a soft bed in a small room adorned with lace curtains that fluttered in the gentle breeze.
In the corner of the room, a familiar figure dozed in a moth-eaten armchair. Roy’s head lolled against the wall. His clothes seemed fresh-pressed and dry though his arm was bandaged and hung in a sling.
“Easy does it, girl,” a gravely female voice sounded from Riza’s bedside, accompanied by heavy footsteps against the house’s wooden floor. “You took quite a knock on the head and broke a few ribs in your fall, I suspect. Roy-boy brought you and the rest of the crew here last night. You’ve all been lucky to wreck so close to Tortuga. All except for that blond boy. Shame that, with a body like his.”
“You mean Havoc,” Riza interjected. “Did he… Is he…”
The older lady sighed and placed a basin of water on Riza’s bedside table. Even under the pressure of Riza’s unspoken inquiries, she took her time. The woman straightened up and tucked a lock of dark hair behind her bejeweled ear. The deep lines of her aged face betrayed no emotion.
“He’s alive if that’s what you asking,” she clarified, “but I can’t say he’ll walk again. Now, clean yourself up. I’ll send Madeline in to check your wounds and redress them if necessary. Unless, of course, you’d like Roy-boy to do it. He was very insistent that no one see your back.”
At the mention of her tattoo, Riza laid back. She pressed her neck against the pillows and swallowed hard. Briefly, she searched the older woman’s face for a sign of recognition and marveled that Roy would expose the map to anyone outside their small circle of trusted equals. It was said that Van Hohenheim’s treasure was without compare, containing treasure greater than gold that could reverse death itself. Roy sought it for his departed best friend and Riza for her mother.
In response, the women merely chuckled. “Smart girl. I wouldn't trust me either,” she said, turning her back to Riza and walking toward the door, “but in this case, I think we’d both be proven wrong. They call me Madame Christmas around these parts, but you can call me Chris Mustang.”
She thrust the door of the room open, ushering in sights and sounds from the tavern below. From her perch on the bed, Riza spied a few familiar figures moving with ease around the barroom. Riza breathed a sigh of relief when she heard the comforting sound of Heymans Breda’s fiddle, Alex Armstrong’s boisterous laugh and the Elrics squabbling over the merry ruckus. The smell of beer and freshly baked bread soothed her senses as effectively as the gentle lapping of calm waves against the shore.
“Welcome to The Prodigal Son Tavern and Inn, Miss Hawkeye,” Chris announced. She threw a softer glance in Roy’s direction as he snoozed peacefully through the hubbub. “It’s nice to have its namesake back again.”
And though Riza missed the sound of seagulls and feel of the sun on her freckled skin, she was content that the Lady Elizabeth’s grand misadventure had somehow lead her to a place that felt like home.
A/N: When I saw the shipwrecked prompt, I had to do this even though I know nothing about sailing. This chapter is heavily inspired by @tomochingus' ridiculously amazing Pirate AU art. No, I did not ask permission to write this. Yes, I do feel a little bad about that, and if anyone if upset at me, I am sorry. I just really wanted to share this! As always, please send me pairing requests for particular Fictober prompts through my tumblr. I've got one prompt (YAY), and I'll be working on it soon. Otherwise, if you read something you like, let me know. Your kudos, bookmarks, subscriptions, comments, likes and reblogs mean so much to me.
