alright, now that we've finished the DCEU watch, let's pick up where we left off with Studio Ghibli, and get this Takahata movie over with so i can move on to movies by directors whose work i actually enjoy (though who knows, maybe this will actually be the first Takahata movie i actually like even though i hate his aesthetic choices in every movie of his so far and i don't like how he tells stories). now seated for My Neighbors The Yamadas (1999). know nothing, as usual, and thankfully this is under 2 hours so at least it'll be over quick.

🧿what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?

One of the best skills I learned in undergrad was how to take (and give) constructive criticism. And while a fic not doing as well as I'd like isn't the same thing, (because you should NEVER. EVER. give unsolicited concrit, E V E R), the ability to distance yourself from your own work and not see a story that doesn't meet expectations as a personal failure is a very similar skillset.

It sucks when a fic doesn't do as well as you hope, especially if you were REALLY excited about it. But it isn't a reflection on you. Sometimes you don't catch the right reblog, or post at an off time, or the pairing/subject matter just isn't the flavor people are looking for. There are so many factors, none of which have to do with you as a person.

And internalizing that and believing that is not an easy thing to do, and even when you can, it still stings.

So what I have done, and what I encourage others who struggle with this to do, is to get yourself a hype man. Sometimes you don't need concrit or a beta, sometimes you need aggressive positivity. The person who will sit you down, take you by the shoulders, look you in the eye and shake you while they tell you how great that story is, and how proud they are of you for working so hard on it.

@urrone has been doing this for me for over 20 years, and is a force of nature when I need positive reinforcement.

It is perfectly okay to tell someone you need some cheerleading.

Get yourself a hype man, and be someone's hype man in return.

not to just whine about things but

things with my grandma are Not Good, which is stressful and thinking about the mortality of people i love is Not Fun Ever

and this means that my dad is Very Stressed and Frustrated about things and also Exhausted (and i think reaching a limit)

which means that my mom is Stressed and Frustrated about things

which means that i have to listen to them both vent to each other and also separately vent to ME

which means i am Very Stressed and Uncomfortable when i'm ALREADY stressed about work stuff and general sarah's-life stuff

and there is absolutely no good solution to this. none. at all.

After my Miyazaki poll exploded on the Tumblr scene, I felt compelled to cover more Ghibli... 👀

Sooooo...... this was hard. Because discounting the Miyazaki directed AND written films, there's still a lot of Ghibli films. In order to be fair to the other Ghibli directors, I made the focus on them, however, I also knew that Miyazaki fans would lose their MINDS without a shoutout to the three non-directed films which he helped write the screenplays, especially since I couldn't squeeze them on my original poll.

Alas, until Tumblr polls are longer, a girl's gotta make do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
