"Pull yourself together professor." Camilla's voice was gentle as she spoke, shielding the young dragon prince from prying eyes. She handed him a handkerchief. "There are students watching, won't you put on a brave face for them?"

Kurthnaga sniffles slightly as he takes the handkerchief from Camilla. Her words are somewhat harsh, but her actions are kind. And he can't help but be reminded of his own sister once again. Of course, Almedha probably would have fretted much more over him, but the feeling is there nevertheless.

Look, I finished Gideon the Ninth and then binged the entire fic tag, because that book broke into my house, sniped me with my own loyalty kink, and stole my kneecaps. I needed emotional support. And also Gideon and Harrowhark to kiss. Here are some fics you should read.

Ones you Probably Haven’t Read (<100 kudos):

Once Upon a Time with Her Divine Highness... by juurensha - The only reason you haven’t read this yet is that it was literally posted this morning. It’s a griddlehark fake dating royalty au, and I love it so much. Incomplete.

space luge is also cancelled (and all other events are pending) by Anonymous - Post-Canon fix-it for GtN, not HtN compliant, technically AU. But, like, it fixes all the stuff you want fixed and then it stacks a cat and a soulbond on top. Also, I love it.

Bigger Than These Bones by feaverbeats - In which Harrow and Gideon are horrible teenagers, but Harrow is worse. Harrow’s thought process in this one is a delight, nasty yet logical and perfectly in line with canon.

The Ninth Indivisible by yhlee - A post-pool-scene fic, except it takes a hard left into AU and ends up with them on the run in space. It’s audacious, it’s badass, and best of all, it’s technically a fix it. Extremely worth reading.

Dance by Nununununu - Yet another post-pool-scene fic. This one is notable because it’s fun and it’s funny and it makes me want to smile, unlike the barely contained tragedy of other fics. Read to give our girls a well-earned break.

Yes You’ve Read It but Fuck It I’m Reccing Anyways (>100 kudos):

first flower blooming red by sixofsextants - Flower shop AU, set in a canon where Harrow’s parents saved the ninth another way. It manages to make Harrow in a flower shop work, which I was extremely dubious about, and the pining is just *chefkiss*.

Skin Flick by JeanLuciferGohard - Yes, I know, it’s literally the second fic in the tag if you sort by kudos, but this was the fic that was so in character it made me look up the author’s tumblr to make sure it wasn’t Tamsyn Muir writing fanfiction of her own book. It’s earned it. (Post-Pool NSFW funtimes)

these violent delights by strangehunger - The scene where Protesilaus draws on Gideon (waaay at the beginning of the book) but from Harrow’s POV. I extremely wanted to know what she was thinking, and this fic delivered.

Safe Words by zoicite - Post-pool, Harrow and Gideon are figuring out how to be friends. It’s sweet and hopeful and does a singularly good job portraying how Camilla got Harrow in handcuffs.

Service to the Ninth by zoicite - In which Harrow and Gideon are horrible teenagers, but this time it’s NSFW. Strikes exactly the right balance of fucked up and feelsy, and fits really well into the dynamic they have pre-canon.

Kurthnaga stares at the woman before him as she offers him the juice box, crimson eyes piercing through her. Her name is Camilla... if he remembers correctly. There is something that seems deeply familiar about her to him, something that he has felt before in happier times.

He takes her offering gently, head still spinning from the battle he had just faced. He was lucky enough that there hadn't been any blood spilled, but it was certainly more than enough to make him at least a little dizzy.

"Ah, thank you, Lady Camilla. I fear that I am as useless in battle as ever, perhaps that is what I get for being scared of it, haha. At least being eliminated means I won't have to bear anymore! I can just watch over my students from now on in safety." He sips softly on his juice, continuing to stare at the princess. And then it hits him. What she reminds him of. His beloved older sister. Almedha, how dearly he missed her, how much he wished that she could be here beside him now and be the one offering him this juice and telling him that he had done his best.

"You know... you remind me a little bit of my elder sister. You two may have gotten along. She is a very kind soul, like yourself. Oh! Apologies if that was weird to say though. I certainly only meant it in the best way possible."
