#11 – 'Godzukie' (A Sun Came, 1998)

Now here’s an adorable one.

‘Godzukie’ is apparently a recording of the Stevens siblings made by their stepfather Lowell Brahms in 1981, when Sufjan was just six. Despite their tumultuous upbringing – the moving of cities, the changing of schools, and the fluctuating presence of his biological mother – the siblings seemingly remained close, and they had their very own indecipherable set of inside jokes (as any person with close siblings would relate to.) For whatever reason, those inside jokes made it on to A Sun Came.

I’m glad they did, because of all the album’s interludes, this is the most endearing. The siblings adopt dense Southern accents and play-act a stilted conversation between an attractive woman and her potential suitors. Their names are mostly indecipherable, and in the brains of the pre-teen Stevens troupe, this is where the humour is derived from. It’s hard to tell whose voice belongs to whom, except to say that the titular ‘Godzukie’ character is probably Marzuki, Sufjan’s brother (who would later go on to be a very talented long-distance runner.)
