thinking of a scenario where when charles was little, his mum used to take care of his injuries and do the kissing-it-better thing, until he got older and his dad got wise to that and she couldn’t anymore. but it’s just something tiny that charles associates with comfort.
and so the first time, early on in the agency, that edwin gets badly hurt on a case and charles is patching him up, he leans in and presses a little kiss to the mostly-bandaged spot. it’s just the whole case gave him a scare, because he hadn’t seen edwin hurt bad before, and he’s just getting used to the fact that edwin’s his person, his to keep safe and he didn’t manage that this time, and in his distress he doesn’t even think twice.
edwin stiffens, and charles realizes he just kissed his best mate’s arm, and that’s not the sort of thing you do, is it, and maybe that’s really the sort of thing that’s going to get him knocked in the jaw. only edwin is just looking at him with curiosity, and edwin isn’t the sort of bloke who knocks people in the jaw but he is the type who could leave, could leave charles behind and... and now charles’s face is burning.
“sorry,” he chokes out, finishing the bandage hurriedly. “um, it’s just—something my mum used to do, y’know, kissing it better. when… um. when i’d get hurt as a kid, yeah? used to make me feel proper better, more than the plasters and all that. i know it’s silly, i didn’t think—”
“i did not mind it,” says edwin—who had never had any injury of his kissed better in his short life, and certainly not any of the damage he sustained over 73 years in hell.
“oh,” says charles. “that’s good, then.”
the next time edwin’s hurt it’s a significantly smaller injury, a really minor iron burn that’s already starting to look better even as charles applies the salve. he bandages it up anyway, though. but he’s surprised when edwin stays where he is once charles is done, still expectantly holding out his injured hand, not pulling away, as he usually does. and then he realizes that edwin is waiting for charles to kiss it better. and so he does—hesitant the whole time, in case he read edwin all wrong, up until edwin finally pulls his hand back seeming satisfied somehow, like charles has fulfilled some unspoken half of a bargain.
and that was twenty-some years ago. by now it’s just ingrained that every time charles tends to an injury of edwin’s, even one as minor as a paper cut from a page in edwin’s notebook, he kisses it better. edwin won’t move away until he does.
after edwin’s confession, things change. charles starts to notice that he feels a bit fluttery, the first time after hell that he leans in to press his lips to edwin’s scraped shoulder through a layer of bandage and the fabric of his shirt. and he tries to think nothing of it, only that then his mouth doesn’t connect with anything; because edwin has moved away, moved out of his reach, neatly risen out of the way of charles’s kiss so that he hovers, lips parted against empty air, feeling off-kilter and confused, something like hurt churning through him.
edwin had said he wanted nothing to change between them, and here edwin goes changing things himself. of course that hurts. but why does it hurt so much? and what was that fluttery feeling? and why can’t charles stop thinking about it?

Actually going insane over the implications of Jason asking Dick to be the Robin to his Batman in Battle for the Cowl.
Like I initially took it at the purely surface-level of Jason wanting a partner in the general sense. Which made sense, it's a huge responsibility and a lonely one so an assistant/sidekick/partner seems a no-brainer if you can get one.
But then I really thought about it, because Jason is not asking Dick to be his partner in the general sense; he's not even asking Dick to be his Nightwing. He's asking Dick to be his Robin.
And they both know exactly what Jason means: "Be the light to my darkness. Be the smile to my scowl. Be the hope to my fear. "
He's saying "Be 'Robin'; be the embodiment of Love and Justice and Goodness. Be the exceptional person that you have always been. Be the slightly-less exceptional person that I was when I wore your colors. Be the person that I was in the process of becoming and might have been (or might still be), if only Joker hadn't clipped my wings."
He's saying "I am prepared to become vengeance, become the Night. And I will go further than Bruce ever dared to, because it is what is needed. I will be the necessary evil. But you don't have to be. If Batman is Gotham's curse, Robin has always been its blessing. I will be the brutal punishment to our world, and I am asking you to be its incandescent gift."
He's saying, "Be for me, what we were for Him. Be my anchor, my comfort, my hope. Remind me what it's all for, why it's all worth it. And remind yourself as well."
He's saying "Be 'Robin' again--for both of our sakes."
#dick grayson#jason todd#battle for the cowl#jaydick#dickjay#kinda but also not kinda#batman#dcu#otp: be my robin#'we can rule together as just it always should've been with you as my guiding light and conscience'#is that not in essence; a sort of marriage proposal ?#well no but it's not NOT one either if you catch my drift#i should note that i haven't actually read bftc yet and i know it's considered controversial/bad#and considered ooc for pretty much everyone#so i am not even sure if I will like it#but i am still planning on reading it for the jaydick crumbs#and b/c i am using it and knightfall as the primary inspo for my krisnix au#apparently jason does ask tim to be his robin first and that's interesting as well#but honestly a little less powerful/interesting to me at least since jaytim just doesn't interest me as much as jaydick#and honestly i've looked at the panels and it seems a little more genuine when jason asks dick idk#more like 'last chance; i'll let you live if you join me' for tim vs. 'join me because this feels right' for dick#and honestly even with clumsy execution; just the narrative and emotional richness of this scene is still making me absolutely feral#this arc could be complete trash in any and every other way but if it gives me THEMES; i will forgive anything#it's the former english major occupational hazard#*apollo justice voice *: I'M FINE#(narrator voice: she was not in fact fine)

This has probably been talked about before, but I love how Cold doesn't represent logic.
Normally, when you see a cold, uncaring sort of character in media, someone who just doesn't care, they're associated with logic or power. The stoic detective, the ice queen, the snarky assistant, you know the deal.
But not The Voice of the Cold. You want a logical character? That's Skeptic! But Skeptic isn't cold by any means: he's, well, skeptical, of the things that people tell him. He has the goal of finding out as much information as possible about this situation, and getting out of the hostage situation the Narrator has set up. He's not super expressive or anything, but he's actually pretty approachable/friendly with anyone not named 'The 'Narrator'.
And it makes sense. Skeptic is the voice you get by taking the most logical course of action. Take the blade just in case, but hear the Princess out and ultimately realize she's as much of a victim in this as you are before freeing her, and doubling down when the Narrator tries to control you.
Cold, on the other hand, is about apathy. The closest things to a 'goal' he has are:
1. Don't be bored.
2. Get revenge on the Narrator somehow.
And so, he really can't be logical, at least, not 'logical' in the way we perceive it. Our goal is to get out as unharmed as possible, and many of his suggestions directly contradict this goal.
But the Cold doesn't care about death. After all, it's already been established it's already temporary. His sheer apathy towards any and all harm that comes towards him fundamentally contradicts conventional logic, because conventional logic dictates taking the course of action that minimizes harm.
Now, that's not to say Cold doesn't care about anything. In his own way, he genuinely is trying to look out for the other voices when he urges them to numb themselves to pain, because it's easier that way, isn't it? He's clearly frustrated when they can't do that, urging the Player to just ignore them and listen to him instead during Moment of Clarity.
But at the same time, because of Cold's apathy, his typical 'logic' is just "whatever seems interesting". He's fundamentally a very impulsive character, not in spite of his apathy, but because of it.
Honestly... It's more like Contrarian than anything. I mean, think about it. An impulsive character who does whatever seems interesting and strives to make the Narrator as miserable as they can? The difference is in how that apathy presents itself, which makes sense, because they pretty much manifested in opposite ways.
That aside, though... The Cold acts based on a bestie to feel. Specifically, a desire to feel entertained. And, it makes sense, considering he's what you get from killing yourself due to agonizing numbness and boredom. Of course he's going to be apathetic, uncaring of his wellbeing, and impulsive. That's what you manifested.
Apathy, taken to its logical conclusion, is very impulsive. And I love just how well Cold represents that.
#stp cold#stp skeptic#stp contrarian#there were a lot of tangents that i wanted to go on but ultimately couldn't because i couldn't logically tie them back to my point#godd the cold contrarian parallels#and even the cold-prisoner parallels#or just how directly the voices reflect your actions#(ie contrarian being much more kind when you get him through trying to snark the narrator vs traumatizing the adversary for the heck of it)#i must yap about the little disembodied voices#voice of the cold#slay the princess

FAMINE: That's one deep, dark nothing you've got there, Dean.
[youtube with closed captions]
dean and his father. dean and his family. dean and how bad it is.
(via @closetoyou1970)
#spn#vid#mind the warnings on this one for real#woe! fruit of my rewatch be upon ye.#pallas calls this my 'deangirl coming out vid' which honestly. true. but those who paid attention know i've always been a deangirl.#also. after this no more deanwinchester rilo kiley amvs I Pwomise#anyway. i'm not gonna give a full commentary here but a big reason why i chose this song is that the narrator#is essentially dismissing her own problems and instead watching the problems of someone else#and i kind of wanted to play with that theme. this is the parallels show so let's do some parallels. lots of things happen to characters#that are Like Dean somehow. either in personality or circumstance. that we know or can infer happen to him. but we don't see it bc it's#not sayable. not speakable. so like for an easy one. we see meg being tortured in caged heat. she also talks about apprenticing under#alastair just like dean. so i show her being tortured [in a way that is sexualized and demon-specific] and reacting how she does#because i invite the audience to imagine or interpret that this has also happened to dean at some point. we just don't see it#so there are many dean parallels in this video. some obvious. some subtle but textual. some products of my twisted mind. but that's the way#i am using them to make my argument.#oh also: dean voice sam's eyes going black is JUST like when he used to fight with dad and wouldn't listen to me when i told him not to.#i guess also the point is that because it's unsayable. dean can't say it. dean can't even acknowledge it. and so it bleeds through#into everything in his life#that's why it's important that the song narrator doesn't take her own problems seriously. dean doesn't either.

Do you ever think about how horrible of a title "Batman's Greatest Failure" is? How degrading and dehumanising? Everything you achieved in life is forgotten and reduced to the way it ended.
You aren't a person. You are a failure. Your whole life is pushed aside and made a part of someone else's life story. You never mattered, if it weren't for that person you would have meant nothing at all.
Aren't you glad? Aren't you glad you are remembered as something? Even if that something is just saying your whole existence equals just to a mistake in someone's life? An old page that everyone is so desperate to forget. A lapse in judgement. A regret. The people you saved, the people you loved, what you did in life, none of that matters. All that matters is how another person was affected by your death. That is all you will ever be. Everything you did and didn't do will always be irrevocably tied to that person, for better or worse.
You are unable to exist without that person and the only way for you to exist is through his perception of you. The only way for others to see you is to look at you through his biased interpretations of who you were.
You weren't a child or a hero or a martyr or a son or a victim. All you ever were, and will be, is someone's "Greatest Failure".
#can you tell im having Thoughts about jason again#it just came to me all of a sudden#your entire existence is described as another person's greates failure#you don't have a voice in how he tells your story#you can not correct him because yiu are dead. and even after you arent#he will never listen to you#you cant control your own story#your narrative is puppeteered by a narrator who paints you as a mistake#who HAS to paint you as a mistake because otherwise he would have to answer questions that he cannot answer lest they break him#works both in and out of universe#bruce lied abt him bc he would break otherwise#and dc lied bc otherwise ppls would start questioning batman mythos#jason todd#red hood#aditf#robin#robin jason#character meta#meta#jason todd meta#batman#batman comics

You know how you can get the "you're special" conversation with the Narrator in the various Chapter IIs? Well, I got very curious about everyone's responses to that, and some of these are very interesting...
At its base, the conversation goes like this:
And then whatever other voice you have with you chimes in after that. There are a few exceptions that I'll cover because I find them interesting, but the ones that follow this pattern are:
Broken
Cheated
Hunted
Opportunist
Skeptic
Smitten
(Some of the above have further back-and-forth with the Narrator, but that's a bit outside the point of this post!)
There are a few variations that really intrigue me, though...
One just changes up the order slightly, nothing else, but I think even this simple change still has some character implication to it:
Stubborn
Which makes Stubborn, interestingly, one of the only ones who buys into that as easily as Hero, possibly the only one (but, funnily enough, possibly not...).
On the other hand, changing up the formula drastically:
Paranoid
Paranoid doesn't even let Hero respond before responding himself, and I only showed the rest of the conversation to show that the Narrator has no chance at all to deliver his "Of course you're special. Why else would you be here?" lines -- he's put on the back foot by Paranoid's suspicions, and even when he tries to be soothing and encouraging again, Paranoid shuts that down too. If Stubborn is the most receptive, Paranoid may very well be the least.
Another major variation, which I find very interesting and can't even quite put my finger on why I find it so interesting (except that I like Cold so much):
Cold
Like Stubborn, Cold speaks up right after Hero's response before the Narrator can get into his own "Of course you're special" lines, and like Stubborn, it's in a way that seems surprisingly receptive. He actually takes the place of the Narrator responding with that, actually -- the Narrator doesn't say those lines at all, making this the only other time other than with Paranoid that he doesn't.
And the final variation...
Contrarian
There are no screencaps for this. Because interestingly, I don't think you even can get this sequence with Contrarian. Or if you can, I wasn't able to figure out how. You can't get to any of that questioning at all from what I'm able to tell.
And I think Contrarian would enjoy knowing that he's the most uniquely disruptive out of all of them.
#i put the variations under a cut because the post was already long#it's over twice as long with the cut included#slay the princess#slay the princess spoilers#the voices#the narrator#voice of the hero#voice of the broken#voice of the cheated#voice of the opportunist#voice of the skeptic#voice of the smitten#voice of the stubborn#voice of the paranoid#voice of the cold#voice of the contrarian#i admit i looked all of this up for praise kink purposes#and i find it very funny that the three who seem potentially the most susceptible to praise are hero stubborn and cold of all people#long post#you're special

I like to imagine that all of the Voices are spoken aloud through LQ, so the Princess just watches this guy cycle through various different speech patterns as he has full-on conversations with himself. And she just politely ignores everything said until it's spoken in LQ's actual voice (the player's choices).
#That one route where she can “hear” the internal dialogue is just her deciding it'd be funnier to finally acknowledge it.#The Narrator doesn't know though because he - just like the player - experiences the construct through LQ's eyes/perspective //#// thus he assumes that the Voices are in LQ's head alongside him.#slay the princess

Slay The Princess Roles Reversal Idea
Ok, it seems like my stupid ideas for this STP brainrot of mine actually keep getting popular for some reason so here we go.
Imagine this: It's at the end of the road, you're in the Stranger's cabin at the heart of the Shifting Mound, pristine blade in hand. At this point, you've become aware that there is no good ending. You steel your nerve and prepare to plunge the weapon into her heart for the final time ...But you never get to make it that far.
Voice of the Contrarian: ...I'm sorry. I can't let you do this.
Chains are wrapping around you. You can feel yourself shattering, fragments of yourself unravelling from your essence in a sensation that feels completely foreign and yet all too familiar. Everything goes dark, and you forget yourself.
Someone wakes up in a locked cabin, at the top of the stairs. It's not you. Instead, it is a beautiful maiden, tasked with slaying the beast in the basement. If she doesn't, then she will die. Or at least, that is what the Shadow keeps telling her.
I like to think that Contrarian would actually be quite convincing in this role. He is, after all, doing this for the Princess' own good. Moreover, he will be right. If she doesn't you, you will kill her. Very, very few routes end up with both of you surviving. And even those routes need at least one of you to die first.
I haven't really thought this through very well on how it would actually work, but it would be super interesting.
#slay the princess#slay the princess au#oh and probably#slay the princess spoilers#since I mentioned some of the ending stuff#voice of the contrarian#the long quiet#the shifting mound#the princess stp#contrarian would NOT realise he's acting like the Narrator#and would probably not get called out because you and the princess fogor#but any multiverse shenanigans would be really funny#because it is so obvious but he'd be too wrapped up in his refusal to let the Narrator have his way to realise#that he's doing the exact same thing to LQ that Narry did to SM

Batman: The Audio Adventures is about two things: goofy-ass worldbuilding and villain monologues. That's it, that's the podcast. Funny Gotham public service announcement, followed by a rogue giving a gay little speech while they literally torture somebody to death, rinse and repeat. And it's awesome.
#i actually love their joker which is fun because i feel like he's so hard to get right#but when he like. calls in to a radio show. and tells some jokes with the host and they just kinda vibe for a bit#and then he starts talking about the guy's real name and home address and his pets#and you realize that he's currently calling from inside the man's apartment#so excellent#oh i forgot a very important part of the show's formula#which is the narrator making an overly alliterative metaphor and saying the words 'Gotham City' in his dramatic tone of voice#'another tale of life and death in gotham city' is seared into my brain and tbh I ain't mad#i wish the show was more popular 😭😭😭😭#i feel like so many people are missing out#batman the audio adventures#btaa#batman#batfam#dc#my rambles
