[A/N] hi everyone! This is a short drabble I wrote as requested by annonie. I enjoy reading these AUs but I myself am not a very maternal person so it was quite difficult to make this as genuine and authentic as possible. I hope you like ☺️
They say motherhood is the most most beautiful moment in a woman’s life. No one can possibly begin to understand the jumble of emotions a mother experiences when she has her first child, her second and even perhaps her third. A package of emotions exclusive to those who have nurtured and nursed a baby from the months leading to its birth into the world. Though parenthood is in no way easy, it’s been an amazing journey for you, from the very moment you’d learned of your pregnancy to the very first contraction.
And you’d come to find that it really is true what they say; it takes a village to raise a child. But to raise twins? It takes the whole world.
It’s an endless cycle – picking up toys, washing twice as much laundry, nursing bruised knees and runny noses – but you wouldn’t have it any other way. And neither would Jungkook.
For the last four years your lives had been solely dedicated on raising the two bundles of joy you’d been blessed with and it had been a wild ride from the very start. Your mother hadn’t been too pleased with the news at first, claiming it was too early for you to even think about children, but you felt ready. Jungkook was also ready, but would support you in whatever decision you should make.
But you were adamant with your decision, never letting the thoughts or opinions of anyone else sway you. Needless to say, your mother was even less pleased when she discovered you were having not just one, but two kids. At this point, her input and opinions were irrelevant, but it wasn’t easy without her complete support.
Jungkook’s family on the other hand, they were ecstatic. Two baby showers were thrown and everyone had turned up at the hospital to see the newborn kids. Your mother eventually gave in and reluctantly came to visit also, though her eyes completely changed and softened upon seeing her first grandchildren.
You blink at the ceiling, listening to Jungkook’s steady breathing as the early morning sunlight filters through the blinds. The baby monitor is silent and you silently thank the heavens for the peaceful night you’ve had. You take a minute to observe this strange limbo in time, the shift between dawn and morning, the gradual change from the inky night sky to greys and pinks.
Jungkook shifts beside you and throws an arm over your stomach, burying his head into your pillow. He mutters incoherently in his sleep and sighs deeply, settling closer to you. The citrus of his shampoo and the floral scent of his deodorant wafts in as he moves and you take a further moment to close your eyes and savour the moment. It’s rare you ever get to sleep through the night, let alone sleep-in.
Something sounds through the monitor and without listening for further confirmation, you know the twins are already up. So much for the sleep-in. The room is suddenly filled with chiming giggles and the clattering of toys but you know it’ll only keep them occupied for so long. You reach over and turn the baby monitor off, confident that you’ll soon hear the little pattering of footsteps down the hall, racing towards your room.
Jungkook groans as he buries his head further into you, chasing the last few remnants of sleep. “You would’ve thought I’d get used to these early starts by now.” He murmurs against your neck.
You hum in agreement and lean into his embrace. “Yeah, sometimes I feel like I’m taking care of three kids, not two.”
“Funny,” Jungkook deadpans, pulling you closer. “It’s your turn to take them to softplay today.”
“My turn? Why can’t we both go?” You whinge, not looking forward to the prospect of dragging two under-5’s to the other side of town in the freezing cold of winter.
“I have to work from home today,” and you don’t miss the evident disappointment in his voice at having to miss out. “I’ll take them next week.”
The clattering soon turns to crashing and a loud wail sounds from the next room. You sigh and begin to push Jingkook’s sleepy frame off but he gets up first, hushing you back to bed and carding a hand through his hair. “I’ll go.”
You’ve been trying to get a moment with him all day, but the twins have been demanding yours and his attention all day. It’s a rainy weekend and thus you’d all been forced to stay indoors, thinking up ideas to keep them busy, but most importantly, entertained.
You weren’t sure how he would take it but you needed to get it off your chest, voice your desires and worries aloud.
You lean on the kitchen counter, nursing a warm cup of tea as you watch Jungkook attempt to shift the sleeping kids off his lap. He lowers the tv volume and sidles up beside you.
“God, I’m starved,” he rummages through the cupboards and pulls out a bag of kiddie snacks.
“Stop eating the kids’ food,” you snatch the bag away and toss it back into pantry. He pouts, every so sweetly, but it isn’t enough to change your mind. “There’s plenty of food in the fridge.”
He settles back beside you after finding something else to eat and the two of you bask in the silence, enjoying the afternoon serenity. You take this as your moment to dive in, dismissing the nervous voice in the back of your head.
“Jungkook,” you start, and he looks up, his mouth full of food. His eyes look reassuring already, silently inviting you to voice whatever it is troubling you. And you kick yourself for being so nervous because this was Jungkook, your one and only childhood sweetheart, your first kiss, your first love, your husband and the father of your two beautiful children. You’d already bared your soul to him, letting him read you like an open book. He knows everything there is to know about you, your deepest, darkest desires and your hidden fears.
He knows just how you like your coffee and every little strange habit that you posses. He knows your body like the back of his own hand, from the very top of your head to each little toe.
But the nerves still consume you because the thing you want has never been truly discussed and although Jungkook is perfectly happy with the family he has now, you can only dream of more.
“I want another baby.” The words are out before you know it, growing and expanding in the otherwise quiet room. They hang in the air above your heads and a long pause follows, Jungkook concentrating on shovelling his food.
You’re afraid that you may not have spoken loud enough, that you’d only conjured up the words in your head, but he clears his throat and nods while assessing your statement. “Another kid?”
You nod and place the mug behind you on the counter, wringing your hands together. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently and... I feel like now is the best time. I feel ready.”
Jungkook’s tongue traces the inside of his cheek as he listens, his face a complete blank slate. He finally glances up at you, his kind eyes twinkling in the fluorescent light overhead. “I... I don’t think now is a good idea–”
And there’s no amount of words that can describe the levels of disappointment that resound in your heart. A torrent of emotions cyclone in your stomach, twisting and turning knots. “Jungkook–”
“It’s not to say I don’t want more kids,” he rushes to clarify, afraid of getting the wrong point across. “I just– we already have a lot on our plate, baby. I don’t want to rush into things. We have the whole of our lives ahead of us, we have so much time. Not to mention the complications you had–” he almost chokes up at the thought, preferring not to remember your most difficult term of the pregnancy.
“I don’t care,” you grab his hand and squeeze, searching his eyes. “I don’t care. I’d do it all again. For them, for the next baby. The reward, their life, far outweighs any struggle that I have to suffer. Please just... think about it? For me?”
He sighs and nods once he’s seen that you’re not budging on your stance. He stands to his full height and places his hand at the back of your head, gently pulling you closer and planting a kiss on your forehead. “Anything for you.”
Weeks pass and Jungkook begins to understand your wish a little better. He feels bad, not because he doesn’t want it to happen, but because he couldn’t give you a definite answer. But he mulls over it, considering the pros and the cons and finds that you’re absolutely right, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
He pulls you aside one evening, suggesting you spend the evening cosying up in bed for the night, a frequent alternative to the sitting room. You think nothing of it, thinking Jungkook just wants a bit more attention than usual. It’s not until your tucked up in the sheets, your head on his chest, drifting off to sleep and your legs intertwined that he blurts out the thing he’s been holding back all day.
“I’ve been thinking, um, about that thing you were talking about,” he rushes quietly. “And, uh, I– well I want another kid too. I guess. I mean, I don’t guess, I know. I just–” he stops short when he realises you’ve fallen asleep, your cheek squashed up against his chest, your rib cage rising and falling with each deep breath. But you haven’t quite succumbed to the depths of sleep just yet.
“Stop talking,” you murmur into his T-shirt.
“But– did you hear what I said?”
“Mmhm,” you try to nod as best as you can without disturbing the position you’ve curled yourself into. “We’ll try tomorrow. I’m too tired.”
“Try?”
“The baby won’t make itself, will it?” You quip, all traces of sleep gone.
“Oh. But, I didn’t mean– but– the kids–”
“–start school tomorrow. So we’ll have the whole day. Just me and you.” You smile a little against his chest and eventually fall back to sleep to the rhythm of his heart.
Jungkook watches you sleep for a while, your features relaxed into an angelic expression, while simultaneously listening out for any midnight cries. His lips twitch into an endearing smile as he caresses the hair away from your face and plants a goodnight kiss on your forehead. And it’s not long until he drifts off too, into a calm and peaceful slumber.
