instagram headcanons
kairi is the instagram queen in general, takes phenomenal aesthetic and ootd photos as well as a lot of cute selfies with her friends and pics of food she makes or orders (if it’s really interesting), and pics of her drawings or crafts
Sora only takes selfies, always with a big doofy grin or a kissy face if they’re either for or with kairi or riku
riku mostly takes travel photos and candid pics of his friends n partners especially when they aren’t looking, overuses hashtags (to make up for never using his instagram)
roxas uses too many filters and takes equal parts hazy sunset filtered pics with his friends and edgy grunge aesthetic pics of himself, his shoes, graffiti, weeds in the sidewalk, etc etc
Xion takes pictures of anything that reminds her of good memories, souvenirs and trinkets etc, pics of her friends. also cute outfits but not herself wearing them, just spread out on her bed. doesn’t like to be in pictures much so she doesn’t ever take selfies.
axel is terrible at instagram but always posts great selfies when his makeup is especially good and sometimes also selfies of himself making dumb faces with his friends
namine ONLY ever posts pictures of her art. doesn’t even regram the rare selfie someone else posts with her
Aqua uses hers as a scrapbook like xion does with a lot of pictures of Ven and terra, as well as pictures of things cleaned and organized nicely
terra doesn’t have an Instagram
Ven takes pictures of EVERYTHING, writes long excitable captions with lots of emojis, uses hashtags correctly but as many as possible, posts at least four times a day

Why I Love Anson Jones House: The changing face of Sherbourne Street
The affluent and sketchy history of Sherbourne St.
Sherbourne Street is undergoing a metamorphosis and one only needs to look at the rising tower behind the historic Gooderham Mansion and the James Cooper Mansion. The street was once home to an upscale neighbourhood, but fell into despair with many mansions being abandoned and a rise in prostitution and drug dealings, which attracted the homeless. For more on the history of Sherbourne Street, read my post on the Gooderham Mansion.
While the street has a number of major developments occurring, there are still pockets yet to be developed. One development that has been in limbo for years is the Anson Jones House, which sits on the corner of Sherbourne and Howard. In December 2016, The Globe and Mail reported the rebirth on Howard Street, which has been subject to pending gentrification since 2010. The rebirth is happening east of Sherbourne Street, but there are promises it will extend west to the Anson Jones House.
Until then, all we can do is use our imagination to envision the beauty it once had.
A home time has yet to fully destroy
The heritage home was built for Anson Jones, a ledger keeper for the Quebec Bank (Royal Bank of Canada), whose family lived in the dwelling until 1930. It was built by famed architect Edmund Burke (Hudson’s Bay/ Robert Simpson Store, Casa Loma) in 1895 during a time when he was working alone. The home was designed in a Queen Anne Revival style, which many historians say Burke introduced to the city. What is even more brilliant is the original drawing below by Burke of the house found in the Toronto Archives.
The illustration shows the true beauty of this heritage home, which now is in despair and covered with graffiti, posters and broken windows. Like all of Burke’s work, the house was an architectural wonder on a smaller scale than he is used to building. Notable elements of the home include:
The red brick and stone cladding, with brick, stone and wood trim
The cross-gable roof with chimneys and hipped dormers
The placement and detailing of the main entrance on the south façade on Howard Street
The decorative brickwork and stonework on the west elevation facing Sherbourne Street
Sunporches with decorative shingles
Terra Cotta trim
According to an ERA Architect report the home has “minimal damage to the existing heritage fabric of the house” with “many historic decorative elements and finishes remaining.” Apparently, recent interior photos illustrate cabinetwork in the Great Room, a grand honey-coloured staircase and a tiled fireplace in a condition rare with many of these abandoned homes.
While the home is still boarded up, locked and monitored, one can only hope the Howard Street restoration/ development project extends west. The home is bound to be restored, with the ongoing development in the area, but the question is when?

Aydan considered his friend, “All right, well ma’am, what you’ve failed to understand is that you need to know the people on the other side of the table before you start to negotiate and threaten them; and by ‘knowing’ I don’t mean just their names and relatives and shit like that, I mean knowing the sort of person you’re going to be trying to take by the short and curlies.
I don’t know what to say to ya, lady, I mean, it seems like a pretty basic blunder on your part no expect that someone, sooner or later, wasn’t going to be the sort of asshole that would bash an old crone in the beezer.”
“You should see your fucking face right now.” Weebs smiled down at her.
“Look…” The Queen began to address Weebs.
“Shut up.” Weebs just said, rude, like that.
“Wut?” The Queen asked.
“Sh-Shut up.” Again, Weebs stepped on the woman’s words.
“All right man, c’mon, we have stuff to do here.” Aydan, despite himself.
Weebs took a step back, smiled at his friend. “Sorry, she was just being such a dick to me, Aydan.”
“Yeah, I saw that. Cant’ believe you didn’t do it sooner, I almost did a few times,” Aydan returned his focus to the queen. “Now, your highness, I’m going to offer you a deal, and it’s up to you how things play out from there.”
Weebs pulled back a fist, and inhaled audibly through an ‘o’ that his lips made.
“Now, one punch from Weebs there should suffice to send you into the next life, but you don’t want that, and neither do I. So, instead, the two of us are going to load you on the train and send you on your way. We’ll never speak a word of this to anyone, and you can either choose to believe me on that one or not. We don’t need to make things nasty, we’re all adults. You can even call that the favor you owe me for letting you go.”
The Queen, realizing the dire straits she was in, for as much as she acted the part of someone that could eat some solid abuse the plain truth was that she couldn’t. Once, she’d caught a hand in spoke of her wheel and it went almost a full rotation before her significantly damaged hand would prove a sufficient enough hindrance, woven into the spokes as it was, to jam the wheel entirely. It had taken four and a half years of recovery for her to get back to where she’d been before the injury. Absent-mindedly, she clenched her fist, the same one, and felt how brittle.
The Queen looked at the fist of Weebs', then at Aydan, “You are truly a wicked person aren’t you.” It wasn’t a question, and she’d smiled when she hadn’t asked it, but the queen let the two guys load her up on the train. They brought her up front into the main engine and secured her there, so she wouldn’t roll around. Satisfied, Aydan looked to the engineer “Mr Sulu, engage.”
“Sulu wasn’t the navigator, “ the engineer shot back as though he’d heard this sort of shit for the last time.
Weebs struck a straight blow across the jaw of the man from beside him, put him down and out. Without breaking pace he turned to the only other person in the train engine compartment, this dude who’d just been shoveling coal in the background there, and tried to keep the energy up, “My friend said ‘Engage, Cthuluhu’!”
That guy didn’t need to be told twice.
As the train began to roll, the pair of great pals dropped back to terra firma. “Let’s go get my buddy,” Aydan said. “Keep and eye on the Grafiti Kids though.” That was just good advice.
“Naw, we don’t have anything to fear here. Fat junkies are harmless.” Weebs had sussed this out prior to emerging from the linens; had, in fact, let this inform much of his behavior on the platform.
As Weebs spoke the words, Aydan saw that it was so. Everywhere, the Grafitti Kids, junkies all, laze about in dazes. Some were painting, sort of, autonomically as though victims of their more artisanal qualities. “They’re just lazing about,” Aydan was in disbelief "like cats in sunbeams."
“It’s cuz they’re well fed, and they have lots of drugs. They don’t need anything else.” Weebs was surveying the scene, “It’s all they’ve ever wanted or needed, legalized drugs. I bet there isn’t any crime at all in this world; I mean, except for drug dealing and vandalism.” Weebs could see that he’d sullied paradise, these planes were never meant for men like him.
Aydan looked up and down the train platform, “Wonder where they have ‘im stashed,” all he saw were Graffiti kids sitting about, some were looking their way, but none seemed inclined to do anything..like, at all.
“How big a lead did you say your buddy Kev had on you?” Weebs asked.
“I didn’t say, but My Buddy Kev had maybe a day on me.” Then, wondering why his friend Weebs would be thinking that, Aydan asked “Why?”
“Well, that could be him in there.” Weebs pointed to the far end of the platform.
Aydan turned in the direction indicated and saw there, what appeared to be, a mail bag. “That’s a mail bag, man.”
Weebs was already walking, taking up the canvas sack he set to untying the rope fastened there, he wasn’t too far along on the task when, forced from the inside, fingers! Fingers! thrust up and out, seeking purchase on Weebs’ throat, who leaned back to avoid them and was successful for the most part, though he had trouble hanging onto the bag when the arms and then arms of a man started to follow the path set by the maniac hands. On the verge of being overwhelmed, Weebs gave a half chuckle then set to shoving the whole mess back into the canvas bag and retied the rope with much effort spent. Bent over, panting, Weebs then straightened and, setting his hands on either side of his belly, gave one of those great big jolly laughs that only Santa’s in black and white cartoons made in the thirties can laugh.
“Holy shit, that scared me!” Weebs practically yelled, and laughed some more.
Aydan, shook his head, then addressed the canvas bag “Um, hey fuckhead, it’s a canvas fucking bag, so there was no way you thought that was the queen or one of her stupid fat junkies…” there was more but Aydan was interrupted.
A plaintive, but indignant “Hey!” had risen into the air about the quiet train platform.
Weebs, already on guard, his gun in his hand, was tracking everyone on the platform. His eyes zeroed in, targeting the men, the women, the children; though nothing further came and none gave any indication of having been the originator of the cry so Weebs put his pistol back to bed still hungry.
“Thank you, Weebs,” Aydan went back to addressing the canvas mail duffle “As I was saying, you can clearly hear that we aren’t your enemies so how about you not trying to kill us for rescuing you?” Aydan took a step back, content to let Weebs finish what he’d started.
“Thank you, Aydan.” This time, the maniac hands were more like helping hands and slowly helped Weebs untie the rope.
An instant later, ‘My Buddy Kev’ stood on the platform; he wore only a pair of tan hip shorts with dual navy blue lines down the side, a chiseled though not bulky physique, and the same look in his eyes that mother’s get when their children touch ‘you know goddam well what you touched’.
Weebs wasn’t that impressed. Guy looked kind of dumb, to him.
“Aydan, shit, good t’see ya man. I was about to rip my way out, my dad used to have me tear out of canvas bags like that.” My Buddy Kev pointed to the bag at his feet "when I was little," he added boisterously.
Weebs gave a squint, as though to say “Wut?” That didn't sound right.
Then suddenly, My Buddy Kev was chewing really fast and hard, like he was eating something.
“Are you eating something Kev?” Weebs asked, then took a step back at the explosive response from this new person.
My Buddy Kev took a big step towards Weebs, one arm cocked as though to throw this plastic bottle of a vile looking dark liquid at him. “You don’t know him well enough to call him that yet, Weebs, call him My Buddy Kev, not Kev. Sorry about that, I should’ve warned about that one,” Aydan offered, thrust into the role of peacemaker.
Weebs, catching himself quick, was already moving to avoid the thrown bottle, should it come to that; he and My Buddy Kev froze there, like fighters posing at a pre-fight weigh in.
Those crazy eyes, “Ooook, I think I might like this guy, Aydan.” My Buddy Kev smiled then, regressed from Weebs a bit and went back to chewing really hard and fast; then he gobbed into the bottle in his hand. “Fuck is this place, man?” to Weebs who didn’t know what to make of suddenly being something of an underfoot character to this new man’s adventure.
“The home of the Graffiti Kids” Aydan said and kinda laughed, because the whole place was just a train platform and you have to get really far out of a city and stay there for a very very long time before someone bragging about a train platform as their base is gonna impress you all that much.
“What tha fuck are Graffiti Kids?” My Buddy Kev asked, and spit with his lips forced into the opening of the bottle, never losing eye contact with Aydan, like a maniac.
“Where did the bottle come from?” Weebs asked. It hadn’t made sense, it had just appeared and could have altered the course of the clash the two of them had almost had.
“Keistered it.” My Buddy Kev answered, eyes still on Aydan, as though he was the sort of person that just did stuff like that, had two conversations at once but only ever looked at one person while talking.
Weebs visibly winced, “And what is it you’re chewing there, bud?”
Another gob into the bottle, and some more intense chewing “Chew,” said My Buddy Kev.
“Yes, what is that you’re chewing?” Weebs asked again, this was all new to him.
“It’s called Chew, guy.”
“Wut?” Weebs didn’t like being called ‘Guy’ like that, it felt a lot like being called ‘Stupid’ for some reason Weebs didn’t quite understand, and that really annoyed him. “Like sunflower seeds.”
My Buddy Kev’s eyes, his lips back in that bottle of his, went, slowly, to Weebs, stopped there for a bit, then, slowly, went back to Aydan. The lips smiled then and My Buddy Kev said “If that works for you.” Then, to Aydan, his eye-brows went up.
This, as perfectly described, was all done in plain sight of Weebs whose eyebrows had risen very high on his forehead in disbelief.
Aydan? Loving it. “The Graffiti Kids, they’re the one’s that nabbed ya', they worked for some old queen that was gonna do ya in if’n the two of us goons here hadn’t stopped in to save the day.”
It was difficult to pinpoint, but there came a moment there, during Aydan’s explanation, when a light bulb, of some sort, had gone of inside the mind, or perhaps heart, no one knows, of My Buddy Kev. And just like that, there was the bluster of a breeze that kicked up and swirled across the train platform.
As quickly as the man had exploded out of the canvas sack the first time, My Buddy Kev had completely vanished from sight. The plastic bottle was still there though, standing where the man had been; it was in zero danger of being disturbed.
“He’s gone!” Weebs said, and as he spoke the words he realized that he found a true joy in the truth of them.
“Yeah, he’ll be back in a minute.”
“You know where he went?” Weebs asked his compadre.
Apologetically, “I do,” he gave a sort of shrug “My Buddy Kev is sort of stupid into army.”
Nodding in a way that he hope looked ‘knowingly’, Weebs nodded “I see.”
A scream shattered the quiet tableau, but was silenced. “Yeah,” Aydan continued “I think he thinks he was an army or something in a previous life, or, his dad was a tank or something. He told me about it once, but, I don’t know man, he’s just one of those dudes you go with while you can and hope to God you can keep on the good side of.”
“So, was he actually in the army?” Weebs asked.
“The KISS one.” Aydan slid in, he said the words because they were true.
Eyes squinted, Weebs was on the very verge of asking, but another cry hit the air, then a second; an explosion of voices pleas and things being knocked about, then more sudden quiet
“What is happening right now?” Weebs asked, things were going weird for him.
“Well, my guess? My Buddy Kev is hunting the Graffiti Kids into extinction.” Aydan gave his newly rediscovered old friend a look that said ‘what’re you gonna do’.
An eternity of overdubbed tinny sounding silence later, for that’s what silence sounds like when you can’t not listen to it because every so often you hear someone getting killed and then this rapist like silence forces you back into quiet again, My Buddy Kev reappeared out on the train platform next to his Aydan and Weebs; every part of him was red with vital fluids of more people than even he knew. Eyes and teeth floating in a crimson sea.
“We gotta go, the place is radioactive,” the guy was panting and, no shit of a lie, covered in blood in a way that one, one would think, one could only ever achieve by dunking oneself in in an oil drum filled with blood. My Buddy Kev was still dripping, a trail of bloody footprints a horrifying chronicle of the last twelve or so seconds, and glistened whilst he retrieved his bottle, then went back to chewing really hard and really fast. Nostrils flared, intense, the man reiterated "Raid-ee-oo-fuckin-active." He should his head slowly too, like someone had really crossed a line here.
That was all Weebs needed, he pulled the collar of his shirt up over his mouth and nose to dampen the radioactivity, held it there with his dominant left hand. His eyes, on the other hand, went wide looking at the complete horror show of My Buddy Kev that now stood before him.

Uno dei miei sogni è trasferirmi a vivere nella campagna inglese, o meglio, lo era fino a qualche tempo fa, ora, dopo aver visitato Bretagna e Normandia, la volontà è quella di trasferirmi in una città con affaccio sul mare, appunto della Francia del Nord.
D’ogni modo, la passione per la campagna inglese, è ancora ben radicata in me e quindi un po’ alla volta la sto visitando tutta, l’idea questa volta era di dedicarci al South England. Il tempo a nostra disposizione non era molto, sei giorni, pertanto impossibile fare tutto il sud dal Kent alla Cornivaglia e quindi ci siamo dedicati al sud-est con un assaggio di Somerset e Cotswold.
Ma veniamo a noi, atterriamo verso le 10.00 a Stansted, non è l’aeroporto più comodo ma diventava il più comodo per le nostre date, e ci rechiamo subito a ritirare la nostra auto a noleggio e qui viene il bello, ci siamo pentiti di non aver preso l‘auto con il cambio automatico, perché il problema maggiore non è guidare dal lato opposto, prendere le rotonde al contrario, eccetera, per questo basta a seguire le altre auto, il problema vero, per chi non è mancino, è cambiare con la sinistra.
Whistable – Kent (80 miglia da Stansted)
Per la prima notte ho prenotato alloggio a Dover, ma lungo il tragitto abbiamo qualche tappa da fare e la prima è stata Whistable, cittadina a 12 chilometri da Canterbury sulla costa sud-occidentale famosa per le ostriche. Noi da appassionati di ostriche non abbiamo potuto fare a meno di fare un aperitivo a base di ostriche e birra locale.
Dopo una passeggiata a piedi lungo le vie centrali disseminate da caratteristici negozietti e pub, abbiamo pranzato nel celebre The Old Neptune, un pub in Island Wall, la strada più vicina al mare dove abbiamo mangiato Fish and Chips, accompagnato da un’altra pinta di birra.
Da segnalare che Island Wall deve la sua celebrità ai numerosi edifici della metà del XIX secolo, costruiti con i proventi di un salvataggio in mare di una nave che trasportava dollari d’argento, tra i quali sembra anche il pub The Old Neptune. Da vedere in zona anche uno degli ultimi velieri per la pesca delle ostriche, il Favourite costruito nel 1824.
Dopo una visita alla spiaggia, ripartiamo.
Canterbury – Kent (7 miglia da Whistable)
Verso metà pomeriggio arriviamo a Canterbury, famosa per la sua Cattedrale, consigliabile la visita guidata, ma noi per questioni di tempo non riusciamo e, tra l’altro, il vero colpo di fortuna sarebbe assistere a una messa cantata in modo da poter sentire le voci del coro più prestigioso d’Inghilterra.
Canterbury è una vivace cittadina medievale, passeggiare tra i suoi viottoli acciottolati dove antiche dimore sembrano reggersi in piedi per miracolo, è un’esperienza da fare almeno una volta nella vita, come prendere il tè in uno dei tanti locali, e infatti noi qui ci siamo concessi il primo tea di questa visita in terra britannica.
Se avete tempo andate alla scoperta di Canterbury in un modo davvero unico, per meno di 10 GPB con i Canterbury Historic River Tours (da marzo a ottobre) è possibile visitare la cittadina attraverso i suoi canali, che scorrono placidi tra costruzioni antichissime, dimore Tudor e isolette su cui sorgono cappelle francescane del XIII secolo.
Dover – Kent (18 miglia da Canterbury)
Arriviamo a Dover che è buio, dopo aver trovato l’albergo e fatto il check-in, ci rechiamo in centro, dove non siamo riusciti a mangiare al pub, siamo andati al The White Horse, dopo le 20.00 non è più possibile. Cucina chiusa. Abbiamo provato in un altro pub, ma nulla. Si sa che a nord le cucine chiudono presto, ma qui troppo presto! Abbiamo dovuto mangiare una pizza in un ristorante italiano! Per noi un mezzo dramma e non perché la pizza fosse cattiva, anzi tutto sommato… solo che preferiamo mangiare tipico anche dove non c’è alta cucina.
La mattina seguente dopo la colazione ci dirigiamo subito alle bianche scogliere di Dover, The White Cliff, le formazioni di roccia calcarea a picco sul mare che si affacciano sulla Manica. Un tempo fortezza naturale che si ergeva massiccia contro i nemici della Corona, oggi crocevia di navi cariche di turisti e non solo.
Lo spettacolo è incredibile e la vista delle falesie vale la tappa a Dover. Visitarle è abbastanza semplice, si arriva a un parcheggio e poi da lì, attraversato il cancelletto di ingresso dove vi aspettano dei bellissimi cavalli lasciati in libertà, si prosegue con una passeggiata (di circa un’ora) che porta al vecchio Faro di Dover, South Foreland Lighthouse, lo spettacolo è incredibile nonostante la giornata grigia. Lungo il parco il tragitto è segnato dal passaggio dei pedoni, di tanto in tanto è possibile raggiungere l’estremità delle scogliere e, se non soffrite di vertigini, assistere allo spettacolo unico delle scogliere che si stagliano a picco sul mare. Mi raccomando mantenete una distanza di sicurezza!! Da questo punto si gode della vista sul porto e del via vai di navi provenienti dalla Francia.
The White Cliff Dover
Volevamo far visita al castello più grande d’Inghilterra, il Castello di Dover, appunto, una pantagruelica fortificazione risalente al tempo dei Romani, divenuto Castello nel Medioevo, pare. Noto anche per aver fatto da sfondo a alcune scene del film Amleto con Mel Gibson. Abbiamo lasciato stare perché c’era da attendere e il biglietto un po’ caro a nostro avviso, euro 22,00 p.p.

Sandwich – Kent (14 miglia da Dover)
Prima di proseguire il nostro viaggio e raggiungere il Sussex urge tornare un po’ indietro e andiamo a visitare Sandwich, esatto proprio come il panino che pare sia stato inventato qui. Non essendo riusciti il giorno prima non potevamo perderci questa incantevole località. Piccolo paesino medievale poco frequentato ma veramente carino e caratteristico, anche qui pub e molti negozietti tipici, in uno dei quali, una bottega francese, siamo entrati a fare uno spuntino perché davvero meritava per i prodotti che aveva.
Rye – East Sussex (50 miglia da Dover)
Lungo il tragitto che ci porterà a Brighton dove passeremo la notte, abbiamo un po’ di tappe da fare la prima è Rye, dove non mancano i turisti, ma è domenica mattina, in ogni caso è una delle cittadine più amate e visitate in Inghilterra.
Questa cittadina fortificata si erigine su una collina, un tempo circondata quasi interamente dal mare (ora è a circa 3 chilometri), è davvero pittoresca. Anche qui un’alta concentrazione di storia. Vicoli stretti acciotolati, antiche case a graticcio, edera tanta edera, non mancano interessanti botteghe, storici pub, tea room, locande, cafè, ristoranti uno più caratteristico dell’altro, in uno di questi ristorantini davvero vecchissimo Fletcher’s House, abbiamo consumato il pranzo domenicale.
Musicisti, artisti e celebrità hanno fatto di Rye la loro casa, un rifugio medievale, anche Re e Regine sembra abbiano soggiornato tra le mura degli antichi hotels del borgo, ma pure bande di criminali come la famigerata Hawkhurst gang, che grazie ai passaggi segreti, compivano traffici di contrabbando fra il 1735 e il 1749.
La cittadina vanta la chiesa e l’antica torre nella quale suona ancora una delle campane più antiche del mondo. Se volete passare la notte a Rye, una soluzione ottima per un soggiorno indimenticabile e con atmosfere d’epoca è The Mermaid Inn uno dei più antichi hotel.
Seven Sister – East Sussex (35 miglia da Rye)
Proseguiamo lungo la costa, che alterna falesie di calcare bianco a lunghe spiagge sabbiose, in direzione di altre bianche scogliere, quelle di Seven Sister (distretto di Eastbourne). Sono sette scogliere con affaccio sulla Manica, a mio avviso, molto più belle di quelle di Dover. Vestitevi a dovere, munitevi di pashmina attorno al collo perché il vento la fa da padrone ma il panorama è la fine del mondo. Alle scogliere si arriva con pochi minuti di passeggiata dal parcheggio. Adiacente al parcheggio c’è anche un ristorante dove fare ristoro con annesso un carinissimo shop di souvenir fatti a mano e sono anche molto belle le abitazioni nel parco che godono di un panorama mozzafiato, che fa venir voglia di trasferirsi.
Seven Sister dall’alto
Con una passeggiata si può raggiungere il faro a fasce bianche e rosse di Beachy Head e il rispettivo è il promontorio, il più alto del Regno Unito, che proprio per questa ragione è, purtroppo, tristemente famoso perché frequentato anche da persone che vogliono togliersi la vita, gettandosi in mare. L’altezza non lascia scampo. Ogni anno, un team specializzato che sorveglia la zona giorno e notte, sventa più di 300 suicidi. Forse questa è la ragione per cui sono vi sono numerose croci fissate al terreno.
Brighton – East Sussex (15 miglia da Seven Sister)
Arriviamo a Brighton verso le 17.30, giusto il tempo di trovare parcheggio in strada (dalle 18 del pomeriggio alle 9.00 del mattino il parcheggio non si paga) fortunatamente vicino all’albergo, ed entrare che inizia a piovere. Avevo prenotato da casa il Queen Hotel & Spa, sul lungomare con vista panoramica sul Canale della Manica e nel cuore dei Lanes, quindi comodo alla spiaggia ma anche ai locali, negozi e ristoranti.
Dopo una doccia e un po’ di relax, nel frattempo ha smesso di piovere, ma solo per il momento, usciamo alla scoperta della cittadina, decisamente un luogo di tendenza, raccolta e molto carina, vivace e coloratissima. Ci sono molti negozi dalle vetrine creative, di desing, café hipster, pub e ristoranti.
La zona di North Laine pullula di street art, come le zone circostanti, ad ogni angolo murales e graffiti, molto belli e ben fatti, dei veri e propri quadri all’aperto che rendono la città ancor più colorata.
Dopo un aperitivo al Plateau uno dei tanti locali alla moda, proprio dietro il nostro albergo conveniamo di cercare un posto per cena che rispecchi le nostre esigenze, dato che la sera prima abbiamo dovuto mangiare una pizza…
Premetto che io e il mio compagno siamo due gourmet pertanto il momento cena, in particolare, è molto importante, a pranzo ci accontentiamo di qualcosa di veloce ma la cena è un rituale. Il mio compagno ha un’enoteca e lavora quasi tutte le sere e i week end, pertanto nei pochi momenti liberi il cibo e il vino devono essere di qualità, come un po’ per tutti quelli del settore, il poco tempo libero e l’attitudine, la cosiddetta “deformazione professionale” ti portano a essere così, questa è la ragione per cui io cerco di risparmiare nei voli aerei e nel noleggio del veicolo perché poi l’alloggio deve essere piacevole e le soste goliardiche incidono sempre parecchio nei nostri viaggi.
Ed ecco che ricomincia a piovere, anche copiosamente, e siamo usciti senza umbrella… In Inghilterra, due mammalucchi… Diventa impossibile cercare con calma un ristorante. Dopo dieci minuti passati a correre e a metterci al riparo qua e là, arriviamo in una vietta disseminata di ristorantini e scegliamo quello che ci ispira di più, si chiama Semolina ed è un bistrot francese, quindi sì dopo l’involontario aperitivo al Plateau dove però abbiamo bevuto inglese: gin and tonic, scegliamo un ristorante francese. Ma che gourmet siete!? (Vi invito a leggere il mio libro per capire) Direte voi che mangiate italiano (è stato un caso) e francese in Inghilterra!? A parte gli scherzi abbiamo mangiato davvero bene e bevuto un’ottima bottiglia di vino francese, la nostra nazione preferita per quanto riguarda il vino. Vi avviso d’ora in avanti pub o ristoranti anglosassoni, la nostra filosofia è mangiare bene e tipico, anche dove la cucina non è il pezzo forte, nel caso specifico l’Inghilterra.
Spiaggia Brighton
L’indomani mattina dopo l’immancabile passeggiata nell’elegante spiaggia di sassi di Brighton, la preferita dai londinesi, dove sono rimasta affascinata dalle casette colorate a bordo spiaggia, facciamo una puntatina veloce al più famoso dei Piers, quello di Brighton che è il più famoso, i Piers erano molto in voga in epoca vittoriana e rispetto ad allora ne sono rimasti una metà, alcuni tra l’altro dal futuro incerto. E quindi andateli a vedere finché resistono!
D’ogni modo passeggiare lungo questo molo ricco di attrazioni, dallo scivolo che affaccia sull’oceano, alle montagne russe, oltre ai chioschi è un’esperienza abbastanza particolare, anche per il punto di vista che offre sia verso l’oceano sia verso la costa, purtroppo la giornata non è delle migliori ma lo stesso ci godiamo un bello spettacolo.
Arundel – West Sussex (13 miglia da Brighton)
In tarda mattinata riprendiamo il nostro viaggio, la destinazione per la notte sarà Salisbury ma ovviamente lungo il tragitto ci aspettano altre tappe, altre scoperte. La prima tappa veloce la facciamo a Worthing, anche qui l’energia del Pier ci rapisce e ci fermiamo in uno dei locali del molo per due birre; proseguiamo il viaggio e arriviamo ad Arundel, quando è uscita una bella giornata di sole, di quel sole caldo che non ti aspetti in Gran Bretagna in questa stagione.
Ci dirigiamo verso il Castello ma riusciamo a vederlo solo da fuori perché essendo privato è chiuso nei periodi meno turistici, la vista dall’esterno e l’ambiente circostante al castello sono comunque da fiaba: le case in stile Tudor, l’imponente Cattedrale, i cottages che si specchiano sulle acque del fiume che attraversa il paese, ai bordi del quale sono ormeggiate piccole barche.

Parcheggiamo nella zona centrale e andiamo alla ricerca di un posto dove mangiare, la cittadina è davvero carina, ogni abitazione è adornata da fiori, i negozietti molto curati e con le caratteristiche insegne. Dopo un’attenta esplorazione dei locali del centro decidiamo per Belinda’s Tearoom, una caratteristica casa del tè una via centrale disseminata di interessati abitazioni. L’offerta è molto varia, vediamo passare piatti fumanti dal profumo irresistibile, ma noi puntiamo su birra e sandwich in modo da tenere la fame per la sera, ci aspettano un paio d’ore in auto e preferiamo stare leggeri.
Salisbury – Wiltshire (53 miglia da Arundel)
Ripartiamo in direzione Salisbury, tralasciando Portsmouth e Southampton, purtroppo il tempo non ci permette una sosta in città così grandi, e comunque noi preferiamo i piccoli villaggi. Facciamo solo una piccola sosta a Chircester che si trova a una decida di miglia da Arundel. Chircester è una cittadina dallo stile inglese, dinamica, e scopriamo che è l’unica città in Inghilterra ad avere il campanile distaccato dalla Cattedrale.
Arriviamo a Salisbury verso le diciassette parcheggiamo in un parcheggio a pagamento in strada, che a breve sarà free, poco distante dall’alloggio. Entriamo al pub Qudos e facciamo il check in, per 5,50 sterline prendiamo anche la colazione per l’indomani, il pernottamento è costato 62 sterline. Giunti in camera la piacevole sorpresa, la camera è ancor più bella che in foto, di recente ristrutturazione letti comodissimi, abbiamo 2 singoli, ho prenotato la camera lungo il tragitto, poco prima dell’arrivo. Vista sulla strada ma isolamento ottimo, non si sente nulla né proveniente dalla strada, né dal pub sottostante. Doccia e via per le strade della città.
La scelta di Salisbury è dettata dalla volontà di vedere Stonehenge l’indomani e quindi diventava una soluzione comoda, oltretutto ha un sacco di bei pub, d’ogni modo è una cittadina carina e molto tranquilla, anche se solo qualche giorno fa qui sono stato uccisi, pare per avvelenamento, un’ex spia russa e sua figlia. La città è ancora sotto choc per l’accaduto.
Ci dirigiamo subito in Market Square, a pochi minuti dal nostro alloggio, attorno alla quale si sviluppa tutto il centro, molti ovviamente i pub, dopo una passeggiata nella zona decidiamo di fare una sosta per un paio di birre dato che è l’ora dell’aperitivo, fra i vari pub scegliamo prima il centralissimo Ox Row Inn, molto bello con arredamento abbastanza recente e poi il Market Inn, a fianco, anche questo con arrendamento recente, in entrambi consultiamo il menu, ma alla fine decidiamo di cenare nel pub dove alloggiamo.

Del resto non è proprio questo il vantaggio di soggiornare in una locanda: di quelle con il pub annesso che ti serve boccali di birra e un buon pasto prima di andare a letto presto….
In realtà, non andammo a letto presto, e abbiamo passato una delle più belle serate della vacanza, conquistati dalla musica che proponeva il locale e precisamente delle jam session. Dei virtuosi musicisti che si alternavano sul palco formando delle band sempre diverse e molto interessanti.
Dopo la tradizionale colazione inglese, carichiamo i bagagli in auto e facciamo un ultimo giro in centro in modo da scoprirne la vivacità del mattino. Incuriositi da quanto abbiamo letto sul pub più vecchio della città: The Haunch of Venison, decidiamo di entrare per concederci una dissetante birra e curiosare, è comunque uno dei migliori pub della zona: ha ricevuto diversi riconoscimenti, risale almeno al XIV secolo, epoca nella quale era una locanda dove venivano alloggiati manovali e artigiani che lavoravano alla costruzione della Cattedrale. In tempi più recenti, si narra, sia stato frequentato addirittura da Churchill ed Eisenhower, che pare si incontrassero qui per organizzare lo sbarco in Normandia. Il pub oltre agli antichi arredamenti in legno, vanta numerosi “cimeli” tra i quali anche una mano umana mummificata, che si dice sia stata tagliata nel XVIII secolo a un giocatore di carte perché barava, e che è esposta al pubblico. Sembra che il locale sia infestato dal fantasma del baro, la cui presenza viene avvertita tramite il rumore di passi lungo le scale e lo spostamento dei bicchieri sporchi. Oltre a questo, lo spettro di una donna sarebbe stato visto apparire alle finestre. Quindi se volete farvi una pinta in un ambiente davvero suggestivo è il posto giusto.
Stonehenge – Wiltshire (9,3 miglia da Salisbury)
Arriviamo a Stonehenge verso l’ora di pranzo, facciamo il biglietto e dopo aver visto le antiche dimore in paglia (bungalow) vicine all’area ricettiva, ci incamminiamo verso le “costruzioni” di roccia, sono a disposizione anche dei bus ma il percorso non è eccessivo e quindi per l’andata abbiamo preferito affidarci alle nostre gambe.
Il cielo carico di nubi offre uno spettacolo ancor più suggestivo, scatto un numero infinito di foto. Siamo lì assieme ad altri turisti in assoluto silenzio, invasi dallo stupore ad ammirare il complesso neolitico costituito da alcuni megaliti, e non puoi non pensare come sia stato possibile, in quell’epoca (fra il 2500 a.C il 2000 a.C.), erigere queste rocce in posizione verticale che hanno un peso di 25/50 tonnellate.
Dopo secoli, ancora molte sono le domande che non trovano risposta su Stonehenge, come: chi realizzò il complesso? E per quale motivo? Ma soprattutto, qual è il vero significato di questo sito? Si tratta di misteri che non hanno ancora ricevuto una risposta, anche se recentemente gli scienziati sono riusciti a scoprire nuovi dettagli riguardo la costruzione del sito, i quali rivelano che i giganteschi massi, in base ad alcuni rilievi, provengono da un sito che si trova a 30 chilometri di distanza, mentre quelli di dimensioni inferiori arrivano da una zona del Galles e trasportati tramite slitte trainate da decine di uomini e fatte scivolare su rulli di legno. Alla costruzione parteciparono centinaia di persone provenienti dai paesi vicini. Lo dimostrerebbero i resti di antichi banchetti trovati nell’insediamento di Durrington Walls vicino a Stonehenge, che servivano ad attirare gli operai che dovevano trasportare i massi. Per gli esperti la costruzione di Stonehenge all’epoca fu un evento eccezionale che coinvolse moltissime persone e conferì grande prestigio ai villaggi vicini.

Torniamo al parcheggio con il bus e nonostante l’appetito decidiamo di non fermarci a mangiare nella struttura ricettiva ma di fermarci lungo la strada verso Bath.
Bath – Sommerset (39 miglia da Salisbury)
Lungo il tragitto verso Bath (piccoli paesini) in realtà data l’ora, le 14.00 passate, non abbiamo trovato granché di aperto per mangiare e quindi arrivati a Bath ci dirigiamo direttamente in albergo, anche questo prenotato lungo il tragitto su Booking.com. La scelta dell’albergo è stata azzeccatissima, il bellissimo boutique hotel No 15 Great Pulteney
Abbiamo parcheggiato in strada davanti l’albergo e siamo entrati, dopo qualche istante di rapimento ad ammirare la bellezza e i dettagli dell’ingresso e del salotto che funge anche da reception, abbiamo fatto il check in, ci hanno chiesto dove avevamo parcheggiato e si sono occupati di regolarizzare la sosta attraverso internet, noi abbiamo semplicemente comunicato la targa dell’auto a noleggio.
La signorina ci accompagna in camera ed è bellissima, noi abbiamo prenotato la Camera doppia accogliente, la più economica in quanto camera compatta, non oso immaginare le suite, delle quali ovviamente sono andata a vedermi le foto.
Dopo aver sistemato il bagaglio e fatto la doccia, scendiamo e non avendo ancora soddisfatto la nostra fame, per fare onore al territorio optiamo per un caratteristico afternoon tea un’esperienza che affronto per la prima volta, ma che si preannuncia come un’esperienza fantastica. Ne ho la certezza data l’eleganza e il buon gusto dell’ambiente che ci circonda, il momento sarà davvero eccezionale e così è!
Si sa gli inglesi sorseggino il tè a tutte le ore, ne è prova il fatto che ogni camera d’albergo è dotata di bollitore, tazze e tutto ciò che è necessario per preparate la famosa bevanda inglese. Ma dimentichiamoci del tradizionale tè e biscotti perché il celeberrimo afternoon tea si rivela un’esperienza da favola. Generalmente per due, anche perché un momento per fare due chiacchiere per condividere, un po’ come la nostra ora dell’aperitivo. Si comincia con una flûte di bollicine per proseguire con una triple alzatine con un ripiano con sandwich e tartine, uno con scones, burro e marmellate e infine uno di dolcetti. Dopo il calice di vino si passa allo squisito tè caldo, nel nostro caso c’era una fornitissima selezione di tea.
A pancia piena, anche per smaltire, ci dirigiamo nel centro di Bath, l’albergo si trova a soli 300 metri da Pulteney Bridge e da lì arriviamo alle Terme e in tutta la zona centrale. Bath è davvero bellissima, elegante, imponente, il color oro delle pietre con le quali sono edificati quasi tutti gli immobili della città che nell’insieme sono qualcosa di spettacolare e la sua ricchezza culturale è davvero invidiabile. Per la sua importanza storica, il suo retaggio culturale e il suo valore architettonico Bath è stata dichiarata Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità UNESCO.
Pulteney Bridge
Fondata dai Romani come centro termale, dato che vi sgorgano le uniche sorgenti calde naturali della Gran Bretagna, divenne anche un importante ritrovo mondano, che nel XVIII secolo andò incontro a un forte sviluppo edilizio divenendo uno straordinario esempio di architettura Georgiana.
La coda per visitare le Terme Romane è notevole, ci riproveremo l’indomani, come per il museo archeologico. C’è molto da vedere a Bath: gli iconici edifici e quartieri Georgiani come il Royal Crescent, il Circus, Queen Square e le Assembly Rooms; i musei come il Museum of Bath Architecture, il No 1 Royal Crescent, il Fashion Museum, l’Holburne Museum e l’Herschel Museum of Astronomy, esposizione ospitata nella casa del famoso astronomo William Herschel e ovviamente il Jane Austen Centre che visiteremo domani mattina.
Terme Romane
Si è fatto buio e la città è ancora più bella, le piazzette e le viuzze ravvivate dalla gente fuori dai locali, la rendono elegante e vivace al tempo stesso, entriamo anche noi in uno dei tanti pub per un aperitivo a base di birra, ovviamente.
Torniamo in albergo per la cena, abbiamo prenotato nel ristorante al piano interrato dell’hotel. Inutile dire che anche l’arrendamento del ristorante rispetta i canoni dei boutique hotel è molto ricercato, il menu non molto ricco ma i piatti sembrano tutti interessanti, noi ordiniamo antipasto e secondo e, dalla carta dei vini, una bottiglia di pinot nero chileno. Dopo cena ci concediamo due gin tonic nel bellissimo bar dell’hotel e poi via a nanna.
La mattinata seguente la passiamo in giro per Bath a vedere un po’ di attrazioni che non eravamo riusciti a vedere il giorno prima, verso l’una ci fermiamo in un pub per consumare un sandwich per poi proseguire verso Castel Combe, nelle Costwolds.

Bibury – Gloucestershire, Costwolds (32,3 miglia da Castel Combe)
Ripartiamo da Castel Combe in direzione Bilbury, altro paesino da fiaba e altro paesino che meriterebbe un articolo a parte, ma il problema è che non ci sto dietro, ho una lista infinita di luoghi da raccontare e se ne aggiungono continuamente di nuovi, per fortuna… ma molti restano nei miei ricordi.
Al momento ve lo racconto brevemente poi chissà. Bibury incanta sin da subito come arrivi in Arlington Row, per le file di cottage di mattoni scuri risalenti al XIV secolo che vi si affiancano e che conferiscono un fascino romantico e suggestivo alla località immersa nel verde, dall’altro lato della strada scorre placido il Fiume.
L’artista William Morris lo definì “il più bel villaggio delle Cotswolds”, e le ragioni sono chiare in un attimo. Anche a Bibury come a Castel Combe il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Il villaggio conta appena 600 residenti, anche se le l’accoglienza non manca, molti cottage sono stati trasformati in hotel ed è quindi possibile soggiornare fuori dal tempo. Anche qui ci è venuta l’idea di fermarci per una notte ma purtroppo il tempo a nostra disposizione si sta esaurendo, siamo quasi sulla via del ritorno. D’ogni modo ci siamo ripromessi di fare le Cotswold con la dovuta calma.
Ci godiamo una passeggiata lungo il fiume Coln e lungo il tragitto abbiamo già individuato l’hotel per la prossima visita, è lo Swan Hotel che occupa un bellissimo edificio ricoperto d’edera che sorge appunto sulle rive del fiume. La passeggiata lungo il fiume Coln infonde pace e relax ed esprime tutta la serenità del paesaggio. Il corso d’acqua è l’habitat naturale di numerose trote e, scopriamo che in zona, ci sono diversi allevamenti ittici.

Non potendoci fermare per la notte decidiamo almeno di pranzare in questo luogo fantastico prima di ripartire e ovviamente la nostra scelta ricade sulla trota con patate, come antipasto prendiamo delle saint jacques e una bottiglia di Chardonnay inglese, si avete capito bene, inglese!
Windsor – Berkshire (69 miglia Bibury)
Passiamo per Oxford ma dobbiamo lasciarla per un’altra volta. Quando arriviamo a Windsor non abbiamo ancora prenotato l’hotel, la media dei prezzi è abbastanza alta e la scelta non è semplice.
Non vi racconto dell’hotel perché è costato troppo per com’era, in particolare, tenendo conto degli alberghi nei quali abbiamo alloggiato nel resto della vacanza. Le foto non facevano capire quanto piccola fosse la stanza, letto alla parete una poltrona e fare i turni per camminare, chiedo subito il cambio con una stanza più grande. Rinnovata anche da poco ma senza gusto e non proprio pulitissima, parecchia la polvere.
Facciamo la doccia e usciamo subito alla scoperta di Windsor. Quando sentiamo il nome Windsor il primo pensiero va alla casa reale del Regno Unito. Il nome era chiaramente ispirato dal Castello di Windsor che da secoli è emblema significativo e dimora della monarchia britannica. Un castello imponente e suggestivo circondato dal verde che si estende fino al centro della cittadina, è tardi per visitarlo e quindi lo faremo domani, intanto ci concediamo una passeggiata nel verde. Il Castello è collegato da un lunghissimo viale alberato al Windsor Great Park, un parco immenso e incontaminato. La passeggiata che conduce al parco prende il nome di Long Walk. Creata nel 1685 da Carlo II era utilizzata come sentiero per cavalli che dal castello portava al Lago di Virginia Water.
Una passeggiata davvero incredibile che vi condurrà a un parco di circa 2000 ettari dove potrete ammirare tra le imponenti querce, una ricca fauna. All’interno del Parco sorge anche Frogmore House, una residenza di campagna del XVII secolo che è aperta al pubblico in alcuni giorni dell’anno.
Prima di cena ci concediamo un giro tra le vie della città, nell’area pedonale tra Peascod Street, King Edward Court e Windsor Royal Shopping, dove l’atmosfera è tranquilla ma brillante, c’è davvero l’imbarazzo della scelta tra i tanti negozi e le botteghe di prodotti tipici. Noi abbiamo acquistato due sciarpe in fantasia a quadri in prefetto stile inglese, in un negozietto di fianco al Municipio, nella zona ci edifici ben conservati che risalgono al XVII secolo.
Palazzetto a Windsor
Ceniamo in un pub in una stradina vicino il castello il The Dechess of Cambrige, molto carino, nella nostra ultima serata inglese abbiamo mangiato Fish and chips e Guinness, ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo, e poi a letto.
Dopo colazione nella nostra ultima giornata oltre Manica (in serata abbiamo il volo) andiamo al Castello. Si sono succeduti ben 39 monarchi britannici e oggi le stanze reali che hanno accumulato un gran numero di opere d’arte di grande pregio. Appartenenti alla Royal Collection dipinti di Rembrandts, Rubens e Canaletto. Nel parco di 11 ettari del castello c’è la Cappella di Saint George, un esempio stupendo di architettura gotica inglese, che accoglie le spoglie della maggior parte dei sovrani inglesi. Vale la pena assistere anche qui al cambio della Guardia si tiene tutti i giorni da aprile a luglio e a giorni alterni da agosto a marzo, tranne la domenica. Si può assistere presentando il biglietto d’accesso al castello.
