Hisashi had been walking back to school from the bookshop in town, grateful that the store also sold umbrellas when the rain had started to pour. He wasn’t wearing a coat, definitely not anticipating the foul weather, and his thin frame shivered in the cold air; despite his three piece suit. His nose wrinkled as he surveyed the gloomy scenery, attempting not to let the puddles of water on the road soak his sock and make him even colder; it was unpleasant enough as it was.
That was when he saw the girl without an umbrella, soaked through and cold. Now that was a worse situation, definitely, and he stopped mentally cussing out the weather; instead, he walked towards her, and offered his umbrella.
He didn’t want to invade the girl’s personal space, so was stood with a reasonable distance back. Unfortunately, that also meant that he wasn’t covered; rain water getting in his eyes and plastering his wet hair to his forehead in a matter of moments. Luckily, she’d stepped closer fairly quickly, and he could go under the umbrella once more.
“My apologies if this was a little too forward,” He began.

Hisashi tapped her foot impatiently as she waited in line at the local coffee shop. She only wanted a normal coffee, but it seemed that everyone in line wanted something more complex, with pointless latte art and other such things. If she could stand the taste of instant coffee, or could justify buying a coffee machine to herself, she wouldn’t have to deal with this. But... That wasn’t the case.
The line was too slow, however. She couldn’t stand waiting in line anymore, and promptly stepped out of line to go home, when she almost bumped into someone carrying their own purchase.
“M-my apologies, I did not see you there,” She blurted, panicked that she could have made someone drop their drink, and possibly scald themselves...

Hisashi hissed as she attempted to move her foot, sitting on the floor in a hallway that might as well have been abandoned. She knew running was a bad idea in her new shoes, yet she’d wanted to get to the biology lab quickly and did so anyway.
Of course, rather than simply getting in trouble with the hall monitor, she fell. The heel, small though it was, wasn’t something she was used to, and her ankle gave way with a sickening crack!
She’d managed to gather herself up from the ungraceful heap she’d landed in, now sitting upright, but unable to stand up. The throbbing pain in her ankle stopped her from putting any weight on it, and she didn’t know if she could struggle to either her room or the nurse’s office by herself...
In a fortunate turn of events, she finally spotted someone not to far away. She didn’t know if they’d actually help, but there was no harm in asking. “Excuse m-me!” She called out to them, still choking a little on the pain, tremors running through her thin form, “I am t-terribly sorry, but I have hurt my ankle...”

Hisashi sighed, chin resting on her hands as she slouched over the table. This felt... uncomfortable. Talking to a stranger about things relating to her work... Or, she supposed, just to a stranger in general, really.
Mikoto was actually the one to tell her about this... Pink Lemonade Royalty character, being an avid reader of their advice column himself. It wasn’t like Hisashi didn’t trust her big brother, but... Well, no. Not when his advice was to see someone she didn’t know about getting advice. She gave him points for originality, but still... For someone so smart, he had very little advice to give his dear little sibling - or, he just wanted Bland Whitaker’s autograph...
“I am sorry for bothering you with this petty matter, Whitaker-san, but I would like to know the best way to approach a supervisory figure about a change in policy that you are not happy with...” She sighed, finally managing to speak up properly, “I have my own methods, but they want me to change them to suit my current supervisor’s own. I am very uncomfortable with the new practices, but do not know how to bring it up in the appropriate manner...”
Tumblr media
“Hence, asking for advice.”

Hisashi was nervous that she was being ignored when the other boy didn’t respond, feeling a little too self-conscious. It was also something she should do, going to gym class, and she’d follow through with it. Still, it was a little embarrassing; standing in the hallway, lost, in her t-shirt and skort that felt much too short. It was better than the girls’ “shorts”, but she was only willing to show skin when she was too hot. However, the boy turned around. A delayed reaction was better than no reaction, she supposed; at least this way, she’d be able to find her way.
That was when the wave of words came rushing over her. It only confused her more, if she was honest, and she was about to ask him to slow down before he offered the alternative. That could work…
“If… you do not mind,” She nodded shyly, “But if you have other things to attend to, I understand. I should be able to find my way around campus by now, anyway…”

@hopespeakdoctor
Hisashi stormed into the doctor’s office, her face twisted in annoyance and fists clenched so hard that her nails made indentations in her skin. She was angry, and completely rationally. She understood that human error was something that occurred, she’d made mistakes herself in the past, but she wanted to tell the person responsible off. They risked both her own safety, the safety of the machine, and possibly the remains...
“Togami-san, correct?” She inquired, not even bothering to wait for a reply before continuing, “My name is Itoshiki Hisashi, and I am the Ultimate Mortician. I have come here today to inform you that either yourself or a member of staff has made a mistake in their paperwork. One of my latest clients, Harada Kioshi, had a pacemaker...”

Hisashi closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of his black coffee and letting his tense shoulders relax. The latest client had a some-what overprotective wife, an older lady from America, and that was always a headache. He understood, but the near-accusations she was making were incredibly morbid and rather insulting. He supposed she had a reason, however...
“Tri-State Crematory,” He stated to his companion, who was sitting across from him, “It was a big scandal back in... 2002, I believe. I was three at the time, but my brother was seven and had a love of twisted things like this. The whole story started back in 1996, when Rey Brent Marsh had to move back home to take over the family business - a crematory - when his father became ill.”
He put down his mug, leaning forward a little in his seat. “He works there for six years; however, odd complaints start arising. The man who delivered the gas reports to the sheriff’s office that there were cadavers scattered around the area surrounding Tri-State; which is ignored. The year after, the Environmental Protection Agency receive a report that there are bodies in the woods around the property, which is also ignored,” Hisashi huffed, making his disgust with those authorities perfectly clear.
“Finally, in 2002, a dog walker found a human bone in the woods that were reported to be a dumping ground for cadavers. At last, the authorities investigate Tri-State and Marsh-san, to find what one officer described as something out of a Steven King novel,” He continued, taking a breath. He found the story revolting, especially because of his respect for the dead, death, and the rituals surrounding it, “There were... many corpses scattered around the property, in various states of decomposition, in every building the investigators opened. Some in caskets, some laying discarded around the crematory - abandoned and... leaking, even some in a broken down hearse and in wooden crates... One was even hanging half way out of the cremation machine. There were infant skeletons, also...”
He sat back once more, rubbing a hand over his face. “Three hundred and thirty four bodies... People with families and loved ones, who had lives, just... Discarded. Left to purify like refuse,” He sighed, “It is... horrific. My latest client’s wife, she must have heard about it not too long before leaving America to live in Japan, with her husband. These things leave a scar on the profession... On actual people, who become terrified of what we do when they leave the room...”

“It truly disgusts me... Even if the man might not be fully to blame...”

Hisashi’s eyes were wide as he listened to the other berate him, a small tremor running through every fibre of his thin frame. From his experience, this usually ended with him getting a black eye or bloody nose. He hoped the other boy hit him quickly, rather than drawing the process out; he hadn’t been hit in a while, and so was nearly choking on his anxiety at the thought. Not that he wouldn’t be scared anyway, but this felt more… potent than before.
“I-I really did not mean to!” He assured, usually deep voice cracking, “I am sorry, I will be more careful in future; I momentarily lost my balance, I am sorry…”

“My apologies!”

Hisashi wasn’t used to this; city life, being this scared, having to watch their back… The only thing they’d really been scared of in Shimane was the ocean, and drowning, but now there was so much. It was Tokyo, it was big, and Hisashi knew they were naive.
He reached forward, taking the phone with his shaking hands, and typed in the number of that nice boy who had a room next to his. He’d said that Hisashi could call if he had any problems, and this was definitely a problem...
“I... I am not hurt...” Hisashi assured, almost breathlessly, as he sent him a text outlining the basic events, and if he could perhaps pick him up. He wasn’t. His shirt was torn a little, he was shaking, and his jacket had been taken because it looked expensive, but... He was alright. He wasn’t bruised, except maybe his wrist from how roughly the man had grabbed him, but it didn’t... hurt.
If it didn’t hurt, he’d be fine.
He sent the text, even if it took him much longer to type out the message than usual, and wasn’t sure whether to give the phone back now or not. He needed to see a reply, as Hojo-san wasn’t obligated to help him, but it was the girl’s phone.

Hisashi hummed quietly to herself as she went over the notes she’d started preparing for this year’s practical exam. Her ideas involved negotiating a bit of red tape, and it never hurt to be prepared, so she started early just as she had the year before. It was going well, in her opinion; the examiners should be happy with her work...
That was when her thoughts were interrupted by a cacophony of noise, her pencil dragging along the page as she jumped, crossing through the few paragraphs she’d written. Perfect. The sound wasn’t unpleasant, but it was loud, and she couldn’t concentrate with the music blaring like that...
She pushed herself to her feet, brushing off her skirt and long socks, and headed towards the source of the noise. Hopefully, a polite request would be enough to get them to turn down the volume of the speakers, at least.
When she rounded the corner, she finally found the musician responsible, and she... She was cute. However, that didn’t matter. She needed to focus, and other people might find the volume troubling also; it was better to bring it up now than leaving her to possibly get into trouble...

Hisashi’s eyes widened when she heard that he couldn’t see. It was sudden, too; honestly, that was a concerning sign right there, and he seemed to realise that much at least. Eyes were fragile, she knew a lot about that, but they didn’t just… stop working, without reason. She didn’t know the other, however, so she was hesitant to just grab his hand and pull him along.
“I can escort you to the nurse’s office,” She informed, sounding a little too curt, “Is it alright to hold your hand? Or would you like to be guided in a different way?”

Hisashi crossed his arms, looking at the latest paperwork for his client, after meeting with the family. It seemed they were the sort of people who went for embalming, sealed caskets, wanting their deceased loved one to be incorruptible.
He didn’t... understand that. Not really. He thought that the point of burial was to decompose, return to the earth, but no. Some people were just scared to face death as what it was. Open eyes turning milky blue, jaw open, flesh breaking down and turning a pretty, almost aqua-marine colour. They had to be pumped full of dangerous chemicals, locked away where not even the air could get to them, turning into a putrid bog rather than drying out and wasting to bone.
“Did you know that the main danger in embalming is the formaldehyde, rather than the body itself?” He began, “It is a designated carcinogen, increasing the embalmer’s risk of leukaemia, as well as being linked to the motor neuron disease, ALS, and male embalmers. Four times more likely to develop the disease, to be precise.”
Tumblr media
“There are multiple complications that arrive with short-term exposure, also.”
