It was mid 80’s. Danny wanted to be a rising star.
His imagination took him anywhere when he wrote lyrics and spit real shit.
He guessed thats why he was so accepted to the culture where rap originated. He was gay, and others didn’t seem to bother. Of course there were a few bumps now and then. Like when his friend Shane wanted to take him to a blind date. Never going to happen.
Danny was a 26 year old man that worked in a studio, answering calls and not-so secretly observing the guests on the local radio.
Because of where Danny lived, people were scared. Danny had been involved in a long of gang activities, even shootouts. He liked to drink, not too much, and had gotten high a few times in his life. But music was his passion.
He dropped out school when he was 14 years old. He didn’t need education if the fire for music was what kept him living. Danny’s writing for music were considered quite offensive and a 'fuck you’ to the corrupted government they were living in.
Danny didn’t like to consider their 'group’ as, well a 'group’ but he got a couple of cool bitches who could sing. There was Jason, Christopher, Davis and Shane. The weirdest mixed-racial kind of group you can get. They didn’t care about race or the division American’s were forced to believe, they loved music and the opposing of the government.
Danny sat on the back of Davis’ car, a pen in his hand, paper in the other and a joint in his mouth. Christopher was calling someone. Christopher wasn’t really a singer, but they liked to consider him as a 'manager’. That guy was working his ass off to get them some gigs.
Davis and Shane were standing beside the 7/11 behind Christopher and Danny, talking and nodding there heads when they turned to walk towards the pair. Jason was busy working that night so it was just the 4.
“Hey Danny, how you holding up?” Davis asked, leaning on the car. Danny lifted his head and looked to his notebook.
“We don’t need your dictatorship, this beginning to look like World War III shit." Danny spoke, whilst shaking his head, crossing that idea immediately.
Shane smirked looking over at Danny’s papers. "Not so good I’m assuming, Davis.” Davis chuckled, brushing over his red Vauxhall car, his pride and treasure.
Danny flicked the bright joint over at Shane, missing him. “I’d like to see you come up with something better."
"I do.” Shane leaned forward to Danny. With that, Danny pushed himself the fuck back away.
“Go on then, prick.”
“A new member."
"Piss off.” Danny held his hand up in front of his face and chuckled quietly. Shane pushed his hand down with a quick slap, to which Danny looked at the darkening midnight blue sky, littered with stars. Inspiration please come to me, Danny thought.
Shane knew Danny was pushing away his ideas but Shane was certain this would work out. Danny just had to listen for once.
“Listen, this could work out. This dude is smart, Danny, really smart."
"What does that got to do with music, Mr. Aussie phd, doctor, biologist idiot.” Danny mimicked Shane as Shane pulled out a card, flicking it at Danny.
“The fact he is one of the biggest musicians and producers in Asuza, Mr. American Know-It-All.” The card lay on Danny’s lap, staring him in the eye.
Danny stood up and put the card in his pocket, walking towards the 7/11 to get a drink. When Danny entered the brightly lit shop, with one flickering on the far right, and a middle-aged Mexican man standing smoking at the till.
Roy Haylock
Music Producer & Musician
340 San Gabriel Drive, CA, 91723, USA
Roy Haylock? Huh. How come Danny didn’t know of him. Danny put the card back in his pocket and grabbed a Coke, going towards the till.
After paying, Danny heard a car swerving and pulling up towards Davis’ car. Danny cursed to himself as he seen Christopher squaring up to the 3 other unknown men. Davis and Shane backed Christopher up, Danny had to step in.
Danny walked confidently and quickly towards the groups growling at each other.
“Hey, hey, hey what’s going on here?” Danny stood in between them, holding a hand up which glared yellow from the street lights.
The older looking one stepped up. “Your boy here,” The man pointed at Shane “And that Dardo boy, was beating my cousin over here.” The man’s finger moved to the slightly cocky boy standing beside him.
Danny rolled his eyes. Looking at Shane. You fucking idiot, Danny mouthed to Shane.
“Ok, well man, I apologise in behalf of my friends, can we just leave it that?” Danny turned to the pair, standing, clearly unimpressed.
“No we can’t, fist and fist, faggot.” The older man’s hand tensed up, as Danny spun around laughing at the name he was called.
“You’re really funny yknow I think-” Danny cut himself off with a upper-hand right hook to the mans face, sending him straight to the ground. Christopher and Shane bounced on the other man standing who was about to swing for Danny. Davis ran to the car, starting it up.
“Get in, now!” Davis shouted as the other 3 that were punching the pair, sprinted in the car and speeding away.
“Shit.” Danny breathed out, leaning back.
“Yeah shit.” Christopher sighed.
-
340 San Gabriel Drive.
Danny stood outside a beautiful looking music studio in Downtown. Shane, Davis and Jason stood beside Danny as they stared at the oak door.
“Let’s do this then.” Jason sighed as they walked in together.
The wood and nature effect gave Danny an impression of comfort but the urban and rewarding vinyls gave it a modern effect. Nice. There was a small desk with an equally small assistant, working away.
Shane coughed quietly, bringing the old assistant out of her peace.
“Oh sorry there boys! How can I help you all today?"She smiled, standing up. She was so precious.
"We’re here to see Roy. Roy Haylock?” Davis asked, scratching his neck awkwardly as the woman’s face lit up.
“Ah! Roy. Right this way boys!” They followed the giddy old woman towards a small room as Shane and Danny giggled about the cute woman.
The assistant left, leaving the 3 to the small door. They all shrugged in unison.
Danny leaned forwards, knocking the door. Seconds later, the door was answered. Danny was shocked. He immediately locked on Roy and due to the lack of oxygen and the increase of creepy staring, Danny knocked himself from thoughts. He was speechless at the nicely dressed Roy in front of him.
“Hey guys! - Shane!” Roy walked towards Shane, hugging him tightly. Well thats every chance Danny had with Roy. God dammit. “Davis!” Roy turned around to hug him too as Jason and Danny stood awkwardly.
Roy detached himself from the boys and looked at Jason and held out his hand.
“Sorry 'bout that, I’m Roy, nice to meet you.” Roy shook his hand, smiling cooly.
He turned to Danny but stopped, looking him up and down. Danny bit his lip as he held his hand out. “I’m Danny, and that is Jason.” Roy shook his hand, looking a little shocked. Hm. “It’s really nice to meet you Danny.” Roy smiled shyly but then composed himself. “Come in, come in!”
The 4 walked in, Shane and Davis sitting on the little sofa, along with Jason jumping on them, whilst Danny sat on a little chair, laughing at his friends.
Danny didn’t acknowledge the glances Roy would steal whilst they all small talked, and Roy didn’t know the glances Danny would steal. It was a little intense.
“So, You are allowed to use this studio 3 times a week for 3 hours, and I guess I’ll be joining you. Start making ideas for albums, gigs, shit like that. Sound good?” Davis and Jason high fived whilst Davis gasped, looking at Danny who had the biggest cheesiest grin ever.
Danny didn’t know why but he ran over to hug Roy, who was taken aback.
“We’re going to make it boys!” Davis shouted, whilst Jason ran over to hug Danny and Roy.
“Let’s party!” Shane screamed, jumping into the air.
-
It was 11.43pm in Danny’s small apartment. They were all drunk, and Christopher joined too. Roy and Danny were in the kitchen, opening the fress pizza they had just ordered.
“So Danny, why do you do music?” Roy leaned against the cold marble breakfast bar.
Danny turned to a huge dimple smiled Roy. He immediately melted. Danny didn’t know that in a space of 13 hours, he would fall in love. He felt connected, and almost drawn to Roy. Not to mention, Danny was heavily attracted to the man. He couldn’t help but admire him.
“Honestly? It’s the only thing I’m good at.” Danny answered, smiling briefly.
Roy leaned closer to Danny.
“I don’t think I believe that.”
“It’s true, I pride in my music only, it’s the only thing I’ve ever loved.”
Roy smiled.
“Would you love anything else?"
"Who knows."
-
A few months later, Danny and Roy met up for a coffee. It was a peaceful, warm day and the sun seemed to seep through the tinted windows of the shop.
"My treat, what do you want?” Roy asked as they sat down in a cute little booth, smiling widely.
“Just a sandwich and coke please.” Danny answered, pink tinting his cheeks slightly. Roy noticed and smiled.
“Do you think we’ll need a couple of weeks and the album will be finished?”
Danny nodded, to that Roy and stood up walking to the counter to order.
Just then a tall figure stood in front of Danny. Looking down on him like a piece of shit.
“New boy?” The figure asked as Danny stood up, biting his lip.
“No James, It’s not. You can leave me alone.” Danny looked up at him, raising his brow.
James laughed quietly as he leaned towards Danny. With that, Danny moved back.
“C'mon Danny, please.”
“No! You cheated on me, I don’t want to see you.” Danny held his hand in front of his face.
“I said I was sorry.” James sighed, looking down. Fuck him, Danny thought.
James was probably Danny’s first boyfriend. This happened a year ago and when Danny found out he was cheating, he dumped him. No way was Danny gonna let ANYONE treat him like shit. Thats why Danny thought he liked Roy, because he treats him nice, like a human.
Danny was interrupted by his thoughts when he started to worry when he felt a pair of hands around his waist and immediately relaxed and let go of the breath he didn’t realising he was holding in.
“Everything okay babe?” Roy took his left hand, tracing Danny’s shoulder with it. Danny caught on to what Roy was doing, but couldn’t help imagine if it was real, it was giving Danny goosebumps the way Roy touched him.
“Y-Yes, everything’s good. This man here was just leaving.” Danny turned around to Roy smiling, silently thanking him for saving him from killing his damn self.
Danny gasped when he felt a pair of lips kiss his neck briefly. He was speechless, Roy’s lips felt amazing against his skin and couldn’t help his face shade into a bright red.
“Thats good, our foods coming.” Roy detached himself from Danny which almost made Danny empty but nonetheless, James walked away with an angry expression and both sat down.
“Thank you so so much Roy, honestly you saved me.” Danny spoke as soon as James was out of sight, sighing.
Roy smirked. “Not a problem, Who was that anyway?”
“This guy I used to date, total douche.” Danny waved it off, taking in what happened 30 seconds prior. Reminding him, Danny was surprised how Roy moved his hands across his body.
“Do you do that professionally? Save young gay men from big scary monsters?” Danny laughed loudly as Roy joined.
Roy shook his head. “Just a gay man saving another gay man."
Danny bit his lip. Roy was gay. So cross that idea of being straight off the list of reasons why Roy would not date Danny.
"Nice.” Danny giggled whilst standing up grabbing their meal.
-
One year later
“Are you ready for this California?” Shane screamed shouted down the microphone, staring back to 4,000 people standing, screaming back yes.
Davis was jogging circles around the stage, getting hyped up to the beat. Looking over at Christopher from the side of the stage, giving him a thumbs up.
Jason was up at the front row, high fiving fans who were screaming and jumping at the beat that was building up. The hall they were in was full to brim, even then, there was people outside, desperately trying to listen.
Roy was up at the deck where a close friend Matt was playing the record as Roy started to sway his hips dancing, closing his eyes, taking in every bit of his life as he good.
As for Danny, he was staring at Roy being every bit of Roy he was being. Silly, funny and someone Danny was in love with. Danny pulled his gaze from Roy to the thousands of people there to listen to Danny’s lyrics, Danny’s voice. He was truly and forever grateful for everything he had. He was finally a star, finally important in music industry, rapping about the government, feelings and being high. Real, deep, meaningful music. There was just something missing.
Danny took a deep breath as he started.
“They got me starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can’t hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it’s time to die
Gettin high, watchin time fly”
-
Roy breathed out backstage, leaning on a railing 3 hours after they started the concert.
Danny got up behind him, picking him up.
“That was fucking badass!” Danny shouted, sweating buckets.
Roy laughed loudly, dropping down, hugging Danny briefly.
“That was great Danny, you’ve fucking made it!” Roy shoved Danny lightly as his face lit up, jumping up and down.
“They’ve got a party outside with a bunch of fans, wanna come?” Danny asked, putting a hand on his hip.
Roy looked at Danny and how he became attached to Danny, rising up to a star. It was a whirlwind of months and nearly 2 years, but they had all made it.
Roy took a breath in, he had to do it. They had only been on 4 tours but California was their biggest crowd yet and probably best performance.
“I have to do something first.” Roy closed his eyes and leaned in.
Danny and Roy slips connected, smiling into the kiss, Danny pulled Roy closer.
A cheer was heard behind them from some management team and the rest of the group. They stopped and looked behind them, still holding eachother.
“Fucking finally!” Shane threw his hands up in the air, cheering.
Roy and Danny laughed, holding their heads together.
“What took you so long?” Danny whispered, blushing.
Roy chuckled. “I had to build up the courage one day, I’m guessing you like me back.”
“Fuck yes.”
-
They all went outside with a couple of beers, the car playing music loudly in the car park with the street lights illuminating everything.
They were all singing along with the song playing, dancing and bumping into each other.
Roy held Danny’s waist, moving with him.
“We’ve made it Danny.” Roy smiled, looking around him, pecking him quickly.
“I know Roy,” Danny looked at the car jumped on the roof of it, bringing Roy with him. Roy raised his eyebrow as Danny raised his beer bottle.
“WE’VE FUCKING MADE IT!” Danny screamed as Roy hugged him and everyone cheered back.
Davis, Jason and Christopher joined them all on the car hugging each other.
They made it.
