      The humming stopped. Some long forgotten church hymn. She never payed attention hard enough to remember the words. The music was prettier by itself anyway. Aside from that, Fox made no motion that she had heard him or that she cared for what he said. Her hands kept kneading the dough beneath them over and over again until it was coated with flour and herbs. Anything to make it taste less like ash and more like being alive.

      It was only after she had placed the ball of dough back into a bowl and covered it with a faded dishcloth--someone had embroidered flowers in the corner once, but the threads were cut and sticking out as if they grew from the fabric in the flower’s place--that she answered him. “You aren’t the only one.” Her back to him, she began cleaning her workspace, pushing all the dishes into the sink. She saved what flour she could, though there wasn’t much left. There wasn’t much of anything left there anymore.
        “All the violence in the world won’t save you from this place. No one ever leaves. Anyone who tries ends up right back where they started--though they usually aren’t breathing anymore when they do.”
