I'm Savannah "Fursona" Caruso, leader of the Fursona's Fusiliers mercenary unit. You may have heard of us, but if not, it's understandable; we haven't done all that much since Fortress Republic and The Wall went up. Fought in the Battle of Terra, I guess that's notable. But most of our success was prior to the Republic, the 4th Succession War, the Clan Invasion, the Jihad.

As far as size, the Fusiliers are roughly two RCTs in size - 72 Mechs, 72 Combat Vehicles, 12 AeroSpace Fighters, a battalion of PA(L) "unarmored" infantry, a battalion of Battle Armor infantry, and two platoons of Space Marines. Got ourselves two modified Colossus class DropShips, and our pride and joy, the Argo. Relic of the first Star League, civilian exploration vessel. She's got her very own Grav Deck, and is the only DropShip with the MCDS, Multiple Collar Docking System; lets us attach two other DropShips to the Argo, and daisy-chain 'em along through a jump.

I've been asked by... heh... Commanding General Hazen - seriously, Mysty, wow, talk about a promotion, huh?

Anyway, I've been asked by her to "make myself available for queries or interactions". We've gotten settled in here in the Islington system finally - heh, hard to find the Argo a big enough docking berth on the station...

First DTIYS I've hosted and it's on my humble little beastzai rp blog. Go figure. Anyways, I'm happy to host this, even though it's my first time. With that being said, below is the information, and under the cut is the art I made for this!

Read the following carefully before participating.

people often think they have chuuya all figured out.

chuuya nakahara, the mafia executive. chuuya nakahara, the gravity manipulator. chuuya nakahara, the ruthless, stone-cold killer that could crush you with the snap of his fingertips.

chuuya nakahara, who loves stupid, corny jokes.

his days at work are exhausting. endless paperwork, bloody messes he’s tasked with cleaning up, and the ever increasing stain on his morality that accompanied being a warden of the night. he didn’t want to think that this was him. but he made a vow to protect the city and to protect you.

but that doesn’t mean you can’t protect him in your own, silly way.

“doll.” he groans, stepping into your shared bedroom. its 2 in the morning, and he’s just finished writing off some deal with a country he can’t pronounce. you can tell by the circles under his eyes and his ruffled orange hair.

“come here.” you invite him, patting the space on the bed next to you. you’re ready to just hold him, to stroke his hair and kiss the taste of darkness on his lips away. and he loves you for it, but he has something different in mind as he flops down onto the bed next to you.

“…tell me one of your jokes.” 

he sighs, getting his head comfortable in your lap.

you ponder for a moment. would that really make him feel better?

you eventually relent: “chuuya?”

“hm?” he asks, his eyes still closed from the relaxing head message you’ve blessed him with. he could melt into your touch forever.

“how do you build suspense?”

“i don’t know. how do you build suspense, doll?”

“……..”

“….oh, fuck you.”

he laughs, getting the punchline. you chuckle alongside him, the vibrations from his voice sending wavelengths of love through your fingertips. he looks beautiful from this angle. many people knew chuuya nakahara- the calculated, well dressed mafioso. you knew chuuya- the blushing, messy haired love of your life laying comfortably next to you.

he pushes himself off of your lap and takes you in his, wrapping his arms around you in an embrace you wouldn’t trade for the world. he’s got hands that make hell seem cold. the way he laughs, the way his eyes gleam, he’s like a poem you wish you wrote.

you spend the rest of the night telling him dumb dad jokes, and he laughs at every single one. simply because its you.

Hey, what makes a character a 'plot device but not a character'? And how do you not do that? I'm trying to do it on purpose but also I need to still make them interesting because it's on purpose, yknow?

A good skill to pick up is to learn to criticise criticism itself. A "plot device" is simply a thing that moves the plot along, it's a neutral literary analysis term! Usually, when people are angry that "a character has been used as a plot device," it doesn't mean they hate plot devices. It means they're gesturing at something deeper.

Runningwind and Bumble are equally plot devices in their deaths. They are both killed by the antagonist to escalate political tension. Runningwind is rarely "accused" of just being a plot device, and yet, we're talking about Bumble for the same thing.

So, why?

Well, Runningwind is just a background character, but in life, he was a part of the community. He was characterized as impatient but responsible. Yet, he wasn't SO important that he died with a bunch of unresolved plot threads.

He is mostly an extension of the entity of ThunderClan. His killing by Tigerstar, and the fear and paranoia that settles on the group after this, feel like a progression of the story insteas of something forced.

Bumble, on the other hand...

Is hated immediately by Gray Wing, when she's established as Turtle Tail's friend. Bumble's abuse at Tom the Wifebeater's hands invites even MORE investment. The rejection is shocking and upsetting. There's a story there about our main characters being imperfect; jealous, bigoted, and judgemental.

But, she is simply killed off. Everything they set up for this character is gone with little personalized fanfare. It's not a tragedy with a lesson about cruelty, or something anyone regrets.

It's just... plot. Gray Wing whinging that no one will like his shitty brother now that his body count is 2.

More than that, in the discussion of women in particular, "Fridging" was coined to give a name to the way women characters often don't get their stories told at all. There is a CULTURAL trend of female characters facing disproportionate violence, for the sake of advancing male plots.

Bumble has a lot going for her. Petal had a lot going for her. Turtle Tail had a lot going for her. Bright Stream had a lot going for her. When they died, they took their potential with them.

It's not always wrong to kill off a character of high potential, mind you. In Gurren Lagann, Kamina's death is sudden and shocking, leaving a massive hole in the hearts of the cast that never heals. Grappling with that loss, but also letting his memory fuel them, is a major theme of that story.

All that to say... there's no formula for avoiding it. You've gotta identify what the deeper issue is, in your specific narrative.

I can't say for certain what that will look like for your story, but here's some things I keep in mind;

When you make characters who exist to die, make sure they're people before you axe them.

Ask yourself; what about them does the cast miss?

If they just miss them because they were (pre-existing relationship), go back to the drawing board.

Fluttering Bird as an example. Who was she? Dead sister. Why do they miss her? Dead sister. No traits until after her death.

Runningwind was short-tempered and helpful. Kamina was a valuable leader who made people believe in a brighter future. Swiftpaw was fiesty and desperate to prove himself. The better characterized, the more profound the loss usually is.

If this is a female character who is dying just to serve the plot, be aware of cultural bias and tropes. How is the gender ratio looking in your cast? Is this happening disproportionately with your girls?

Note how Quiet Rain's litter had both a boy and a girl, but the girl was chosen to be "weaker" and wither away.

And how most of the time in DOTC, whenever a man had to be upset, a girl would get killed for it.

If you ever feel like the character on the chopping block is NOT a full character, ask yourself why it needs to be a character at all. You don't need to spend narrative time building out someone when a literal object of high value might suffice.

"My sister died when I swore to protect her and I can't face my family" = Old. Tired. Ive seen this.

"I lost my heirloom sword when I swore to protect it and I can't face my family." = Fascinating. Why was the sword so valuable? Will they really not take you back? How did you lose it?

When you do kill off "high value" characters, try to make sure you're not leaving too many plot threads hanging. Or at least make a point of how they will never get closure.

Crystal Archives

I've heard off and on some want for a communal profile collection, a place to post stories, and find events all under one roof since the old RPC went down. Chaos had created their own replacement but was very local to their own data-center. That same group has been building a version for the Crystal data-center at https://crystalarchives.org/

There is also a Dalamud mod for viewing this profile information in game not unlike the early days of TRP on WoW.

While the site has been up for a while, it now also imports the roleplay events from the FFXIV RP Event Calendar, giving another easy way to keep up with what is happening when.

Kinship FOB Helios

"I'm just...concerned, sir." Colonel Bell said to her superior, Commander Owen McEvedy as the two walk down the hallway in the Kinship FOB medical wing.

"About what, Colonel?" He asks. He's in a good mood, all things considered. Not only has the Commanding General had delivered not only one of his people hge thought dead, but also, a great deal of good and...interesting news.

"...about Elenor, sir." she says, the taller raptor woman stopping infront of a closed door.

"Doc's say she'll recover fully. And Melissa mentioned that the SLDF has resources to help with the other scars." he says, stopping by her. "You worry too much." He says with a smile.

Bell blushes slightly.

"Eh, really should get a move on with that..." he thinks, remembering his conversation with Melissa earlier.

"Be that as it may, sir...I have concerns about what will occur should any of the clan based systems pick up on her...or indeed, any of our genetics." She look pointedly at Owen when she says this.

"Ah, that..." He says. She has a point. While Melissa at least...and others...are supportive, others might not be. Still, having a Commanding General in your corner counted for a great deal.

"...I don't know...maybe the word "Wolverine" won't be a dirty word someday."

Bell cocks her head slightly, confused. "Again, be that as it may...I am still concerned about what will happen if some of the more...zealous groups find out."

"I'll handle it, if it comes to that..." He says, reassuringly. "Besides, who's gonna know?"

"...I suppose you are correct, sir."

He smiles, and reaches out and pats her arm. "Like I said, you worry too much." he says, more softly. "Now come on, got some things I need to talk to you about."

The two begin to walk away.

okay twst theory: i was talking to my sister last night (the one who introduced me to twst) and she told me about the theory that the last book will be yuu & grim combining plus overblotting. Which made me think of why ramshackle was created in the first place. Each dorm was made for each of the great seven, so why was there an extra dorm? Which made me imagine what if overblotted yuu& grim become whatever villain used to inspire ramshackle?

Of course I don't know what villain would be or why they aren't part of the great seven anymore, but I thought it was a fun thing to think about. If anyone else has anything to add or even refute my theory lmk! :D

(I have recently started the game and have only finished book 1 so try not to give any spoilers!)
