          she  hadn’t  heard  him  get  up,  honey  eyes  cutting  back  at him,  squinting  in  an  attempt  to  see  him  through  the  dark.  sure  enough,  there,  illuminated  in  the  lantern  light  was  arthur.

          “ real  observant,  ain't  you,  arthur ? ”  she  rasped  with  a  teasing  lilt.  she  let  her  words  linger  for  a  moment  before  she  sighed  and  looked  ahead  of  herself  again,  down  to  the  river  below.

          “ ain’t  got  much  want  to, ”  she  admitted,  voice  noticeably  softer.  “ figured  it  didn’t  do  much  good  to  toss  and  turn  all  night,  anyhow. ”  while  it  had  gotten  easier  for  her  to  go  about  her  daily  life  after  the  passing  of  her  husband,  she  still  had  those  nights  where  the  nightmares  kept  coming  and  she  didn’t  know  peace  of  mind.  so,  she’d  sit  and  look  at  the  stars  until  the  sun  rose,  usually  alone,  but  she  found  that  she  didn’t  mind  arthur’s  company  this  time.

          sadie had heard that one before--more times than she might’ve cared to, in all honesty. people looked down their noses at her, unaware that she would have no problem in cutting off said nose and feeding it to them.

          though she supposed it could work in her favor, too. if someone underestimated her, she’d have a better chance at getting the upper hand.

          wiping the sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, she turns to look at him, before responding, “ ain’t you ever heard of not judgin’ a book by it’s cover? ”

          she leaned herself against the blackwater saloon, having walked in with john, deciding to celebrate a well completed bounty. it had been her treat, a small token of thanks to john for his help in bringing down yet another asshole man who thought he was above the law.

          she downs her shot of whiskey before turning to look at john in mild surprise at his offer. a light, slightly teasing smile tugs at her lips before she’s responding, “ an' here i thought you was tryin’ t’ save all your money t’ pay off that loan t’ th’ bank. ”

          not that she would complain about a free drink, of course.
