Mahsuri "Suri" Hasan RP Promo
Tumblr media
FC: Danai Gurira
Age: 29
Visual info: Brown dreadlocked hair, brown eyes, scars on her wrists from a run in with pirates. Carries a shoulder bag with her main deck in it.
Occupation: Tarot Reader, "Seer"
Negative Traits: Controlling, mischievous, fanatical, gossipy
Positive traits: Patient, wise, hospitable, philosophical
Family: Hadiah Hasan (Mother, alive), Tuah Hasan (Father, deceased)
Mahsuri's mother read palms, her grandmother read tea leaves, great-grandmother read with a pendulum. She has no doubt that there is power somewhere in her, a power that she harnesses with cards. She found her first deck on the beach, half buried in sand. She was meant to find it.
Suri respects Hoyt for what he is, but she resents Vaas for switching sides. She thinks he went against the balance, sending the island into a period of lawless chaos. She blames him for all the recently dead pirates and Rakyat alike.
Her #1 rule is 'Respect the Balance'. She is a diehard fanatic of Citra, she believes Citra is the return of a Goddess. However she knows why Volker is here. There is a method to the madness, all laid out in the grand plan. The spirits that speak to Suri, tell her what she needs to know, but they won't tell her why. They protect her from death, but wounds teach, she is not invulnerable.

THE LIFE, ACCUSATION AND DEATH OF MAHSURI ; Falsehood, Innocence, and What her Curse Meant for Langkawi
POST 1/5 - We explore what's probably been one of my favourite Malaysian folk tales - or should I say, legends - growing up, discussing the reality of the curse she placed on all of Langkawi and the major role her flawless innocence served to play throughout it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the reign of Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah III, in Kampung Mawar, Mukim Ulu Melaka, Langkawi, a married couple by the names of Pandak Mayah and Endak Alang (Cik Alang) were blessed with the arrival of a beautiful daughter, by the name of Mahsuri binti Pandak Mayah.
She grew up with a rich understanding of her culture's beliefs and morals, and was quite different from the rest of her friends and playmates in her younger years, bearing a beautiful face and polite manners. In adulthood, her looks and kind heart only shone through even more, making her the talk of the town amongst practically all of Langkawi, with every man in the island practically clamoring to play the role of her suitor. Eventually, she was married to a young warrior named Wan Derus, the son of Wan Yahya, the village chief.
Around 1803-1843, under the reign of Sultan Abdul Halim Shah II Ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ziyauddin Mukarram Shah, relations between Kedah and Siam (now Thailand) became strained, forcing Wan Derus to leave Langkawi temporarily to fight against Siamese soldiers in Kuala Kedah (according to some sources), leaving a pregnant Mahsuri to live with her parents in his absence. At the time, a traveling poet named Deramang made his rounds to Langkawi, and sought refuge in her parents' home thanks to their courtesy, teaching Mahsuri about poetry during his stay. The two soon became good friends.
His way with words and Mahsuri's reputation invoked the jealousy of Wan Mahura (the village chief's wife). She used the birth of Mahsuri and Wan Derus's child, Wan Hakim, to her advantage to spread rumors and accuse her and Deramang of engaging in an affair. The two were apprehended and punished by Wan Yahya (Mahsuri's now-brother-in-law) and brought to the center of Langkawi at the time, Pulau Matsirat, where they would be executed.
Despite repeatedly begging for mercy, Mahsuri was tied to a tree and stabbed repeatedly with spears, but all of them only fell at her feet. Eventually, believing that only her death would appease them, she resorted to telling them that she could only be killed with her family's sacred keris (a traditional Malay dagger). When she was stabbed, the blood that flowed from her wound was not the usual red, but pure white, signifying her innocence. In the last moments of her life, she made her last stand, and for the injustice they had brought upon the land, she cursed Langkawi for the next seven generations.
Tumblr media
One thing I'm not too certain of in my retelling of this story is if whether Wan Yahya is Wan Derus's older brother or son. Some sources I made use of suggest the former rather than the latter, some vice versa, but it doesn't really matter since it doesn't change the story in any way.
It's important to note that the courteous, perfect Mary Sue trope that Mahsuri takes on in the legend plays a significant role in the rumors spread by Wan Mahura. Most versions of the reason behind the treachery, including mine, suggest that Wan Mahura was jealous of Mahsuri's beauty and popularity, while others imply that Wan Yahya initiated it, being enamoured by Mahsuri and wanting to use her husband's absence to his advantage. Nevertheless, Wan Mahura remains the main aggressor of the conflict.
At this point, I'm sure you all are curious about the curse, and let me tell you: the curse does have some elements of truth to it. Soon after Mahsuri's death, Langkawi was attacked by Siam, forcing the villagers to burn their rice fields to take control of the situation, but Siam still managed to conquer, leading to decades of failed crops and constant invasions. The villagers remained under the impression that this was all part of Mahsuri's curse.
It is during the 20th century that the seven generations affected finally came to pass, and since then, Mahsuri's descendants living in Thailand have visited her tomb in Langkawi on occasion.
Tumblr media
At the time in which the legend was thought to take place, adultery stood as a sin punishable by death, though themes of polygamy are also present in some versions where Mahsuri is portrayed as Wan Derus's second wife.
Furthermore, the strong beliefs of every citizen of the village and how convinced they were, having been swayed by Wan Mahura's lies, serve to represent patriarchal authority, slander, and injustice present within Malay communities in the past. This point in the story also serves to portray the close connections between citizens in spreading false allegations like wildfire, but the story's conclusion essentially delivers the message that whatever goes around comes around eventually.

Art Hub Final Project for my Interior Design 3 class.
The pictures in this post are of the first two presentation boards and the material board.
Here is the link of all four presentation boards and the full resolution picture of the material board.
I was grouped with two of my classmates. We were given the plans for the Zhongshan Building in Kuala Lumpur, and were tasked with choosing a Malaysian folktale to base our concept on.
We chose Mahsuri, a beautiful maiden who she moved to Langkawi from Siam in search of greener pastures. She had a husband who went to war. While he was gone, there were villagers who were jealous of Mahsuri’s beauty, and started a rumour that she was unfaithful. They conspired to kill her for her alleged infidelity. The methods they chose to kill her didn’t work, and Mahsuri told them to use her family’s keris to do so. They stabbed her with it, and instead of red, her blood ran white. In her last breath, she cursed Langkawi to have 7 generations of bad luck.
From that, my friends and I came up with Gossip as our concept, as that was what the villagers did. We decided to create a boardgame cafe that has pockets of seating where patrons can gossip while playing and eating. The bar area in the front of the space was created in so customers would be able to people-watch the people outside of the cafe.
Our colour scheme has both warm and cool colours. In the plan, it is shown that the inner spaces are colourful, and the exterior spaces (including the washrooms) are monotone, a decision made by my friends and I when we realised that the there is more to the truth that what is rumoured.
The style we chose was a cross between Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian. The courtyard is almost entirely concrete, with the exception of metal chairs and greenery.
Zhongshan Building: Jalan Kampung Attap, 80 - 84, Jalan Rotan, 50460 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan

Odds and Ends:
LUMINOUS AQUATIC WHEELS
On the clear night of May 15, 1879, Commander J.E. Pringle and the crew of HMS Vulture, while in the Persian Gulf, observed a pair of "giant luminous wheels,” over forty yards in diameter, spinning above the water's surface. They were turning in opposite directions at seventy-five rotations per minute. From the mizzen top, it could be seen that the phosphorescent wheels were traveling parallel and sinking into the water, lighting up the bottoms of the quarter boats as they passed under the boat. The spectacle lasted just over half an hour.
In May 1880, Captain Avern and his third officer aboard the British East India Company steamer, the Patna, had a similar experience. Near 11:30 p.m., on a dark night, enormous luminous wheels appeared on either side of the ship; each wheel contained sixteen spokes 250 yards long and were clearly visible all the way around. The spinning circles seemed to touch the ship's side and escorted the vessel for more than fifteen minutes.
In May 1983, Chief Officer P. Newton, commanding the MV Mahsuri, was navigating through the Gulf of Oman when a luminous green shimmer appeared on the horizon. The glow became parallel bands of blue-green light, five yards wide and over 150 yards long. The bands then expanded into horizontal circles spinning just above the water. Astonished, Newton watched silently, wrestling with the feeling that he should duck as a randomly flashing light show surrounded the vessel. Pale green and gold bands continually changed into wheels and disappeared unpredictably off in the distance, only to be replaced with another set. The ship seemed to be accompanied by the center of the circles until it crossed a distinct, but undefined barrier.

"i suppose there is a lot of similarities when it comes to potions and cooking or medicine. i've had a lot of trial and error when it comes to developing a new potion but what i put it in it all depends on what i want it to do. and the intentions i have behind it. there have been a number that have not worked out in my favour over my years," suri replied, keeping a gentle smile. "it's hard to make something go against nature. it's a natural process for herbs to go bad such as with mortals," mahsuri remarked, thinking of her own forbidden powers. "i'm sure there are those that have tried but manipulating something last longer than it should is not something i would toil with."
"I'll be sure to mark that down on my list," he repeated with a small nod, smiling back. "I've never said it aloud, but I've always been curious about potions, and how one figures out what goes with what, but I suppose similar can be said about medicine and food. That sounds quite similar to what we do over at the farm. I'm surprised there isn't a spell to prevent that yet, or is there and I just haven't heard of it?"

Note
For mythological or legendary figures LW should add to Housamo, I remember watching this film called Magika. The protagonists were transported via an abandoned well to the eponymous world, inspired by Malay legends and folklore. It has Badang, Hang Tuah and his comrades, Pak Pandir, the Princess of Mount Ophir, Awang Kenit, Bawang Putih Bawang Merah, Mahsuri, the Dragon of Chini Lake and many more. Though I fear they would fuck them up like how they did with Macan and Barong, and Type-Moon with the Trung Sisters.
Oo interesting! And for the last part you're right I mean one is a vore lover and the other is a dancer with the entertainers who I hate

Tumblr media
Suri shuffles her cards, pressing the two piles together to mix them. She raises the deck and uses her free hand to swipe a spec off her purple table cloth.
"They are arrogant." She grumbles, leaning over the table to emphasize her point. She glances from side to side, as if to make sure no one was around to hear. It must be a habit, there's no one else in the room. "I heard a few of them come up here. Pretend to be pirates." She speaks in a hushed tone. Eden's brow furrows, eyes widening in disbelief.
"No." She turns away, giving Suri the side eye.
"Yes!" Suri exclaims, arms out in front of her. "They wear your clothes and eat your food!" She drops her knuckles on the table to punctuate. Eden is sure she'd recognize them. But, then again, she saw that pirate with the mullet/goatee combo twice and never again. Never heard anything about him dying. He could've been one of them. Suri shakes her head while chuckling, knocking twice on the cards before dropping them into three piles between them. "Pile them up." She leans back in her chair, still grinning. Eden nods as she reaches for the leftmost one, dropping it onto the rightmost with the middle on the bottom.
She knows the drill at this point. She was reluctant to participate in the first reading, thinking Mahsuri might be connecting to the devil, but, as Suri explains it, 'Everyone has someone looking after them. I just ask mine to ask yours what they want you to know.' The first one was so accurate, she kept coming back for more. It helps that the company is nice. Suri never lets silence hang, she appreciates that. Eden places the new pile in the center of the table.
"I don't see them often, but they're always so rude when I do. I asked one to help me move boxes once, he thought I was asking for a cigarette and told me to get back to work." She frowns at the memory, unable to remember how the interaction ended. Suri laughs loudly, slapping her hand onto the cards to pick them up. She pauses her laughter to blow on the cards, flipping them onto the table one at a time with practiced ease.
"Okay," She starts, trying to tamp down her giggles. "You've got good energy here. A lot of forward momentum." She adjusts the cards delicately, making small movements to line them up perfectly. The action helps her focus. "It looks like your friend might fall into some trouble." She rests her thumb on card with a sword-wielding knight on it, pointer and middle landing on another with three swords slicing through a heart.
"When is Hayes not in trouble." Eden shrugs, grinning when the comment makes Suri giggle again.
"He does it to himself." Eden nods. He does. Suri clears her throat, getting back to the reading. "There's a choice here." She gestures in a swirling motion over a card with six cups, each holding their own luxury. Her attention turns to a queen, one with a sword in her hand. Suri raises another card, one with two swords crossed over one another and places it horizontally over the queen. "There's a dark haired woman in your life. She is...Difficult for you. Don't let this distract you." Suri doesn't look up, gaze bouncing between the cards. She picks up another face card before Eden can decipher what the last message may mean. "Another woman is here. She is very kind. Soft. Like a baby bird." This card lays over one with someone crying in bed, nine swords hung over them. "She is going to change what you know, let this happen. God wills it."
Suri changes her terms to make more sense to Eden. Where she would normally say, your guides, ancestors or spirits, she says God. It builds a bridge in their communication, allowing for the two to get closer.
"You don't have a lot of you here, Eddie. This doesn't look like a time for you. I know you're used to it, but it cannot last forever. You'll grow out of it eventually." Suri reaches over the table to grab Eden's hands, a physical connection to better feel the energy within her. Eden flinches at first, but places her trust in the Seer. The pirate vibrates with nervous energy, both from the contact and prediction. She doesn't know what Suri means by grow out of it. Eden doesn't focus on herself. That's a simple fact of her life. Suri sighs, feeling the others unease. "Do not let what I've told you change your mind. You will walk down the path you are meant to, you will become the person you need to be." She gives a gentle squeeze before backing off. Her hands return to the table. "There isn't much else. Something here about an unexpected visitor, but no details."
Eden nods along. She tries to take in the information objectively, but it's going to take a lot of late-night thinking to decipher how it all makes her feel. Oh well, she can use the extra time to help Hayes with whatever he fucked up this time.

BLOG INTRODUCTION ; Silhouette of Legends
Hello all! My name is Arinna, and welcome to the Silhouette of Legends blog. As you might be able to tell, this blog is part of a project for academic purposes; namely, a project in which I aim to introduce popular Malay folk tales, carefully dissecting stories along the way to discuss their social and cultural implications within Malaysia, and how they aim to represent the idea of "identity through culture." This blog will feature a total of five posts made to introduce and explore the cultural themes within five Malay folk tales, which are as follows: - Mahsuri - Hikayat Hang Tuah - Puteri Gunung Ledang - Puteri Santubong & Puteri Sejinjang - A personal family legend of mine, originating from Pulau Pangkor Please note that following the completion of these five posts, this blog will become inactive indefinitely, as by then, the project will have been completed. Thanks for reading, and look forward to the engaging discussions soon to come!
