Lasers in dentistry are used as a treatment tool or as an adjunct tool. By using the laser in the field of dentistry, the main goal is to overcome the disadvantages, which are currently being experienced in conventional dental treatment procedures. Many specialties in dentistry including oral surgery, implants, oral medicine, periodontics, pediatrics, and operative use the current new laser technology. The ability of lasers to provide minimally invasive procedures with less discomfort to the patient has been useful in the patient delivery system in dental practice. This article describes in brief on the uses of lasers in oral mucosal lesions. Keywords: Laser dentistry; Oral mucosal lesions; Dental lasers. *Correspondence to Alexander Maninagat Luke, Assistant Professor, Department Of Surgical Sciences, College of Dentistry, Ajman University, P.O.Box 346, University Street, Al Jurf, Ajman United Arab Emirates. When a beam of light passes through a specific medium causing stimulation of the atoms within the medium to transfer the light in a specific direction, that is, the same direction as the medium by the same wavelength as that of the original beam, a laser beam is created. Lasers are capable of increasing light intensity to synthesize beams of an effective wavelength, which are directional and of a high intensity1 . Albert’s theory of spontaneous & simulated emission of radiation describes three characteristic features of lasers as follows: monochromatic, i.e. all the waves have the same energy and frequency; coherent, which describes all the waves of light to be in phases related to each other in speed and time; and collimated ensuring parallelism of the waves (low beam divergence).2 History of Lasers “Heliotherapy” was the practice followed by our ancestors, following which the development of action therapy and photomedicine took place. The award of the Nobel Prize to Finsen in 1903 for the development of the carbon arc lamp with lenses and filters for the treatment of diseases (especially lupus vulgaris) was a major milestone in the development of lasers for medical use. Leon Goldman, a pioneer in laser medicine, have reported the biomedical aspects of lasers and have also recorded findings in laser dentistry, mainly on the effects of lasers on dental caries, teeth and other tissues since 1963.1 In 1917, Albert Einstein set the foundation for the invention of the laser by explaining the photoelectric amplification, and it was introduced to the public in 1959.3 Miaman was the first person who used the laser in 1960 on the hard and soft tissue. Advancements in the application of lasers over the last two decades have extended their use in caries prevention, bleaching, cavity preparation, dentinal hyper-sensitivity, growth modulation as well as for diagnostic purposes. In the soft tissue, it has been used in wound healing, the removal of hyperplastic tissue to uncover impacted or partially erupted tooth, photodynamic therapy of malignancies, and photostimulation of herpetic lesion. It has been discovered that lasers have increased the efficiency, specificity, ease, cost, and comfort of dental treatment.4 In the early 1960s, it was noted the use of medical lasers in dental applications had limited application. In the early decades, the physicians realized that the light allowed them to observe many things such as skin color and wounds, and it helps them in choosing the most effective therapeutic course of action. This led researchers to explore the specific applications of lasers in the medical and dental fields.1 Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences Volume 10, Number 4, Autumn 2019 325 Applications of Lasers in Oral Medicine In the mid-1960s, enhanced methods of caries removal were reported, performed by an effective interaction of laser energy with tooth structure. Ruby lasers were very useful in vaporizing caries but they caused irreversible necrotic changes in the pulp tissue because of the high energy densities. Then, the Erbium Laser wavelengths were discovered, which did better in terms of the cavity preparation without damaging the pulpal tissue. Argon lasers were found to be effective in the photopolymerization of dental composites and Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) lasers were effective in various endodontic therapies, prosthetic devices, gold alloys, and prosthetic devices.5 In 1990, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of laser therapy in intraoral gingival and mucosal tissue surgery as it ensured a wound without suture, pain, and bleeding and increased the convenience for the dentist. The first laser designed specifically for the dentistry was introduced in the United States on May 3, 1990, by Myers. Among the various special lasers designed to be used for soft tissue procedures and for the teeth and bone, it has been seen that the erbium wavelength is very safe and effective. Lasers, either in therapeutic or photobimodulation, have shown effective results in healing. The first clinical results of photo-activated disinfection also showed good applications for disease control.3 Classification of Lasers Lasers in dentistry can be classified according to various factors, including the lasers active medium such as gas, liquid, solid and semi-conductor, which specifies the type of laser beam that will be emitted (Table 1). Invariably they can be also classified according to the lasing medium used as a gas laser and a solid laser. Furthermore, they can be classified according to tissue applicability in hard and soft tissue lasers or according to the wavelengths and the risk associated with laser application.4 The first gas laser was the helium neon laser which was promoted by a green wavelength and several infrared wavelengths. Carbon dioxide, NdYAG, and Er:YAG (erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) categorised as Hard lasers can be used for both hard and soft tissue application but they have limitations as they are expensive and cause thermal injury to the tooth pulp. Cold lasers, also known as soft lasers, which are based on the diode device are compact and have low costs. These are commonly termed as low-level laser therapy (LLLT). The mixture of some noble gases such as argon, krypton, and xenon with reactive gases produce a special type of gas discharge which is called the excimer laser. One of the most powerful lasers is the carbon dioxide laser which transfers energy to CO2 molecule; this may convert electric power to laser output power. Neodymium has shown increased efficiency in laser species, when mixed with either yttrium-aluminium-garnet (YAG) or glass materials.6 The carbon dioxide laser is hydrophilic, has rapid soft tissue removal and haemostasis with shallow depth penetration and has maximum absorbency, although its bulkiness, high cost and destruction of hard tissue are to its disadvantages. Besides having good haemostasis, the Nd:YAG laser is highly absorbed by the pigmented tissue, keeping it very effective in surgical cutting and coagulation of the soft tissue. Moreover, it has been recorded that it can be used in periodontal disease control.4 The erbium laser has two wavelengths, the Er,Cr:YSGG (yttrium scandium gallium garnet) laser and the Er:YAG laser. The high affinity for hydroxyapatite and the highest absorption of water render it the best choice for treatment of hard tissues as well as soft tissue ablation that has a high percentage of water. The diode laser is primarily absorbed by tissue pigment and haemoglobin. On the other hand, it is poorly absorbed by hydroxyapatite and water. Hence, it has been used in aesthetic gingival recontouring, the removal of inflamed and hypertrophic tissue, soft tissue crown lengthening, frenectomies and photo-stimulation of aphthous, and herpetic lesions.4 LLLT is a recently developed technique with applications in medicine, dentistry, and physiotherapy. It can offer such therapeutic effects as accelerated wound healing and pain relief to patients. It is the application of laser light energy to living tissues to generate biosimulation effects without causing an excessive rise in temperature. The primary benefit is that it is a non-surgical technique, which will reduce the incidence of oedema and inflammations. The helium neon or cold lasers are applied to the tissues in continuous wave emission with a non-contact mode to generate the bio simulative effect. Improvement in wound healing, remodelling, and repair of bone, restoration of neural functions post injury and promotion of modulation of immune systems and nociceptive signals are the advantages associated with the use of soft lasers.1 LLLT has established itself well in clinical dentistry, attributed to the therapeutic effects like bio stimulation, regenerative capacity and anti-inflammatory effects seen at the lower heat. The diode laser has a wavelength range of 635 to 950 nm utilizing flexible quartz fibre and it is absorbed by the pigmentation of the soft tissue and has Table 1. Classification of Lasers Gas lasers Liquid Solid Semiconductor Excimers -Argon -Carbon-dioxide -Dyes - NdYAG - Er:YAG -Diode -Hybrid silicon laser -Argon-fluoride -Krypto-fluoride -Xenon-fluoride Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 Luke et al 326 Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences Volume 10, Number 4, Autumn 2019 good haemostatic agent, the power output of which is 2 to 10 W.2 In surgical third molar extractions, LLLT regulates the inflammatory process causing lesser or no side effects by the reduction in pain and swelling and by the repair of destructed tissues because these complications are common in all patients after the removal of the third molar. It has shown the benefits in postoperative symptoms of impaction. LLLT nowadays is being used for many types of disorders. Recently, there has been a surge in the randomised controlled trials which focus on the effect of LLLT on various factors like wound healing, scarring, temporomandibular joint problems, oral mucositis, and dental pain. Other types were the argon ion and the krypton ion which have provided a lot of visible and ultraviolet laser wavelengths.7 LLLT has absolute contraindications in patients with coagulation disorders because it has a direct effect on blood flow and in cases of malignancies because it stimulates cell growth. The FDA classifies low-level lasers into low-risk devices because it is not harmful. The therapeutic laser is less than 500 mW.1 Currently, there are a lot of laser wavelengths that are used in dentistry, specifically oral surgery, including CO2 , Argon, Nd YAG, KTP that are applied in various specialties in dentistry including the caries diagnosis and removal, light curing of the composite, control of bleeding in vascular lesions. Furthermore, they have been used in the temporomandibular joint surgery, the activation of tooth bleaching solutions, and the soft tissue procedures, for example, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, excision of tumours, excision of biopsies, and second stage recovery of implants.1 Mechanism of Action The laser consists of an energy source, an active lasing medium, and two or more mirrors. In the dental laser, the light reaches the target tissue via the fiberoptic cable, hollow wave guide, focusing lenses, and cooling system.4 The Amdt–Schutz principle is the basis for the action. This means that the increase or decrease of the stimulus beyond the optimal dose will lead to weakening or absence of the effect. The optimal effect is created with the optimal dose. Accordingly, the bio stimulation effect of LLLT can be produced by optimal dose exposure to tissues in a non-contact mode. In addition, LLLT deposits sub-thermal energy within tissues, which acts on the sub-cellular component. The application of LLLT also stimulates various cells lymphocytes and mast cell which will produce anti-inflammatory actions causing changes in the capillary hydrostatic pressure which results in oedema absorption and elimination of intermediary metabolites. Even it can increase collagen production, the mitotic activity of epithelial cells and fibroblast. Moreover, it can produce an analgesic effect by inhibiting nociceptive signals.1 There are two types of beams used in dentistry, which are the visible beam like the argon laser and the invisible beam in the infrared range like the carbon dioxide laser, erbium substituted yttrium aluminium garnet, erbium chromium doped yttrium, scandium gallium garnet holmium, yttrium aluminium garnet, and gallium arsenide. There are many properties of the laser beam, especially the wavelength and optical features of the specific target tissue, which show the type and the extent of the interaction that might occur.8 The lasers used for surgical purposes emit light at specific wavelengths which have direct effects on the tissue not only on the coagulation and vaporization but also on the natural healing process of the cells. There are other kinds of lasers other than surgical lasers that are used as bio stimulators.1 There are different wavelengths which can be classified into: • the UV range (ultra-spectrum 400-700 nm) • the IR range (infrared spectrum 700 nm to microwaves spectrum) • the VIS range (visible spectrum 400-700 nm) The laser converts the electromagnetic energy to thermal energy and the wavelength depends on both design and clinical application.2 Dose Calculation To calculate the dose, the given energy will be used as mWx seconds (eg. 100 mW x 10 seconds = 1000 mJ = 1 J). The dose is calculated by dividing the energy by irradiation area. An optimum power density is important to trigger biological effects so that the low output will not be fully compensated by long exposure; and the depth of treatment target site is in consideration. Even while using the laser probe, the target tissues and the type of tissues must be taken into consideration. For example, transmission of the laser light is easier through fat and mucosa than through muscle. In addition, the haemoglobin and pigments are strong absorbers; therefore, there is a need to increase the dosage. The penetration can be advanced by using pressure moving the laser closer to the target.9 In case of acute conditions, which contain inflammation and oedema, high doses of laser energy are applied and it may require a more frequent application for resolving. In cases of chronic conditions such as paraesthesia and pain, patients are treated conservatively, with the laser application being on a weekly or twice a week basis. The effects of LLLT given on the first day will linger on the second day as well as adding a long-term build-up of inhibitory levels. In chronic conditions, a flare-up is experienced in a well-responding patient as the condition is transformed into an acute phase, which allows the healing process to begin. The number of sessions indicated for LLLT varies. In certain cases, a single visit of the therapy may suffice but in most conditions, multiple sessions are required.1 Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences Volume 10, Number 4, Autumn 2019 327 Applications of Lasers in Oral Medicine Effects of Lasers The initial clinical experimental uses of lasers in dentistry were in 1964. The otolaryngologists, periodontists, and oral surgeons were the first specialists who used medical lasers intraorally to perform surgical applications in the soft tissue. Laser surgery in the sites, which have a lot of bleeding like cheeks, the floor of mouth and tongue provides good access to and control for the surgery.3 There are many dental indications of LLLT. Anaesthesia has shown a positive effect on reducing the trauma to vessels or nerves that may be caused by the puncture of the needle in some cases. LLLT can be applied directly to the superficial mucosa before the injection, which will produce a good aesthetic effect, but it cannot be applied to the hard palate. Oedema, which is due to an increased inflammatory process depends on the lymphatic system. If LLLT is applied directly to the lymph nodes, it will reduce oedema. Widespread oedema will need high doses and multiple visits to get relieved. Pain is limited with therapeutic lasers as they reduce the velocity of nerve conduction and action potentials as well as the suppression of noxious stimulations. Initially, in acute pain, there will be a decrease in the level of PGE2 and other inflammatory markers by direct inhibition of peripheral afferent terminals which suppress peripheral sensitization and limit the releases of neurokinins. The high doses of lasers will reduce the inflammatory cells and processes, thereby reducing the pain sensations. In chronic conditions, it differs as it depends on the sensitization more than inflammation. Dental lasers are beneficial as there is an interaction of the specified area of the diseased tissue and a great reduction in the number of bacteria and pathogens with the use of lasers in the surgical field. In case of the soft tissue procedures, they achieve sufficient healing which may sometimes eliminate the use of sutures. Many researchers have seen that the effects of a laser can reduce the effects of edema because it seals the blood vessels and lymphatic channels properly.1 The light energy that is produced from the laser machine has interaction with the diseased tissue. First, by the reflection of the beam that is redirected off the surface which has no effects on the targeted tissue and if the light maintains its collimation through the narrow beam, it might become more diffuse. But this reflection may cause harm as it could be reflected onto the non-targeted tissues like the eyes; for e.g. when the CO2 lasers are using in the exposure of titanium implants, they cause a more diffuse reflection. Founded in 1959 by former auto-worker and songwriter Berry Gordy, Jr. in Detroit, Motown Records became the most successful Black-owned record label in history. After co-writing hits for Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson, he purchased a house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard and began operating Tamla Records. The home served not only as a recording studio but as label headquarters. “Hitsville USA,” would serve as Motown’s headquarters.
The first hit for Motown was Money (That’s What I Want), by Barrett Strong, co-written by Gordy. Motown signed many artists including Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Stevie Wonder. The Supremes, was the most successful Motown group and the most successful female singing group the history.
The popular Motown “sound” was questioned when performer Marvin Gaye recorded the song What’s Goin On. Gordy refused to release it because of its political lyrics which focused on the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. He relented and the song as well as an accompanying album was released. While What’s Goin On was not Motown’s highest-selling record of all time, it was acclaimed, ranking #6 on Rolling Stones’s Top 500 albums.
The label was home to choreographer Cholly Atkins as well as Maxine Powell who ran Motown Finishing School. Motown was home to many talented musicians such as The Funk Brothers and the songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland. The Funk Brothers, featuring notables such as Benny Benjamin on drums and James Jamerson on bass would serve as backing band for many Motown hits, and helped create the “Motown sound.”
Motown moved its offices to Los Angeles. Motown continued to release hit records by a new generation of artists including The Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie. Gordy was forced to sell Motown Records to MCA in 1988 for 61 million dollars. Motown continues under its name to release albums by artists such as Erykah Badu and Brian McKnight.
Gordy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and would be joined by the songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

AHEPA 192 IV will be a three-story, 90-unit affordable senior housing community located on 4.4 acres of the old Southridge Mall site. It will be the fifth Des Moines-area affordable senior housing community managed by ASL and administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 202 program.
According to Beck, AHEPA 192 Phase IV is the first HUD 202 community ASL is constructing since HUD began funding capital advances for new 202s in earnest a few years ago.
AHEPA 192 IV is a $22 million project. Its financing is comprised of a $8.9 million HUD Section 202 capital advance, a $6 million low-income housing tax credit allocation, a $1.25 million Polk County Housing Trust Fund award, and a HUD 223(f) mortgage loan.
“The need for affordable housing, especially for very low-income seniors, is great, and in the Des Moines area, each of our four existing communities has a waitlist,” Beck said. “We are excited and proud to be able to help seniors in need of safe and dignified housing with 90 new units thanks to our financing partners and the support we have received from the City of Des Moines, Polk County Housing Trust Fund, and HUD, and special thanks to our development team.”
ASL also manages AHEPA 192 Phase I Apartments in Johnston; AHEPA 192 Phases II and III Apartments, and Penelope 38 Apartments, in Ankeny. These four communities total 196 units.
AHEPA Senior Living affordable independent living communities offer very low-income older adults, 62 and over, residential apartment-home living with the voluntary supportive services they may need to continue to live independently as they age. Through service coordination, the services may include meal services, case management, transportation assistance, public benefits programs enrollment assistance, fitness and wellness programs, housekeeping assistance, and health services. As HUD Section 202 developments, they are subsidized and provide rental assistance for very low-income seniors.

WE THE NORTH WEEK 2K21 - DAY 006
↬ innovation = haley ↫
i picked this early on and then i thought i wasn't thinking about this right and then i realized i was and so i came back to this. i did not fit all of @charlieweasleyy's characters on here because i could barely fit the four. have you ever noticed how muscians suck in the image department, no? just me? okay then. moving on
*barney stintson voice* have you met haley? i'm sure you have because she's everywhere and she's friendly and lovely and honestly one of the best people (even tho she got me in a lot of trouble this week). i thought about putting haley for relevance a time or two while i was struggling with that prompt BUT i feel like she paves the way which lead me back to keeping her characters in this position. buckle up bc this is going to get long again.
lets get this party started (haley can correct me on anything i say that's not accurate)
James was one of my first favourite characters on the site, which everyone knows because you've heard me gush about him every appreciate week in june since i joined and prob at any given moment elsewhere. and i love what haley is doing with him, the story that she's telling with him, the way he's changing and the way he's seeing the world is evolving and its not because of the fact that he's married to prudence. but its because of the way the world sees and treats him, some times its got me cheering while reading and other times i feel incredibly sad about it. he's not the only black character on the site but he's the most involved in the social issues (i could be wrong and if i am, apologies) and i am excited to be joining haley with that. everyone got their characters involved in BLM last year, but since that moment i've heard haley talk about how she wants to keep doing things like that with james. i've wanted an activist character for a while now (i get that itch specifically around june yearly because of a show i watch every june) and i felt like james' estrange cousin was my best opportunity.
Then there is Hakim, who admitted i wasn't as aware of (as well as i could have been) until i made his sister Pari. and haley came at me with all these thoughts and head canons of the family and everything that she'd thought about with hakim which, i played myself because i love this character so much more now and all he does is hurt me. she popped into a group chat of the siblings and proposed a ramadan thread idea and then another but followed it up with like 1298742190 other links so that we could be informed while we were writing it. those links came in during the span it took me to find a single article. and it helped me flesh out pari a bit more and figure out how i wanted to shape her as a mix of tradition beliefs and non traditional. i just love this family and he's one of my favourite characters to read.
Mitch is a character i know i would struggle with, that rang true more so when we were not a site in canada. (idk if you've all seen my little breakdown about the *voices in your head* concept but sometimes separating me from characters isn't always easy. ) but she does it with such grace and respect, mitch could be seen as just a one dimensional character because we all seem to just write off conservatives. not to mention haley made a cop during the current climate. while i think that is valid at times, political stance doesn't always equal personality or mean that a person embodies everything of that political party (maybe its a privilege of living in canada where our conservatives are progressive idk dont @ me, let me gush in peace) and i think that's well represented in mitch. he has his beliefs, he has put his foot in his mouth and he married someone that can call him out when needed. but he's such a good person despite in his faults or in spite of them. the way haley approaches him is lovely. i can't wait to see the growth with mitch over the next few years, some of what i know, others which i don't which is always exciting to see unfold.
Sierra, i've loved them for a while like love love loved them and i could not think of ways to get plots with them that would span more than a thread and i was frustrated. one day we will get a ship (i tried with sierra but alas the stars did not align but that's okay) having them become part of tez's little crew has been one of my favourite things, i love the dynamic between them. but i did have a brief moment in 2040 where i had a friends to lovers sort of ship with sadie who was trans and haley didn't even think about it, like it was just a natural decision for her. which is the way it should be. so i was not at all surprised when sierra became non binary in like six hours of the news breaking and how haley just went about that whole process in a day. and i haven't been able to stop thinking about it and how its got me thinking about something similar.
a lot of things i've seen in haley's writing has inspired me to be more like haley. to take more chances. i wish i could think like her so i think my goal for year six is going to be simple. i'm going to approach it with:
WWHD?
what would haley do, and then act accordingly. but i think she's always going to be at the forefront of innovative ideas on the site and i love to see it. even more, i'm glad i get to be part of it at times. that was a lot, thanks for coming to my "all about haley" talk.

'Falling' - Regulus Black x Original Female Character (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Description: Sometimes the most unexpected friendships become the ones that mean the most. This was true for Lilia Arianwen Llewellyn and Regulus Black. A pureblood Slytherin from a noble family and a half-blood Gryffindor who's wizard father fell for a muggle. After maintaining a secret friendship from their third year which began to fade at the end of their fifth year, the pairs return to Hogwarts for their penultimate year will change their lives forever.
Warnings: Swearing,Smoking, Angst, Discrimination against muggleborns & half bloods, tiny mention of bullying, Regulus being mean.
-
The first night of term was always my favourite. The atmosphere was always electric, everyone still high on the buzz of summer mixed with the thrill of getting to see all your friends again.
I proudly took my seat at the Gryffindor table, exchanging greetings with the students surrounding. Sat on the opposite bench, slightly down from me, sat Sirius Black. Elder brother to my ex secret best friend. Sirius, and his three other friends the Marauders - consisting of James Potter, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew - had always been kind to me and we'd formed a sort of friendship despite not being super close. Sirius flashed me his infamous cheeky grin as I took my seat, in return I gave him a small little wave. Once in my seat I quickly scanned the Slytherin table, hoping for a glimpse of Regulus. I always made sure to sit this side so I could look out for him.
As my eyes wandered between each end of the table, I finally managed to spot him. Bloody hell, he'd changed even more over the summer. It was nothing extremely different or a particular feature that you could point it. He looked like he had continued to grow, his face more chiseled than when I had last saw him. He looked good. Even from across the other side of the room I could sense an aura of confidence surrounding him. This was likely due to the female attention he had received during the last school year or probably the attention he was currently getting from the group of girls sat next to him. I gritted my teeth as I watched the girls flutter their lashes at him and laugh at whatever he was saying. Doubt it was that funny calm down, I thought to myself before tearing my gaze away.
Not to judge a book by its cover, but I was adamant you could always tell what house someone would be in just by looking at them. I was so adamant on this that every year I made a bet with my group of girls that I could guess every house right. The deal was that if I won, each girl would have to do me a favour each throughout the year and if they won I'd have to do them each a favour. I had won 3 years in a row, only ever losing the very first time I made the bet in second year. I was feeling lucky about getting my fourth consecutive win when I saw the first years flood in behind Professor McGonagall.
The sorting ceremony and feast was filled with laughter and giggles, I was on a high from winning my bet for the fourth time and enjoying being reunited with my friends. Our group consisted of me, obviously, Ruby Stevens, Clara Thompkins and Mollie McKnight. We had been friends since 1st year and all shared a dormitory together.
Once the feast was over the students began their journey to their designated common rooms. We so happened to be exiting the hall the same time as Regulus and his group. Although we rarely interacted, the look of disgust on the Slytherins face when they saw Ruby, who was a muggle born, was more than evident. I was disappointed to see Regulus wearing the same expression.
I had been aware of the Black's family values well before I'd even become friends with Regulus. They were a pureblood family who believed in blood purity. They didn't believe that magic and non-magic should mix, hating half-blood wizards or witches and despising muggle-born wizards or witches. When I became friends with Regulus we ignored the obvious reason as to why we were meeting in secret for quite some time. Looking back now, I can't even remember who or why it was brought up. Though Regulus was quite evidently the product of his upbringing, I didn't believe that he actually believed these values and that this prejudice was just due to his environment growing up. Sirius didn't believe in it which ultimately led to him being disowned by his family but you saw some of Sirius in Regulus and deep down hoped that one day he would do the same. I actually thought that the hours we had spent talking was beginning to get through to him and change his perspective. Judging by his race as Ruby walked past had proved me wrong.
As I slipped past Regulus on the way through the entrance to the corridor I felt something poke into the palm of my hand. Looking down I noticed a hand holding a small piece of parchment, understanding what this was, I took it from the hand and shoved it in my robe pocket.
Once I was in the privacy of my dormitory I pulled the parchment out of my pocket and quickly read its contents. 'Usual spot at 11. R.A.B'. My stomach erupted with nerves and excitement. I knew he hadn't cut me out.
-
After what felt like hours of gossiping and catching up with the girls, everyone had finally gone to sleep. Moving extremely slowly, careful not to wake anyone, I slipped out of my bed and crept out of the dormitory.
The walk to the astronomy tower after curfew was equally as terrifying as it was thrilling. It was no shock when I finally arrived that I was the first of us there. Regulus had to travel up from the Slytherin common room which was located in the dungeons. This meant that he was usually a few minutes later than I was. The astronomy tower was my favourite place in the school for a number of reasons. Firstly the view from here was amazing, secondly I had further pursued my studies in astronomy so I spent a lot of time here, then finally because it was mine and Regulus' secret spot.
Taking a seat on the floor, I pulled my box of cigarettes from my pocket and quickly lit one using my wand. As if on queue , I heard the soft thud of footsteps ascending the stairs and then there he was, Regulus Black. I couldn't help the smile the formed on my face, betraying me of any attempt to act coy. Regulus, however, did not return the expression, his face instead wearing a frown.
'Reg is everything ok?' I whispered as I rose from my place on the floor, leaning to flick the ash of my cigarette over the edge of the tour. He watched me closely before he began to speak.
'I think its best if we don't meet up anymore Lilia' He responded coldly. He never used my full name anymore, he always called me Lil. I was taken aback by his statement, confused as to how it had come to this. 'Why?' I asked calmly despite the way my heart was pounding in my chest.
'This friendship was just us being silly and naive children' Regulus began, the same icy tone present in his voice. 'Last year and over summer I came to realise that we are just not the same and I don't wish to meet up with a blood traitor any longer, this friendship was never genuine it was just childish and ignorant'. Each word that left Regulus mouth cut into me like a dagger. I was in complete and utter shock as to what I was hearing. I didn't even know where to begin with a response so I just stood and stared in disbelief for a second.
'You think our friendship was never genuine?' The hurt and sadness was clear in my voice as Regulus continued to show zero emotion.
'I do and thats why it must come to an end' Again, I just stared at him in complete disbelief. Taking another drag of my cigarette to calm my nerves. 'So thats it then?' was all I could manage to say. I wanted to scream at him and burst out crying all at the same time, but if I did a teacher would for sure find us and I did not want Gryffindor to lose house points on the first night.
Regulus nodded his head before whispering harshly 'thats it'. I let out a breath before nodding my head and throwing the remainder of my cigarette out the window. Picking my head up and hiding any further sense of sadness, I made my way across the tower to the exit which Regulus was stood in front of.
'Thanks for wasting my time, twat' I spat at him as I barged past unable to hold it in. I managed to get down the stairs and away from him as quickly and as silent as possible.
Somehow, I managed to keep my tears in until I was safely tucked up in my bed with the curtains drawn. Raising my hand to cover my mouth, I let out a hard sob, trying my best to be remain quiet as my heart felt like it shattered into pieces.
I couldn't believe I'd spent my whole summer missing him and wondering what he was doing, whereas he was developing a hatred or disgust towards me. I also couldn't believe how much what had happened hurt, the nights interaction leaving my body in physical pain. What a shit way to start the school year.

Njinga of Ndongo - sources
If you listened to our podcast on the 17th-century African monarch Njinga of Ndongo, and you’d like to do more reading, here’s a list of the sources that I used in my research!
The only modern English biography, and source of most of my information on Njinga, is Njinga of Angola by Linda M. Heywood. It’s great if you want to know a lot about politics, but unfortunately not very detailed if you want to now about queer stuff.
If you want a short intro to Njinga, you can find a chapter on them in the book    Extraordinary Women of the Medieval and Renaissance World by Debra Barrett-Graves et al.
A slightly longer intro, also featuring the text of some of Njinga’s letter’s is in the book Afro-Latino Voices: Narratives from the Early Modern Ibero-Atlantic World by Kathryn Joy McKnight and Leo J. Garofalo.
The article Nzinga of Matamba in a new perspective by Joseph C. Miller is written in 1975, but questions some aspects of Njinga’s story which Heywood doesn’t interrograte.
For some more info on Njinga as a queer figure, I turned to online articles, including Queering History, Queering Africa, Picturing Queer Africans in the Diaspora by Leah Donella, and Nzinga Mbandi on A Gender Variant’s Who’s Who.
We also talked about the role of quimbandas (AMAB, feminine-presenting priests in Mbundu and Imbangala culture). Some info about them can be found in these articles and books:
Queen Nzinga: An African “King” to be Reckoned With by Mark Carlson-Ghost
Recreating Africa: Culture, Kinship and Religious in the African-Portuguese World by James H. Sweet
Heterosexual Africa?: The History of an Idea from the Age of Exploration to the Age of AIDS by Mark Epprecht

Dreamers Share Their Stories On Miami Musician’s Grammy-nominated Album
Struck by the plight of the "Dreamers" — young people brought illegally to the United States who are now in immigration limbo — John Daversa decided to speak out about it. He did so as best he knew how: through music. The trumpet player’s resulting 2018 album, "American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom," features 53 Dreamers representing 17 states and an equal number of birth countries performing with Daversa’s big band.
Tumblr media
"I’m a musician. That has not changed," says Daversa, who is chairman of studio music and jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. "I see the world around me, and I’m just trying to express what I feel about it.
It’s something that’s been brewing in me for a while, you know: What is the purpose? What is the meaning that I can bring to this life through music? They’re called Dreamers because of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which was introduced in 2001 but never passed by Congress. In 2012, then-President Barack Obama announced the start of DACA, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects about 800,000 undocumented young people from deportation. President Donald Trump ordered an end to DACA in 2017, but the matter is currently working its way through the courts.
Meanwhile, the Dreamers wait and worry. "I just want to introduce these human beings to everyone," says Daversa, whose grandparents immigrated to the U.S. Sicily. "These are people that are living shoulder to shoulder with us. They were brought here as children through no fault of their own. On the album, the Dreamer musicians tell their stories between songs. Response to the album has been more positive than Daversa anticipated. "I was expecting it to be more divisive," he says. But while recruiting and recording Dreamer artists across the country, Daversa found that folks were "very empathetic, very sympathetic" to the Dreamers’ precarious position. "So many people didn’t know about this issue, didn’t know it was an issue," he says.
Miami-based trumpeter Jean Caze, who was born in Haiti, is a member of Daversa’s big band. "This country is made up of a diverse fabric of different cultures," Caze says. "This diversity makes for a richer environment to live in. "Those are tricky to reimagine because they mean so much, and they mean a different thing to everyone," Daversa says. This is not the first time Daversa has successfully reworked songs everybody knows. "Kaleidoscope Eyes," his 2016 album of Beatles tunes, also received Grammy nominations. Daversa is coy about what’s next for him. He says he can’t talk about the project yet, but it "also is discussing some possibilities for social change.
Agent-artist manager and notable Tulsan Halsey has known Ripley for nearly four decades. "He was a kid when I met him you know, 18 years old or something like that," Halsey said. "When people talk about the Tulsa Sound, Steve Ripley was an important part of that, not only as a member of it and a producer of it, but as an archivist," Halsey said. One of Ripley’s most recent projects was the Leon Russell archive at the OKPOP Museum, which is set to break ground in the spring. "He was very critical in.. Leon Russell before he passed about acquiring the Leon Russell archives," OKPOP Museum’s Jeff Moore said. "And so we're working with the estate and the family and there's gonna be some exciting things coming from that. Ripley’s death, some could say, is the end of an era. "Unfortunately, you know, there's a generation of creatives now that are getting to that age," Moore said. He leaves behind a legacy so broad, Oklahomans and those who visit Tulsa will never forget.
Yob is a force to be reckoned with. They are hands down the best live band out there right now when it comes to raw performance, and this show was a pinnacle of the overwhelming amounts of times I have seen them. The energy they convey, the positivity they exude, and their ability to relate to their crowd is only matched by their always seemingly perfect performance. It was truly an honor to share the stage with them night after night, and this was one of those shows that I will never forget. Primitive Man are currently the most brutal band out there and have a tour schedule that has always been mind-blowing. I am lucky enough to call them my friends and have watched this band grow into a monster from day one. As much as I love small punk venues, it's always eye-opening to watch bands on incredible sound systems and stages.
Three of the teens accused of killing musician Kyle Yorlets in Nashville, Tenn., were evicted from a court hearing for laughing and talking, USA Today reports. The incident occurred during a juvenile court hearing in the case Thursday. According to USA Today, the teens continued laughing, talking and turning around in their seats even after their lawyers and court staffers told them to be quiet. The judge finally ordered them removed from the courtroom because of their behavior. "They’ve been sitting there like they’ve been sitting on the playground," Juvenile Court Magistrate Mike O’Neil said. Five juvenile ages 12 to 16 are accused of fatally shooting Yorlets, a Carlisle-area native, during a robbery outside his Nashville home. They are charged with criminal homicide. Yorlets, 24, was a member of the band Carverton. His slaying prompted a wave of mourning both in Nashville and central Pennsylvania.
There are only a select few individuals on Rowan University’s campus whose presence and recognizable aspects rival the Prof owl, Rowan’s mascot. Among those people is Steve Solkela, a senior vocal performance major. "This was definitely the grand finale of my time as a Rowan music major," Solkela said. However, it was no ordinary recital. Performing with Aaron Fagerstrom, a senior double major in piano performance and music industry, Solkela sang in several languages. This is a requirement of most opera recitals. His first set of songs were sung in Italian, indicated by the change of the little flag resting on the piano. After a few solo songs, Solkela then joined forces with freshman Laura Nolan in a duet to tell a story of young love. Nolan and Solkela first preformed their duet in a class called opera scenes, and then publicly at a concert last semester.
For Nolan, it was her first introduction into opera singing. "He was pretty encouraging for me to just go for it, even if I don’t know what I was doing," Nolan said. The tone (and flag) quickly changed thereafter to a set of German songs, more robust and angry sounding and marked by sharper gestures. Next came a set of songs sung in French, which touted an almost Shakespeare-esque monologue, complete with Solkela’s touch of hysterical laughing. The next set of songs were sung in his native tongue, Finnish. ], I would tap my head and mimic the wind pushing me. I didn’t really plan that, I just saw that the audience was intent and listening, and sometimes laughing at stuff.
That’s what you feel naturally when you are connecting with the audience," Solkela said. The performance rounded out with a 14-person ensemble piece called "Ballad for Americans," a piece using many Rowan students to display the hopeful message of America. "It was so hard to get us all together," Solkela said.
Tumblr media
"Like all music performances, they’re scared at the beginning. So that’s why we had dress rehearsals, so they got more confident as time went on. At the end, Solkela credits his teachers, friends, classmates, supporters and family that have supported him through the years. This summer, Solkela’s band plans to tour Finland, Florida, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota and Wisconsin. As he continues his endeavors in comedic novelty, a term he uses to describe his act as a comedian, musician and stuntman (listed on his business card). "I’ve never felt so loved and appreciated. I feel like I am such a welcomed puzzle piece to this university, and I’m going to miss the hell out of it," Solkela said.
Baroness frontman John Baizley recently had an iterview with Radioactive Mike, and talked about 2012 bus accident. Since then, everybody was curious about if any of his musician friends called him or not, and also why they didn’t packed up after that horrible crash. "I prefer not to speak for the other band members that were in our bus during that crash because everybody had a very uniquely different experience. "I particularly was struck, if you will, by that accident. I’ve got scars that won’t heal. I’ve got a seam running up to the entire length of my left arm, a ton of hardware - a bunch of things missing, a bunch of things replaced. It was really not a pleasant story from my standpoint. Also, Radioactive Mike asked if Metallica’s James Hetfield called him or not. "I did, and many since then.
Three of the five juveniles accused of killing Nashville musician Kyle Yorlets were removed from the courtroom during their hearing because the judge said he didn’t feel they were taking the severity of the case seriously. The three suspects - ages 13, 14 and 15 - appeared in juvenile court Thursday. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the suspects are 14-year-old Roniyah McKnight, 15-year-old Diamond Lewis and 16-year-old Decorrius Wright.
Tumblr media
A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy are also charged. The judge said he excused the three teens because he didn’t feel they were taking the severity of the case seriously and were treating it like it was a playground.

Analysis of Time Motion of Nursing Work in ICU, Telemetry Nursing (Moi University) Scan to open on Studocu Studocu is not sponsored or endorsed by any college or university Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 1 Article Summary Student University Course Professor Date Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 2 Article Summary: Analysis of Time Motion of Nursing Work in ICU, Telemetry, And Medical-Surgical Units The main aim of this study was to examine the time spent by nurses assessing and administering different healthcare interventions across these three units, namely, Telemetry, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Medical-Surgical units, in three different locations. The authors used an Omaha system for data gathering. The choice of the Omaha System was appropriate because of its high-level utility and holistic nature, reliable interface aptitude, interoperability, evidence-based applicability, and evaluation feature (Eardley et al., 2018). With the help of the hospital leadership, the researchers identified and grouped nurses in these three-unit types and were interviewed to assess aspects of their daily work. According to Schenk et al. (2017), the staffing in the ICU used one nurse to four patients, and the telemetry used one nurse to four patients, while the medical-surgical units used one nurse to five patients. The nurses spent most of the significant time on interventions relating to documentations amidst the medical-surgery team, 41.1%. In comparison, the ICU unit took 20.7%, and the telemetry unit took 29.7% (Schenk et al., 2017). In the telemetry unit, the nurses spent the most significant portion of work time on interventions relating to administering medication which was 14.1%. In comparison, nurses working on the medical-surgery unit were 11.1%, and the ICU unit took 6.7% (Schenk et al., 2017). Interventions related to medication administration included preparations of medications, administering medications, and intravenous sedation. The nurses spent the most significant time on patient-family teaching and counseling interventions on the medical-surgery unit, 13.0% (Schenk et al., 2017). In comparison, the telemetry unit was 10.3%, and the ICU unit took 6.8%. The patient’s family teaching and advisory interventions include Downloaded by James Mcknight ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|28323056 3 informing care planning, laboratories, conditions, medications, procedures, and nurses supporting patients and their families. The researchers found out the comparisons between the three units to be way different. The researchers performed the study in a state where there were compulsory staffing ratios which enabled the count of interventions in every patient and per the identified units (Schenk et al., 2017). The differences in the work of nurses in the three teams are not well stated. Investigations used the formalities of time motion, where few numbers have identified the different aspects in the units, not using standardized terminology (Southard et al., 2017). The investigators noted locations alongside interventions relating to the nurses on three branches of acute care utilizing hand-held gadgets and time software. The researchers planned the interventions on the Omaha system terms and analyzed the differences. Changing locations after every two minutes, the nurses averaged one intervention per minute. The researchers found that the differences in the units were in both the areas and the interventions. The inventions were related by management of cases, displaying the patient management of the nurses and coordination function. The investigators found the differences in the units in the nurse interventions plus locations among the three types of units. Using the Omaha system, they discovered the practical and feasible observational task. The work of nurses varies from team to unit, and managers have not managed to get the empirical data to make better decisions about the priorities in the work of nurses, clinical outcomes, the satisfaction of patients and staff, and the costs. 7) Chapter 16-17
One of the sections of this week’s reading I really enjoyed was “The war years”, which highlights wartime propaganda during the second world war. As America joined the Allies’ war efforts, artists and designers hired by the U.S. Office of War Information created extremely effective graphic posters and other visuals. The work of these artists and designers had a tremendous impact on the country’s mobilization and rallying efforts for both soldiers and “non-fighting” Americans. Whether it was answering the questions of “What can I do to help?” or “What’s happening in the world right now?”, these artists and designers created emotions and calls-to-action that ultimately brought the nation together more than ever before.
The country was known to have great industrial strength that could be used as an advantage. That said, by creating such posters as Carlu’s “America’s answer! Production”, Americans were encouraged to leverage their industrial might to aid in the militaristic efforts. This was clearly a call-to-action message being displayed. Both E. McKnight Kauffer’s “We Fight for the Liberty of All” and Ben Shahn’s “This is Nazi brutality” posters are meant to evoke emotional responses from the viewers. The former, generating a strong feeling of patriotism and “we’re all in this together” attitude with other Allied nations. The latter, a very powerful statement regarding the Nazi treatment of Europeans creates negative feelings towards the enemy, hopefully giving people even more of an incentive to fight for their nation’s cause.
A well-known WWII poster that I wanted to touch on is J. Howard Miller’s “We Can Do It!” The poster features an image of “Rosie the Riveter” flexing with the text “We Can Do It!” showcased at the top. Leading up to this point in time, the typical responsibilities of a woman in America were that of a housewife and what are now considered to be stereotypical. Given that most of the able-bodied men were involved as soldiers in the war, it was necessary for women to take on the responsibilities that men left behind. This poster is a message directed at females to take on these new roles. Another popular WWII poster is James Montgomery Flagg’s “I Want You”. This is clearly a poster with the purpose of persuading those maybe on the fence of enlisting in the armed forces to be a patriot. Uncle Sam is not asking but telling Americans to enlist and fight for their country.
Overall, each of these posters demonstrates the power graphic design has in creating emotion and action at the highest of levels.
