because marcus had spent ~6 years in chino, he hadn’t really gotten to be part of erica’s life until she was already reaching her teenage years. marcus was still inside when he ordered the murder of erica’s father. he was released from prison when she was 13-14 years old and to make up for lost time, he left oakland’s sergeant at arms in charge of the charter while he and obispo went to queens. this is when they spent a few months catching up, bonding, fixing juan’s car, all that good stuff. one of marcus’s biggest regrets was not being able to be there with erica when she was younger & not realizing that he needed to get her and camilla away from diego sooner. the next time marcus is in queens was for camilla’s funeral, and then again for erica’s graduation, but marcus called her every single night to make sure she was okay & make sure juan was taking care of her. following camilla’s death, marcus was named erica’s legal guardian and tried to convince her to move to oakland with him, but she was dead-set on staying with juan, and really, there is no point in arguing with a teenage girl. 

bonus headcanon for the other verse: clay and marcus had both volunteered to be escorts on a field trip that erica and tessa’s schools were going on together. this is how erica and tessa became friends and how marcus and clay were forced to start getting along for their daughters’ sake. marcus had tried his best to tell tessa to stay away from erica, but we all know that girl doesn’t listen so she made it her mission to disobey her dad and talk to erica. but the second marcus really met erica, he didn’t have it in him to tell tessa they couldn’t be friends. he loved erica like she was his own damn near immediately and clay felt the same about tessa.
