in   retrospect,   it   wasn't   fair   the   way   field's   continued   to   take   out   his   frustration   on   autumn.   it   seemed   easiest,   to   blame   the   blonde   for   these   (   apparently   )   new   jitters   and   questions   that   kept   him   tossing   and   turning   all   night.   if   he   were   brave   enough   to   be   honest   with   himself,   however,   he'd   realize   most   of   those   doubts   had   come   long   before   their   reunion.   there   was   just   never   a      real   reason   to   pay   them   much   attention.   ❝   whatever   you   say,   mother   knows   best   and   all.   ❞   can't   help   one   last   quip   back,   before   pressing   his   lips   together   with   a   nod.      ❝   i   think   i   can   manage   not   talking   to   you,   no   more   questions.   i'm   good.   ❞   and   he   manages.   for   maybe   five   minutes   of   silence,   feet   tapping,   wishing   he   had   taken   up   smoking   in   college   to   busy   himself.   more   of   a   whisper,   he   breaks   the   awkward   silence   :      ❝   she's   cute.   by   the   way.   ❞

she   wasn't   looking   for   a   fight,   but   it   seemed   as   though   fields   was   insistent   on   pushing   at   all   of   her   buttons   that   night.   why   couldn't   he   just   allow   her   an   opportunity   to   relax   and   not   feel   guilty   ?   ❝   she's   been   sleeping   through   the   night   for   a   solid   ten   hours   since   she   was   eleven   months   old.   —   i   was   younger   and   scared   when   i   made   the   decision   to   take   care   of   her   on   my   own,   fields.   looking   out   for   myself   is   one   of   the   few   things   i   actually   know   how   to   do.   —   are   you   actually   capable   of   sitting   in   silence   with   me   right   beside   you   ?   or   are   you   just   going   to   be   tempted   to   ask   me   more   questions   ?   ❞
