"something tells me you got ditched from your own plans?"

you look up from your phone, face lighting up the moment you see ao'nung. you're not sure why you're so excited to see him— considering you just saw him the day before, but you run up and hug him, his arms pulling you in tight.

"what did that idiot do?" his tone is teasing, but you're almost sure there's a hint of annoyance in there as well. you let yourself believe the cause is you being left alone.

"just got excited to be with his crush, is all," you chuckle, motioning over to the two talking animatedly in a booth. "they didn't really ditch me, i kind of told them to go over and talk, and that i had some work to do on my own."

"playing matchmaker, i see," he nods, grip loosening but yet to let you go. "okay cupid, looks like you're stuck with me." ao'nung grins, and your heart melts at the sight.

"how'd i get so unlucky?" the witty replies are all you have left to try and prove you aren't as smitten as you seem, but he knows better.

"you're actually pretty lucky, thank you very much," he scoffs, rolling his eyes. he then holds his arm out, waiting for you to take it. "c'mon, i know a place."

"beginning to sound like an axe murderer." you joke, but take his arm anyways, coffee in the other hand, following him.

"i mean, i do know where you live." he plays along.

"quite the charmer, you are," you laugh, thanking him as he opens his car door for you. "but really, where are you taking me?"

"into town. a little birdy told me you liked shopping." ao'nung finally shares, casting a sweet smile your way.

and as he drives you two there he can feel his defenses starting to slip, and realizing just how often he's starting to smile around you, or how fond he's been of your company lately.

he has to convince himself it's all just apart of the act.

you hear the sink faucet close and the door to the bathroom unlock, followed by the quick thumps of footsteps running to your room, and ao'nung appears, curls messy and untamed from being laid on.

"wake up sleepyhead!" his voice booms, a little too loud for your sleepy state. he takes you by surprise, jumping onto your bed and landing on top of you, causing you to groan— you're sure he forgets just how much he weighs, with an athletes build.

"get off of me, you oaf." he scoffs at the insult, but complies when you shove him to the side, and pulls you back in closer anyway. you end up situated in his arms, head resting comfortably where his neck meets his shoulder. you smile contentedly, and since you don't know any better you would almost say out loud that it feels right.

at the sight of you nuzzling your cheek comfortably against him, ao'nung smiles a genuine smile— not that you would be able to tell the difference, anyway.

"don't tell me you're sleepy again?" he teases, and you shake your head, trying to prove otherwise.

"you're just exhausting." you quip back, yawning against him.

he lets out a laugh— a real laugh, for once, and he's beginning to think that he's enjoying your presence more than he planned— and you feel him press a kiss to the crown of your head, a hand reaching up to play with your hair.

"okay." he responds, in a voice quiet even for him.

you peel your head from the crook of his neck, eyes just barely open, and you have such a sleepy, love stricken look on your face that he's unable to wipe his grin, and settles closer, leveling his face to yours.

"what now?" you attempt to act annoyed, but your smile gives you away.

he only shakes his head, chuckling at you, "nothing, can't a guy just admire his girl every now and then?"

you've never been anyone's before, never even considered yourself as it. so maybe it's a little too soon, but who can blame you for jumping the gun when this boy told you something that you've been waiting practically your whole life to hear?

"i- i guess." you year your gaze away from his, suddenly feeling more shy and the pink that dusts your cheeks shows it to.

"hey, don't hide, i'm trying to look at your face." to emphasize his point his palms move to your cheeks, gently forcing you to look at him.

and it's like he's cast a spell on you, each time you meet his eyes. you'd do almost anything he asked with the way he looks at you, and it feels like you're hallucinating when you feel him lean in, gaze traveling down your face to land on your lips.

and without much thought you lean in too, eyes half-lidded and chin raised, lips about to meet until he pulls away suddenly, clearing his throat.

and the spell is broken.

it ends as quickly as it had started, and your drowsiness is replaced by a rush of adrenaline. the space between both of you is now widened, and he picks up his phone, looking at the time.

"i should- go," he awkwardly points a thumb to the door, looking just as distressed as you are. "i don't wanna be late for practice." and he gets up, but not before leaving a chaste kiss to your forehead, which does little to settle your nerves, but makes you feel slightly better nonetheless.

you nod, offering a small smile but your silence is what scares him. he stops just before leaving your room, turning around. "i'll see you soon, yeah?"

"yeah."

the confirmation takes a little weight off his chest and he smiles that boyish grin once again, leaving you alone, thoughts scattered and wondering why he didn't kiss you.

but what you don't know, is that he's wondering the same thing.

you prepared yourself to walk outside the room, peeking through the window to see ao'nung walking up to your doorstep.

you hurriedly moved behind the door, no longer visible to whoever was standing on the other side of the door. even when he knocked you didn't move, unsure of what to do.

what were you thinking? agreeing to go on a date with a man you've known for just over a week, barely knowing anything about him besides he was your friends brother and an athlete. it makes complete sense that you could be a rebound, you have no knowledge of his dating history.

the louder pounding on the door grabs your attention, and you gulp down your fears, deciding to open the door and are met with a grinning ao'nung, and for a moment you almost push all the warning signs to the side.

"was beginning to think you were gonna stand me up." he laughs, and you give a small smile in response.

as if i would be the one to stand you up. you think to yourself, gesturing for him to come in, which he happily obliges to.

"can we talk?"

your concerned tone has him spinning on his heel to look at you, a somewhat distressed look on his face. "yeah, what's wrong?"

you fall for the faux concern, falling into a false sense of comfort with the boy. "am— am i your rebound?"

the question catches him off guard, and he makes a face at the accusation. "no... why do you ask?" he counters, with a question of his own.

"lo'ak told me about ivy."

the single sentence is enough for him to understand what you mean, and he almost slips up.

but he plays it off like a pro, shrugging her name off as if it never meant a thing to him in his whole entire life. "an old flame. it was months ago, y/n. trust me when i say, you have nothing to do with her. i asked you out because i wanted to, not because i'm trying to use you." to emphasize his point, he takes your hand in his, holding eye contact with you his whole spiel.

the string of lies fall so easily off his tongue, and they're carefully crafted into an intricate web of deception that you fall into more easily than expected. you don't know it, but you're his prey, and he has you right where he wants you.

"you really mean it?" your eyes are bright, filled with a hopeful ray of light.

a light that's shining so bright it makes you blind to how masked behind his gentle smile is a cunning smirk, knowing he has you trapped.

"of course i do, sweetheart."

it's been a little over two weeks, and everything's just been more of the same. little dates into town, spontaneously showing up at each others rooms, or meeting up nearly everyday after practices.

it's been a little over two weeks, and you're still absolutely clueless to what ao'nung's been doing to you this whole time.

it's been a little over two weeks, and ao'nung's sure that he's royally fucked.

because somewhere along the line, the sound of your laugh became his favorite song, your face was like a perfect portrait, and he preferred your presence over anyone else's.

and he still couldn't bring himself to kiss you.

because he knows that if he were to, everything would be thrown right back in his face. the realization of if you ever found out, there wouldn't be a possible future with you in it. that if you found out, you or his sister may never forgive him.

so he tries distancing himself the past few days, hoping that you'll realize you could do better on your own. that maybe you don't need him for anything, and you can hurt him before he gets the chance to hurt you in a much, much, harsher way.

but you're relentless. after your texts and calls go unanswered you show up to his dorm room, and you can tell that the last thing he was expecting was to see you, in his doorway, at eleven at night.

"what's wrong?"

you're the first to speak up, and he only shrugs, refusing to meet your eye. he knows that if he does, he'd have no chance, and want to spill everything.

"ao'nung."

at your stern tone his gaze reaches your face, and his eyes are glossy. the guilt is eating him alive, and the one person he wants to tell everything, is the person he would hurt the most if he did.

"you deserve better." he's not necessarily lying, because ao'nung really is telling the truth when he says that. but it's more of a way to avoid the whole truth, keeping a key part away from you.

it's not lying, he has to convince himself.

and he chants it over and over again in his head when you invite yourself in, hands reaching up to cup his face. your touch is delicate, and tears are streaming down his face. but you're silent— you don't question his sudden change in demeanor from the past few weeks, and you're an absolute angel, comforting him when he's the last person who deserves it.

"how could you say that?" you whisper, thumbs wiping away his tears. "how can you say something like that when all you've been is good to me?"

because i haven't, he responds in his head. because everything about this relationship is a lie.

but he settles for a, "i don't know." sniffling, he pulls you close, trying to savor your warmth before it all inevitably falls apart.

you sit there, stroking his hair before pulling away, trying to catch a glimpse of his face. "hey," you call, grabbing his attention. "don't shut me out, okay?"

when he nods, your body seems to have a mind of its own and your lips meet his.

and so does his, when he kisses you back and pushes any other thought than you and him in this very moment away from his mind.

or when he deepens the kiss, and clumsily leads you to his room, and you spend the night together, underneath his sheets.

"ivy!"

tsireya squeals out the moment you step into the cafe, rushing over to hug the girl behind the counter.

you, not so much.

you're still standing behind a couple of the girls in the back of the line, slightly starstruck at the sight of her. you were bound to run into each other at some point— you did attend the same school, after all.

knowing that has done nothing to comfort your thoughts, only amplifying the effect of them.

it still takes you long enough to process it— the very girl who was able to make you hate yourself to the bone, without even having to do anything— in the flesh.

"y/n!" her cheerful voice calls out to you, with her running out behind the counter. she's not even trying, her hair greasy and eye bags prevalent, presumably from the long shift. the dirty apron wrapped around her waist, but yet you swear, you've never seen anyone look more perfect.

she's not even trying, and it feels like your stomach is clawing itself from the inside out.

because the thoughts are back, and they are loud, unforgiving, but most of all, unforgotten. they've never really left, and deep down, you've always known that.

you feel like you've always known that you won't amount to anything as good as ivy's worst, and the way that she's everything you ever wanted to be, and how she's effortlessly gotten anything you've wanted to have.

and the guilt eats at you, because as much as you want to hate her, you simply can't. you feel even worse as she pulls you into a hug, rambling about not having seen you in forever, and how she's happy you've decided to come back.

the rest of her words fall on deaf ears, and you only nod when she asks to hang out, and then watch as she leaves to talk to the rest of the girls. the air in the cafe is all of a sudden stale, and your chest feels heavier than it should.

you opt to go outside for a breath of fresh air, almost stumbling over yourself in such a rush. you don't even notice that you run into ao'nung, only mumbling out a small 'sorry!' and running out.

you don't notice that he has to do a double take, turning and noticing your distressed state. and he almost goes after you, wanting to see if you were okay when he hears the familiar laugh inside the cafe, and his emotional turmoil hits him like a pile of bricks.

you don't notice him continue his stroll into the cafe, unconsciously picking her over you.

when he wakes up, he can hear your small snores and turns, realizing he isn't alone.

you look so peaceful, your chest rising up and down in sync with your breaths, and it's enough to bring a gentle smile to his face.

ao'nung's sure he could spend the whole morning like this— admiring you in your sleep. it's almost enough to distract him from what he's really doing, from what he knows is wrong.

it's horrible, and you don't deserve it. guilt washes over him once again, and like some terrible coincidence you move in your sleep, turning away from him and it makes him think you can feel what he's doing.

but he doesn't move, unable to peel his eyes from your sleeping silhouette. it's cruel, how he knows he shouldn't be doing this— making you feel like the only girl in the world only to have to tell you the truth later.

and yet, some fucked up part of him thinks he can still salvage it.

you wake up for the second time, tangled in the familiar blue sheets.

this time, you're not alone.

and you're not the first one up, you realize, when arms softly wrap around your figure, a kiss pressed to the back of your neck.

"morning."

you smile, turning around to face him. "good morning."

"you hungry?" he offers, and if it weren't for the sound your stomach was making, you'd probably stay the whole day like this— in bed, cuddled up next to him.

"think that speaks for itself." you mumble, referring to the grumbling of your stomach.

with a chuckle, he presses a kiss to the top of your forehead. "mkay, i'll go whip up some top notch pancakes for you. you stay here, i'll bring it back so you can have breakfast in bed."

"alright." you nod happily, still sleepy and slightly dazed from the night before.

you're still painfully unaware of what you've gotten yourself into.

the two of you simultaneously set your phones down and look up, sharing a laugh at your synchronization.

"who you texting?" he's the first to speak up, and you scarf down another bite before replying.

"your sister. she just wanted to make sure i was safe."

"ah, i called lo'ak. i let him know you were with me."

"thanks," you smile, finishing your breakfast and going to clean up your plate. "should i leave this in the sink? or do you have a dishwasher?"

"just leave it." he waves you off, finishing his own food and reaching to grab your plate, his brow raising when you pull away.

"cmon, you only took me home and gave up your bed and made me breakfast. at least let me do the dishes." you argue, turning away to shield the plate.

"woman, give me your dish!" he laughs, lunging towards you and missing your hand, but successfully caging you against the counter. you're both quiet now— faces a little too close for comfort and only your hard breathing heard. "hi."

"hey." you reply, heart pounding in your chest. if you didn't know just how beautiful his eyes were before, you certainly know now, eyes tracing over his features.

he opens his mouth, as if he's about to speak, before licking his lips and hesitating. you watch as he recollects himself, not bothering to move from his current positions, "you wanna go out with me?"

"like for lunch?"

"like for a date."

"oh." you speak so softly, and in such a surprised tone it makes him laugh, his head tilting cutely to the side.

"what, you don't wanna date me?"

"nonono, not that!" you scramble, shaking your head and trying to justify your response while he stands there, clearly amused. "i was just shocked, is all. i- i'd be happy to."

"great," and with that, your plans are finalized, and he takes the opportunity to take the plate from your hands, walking over to the sink. "i'll take this, thank you very much."

"hey!" you exclaim, watching in disbelief. "you're impossible."

"just try to be faster next time, sweetheart."

you wake up to the sun in your face, groaning tiredly. you roll over, tangling yourself deeper into the dark blue sheets when you realize—

you don't own blue sheets.

you scramble, trying to untangle yourself but making it worse, causing a bit of havoc. you look underneath the blanket, sighing in relief and laying back down tiredly when you see you're clothed.

the peace doesn't last for long, though.

as the door opens you recognize the boy behind it, with his ocean eyes and messy curls.

"you took me home?" the questions comes out more like a demand, and ao'nung chuckles at your tone.

"not like that, if that's what you're thinking," he starts, handing you some advil and a glass of water. "for the headache," he adds, quietly.

"i was gonna call an uber for you but you were so adamant on being a broke college girl and how you didn't wanna blow fifty bucks on a mile drive, and then you started going on about how you could sleep on the couch and there was no way in hell i was leaving you with the team—"

"oh my eywa," you groan, all your memories from the night before still foggy. "did i do anything embarrassing?"

"you're an amusing drunk, that's for sure," he laughs, recalling the few memories he remembers. "i let you change into a pair of sweats and my shirt. and then lo'ak called, he picked up tsireya and i let him know i was with you."

"oh, that's good," you nod, downing the glass of water. "remind me to never go drinking with you ever again."

"i'm a good drinking partner! i got you home safe, didn't i?"

"sorry, does this look like my apartment to you?"

"you get the point," he scoffs teasingly, about to head back out of his room. "i made breakfast, bring your lazy bum out whenever you feel like it."

"mkay." you smile at him before he leaves and shuts the door, leaving you to observe his room.

it's plain, for the most part, definitely a minimalistic style and exactly what you expected (not that you were thinking of being in his room). the walls were a comforting color grey, and his sheets felt as soft as ever. there was a simple closet with a desk next to it, and you smile as the peaceful quiet of the room, and how the window is slightly open, noises from outside heard and sunlight pouring in through the cracks of the curtains.

after looking around you grab your phone that was laying atop the table, texting your friends to ensure that you were alright. you walk down the hall, following the smell of food and locating the kitchen, finally realizing ao'nung's appearance.

he's near the stove, cooking tool in hand and flipping over some pancakes. it's not that what grabs your attention, however, because your eyes quickly drop to his toned torso, uncovered and tan. you almost gape at realizing how fit he is, counting one, two, three, four, five six—

"take a picture, it'll last longer."

you turn red, eyes widening apologetically. "i didn't mean- i mean i meant- fuck what i-"

"i'm messing with you," he laughs, the sound booming throughout the room and it's so contagious, you chuckle yourself. "i'm cooking some more pancakes, i put your plate on the table. and i hope you like orange juice, that's the only thing i had in the fridge."

"it's more than enough, thank you, really." you're more than grateful and unsure of how to demonstrate it, with him just meeting you and yet letting you sleep in his own bed, in his own clothes, eating his food, in his kitchen.

"tsireya would kick my ass if she knew i left a girl alone at a party like that. especially in your state and you being her friend." ao'nung picks up on what you're feeling, and you're somewhat surprised at how well he's able to read you.

it almost makes you feel special, that you were the girl he took home last night, when you go quiet and shove a bite of the pancake into your mouth and start to wonder if you aren't the only girl he's done this with.

"what're you thinking about?" his voice snaps you out of your thoughts, slightly muffled behind his hand as he covers his mouth full of food. he leans back in his chair, giving you quite the show, and you blush again at the sight.

"nothing." you shake your head with a soft voice, smiling politely and taking another bite.

"c'mon, it's not nice to lie to someone who gave up their bed for you." he smiles, and you melt just a tad at the pearly whites he flashes.

"just wondering how many girls you do this with, that's all." you finally admit, trying to play it off casually, but the pink that dusts your cheek most likely gives you away.

"don't think i've had a girl in here for breakfast who wasn't tsireya in the past few months except you, sweetheart." the nickname falls so naturally off his tongue, and he falters, realizing you aren't part of some fantasy he can't let go of.

he recovers though, before you can even realize.

you're too flustered to notice the cracks in his armor, or to notice he's putting up any defenses at all. you can't tell what he's playing at, or what he's working towards. part of you wants to suspect that he's playing at some game, maybe, but you're unsure of just what.

what you don't realize, however, is that the game is you.

"how dare you not tell us you were coming back?" kiri's voice rang throughout your apartment, followed by the scrambled footsteps of all three siblings, who were all running up to embrace you.

"oh my god, you're taller!" lo'ak exclaimed, laughing as he looked you up and down.

"she's wearing platforms, dumbass." neteyam chuckled, pulling away as the rest of his siblings did the same.

"don't trample the girl, my goodness." spider called out from your room, joining you all in the main room.

"sorry, i wanted it to be a surprise," you smiled, already feeling more at home from the sight of your old friends. "i missed you all so much."

"you missed so much," kiri emphasized, looking to neteyam and lo'ak. "these two finally got girlfriends."

"shut up," you gasped, slapping a hand over your mouth. "who would be dumb enough to date either of you?"

"you remember ivy, don't you?"

your eyes widened at the name, having been somewhat friends with the girl before you left. "no way, the girl you've been in love for like— your whole life?"

"yeah," neteyam chuckled, looking bashful at the mention of his girlfriend. "she wanted to come but she had to work today."

"no worries, i'll catch up with her another time," you waved him off, starting to unpack a box and looking to lo'ak. "you having a girlfriend really shocks me."

"you're so lame," lo'ak groaned, ruffling your hair and dramatically hissing in pain when you pinched his arm. "her names tsireya— she's on the dance team. which you should totally try out for, by the way. you'd totally make it and then you'd become friends and-"

"okay, we get it, you want me to be friends with your girlfriend," you tease. "but i have an audition tomorrow, actually."

"good luck!" kiri wished you, finally moving to one of the unopened boxes, and turning to her brothers. "okay guys, we should probably help with what we came here to do."
