the sun will rise [robb]²
summary: chaos consumes the capital as dorne plans an assault on the reach. the young wolf is named king of the trident, and armies begin marching on highgarden. on the bright side, wedding bells will soon be heard throughout westeros.
author’s note: [ᵖᵃʳᵗ ¹] the plot thickens (〇_o) sorry this took so long i’ve been moving back to campus and classes are starting :/ plus it takes me a while to write a plot that fits into the world so lmk if y’all like it!! if i make a third part best believe dany will be showing up
tags: description of reader (vague dornish features), westerosi politics, pain
When the Mountain’s head arrived at Sunspear, the high lords and ladies of Westeros understood Robb Stark was not a man to be trifled with. His army had captured Lord Tywin's mad dog in the riverlands, the king beheaded him, and now Gregor Clegane’s monstrous head is mounted at the gates of the Old Palace. You invade the Reach with twenty-thousand soldiers and meet with Lord Tarly.
“Dorne supports Robb Stark’s claim to the North. He has no desire to sit on the Iron Throne. The Lannisters are treacherous bastards that killed his father and now hold his sisters as hostages in the capital. Robb Stark wants justice,”
“Robb Stark was seen marching north,” Lord Tarly attempts to portray Robb’s choice to take his army to the riverlands as weak, and it angers you.
“Robb Stark retreated to defend the riverlands against the Lannisters,” You snip and narrow your eyes. “They set the country on fire, and he chose to send his army and help the river lords,” Because he’s a good man. A good king.
“And what do you want? Why have you brought an army into my country? To set it ablaze?” He’s hostile. It is to be expected, when a force of twenty-thousand Dornishmen appear at your castle.
“I want to see the rightful heir take the throne, and I want Tywin Lannister’s head on a spike,”
“Did you ask the Young Wolf for the Mountain’s head?” Randyll Tarly can be more useful alive than dead, all you need to do is convince him to break his oath to the Lannisters. With Robb killing Gregor Clegane, you have quite a bit of leverage.
“No, I told him what the Mountain did to my aunt. How he murdered her children and raped her with their blood on his hands, and then that ugly head showed up. I’m sure Tywin Lannister’s head will come soon enough,” Robb has yet to lose a battle. Lord Tarly must know that.
“Princess Elia was a good woman. What the Mountain did to her is sickening, unspeakable, something only a beast could commit,”
“And what of the beast’s master?” You ask. If he is so morally repulsed with the Mountain’s actions, will he break his oaths with the Tyrells and the Crown? “Tywin gave Clegane the order to kill your crowned princess and her children, and now he sits on the Iron Throne,”
“Joffrey is king,”
“Joffrey is a bastard boy with no sense of true power,” You scoff.
“You support Stannis?”
“No,” Stannis would not be a good king. No. In your mind, only a Targaryen could ever sit on the Iron Throne. “I would see Daenerys Targaryen take the throne. It is her right by name, and when her dragons are grown, Westeros will be hers by conquest,”
Daenerys has recently obtained eight thousand Unsullied, and your uncle wants to send your father to escort her to Westeros.
“So it is true,” Lord Tarly looks to the floor. “The Targaryen has three dragons,” He states. With them, she killed the slave masters and sacked Astapor. Reports say her dragons are now the sizes of small dogs, and they keep growing.
“The same as Aegon when he conquered the six kingdoms,” You remind Lord Tarly. “You remained loyal to House Targaryen during the Rebellion, the only man to give the Usurper a defeat. Your honor is unquestionable, Lord Tarly,”
“What do you want from me?” The old man sees right through your flattery.
“You are one of the finest battle commanders in Westeros,” You tell him, continuing with flattery. “Daenerys Targaryen has Ser Barristan Selmy guiding her, but she will need more advisors like you,” No one would ever question Barristan Selmy’s honor, and if he supports the dragon queen, more will flock to her. “A Targaryen will sit on throne again, and the Reach will need a need a new, loyal Warden of the South,”
“How may I serve?” He asks.
“Help me take Highgarden in the name of Daenerys Targaryen and vow to destroy her enemies,” You’ve never met the girl and she has no idea you exist, but here you are, leading a war in her name, leading your uncle’s war. “Tywin Lannister will not survive this war, but you can. Your family can,”
And so Horn Hill breaks faith with House Tyrell, Joffrey the Illborn, and Old Lion on the Iron Throne.
A raven comes in the night with news of your success. Robb smiles as he reads your writing. He rolls the parchment and puts it with your other letters. In the months since his departure from Dorn, Robb has kept close correspondence with you. You now hold dozens of his letters, many in which Robb stopped short of admitting his love for you.
“What’s got you all melancholy, Stark?” Theon teases as he enters the private chambers.
“Y/N has claimed Horn Hill, and Lord Tarly has turned against the Tyrells,” Robb tells Theon. “They ride for Highgarden,”
“That’s a good thing,” Theon states.
“Yes,” Robb replies. He supposes. Though, he wonders how you took Horn Hill from an experienced and narrow minded man like Randyll Tarly. Had you met him in battle? Were you wounded? Had you convinced the old man to turn against the Crown?
“But?”
“I want to see her again,” Robb admits. He misses your Dornish drawl. The way you say his name. Your playful little smile. The way your eyes shine.
“So do it,” Theon smiles. “Demand she meet you here at Riverrun,”
“It’s not that simple,”
Robb looks at the war map on the table and moves the sun piece representing Dorne on the war map to Horn Hill — Horn Hill and Highgarden are close in proximity and the vast of the Tyrell army went to King’s Landing to help defeat the Baratheon army. Perhaps you’ve already taken Highgarden.
No one expected Dorne to turn against the Crown and attack the Reach. The Tyrell army rode with Tywin Lannister to King’s Landing, and they’ve remained there ever since, but that won’t last long. Not when news reaches the capital.
“I could go to her,” Again.
Robb smiles; he would help you keep the Reach and meets with his generals in the morning to discuss Dorne’s invasion. “My lords, the princess of Dorne has taken Horn Hill. She and Lord Tarly move on Highgarden as we speak,”
His generals are elated at the news.
When he returned with forty thousand Dornish soldiers, there was a tide in the war and his army was reinvigorated. With the Dornish aid, Robb helped his uncle reclaim the riverlands, and the riverlords named him king.
“But for now I ride to the Crag. I will take forty thousand men to Highgarden to help our southron allies take the Reach,”
“And what about Casterly Rock?” Lord Umber questions. They’ve already made plans to assault the seat of House Lannister.
“Tywin Lannister isn’t at Casterly Rock. The castle means nothing to me. The Reach, with all its food and wealth, means everything to him,” Robb explains. He’s certain Tywin will move to take Highgarden.
“They’re still burning our lands,” His uncle the Blackfish states, weary about Robb’s decision to abandon the riverlands and help a southern princess take the Reach.
“That is why I’m leaving ten thousand men in your command, Blackfish,” Robb replies. A seasoned warrior, a veteran of half a hundred battles, he trusts his uncle to protect his kingdom while he rides south to you defeat Tywin Lannister.
And Robb feels the cool sea breeze before news hits the capital of Dornish forces in the mountains bordering the Reach.
Highgarden falls within a fortnight, and the citizens of Highgarden are gathered to hear Randyll Tarly claim the castle in the name of Daenerys Targaryen.
After implementing order within the castle, ravens were sent out to inform the other lords of the Reach of Highgarden’s fall and news reached the capital. You write to your uncle, informing him of the developments and asking if he had sent your father east.
You expected the Lannister and Tyrell armies to mobilize after the royal wedding, now in three days, but Dickon informs you of a scout’s recent reports.
"My princess,” Dickon Tarly unnecessarily kneels after entering the war room. “A Lannister host was spotted on the Gold Road. Some twenty-thousand men,”
If Tywin was sending an army to take back Highgarden, they would be traveling on the Roseroad. You expected Tywin to move on Highgarden, so you’re disappointed with Dickon’s news. You’ve sent a small host, some five thousand men, to claim houses east of Highgarden and ready the castles.
“There is still no word on the Tyrell army, princess,” Dickon adds.
“We should take a vast host north and take Goldengrove,” You think of sending Dickon to command the capture of Goldengrove. He is a good fighter, and the son of a respected lord. House Rowan would bend easier if a Tarly was to ride north.
And then Maester Lomys enters the war room to inform you that the King in the North is in the Great Hall, asking for the princess of Dorne.
In the Great Hall, you lay eyes on the stocky, ocean eyed, and auburn haired northman. He looks at you and smiles, making you weak to your knees. He looks so regal. His hair has grown, more red-brown curls decorate his head like a crown. You can see the blood still on his breastplate. The Young Wolf smells of war.
“You were in the riverlands,” You’re shocked to see him. It’s to be expected. Since his landing at Crakehall, Robb has led his army south to Highgarden, easily taking Red Lake and Goldengrove.
“I was,” Robb grins. “And now I’m here,” For you, his eyes tell you.
Your dark eyes pull him closer, and he finds himself entranced all over again. You’re wearing armor now, and your raven hair is now braided in intricate braids that are decorated in small gold metal cuffs. You’re striking, and your obsidian eyes could stop a man’s heart. Robb is sure of it.
“Have you missed us?” Theon asks.
“You? Oh, so, so, so much,” You say with clear sarcasm and the smile on Theon’s face drops, making you laugh, oh and how wonderful a sound that is. Robb smiles again; his heart fills with joy.
“Red Lake and Goldengrove are yours,” Robb proclaims.
You look confused. Your eyes narrow and brows stitch together as your pretty lips part, “I don’t understand,”
“Robb claimed everything north of Highgarden in your name,” Theon repeats.
For Daenerys, you think to yourself. The Reach is for Daenerys.
“Thank you for coming to our aid, Your Grace,” You say it so formly. So...detached. “We expect assaults from the northern mountains and the Rose Road,” You inform him of the military situation.
That is when Robb sees the two men standing behind you.
“Your Grace, we had not expected you,” Lord Tarly states. He extends his arm, “It is an honor to meet the man that sent Tywin Lannister running,” They shake hands.
“When riding to Highgarden, we saw troops marching east,” Robb notes.
“The princess has ordered captains to ride and prepare Cider Hall, Longtable, and Bitterbridge,” Dickon informs the king. “Your Grace,” He quickly adds and bows before Robb.
“A sharp tactic, princess,” Robb compliments your aptitude, grinning ear to ear at your recent accomplishments on the southron front. Within half a year you’ve mobilized an army through Dorne and took Highgarden from Tywin Lannister. Joffrey may marry Margaery Tyrell, but it means nothing so long as you hold the Reach.
Lord Tarly takes them to the war room, and you reveal to Robb your plans to defend the Reach against the Lannister-Tyrell army. Robb has never met a woman as brave, strong-willed and intuitive as you. You would make a good queen, he thinks.
The following night, Robb asks a Dornish soldier to take him to your room, desperate to see you in a setting you weren’t preparing for battle. When the sun rises in the morning, you’re expected to ride for the mountains with Lord Tarly’s son and a host of forty-thousand; Robb will march east with Lord Tarly.
“Fuck off,” He faintly heard through the door after knocking twice, and he chuckles.
“That’s no way to speak to a king,” Robb says to the door.
Within seconds the door is opened, and he sees you.
“You shouldn’t be here,”
“I wanted to see you before you left,” Robb admits. He sailed and rode for weeks to see your smile again, and now he wants to be at your side for as long as possible. He wanted to feel peace, and now Robb knows he can only achieve that with you in his arms.
Even while you were readying for war, he felt safe. He felt reassurance that this war would be won. He felt a calmness makes him terrified of losing you. He felt love.
But now you can’t even look him in the eye, always avoiding his glance. You hug yourself, indirectly pushing your breasts up, and Robb glances at the low neckline of your brown-gold silk nightgown.
He quickly looks away and clears his throat. “You were right. I shouldn’t have come. I didn’t mean to offend. Apologies, princess,” Robb almost turns away, embarrassed with your rejection.
When he turns his head, Robb sees Lord Tarly approaching, and his blood runs cold. Visiting you so late in the night was a stupid idea, Robb thinks to himself. Stupid and selfish. To Lord Tarly, it may appear you invited Robb to your private chambers, and Robb feels a pit in his stomach at the thought of tarnishing your honor.
"Lord Tarly, we-” Robb was ready to explain, but the concerned look in Randyll’s face stopped him. “What’s happened?” The continent is at war, a many number of things could have made Lord Tarly white with fear. Stannis Baratheon could have taken the capital.
“We’ve received a letter from the Vale,” Randyll informs the king and princess.
They are convinced in the war room.
“Lady Arryn plans to marry Petyr Baelish soon after the royal wedding,” Lord Tarly reveals to the small war council.
"The Vale borders the entirety of the riverlands. If they join the war and support the Lannisters, they’ll attack your kingdoms,” You look at Robb, concern now in your eyes.
“She’s your aunt,” Theon comments. “She wouldn’t hurt her family,” The young boy assumes.
“My mother says she’s not the woman she once was,” Robb shakes his head.
“Then we should assume Baelish will pull the Vale into the fold, and the Knights of the Vale will fight for the Crown,” Randyll says. “I suggest we advance the wedding, princess,”
“And just when would the wedding take place?” You ask, displeased with Lord Tarly’s request and angered he would speak of it in front of Robb. “Now? Hours before we ride for war?" You scoff. You can’t even look at Robb, afraid of facing the wave of sadness in his baby-blue eyes.
“My princess, it-”
“I will hear no more of this,” You bite, angered with the Tarlys. “You’ll have the marriage you want when the war is won,” That was the agreement. Lord Tarly would break faith with the Crown and the Tyrells, but only if they would be given Highgarden and a suitable marriage; and a marriage with a princess of Dorne would ensure the Tarlys remained loyal to the Targaryen queen.
“Why are you marrying Dickon Tarly? Why now?” Robb knows why. He understands. Though, his understandment does not make you marrying another man any easier.
“I don’t love him,” You proclaim. I love you. “I could never love him,” Because I love you. “Our engagement is purely political, to cement the alliance between the Reach and Dorne. If I marry him now, the Tarlys will gain more legitimacy as lords of Highgarden,”
Robb sighs, “Walder Frey expects me to marry one of his daughters when the war is over,” He tells you, and you can’t even be angry with Robb’s withholding of his engagement. You only feel heartache, knowing your oaths and vows must be kept if the war is to be a success.
“But I don’t love her,” Whomever she may be. “You are the light of my world. I look at you, and I know that I would-” break my vows, Robb meant to say. He meant to declare his love for you, but he is stopped with a kiss.
He feels your soft and full lips on his and your slick tongue in his mouth, and Robb kisses you back with the hungry desperation of a man in a desert, pulling you closer to him and wrapping his right arm around your waist.
You hold his face and pull away from the kiss, studying the look on Robb’s face. The boy is utterly in love with you, and you with him.
“War is an inconvenient time to be in love,” You whisper, pulling your body away from Robb’s hold. He lets you go. Despite the passion and lust you feel for the northman, you can never act upon it. That kiss will be all you have. You will keep your word to the Tarlys, as unhappy as it makes you.
Robb half-believed you were ready to throw away your promise to Lord Tarly and run away with him, but he knows that is not the woman you are. As fierce and strange as you are, you are a princess: proud, honest, and true.
And he is a king. It is expected he keep his oath to Lord Frey.
Four years Robb has been fighting, chasing Tywin Lannister’s army, winning every battle, but Sansa and Arya are still captives. He just wants his family to be whole again. He just wants to go home. He wants to be yours.
Before Robb met you, he saw no end to this war, but you gave him hope. Robb sees saw you by his side, your hands in his and taking vows before a weirwood tree.
“I’m tired,” he sighs, sitting at the edge of the bed, “and it’s awfully difficult to see a happy ending if you are not beside me,” He confesses, looking up at you, dejected.
Your eyes soften.
“I may never be your wife,” your words stab his heart, “but I will always be at your side,”
“Lying is not very princessly,” Why did you kiss him? Why would you give him a single second of serenity before ripping it away entirely? How could you be so cruel? When he is old and blind and can no longer walk, he’ll still remember the feel of your lips on his. The ghost of your lips will forever haunt him.
Though Robb could never find it in his heart to hate you, he tears his eyes away from you, unable to bear seeing you in a wedding gown meant for another. It physically pains him that, within a few short minutes, you’ll be bound to another.
Robb feels sick.
Marriage isn’t for love, it’s political, your uncle told you. So, when you envisioned your wedding, you held no expectations that you would ever marry someone you loved. All that you wanted was to be dressed in traditional Dornish garments, to be wed wearing the colors and symbols of your country.
Instead, here you stand, in a foreign country dressed in unpleasant clothes and jewelry, deeply and unequivocally in love with Robb Stark, yet destined for a political marriage.
You feel sick.
“Princess,” Lord Tarly calls for you. You turn and see him standing at the doorway of the chambers, donning his battle armor with a cape of his house colors. “It is time,”
You’ve never felt such dread before.
You look to Robb once more, memorizing the shade of his eyes and the way his curls frame his face. “I love you,” You confess in a whisper. “My vows to Tarly will mean nothing because I am yours, until my dying breath, I am yours,” Your declaration breaks Robb’s heart in two, because you won’t be cloaked in the sigil of a direwolf and he won’t wear your house colors. His heart shatters because you’ll never embrace as husband and wife.
So, Robb rides for Cider Hall before the small wedding ceremony takes place, lacking the strength to witness the woman he loves pledge herself to another.

The Astrological Signs of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" characters
Part 1 - Team Avatar
♎ Aang - Libra
Libra is an air sign and Aang is an airbender. More than that, though, Libra (represented by the scales) is the sign of harmony and balance. As the Avatar, restoring and maintaining balance is Aang's primary duty. Aside from all that symbolism though, Aang's personality is a lot like a Libra.
Libra is the opposite compliment to Aries, a war sign. Libra don't really like discord (at least, they don't like to be IN the discord and chaos). They're lovers, not fighters, so they tend to be peacekeepers. This is Aang to a T. Aang is not only one of the youngest characters in the show (and therefore, the most likely to be uncomfortable with violence), but he is also a monk, raised by other peaceful monks.
He values peace and all life. Even his fighting styles are evasive and are more about using an opponent's strength against them, rather than attacking. It's something that is brought up in the Book 2 episode "Bitter Work", when Aang has trouble learning earthbending from Toph. Libras (depending on the rest of their chart, of course) often tend to respond to conflict in a similar manner, by being avoidant.
You see the pacifist in Aang anytime he needs to mediate a conflict. Examples include "The Great Divide" in Book 1, where Aang has to mediate between the two tribes (as well as Sokka and Katara). He does so by telling them that "Harsh words won't solve anything. Action will". Of course, when that doesn't work, he just lies and makes up the alternative story of WeiJin and JinWei. I don't think Aang is a big fan of lies, but it was for the sake of peace, a means to an end. Very Libra.
Another thing that makes Aang a Libra is the fact that 1) Libra is ruled by Venus and 2) Libra rules the 7th house, which is essentially relationships. Aang's relationships (platonic and romantic) mean EVERYTHING to him, and there's a reason why putting one of his loved ones in danger is initially the only way to activate the Avatar state. He's a very friendly, charming and loving kid (like most Libras) and he's the first one from team Avatar who believes they can make it through the secret tunnel, because of how strongly he believes in his love for Katara. The final point is Aang's reluctance (or sometimes downright refusal) to cause harm to others unless absolutely necessary. While others use violence, Aang is more likely to want to befriend his enemies, and that's actually a good thing. It's Libra's superpower.
♋ Katara - Cancer
Cancer is a water sign that is ruled by the moon, and Katara is a (very powerful) waterbender who draws her powers from the moon. In astrology, water signs are known for being on the emotional side. And with Cancer's ruling planet being the moon (the planet of emotions and also the celestial body that pushes and pulls the tides), Cancers are known to be so emotional, that they're often just archetyped by it. Katara is similarly emotional (see the Book 3 episode "Ember Island Players"). However, Katara being so in touch with her emotions also makes her extremely emotionally intelligent. Like Cancers and most other water signs, her heightened sensitivity allows her to almost psychically sense how others are feeling, and to know how exactly to respond to and comfort them. There's a reason why Katara has such great chemistry (when it comes to her one-on-one conversations) with so many people (Aang, Haru, Jet, Zuko, Toph). Her emotional intelligence also makes her very mature for her age and allow her to see things clearer than others, or to foresee things that others don't.
Cancers are often either family oriented, or they love and value their home (this can either be their childhood home, current home, or the city, country or culture that they came from). This applies with Katara. As a waterbender, being from the water tribes is a big part of who she is, and she has a deep love for her culture. We see how being the only waterbender in the South Pole and having no one to show her the ways of waterbending saddens her, and how happy she is to hear that Hama is willing to teach her (the only other waterbender from the Southern water tribes that Katara has ever met).
With regards to Katara being mature for her age, she's also very motherly. The Book 3 episode "The Runaway" (as well as most of her interactions with Toph) demonstrates this. The moon (which rules Cancer) is The Mother in astrology, and so most Cancers have a significant relationship with motherhood. Katara was very close to her late mother and her death still affects her.
Following the death of her mother, Katara has basically had to become everyone else's mother and hold things together. You see this as well (in a more positive light) in the Book 2 episode "The Desert". In this episode, Appa is missing, Aang is too upset to think or act clearly, Toph can't see properly because of the sand and Sokka is high off cactus juice. Katara is the one that is keeping everything together in this episode.
On the downside, Katara's mothering can turn to nagging sometimes, but I don't blame her. She's a child that's had to grow up way too fast. She has a lot of pressure on her. With water, that pressure can build up, until it bursts like a dam wall (which it's likely to do). It's the combination of this, as well as Katara's strong and fearless sense of right and wrong that lead to those cataclysmic outbursts that both Katara and water signs are sometimes known for.
♋♐Sokka - Cancer sun, but with a lot of Sagittarius aspects in the birth chart
Okay, let's start with the Sagittarius side of things. There are a lot of elements of the Sag personality in Sokka. For one thing, luck. Not only does he manage to survive (and thrive) in the entire series WITHOUT any bending powers, but that boomerang ALWAYS comes back! That's some Jupiter-luck energy if I've ever seen it.
Sokka was originally going to be a more serious character, but the voice actor decided to improvise and add some of his own humor to the role, which created the Sokka that we know and love now. I mention this because the voice actor (Jack De Sena) is a Sagittarius. Sokka has the kind of personality that provides humor in difficult times and can lighten up the sometimes very heavy atmosphere in the group. He doesn't just make people laugh, he likes to laugh as well (at his own jokes and even at his enemy's jokes). In the book 3 episode "The Ember Island Players", heeven goes to the effort of getting Suki to sneak him backstage, so he could give the actor playing himself some tips and extra jokes (and low and behold, the crowd actually laughs at them). In his words, he's "just a guy who loves comedy". In fact, I think he's one of the only ones there who just decides to kick his feet up and enjoy the show (by basically turning the situation into a date night for him and Suki). Sagittarians love to laugh and make people laugh. They're optimists who like to have a good time, and are likely to be the make-lemonade-out-of-lemons type.
He's also one of the smartest and most competent characters on the show. He has excellent problem solving skills, and isn't afraid to look at things through a different angle and try new things to expand his worldview and knowledge. This is relevant, as Sag rules the 9th house which includes, amoung other things, higher learning, truth and knowledge. He can be a bit tactless and insensitive...a little slick at the mouth, but it's largely ignored by others, as he is likeable and funny enough for others to let it go. That's quite a Sag trait.
The Cancerian part of Sokka's personality is less pronounced, but it's there. He's VERY protective of his loved ones, even before the situation with Princess Yue. He is family oriented in that he admires his dad and the traditions and customs of the water tribes. He loves and is just as proud of his culture and home life as Katara is, but just in a different way. He also always looks out for the other members of team Avatar. He can tell when a member of the team needs support and immediately jumps to action (for example, the way he immediately grabs Toph's hand to guide her in "The Serpent's Pass", in "The Desert" and on the air ships during the final battle in the series finale). He's also very loving and protective of his sister, despite how often they fight. Also, quiet as it's kept, Cancers are one of the funniest signs in the zodiac.
♉♈Toph - Taurus sun, but with a lot of Aries aspects in the birth chart
Let's start with the Taurus aspects. Taurus is not just an earth sign, it's FIXED earth. It embodies the firm stance and hardheadness of not just Toph, but earthbenders in general. Tauruses are very stubborn and like to do things their own way at their own pace. Combine that with the independence and confrontational nature of an Aries, and you've got Toph.
Aries value their independence, sometimes to the point of being selfish, which is what we get with Toph in the Book 2 episode "The Chase". In this episode, it's Toph's first time riding with the group, but it's also her first taste of freedom. Like an Aries, she hates the idea of seeming weak or helpless, and has to learn that freedom doesn't mean that she has to do everything alone.
As Toph shows us, there is, however, power and strength in valuing independence, so long as you're not insecure about independence or projecting. Toph is a wealthy, sheltered child who is blind, which, in most cases, would make her vulnerable. But it's not the case. Toph ran away once before when she was little, and that's where she learned earthbending from the giant blind moles. She learned earthbending not just as a martial art, but as an extension of herself and her senses, and as a way to see. She would have never been able to master doing that (nor would shehave gone on to do even greater things like train the avatar and discover metal bending), if she didn't have the will, bravery and self assurance to run away in the first place. That little pilgrimage (her life changing adventure, if you will...but still not with Zuko, I'm afraid😔) showed the value of independence. Of going out on your own journey of self-discovery. Much like how Zuko needed to be be alone for a while during Book 2 for his own journey of self-discovery.
Oh, speaking of "Zuko Alone"...
♈Zuko - Aries
Zuko's arc in the show shows us the transition from a dark-sided, low vibrational Aries, to a high-vibrational Aries at it's best: passionate, brave, protective, strong, innovative, a good leader, driven, energetic and independent. Zuko embodies many Aries (and general fire sign) traits, both good and bad. He can be impulsive, and doesn't always think things all the way through. Aries is cardinal fire, so it's about getting up and going, just DOING something. Zuko is known for never giving up. These are things that that Iroh, Sokka and Ursa have mentioned. Zuko is an impatient person and is very fiery, hot headed and reactionary even for a firebender.
His reactionary nature makes him prone to a bit of melodrama (and I imagine that's why it's so fun for Azula or even Iroh to get a rise out of him). This is definitely the case with Aries. They're not the only sign with a temper, but they are the most likey to cause a scene and storm off in a huff about it. Or challenge you to a fight. Zuko can't refuse a fight for the life of him. At least not until he evolves and figures out his ✨true destiny✨.
One the other hand, he also keeps that same fiery energy when it comes to defending those who can't defend themselves and fighting for what he believes is right. In these cases, he refuses to back down. Even if his chances of winning are low, he'll still keep pushing forward. That's the will, energy and drive of cardinal fire. Zuko just needs to chanel all that power into something useful and constructive, like creating change for the greater good, and not distraction. Like with fire in general, Aries (and Zuko) is useful and powerful, but requires direction, guidance and purpose, so as to not risk letting the fire run wild to cause destruction and devastation.

Falling (In Love) [Patrick Stump feat. Fall Out Boy]
Based Off Requests By @pandagrace12 & @justawildmarebearmcrbvbfob I know the fic wasn’t THAT recent but I was wondering if you could write a part 2 (kinda) to the fair fic when you run into them. Maybe like you go backstage and your friends are jealous and stuff so they ditch you (again lmao) or something…& Can you do a sequel to the fair one but with a slight Patrick x reader
Click to Read Part One: Falling at the Fair
“I still don’t really believe you” Riley comments as we all stand crowded around the bathroom mirror, getting ready for the show.
I stifle a groan, “What do you mean you don’t believe me? I have a picture with all of them! And Andy himself texted it to me”
“I know but…” she continues, “But what are the odds?”
“I believe you. And am insanely jealous” Britney pipes in.
I grin, “It was incredible, it’s actually still a little hard to believe myself” I nudge Riley on the shoulder. She smiles at me,giving in, eyes flicking back to the mirror to do her makeup.
My phone pings from the other room and I rush out to get it, seeing it’s part of a group text with all of the guys in Fall Out Boy.
“What are you smiling about?” Britney teases as I come back in the bathroom beaming.
“It turns out that not only do I get to go backstage, but we all get pit tickets!” I exclaim loudly.
“No way!” Britney screamed, jumping up and down.
“What about backstage?” Riley asks, looking excited.
“What about it?”
“I mean we get to come with you, right? Or are we just supposed to wait around in the car until you’re done”
“Oh, um, I didn’t really think about that” I reply awkwardly, confused by her angry tone. She’d been acting distant and irritated at me since we got back from the fair.
“Gee thanks” she says sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
“But I’m sure you guys can come with me, let me just ask!” I pull out my phone, typing a quick text asking if it’s at all possible to bring them with me. I study over the text several times, hoping I don’t sound too needy. I finally hit send, and within a minute there’s a response from Patrick, with a smiley face or anything.
“Okay, okay, don’t worry I asked and you guys can definitely come! Patrick is adding you to the list right now”
Finally, Riley’s disgruntled exterior fades away and she smiles at me. “This is gonna be so amazing! I can’t believe we get to meet Fall Out Boy!”
“I know!” Britney agrees, jumping up and down.
“Now we all have to look extra hot, so let’s do this” she says excitedly, plugging in her curling iron.
We all spend the next two hours doing our hair and makeup, and choosing our outfits.
“Do you think Patrick will like this?” Riley asks, twirling in front of the mirror.
“I thought you were wearing your Fall Out boy Shirt?” I ask, confused to see her in a skin tight dress instead.
“Well I was, but that’s before I found out we were actually gonna meet the band!” she explains as though it’s obvious.
“Oh, yeah, right” I say, suddenly feeling uncomfortable.
“So will Patrick like this?” she asks again, facing me.
“Um, I don’t know, why do you care?”
“Um because he’s Patrick Stump! He’s like, the hottest guy on the planet, I want to impress him”
“He’ll love it, I’m sure, won’t be able to take his eyes off of you” Britney comments. I shift around uncomfortably, unsure as to why this conversation is making me feel so strange, “Me on the other hand, I prefer Joe. What about you?”
“Me? Oh um, I don’t know, they’re all pretty cute” I shrug, avoiding the question.
“Is that what you’re wearing?” Riley suddenly asks, eyeing my outfit.
I look down at my Fall out boy shirt, jean shorts, and vans. “Yeah…why?” I ask, self consciously.
“Just wondering if you’re ready” she explains.
“Oh! Right yeah” I reply, letting a breath out as I realize she wasn’t trying to insult me.
I look at the three of us in the mirror, smiling, “We all look hot, now let’s go”
We pile into Britney’s car, blasting Fall Out Boy on the way to the venue. After a thirty five minute drive, we park in the garage across the street, and join the hundreds of other people pouring into the venue.
“There’s where you pick up the tickets” Britney points out.
I nod, swallowing and suddenly worried this might all be a prank.
“What if I go up and they don’t have tickets? What if it’s a joke?” I say, nervously turning to them.
“Of course it’s not a joke” Riley reassures me, although she seems a little annoyed
“Yeah, they wouldn’t do that to you. And if there’s a problem, you can just call one of the guys” Britney adds, squeezing my shoulder.
I nod, turning and joining the line.
A couple minutes later I get up to the little window.
“Name?” the lady asks. I give her my name and hold my breath as she scans the list.
“Hmm, I’m not seeing your name…” she murmurs. I feel my eyes open wide and my jaw drops a little, until she corrects herself. “Wait, nevermind you’re right at the bottom, in the “special guests” section. Sorry about that ma’am, here are your three tickets and accompanying backstage wristbands. Enjoy the show!”
I grin and blush, accepting them, “Thank you so much” I gush, rushing back over to my friends.
“I was in the special guests section of the list!” I say excitedly.
“That’s so cool” Riley says excitedly, taking a wristband from me, “This concert is going to be amazing!”
An hour later, a deafening roar fills the arena as the beginning chords of “Irresistible” fill the air. Riley, Britney, and I, along with everyone else in the arena, scream at the top of our lungs when the lights come up, revealing the guys. Patrick grins as he starts singing, taking his place at the front center of the stage, just a few feet in front of us. We scream and sing along, my heartbeat matching the beating of Andy’s drumming, and my throat already hurting from singing by the third song. At one point, in the middle of Dance, Dance, when Patrick does his famous heart move, he catches my eyes, smile growing wider as he sees I’m doing the motion with him. Pete walks over to play in front of us during My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark, winking at me when I catch his attention. The entire concert was amazing, and at one point I couldn’t help but cry. The lights went down as Patrick sat down at the piano. They played the Kids Aren’t Alright, Disloyal Order of the Water Buffaloes, and the one that really pulled on my heart strings, What A Catch, Donnie. It was when Patrick sang the first lines of What a Catch, Donnie that the tears came. I couldn’t help it, the emotion of the concert, my knowledge of what the song meant and realizing that people as wonderful as Pete and Patrick could suffer from so much pain all accumulated and suddenly tears were streaming down my face, even as I was singing and smiling . I was almost embarrassed, until Patrick glanced over. It was the end of the second verse when his eyes found mine in the crowd, full of emotion and even pain, and his voice even faltered in the slightest as he caught sight of me, crying and singing along, staring straight back at him. My heart swelled at the sight of him, and it was like we were the only two in the arena. But then he turned away, finishing the song. After that, they played several more songs, and then suddenly, it was over.
I was immediately filled with conflicting emotions. Half of me was already grieving over the fact the concert was over, but the other half of me knew it was only the beginning, and we got to go backstage next. We filed out of the pit, all holding hands like a kindergarten safety rope to make sure we didn’t get separated in the chaos following the concert. We followed the signs the beckoned to the backstage entrance. After several minutes we made it, standing in line behind several other fans who had won or bought passes. A large body guard checks our wristbands and stamps our hands, and then we’re all lead through a hallway to a room where a meet and greet is set up, although the guys haven’t arrived yet. The rest of the fans rush over to get in line, but I pull Riley and Britney over to a couch.
“What are you doing? Why aren’t we in line?” Riley asks, confused.
“Because my feet are killing me and we don’t need to go through the line anyway” I explain, rubbing my left foot.
“We don’t?” Britney asks, skeptical.
“No, they invited me, um, us here personally, so they’ll come talk to us once the rest of these fans have gotten their pictures and everything”
“Wow you sound confident” Riley huffs.
“I just..”
“It’s fine, just don’t get all high and mighty on us. It’s not like you’re someone special, you’re just a fan they happened to be nice too. Don’t let it go to your head” she spits out, dropping on the couch next to me and crossing her arms in annoyance.
“I wasn’t…I just mean that they’ll come talk to us after, I didn’t mean to sound snooty about it” I defend myself quietly. Before she has a chance to respond, Pete pops his head into the room, grinning. Everyone claps and cheers as him and the rest of the guys file into the room, sitting behind the table.
I smile in spite of myself as I see Patrick grin at the first girl, beckoning her to come forward. I watch the guys go through the line, taking pictures and signing autographs. Joe and Pete both wink when they catch my eyes, and Andy gives a cute little wave. Patrick looks over at me several times, and I swear I can see the sparkle in his eyes from where I sit.
“Patrick keeps looking at me” Riley whispers to Britney with a giggle. I deflate a little, realize that maybe I overplayed Patrick’s glances at me.
After a little more than an hour, the last giddy, excited fan waves goodbye and walks through the door. The guys all sigh, grinning and standing up. They walk over to us, and I smile as I see Patrick beeline straight for me.
He’s about to reach me, mouth open to say something, when Riley stops him.
“Oh my gosh Patrick you were incredible!” she gushes, holding out her hand, “I’m Riley by the way”
“Oh, thank you” he replies, a little thrown off by her advance.
I turn my attention to the other guys instead. “You guys were absolutely incredible! The show was phenomenal” I say, hugging each of the other three tightly.
“Nah,” Joe says, brushing off my comment.
“No seriously, you guys blew me away. I mean Joe your vocals on Hum Hallelujah? And Andy that crazy drum solo? And Pete with the bass? Oh my god you guys killed it!” I say earnestly.
“Wow we need to invite you more often, puff up our egos a little bit” Pete jokes, but pulls me into another hug, “Thanks (Y/N)”
Britney introduces herself, immediately attaching herself to Joe’s side. I glance over to see Riley still talking Patrick’s ear off. He catches my eyes and smiles. “Hey , uh, hold that thought?” he says politely to Riley, stepping away from her and walking over to me..
“So…” he says, standing in front of me and stuffing his hands in his pockets, “What’d you think?”
“It was amazing. I mean, I saw you guys once before a long time ago, but you get better and better every time. You guys are truly incredible” I respond immediately.
Patrick grins, pink coloring his cheeks, “Yeah?”
“Yeah” I say smiling, “I really loved the set you did on the piano”
“I saw that you were pretty into it “ he says with a kind smile, a joking expression in his eyes.
I blush immediately, “I was very emotionally invested, but it was beautiful and passionate, I think it was my favorite part”
“It’s my favorite too” Patrick replies quietly, like it’s our own personal secret.
I smile at him, opening my mouth to comment again when Riley butts back in.
“So Patrick, how many instruments do you play?” she asks, grabbing his bicep and batting her eyelashes at him. I resist the urge to roll my eyes.
“Oh, um, 5, normally or 6 on a good day” he says politely.
“Wow that’s so impressive!” she gushed.
“Thanks,” he says with a smile, eyes catching mine again “ SO, uh (Y/N), did you guys have any plans for right now?”
“No um-” I start.
“And what about languages? I heard you love them” Riley says over me.
Patrick looks at her confused, “Yeah I do. I only speak English fluently but I love Spanish, French, Japanese, and I know some italian”
“Wow” she says, giggling.
I actually roll my eyes this time, looking back at Patrick, “You were saying?”
“Yeah, we wanted to invite you to hang out with us for a while? Nothing fancy just a casual hang out”
“Yeah, please come (Y/N)” Andy pipes in
“It’ll be fun” Joe adds.
“Yeah you have to come” Pete pleads.
I laugh at them, “Of course, I’d-”
Riley butts in a third time. “So Patrick, do you happen to know american sign language?”
“Only a few words” he says, looking extremely confused.
“Perfect” she says, turning to me. Everyone looks at her in confusion.
She quickly waves her hand, drawing my eyes down as she starts signing.
“What is wrong with you? Stop hogging them!” she signs quickly.
“Don’t do that Riles, we’re not going to have a conversation right in front of them that they don’t understand. It’s rude” I say, annoyed at both her attempt to fight with me silently, and her words.
“What else am I supposed to do?” she signs angrily.
“I don’t know, speak in English so you don’t exclude everyone outside of the two of us?” I exclaim, refusing to sign.
“Fine” she says out loud, “ I said, stop hogging them!”
“You’re joking right? They’re people not toys, Riley, I’m not “hogging them””
“You kinda are, (Y/N)” Brittney comments.
“You’ve been so obsessed all day just because you’ve met them, and now you won’t even share them”
I see Patrick shift uncomfortably, looking at Pete, who only raises his eyebrows and looks confused.
“I’m sorry but they’re not just your little playthings. They’re real people, and they’re standing right here, and you’re being mean” I say angrily.
“I’m being mean? What about you? You’ve been acting snobbish all day. Like you can’t get over yourself” Riley spits out, crossing her arms.
“I can’t get over myself? Me? I had the chance to meet my favorite band, and the only thing you’ve done is try and ruin this for me! You’re just mad because Patrick isnt falling all over you like you wanted”
“Yeah well he’s not exactly crushing on you either sweetheart”
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about” I stutter, flushing red, eyes cutting over to Patrick who suddenly looks very interested in his shoes.
“Oh please, you’ve been making puppy dog eyes at him all day. You like him ,admit it. Well guess what, you’re nothing other then another fan to him. Once he moves on to the next show, he’ll forget all about you” she says venomously.
“Okay, that’s enough!” Pete steps in, thankfully saving me from having to respond
“Why are you being so nasty? I thought you guys were friends” Joe aks.
“We were, until she ditched us for you guys” Britney says, saying something for the first time in almost five minutes.
“The only reason I even met them is because you abandoned me at the fair!” I exclaim, fed up with her ridiculous attitude.
“Oh please you’re a big girl you could’ve handled it!”
“Enough!” Patrick yells, shocking everyone into silence. “We invited you because you were (Y/N)’s friends, but clearly you aren’t. I think you should leave” he says coldly, stepping in between them and me, crossing his arms.
“You’re kicking us out?” Riley asks in disbelief, “I thought you were the nice one”
“I’m nice to people who deserve it” he replies.
“We’re telling you to leave” Andy says, standing next to Patrick.
“But we will call security if we have to” Joe comments, adding himself to my human shield.
“Because (Y/N) isnt “just another fan”” Pete says, “She’s kind and smart and funny, and most importantly our friend. And to us, that means we protect her. So get out. Both of you”
Riley and Brittney stare at them in shock, before quietly grabbing their purses.
“Fine, we’re going” Riley says with a glare, “Good luck finding a ride home (Y/N)”
The guys all follow them to the door. As soon as they step out of it, the tears I had been struggling to hold back slowly streak down my cheeks. I stand there, silently crying with my arms crossed across my body, until the guys turn around. The angry looks melt from their faces as they see me. Andy crosses over to me first, crushing me into a hug. He doesn’t say anything, just hold me and rubs my back, before stepping back with a sad smile. Pete comes next, hugging me for a long time. “I’m so sorry they were so horrible. You deserve better. And for the record, we want you here, truly, for no other reason than we all really like you.” He whispers to me. I smile up at him, wiping my face and nodding.
“Don’t listen to what those skinny bitches said,” Joe says, also hugging me tightly, “They’re just jealous of how dope you are. Never let the haters get you down”
He grins at me and I actually laugh out loud, giggling at his comment as the others around us chuckles.
I look at Patrick, confused as to why he’s the only one who hadn’t hugged me.When he just looks at me, doesn’t step forward, I worry that he doesn’t like me anymore, not after seeing everything he did. But then, he does something that surprises me.
“Guys, can I have a minute alone with (Y?N)” he asks quietly.
The other guys agree heading out. “Just come find us when you guys are done” Pete says as he walks out.
Patrick nods, shutting the door behind them and turning back to me. We look at each other for a few seconds, saying nothing. He walks back towards me, and I move to him, and then we’re walking towards each other in a stereotypical movie-like fashion. When we collide he hugs me tightly, like he never wants to let me go. I let myself fall into his arms, tears finally flowing freely as I cling on to him.
“They were wrong” he says into my hair, still not letting me go, “About everything. They were wrong and horrible and vicious and I’m so so sorry if I caused any of it”
I push against his chest so he’ll pull away, and I look up at him. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine, I should’ve known this would end badly, Riley’s been acting bitter all day, I just never thought-’ I choke up at the thought of my best friend being so cruel to me.
Patrick smiles sadly and hugs me tightly again, pressing a kiss to my head. “You are the most interesting and beautiful woman I have ever met. And nothing has ever made me happier than seeing your face in the crowd tonight, and coming off stage knowing I would get to see you again.”
I smile into his shirt before pulling away and looking up into his eyes.
“You mean it?” I ask.
Patrick smiles at me, pulling my face close to his as he leans his forehead agaisnt mine.
“I would never lie to you” he whispers, his breath tickling my lips because of how close we were. We stay like that for several minutes, the closeness between us saying everything neither of us could put into words.
I finally relax, looking into his eyes with a smile as I wipe the last of my tears. I lean forward, instinctively pressing my lips to his cheek.
“Thank you” I say, only pulling away a few inches.
“For what?” he asks quietly, searching my eyes.
“For being you”
He smiles at me, leaning forward ever so slightly, slowly closing the distance between our lips until his soft lips press against mine. I kiss him back, gently placing my hand on the side of his face. We both smile into the kiss, pulling away, after a few seconds. Patrick’s cheeks flush the slightest of pink as he reaches up,softly tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “They were right about one thing” he whispers
“What?” I ask, confused.
“I’m not crushing on you” he says. The words seem harsh, yet the smile remains on his face and the sparkle shines in his eyes.
“Y-you’re not?” I ask, not understanding.
“No, because it’s more than that” he explains, softly kissing me again. “ I don’t just like you, I’m falling for you”

‘Underway’ or ‘under way’?
Q: I’d love to understand why it’s apparently now acceptable to cast “under way” as “underway”—one word, not two. “Negotiations are underway” just seems wrong!
A: Yes, “under way,” an expression that began life as two words, is increasingly—and more popularly—being written as one. Today you can use either version and be in respectable company.
More and more standard dictionaries are recognizing the one-word version. In fact, two prominent American dictionaries, The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (5th ed.) and Webster’s New World College Dictionary (5th ed.) now recommend “underway” exclusively.
The term began life as a two-word adverbial phrase composed of the preposition “under” and the noun “way.”
When first recorded in the early 17th century, the expression was used in a nautical sense. It comes from the Dutch onterweg (“on the way”), and was adopted into English at a time when the Netherlands ruled the sea.
A ship was said to be “under way,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary, when it was moving freely through the water as opposed to being anchored, moored, or aground.
The earliest written example in the OED is a seafaring usage from Richard Hawkins’s “Observations in His Voiage into the South Sea” (1622):
“The windermost shippe, by opening her sayle, may be vpon the other before shee be looked for, either for want of steeridge, not being vnder way, or by the rowling of the Sea.”
In later use, the OED explains, the term became broader. It was used with reference to other sorts of travel, as well as to anything in progress.
Again, the earlier citations use two words, as in this Oxford citation from Sacred Geography (1671) by Joseph Moxon, a printer and globe-maker:
“That night he went to Bethania, and lodged there…. And in the Morning again to Jerusalem, where under way he cursed the Fig Tree, which presently withered.” (The reference is to a passage in Matthew 21, where Jesus curses a fig tree that has no fruit.)
And this example is from a letter written in Paris by Thomas Jefferson in 1788, on the eve of the French Revolution: “While our second revolution is just brought to a happy end with you, yours here is but cleverly under way.”
But by the late 1700s and early 1800s the one-word spelling “underway” was also being used, nautically and otherwise, as in these OED citations:
“We shall get underway in a jiffy, the pilot’s coming on board.” (From George Brewer’s novel The Motto, 1795.)
“As soon as the vessel was got underway, the captain discovered the money had been stolen.” (From a weekly magazine, Lady’s Miscellany, Nov. 16, 1811.)
“It was about day-break when the caravan got underway at Trebizond.” (From John Galt’s novel Earthquake, 1820.)
The OED has this to say about the spellings: “The one-word spelling has become increasingly common since the mid 20th cent. The two-word spelling continues to be recommended by most usage guides.”
Actually, that last statement is no longer true. Usage guides today either lean toward “underway” or leave the choice up to the writer.
For example, the fourth and latest edition of Garner’s Modern English Usage (2016) encourages the one-word spelling:
“In the phrases get underway (= to get into motion) and be underway (= to be in progress), the term is increasingly made one word, and it would be convenient to make that transformation, which has been underway since the 1960s, complete in all uses of the word.”
Jeremy Butterfield, in the fourth edition of Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage (2015), says the “mysterious gravitational force” that earlier brought “any way” and other adverbial phrases together has been doing the same to “under way” since the 1930s.
With dictionaries at odds over whether to use one word or two, Butterfield says, it’s up to the writer to decide: “Follow your nose or your gut, whichever is the more prominent organ.”
Even 15 years ago, Merriam-Webster’s Guide to English Usage noted that the term was increasingly written as one word, “underway.”
The editors of the 2002 edition added: “It is quite possible that this solid form will eventually predominate over the two-word form, but for the time being under way is still somewhat more common.”
Again, that last statement is now outdated. The NOW Corpus, a database of 5.6 billion words published in web-based newspapers and magazines between 2010 and the present, shows “underway” ahead of “under way” by more than two to one. As of this writing, “underway” appeared in roughly 112,000 articles during this period, compared with 45,000 for “under way.”
The growing acceptance of “underway” is no surprise. Virtually all other compounds formed with “under” are single words: “underdog,” “underage,” “undersecretary,” “underprivileged,” “underground,” “underfed,” “underdeveloped,” and so on. (The only exceptions we can think of are hyphenated adjectives occurring before a noun and beginning with “under-the-,” where the last element is “counter” or “table” or “radar.”)
You can also expect to see the “underway” version in many newspapers. The Associated Press Stylebook, widely used by journalists, had long recommended “under way” for “virtually all uses.” But since 2013 it has recommended “underway: One word in all uses.”
Similarly, The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage, which had previously recommended “under way (adv.),” now has “underway,” without a label, in its fifth edition, published in 2015.
Still, if you prefer to use “under way,” you can do so with a clear conscience.
Merriam-Webster Unabridged has “under way” for the adverb, “underway” for the adjective.
This brings us to the subject of terminology. When is this term an adverb, and when is it an adjective? On this issue, as it happens, chaos reigns.
The Oxford English Dictionary labels it an adverb in all uses. This is true even in examples like “the dance was underway,” where it looks more like a predicate adjective because it follows a form of the verb “be” and complements the noun.
In the other camp are three standard British dictionaries—Macmillan, Longman, and Cambridge—which regard “underway” as an adjective exclusively, even after the verb “get.” (All three spell it as one word, though Cambridge gives “under way” as a variant.)
Apparently those three dictionaries regard “get” in this case as a copula or linking verb, like “become” or ‘”is.”
Webster’s New World, too, labels “underway” solely as an adjective, though it doesn’t give examples.
American Heritage labels “underway” as both adverb and adjective—spelled one word in both cases—but unfortunately it doesn’t give examples either.
Merriam-Webster Unabridged, as we said, labels it both an adverb and an adjective, but with differing spellings. Its adverbial examples include both “gets under way” and “was well under way,” so in that respect it agrees with the OED.
The only adjectival examples in the Unabridged have “underway” immediately before a noun, as in “underway refueling.” But in fact the term rarely pre-modifies a noun; it almost always comes afterward, generally after a form of the verb “get” or “be.”
M-W likens the word to “afoot” when used adverbially, but “afoot” is generally a predicate adjective, as in “the game is afoot” or “a conspiracy was afoot.”
We would argue that in sentences like “The project was underway,” or “The project underway was a costly one,” the term is an adjective. In that first example, where it follows a form of the verb “be,” it’s a predicate adjective. And in the second, it’s an adjective that post-modifies a noun.
Whether or not if you continue to spell it “under way,” the term has graduated from its beginnings as a two-word adverbial phrase.
After all, former two-word adverbial phrases like “under cover” and “on line” are now used legitimately as adjectives (and generally written as one word).
Finally, we’ve written before about the term “under weigh,” which originated as a variant of the earlier “under way.” The variant spelling is now accepted as standard, though it began as a misspelling due to an erroneous association with the phrase “weigh anchor.” (The verb “weigh” in the phrase means to raise or lift.)

THE SWEATER
I walked through the front door, expecting to see my house as it had always been, a serene setting of spiritual and physical warmth, security and protection from the outside world. As I closed the door, something appeared that was not only unexpected, but presented the stark reality as to how my life had permanently changed. My daughter’s blue sweater was lying on the back of the sofa, not placed there precisely as it was meant to be but awkwardly like it was a last minute thing forgotten about. It then hit me like a ton of bricks. She had left the sweater, perhaps inadvertently, as a marker that she was leaving, not only the sweater, but our house and our life together as we had known it. And the life that I had known for 25 years as the father of three terrific human beings.
Of what value is a simple sweater? Obviously, it can supply warmth on a frigid winter day. Even on warmer days it has cosmetic benefit for those who are vain enough to feel the need for it. A sweater, thrown haphazardly on the back of a sofa, has little to offer other than bringing to mind fond memories, heartache and a future yet to be lived.
It all started in 1969 when my older son, Chris, was born. A game changer for sure. After 90 days, I began to realize why some fathers left home after a child was born. Too much to handle, they say, to justify an unforgivable act of abandonment. But the sleepless nights and the radical change of schedule finally passed; life went on and eventually portended a new and exciting existence.
Two years later, Mike was born. Now THAT was an experience. Thirteen months passed before he slept through the night. You think Chinese water torture or waterboarding was rough? Not even close. How bad was I growing up to deserve this punishment?
Five years later, a daughter, Katy, was born. I had missed much of the boys’ early life due to business commitments which I mistakenly valued as more important than dealing with home life. When Katy’s mother became pregnant, I realized that a new opportunity to be a good father was in the offing. And I committed myself to the task. The blur of the previous 5-7 years wiped out what should have been treasured years as I missed this formative time with my two sons. The Good Lord had given me another chance and I was not about to squander it. When Katy was three, it seemed like my memory was incapable of recalling life before she was born.
Recognizing that I had not been a devoted father before Katy was born, I committed myself to the task of being a better father to all three of the kids. In 1984, the mother of the three children and I split up, the children being left in my care, other than for visitations allowed with their mother. Now the real job of parenting hit me like a ton of bricks. While the organization of the household generally improved, the load placed upon me was enormous. Looking back, it is hard to comprehend how difficult it was and how I possibly could have been up to the task. My parents helped out and my sister-in-law, Neill Ann, was a Godsend in emergencies. After a year had passed, I was able to hire a wonderful woman, Pearl Wiegand, who came in at 3pm three days a week, did the laundry and cooked the dinner. That way, when the children and I arrived at home around 7pm, we could sit down and eat, as opposed to my having to start the dinner, eat and then do the dishes, which previously, before Pearl, would take well into the evening.
The largest obstacle to running the household properly was knowing of and coordinating various commitments that each of the kids had. I finally figured out that I needed a huge calendar to hang in the kitchen, which displayed each and every obligation that all of us had, including me. So we could not pass by the calendar without all of us knowing exactly where each of us was supposed to be and when we were supposed to be there. Katy was seven when the split occurred and her birthday party obligations to her classmates were prolific. Many a time it was about 8pm or a little later that she advised me of a birthday party that was to occur the next day. This entailed going to some store that sold gifts for little girls late in the evening, getting a card, and wrapping the gift so that it would be ready to go when she was leaving for school the next morning. After a few of these episodes, I took Katy to Service Merchandise and we bought about 10-15 stuffed animals so that we would be ready to go at a moment’s notice when birthdays occurred. Since we now had the calendar, emergencies were less prevalent but when they did occur, we were ready.
When the split occurred, Chris was 14 and in first year of high school, Mike was 12 and in seventh grade and Katy was 7 in second grade. Obviously, they all had school age commitments and social commitments as well. Grading periods came and went, most of which required some input from me to school officials or from school officials to me. There were more contacts than I would have liked and some of these were somewhat acrimonious. There were a couple of teachers that the boys had who lacked a bare modicum of common sense along with other failures of good teaching. I was not able to correct this problem before the boys graduated. I had much better luck with the teachers that Katy had. To this day I do not know with any degree of certainty whether this had to do with the caliber of the teachers or the caliber of the student(s).
One teacher, who taught Chris in fifth grade, was very sincere and tried her best to teach Chris and the other kids in the class. But Chris was what we would now call ADHD, although not clinically so. He was very active to the extent that chaos reigned in the room, and Chris always seemed to be in the eye of the storm. I was opposed to medicating him or any child but a solution needed to be crafted for the benefit of Chris, the teacher and the rest of the class. Chris was quite a good swimmer and his uncle was the coach of the Columbus Academy swim team where Chris was in school. The swim team practiced at 6:30am and had breakfast in the school cafeteria after practice. Chris’ uncle was willing to have Chris practice with the swim team with a twofold goal: improve Chris as a swimmer and provide an outlet for his over-abundant energy. So we got the poor kid up at 5:30am every school day and I drove him to swim practice. A snail could have made it from my car to the school natatorium faster than Chris as he trudged along. After six weeks of this torture, we had another meeting with his teacher who was overjoyed. Her smile beaming, she said that Chris was now her favorite student; he was just so, so tired!!
Chris growing up was like my own early life being replicated before my very eyes and gave me some insight into how patient my parents must have been. Traffic tickets, car accidents, and school expulsions were the order of the day in my teenage years. The school had a mini-bio on each graduating senior in 1957 and mine simply said: “The boy whose car has no steering wheel.” Very apropos. All was not bad though. Out of 72 graduating seniors, I was the absolute TOP man in the bottom fifth of the class! But I made it, thank the Good Lord.
Chris and Mike, having been bitter enemies in their early growing up years, became fast friends in high school. This was quite a relief after wondering for years if their lives would end with a shootout or a machete slashing. Most days after school the boys had athletic practice and I had to go to Gahanna after work to pick them up. This added about 30 minutes to my long workday but I had no choice. One of their classmates, Maurice Saah, typically would not have a ride home and he lived near Northland shopping center. Courtesy and respect mandated that we take Maurice home. However this required us to drive into the area of the shopping center, which entailed heavy traffic and was quite a bit out of our way. This added an additional 30 minutes to what would have been only a 20-minute drive otherwise. As I approached the school, I fervently prayed that Maurice would not be there with Chris and Mike so that we would just have a quick jaunt but, alas, he was there 90% of the time. I typically would have music playing on the radio, something classic, soft and smooth, sounding good after a long work day, which the boys always objected to as they felt that their music was clearly superior. After the boys moaned and griped about my music, I suggested that Maurice decide what music would be most appropriate. Maurice without hesitation always replied: “I like your music Mr. Connor.” As tired as I always was, and as much as I wished that I could go straight home from work, looking back, I treasure those trips with all three of them and would give anything to have just one more ride with them, all the while playing Maurice’s favorite music.
Between birth and age 18, Chris had 8, yes 8, fractures in bones from the tip of his right fingers to his right shoulder. While this is hard to believe, it is absolutely true and proves what a high pain threshold he has. One of the fractures was to his right upper arm and it was compound. Jack Unverferth, his orthopedic surgeon, advised me that he had to maneuver the upper arm to insert it so that it would fit together normally with the stump of the arm coming out of the shoulder. He said that he did this without any kind of anesthetic and Chris handled it without complaint. Jack had performed this maneuver many times and was astounded that he was able to do this with Chris taking it like a walk in the park.
Chris finished high school and matriculated at Ohio State. There were few more dismal days in my life than that day that I had to take Chris to the dormitory, which was one of the two towers at Ohio State. When I say towers, skyscraper is more apropos. It was more like a 10 story dungeon than dormitory and it was extremely austere. Chris had always been a pretty tough kid, able to deal with any adversity, but this was pretty rough on his old Dad, to leave him there among what appeared to be a pretty rough crowd. When I returned to my car, I was lower than a snake’s belly. Today, at Ohio State, dorms include workout facilities, cooking facilities, a swimming pool and other amenities. My kids were born 30 years too soon.
Human life is a saga, regardless of who you are or what you do. Being a parent is a saga multiplied by one thousand. No one gets a pass. We all have our crosses to bear. Sometimes the child and the parent both bear the same cross. Mike, being the inventive genius that he is, had murals on all four walls of his bedroom and a burglar alarm on his door to keep his siblings out. As the summer wound down in 1990 and he was preparing to leave for college, he devised a replica of an Ohio Driver license. This was not with the intent of defrauding the government but simply the challenge of creating the document that looked real. Mike photographed the document and took the film to the store to have it developed. (This was prior to cell phones). Apparently the local shop that developed the film that he took it to did not get the humor of the situation and called the cops, whose sense of humor was even less apparent. And Mike’s sense of humor was non-existent when the cops took him away in handcuffs. His father’s humor was transformed into rage when he had to go to the cop shop to get his son released. This episode was part of some of the darkest days of parenting that I experienced. It turned out ok for all of us but was bad news while it lasted.
Two instances challenged Mike’s integrity and commitment to honesty. One involved tampering with a photo of Marilyn Monroe that had been hung in the school hallway as part of a 1950’s display. The photo was modified by some students to expose her breasts. Mike was present when this was done but was not the main perp. When the felony was exposed, Mike admitted his role in it but would not disclose the identities of the others, who lied about their role. The middle school head punished all of the kids equally, while Mike felt that he should get some credit for being honest from the beginning. I spoke to the head and advised him that he committed a major mistake by not rewarding a student for a two-fold value system involving both honesty to authority and loyalty to his friends. This caused Mike to question the ability of authority figures to render just verdicts.
The other situation was when Mike was involved in a game wherein one of his classmates was injured. An insurance settlement was at issue depending on how the facts played out. Several of the participants misrepresented the facts to favor the settlement. Mike knew that the actual facts did not support the settlement. An attorney tried to get Mike to change his story but he refused, regardless of the amount of pressure put upon him.
While Mike was a little guy, who could predict that his chosen profession would be related to the computer industry. When he was nine years old, his brother, cousin and he went to a weeklong computer seminar in Cleveland. I took the three of them to the seminar on Sunday and went to get them the following Saturday. Mike wanted to stay for another week but the other two had had enough and were ready to go home. I inquired of the school whether I could leave him there for another week but was advised that he was welcome for anther week but I would have to take him home and return him the next day, which I did. Well it turned out that the teachers recruited Mike to assist them in teaching the curriculum to the new kids that came that week. This portended a potential career but most of us just assumed that it was a childhood fixation that would subside with maturity.
Enter Mr. Winslow, one of Mike’s teachers at Academy. Fortunately or unfortunately, Mike knew more about computers than Mr. Winslow, who was non-plussed by Mike’s challenge to his authority. So more trips to the school to try to smooth out this relationship. Mike got through the class but not without some scars, which I tease him about to this day.
Mike went to Miami in Ohio and this was a much more refreshing venue than what Chris had. His dorm was bright, well lighted and he was on a low floor where you could see the grass outside without looking through a telescope. Mike had some setbacks at Miami, primarily with lodging and fraternity issues but overall had a great education there, which allowed him to succeed in his chosen field.
In spite of his austere living conditions in his first year of college, Chris survived and flourished at least socially if not academically. He had always been a survivor, taking life as it came and college was no exception. However, his grade point after his first year had more decimal points than numbers in it. So we had a heart to heart talk. The upshot of that was that I would not pay any more tuition until his grades were at least passing. The risk to me was that he would say “sayonara,” never to be seen again. I gulped a few times but true to form, he took it like a man, buckled down, paid his own tuition and “Great Balls of Fire,” made the Dean’s list. He had what it took to get the job done when it counted.
After a few educational hiccups with the boys, they both graduated in 1995, seven years for Chris and five for Mike. Katy (now called Kate by request) had entered high school in 1991 and graduated in 1995, as the boys were finishing college. They had both been away from home since they began college and did not return after graduation. Despite the struggles, they succeeded both academically and socially, more socially than academically. The good news is that, due to the extremely high cost of their private high school, the costs of everything for their college education was a reduction in my financial outlay. Not to be replicated by Kate.
After eighth grade at Columbus School for Girls, Kate decided to enroll at Columbus Academy, which, for the first time, admitted girls in high school. So she was indeed a pioneer. The boys there had never gone to school with girls and had no idea how to interact with them. This resulted in unbelievably bizarre conduct by the boys. To add insult to injury, the teachers were even worse, treating the girls like zombies, aliens, or some other creatures that they were experiencing for the first time. There was truly discrimination present during the entire four years that Kate was there. Athletic facilities for middle school boys were superior to those of varsity high school female athletes. This resulted in facilities that were not only inferior, but actually were unsafe, resulting in injuries to some of the girls during athletic contests.
All three kids experienced athletic success. The football team won the State championship when Chris was a senior and Mike a sophomore. And Kate, almost by accident, ended up on the cross-country team, winning almost every meet in which she competed and finishing 37th out of several hundred runners in the state meet. Also, in Kate’s case, due to her excellence in cross-country, she was recruited by the coach at Vassar, one of the premier educational facilities in America, where she had a wonderful career, establishing life long friends with teammates and coaches, as well as her eventual husband. There were no scholarships available so the cost of one year at Vassar was equal to all four years of education for the boys combined!!
So in late summer of 1995, I rented a van, loaded it up, and headed off to Poughkeepsie with Kate in tow. (Chris went to college with just a suitcase, Mike with a small trunk and Kate with a cargo van). The seven-year progression of education and progeny is quite remarkable. It is similar to when I went to college, compared to my brother and sister, both of whom received royal treatment, while I did not even have a dorm room to sleep in when my parents dropped me off at college.
Kate and I arrived the night before she was to report to school, stayed in a motel and arrived bright and early at her dorm, one of the very first students on campus to arrive. The schedule was to get her settled in and, at 3pm, the parents were to meet with the President of the College for a briefing as to what their little darlings would be going through over the weekend (this was a Friday). When the President told us what a powerful freshman class this was, incredibly high SAT scores, published authors, musicians who had performed at Carnegie Hall, my heart sank as I wondered how my little girl was possibly going to match up with such accomplished classmates. Of course, she performed incredibly as she scored among the highest in her class, was captain of her cross country team, developed personal friendships with some of her professors, lifelong friendships, not to mention her husband, etc.
When it was time for me to leave for the meeting with the college President, Kate walked me to the top of the stairway to say a final goodbye before she started her college career. As we hugged each other, she said: “Dad, this is the only thing that you have not prepared me for, saying good-bye to you.”
After leaving Vassar, I drove to Philadelphia for the weekend to visit my sister on the way home. So I did not arrive home until Monday afternoon after the drive from Philly. I parked my car in the garage and walked in through the front door. There, thrown over the back of the sofa, was her sweater. It was a signal, a message, that my life would never be the same. The final calling of parenthood was over; that door had closed. While I knew her leaving was coming and had anticipated it, the graphic nature of the sweater, not actually Kate herself but a remnant of her, made the clear point that she was indeed gone!
About one month later, I secretly went to Vassar for her first cross country meet and surprised her in the cafeteria at 7am on Saturday morning as she came in to eat breakfast. She had called my home the night before while I was on my way to Vassar and left a curt message that she was not happy with me for not being available to give her a little pep talk before her first college meet. Both of us got quite a laugh over that one. This would be the first of many visits to Vassar for meets, parents’ weekends and other events. In fact, I got to know the cashier in the cafeteria on a first name basis due to my many visits there.
Midway through the fall semester, they had a one-week break and Kate came home. When she was ready to return, we hugged each other, both crying, as she said that she did not want to go back but she knew she had to. I responded that she is crying now because she has to go back but in two years she will be crying because she would not want to leave her friends to come home. Sure enough, at the end of her sophomore year, she cried all the way home.
All of the above occurred many years ago. The kids are now moving toward middle age and are living life to the fullest. I am left with wonderful memories, great treasures that fill my life with joy. The sweater story is one that stands out as it represents such a critical transition in my life.
