The bow tie was Pierre Berton's sartorial signature. I grew up seeing his wise and kindly face above it on book jackets and TV shows. With classic histories like "The Last Spike" and his children's book, "The Land of Og" and multiple CBC Television shows, he addressed multiple generations and in many ways stood for a certain period of Canadian arts, letters and entertainment - though he was always a bit more mischievous and funky than his deep resumé suggested and I think the ties were a hint of that.⁠ ⁠ Canadian authors today can apply to stay for 3 months at his little bungalow on Writer's Row in Dawson City Yukon - thanks to his gift to the Yukon Arts Council and the administration of the Writer's Trust of Canada. It's just down the street from Jack London's cabin - which, you might recall from earlier in this series - is also part of Voyageur. The Canadian publishing world is populated by some pretty colourful characters. I was fortunate that my friend Bill Richardson introduced me to this one. Scott McIntyre - pictured here with his wife Corky - arranged to meet me in the deli underneath the Royal York Hotel for a coffee in 2007 on a business trip from Vancouver. We sat down, I told him about the project and showed him some of the photos by Doug Nicholson and Sandor Fizli that would help tell the story of Voyageur and he just said: "Let's do it!". I said, "Really? That's it?" "Yeah", he said, "I love it!". And so the process began. Over the next year and a bit, I worked with an amazing team from D&M - including editors Scott Steedman, Peter Cocking and Peter Norman, designer Naomi MacDougall, publicist Emiko Morita and many others. We launched the book in June of 2009 at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto with support from the Luminato Festival and This Is Not a Reading Series. The book has since sold close to 10,000 copies but it's in danger of going out of print. If you don't have a copy already, perhaps this Christmas season is a great time to get one for yourself or someone else who loves the impossible project of Canada. I started this Instagram project on March 26th, 2019 - focussing each week, one by one, of every component that makes up Voyageur, those mounted on the strap, those embedded in the Calton case, the stories behind those elements and the stories that have flowed out of project as it has travelled across Canada and beyond. We're down to the wire now. Just four more pieces to go ending up with a very special announcement for the final piece at the end of January.⁠ ⁠ But since the holiday time is upon us in this strangest of years, I thought I'd make a pitch for a great gift idea: my book about the project published in 2009 by Douglas & McIntyre. With the exception of pieces added to the case or strap since the year of publication, it includes details about all the pieces you've met so far over the course of this Instagram series as well as my reflections on the origins, travels and meaning of this project - all presented in a spectacular and innovative way that won an Alcuin Society Award for book designer Naomi MacDougall. OK, I promised an at least MILDLY Pierre Berton-related portrait to wrap up this week's series.⁠ ⁠ Although Berton was born in Whitehorse and his Writer's Trust of Canada retreat is in Dawson City, in the 1940s, Berton and his wife Janet founded a kind of artist's colony in the village of Kleinburg ON and lived their for the rest of their lives. Though the village no longer the retreat from Toronto it once was, it's where the Berton's are buried, it's home to the recently opened Pierre Berton Heritage Centre and there's even a Pierre Berton Blvd. Kleinburg is also home to the McMichael Gallery, which has other connections to the Six String Nation project, and where this portrait of friend-of-the-project Mark Logan was taken following our presentation there in 2011.⁠ ⁠ Also, Mark is wearing a scarf. Kind of a very over-sized bow tie.⁠ ⁠ (Wow. The second and third posts in my weekly series typically feature related portraits, candid shots or musical moments related to the piece from the guitar, case or strap. In this case, there's not much to offer (though I do have a mildly related portrait coming up in the next post).⁠ ⁠ I do recall very clearly following Amy Millan's performance with Voyageur at Harbourfront Centre's Canadian Voices Festival back in 2009, that I was chatting with Amy on the lawn behind the stage after the show when Peggy Anne Berton came up and introduced herself. She had donated her father's bow tie months before and had yet to see the results in the Calton case. She held the guitar for a moment and checked out the case and was truly lovely about it but there was not a camera in sight. Alas.⁠ ⁠ Instead, I offer this picture of the beaver bow tie created in honour of Pierre Berton for the Canada's History Society online store.
