Baguio City: The happy place I want to visit, You should too!
When I was a child, I always hear the word Baguio from my parents and relatives. It is just funny to think that I used to think that Baguio was a typhoon, in tagalog 'bagyo'. I always hear from my mother and relatives using this dialect that I don't understand. Growing up, I always asked about Baguio and I found out that it was my mother's place. And my mom's dialect she always uses when talking to our relatives is called Ilocano. I came to think that I want to see the place where my mama grew up, and because of the good comments I have heard about Baguio, how beautiful it is, how refreshing and cool the air, and how simple their lives were. Baguio, also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. Established in around 1846 by the early spanish colonizers of the pine-covered highlands of the Benguet Province. As time passes by, Baguio was discovered and became the eight ancient wonder in the world.
After this pandemic, our whole family plans to visit and travel around Luzon, my Mom’s place and especially the summer capital. Baguio, on the Philippines’ Luzon island, is a mountain town of universities and resorts. Also called the “City of Pines,” it is particularly popular in summer due to unusually cooler weather. At its center is Burnham Park, with gardens and a lake. Nearby, Baguio Cathedral, completed in 1936, has a rose-hued exterior. The main thoroughfare is Session Road, lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment options.
Burnham Park is the place where people visit more. You can ride a bike, take a boat ride, or just walk around the park and enjoy the breathtaking place. It always feels like it is your first time whenever you visit it again and again. I remember my Mom and Sister’s voice reminiscing experiences there by even writing this. Oh, how excited I am for those bike and boat rides!
After spending time seeing the place, you will definitely be hungry and get something to eat especially in its cold weather, right? right!
The restaurants there have delicious foods that you will never forget. One of the most popular dishes is the bulalo steak sage, that warms your stomach in cold weather, it is very delicious! Here is the list of the 8 must-try bites and sips that are distinctly Baguio; Baguio Longganisa, Dipasupil, Strawberry Shortcake, Vizco's. Ube Jam, Strawberry Jam & Peanut Brittle, Good Shepherd, Raisin Bread, Baguio Country Club, Hot Chocolate, Choco-Late de Batirol, and Message In A Bottle, Baguio Craft Brewery.
Let's try the desserts!
"Great snacks while waiting for the bus.", "I just love these belgian waffles!" you can really tell how delicious it is! Well, Belgian waffles are ranked no. 4 out of 6 famous bakeries in Baguio. The highly recommended dessert shop in Baguio is the "Pamana lechon tsokolateria cafe", a chocolate shop located in Igorot Stairs, upper Rd. Actually you can just walk and not ride anymore because the cafe is just near the park.
Woh! I was suddenly hungry again hehe. Okay, let's move on!
I am pretty sure that you always hear the word 'Igorot', I am one of those called Igorot when in fact I am part of one of the various tribes which is Ifugao nevertheless say since people have kept on generalizing . Sometimes, people make fun of using this word and even use it to tease people who are dark, ignorant or just for stupid reasons. But in reality they just don't have any idea how wealthy they are in terms of money and of course in culture. I think the world has no idea on how they look right now, I don't know with you but do I look like someone you imagine a Igorot would look? Check my account and my whole "angkan" or clan's account (email me if you disagree, winks). Not much of the people and Filipinos know but this tribe have contributed so much in the country's overall food supply, like you know where does much of the "gulay" (vegetable) comes from. Igorots have massively influenced the Philippine's Agriculture. Though, true enough not all of those who farm are greatly blessed as much as the overall farmers but here in the Philippines as we know, most of the looked down poorest are such.
The Igorot are any of various ethnic groups in the mountains of northern Luzon, Philippines, all of whom keep, or have kept until recently, their traditional religion and way of life. Some live in the tropical forests of the foothills, but most live in rugged grassland and pine forest zones higher up. They are clustered in the Cordillera region of Luzon. It is true that they are famous for rice-terrace farming but saying that some of them have been known to be cannibals in the past is an exaggeration which only downgrades them. While the rice terraces were important to the Ifugao economy, they also served a cultural function, requiring intensive cooperation among the people. By the early 21st century, however, the number of Ifugao in the area had greatly diminished as many migrated to more urban centres. Meanwhile, Ifugao is a province in the Philippines situated in the Cordillera Administrative Region., which I have mentioned earlier we are part of or where my Mom is originally from.
But it would be great to give some amazing facts about igorots:
1.) The first ever Filipino to ride an airplane is an igorot - In february 1912, during a manila carnival celebration, Governor Walter Hare invited 120 tribes men from the cordilleras. One of the tribe's men named Gagaban who is an igorot chief accepted the American pilot Lee Hammond's invitation to fly with him. Before Gagaban, no other native had ever flown as a passenger.
2.) The first ever igorot beauty queen that captured the heart of manila - At just age 13, Eveline Chainus Guirey was the most famous beauty who cost a massive sensation in Manila in 1902. She was the eldest of the ten children of the Guirey family. She was the youngest beauty ever in the history of Philippines Manila carnival.
3.) The Igorots were never slaves by the spaniards because they fought for their independence - Contrary to the history textbooks that are commonly used in schools in the country which are stating , "We can never know the history of the FIlipino people during the Spanish period because they were slaves to the Spaniards or at least forced to play the role of slaves." The Igorots were never actually slaves of the Spaniard nor did they play the role of slaves. On the contrary of these books, Spanish records make it clear that they fought for their independence with every means at their disposal for 3 centuries and that resistance to invasion was deliberate, self-conscious and was continuous.
Additional Trivia would be that originally slash-and-burn farmers, they have since begun to practice more sustainable forms of farming. The Isneg are also known as good fishers, and have a penchant for coffee. Kalinga. The Kalinga tribes are perhaps the most diplomatic of all the Igorot.
Strawberry picking completes Baguio tourist’s experience!
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet-- This capital town of Benguet not only receives a spillover of the tourists who go to Baguio but also a visit here completes the experience of the visitors to the country’s summer capital, through its strawberry picking activity. Strawberries in Baguio are the best. Let us not forget strawberry picking!
What is your happy place? Where is that certain place you can consider as your epitome of tranquility? Well for me that would be family and that makes me want to make Baguio one of those I can call my wonderland. A place where I can also take not just a lot of instagramable pictures to post or put on my day stories but memories stored in my heart that I could share with my future children (forgive my futuristic approach, laughs). Memorabilias that I could gather with my family, Oh how wonderful it is to be able to witness and experience such culture and sights that have not just cultivated a lot of inspiration not just around the country but the entire world. Just imagine that historic park that couldn’t even be compared to the famous parks in other countries or how about that luscious strawberries that you can pick on your own. I don’t know about you but one thing this pandemic has made me realize is to live to the fullest, it would be great that we could go back and see the world or visit some of its God given majestic place nevertheless it would be greater to be able to see your own country’s tourist destination. I mean, we can not be just a tourist to other countries, right? Let us go ahead and visit to experience our very own. My very own, Baguio! Voila!

“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual” Aisha Blo
In the current modern world where communication and information dissemination infinitely flows within the cosmic space of the internet and its mainstream social media platforms. Individuals who dwells inside the boundaries of the ‘World Wide Web’ and rely on the pieces of information by which countless people have encoded, either from a professional, an amateur, or trolls of the net, there is no knowing inside the anonymous space of the internet. What is the truth? Who is to be trusted? Media is filled with both amusement and apprehension. Hence, being a media and information literate individual who knows how to efficiently discern information, filter out prejudiced opinions from factual points, and produce sound information is a tremendously valuable feat to avoid the conspiracies happening beyond our knowledge and the contents that merely aims to mislead the mass away from the actuality and verity of essential events happening in our world.
A person who is ignorant of these facts and is not a media and information literate, who takes media and internet lightly and blind to the dangers lurking within media platforms is highly likely to fall victim to artifice, misleading information and pseudo data. Some people may think that the internet and media is harmless, thinking that these helped people to ease work and served as a medium to aid people in need for knowledge and a means for communication, which is an undeniable fact. However, media is a two-faced structure where people utilize as a tool for diverse affairs, yet behind that screen is where conspiracies hide and internal conflict arise. Countless issues in the present involve the media and the internet, issues created by mere human interference, preconception and delusive contents amassed by the people who are misled and aim to mislead people clueless of what is real.

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”  -Karl Wyndyll M. Lamban and Jullien Lorilli Angcla
As we lived in a modernized world, it’s no question that media has a role to play for the government and vice versa. Both media and the government are known to be influential and dominant as they have the ability to manipulate and deceive individuals, changing the way they think about matters which sometimes make them stay neutral in issues or pick sides. With this, the media and the government appear to be in dispute by the existence of biases and false accusations of whatever published news reports and any information that is being shared all around. Some journalists would be opposed to what the government is doing, and on the other hand, the government would insist, as it is misleading for them. As a result, the government issues claims then would contradict the media, and vice versa. Leading the two being connected together in a love-hate relationship.
If both the media and the government have times of disagreements, let us not forget that without the media, there will be no accountability in the country, as media acts as our watchdog letting us know of what's going on. And without the government, people will not be directed on the right path. It would even be hard for us to think about solving problems and handling downhearted situations without leaders guiding us. Without the two, life would really be more difficult. The government will not be able to guide the people on its own, so they need a helping hand, and the media is supporting the side. On the other way around, the media will not make sense if there is nothing for people to be informed about. As to whatever problems we are facing, it’s the two that are linked together to continuously make us stay aware.

“READY PLAYER ONE”
A Movie Analysis
“Ready Player One," is a story that gives a picture of a dismal 2045 era, where most people live in squalor, choosing to spend most of their time online in a virtual universe called the Oasis. The movie revolves around Wade Watts who lives in the "Stacks" of Columbus, Ohio -- a tower of mobile homes -- and spends every spare moment logged in. He lives in a futuristic world where everyone — the young, old, poor, and rich — spends the vast majority of their time in virtual reality (VR), to avoid the dystopian real world where poverty and despair run rampant as a result of global warming and overpopulation.
When the creator of the OASIS, James Halliday passes away, he wills his virtual world and its accompanying fortune worth a half-trillion dollars to the player who can find the Easter egg hidden deep within the endless universe created by Halliday. The poverty-stricken Wade Watts fights, through his OASIS avatar, Parzival, alongside millions to win the game, including the beautiful Art3mis, his best friend H, and the sleek, multi-billion-dollar corporation made up of thousands of players, Innovation Online Industries (IOI for short), which wants to bring the OASIS under corporate control. Wade and other dedicated gamers have been hunting obsessively for an elusive Easter egg left hidden in the game's code by its late creator, James Halliday. To find the egg, gamers must find three keys and pass through three gates, where their skills will be tested. The sole winner will receive the entirety of Halliday's trillion-dollar fortune, including his controlling share in the Oasis' parent company.

The task of solving the Halliday puzzles come with much higher stakes, and in order to win, Wade will have to solve the mysteries left behind in the OASIS which, he discovers, have much more to do with the real world than he previously thought. However, what really matters to Halliday — who decided that this moment should be presented by a virtual form of his true self, rather than his avatar — is that Parzival (Wade) understands his regrets about his life. Halliday always felt more comfortable living in video games than he did in the real world, and he always felt more comfortable in the past than in the present. At the end of his life, after losing his chance at love and his partnership with his best friend, Halliday came to understand the importance of reality, which he described as "the only thing that's real."

In this movie, the viewer is given a somewhat grotesque picture of men, women and children of all shapes and sizes living out their days within a digital environment which doesn’t actually exist. It does not only paint a rather pessimistic view of society's growing dependence on technology, but also depicts the fantastical possibilities presented by VR and other futuristic technologies. While this movie might not be the most suitable for kids, it does offer some thought-provoking ideas concerning the virtual epidemic of our modern world. It instilled a lesson that there is a greater prize than anything in the game. The understanding that Wade cannot spend his whole life escaping from what is real

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
The government and media are the two largest establishments in the world, where they can both control or order people by their will. The government that leads the country and the media that provides the information to the country are both institutions that can change people’s taught and perspectives in the society. The government alone cannot lead  the people to the path they wished to because the information that they provided may not reach to all the people in the society. And for the government to accomplish spreading the news, the media is there for it. The media also serves us our watchdogs where it gives us the transparency in our government. And by that, the government and the media has a love-hate relationship because there are times where the media can support the government because they agree on what the government has said or implemented, and there are also times where the media can be against to the government because they might not like or agree to the government’s plans or information that they had provide.
It can’t be helped that the media might change the people’s perspective and thoughts which leads to conflict since each one of us has an opinion to which is right and to which is wrong. There will always be conflict and people who will lead to a group that will help contradict to the laws and plans of the government to the country. The citizens will become divided because they believe that their own opinions and statements are right. Politicians will blame the media for what happen to the society because of how they share the news to the people and the media criticizes politicians for what they are doing. Despite of that, let us not forget the two institutions are both important for us. The governments that plans and leads us to a better society for the people, and the media that help us to be updated and notified on the news and reports that are happening around us, and for giving us the transparency in our government. So let us not choose side to this love-hate relationship of the government and the media. Let’s just be aware and be critical on what is going around the news and around us, and let us all help one another to become a better people in a better country.

Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship
Tumblr media
The media and the government have this what you called Love and Hate relationship. The freedom of the press or media is being held by the government. Why is this happening to the media?  Who is holding the media? What did they do? Is there something about the government that they didn't want the people to know that’s why they are controlling the media? The government controlling the media and press is not new here in the Philippines because it always happened. The first step that President Marcos took when he declared the Martial Law on September 21, 1972, was to take control of all the mass media in the country. Strict censorship was made in all the news and the Department of Public Information (DPI) was using a guideline requiring newspapers, radio, and television to print and broadcast only the accurate information that reflected positively to the government, the authorities, and the military. President Marcos silencing public criticism and control the information that the people had access to. On September 28, 1972, President Marcos issued a letter of instruction no.1 authorizing the military to take over the assets of all major media outlets including ABS-CBN Network, Channel 5, and many more.
It's not surprising and new if the current government is like this or aggressive towards the media. Because sometimes the media is also acting irresponsibly, and maybe the media is just stating the truth about the Government’s dirty little secret. But the media has a right to publish all the real information to the people. The people have all the right to know what’s going on in the country and the government. It may be a negative or positive approach, the media or the people must know. Even in today's government, there is some situation that the government is controlling the media. Also, let’s not forget about the 13 journalists who were killed in work-related attacks under President Duterte’s administration. The lives of the journalist are at risk. According to the Media Freedom Organization Without Borders, the Philippines remains to be the topmost dangerous countries for media in Asia pacific. Sometimes the media are publishing some fake information and this is one of the reasons why the government is controlling the media. Even though all of this is happening in the media now, Filipino netizens are still no.1 in Asia and sixth in the world when it comes to internet freedom.

Media and Government: A love-hate relationship
Tumblr media
The relationship between media and government has always been deep-rooted and interdependent unto each other. With the goal of the government to ensure the safety and balance of their citizens and its people of which they govern, they have always relied heavily upon the media’s mechanism in order to do so. With the help of media, the government is able to have an assurance that their goals would be achieved. Where information is disseminated to help the society’s decision making process on their day to day life, from what to do on certain arising problems, actions to take on huge events and natural disasters, updates on local to international issues, safety and health concerns and political cases. With that, the media assesses on the information given to them, analysing and instigates on a discussion pertaining the issues to ensure that the nation would evolve in a perceptive and positive manner, without being oppressive to the people. With this kind of relationship the nation grows and the society becomes better with the same goals and objectives. However, what happens when this interdependent relationship starts to decays and one side gains all control on the dissemination of information, dominating the whole relationship?
The supposed civil relationship of both media and government is meant to bridge the growth of the nation such as ours. Yet, in the current times it seems as if the government manipulates every detail and information that is given to the public. Corruption is rampant from the shadows, some valuable information is censored, pertaining issues are thrown out to the trash, and the people are kept hidden from the truth. Because of this, the media fails to become a gatekeeper with only the role given for a narrative-approach. Moreover, the information shown to the public shifts to a quantity over quality manner, driving the people to misleading content and the mass continues to grow anxious of the happenings. Making the nation deteriorate and driven away from the goals aiming to develop the country as a whole. A selfish and self-serving government causes all these if they stray away from their true and real objectives and that is to; empower society, innovate projects for the general public, and help create a better and envisioned country. Ultimately, the ones to fix the issues happening currently are the sectors of the government, the press and media, and the people of the nation.

The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual
MELMAR P. OBACH
As we are living in the 21st century, advancements towards our way of living life are rapidly growing wherein lots of different types of information are being discovered and circulated across the globe, whether this information is about new materials or things that are discovered, or news about a certain country or society and situational updates by certain people or individual. With the fact that these kinds of information are circulated and distributed through the technologies that were invented and we currently use as of today like radios, televisions, computers, and cellphones, it is really important to be media and information literate for us to know how we can use these technologies that are already invented to our own advantage towards gathering information, distributing other information and to be able to distinguish false and accurate information to gain knowledge from this information and share it for the benefit of everyone.
For us to be responsible enough towards using media and information, we must become the role models of this generation and contribute to our society or the world by conveying good accurate information. We must first study and do research of our information in order for us to have legitimate and accurate information backed up with facts that won’t waver against false information or false accusations against your information. It is critically important for us to do so in order to prevent misleading the society or benefactors of such information that could cause misunderstanding and chaos towards other people. By knowing how to give accurate information, we are providing the society or the benefactors a proper system where they can gain knowledge of the said information and be aware of the said information for us not to be ignorant and become knowledgeable about such information that was shared throughout everyone.

"The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual"
-Kristia Isadora P. Durango-
Media and information literacy are different subject areas that play a big role in education, not just in education but also in the different aspects of our lives. Media literacy emphasizes an individual’s ability to understand media functions and their ability to evaluate how they are performed and to use them for self-expression. People with high media literacy can lead to increase in quality in media content because these individuals require more realistic information of higher quality. On the other hand, information literacy focuses more on the individual’s ability to emphasize the importance of access of the information and their ability to evaluate this information and to make use of this information in an ethical manner. Individuals that are media and information literate are able to interpret and make informed judgments. These individuals able to skillfully create and produce information that’s reliable and accurate to avoid the spreading of disinformation.
Being a media and information literate individual is very crucial nowadays especially we’re living in the 21st century. The importance of being a media and information literate individual gives us an advantage when it comes to gathering information; because you have the knowledge to criticize information, to know whether it really is true or false or accurate. Same as giving information, you also have an advantage since before sharing information, you evaluate first the information, you verify it whether it’s really accurate before sharing it to the different mediums especially in media. Since information that are posted on different media platforms spread easily, we should always be careful in choosing the information we post and the things we share to prevent disinformation from happening and to not abuse the freedom that we have. Being a media and information literate individual is a big help in preventing these things from happening.
