Uncrowned King drabble

again @nemo-of-house-hamartia is responsible, bless her soul. this drabble would definitely fall under au so here we go,

In some alternate timeline Ardyn is King in his own right, while his people are on patrol they capture who they call a spy. Their brought to Ardyn who talks to them in private, he asks where their from and they dance around the question. Until he has them pinned, it's than that they reveal their from another kingdom.

While most people would execute their prisoner or torture them he does neither. But he does hold them hostage but he gives them freedom while in the castle walls but they cannot leave.

Who's this prisoner, well it's no other than the princess unofficially of Lucis. But she tries to hide this fearing this will provoke an official declaration of war. So instead she gives a fake name or rather a name she use to go by.

While staying with Ardyn she's given her own room, excess to anywhere in the castle well all except one area. She's not to be harassed by anyone but should she escape her privileges would be revoked.

So she uses this time to explore the castle and get to know this tyrant King better. Shes heard many rumors from her father, guards, her brother and many others how hes a cruel man. A trickster that was punished by the gods..but after watching him for a month...she questions what she's been told.

The people that call his "kingdom" home are cursed with what was believed to be incurable deceases. But Ardyn heals them, gives them a place to live all in exchange for loyalty. He entertains the children with a strange type of magic and listens to all.

She can't find a tyrant anywhere in the kingdom, if anything he's a trickster, big kid, childish at times and a schemer. But he seems to have a heart for his people...and Luscinia can't help but feel torn. The man she heard about and the man that she stays with are different people. How? Her father wouldn't lie to her right? And if he's a good man why couldn't her Kingdom leave him alone. No something must be wrong, so Luscinia decides to do some digging or rather snooping around the castle.

But one night she finds out that the rumors are true, he is a monster cursed by the gods.

The man she was falling for is a monster, goop runs from his eyes and down his mouth. Like tears running down a broken mans face, Ardyn reach's for her but she runs out terrified. Instead of running after her he watches...

She runs away and manages to escape the kingdom, later Luscinia is found by Cor and Nov father and daughter team for the win . They bring her back home. She's questioned where she's been and Luscinia makes up a story feeling torn about what's happened. Sometime passes and Noctis goes to talk to his sister because she's been distant. They talk and he manages to get through to her, she wants to confide in him but she worries what he'll say. So she decides to go to a friend and vent a bit, turns out Luscinia might have caught the feels.

Somethings happen and Luscinia manages to make it back to Ardyn, she tries to talk to him to get answers. To maybe help him but instead he just pushes her away and now treats her like a prisoner. In an attempt to keep her away and to save her from himself. Meanwhile her Kingdom is making plans to storm the castle and save the Princess. Noctis watched his sister be taken into the kingdom oops💦

Outside of drama that's happening their are soft moments,

Luscinia playing the piano with Ardyn, the two exploring the library together, exploring outside the kingdom together, like the bakeries, markets and scenic places.

I realise this story sounds like interesting take on beauty and beast somehow, except Luscinia is no damsel. If anything Ardyn is jk unless 👀

@nemo-of-house-hamartia How do they reconcile the fact that Corazan is Eilistraean and Minthara instead was Lolth-sworn?? Would it prove a point of contention between them? Would they ever return to Menzoberranzan, or have they discarded every single connection with the Underdark?

You didn't realize you hit my "unhinged rant" button, so I apologize for the novel this spawned. Thank you for your interest in my silliness, it's really made my day - my week, my month, really!

Anyway, here's my rants. I'm doing my best to make it easy to read (Tech Writer powers activate!) but I'm cobbling this together over a lunch break, so I apologize if it's messy. I've tried to highlight things that give you the TL;DR.

Lolth-Sworn:

Just for a little background: Coranzan grew up a Lolthite in Eastmyr, Menzoberranzan himself. He wasn't a die-hard or anything but that's just "how things were" for him.

He rejected her after his and Z'ress' Blooding and he had something of an epiphany about it. I won't go into it here but Coran still carries some Lolthite views, such as ambition being an admirable quality among other things. So they're not too different in some values - except that they disagree on HOW one achieves their ambitions.

But boiling it down, Coranzan and Minthara have a shared goal on Lolth: that Lolth's rule in the Underdark is a blight on Drow and if they can hamper her ability to rule, they should try and do as much damage as possible.

Lolthite Beliefs:

Through the game I see Minthara giving way on a LOT of Lolth-typical concepts except maybe in her view of power, ambition, and some governance.

She feels the way her mother raised her was terrible and a bad example - which was merely the way most drow were raised. She's so horrified by her mother's way, it chills her when she sees what this does to people like her and Orin - being "lost to madness and blood".

She's so enraged by Lolth's betrayal despite the fact that she was likely raised to EXPECT betrayal from Lolth (I am reading Daughter of the Drow and was fascinated to read this there).

She rejects the Baenre name - that's a huge part of her identity. This woman is rebuilding herself from the ground up, picking up each piece and analyzing it to see if it is a value she still has and discarding it if not.

Besides the fact that she's rejected a lot of Lolthite beliefs, I think there's a pattern to it: Minthara seems to feel that the drive for ambition and power is good but the societal norms that came from Lolth should be mostly rejected. So, generally speaking, Coran is aligned with her on this.

Eilistraean Beliefs:

The biggest point of contention for them is Coranzan's belief in Eilistraee. Minthara is pretty anti-worship-of-anything after rejecting Lolth. She calls Coran "my little marionette" for worshiping Eilistraee.

However, purely by values, Eilistraee is not the worst goddess and I think she and Minthara line up in some ways - mainly in rejecting and dismantling Lolth's hold on Drow and that Drow should be self-sufficient. Eilisitraee does not teach drow to become dependent on her and do her bidding, she bids them to be free and to consider helping other drow be free (only if you choose to join the Clergy). However, I still think Minthara would feel Eilistraee expects you to sacrifice too much of yourself to achieve those goals and that it shouldn't just be done for the sake of it.

So, they disagree on this aspect, but Coran is no preacher, so it's not a constant fight. He's not trying to convert her - or anyone for that matter - and the only Eilistrean thing he does is support her life of exile on the surface. When she first joins the camp, he gives her the attention he would any drow who has recently arrived on the surface, as is his Eilistraean mission. But he doesn't bark about Eilistraee, he just acts as she'd like him to: ensure drow succeed on the surface.

Coranzan worships separately: he privately performs the evensong for personal reflection every day (if possible) and he and his sister Z'ress regularly dance in the moonlight and make it no business of the rest of the camp - but they don't hide it either.

He understands Minthara doesn't agree with it and finds it all very silly - and their disagreement deepens when she comes to understand how Coran was treated in the Church of Eilistraee (gender issues are still a thing there and it took him 150 years to become a Cleric and Sword Dancer of Eilistraee).

She would surely believe the Church of Eilistraee is holding him back. Through the story, he clearly demonstrates strength of character and leadership - a rare and now welcome thing to find in a Drow man - but the Church of Eilistraee holds on to gender-based beliefs that are weirdly in common with Lolthites and that suppressed his ambitions.

In time (a little post-BG3), due to convincing arguments from Minthara and Z'ress, Coranzan will relent to their perspectives. Although he does not reject Eilistraee entirely, he will leave the Church of Eilistraee, and he changes the way he believes - he proactively pursues taking down Lolth's prized servants rather than the passive/reactive response that seems to be pretty common with Eilistraeans.

Menzoberranzan:

I've always felt that returning to Menzoberranzan openly as an apostate is insanity. If Lolth herself doesn't fuck you up, her people will.

Nonetheless, I have stories that I'm still figuring out where Coranzan does covertly return to Menzoberranzan post-BG3 without Minthara for months at a time. They are agonizing stretches of time and he loathes being in that hateful place without her or Z'ress. But it is to gather intelligence and find sympathetic rebels - as Eilistraean Secret Moondancers would do - to help their cause and build their new House. Eventually, he'll stop going and send others in his place.

Let me back up and give context:

First off, Coranzan lived most of his adult life around Waterdeep or the Promenade of the Dark Maiden (which is in the Undermountain below Waterdeep).

So in the Epilogue, when Minthara talks about founding a new House in "your name", he is hesitant but agrees - his family hasn't had a House in a generation or so now (which is why he and Z'ress have only first names). So, he leaves the Church of Eilistraee and decides that founding a House with Minthara is his future. He believes he can achieve far greater things with her than with the Church.

His thought is to return to the Undermountain near the Promande. That is to avoid getting too close to Lolth's domain so they have a chance at surviving. So they found (with a lot of help) a place to get started by clearing and rebuilding a section of the many ruined cities of the Undermountain (which is considered part of the Underdark).

The rebels that "swarm" to Minthara's and his' cause against the Spider Queen are the collective that shape the new House.

From there, they regularly make attempts to sabotage or hinder Lolth, House Baenre, etc. with their newly made forces. Being a smaller force, they favor guerilla tactics rather than going straight to warring with the Lion's Den that is Menzoberranzan.

So, technically they live in the Underdark post-game but there's a fair bit that stands between them and Menzoberranzan.

bloody hell, with this all Shay/Dora thing that I have going on, I can finally introduce Thea properly.

She came so late into the game (as a concept, she existed since 2020 - Thea and Dora were always going to be twins- but as a character, I basically developed late 2022, early 2023?) that I NEVER thought about the possibility of making her Dottie's literal wingman and bff (again, in Syndicate Dorothea was an only child).

SWEET, SWEET DELICIOUS POSSIBILITIES THAT HAVE JUST OPENED UP IN FRONT OF MY EYES.

AM DELIGHTED.

(am basically moving all the Starrick family back into 1700s for the Rogue arc lololol).

This is my silly little guy version of Adimantos (I drew him a couple days ago here), one of my Spartan OC's that I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Three fun facts about him:

His pater (Eukleidas) was a wrestling champion, and though he tried as a young man to measure up to that legacy, he absolutely sucks at this sport.

In the earliest version of his character, he was Brasidas' mothake (foster brother). I am still trying to write this version in my og fic, Hollow Lakedaimon.

If he was transported to the 21st century, I think he'd be a teacher (probably sport teacher); and he'd get into theatre, music - probably rock mostly, I think - and he'd be one of those people who like to hang out at coffee shops.

Late edit: I forgot the music part! That would be Counting Spooks by Editors.

I could see Luscinia kidnapping Ardyn's jacket and hat strutting around like a goddess, ardyn coming around the corner and she just keeps going.

I'm not sure how your working their dynamic but I feel like she brings laughter and warmth this poor smirky man needs. He's still him it's just from time to time he'll lower his guard to show he still is a man just a hurting one.

He's wanted to feel the warmth of another, to not be used and abused but to be loved if even for a moment. So seeing her in his things gives him an odd since of belonging which he hides with a smirk and a comment.

Ardyn: " You look very luxurious kitten but dare I say those items are better equipped to on me."

Luscinia: Didn't your parents tell you not to lie it looks better on me and if you want it back you'll have to take it.

Queue her running off trying to win this little game. Ardyn can't help but savor this moment before he bites his lip and goes after her. Now I'd like to believe he likes the thrill of the hunt so he's patient. She'll go somewhere and hide, he'll wait for her to lower her guard than nab her.

Ardyn: tsk tsk not so feral are we, in the face of danger you tuck into my humble embrace begging for mercy

Luscinia: really?

Ardyn: oh come on your not gonna play along dearest.

The two maybe get caught in playful banter but end on a soft note. I could see noctis demanding to have his sister back. Ardyn gives her up but moreso because she's too good to be true, to give into these feelings would be to hurt again. And he's not ready for that...

No matter how much he cherishes her company, tea and sweets, discreet shopping, maybe reading, playful banter and him just enjoying her warmth. The man's just afraid of loosing more..

If their relationship we're to be lean toward romantic playful

He definitely hasn't measured both of their hands side by side to see how tiny hers is to his. Or carefully intertwine their fingers or bring her fingers up to his lips to tease her nope nope never.

Shell hug him and he gently wraps his arms around her, afraid he'll shatter this moment. What if she's not real? What if he's finally lost it, hallucinating because he's so alone on the inside.

I could see him catching her napping in her coat and smiling at her, brushes his fingers along her cheek. Kneeling down to trace her lips with his finger before bringing that same finger to his lips. Of course he's gone before she awakens because he's not one to get caught.

Did I mention he loves to go shopping with her, being the gentleman he is he pays. Stole emperor's card

He loves seeing her all dressed up like the goddess she is, he wishes things we're different. Wishes he we're someone else so he could sweep her off her feet before running off with her like the tricker he is.

At night he curses the gods for what he's become but he also questions why they allowed their encounter. He questions if she's real or if he's truly dead one must be right. She's far to good for him he doesn't deserve happiness or love.. he's..cursed and the flight of this world. Right?
