Social Media clean-up ...
Tumblr media
So if you follow me on social media, especially Instagram, you probably know that I have a lot of accounts. A lot. Some of personal accounts, most are accounts I manage for other people or businesses.
In the past, I kind of treated my accounts as yearbook albums instead of an account. While also having a fitness account with a couple special interest accounts for my running. That included one with a summary of all my 180 races and one for my race medals. It was an easy way for me to compartmentalize my interests and running. But, after shifting my goals a bit this year, I decided to clean up my accounts while getting rid of some accounts as well.
Gone is my race medal account — that was a fun project, but I have so many race medals to document that it was a task that took long. The idea isn’t completely dead, but the account is gone. I also archived my fitness account @josherwalla.fit and @joshruns180 for a couple of reasons.
The fitness account really wasn’t much of a fitness account, it turned into somewhat of a secondary personal account. Something that kind of happened sometime around my trip to Europe in 2017. There was no point to it and I just wanted to start over on a new account without losing the content. So it’s archived.
I also archived my @joshruns180 account which were all summaries of all my 180 races over 13.1 miles. I was continuing to all my race summaries over 13.1 miles on it, but it was just too much. I want to leave it as is, as a memory of sorts of my 180 race journey. The account is essentially a memorial of sorts.
I am not touching my personal account @josherwalla — that is staying the same. But, I am trying to keep that account focused on more of my personal life. I will keep MOST of my fitness and health content off that account. It’ll still have some running and food content on there, but I have two new accounts that will be fully focused on those two areas.
What was essentially my old @josherwalla.fit account, my new fitness account is called @runfitketo. I thought about keeping the same name, but being the creative mind I am — I went with something new. The focus on this account will be solely fitness, running and keto lifestyle and that’s evident with the account name. Pretty much what I wanted to do with my old account, but didn’t.
My newest account — and something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time is a food account. I love food. I love cooking. I love baking. It’s something that relaxes and inspires me. I’ve shared some of my food and cooking posts on my personal and fitness accounts in the past, but I want to dedicate on account to it.
The account is called @foodwithjosher — pretty straight forward name, I know. And, I’m basically planning on sharing some of my own recipes, foods I try to cook and what I eat around town. I’m not a better cook than baker — but — I wouldn’t consider myself that good. However, I’m passionate about cooking, I understand most basic techniques and my palate is something I try to develop as much as I can.
Even though I am a keto disciple, I don’t cook/bake solely keto foods. I just love experimenting in the kitchen even if I don’t eat what I’m making. But, luckily, my favorite cuisine is Greek — which is very keto friendly. But, I’m looking to cook more international flavors and cuisine tied into my family genealogy — especially Norwegian, British and Jewish inspired foods.
This past weekend I tapped into my British roots and made a banoffee pie — which I documented and shared on the new food account. Give it a look and a follow if that’s something that interests you. I have a few fun things coming up in the next couple of months regarding my cooking and food — so stay tuned.
Anyways, if you’re reading this — thank you. It means that what I write is actually be read. I hope you enjoy my little adventures and side hobbies. I have a lot of fun discovering the world around me whether it’s by my feet or palate.

Welcome to @runfitketo I’m @josherwalla — I’ve had past fitness IG accounts where I’ve chronicled my health — mainly @jsh81.18 — but, the vision I had for it kind of got away from me and it just turned into a secondary personal IG account. So I wanted to start off fresh with a clean slate and keep this new account focused on running, fitness and keto journeys. I plan on sharing posts not just about my workouts, races and diet, but how it relates to my mental health as well. I’ll share posts of insights about me, my health and all of the ups and downs that come with trying to balance yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It should be a fun journey. Feel free to follow my other activate accounts @josherwalla (personal) and @foodwithjosher (my cooking and love for food). You can also find me on FB at FB.com/josherwalla! Welcome to @foodwithjosher — yes, this is a new account, but I’m trying to consolidate my accounts into my interests. I used to post a lot about my food on my old fitness account @jsh81.18 — but, I’m leaving that dormant — because it really just ended up being a second personal IG account, and starting @runfitketo (new personal fitness account) and this account @foodwithjosher (my cooking and food adventures), my personal account @josherwalla is not changing. I’ll be sharing my food adventures here. I love to cook and bake — or at least try. I’m a better cook than baker that’s for sure. It’s soothing for me, it’s therapy, even if I don’t eat the food. I follow a ketogenic lifestyle — which is a low carb, high fat diet. I do this not just to lose weight, but I do it to help counter the effects of my Hashimoto’s Disease and mental health. I love the diet. Everything here isn’t keto and most of the food here I cook isn’t keto. I love cooking for family and friends, I love cooking traditional family foods and a number of ethnic foods. I’ll post more about those later. I also love discovering food around town. These foods are obviously keto friendly because I’m actually eating them. So expect a number of posts regarding keto found around Salt Lake City, the Wasatch Front and Utah. It should be fun. I’m sure I’ll snap a bunch of pictures of my friend’s non-keto dishes as well. There’s a lot of great food out there for any diet. I’m not going to talk much about my keto experience here, if you’re looking for that I’ll be addressing it more on my fitness account @runfitketo. Feel free to connect there. Just remember, I’m not the best of cooks, but I don’t feel like I need to be — I’m just passionate about good food, I’m willing to try something new both on a plate and in the kitchen and I want to share it. —————————————————————— #foodwithjosher #keto #wellness #mentalhealth #anxiety #ketodiet #ketoweightloss #ketolifestyle #ketosis #health #food #foodporn #foodie #foodgasm #ketofood #saltlakecity #utah #utahfood #slcfoodie #cooking #baking #cookingismypassion #bakingfun #ketofoodie #foodstagram —————————————————————— Follow me @foodwithjosher for more food posts

RACE #180: Bountiful Handcart Days Half Marathon; July 21, 2018 (3:49:54) I can’t begin to describe what was going on in my head throughout the day, especially those last few yards. I was trying to process everything going on — while just being in the moment. Sure, this is an end to a goal, but there is so much more to look towards going forward. This race felt like a graduation day moe than a moment of finality or end. I’m moving forward to better things and I can’t be anymore excited! But, throughout the day I’ve just felt an immense amount of gratitude for not just a body that held up for seven years to do this, but for the friendships and experiences I’ve gained in the time has been the true blessing in this all. I felt spoiled and loved by so many throughout the day especially from Amanda, Lizzi, Jill and Trinity. Thank you doesn’t cut it. Oh yeah, the race itself — it was hot. It was miserable. But, it was fun. I had a running posse with me all 13.1 miles. That alone made it my favorite race yet! #race180 #handcartdayshalf #running @southdavisraces @trailsandpavement @joshruns180

RACE #177: Drop13 Big Cottonwood Half Marathon, June 9, 2018 (3:39:28) Words can’t even begin to properly convey my thoughts and feelings of today. I feel a deep sense of gratitude to not only be a runner, but to also be a member of this running community. Over the past seven years since I started this journey I’ve been able to have some amazing experiences. Today probably takes the cake. I might sound like a broken record telling this story, but it’s meant to be shared. I met Lizz a year (and eight days) ago at a luncheon I was speaking at for my alma mater (GO T-BIRDS!). She came to meet me even though she wasn’t an alum of SUU. Just like me, Lizz has anxiety, and for her to do something so out of the ordinary like that was completely out of her comfort zone. But, by a divine guiding hand, she made it to the luncheon and we met. Our paths were meant to cross. A year ago a half marathon — let alone a 5K — was nearly out of realm of possibility. Yet, here we are a year later and Lizz’s “impossible” is now reality. Not only is she now a half marathoner, but she’s lost over 100lbs., ran over 20+ 5Ks and 10Ks and changed herself inside and outside. I couldn’t be any prouder. This race today was just perfect. A big thank you to Joseph Coles for sleepless nights of prep for this race, for Amanda Condie Bjarnson who joined us for some of the difficult miles and kept us sufficiently distracted and the many, many, many of you who stopped to wish Lizz well on her journey. I started my journey by running alone and if I can keep that from happening to others … I will. That was part of the reason I surprised Lizz at the starting line. Plus, I told her I felt partially responsible for getting her into this mess by introducing her to the running world. Again congratulations on this accomplishment Lizz, I have no doubt this journey of yours is inspiring someone out there to change their impossible into reality. Because nothing is impossible and today was proof of that. #race177 #drop13halfmarathon #running @josherwalla @ketowalla @joshruns180

HALF #152: Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon; September 8, 2018 (2:56:26) I went into the race with many aspirations for a sub-2:40 finish. But, alas, that wasn’t the case. The first 8 miles were pretty magical and I was on pace for such a finish, but after fighting a chest cold the week prior I ended up throwing up after a nice little cough attack. That upset my stomach just enough to make me nausea to the point where I threw up three more times — including right in front of the finish line in a feeble attempt to get to the medic tent. I spent nearly an hour plus in the medic tent hooked up to an IV and sipping water next to Jill who had some fun cramping going on (she ended up PRing!). It wasn’t the most ideal ending, but I’m okay with it considering my time, my fitness and my experience with Jill and other friends. I’ll be back at it next year. I’m always back. I love this race. #half152 #race185 #runrevel #revelbigcottonwood #running @josherwalla.fit @josherwalla @josherwalla.run

RACE #178: Oquirrh Mountain Half Marathon; June 16, 2018 (2:50:27.2) An unexpected success! I got my sub-three! Janet and I came across at about 2:50.27 even! I couldn’t be happier with the time. The effort was there and it helped that Janet and I talked each other’s ears off. So much better than plugging my headphones in to distract myself. It’s hard to believe I’m two races away from my goal. It feels somewhat surreal. I’ve had my ups and downs, but I feel extremely blessed that my body has held up over the years. ONE. MORE. MONTH. TO. MY. GOAL. #drop13halfmarathon race178 #oquirrhmountainhalf @joshruns180

HALF #150: Run Elevated Half Marathon; August 18, 2018 (2:46:54) Crazy to think this was my 150th half marathon! It really doesn’t feel like I’ve been running that long, but seven years IS along time. I couldn’t have been happier with this race. I came into it worried about cutoffs and my pace. And, I came away not just meeting those goals but having a blast with my friend @amandabjarnson who ran the whole 13.1 with me. Besides coming away with those experiences I’m coming away with a big ‘ol blister on my left foot and one less toe nail. If I didn’t know the cause I would have guessed I contracted the leprosy. Very happy with my 2:46:54 time and I’m looking forward to another great race next week as I tackle the Nebo Half! I feel like I’m getting my mojo back baby! #runelevatedhalf #half150 #race183 #running @josherwalla @josherwalla.fit @josherwalla.run @josherwalla.bling

Top Five Race Medals of 2018
1) Handcart Days Half Marathon
Tumblr media
As much as I love the Runtastic Events Trilogy Medal, this race medal is BY FAR my favorite medal of 2018. While, I do like the design, the meaning behind this race and the significance behind my journey means so, so much more. This race was a celebration of all of that with so many friends, it’s a moment I will forever remember.
2) Runtastic Events Trilogy Medal
Tumblr media
The past couple of Trilogy Medals have been some of my favorite medals throughout my running journey. Not only are they HUGE and HEAVY, but I love that there is meaning behind each one with great design detail. For those not familiar with the Runtastic Trilogy medal, you get this medal for running at least three of their races over 13.1 miles. Totally worth the challenge!
3) Drop13 Big Cottonwood Half Marathon
Tumblr media
Not only is this medal my favorite from the times I’ve done this race, but the story and experience means a lot to me. I surprised my friend Lizz at the start line since this was her first half marathon — and I ran the whole 13.1 miles alongside her. To make a long story short, I met Lizz a year prior and helped introduced her to the running world. A world where she’s caught fire! This was a great experience for not just her, but me as well — just being there to witness the moment.
4) Timp Half
Tumblr media
I’m a Disneynerd. Always have, always will be. And, this has to be one of my favorite race medals just for the sheer fact that it reminds me of a Mary Blair piece of artwork. Mary Blair did a lot of design for Disneyland and the Walt Disney Company. If you don’t know who she is, look her work up and you’ll agree with my assessment on this medal.
5) Elephant Rock Trail Run
Tumblr media
Last year this race’s medal as a rock. A very cool one. This year the race medal was just as cool with some awesome wood and rock work. I’m excited to see what the race comes up with in 2019! I’m sure it won’t disappoint!

RACE RECAP: The Haunted Half: Provo
I am not going to lie, it’s hard to believe that my last half marathon was over a month ago. Six weeks ago if we’re being exact. My last half marathon was the Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon — which feels like a long, long, long (GASP) long, long time ago.
Sure, I did the Ragnar Sunset Relay earlier this month, but that was only 6.5 miles (psst … only). That was brutal. And, part of the reason why I didn’t have a race until now. I awkwardly rolled my ankle — the one that’s hated me since last April — on a rock during the race. It was nothing major, but it’s been sore for the past couple of weeks so I’ve kept my mileage low as a precaution.
You know “playing it safe” — or whatever the kids call it these days.
So, I decided to defer last weekend’s The Haunted Half in Salt Lake and just focus on this race. Which I did not really race — I swept it. I probably would have deferred this race as well, but pacing the 3:15 final pacer spot was something I felt comfortable with even on a slightly questionable ankle. Plus, I wanted to earn my Trilogy Medal from Runtastic Events — which I got for finishing this race.
So, here I am.

Since this is a Halloween race I also decided to dress up. In the past I’ve dressed up as a banana, sweeper and even myself (meaning I was too lazy to come up with anything creative), but this year I wanted to put some more effort into my costume. And, luckily inspiration struck me months ago and not the night before the race.
I found a foot costume on Amazon and knew right away that I wanted to go as my foot. Since this was the foot that has given grief the past 18 months. Whether it was the chronic sprained ankle, rotating toenails or my BIG black toenail that I finally lost last month — it needed to be memorialized … in a costume form.
After I ordered the costume I decided to color some of the toenails black, then I added some “blood” on some of them along with a paper stock toenail I colored black and duct taped to the big toenail so it was just hanging there. Once I climbed into the costume I wrapped myself in an ace bandage for ankle support.
It was horrific perfection.

I entered the costume contest before the race and ended up winning the men’s costume contest! (Shout out to Heather who won the women’s contest with her Rainbow Brite costume!) There were a lot of awesome costumes, but I guess I gained the edge because all the runners could relate to my foot — and it helped rile up the crowd when I ripped off my toenail and threw it into the crowd.
I felt like somewhat of a celebrity when I had a few strangers come up and get with me. Not only that, but I caught a few taking selfies aiming for me in the background. That made me laugh. It was a fun environment — the starting line of every Haunted Half is fun — and this year’s race was no exception.
At 8:30am the clock started and the mass of runners made their way under the inflatable orange pumpkin arch — probably my favorite starting arch for any of the local races. Since I was sweeping with Cevan Skinner we stayed back until the majority of the runners crossed before us. Before we knew it, we were off as well.

I love running in Provo Canyon, especially along the South Fork Road toward Vivian Park before we turn onto the River Trail. It’s one reason why I love running the Provo City Half along with this race — it’s just pretty in spring or fall. Plus, you get some great views of Mt. Timp along the descent.
I’ve been sweeping at least one of The Haunted Half races since 2014 and I love doing so because I always help myself to the discarded gloves and whatever else the faster runners leave behind. I’ve scored some pretty decent jackets and coats along with numberless amount of gloves. I like to joke that it’s like Trick-or-Treating for runners.
This year was no different.
I picked up a nice fluffy jacket at mile three, a tutu that I added to my costume at mile four and grabbed over 50 pairs of running gloves (52 actually — I counted this year). I use the gloves throughout the year at other races where I’ll discard them guilt free (because I have another 50 billion back at home). So, if you ever need more gloves just come sweep one of The Haunted Half races — you’ll get hooked up.

Since I was sweeping alongside Cevan I knew it was going to be a guaranteed fun time — which it was. Not only constant laughing between us two, but a few of the runners that we were pacing along the course. We were keeping around a 3:15-3:30 pace for most of the race, which we knew might slow down some depending on what runners we found in the last couple of miles.
Around Mile 11-12 Cevan ran ahead of me to stay on pace while I stayed behind and ran with a runner that was having sciatic nerve issues. I staid with her until the last 0.1 when her sister and friend (who ran ahead with Cevan) came back to run in with her. I finished somewhere around 3:40ish — not bad considering the last couple of miles were a nice slow jaunt. But, sweeping isn’t always about time.
Once I finished I got my race medal from Lizz before heading over to the info booth to grab my Trilogy Medal — AND — my first place medal for winning the costume contest. I then plopped myself down to unload my race gloves that I stored in the big toe of my costume, got myself a chiropractic adjustment and downed a couple of waters.
I was pooped.

But, I absolutely had a blast — from the costume contest, to mingling with friends, meeting new friends and pacing with Cevan. My race season pretty much has ended. I have a couple of 5Ks, a Thanksgiving 10K and the Bakers Dozen Half Marathon left on the schedule. But, most of my training won’t be focused on speed and will be more cross training based before I jump start the mileage training again in January.
I am looking forward to the needed rest for my ankle, because I have a couple ambitious goals for 2019. Not only do I want to get faster, but I want to get another marathon and 50 miler under my built next year so I can refocus my 100 miler efforts for 2020. But, this is all a post for another day.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN ALL Y’ALL!

RACE RECAP: Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon
I love this race. Absolutely love it. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise. I kinda talk about it year round. Between this, Nebo and Run Elevated this pretty much is the heart of my race schedule each year. These are my three “A” races. It doesn’t hurt that I absolutely love each canyon as well.
Going into the Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon I was feeling pretty good. Over the previous month I hit my two fastest half marathons over the past 18 months. I felt confident that I could hit a year best time at Revel, especially a sub-2:40 time goal. Especially since I knew the course so well.
And, as much as I would love to say that I hit that benchmark — I didn’t. And, there were a number of factors for that. For one, going into the race I was simply sick. I had a chest cold that got the best of me that week. It was weird because it was only focused within my chest, otherwise I felt fine. So I still felt that I’d be okay.
HA.

I probably shouldn’t have gone into the race with such expectations, but I knew I had it within me. Plus, Jill was going to be running it with me and I always run better when I run with others. I wanted it, bad.
The day before the race I felt pretty good. My legs felt fresh and I wasn’t coughing as much as I was earlier in the week. The discomfort in my lungs were there, but I wasn’t too worried. I was too worried about my pace once I got to mile 10 and outside of the canyon. I knew miles 10-12 were going to be on me — there’s a deceiving gradual uphill that’ll kill ya.
The night before a bunch of us from the Trails & Pavement group met up for a pre-race dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. It’s always fun to socialize out of a running atmosphere. It’s also a great reminder that we all wear things other than running clothes. It was just a fun evening of a lot of laughs and fun times — it helped me get even more excited for the race the following day.

Race morning was pretty typical. I got my drop bag of stuff ready — which was pretty much my race fuel, hoodie and breakfast. I didn’t eat anything out of the usual from the past few months. My typical race morning meal consists of one or two chicken bacon sausage links, some brie cheese and a handful of pecans — a great ration of fat, protein and carbs. It’s not too heavy on the stomach, but it’s sustainable enough to give me enough energy fro the run.
After commuting to bus pick up I walked over to the Maverik to grab a Smart Water as well while waiting to meet up with Jill and Mark to take the bus up the canyon with them. I started munching on my breakfast during the ride up and while waiting up in the canyon for the race to start. It was a good morning and I was really feeling good.
Which was a total flip from the year before when I (stupidly) ate a salad right before the race — which ended up all over a Honey Bucket when I try to slip into one after the gun went off. I have a very low tolerant gag reflex. Something that you’ll want to keep in mind for later in my race story.

The race started at 6:45am and Jill and my goal was to stick together as much as we could and go for that sub-2:40 — and for Jill this would be a PR attempt. We wanted to help pace each other along. We inched our way across the starter’s mat about 12 minutes after the gun sounded and soon the shuffle turned into a jog, run and then sprint.
But, that sprint didn’t last long as we tried to consciously calm our excitement and nerves. Plus, starting a goal race like this TOO fast is one of the biggest cardinal sins of running. So we slowed down and let the crowd pace us for a bit.
The first few miles were not only fast, but absolutely gorgeous. The sun was rising over the mountains and gave the canyon a feel that not only autumn was almost here, but like you were almost running in a Bob Ross painting. There were literally happy little trees everywhere.

Around mile 4-5 I started feeling fatigue inch into my legs and lungs. I wasn’t too surprised by that because I wasn’t running intervals — I was just keeping up with Jill. But, at the Mile 5 aid station we ran into Amanda, Mike and Brandy — who were running intervals. I told Jill to go ahead so I could stay back with them. I wanted Jill to get her PR.
Intervals were a welcome change of pace. They allowed my legs a small reprieve from the steep decent and having trained mostly in intervals (and fartleks) it was something my body was used to and happy about doing at that point of the race. And, quite honestly, I probably should have been doing since I crossed the starting mat.
But, that’s a story for another day.
I had a blast running with the Bjarnsons and Brandy. It’s always fun running with those three. We posed for a couple of pictures. Mainly at the S curve with my Hokas and then when we were running down ‘the fastest mile’ like Phoebe Bufay. Like I said, we had a blast!

It was right after ‘the fastest mile’ when we ran past the electrical plant that my body just started wanting — well — more like needing to slow down. I let the Bjarnsons and Brandy go ahead. At this point I just kind of conceded my race because my chest cold cough decided to make an appearance.
By Mile 8 I started cough a bit uncontrollably and without much effort — I threw up. Usually after I throw up … I’m fine, if not better. But, I wasn’t. My stomach soon got the message that it needed to get rid of EVERYTHING in my stomach. That included my breakfast and dinner from the previous night.
Not fun.
I got to the Mile 10 aid station and knew I needed rid more of my stomach contents. Not wanting to barf in front of volunteers and runners I grabbed a trash can and went behind the row of Honey Buckets to spew. It was less graceful than my upheaval at Mile 8, but definitely not the worst at the end of the day.

I carried on and just focused on the last three miles in front of me. By this time I knew I was well past my sub-2:40 time and more than likely past a sub-2:50 time. I still wanted a sub-3 time, but at the same time — I just didn’t want to die. Not only wasn’t my stomach stable, but being out of the canyon exposed me to the sun. There were no happy little trees to give me shade.
The weather was doing me dirty. Those last three miles went from a hot clear sky to overcast in what seemed like every half mile. It was horrible. As soon as I got used to the shade of the clouds BAM there was the sun. This just seemed to make things worse for me.
At Mile 12, I was done. I knew I had nothing left in me and I tried to walk. But, I couldn’t. The simple act of walking made me cramp — yet — running didn’t?! It was a cruel punishment, because I really didn’t want to run. And, while I was in that moment lamentation — I threw up again.

  A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Sep 8, 2018 at 3:57pm PDT
At this point that last mile seemed like an eternity. My focus now was to simply not pass out. I was worried about that, because I could feel that my body was dehydrated. I couldn’t stomach hardly any water as evidenced by my last aid station stop. I just wanted to stay up on my feet, finish the race and then die.
I kept shuffling along and by complete surprise from me — I was passing people. It really didn’t have much to do with my athletic ability or speed. It was probably a combination of other runner’s struggles and the fact that if I stopped to walk I would have cramped.
I got to the finish line and as my friend Nick gave me my finisher’s medal I immediately felt a familiar feeling — the brewing of another stomach eruption. I desperately looked for a trash can. Nick pointed me toward the medical tent. But, within two steps toward the tent everything came out all over.
All over.

A post shared by JosherDoes Keto (@josherwalla.fit) on Sep 9, 2018 at 10:39am PDT
I made this desperate attempt to catch the vomit with two of my cupped hands. That was a joke. After I deposited my load a medical volunteer handed me a vomit bag and pointed me toward the tent and a cot.
To my surprise Jill was laying next to me with taped up calves sipping on water. After throwing up again — this time in my vomit bag — I asked Jill how her race went. Obviously, she got in before me, but I wanted to know if she got a new PR. Which she did! She came in at 2:34 — an eight minute PR!
While reveling in that accomplishment for her the nurses were assessing my situation. They gave me an anti-nausea pill — which helped. But, I still couldn’t really stomach water — which I needed. Knowing this I asked for an IV.
  View this post on Instagram
  A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Sep 8, 2018 at 4:18pm PDT
An IV is usually a last resort, but I could feel my body’s need for hydration — fast. And, I’ve had IVs after a couple other races in the past. They can really turn the tide after a hot depleted race. And, this IV did the trick.
After hanging out in the med tent with the IV and sipping water afterwards for about an hour I hobbled over to the Run4fun tent to continue my post-race rehab. Once I got my legs back underneath me I made the long — yet short — walk back to my car for the ride home.
I was exhausted, but much better than when I crossed that finish line. I just needed a nap. And, a few more hours before thinking about food. But, more than that a nap. So, when I got home and collapsed for a couple hours. It was perfection.

  A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Sep 8, 2018 at 4:30pm PDT
In retrospect, I know what went wrong. I know what I need to do to avoid this kind of outcome again. I need to stick with intervals — or at the very least race the way I train. I got overeager with my goals and wanting to stick with Jill. I needed to run my race and let Jill run her race.
I also should have put into account that I was sick that previous week when making race plans. That really was just dumb. I tried to mentally avoid that key fact of reality. Should I have not raced at all — no, of course not. I am not going to miss this race. I am a Legacy Runner and I take pride in that. But, I should have slowed down and been more conservative.
But, the good that came out of all of this I guess is that I finished under three hours (2:56:46) — and it really could have been much, much worse. There were a number of runners that didn’t make it to the finish line and that just wasn’t going to happen to me.
And, it didn’t.

It was hard to get outside tonight. A few steps outside and I wanted to go back inside. I fought the anxiety hard by just trying to outrun it. It took me a couple blocks to calm down and lose the desire to just go back home. Once I got out to the main road I just focused on each step and moved forward. Living with anxiety can be hard at times and beyond difficult more often than we’d like. But, one thing I always try to keep in mind is that I control the narrative. When the narrative seems to not be going my way, I have complete power to shift it in my favor. That mentality has helped me understand my anxiety, respect my anxiety and — for the most part — control my anxiety. There’s no reason to be ashamed of mental health. There’s no reason to hide it. And, especially, there’s no reason to let it control your life. #5khero #runformentalhealth @5khero @wasatch.run @trailsandpavement
