Hei Xiazi/Xie Yuchen (DMBJ)

After Xie Yuchen disappears while on an expedition, Hei Xiazi is led to another abandoned ruin just like so many before. There the only trace left of Xie Yuchen's team, is a bloody jacket spelling out a single word:

Death.

Still going in, he is ready to follow in the steps of those before, determined to leave these ruins with one man more than entered.

Though whether Xie Yuchen has reached death or a fate worse than that, Hei Xiazi is about to find out.

This was so great. A fantastic and interesting tomb, mystery, the two idiots each trying to sacrifice themselves to save the other. Excellent stuff.

This is an absolutely unique and wonderfully written fic. So creative and yet so perfectly in character

“Xiaoge!” Pangzi hears him say, audibly pleased. “You’re back! Where did you—Xiaoge! You’re soaking wet! What happened? And—oh my god, are you bleeding?”

In an Alternative Timeline, Pangzi and Wu Xie didn't meet anyone else on their adventures and they retired early and moved to Rain Village, setting up a bed and breakfast and retreat, and quickly became known in the tomb-robbing world as a place to go if you needed to recover or rest.

After a debilitating accident, that was exactly what Liu Sang needed.

This was so sweet and sad and soft and lovely

All Pangzi wanted to do was sell some information to a broker for a nice sum of money. Or it was what Wu Xie wanted and Pangzi was doing it for him, as usual. He even agreed to go all the way to Siberia for the exchange. It was cold and remote and of course the deal went to shit the moment he arrived, landing him in a tiny cell and beaten black and blue. He wasn't worried. He knew rescue was coming.

When it arrived, it definitely wasn't what he expected.

I can't believe I hadn't read this before. One of my favourite series, featuring two of my favourite characters? Obviously I loved it.

Hmm. I don't think I've done either, to be honest. They're both valid forms, I usually just prefer to mix and match so the actions punctuate the dialogue and the dialogue cuts through long exposition.

I think if I had to pick, I'd give All Dialogue a go - see how the character voices and phrasing could draw the scene for the reader.

Re: Podfics

Character voices can be really, really fun, but they're also an order of magnitude trickier to do well than straight narration. You're trying to get vocal registers that match each character, are distinct from each other, aren't potentially grating over long listening (like a squeaky voice or something), and have room to bring in emotional nuance.

Really super fun when I can pull it off, but tricky, so I tend to avoid fics that have a massive multiplayer cast, unless they're very, very short.

40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

Absolutely. Past Me had very similar tastes in fic to Current Me, so there are a lot of fics that I've forgotten enough that they feel like new, but they're still baked in a way that I like.

With podfic, it's a bit more floaty - I'm still climbing a skill curve of 'how to podfic well' so when I listen to the older stuff I get a lot of twitches of, I would do that differently now, and it can get a little distracting. Still, I have a lot of favourites from the past year or so.

17. A trope you’ll never, ever write for.

Apart from like... sexual kinks that are squicks or I don't feel I can write well, there aren't too many things that a hard NO for me. Because the minute I decide something is a hard no, my brain starts to go "well, but how WOULD you write it to make it NOT a hard no?" This is how I ended up writing a whole soulmate fic when that is generally VERY MUCH a hard no for me. O_o;;;

But there are two things I can probably see that happening with: pregnancy/mpreg and de-aging. Those aren't just hard nos but they're VISCERAL hard nos for me. There are all kinds of bodily autonomy/loss of agency tropes wrapped up in both of those things that are like... sitting right on the line between squick and trigger for me. So I just can't see myself ever wanting to get anywhere near them. And you know what? Toss A/B/O in there, too. It's the same set of issues for me. :P Like, I have no problem with other people liking these tropes, but they are very VERY much not for me.

23. Do you prefer prompts and challenges, or completely independent ideas?

I like both equally! I have PLENTY of my own ideas, and I enjoy the building of a story from conception of the idea to published product. But there's also an inherent challenge in fleshing out an idea you didn't come up with on your own into a fic catered to someone else's tastes and preferences that brings it's own sense of joy and satisfaction to it. Especially if that person is a friend. ^_^ I know I kind of copped out on the "what was the best comment you ever received?" question a few answers back, but I will admit that there is a particular kind of joy that happens in this particular scenario:

You write a fic for a friend in an anonymous exchange, and said friend comes bursting into your messages squeaking with excitement about a fic they received in an exchange that they REALLY LOVE and telling you all about how good it is and how they want to be friends with the author and you're just sitting there bursting like "I HAVE GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS, THE BAD NEWS IS NO NEW FRIEND FOR YOU, BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT'S BECAUSE WE ARE ALREADY FRIENDS. :D :D :D"... and knowing you CAN'T TELL THEM until reveals are over. XD

Or when they just straight up burst into your messages/email like "I KNOW YOU WROTE ME THIS FIC, WHEN DID YOU EVEN HAVE TIME, WTFFFFFF???? ALSO THANK YOU." ;D

(You should all know who you are. XD)

things I'm working on (or thinking about but not actually working on because that's who I am at the moment...)

Rot (DMBJ). Putting this one here since I haven't finished writing the last chapter yet, even though most of it is published. No lie this story totally consumed me for like a month. It was supposed to be super horror/supernatural, along the lines of The Guest, but it became a lot more low key creepy/unsettling vibes? Took me a while to stop being disappointed in it for not being what I intended, but I finally started to just appreciate it as is.

Da Qing/Shen Wei friendship quest thing (Guardian) that I started thinking about nearly a year ago and have written NOTHING for so far lol But I need more of these two being kickass awesome bros who bond over the hardships of dealing with ZYL on a daily basis.

A super depressing Wu Xie/Pangzi friendship thing that takes place during Xiaoge's time behind the gate. This whole thing literally spawned out of one line in Rot and explores the difficulties PangXie's friendship endured during that time.

PingXie ghost AU. I went to a spooky fiction writing panel a few weeks ago and one of the writers said being a ghost is basically being in a constant limbo of slowly losing your sense of self and my whole brain screeched to a halt and I mentally slammed my hand on the table and screamed XIAOGE THE SAD AMNESIAC GHOST. So that's a thing now.

Now that I'm done with uni (8 years and 4 degrees later *weeps in student*) and I don't really have a job yet (*weeps in adult*) I'm hoping to devote more time to writing. There's several on this list that are so nebulous they're not worth mentioning, because my brain keeps generating more and more even as I frantically try to get all the ideas down and beg for it to stop.

Feel free to ask me about any of these or hmu if you need a sounding board for your own ideas. I want to talk writing with people, you feel me?

Not Me: A Character Guide

I've thrown this together mostly for @daydreamorama who wanted a quick guide on who is who in Not Me. I've deliberately kept it quite generic and vague to avoid spoilers. Feel free to DM me if you need clarification on anything

(I'm doing this in order of appearance and just covering the main cast)

White - The protagonist. Takes the place of his twin brother (Black) to find out who put him in a coma. Brain smart, not very street smart (at first anyway)

Tod - Black's classmate. Incredibly rich businessman. He convinces White to take Black's place and find out what happened to him.

Gram - Black's best friend. He's the first one of Black's friends that White meets when he starts posing as his brother.

Yok - My son. Part of Black's gang. Easily identifiable by the bird tattoos on his arm. He's an artist.

Sean - Also part of Black's gang but doesn't get along well with him, which means he doesn't like White (who is posing as Black) either. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that doesn't stay that way for long.

Gumpa - Owns the garage where Black and his gang operate from and (sort of?) work in. Kind of a pseudo father figure to them all.

Dan - A famous graffiti artist that Yok is a fan of
