Been reading a lot of new sci-fi and fantasy books recently

The steerswoman series by Rosemary Kirstein has got to a huge highlight, though.

God it’s up there with the Old Kingdom books for me, kind of similar vibes, too. The character writing is immaculate, the plot so well paced, the world intriguing and well thought out…

I went in mostly blind and I’m really glad I did. The plot unfolds in layers, each book revealing something new… it’s masterful. I know more then the characters at times and yet I’m still left guessing and the plot never dissapoints.

My one gripe is that the series is unfinished. Gosh I wish I could read the rest of it now!

wait would talking animals in media in the dark materials universe also have daemons??? like obviously animals dont have daemons but like. talking ones are presumably sentient and would probably in the context of the story have a soul so like it would culturally make sense to give them daemons to make them anthropomorphised.

I imagine anthro characters like uhhhh disney's robin wood would have daemons because they're basically just humans (would be funny if like robin wood, a fox, did NOT have a fox daemon lol)

but like. How would warrior cats work in this universe?????? where the characters are animals but sentient???

Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

I'm really bad at finishing stuff (I never finish anything) but I worked on a short smut piece for kinktober today.

It involves the prompts Being In Heat, Oral Fixation and Double Penetration. It's about a human who is experiencing his Lizardfolk roommate go through a heat and wants to help him with it.

I'm really hoping that I continue working on on it. Even if it sucks it would just feel nice to complete something.

Hi, I'd love to! Being a selkie has actually been popping back up into my head lately, so perfect timing!

To start off, in Celtic mythology, selkies are faefolk that can turn into seals when they wear a seal skin coat. A very common thing seen in selkie folklore is a human stealing a selkie's seal coat and hiding it, this forces the selkie to stay on land and marry the human who stole their coat.

So selkie play is when at least one person takes on the role of a selkie - like how in pet play, at least one person takes on the role of a pet. The typical dominant role in a selkie play dynamic would be the human who has taken the selkie's pelt.

For me a lot of what I like about selkie play is the idea of getting to be an innocent inhuman thing who doesn't know about the human world and is being kept captive by a human who is going to take advantage of that naivety for their own pleasure and amusement.

The cc's ship their characters together all the dang time. There ain't anything weird about it
