& it's like the thing is gideon IS terrible butch stereotype #1 like she's the service butch jock who puts everyone b4 herself to an insane extent, covers up all her emotions w jokes, has this deep seated shame she cant talk to anyone about & inside is the saddest loneliest girl in the world who is literally nothing if she is not servicing another woman. & on the one hand im not sure if i feel totally comfortable with this- even tho it's obvious from kiriona that it's definitely an intentional critique, i wonder if giving this character to a butch was intentional as well or just stereotyping- but on the other hand. that's literally me she's sooo me i can't be mad that the butch is like this hwen i am the butch who's like that.
#tamsyn is too smart & intentional for her not to have thought about choosing to make a butch this way. right?#i feel like it hasn't really.. the connection btwn her being butch & her being Like That hasn't been explored that much#in text perhaps bc that's just not a thing#but fandom has largely ignored it too#so that bit of doubt of like is this A Message or is this just a bad stereotype kinda stings#but it's a true stereotype. like. i dont think me & every butch out there are just obsessed w her bc she's cool as hell. it's bc she's#<3 butch blue tm <3#like what really solidifies her as butch as opposed to idk camilla or anyone else besides word of god is that she's so fucking sad in this#very specific butch way yk#n e ways i overidentify w her in an unhealthy way!!#the locked tomb#gideon nav#butch#op

happy pride month!
i figured its as good a time as any for me to finally post my gay book recs 😌
theyre overwhelmingly YA as im a young adult and thats what ive been reading, but im widening my horizons, so stay tuned for more mature entries! ill be updating this list as i read more gay lit.
WLW 4 or 5 out of 5 stars
- She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen (les/bi, enemies to lovers, sports, set in high school, YA)
- The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth (great writing, appealing characters and authentic chemistry, i think les/les, YA)
- Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth (also amazing, also les/les, has heavier themes, YA)
- Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (historical - 1950s, asian american sanfran culture, butch/femme, YA, deserves its popularity. do Not read the spin off its not worth it)
- Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron (fairytale retelling, feminist focus, les/les, YA)
- This Poison Heart + This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron (urban fantasy, bi/les? i think, poisonous plants, greek mythology, two books, YA)
- How to Excavate a Heart by Jake Maia Arlow (les/les, YA, lots of "reclaimed" slurs, lots of secondhand embarrassment, but if you wanted something seasonal for winter here you go - its not bad!)
- A Spindle Splintered + A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow (fairy tales, lesbian mc, other wlw side characters, fun and short, written for tumblr and its obvious, sometimes depressingly real)
- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amar El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (time traveling, enemies to lovers, short chapters, tries to be poetic and sometimes it succeeds sometimes it doesnt)
- Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (horrors of the ocean, it doesnt get better - no happy ending, still beautiful though)
- Salt Slow by Julia Armfield (women-focused horror short stories antology, i would call it bisexual moreso than lesbian, definitely worth a read)
- Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flag (a story that takes decades and focuses on many characters, two of the most prominent are in a same-sex relationship, lovely and bittersweet at times)
- The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall (set in the early 20th century and quite sad, a very relatable story of a gnc lesbian woman growing up and living as an "invert", looking for her place in the world)
- Affinity by Sarah Waters (historical - late 19th century - mystery, set in a large part in a women's prison, mc suffers from depression, spiritualism is a strong theme)
- Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin (contemporary litfic about a depressed lesbian with severe anxiety, a tough read if you relate but SO good, and against all odds it has a happy ending)
MLM 4 or 5 out of 5 stars
- If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzalez and Kale Dietrich (gay/bi?, YA, secret dating, two boysband members, alternating perspectives)
- Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall (fake dating, cringe but somehow fun when you get into it, very organic writing)
- Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (gay/bi, YA, enemies to lovers, actually fun!, better than the movie^tm, a bit cringe with the ~progressive~ lines and fanficky moments)
- Time to Shine by Rachel Reid (gay/bi, sports romance, there were so many beds and still they chose to sleep in one together, very fun + funny)
- Icebreaker by A. L. Graziadei (bi/gay, rivals to lovers, YA, sports romance, a little internet-y at times, theres a side poly relationship)
- More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera (NOT a romance, super depressing, a lot of deep homophobia, but also beautiful. i gave it 5/5 on goodreads, YA)
- Masters of Death by Olivie Blake (a fun urban fantasy with a large, found-familyish cast, some slight Harry Potter references and a lot of humor and existential pondering, lovers to strangers to enemies to lovers, bi?/bi)
- All For The Game series by Nora Sakavic (gay/bi m/m, such a guilty pleasure but its SO good, its like a sports anime but 1. the sport is made up 2. its actually gay 3. theres the mafia involved??, very early 2010s with how edgy it is but its worth it i promise. a LOT of trigger warnings though, if its important to you - CHECK THEM BEFOREHAND)
honorable mentions that arent very gay focused but are very good
- If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio (campus novel/dark academia, the m/m is mostly subtext, heavy style of writing but so worth it, shakespeare abound, please read it)
- Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio (a halloween-y mystery novella about rats, mushrooms, academia and journalism, a Very Slight f/f element but its enough for me to put it here)
- The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (YA, fantasy, literally so good, not much of the m/m romance but when it happens it HAPPENS, 5/5 im obsessed with this series)
- The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler (a short sci-fi novel about bringing mammoths back, multiple povs, one of those is focused on a gay couple - which is irrelevant to the story but i loved the book so im using this opportunity to promote it)
- When Among Crows by Veronica Roth (polish folklore inspired urban fantasy, a 3 person found family, very short (160 pages) and reads quickly, if youre polish yourself though be prepared for cringing - language errors abound, a little m/m)
- Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke (a short epistolary novel about a guy with an office job whose soul got sucked into the Slack app. written entirely in Slack messages. VERY funny, quite thought-provoking and at times beautiful! has a small sprinkling of m/m)
less than 4 out of 5 stars but i read them so ill state my opinion anyways
- A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo (YA, wlw - bi/les, great writing boring story, gnc lesbian compared to a boy later revealed to identify as nonbinary, homophobic slurs "reclaimed", cheating, unfinished sideplots)
- Ash by Malinda Lo (YA, wlw, bi/les i think, fairytales, fantasy, uncomfortable het age gap, moral of the story - love triumphs all)
- The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun (YA, mlm, gay/gay?, lots of awkward internet popculture references, slurs, writing mostly fun and engaging but at times felt like an educational PSA)
- The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling (YA, wlw, les/bi, marketed as lesbian Twilight - do not be fooled, the author is weird abt race too though, the romance isnt really fleshed out)
- These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever (mlm, an attempt at dark academia, the start was interesting but then it turned into disgusting fetishization of violence in a gay relationship, written by a tif and you can tell)
- Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (the mc is bi and her best friend is a lesbian, the characters are all awful, it kinda felt lesbophobic at times but i dont have proof)
- Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar (wlw, YA, as you can guess fake dating, also rivals to lovers iirc?, its nice but just didnt catch my attention much)
- A Million to One by Adiba Jaigirdar (wlw, YA, a heist on the Titanic, i dont know why i keep giving this author a chance, you need to suspend your disbelief so much its inadvisable for atheists to read it)
- Honeymoon for One by Rachel Bowdler (winter holiday romance, les/bi ("pan"), lots of grief and conflict and not enough of the romance developing, so many awful mothers??)
- Running With Lions by Julian Winters (YA, mlm bi/gay, the writing isnt that good, a bit of misogyny)
- Don't Want You Like a Best Friend/More Than a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban (victorian era les/les romance, a very light read - dont expect a historical drama, theres a large focus on other m/f pairings. warning: lowkey step-sibling "incest" - read the book description)
- You're the Problem, It's You by Emma R. Alban (sequel to the previous position, victorian era mlm gay/gay romance, dont expect historical accuracy here)
- You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron (wlw YA slasher horror with supernatural elements, the final girl trope plays a big role, i dont read horror often but this one is not good even though i like the author)
- The Magic Between by Stephanie Hoyt (gay/bi mlm, main character with OCD, an interesting though maybe overdone magic system, overall though just a goofy tumblr romance - nothing special, but good fun)
- The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch (bi/? mlm, holidays with magical royal families, romcom but not a lot of the rom - you can tell the author usually writes fantasy and not romance, fun and silly but nothing amazing)
sekcja polska 🇵🇱

The Ardwin Experience:
Originally made a catboy pugilist slightly based on my cat. Decided pretty quickly that I wasn't vibing with Ul'dah (sorry Ul'dah fans, i promise i have grown to appreciate it <3)
Decide I want to try starting somewhere else. Limsa looks cool. Hmm, should I make another catboy or something different? Oooo i can make a cool butch lady, hell yeah let's do that!!
Proceed to create cool butch. Notable appearance decisions I remember making: I was no longer dying my hair irl because I had to be Employable (TM) so she got my former blue/teal hair, although not nearly as bright as mine was. Also the odd eyes were going for a little bit of a Siberian Husky vibe. Notably, she is NOT max height, only like 65 or so on the slider; I guess 'above-average' felt more interesting to me than the extreme end of the slider?
I know from other MMOs that I usually like playing melee classes. Only starter melee option in Limsa is marauder. Cool butch now has an axe.
Mash random name generator a bunch of times until I feel like I have a good understanding of The Vibe/some syllables I liked. (Was not aware of the actual lore naming conventions at the time.) Something-win? Ardwin? Yeah that's good, pretty catchy, sounds a little like "hard win" or "hard wind." (No last name, for several reasons.)
My video game OCs usually develop pretty organically in response to game events - I get more and more of an idea of how they would react, whether certain things strike me as "oh that's a part of their backstory now," etc, as I play through the game with them - so I don't go really in-depth on backstory/personality/etc to start with.
My main personality "starting points" that I remember for Ardwin were: butch (obviously), around a 5 on the Kinsey scale, fairly cheerful/positive attitude, high-energy, light sprinkling of Gideon Nav vibes.
Anyways. Cut to me half a year later in Shadowbringers losing my mind because And They Were Soulmates (oh my god they were soulmates).
It's interesting looking at how she's drifted from some of those starting points (which was why they were starting points), but most of those "drifts" have been added nuance and development, rather than a total departure. Still butch. Kinsey scale is out the window at this point in favor of just "queer," I think. She's still cheerful/positive in some ways, but also a lot more serious after getting whacked with the Trauma Hammer countless times via MSQ and taking on a lot of responsibility towards protecting everyone else. A little bit more mellow, also partly for the same reasons. And finally, she sort of got an (unintentional) boost to Gideon vibes on account of goth gf, lol.
8/31/24
What was going through your mind when making your wol (oc)? What was the process like?
#ffxiv#ardwin tag#ardwin lore#i'm glad that i went into it expecting a lot of organic character development#because I had no idea at the time just how amazing FFXIV was for that (I was previously coming from WoW.....)#and i love how she turned out so much!!!

I couldn't find a transmasc butch flag, so i combined the these three flags in different ways. Which do yall like more?
Top three row, from left to right
1: blue transmasc and butch (too much like angled aroace tho)
2: all three with mixed red and pink
3: kind of a sunset mix of all three, I'll call it sunset transmasc butch (ik sunset butch already exists)
Bottom three row, left to right
4: blue transmasc and butch but mixed more (i swear I've seen this one before)
5: all three, lighter than number 1, (my fave lmao, looks similar to the lesbian flag but with some transmasc vibes)
6: pastel of the butch and pink&blue flag (more for soft tm butch types)

20+ Books That You (Might Actually Want) To Read During Pride Month!
Right, so. I got annoyed after seeing the list referenced in this post last night, told myself that my books are all packed up so I couldn’t do anything about it, and lasted all of a whopping 10 minutes before picking up my phone and attempting to make my own list instead. Behold, my from-memory attempt to present 20 books with strong LGBTQ plots, characters, and/or authors, that DON’T just rely on Suffering and Identity Politics and are... you know... fun.
Listed in alphabetical order by title. Links take you to Bookshop.org, where you can buy them from your local independent bookstore at a discount and NOT from the evil empire.
1. A Master of Djinn – P. Djeli Clark * author of color * steampunk Cairo in 1912 * djinn! magic! murder mystery! * butch Arab lesbian main character * devout hijabi Muslim badass assistant * anticolonial alternate history
2. An Accident of Stars – Foz Meadows (Sequel: A Tyranny of Queens) * trans author * bi, pan, trans, aro representation * racially diverse characters * all female POV characters * high-fantasy world adventures
3. Boyfriend Material – Alexis Hall * queer author * look I love this book SO MUCH and have absolutely screamed about it before but also I LOVE IT SO MUCH * contemporary M/M fake dating in modern London, complete with full cast of disaster found-family queer friends * it is. fucking. HILARIOUS. I almost died the first time reading it * there is a sequel called HUSBAND MATERIAL scheduled to be released in 2022; I am a normal amount of excited for this book
4. Gideon the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir (Sequel: Harrow the Ninth) * the book cover says “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted palace in space!” * that is exactly what you get * slow-burn enemies-to-lovers F/F main romance * I cannot describe this book, it is dark, genre-bendy, science fiction-y, Hunger-Games-with-lesbian-necromancers-in space? Kinda? I have literally never read anything like it * also fucking HILARIOUS
5. One Last Stop – Casey McQuiston * queer author (who wrote Red White and Royal Blue) * bisexual fat girl from the South/lesbian-daughter-of-Chinese immigrants from the 1970s-riot-grrl main romance * time traveling mystery involving the Q train in Brooklyn (mentions Brighton Beach ahem) * magical realism * many more found-family chaotic queers including a trans Latino psychic and a Black accountant by day/drag queen by night and the mean little gay disaster who has a hopeless crush on them
6. Parasol Protectorate (series) – Gail Carriger * this is one of my favorite series, and there are five books: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, and Timeless * steampunk vampires/werewolves late Victorian London, like Jane Austen crossed with P.G. Wodehouse (they are all fucking hilarious) * pretty much everyone is queer; we got your flamboyantly camp gay vampires (Lord Akeldama ftw!) We got your gay werewolves! We got your lesbian French inventors! We got your big disaster idiot werewolf main male love interest! We got your crazy adventures! You name it we got it! * two spin-off novellas: Romancing the Werewolf (M/M) and Romancing the Inventor (F/F) * she has a ton more books in this same universe and writes sexy queer supernatural romance as G.L. Carriger
7. Plain Bad Heroines – Emily M. Danforth * queer author * historical horror-comedy set between a haunted girls’ school in early-1900s New England and in the modern day * all sapphic female main characters * plays with style/form/voice, a story within a story within a story
8. Red White and Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston * you’ve probably heard of it but here I am reccing it again * the biracial son of the first female POTUS falls in love with the Prince of England; shenanigans absolutely ensue * yes, the British monarchy still absolutely sucks a big fat dick * hilarious, heartfelt, reads like fanfic, just go get it, it will change your life
9. Rosaline Palmer Takes The Cake – Alexis Hall * same author as Boyfriend Material, this is his newest * bisexual female protagonist * absolutely perfect satire of The Great British Bake Off (you can tell this man has watched EVERY SINGLE SERIES and all of the holiday specials) * sweet and surprisingly thoughtful
10. Starless – Jacqueline Carey * genderqueer/transmasculine main character of color * almost all main characters are brown people! * lush Middle Eastern/India-inspired fantasy world * gods, prophecies, monsters * the best Oh God Why Me I Am A Horrible Mentor wise-old-mentor
11. The Future of Another Timeline – Annalee Newitz * nonbinary (they/them) author * time travel but make it The Handmaid’s Tale * will probably make your head explode * feminist, queer, subversive * diverse characters
12. The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee * queer author * technically YA but historical/magical adventure set in the 1700s * bisexual disaster main protagonist and love interest of color * (mis)adventures across Europe * has a sequel (see below) with the badass asexual sister of the protagonist
13. The Hate Project – Kris Ripper * nonbinary/genderqueer author * M/M enemies to lovers/sex with no strings attached (spoiler alert: strings attached) * HECKING HILARIOUS * sweet, escapist, and very low stakes * diverse characters, including fat protagonist with realistic anxiety disorder
14. The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy – Mackenzi Lee * PIRATES, obviously * sequel to Gentleman’s Guide * asexual female protagonist * strong queerplatonic f/f friendship * more historical/magical 18th century adventures
15. The Last Rune (series) – Mark Anthony * Imma be real with you chief, I haven’t read this series since I was a clueless teenager with no idea why I liked Gay Stuff so much, so if it does turn out to suck now, don’t throw rotten veggies at me * but especially since it was written in the NINETIES, this series was hella progressive?! * gay characters, disabled characters, characters of color, all playing significant and heroic roles in six-book epic fantasy cycle * people from Earth end up in high-fantasy world of Eldh * endgame M/M romance for the main character * books out of print, I think, but you can find them cheap somewhere like AbeBooks; first one (Beyond the Pale) linked above
16. The Library of the Unwritten – A.J. Hackwith * queer author * heaven-hell-Valhalla supernatural adventures * The Good Place x Good Omens x Lucifer x The Librarians * Pansexual Black badass female heroine * Queer found families * The Sassiest TM Bisexual Villain Turned Reluctant Hero (is he my favorite? Why on earth would you think that.)
17. The Priory of the Orange Tree – Samantha Shannon * epic doorstopper science fiction/historical fantasy set in a vaguely 16th-century world * main F/F romance between a queen and her sorceress bodyguard * sassy old gay alchemist whose backstory will give you Feelings * so many strong women and characters of color * no homophobia! marriage is fully gender-neutral, spouses are called “companions”
18. The Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller * likewise one you have probably heard of but still * a little light on the myth/historical part imho, but the writing is beautiful and will give you many feelings * M/M romance between Achilles and Patroclus * reimagining of The Iliad (her other book Circe is also really good)
19 The Stars are Legion – Kameron Hurley * all-female apocalyptic space opera * messy messy antiheroines * grimdark war fantasy * queer sci-fi drama
20. Witchmark – C.L. Polk * author of color * M/M romance * main character is a veteran and a doctor dealing with his own hidden magic and repressed war trauma * gaslamp fantasy set in a world reminiscent of post-WWI England * strong sibling relationship

that one!! the point where they make butch perverse like why!! why do u hate two characters to the point u’re willing to make one such a creepy pervert that has almost zero respect for women and then the other one so internally misogynistic and have her settle for the creep!! i don’t get it like i’ll take too overly sweet with no issues (which is a whole other topic bc the blues deserve justice) and stoic asshole x overbearing asshole (bc sorry to say, they really do come off as assholes who think they’re too good for everyone and everything🤷🏻♀️) over a creep x 1 step away from misogynist!! like u could argue that it plays into the boys being “bad” at first or smthn but then why are the other two not pervs? menaces? downright disturbing the entire female population? like ugh ughhhh i’m so glad so many people are writing them differently now bc it used to be such a struggle to find a good fic. also i’ve found my people i’m a hater too i won’t care what people do or ship just goddamn allow the other characters some dimension ffs😭
LMAOOOO for real
if i had to rank the color code ships by how much i hate their fanfic dynamic i'd say:
1. stoic brick x stuck up blossom - i straight up hate this one the most because im tired of seeing such a boring brick and reading works where he's only this intelligent, stoic jackass is not fun. that's just a reddit guy. blossom is also unbearable sometimes in these fics
2. creepy butch x not like other girls bc - this one speaks for itself and the actions he does are borderline.... Not Okay (tm) lmao. actually this one is a high contender for 1st place as well but the reds get me more mad lmaoooo
3. overly sweet blues - this isn't a bad thing but writers just make it boring and add nothing else to them. i like fluff a lot so that's why its better than the others (and it's not problematic at all sjdffkhkdfk) but the blues end up becoming background characters as soon as they get together. What am i supposed to think after that? ok? now all they are is the relationship.
it sucks sometimes because i read a fic where maybe half the cast are like my perfect headcanon characterizations and then the other half are unbearable tropes lmao (which totally didn't JUST happen whattttt)

I just spent an unreasonable amount of time on a vent post then tumblr just decided to eat it. But im so irritated that im typing it out again.
My roommate is a White Enby(tm) and besides their atrocious eating habits (they eat almost nothing and exercise all the time like hello ed?) i'm not sure whether im experiencing ethnic or gender microaggressions, or if given the way White People view gender as inherently based in whiteness, is there even a meaningful distinction there for me.
Like i'm getting strong 'women and people we see as women' vibes from them and they dont seem too happy about the fact that as a trans man i'm not just some hairless androdgynous twink. I'm getting the distinct feeling that they have misunderstood the concept of masculinity and what it means to be a masculine person, and dont actually want to live with someone who isnt just Butch Woman Lite (tm).
But also with microaggressions theyre often subconcsious and its possible my roommate is just having a harder time living with someone from another culture than they through they would. Like they let me put the nazar above the doorway, but laugh at my poor german and make no effort even though theyre the monoglot and i speak 4 other languages and am a certified english teacher. They think my food tastes great but complain that it smells too strong (dude wth food is going to smell like food when its cooking, open a window afterwards you dont gotta teach me like im a child, its not my fault you never cook with flavor and also decided to make the living room your bedroom so you practically live inside the kitchen with its smells and noise).
But mostly i've been really hairy my whole life, even before transitioning, and i'm getting a little tired of hearing almost daily complaints about the hair 'problem' like i clean the shower drain every time and wash the sink when i shave, but being told that i need to wash the shower floor after every shower because there are 3 hairs left that i missed feels a bit microaggressive. So does being told that my shit stinks like a man (seriously!! This person literally thinks their shit dont stink. Is your afab body inherently cleaner than mine because youre not on hrt? Or is it because youre a hairless blonde and blue eyed german with a buzzcut who eats nothing but bread and veggie hotdogs)
Am i too nonwestern for you? Did i not fulfill your White Liberal Diversity Fantasy in the correct way? Is my masculinity too masculine for you to pretend im not a man? It really feels like theyre unable to reconcile their self image as Woke(tm) with the reality of their tiny comfort zone. This person wants to live in a diverse communal household but apparently that means living exclusively with other white, western european, afab enbies/lesbians (aka women and people they see as Woman Lite) who are exactly like them but wear a slightly different undercut.
#the microaggressions are getting old fast#i almost want to take the potential roommate with a dog so they have someone elses hair to complain about for once#yes ik how bad that sounds#they keep posting for the 3rd roommate in womens mailing lists and picking the most terfy looking lesbians to meet with us#i dont think they want to live with anyone more masc than them (that bar is so low its underground)#and they have somehow found the only 5 monoglots in this entire city like Nobody speaks just 1 language here except apparently these people

Okay no longer on mobile. Prepare yourself for some beautiful boys.
1. Lord Clapham
An English wooden doll made c. 1690-1700, currently held by the V&A Museum. Besides the clothes and wig, he is physically identical to his wife, Lady Clapham. That’s a common theme among western antique dolls- since the female ones don’t usually have breasts, the only thing to gender them is clothing and hairstyle. Mattel’s Creatable World dolls aren’t as novel and groundbreaking as they think.
2. Male French fashion dolls
Note that I did say usually up there. This doll by DeHors was painted to be a man in particular, because Masculinity = Angry Eyebrows, I guess? He also has applied facial hair, probably in the same mohair as his wig
...that IS the same face mold as their lady dolls, though, and he’s probably on the same body.
These Hurets follow a more common pattern, where it’s just patently the same doll with a short wig and trousers. Is that doll a man? Is that doll a butch lesbian rocking the dapper look c. 1870? You decide!
And then share it publicly if you decide it’s the second one, because it’s always fun to watch the vocal minority of rabid conservative doll collectors have a conniption fit. (You’d think they’d have learned by now- antique dolls are an mlm/wlw solidarity zone.)
3. Male china dolls
Aw, he won a blue ribbon in 1991! Good job, little fellow!
Male china dolls are a bit more definitively gendered, because they have molded hair. However, while heads with short hair were usually used for boy dolls, they could sometimes be dressed as girls; in most periods of china doll popularity, it was acceptable for very little girls to have short hair. And as with French fashions, the bodies were pretty much identical most of the time.
4. The Kaiser Baby, but only as a Black doll
I’m not normally a baby doll fan, but this little guy by Kammer and Reinhardt has been so cute every time I’ve seen him. The sculpt looks nightmarish as a white doll and precious as a Black doll. I have no idea why. My doll friends see it, too, so I guess it’s a Thing.
5. GI Joe (kind of)
I don’t actually like GI Joe, to be clear. Totally uninteresting to me, plus the whole Die And Kill For America(TM) narrative. But whatever gets closer to breaking down the barriers around little boys playing with dolls is a tiny hint of progress on that axis. It used to be more socially accepted until the mid-20th century screwed things up, and I want all kids to be able to enjoy the fun, creativity, and social understanding that comes from playing with dolls.
And yes, GI Joe is a doll. He’s a doll, doll, doll. Die mad about it, Hasbro.
So there’s a selection of my favorite male dolls (except the last one). I won’t be rushing out ad buying them any time soon- not that I could, for most of the examples. But I certainly appreciate them!
(Again, except GI Joe. He’s there for conceptual reasons.)
Are there any male (or male-dressed, gender is bullshit) dolls you've admired?
I appreciate the artistry behind male dolls, but I’ve never had much interest in collecting them. I never even had Ken dolls as a kid; Barbie just seemed so much more exciting. But I can share some photos of male antique dolls when I’m not on mobile, if you like.
#dolls#male dolls#antique dolls#vintage dolls#military cw#no I'm not counting Ken. Ken is an accessory for Barbie. are the male French fashions also an accessory for lady dolls? possibly#but consider: they're beautiful#Ken is not beautiful by my arbitrary metric#so no Ken
