Thinking of a version of 13x04 The Big Empty where Mia the shapeshifter therapist offers to appear to Dean as someone he lost, and he looks like he's going to turn her down, but then he hesitates, and gives her this long evaluating look. And then the scene cuts, and you think Mia is going to appear as Mary, because that's who they were talking about before. You see Dean's reaction, and it's this blank kind of shock, because he was expecting to see what he sees, but he didn't realize how it would hit him. And you hear "Hello Dean". And it's Cas. And he doesn't look right, Mia doesn't have his mannerisms, and she doesn't have the outfit, just a plain white button-down and dark slacks, but she looks enough like him. Dean's about to say something, but he can't. He just swallows and grits his jaw and stares. And Mia/Cas says something like "I'm sorry I left you, I know it's hard. But I love you; and that love will stay with you." And you the viewer don't think too too much of the word "love", because Cas has used it before, love like family, love like friends. But anyways, Dean hears that and he frowns, like he's trying to internalize it, he's trying to get some closure out of this, but he can't. He shuts his eyes, with furrowed brows, and he's regretting that he agreed to this at all. And then Mia/Cas moves closer to Dean. She puts her hand on his cheek, and Dean sucks in a breath but he keeps his eyes closed. And then she leans in and kisses him so, so softly. Because she thinks they were like that. And at first Dean trembles at the kiss, but he keeps his eyes closed and lets it happen. Only after a few seconds does he jerk back, wide-eyed, looking terrified. And of course Mia/Cas is immediately worried and sorry that she made a mistake, and she says "Dean--" and is about to apologize. But Dean just turns around and storms out. Dean rushes away from the house, breathing hard like he'd just lost a fight. He gets in the car and slams the door. And his expression collapses, hes looks shattered, and he gasps, shaken and hurting, and tears run down his face.

And that's it. No further discussion or explanation of what happened. No comment from Dean. And then 13x05 Advanced Thanatology happens as normal.

Hob’s name has never struck me as odd? I see a lot of comments in his tag laughing at how weird his name is (even though Hobbes is also definitely still a name?) but if you understand where English nickname conventions come from it begins to make perfect sense.

Imagine you’ve got a village where everyone has the same half dozen first names. Let’s go with these three as examples: Robert, Richard, Margaret. Their nicknames include Rob, Rich/Rick, and Maggie.

But everyone’s got those nicknames too! So you switch the nicknames up too for variety. You play around with them. So now you’ve got Margaret = Maggie = Peggy. See?

It might sound weird to change the first letter but that is also where we get (haha) “Dick” from Richard. Richard = Rich = Rick = Dick.

And finally Robert = Rob = Bob, and you guessed it = Hob. It might be less common than it once was but it perfectly falls within English historical nickname conventions.

the thing about reigen arataka is that he is literally just some guy who got sucked into a world of psychics by chance, and he decided to just roll with it until suddenly he's accidentally adopted like four very powerful psychic kids (+1 non-psychic kid) and maybe sort of fallen in love with another very powerful psychic (who happens to also be an ex-terrorist) and he just. he's some random guy. he opened a shady business because he got bored of being a salesman, he decided to pretend to be a psychic on a whim, he's been lonely his entire life, he only lets people in if he thinks he can use them except, oops, suddenly he cares about them more than he's ever cared about himself and oops he keeps getting pulled into life-or-death esper fights because somehow, even in a world full of people who can sense other psychics, everyone still believes his lies. and he doesn't back down!! he's some random guy and he picks up a gun and points it at the face of a man who could kill him without lifting a finger because maybe his kids are all super powerful psychics but they're also KIDS and maybe reigen has never had a single friend in his entire life and maybe he didn't know he even had it in him to care about people but it'll be a cold day in hell before he lets anyone hurt mob. he's some random guy and he walks headfirst into a tornado spun into being by the most powerful psychic in the world, who has already thrown several other powerful psychics out of the way like they're toys, and he tells serizawa - his only protection - to stay behind and he charges straight towards this beacon of mass destruction that no one has been able to even slow down. because maybe reigen is just some random guy who accidentally fell headfirst into the world of espers, but mob is just a kid. and reigen, just some random guy, stops him in his tracks, holds his wrists with his bare hands, and admits that he's always been just some guy. he's just some random guy. but he still cares about mob, even though he's certain mob will hate him.

and then it's all over, and reigen is just some random guy who got sucked into the world of psychics by chance, and he's never been cared about by anyone before, but now he has the most powerful people in the world all in his office throwing him a surprise birthday party because despite everything, despite knowing who he really is, they didn't reject him. he's only here by chance, because he happened to have a poster in the right place at the right time, because mob happened to be looking at his surroundings, because he dropped his tea and mob was quick enough to catch it. he's here by accident, but there's nowhere else he'd rather be, even when he's one of the only ordinary people in a room full of psychics and he can't tell which one of them made him faceplant into his cake, even when they're making fun of him for crying, even when he stills feels so underserving because he's not an esper, he's not a hero - he's not even a good person - he's just some random guy

Things that can be simultaneously true:

1 ) Codependency that would be unhealthy in real life can be really sexy and appealing in fic, and in romance stories in general, because those aren’t real life. We want to see the excesses of that emotion so we can feel it vicariously as far removed as we are as readers by the barrier of the written word. Writing characters who are obsessively in love is an effective tool in that regard even if they shouldn’t serve as educational models of an ideal relationship (whatever that is).

2 ) Some of what y’all are labeling as “unhealthily codependent” (even if it’s praise of a story where y’all find the codependency appealing as part of the story!)… isn’t unhealthily codependent?? Sometimes people do just spend a lot of time together when they love each other and make one another their priority? Oftentimes, that’s the person that people choose to marry (or equivalent) and the whole point of that decision and arrangement is you become one another’s priority???

Like I’m just gonna throw this out there as a litmus test for fandom to try out but maybe (when it’s adult characters involved) just ask “is this unhealthily, clinically codependent, like these people can’t psychologically function without the other, OR would they just be really sad without the other because they’re effectively married and they’ve made one another a priority and they could, in fact, after they’ve grieved pull themselves together and continue to function, even if it’s not instantaneous??”
