Damirae Week 2023 (Day 3): Book/Movie Inspired AU --DUNE--
Watching Dune at theatres was an absolute experience I would trade for nothing, so I took some of my favorite scenes for Day 3 🤩 Highly recommend "Quicksilver & Blue" by ViLaVi on AO3 for a fictional take on a damirae-dune AU

It’s horrible how my design course has killed my enjoyment in creativity because all they want is finished pieces founded in nothing but a spontaneous mark just to hang at some concrete art gallery or to sell to some “join our revolution” comfy business-casual company with a prison cell wellness room. I’m not saying that it’s “not art” —cos that’s a different post altogether— it’s that the ethos behind this particular formula for art education is ruining the way we think about creation.
Design courses (and other art courses I’ve heard?) are no longer teaching artists or designers techniques, drawing skills, art fundamentals and allowing them to find their own voice so much as they are only instructing how to tic boxes alongside pushing corporate and classist motivated style/methodology bias aimed at producing workers, not creatives, not to mention providing Adobe with endless funds for their despicable scam programs. That’s it. My creativity is only a means to money for them, and if they can extract the process of creation from me without the complex creative intimacy involved in it, they know they can churn out products and services faster and it’s concerning some lecturers don’t seem to be aware this is what they’re teaching? Like they’re buying into industry propaganda?
And the whole time it’s sold to you like you can be some trailblazer when the irony is they’re usually either prepping you for cubicle work or for some misguided high horse creative team pumping out design solutions completely divorced from the reality. I’m tired of all the talks about sustainability in a vacuum with no conversation about nuanced designs that factor in broader social and economic perspectives which lack thereof is leading to sustainable products being sold at a price only able to be afforded by wealthier people who are causing said economic and social problems and contributing to the rapid obsoletion of trades and crafts. Lecturers and speakers don’t seem to think that’s any of our concern and should just worry about producing the design for the hypothetical Bluetooth powered organic hairbrush or using the twigs to make the pattern for the £85 fabric square.
Like? Can I please make something that actually resonates with people outside the circle jerk of egotistical creatives and corporations? Something charming and maybe idk something that doesn’t make me want to tear my miserable portfolio in half with my teeth? And they’re like Mm nope sorry it has to be an extreme close up of a mark making abstract leaf you made from a recycled trash bag inspired by a stalled urban space which we will force you to price at £100 during your exhibition 5 people will bother to attend and no you’re not allowed any other style cos this isn’t the Dark Ages :///
I think the worst thing my lecturer ever said was, while looking around the room of our class work reduced down to a series of cubes and splatters and abstract typography, “Wow, I love how you can’t tell what anyone’s [main artist discipline] is!” Like awww conformity at the expense of a person’s individuality to make pieces for airport hallways and rich people’s living rooms wow so cool heehee like girl that’s not good?? Why on Earth are you complimenting us for that? Like I get it, I thought this course would boost skillset as an illustrator (as we were told), turns out the degree is really not for me, fair enough to anyone thinking that, but forcing students to produce modern abstract art because you think it’s the ONLY Logical Pathway for the future of design, judging them intensely for doing a different style, and thinking producing financially inaccessible art + design is the solution to things like climate change and community severance is an objectively bad take.

This pissed me off so much when I was younger that now it's flipped on its head to being funny because...
People to me when I was younger having gone, "You can't possibly know you want hormones! Don't you know anything?! You can't just make decisions! You don't know health, you can't diagnose yourself as being dysphoric and needing that!" quickly turned into my medical teams frequently saying, "oh I didn't know that," and even confiding in me that I was their first trans patient they ever saw, much less learned about. How the fuck are you expecting a medical professional to diagnose an issue they haven't even heard of. Trans people really are expected to have a PhD in Being Trans just for the chance to be listened to (without the pay that comes with that education!).

But Madam Qin explicitly did not want to doom Qin Su to the incest marriage. When she got the wedding invitation even after warning JGY she fainted dead away on the spot and died of depression shortly afterwards and could only bring herself to warn Bicao on her death bed.
I assume this is in response to my tags on this post about "plot holes" in MDZS, in which my exact words were "JGY and Madam Qin decided quietly dooming QS to the incest marriage was the best option." Deciding that something is the best option is not the same as wanting it. Deciding to amputate a gangrenous limb so the infection doesn't spread and kill me doesn't mean I want to chop my arm off, it means I've determined that this is the least-damaging option available to me.
I totally agree that Madam Qin did not want her daughter to marry her own half-brother, which is why I picked that option as the plot hole that is the hardest to give a Watsonian explanation for using the text alone. The other things listed on that poll don't impact the plot overmuch and can be explained based on other behavior we've seen from the characters and/or other expressly-stated events or aspects of the setting itself. Qin Su's pregnancy, however, is a fairly major plot point, and it being treated as something 100% inescapable where the only options are disgrace or a timely marriage, is contrary to what we know about this world and these characters. Madam Qin is not granted the privilege of having a character to begin with; all we know about her is that Jin Guangshan raped her, she kept this a secret, and that Jin Guangyao and Qin Su marrying despite her attempts to prevent it was so distressing to her that she died. Given that she so desperately wants her daughter to avoid being trapped in this marriage, but Qin Su is already pregnant, why is abortion not considered? There are possible explanations, but all of them require the reader to invent them wholecloth, because nothing we are told about her facilitates an explanation. Again, "doesn't want the incest marriage" is her primary personality trait. This is counter to that.
I do not feel it is reasonable to assume that abortifacients simply don't exist in the MDZS universe, because they exist--and have existed throughout history--in real life. They might not be safe, and they might not be effective, and they may be viewed as immoral depending on the cultural norms, but they exist. The MDZS world has magic. We see multiple characters casually walk off stab wounds even if they're of middling cultivation level. If Ancient Fantasy China's medical knowledge allows someone to successfully transplant Xiao Xingchen's entire eyes into Song Lan's head--a surgery that was only accomplished in the real world last year, with no vision in the transplanted eye--then surely abortion exists.
Meanwhile, Jin Guangyao would 100% know about abortion. He grew up in a brothel. Brothels sell sex. Sex sometimes causes unplanned pregnancy. Pregnancy for someone working in a brothel is generally a liability to be dealt with. There is no indication that we cannot apply these assumptions to the brothel in Yunping. Ergo, Jin Guangyao would know and should have at least considered it for Qin Su. There is no indication that he does.
Now--and I'm putting this in bold because this website can't read--that does not mean that there is no possible way for events to unfold as they did. There are many reasons why Madam Qin and Jin Guangyao would both disregard abortion as an option. If neither of them is willing to tell Qin Su the truth, they would need to give her drugs or treatment without her consent, and perhaps neither of them was willing to do that. Perhaps Jin Guangyao in his childhood witnessed self-induced abortions gone wrong and was unwilling to expose Qin Su to that risk, unconvinced that her social status would allow her access to better, safer care. Perhaps Madam Qin, struggling alone during her own unwanted pregnancy, had a bad experience of her own or was given bad information that convinced her abortion would be too dangerous. Maybe MDZS is like the Star Wars universe and is garbage at reproductive care specifically. Or something else entirely! The issue is that abortion is never considered within the text itself at all--not by the two parties in the know at the time, not by the peanut gallery listening to Bicao, and not by anybody interrogating Jin Guangyao at Guanyin Temple. And given how important the pregnancy is as a plot point, that's an issue!

My little cousin (almost 16 now 🥲) watched season 1 of the legend of korra. Here's her opinions of the characters.
Korra: "beefy mommy"
Mako: "he's like zuko but somehow even worse"
Bolin: "every show needs a comic relief, and bolin is doing a horrible job at it"
Asami: "say what you want but irl she would NOT be attracted to mako in the slightest that guy has pointy eyebrows"
Tenzin: "i was expecting Aang's son to have a better sense of humor"
The airbender kids: "BABIES."
Lin Beifong: "now that's my kind of woman"
Pema: "boring i'm sorry"
Tarrlock: "he's like a slimy salesman so perfect for politics"
Amon: "i was genuinely hoping he'd be some cool spirit villain but he was just a dude who did everything bc he's angry. What's with this universe's villains and them just being random dudes all the time"
Iroh II: "he's like zuko but cooler in every way" Me: "he's voiced by the same guy too" Her: "yea no shit that VA doesn't even try to alter his voice i could tell right away."
Avatar Aang: "not him showing up late starbucks in hand to give Korra the Avatar State AFTER the fight"

I think my most toxic trait as a Zenos enjoyer is wanting to 1v1 everyone who says that Zenos actively wants to kill his opponents
Like, completely disregarding that it is actively ignoring the text even in StB there (and that he consistently wants the WoL especially to live), he, uh, is written as having a desire for more the opposite to happen. Very, very consistently. His drive to live is solely linked to brief moments of pleasure-from-struggle and when that drops he explicitly wants to die so he can preserve the moment (and like. *looks at the end of 6.0* if he wanted to kill the WoL he would not be disappointed when they fall before the game allows it, nor would they have lived after given his will was strong enough to bring them back if they bite it). He wants struggle and lacks the ability to give enough of a shit to hold back if someone walks up and says they're going to go for his head.
Like, death is a side effect of what he's after, it's not the goal and he explicitly considers it a waste of life. Even fighting isn't the goal, the goal is to struggle, to need to put effort in. The WoL is just the only person to put him in that state as he currently is, hence his obsession.

[TAKE TWO. COZ THIS POSTED BEFORE I WAS DONE EDITING IT RHGHHHH]
But uh.
Okay :) Folds hands together :) Steamy thoughts with the Chainshipping ladies :)
Putting a cut, it centers around very passionate making out- so like. Nothing super explicit. But still lmao, just in case ^_^
[Gonna ramble a bit to set this up lol. So uh I was thinking about one morning with the two of them, before Lorraine has to leave for the day. She's all dressed, while Addie's still in sleepwear; she's never been a morning person, but still gets up to spend some time with Lorraine, and say goodbye and and all that. Then she'll go the fuck back to bed for at least another hour or two LMAO. But anyway they're in the doorway, and Lorraine says that she'd like to give Addie a little something before she goes. And Addie assumes this means the little 'thing' they've been doing, where just before they part ways, they'll take turns kissing each other's cheeks. So Addie happily closes her eyes, and turns her head to the side for her kiss. It's then that she feels fingers gently take hold of her chin, and tilt her head back towards Lor.]
"Oh, no, darling... You deserve more than that,"
That hand then trails down to Addie's shirt collar, and begins to pull her towards the closest wall. "Stand right there, and face me." Lorraine lightly commands, giving a gesture to the floor. While Addie's heart was already starting to beat out of her chest, she does as she's told with no hesitancy. Lorraine never exactly had to tell her twice when it came to these sorts of things, after all.
"Mm," Lorraine hums in approval. "Good girl,"
Those words alone sent a surge of arousing chills through Addie. It was her weakness, and of course, Lorraine knew it. Giving a satisfied smile at her work, she began to move in closer... And up until now, Addie never thought there could be seduction in something like hanging a cane on a nearby coat hook. But, like with countless things, it was Lorraine Gordon who could prove otherwise; acting with a slow, provocative sort of grace, before turning her attention back to her beloved, flustered darling.
Suddenly, she clutched two haphazard handfuls of Addie's t-shirt, and crashed her larger form against her, leaving absolutely no room between them. Addie, now utterly pinned, hardly had time to gasp before her lips have been captured in Lorraine's. Between the stiffening of Addie's body, and the tipping of her head, the difference of their heights are null as Lorraine continues her passionate barrage of kiss after kiss. It's not long before she's lost course, diverting from Addie's lips to her cheeks, nose, chin, neck... It hardly mattered to either of them, though, as they fell further and further into heavy, heated desire, hands wandering lower, and lower, until...
Lorraine has to fully pull away, her reddened face bearing a breathless, proud grin. Addie, on the other hand, has to keep her flushed, disheveled, lipstick-stained self from completely collapsing.
"H... Holy fuck," she breathes out. "P-please, Lorrie... More,"
But, as Addie begins to lean in, a finger is pressed to her lips.
"Tonight, dear." Lorraine smiles. "I'm afraid I have to leave now. But," she trails off, and lowers herself to Addie's ear. "Just consider this something for you to think about today. Okay...?"
Addie wants to object, as the warmth of Lorraine's body parts from hers. She wants to pull her back, wrap her arms around her, and let the time slip away from them. She wants the both of them to just go back to the bedroom, and continue there. She wants to see where arousal will take them this time. She nods, though, with a quick sigh. "Yeah, alright. Tonight, then."
With a pleased nod in return, Lorraine retrieves her cane, gives Addie's cheek one last peck, and the two say their goodbyes for now.
However, once alone, it doesn't take long at all for Addie to realize something. She's been left with a sort of gift, intentional or not. Because while the lipstick washed away, something else remained... The unmistakable smell of Lorraine's perfume, tortuously clung to her body.
...Fuck.
