Kitty huffs, a rare moment of agitation, and blows it out sharply. She thrusts her hands forward and hurls the string of pearls onto the couch. She curls her fingers in frustration and stares at them, like a puzzle. 

“My goddamn hands won’t stop shaking,” she utters. 

You cross the room to her, wordlessly, and take the necklace. You move behind her to clasp it in place over her collar. She wears a straight cut black dress with no ornament. The pearls are a delicate touch to the otherwise plain outfit. 

“What do you think he wants?” Adrienne finally asks the question none of you dared. 

You look at her helplessly. They can never know you did this. They can’t ever know that the reason they are so scared in that moment is your fault. They might have longed to pull the trigger themselves but actually doing it is different. It’s... irredeemable. 

“He said we’re under his protection,” you say flatly. 

“Oh, come on, you’re the most skeptical of all of us,” Kitty accuses, “you believe that. Daddy was just another soldier.” 

“Maybe but what else are we going to do but obey?” You counter. 

Kitty winces and Adrienne’s eyes bat. Your older sister shakes her head, “you’re not the one to give up.” 

“I am.” You insist. “If it keeps you two safe then I will do whatever needs to be done.” 

They’re silent for a moment as they look from you to each other. They nod. “Us too,” Kitty says. “We have to take care of each other.” 

“Like always,” Adrienne agrees. 

Silence floods the room again. There’s a car waiting outside a few minutes later. You march out in another sombre parade. It’s a different kind of funeral that day. You’re not mourning the past, you’re mourning the future and what could have been and will never be. 

You sit together in the back seat. You hold hands. You never went to many of these ‘business’ gatherings. Outside of a wedding, you weren’t invited. Your father was only invited by the few people who knew him in the outfit. He was only ever the big dog when he barked at his three daughters. 

The car stops, you get out. You squeeze your sisters’ hands before you detach. The man who drove leads you to the immaculate white facade of the grand hall. You’re somewhat confused by the venue but this is not a day for questions. You had your curiosity beat out of you long ago. 

Inside, you’re led to a set of open doors. You enter and another man stands to beckon you further inside. There are bodies all around, all in dark suits, muttering under their breath, coughing, tapping fingers. 

Your eyes skim around cautiously. Barnes sits at the head table. He’s calm and unbothered by the new arrival. He’s indifferent to his men as the one next to him whispers in his ear. Rogers stands behind the boss’ chair as he speaks to him, gripping the elaborate orb that tops the post of the straight-backed seat. 

Barnes’ gaze meets yours only as you and your sisters are put at a table of your own. It feels like some hearing. A court case. Are they hearing the crimes of your father? But he said... 

No questions. There’s nothing the answers can change for you. Adrienne fidgets, wringing her hands restlessly, and Kitty sit so straight it looks like it hurts. None of you look past the table. Your daddy would smack your mouth for your wandering eyes. 

“Alright, now that we’re all here, let’s gut through the bullshit,” Barnes’ voice brings the voice to deathly lull. The men shift their bodies and their focus. The doors close subtly behind the boss’ timbre. “Now, don’t think I brought you here because of a single soldier. You know better. All of you.” 

His voice is stringent but restrained. Still, it’s enough to instill fear. You gulp and dare to look up at him. He stands and puts his hands on the table. 

“First, a crooked accountant. Bald clown messing around. Then I got men going out, coming back short. Then dead.” He snarls. “I don’t care about the small men. With due respect,” he pauses and glances in your direction, “but I know they don’t think for themselves, too. I know it was one of you. This isn’t just chance. 

“One of you popped Warren ‘cause he found you out,” Barnes continues.  

You sense movement like a soft breeze. Rogers edges along the wall, unnoticed. You stare in slow motion as he moves quickly towards another table. 

“And I found you out too,” Barnes hits the table with his fist. “I went through the numbers and I found the fucking thief.” 

You frown. It’s... lies. He told you that day. At the funeral. Your daddy was the thief. Now he’s telling them something different. He used you. It makes a good story. A mysteriously dead soldier, missing money... makes it easy to trim the fat. 

“Milo,” Barnes points and a chair scrapes and teeters.  

Rogers grabs the capo from behind, closing his hands around his neck. He drags him easily, like a rag doll. They aren’t so different in size and yet the blond moves the other easily as he bulls around the table and brings the man to the center of the room. 

“You been pocketing my money.” Barnes stands straight and gestures casually. 

Rogers tosses the other man, Milo, to the floor and kicks him so he sprawls. His assault is methodical. He doesn’t let up. He stomps and batters the man into the polished wood. The noise of cracking bones and breaking cartilage itch in your ears. The accused hacks and chokes on spit and blood. 

Your sisters smother gasps and startled sobs. You’re only mortified by your own indifference. Are you so callous to feel nothing for a man chosen to pay for father’s death? For your actions? You just can’t. You know every man in this room is just like your father was. Cruel. Mean. They deserve it just as much as he did. 

“Enough,” Barnes orders and Rogers steps back, combing his long hair away from his face as he puffs. The man on the floor is a puddle of wheezes. 

“Your houses, your cars, your accounts, all of it, will be turned over to Warren’s daughters. For his good service to me. He died finding you out. He died for the good of the outfit. He smoked out the mole,” Barnes says. “And you orphaned his daughters, just like you meant to do to every man in this room.” 

Silence. Stillness. No one moves. 

“You are all dismissed. On your way out, you make sure to pay your disrespects to that scum,” Barnes growls. “And look at him, hard and long, because the next fucker I catch with his hands in my pockets will be right there with him.” 

There’s a moment before anyone moves. The first man to rise is greying around his temples. He comes out from behind the table and nears the shaking form on the floor. He spits on Milo then sends his pointed leather shoe into the man’s stomach. He marches out without looking back. 

The next man follows suit. Spit, kick, go. One after another the men disburse in the same manner. The noises, ptuah, crack, tap, tap, tap, form a sickly rhythm. You can only sit and watch. 

You reach to your sisters and take their hands again. You glance between them. They look on in horror. They aren’t made for this. Your eyes flit back to the head table and find the king looking over his court. No, he’s looking at you. 

Barnes dips his chin and his eyes gleam. He is the master. No one dares to challenge the narrative he’s written. Whatever he says is all the truth they need to worry about. Same goes for you.

Which social media would Sherlock Holmes characters have, according to a discussion I had with my friends in the middle of a night a couple days ago. This is ACD Holmes I think but leaning onto Soviet movies somewhat.

(And yes I'm aware telegram isn't popular outside of russian-speaking internet but just let it be part of the joke i guess)

Holmes: a lot of fake accounts on every website ever, but the only place that he actually posts on for himself is his telegram channel about tobacco varieties that has almost no followers. When Watson learned that Holmes has telegram, he was pissed because he thought Holmes is there to buy drugs.

Watson: he's a really popular ao3 writer. Also has a tumblr blog and an insta where he posts pictures of food, pictures of Holmes and sometimes his drawings (which he photographs with a lot of random stuff in the background for "aesthetics"). He also created a number of "official" Sherlock Holmes accounts without telling Holmes and makes all the posts there himself.

Mrs Hudson: facebook, where she posts recipes, household advices and stuff like that, and occasionally grumbles about Holmes and Watson. Also whenever they do something that really pisses her off, she would list the flat for rent, but always take it down shortly.

Moriarty: tumblr where he mostly posts about maths and a personal website to advertise as a private math tutor. Also a private telegram channel that Holmes somehow managed to follow from a fake acc.

Lestrade: EVERY social media ever. Most notably, twitter, where he always gets in fights (especially with Holmes's fake accs). He also set up an official Scotland Yard tiktok where he just makes really bad edits of policemen just walking somewhere with some music and lots of filters on.

Irene Adler: Instagram. Also onlyfans where she posts really rarely and she's always fully clothed, but she still has like thousands on thousands of followers there.

Mycroft: an official twitter that he hired someone to manage. Also facebook.

Mary Morstan: She doesn't actually exist, it's just one of Holmes's fake Instagram accs where he posted pictures of "Watson's wedding" to escape rumours.

Sir Henry Baskerville: onlyfans with only one subscriber whose username is infusoria666. Everyone but sir Henry himself knows it's Dr. Mortimer. Also Dr. Mortimer tried to set up a travel blog for him but ended up having to post there by himself.

Dr. Mortimer: tumblr blog full of skulls and also a youtube channel. He's also one of the few people who follow Holmes's tobacco telegram, and probably its biggest fan. When they met, he mentioned his youtube channel a lot, hoping that Holmes will ask for a link, but he just ignored even the most obvious hints.

Moriarty writes immaculately with all the capital letters and punctuation and periods in the end of every sentence. Holmes does the same but with no capital letters.

Tim and Tam had a nice Saturday. 

The day that was started by nothing but bullshit from the Wayne family and was remedied by Tamara’s good redirection using alcohol is amazing. They may or may not have black outs around 9 in the evening and he doesn’t want to remember the shit Tam put him through.

But fate is a bitch and he wakes up in Tam’s living room, on her soft grey carpet and is now trending throughout the social media of Gotham. Is he aware of anything that could possibly result in the entirety of Upper Gotham to suddenly bombarded him with proposals of courtship? No. Is he enthralled by this sudden development? No. Did he want the ground to suddenly open up and swallow him and spew him out in Hokkaido? Yes! 

This sudden development was actually not a bad thing as he looked at Twitter and saw many screen-recorded shit he and Tam did. And lo and behold, it was from Instagram Live, not just anyone’s  Instagram Live but it was Tim’s Instagram Live. 

Sure, Tim’s Instagram is far less known than the public accounts of Richie Wayne and Brucie Wayne, with almost all of the population of Gotham and some of the neighbouring cities, but he has some good amount of followers to be famous but not a big time influencer. However, as any model that has been featured on some top magazines in Japan, he has enough influence to navigate the fashion industry, just like the bear jacket and the wedge high heels that he loves to wear everyday in Japan.

But then again, it was mostly just in Japan, Asia is already pushing it. So, he doesn’t really kind off get it how did the Americans found his Instagram Account, after all his username is not even close to Timothy Drake, it was akatori, directly translated to Red Bird and if the Gothamite actually have some brain cells to think, it was a direct hint that he was once the Red Bird, Red Robin, to be exact. 

But Timothy is not an idiot. Red Bird can have a lot of meaning. Like the tattoo that he got when he settled in Hokkaido, or it could be the emblem of once prestigious Drakes. Red Bird has a lot of meaning in Tim’s life and all of them hurt to different degrees.

Now, back to the trending page of Twitter. All of the clips of the live show were just him singing different songs. He doesn’t remember singing and he also doesn’t remember putting on a live show, heck he doesn’t even remember anything after the second bottle of tequila was down. 

He looked at the tags and he was trending under the tag of #tim_drake_live. He clicked on the first video that the tag has and it was him singing so passionately of Walls Could Talk by Halsey and Tam was beside him singing the oh-oh-oh part and it was hilarious. It was like he knew so many things that he could not say to the public and he was now suffering from it. Timothy chuckled at his thought but then halted as it was true to his life.

“Imagine the amount of tea this man could spill.”

“A nepo baby that decides to leave everything for peace? Spill the tea.”

He clicked another video and it was him singing to Tate McRae’s “you broke me first”. It was truly a song that can describe his emotions but he doesn’t expect himself to call out Richard’s name after the line of ‘Now suddenly you're asking for it back Could you tell me, where'd you get the nerve?’ Like where in the bloody soup of Kardashian’s list of lawsuits he got the confidence to call out Richie Wayne so boldly. Or could it be that he was just drunk?

“Wonder what did the bimbo Richie do to him?”

“THAT IS WHAT WE LOVE. NAME DROPPING”

“Imagine having the power to call Richard Wayne out for all of his bullshit, the power Tim Drake has is immaculate”

He clicked to several more videos of him just singing to different more songs but the one that captured his focus was the rendition of CARYS “Princesses Don’t Cry” and but his confident drunk ass change the princess to a Drake and he can see the sliver of tears sliding to his face and he knows why because he can still feel the light ache in his heart.

He looked at the comments and he was shocked to see people sympathising with him. He is not used to this, he was the one that always sympathises and not the other way around. And somehow, the sympathising of thousands of faceless people behind the screen made him feel so… valid. That he was heard and people actually listened to him and believed him. Something inside of him felt touched and was healed.

“The fact that he change the princess to drake is a power move, ngl”

“Didn’t the media say that he didn’t cry during his parent’s funeral, was it the drake’s fault or the wayne’s?”

“He also move away from gotham for seven years and he come back for his sister’s wedding, watta brother”

“Is it just me or did he cry during the bridge? I swear i saw tears”

“The voice kind off shakes throughout the whole song, unlike the prev songs”

“Could it be that the whole song applied throughout his life? He was a part of upper gotham after all”

He didn’t expect that other people that he doesn’t know, actually sides with him. He was believed for once and for all. He was not judged as a crazed lunatic that was looking for attention, that he was grieving or just lost in his emotions. He didn't need to explain his reasons, but then he was understood. 

He sighed and put his phone down and took a deep breath. He got up from the carpet and he freshened himself before he went to Tam that was dead asleep on her couch and somehow didn’t wake up with all the shit he played on his phone.

“Tam! Wake up!” Tim yelled at the girl but Tam just groaned and mumbled, “go fuck yourself.” and Tim just chuckled and let the young lady be. He went to the kitchen and gathered anything that he could make him a breakfast and maybe Tam if he felt like it.

He made himself a guacamole sandwich and made Tam one, because he doesn’t want to get hit and as he was eating, he decided to go live one more time to apologise to his behaviour the night prior. He clicked the live button and he smiled at the camera.

“Hey everyone. I am pretty sure that everyone that is here, saw what happened last night.” He awkwardly chuckled by himself. “I am pretty much black-out drunk and can’t remember what happened last night and if there are no clips circling throughout the internet, I would never know what I did.” 

“I am apologising for such display of behaviour and hopefully wouldn’t do it again in the future. But we will never know, maybe I got betrayed and chastised again and need to drink so much again.” He joked and the comments are egging him on making more drunk live karaoke nights, as it made them realise that they are not the only ones that are sad during holidays.

“‘Don’t apologise, we like the chaotic tim drake’ wah? Really? Was I really that entertaining?” Tim chuckled at the comment before addressing something more, “And please call me Timothy, Tim is for little me, Timothy sounds more elegant.”

““Who bets that Timothy preferred to call himself Tim before he left?’ Pretty sharp, huh? But no, my parents always called me Timothy with so much affection and I couldn’t listen to people calling me Timothy, as it brings me grief but now, I like it.”

““Didn’t your parents leave you by yourself?” Yes, that is true. But it was actually a series of trial and error. My parents brought me to a few of their digs and we found out the hard way that I should not be in dig sites.” Timothy chuckled as he remembered that Tim was brought in one of the dig sites at Peru and was found tampering with a very important relic and his parents just hired a nanny until Tim was ten. And Mrs. Mac became his guardian during those days until Janet died.

“ “And you just don't think that you are neglected?” Oh no. I may be a neglected child in front of the outside eyes but my parents always call me everyday if the service can reach them and once a week if the service can’t. We also do family bonding everytime they come home, we go golfing, rock climbing, fishing with dad, baking with mum and learning ancient texts with both of them.” Tim commented, hoping that it will finally remove any bad cloud in his parent’s reputation.

“My dad and mum may not be ideal parents for anyone but for me, I love my independence of cooking what I eat, cleaning my own room, doing my homework on my own and establishing some routine and schedule with no interference from my parents is actually really cool. My mum actually tried to bring up the idea of going with them one more time to a dig site so that she can watch over me everytime, not just when she comes home, but I knelt down and cried for 3 hours to just let me be and my mum just let it go. It stopped when she died.” He bitterly smiled at the attempts of his mother trying to include him at their dig and he always cried as he didn't want to stop his nightly escapades.

Before he can comment any further, Tam shows up behind him, clearly still has a hangover and just woken up, “Why does my phone have thousands of notifications?” 

TIm smiled as he pointed his phone to Tam, “Say hello to the live, Tam.” Tim chuckled and Tam paused as if she was processing what just Tim and hit Tim when everything finally set in. “I fucking hate you.” Tam cursed him as she went to the bathroom.

“There is a guacamole sandwich on the counter for you.” Tim yelled but Tam just popped her hand out and raised her middle finger, making Tim laugh. Tim looked back at the fast scrolling of comments until he saw a very interesting comment.

“ “Are you going to get back together?” Me and Tam? The chance of that happening is like the chance of Lex Luthor stopping antagonising Superman. And Tam has her own endeavour right now. She can’t court a certain baldie that has a penchant for breaking their nose.” Tim laughed at his own joke but  screamed when a cold pair of wet hands just suddenly wiped his face.

“I heard you were talking shit about me.” Tam said, quoting  a meme, making the comments send a bunch of laughing stickers and making Tim laugh after a while. Tam grabbed her sandwich and sat beside Tim, she bit into the sandwich as she asked, “So why are you livestreaming your morning? Is this a hobby of yours?”

Tim shook his hand, even Tam doesn’t remember what they did last night, “Apparently I livestream the two of us singing while drunk, and now everyone wants to know who the heck I am.” Tim briefly explained, and Tam choked a little, before giggling. 

“I knew you were going to have so much clout someday, and that is why I stuck around.” Tam laughed and Tim joined in. “What did you sing while drunk?” Tam asked as she took another bite of her sandwich. 

“I have so many songs that I sang. Apparently the live show was streaming for three hours, and I definitely sang for at least three hours. It is a miracle that I haven’t lost my voice.” Tim told Tam and Tam shot her eyebrows up.

“Damn, man. I know you are kind of indestructible but damn.” Tam said before she looked at the camera and added, “I mean in any way shape or form.” she winked.

Tim rolled his eyes, “So, yeah. The Waynes probably want to know where I am and I need to go back, I still need to prepare for my sister’s wedding. Thank you everyone, and again I am very sorry for my actions last night.” Tim said as he waved to the camera before ending the live.

Tim sighed, “I am very shocked that none of the Waynes are actually trying to break into your house.”

Tam laughed, “I may or may have not done something about that.” she cryptically said. 

Tim widened his eyes, “What did you do?”

Tam grinned, “When I got the news that you filed for your resignation letter, and even the Waynes don't have any clue where you are, they went through with everything that happened after you left to travel the world. But I stepped my foot down when they were trying to break into my house and my office trying to figure out where you are after I got your new number.”

“And they listened to you?” Tim is in disbelief, the Bats listened to someone who established boundaries? That’s news to him.

“Apparently threatening them with you is very effective, since it was kind of fairly recent that you went off the face of earth.”

“Wonder how that works.” Tim murmured, probably guilt and conscience. But Tam heard him and just winked at him.

I wanted to start off with saying that I'm a casual reader of your posts here. I oftern go into lurker mode cause I'm an Uber wallflower that's sometimes too nervous to comment lol ^^'

Your recent fic with OB!Riddle was so good. The suspense was immaculate, the horror sublime; I felt like I was reading a love child of Through the Looking Glass meshed with Coraline(but minus the button eyes).

You blew my brain out of the park with that one! It's a perfect fic to kick off the Month of Scares!

(Sorrry if my praises are too much. I'm not good with words sometimes ;-; )

:O !!!!! a "love child of Through the Looking Glass and Coraline" omg!!! AND THE HORROR IS SUBLIME?!?!?! WAAAAAA this is too sweet!!! Actually,, as I was finishing it I was so overcome with the nostalgia of my 2022 writing style that I didn't even realize it had those vibes!! It was wonderful to return to a twst work that had the 2022 merakiui flair. Looking at it with 2024 eyes, all I could think was: Riddle is having his Silly Billy (fnf) moment. hehe but I'm very happy it feels like those works!!! They're both so good,,, orz

Days of Yore

Warnings: some dark elements. Not all kinks or triggers are tagged. My username actually says you never asked for any of this.

Summary: You show up uninvited but are welcomed nonetheless.

Character: Geralt of Rivia

Day Twenty-Five of the December Daze Challenge.

Prompt -an unexpected guest at the holiday get together.

Note: As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging.

“Wow,” you gape up at the immaculate array of lights strung across the facade. “This place is amazing. Who’s house is this?” 

“A friend of a friend’s, I don’t know,” Wendy shrugs. 

“A friend... Oh? Are you sure it’s okay we’re here?” You wonder with a furrow between your brows. You now feel a bit foolish for getting all done up when you might not even have been invited. 

“Open invite! Besides, no one will notice,” she assures you. 

“Right,” you mutter doubtfully. 

“Loosen up. What else do you got going on, huh?” She grabs your hand and pulls you through the open iron gates. They accentuate the medieval effect of the house. Now you don’t feel done up enough. 

“Not much, I guess,” you admit. If anything, you’ll get a bit of free food then ditch. It's not the first time you’ve unintentionally party-crashed with your wayward friend. 

“You know Sienna, it will be fine,” she tuts and comes up to the front doors.  

Again, you’re awed by the aesthetic of it all. You notice that the lights aren’t coloured, but only white, and the decor doesn’t bear the typical Santa or candy cane theme. In fact, it all has a historic tint. Traditional in a strange way. Dried oranges hung on long strings and holly twisted into bunches. For a moment, you’re remind of that dusty history degree hidden in the back of your closet. 

Wendy knocks with the heavy iron knocker. She waits and chatters as she wiggles her legs below her short skirt. She didn’t dress for the temperature. She searches the door frame and grumbles. 

“You think someone who could afford this place would have a doorcam or something,” she chuffs out a cloud of steam. 

The door opens and startles you both. You look over as Wendy as good as jumps inside. She seizes the woman who keeps a hand on the door. 

“Kami! You look... nice,” she holds her and gives her an eye up and down, “is this velvet?” She drags her hands down the green fabric. 

“Designer,” Kami pushes away her touch. “You brought a friend.” 

“Yeah, Sienna said so--” 

“Mm, sure, it’s just... whatever. No one will notice,” Kami rolls her eyes. “You have to come. Lucas has the funniest story! I was just dying.” 

Your shoulders fall and you clasp your hands together. You trail after, unwelcome and unacknowledged. Uninvited. You frown and silently configure how you can excuse yourself and leave. If you wait long enough, Wendy will forget about you. It might be easier to sneak out. 

You stop to hang your coat with all the rest and Kami makes a point of telling you to take your boots off. The floors are old wood, polished and well-kept. The entire house is immaculate. An antique on its own. 

You follow them into a high-ceilinged room adorned in strings of threaded popcorn and dried clusters of flowers. The air is fragrant as mulled cider steams in a heated bowl on a table, copper cups waiting to be filled, and dishes of appetizers in a line. The smell makes your stomach churn hungrily. 

“Who the hell owns this place?” Wendy asks the question nibbling on your ears. 

“Oh, he’s a funny guy,” Kami chuckles. “A bit... eccentric. Sienna’s been trying to loosen him up a bit, I mean... look at this house. That’s a good bag.” 

You try not to show your disapproval. You don’t have much luck with men but hearing the way some of your friends talk about them, you don’t know that you’re cut out for it all. It really doesn’t seem that anyone is out for a genuine connection, they just want a good set-up.

Can you really blame them? You’ve been handwashing your clothes since your building hiked up the machine prices. Turns out a couple quarters can really break the bank. 

Your guilt compounds as you realise that you’ve cosigned this entire extortionate affair. This party seems to have been a ploy by a hopeful prize winner. You know Sienna and she’s always sure to show you her Fenti and point out the label, though she can never remember the name of the man who bought it. 

“So what? He gave her full run to do all this? It's not really her... style. I expected more pink,” Wendy scoffs. 

“Nope, he’s a tight ass apparently. They were up for nights making the decorations and the food.” 

“What?” She squeals in surprises as your whispers from your mouth. That’s a lot of work. 

“Very old-fashioned,” Kami remarks. “But he’s not just rich you know, he’s fucking hot.” 

“Ah, jackpot,” Wendy giggles. 

You keep behind them, as good as hiding behind them. You bob and clutch your purse as Lucas excitedly hugs Wendy and Sienna drunkenly echoes him. You know a few of the partygoers standing with them but none of them even look in your direction. It seems Wendy’s already forgotten you. 

This is why you said no at first. This is how it always goes but she begged and begged, guilting you fro making her show up alone. What about you? Why is it okay to ditch you every time? 

You glance around. There are just as many strangers and none of them seem eager to mingle past their trio or pairing. You wish Wendy mentioned the dress code. You don’t think your H&M clearance rack attire is very suiting. 

As an elbow hits your arm, you back up. No apology. You’re a piece of decor to these people. You back up and turn. Well, no one else seems to want to indulge. What a weird party. 

You go to the table and take a cup. It’s times like these that you enjoy being invisible. College was tough, you longed to be noticed, to be like the other girls. Since then, you’ve grown comfortable with just being there. It’s much safer. 

You ladle the cider into a mug and the steam roils from the top. A slice of blood orange and a few cranberries float in the rich amber liquid. You blow over it and retreat. The warmth is a comfort. It makes you feel a little less out-of-place. 

As you turn, you nearly collide with another. You bring your other hand up to steady the cup and barely keep from sloshing the cider all over. You squeak and step back on your heel, your eyes skimming up the large figure in front of you.  

You haven’t seen eyes like those since... 

“Geralt?” You utter dumbly. 

He looks down at you. He looks different but not. He always had his own vibe. The white hair, the bright eyes, he wore his individuality without meaning too. Yet some things are his own doing. 

When you were in Early Modern History or Medieval Weaponry and Warfare together, he always dressed as if the clocks were set back to the Victorian era. Stiff jackets, high collared shirts, even a pocket watch. He was a bit of a dweeb then but too big for anyone to say so. And he was the only person who wanted to talk about history outside the lectures. 

Now he wears a tunic, silver trim on black, slightly less stuffy but just as dated. Half of his hair is twisted back behind his head, the tails of it spilling past his shoulders. 

He says your name and tilts his head, “I didn’t invite you.” 

It’s a statement that makes your heart sink. You peer down at your cup then around the room. “I’m sorry, my friend, she knows Sienna, she--” 

“It’s good to see you,” he interrupts. “It’s been a very long time.” 

You wince and dare to look at him again. “Yes, college was a while ago.” You slanted your lips and press your hands to the hot metal cup. “This is your house? It’s very nice.” 

“It is. I don’t often entertain, so mind the cobwebs,” he intones. He still has that way of speaking; so matter-of-fact. “It wasn’t my idea.” 

“Mm, right,” you nod. 

“Is the cider good? I found the recipe in an old journal from 1764.” 

“Of course you did,” you hold back a laugh. 

“Of course...” he begins to repeat curiously. 

“It’s all very you, is all,” you say. 

“I suppose,” he agrees. 

You smile shakily and swallow. You make yourself try the cider. It’s hot but not scalding. A very spiced. Not in a bad way, you just don’t expect that much. 

“Mm, it’s... heady.” 

“Mulled for days,” he explains. He shifts on his feet and smooths his tunic. “Can I show you something?” 

“Um, sure,” you accept. “It’s not the door, is it?” 

He lets out a small snort, “leave the cider.” 

You peer around and he takes the cup from you. He puts it down on a leather coaster on a tall wooden table and beckons you after him. You peek back as you sense a hush and notice that Sienna and the rest of them are watching. Great, they already don’t care much for you. 

Geralt stops and waits for you to catch up to him. The staircase is wide enough for both of you. Your ascent is quiet, almost torturously so. 

“You did not bring a boyfriend?” He asks. 

You nearly laugh at the abrupt question. You get to the top of the stairs and he gestures you left. 

“Well, I’d bring my cat. He’s the only guy sleeping in my bed,” you kid. 

He hums but doesn’t comment. 

“So, how’d you meet Sienna?” You ask. 

He shrugs and stops to open a door. He pushes it inward and reaches around the frame to turn on the lights. He waits for you to enter first. You do with a gasp at the interior. 

The walls are hung with various weaponry and you can tell at a glance that it’s genuine. It’s like walking into a museum. You traipse forward as you stare and barely notice the door click shut. 

“Wow, how—Geralt, how the heck—what do you do? I mean, how can you afford all this?” 

“I make replicas for TV and stage productions,” he explains. “This is my personal collection.” 

“It’s... wow,” you hug yourself, feeling even smaller than before. 

He’s quiet again. That’s just how he’s always been. He never said more than he needed to. It made studying very easy. 

“You asked about Sienna. She is persistent but we are older now. I don’t see her as viable,” he says. Again, just a fact, nothing emotional. 

“Oh, uh, well, I heard otherwise. Maybe you should tell her that,” you chuckle nervously as you admire the executioner’s sword with its blunt tip. 

“Perhaps,” he agrees as he slowly crosses the room to stand next to you. “I’m... pleased that you showed up. It is a coincidence, isn’t it?” 

“Sure, must be,” you agree. 

You keep your eyes on the groove in the blade as you feel his on you. You sidle along and turn your head away from him. The door is shut. He stays close. 

“Here,” he steps around you, startling you. 

You spin as he goes to a large wooden chest on a table. “The smaller things are in here. Thumb screws, some daggers...” he flips open the lid as you turn and follow, keeping your distance. He holds up a curved blade, possibly a jambiya. “Hm, come,” he waves you around as he reaches in again, “you’ll like this one.” 

You sway before you move, hands clasped to each other. You slowly pace around to him and he moves so quickly you nearly stagger. In a moment, there’s a weight around your wrists. You cry out and raise your manacled arms. 

“Geralt!” You exclaim. 

He laughs. You don’t hear that often. You look at him and tug on the chain. 

“Centuries old but they are strong still, yes?” 

You frown, “please, it’s not funny. I don’t like it.” 

“Aren’t they wonderful?” 

“No, Geralt, please, take them off.” 

“Hm, I’d have to find the key...” 

“Don’t play,” you warn. 

His laughter trickles off and his face returns to its stoic mask. He stares at you. Silence rises and roils around you as the chain clinks in the loops of the cuffs and you fidget. You wait for him to pull out the key and undo them. 

Instead, he hooks a thick finger around the links and tugs until your arms are above you. He holds you like that, trapped and prone. You shudder as you stare up at him, terrified at the glint in his pale eyes. 

“I’m not playing,” he intones. “I’ve been waiting to get you in those. Far too long.”
