who would be the WORST case scenario for turning maverick? like. the one that would just make everyone throw their hands up in the air and go 'well, that's that. we're done here. not much of anything we can do now.'

"Well out of the people I know..." this is a little awkward to answer, but Xanti is nothing if not helpful. "...MZ.... doesn't really count since he's already.... kinda like that." Really they're just fortunate he's too apathetic to cause problems on purpose. Usually. "...but he'd be high on the list, um. Those nanites can do a lot of damage."

He's really working through the question as he speaks, and you're the one he's got to bounce ideas off of. "So not counting him, I guess... Er, I don't know I've never really thought about it before... hmm... it'd have to be...." X trails off, apparently being stricken with a sudden realization.

"Verse, oh my god it's Verse. Wow okay, thanks for that new nightmare! I'm gonna try hard never to think about this scenario again."

"You can't--!" Vi catches himself, voice lowering. "...you can't be serious." Not disbelief, entirely, no. Anyone would have needed help to pull that off. Even me. "That is one hell of a conclusion to come to, sir..." but the logic is sound.

The whole situation had felt fishy from the start, especially with the insistence there be little to no Maverick Hunter presence. "...well shit boss, we can't exactly make these accusations public. What the hell are we supposed to do?" Hardly had time to sit, and already the idea is getting under his skin.

"Great. GREAT. Just what we need! Evil undead alternates and political subterfuge! Sure! Why not." Vile grimaces momentarily as Xanti finishes replacing a fried cable-- didn't hurt until it was fixed. "Fucking hell... we're the only people in that room that aren't suspects."

Finally, the brunet speaks up as he discards the burned out wiring from Vi's limb. "Everyone in that room would have the resources to arm him, sure." That was a no brainer. There was enough money and political will to get one rogue machine some ride armor and new weapons.

"...and there's two ways this could have happened. Someone gave him information beforehand," which could have been anyone. "It'd be a lot riskier to do it that way... since the plans could have been delayed or changed last minute." Then there's option two: "...oooor someone was feeding him live info. Only one of the reploids in the room could do that, or anyone who stepped away temporarily." Security, and personal aids who cycled quietly in and out.

"...but if he's really a Maverick, then his presence already gives half the game away." There's almost no possibility that this guy was working with humans, right? "That still leaves us a few names, but it's a start." That still doesn't answer who the target was supposed to be.

"Zain," you know him better than anyone else. "What does your gut tell you? Do you think he was supposed to be an assassin? Kidnapper? Or was this stunt of his meant to fail?" Just an act to put everyone on edge-- to get fingers pointing? Did someone really think he'd succeed with Zero literally in the room?

Even if the outburst hadn't been intended, every word was true. Still, he shouldn't have snapped, if his subordinate's expression was anything to go by. Zain's sigh puffs his bangs out and away from his face, hands with nothing better to do fidgeting with torn threads on his slacks.

His anger had performed as intended-- briefly distracting him from his surroundings-- but just as quickly subsided to the discomfort of the quiet rhythmic beep of Xanti's monitors. It's cold. I feel cold. Even after he's given permission to escape, the gentle smile from his boyfriend and the seemingly conclusive end to their conversation, the blond grimaces.

Hesitation permeates every movement, but he still needs to speak. If nothing, for those who shared the same cursed knowledge as him. "...No. There's more." Even as he fiddles with the Maverick's files, there is a growing pit in his core. "Even if I don't know how he got here, it doesn't explain where his mech came from."

Vile didn't have access to the same resources as his Hunter counterpart had, "...and I know he wasn't aware of what Xanti looked like until today. He was there for someone else." While goading Zain wasn't too off target, what had happened was certainly not gone to plan-- if the anger they'd received was anything.

"He shouldn't have known the exact coordinates of the Conference's room, or when to show up when the security was lighter."

Too many loose ends. "Someone in that hall had to have been feeding him information."

Being Best Friends with Saeclus Sanguine

Autumn; for he was born in it, and he lives there. The scenery and the colors. The chilly air and the rain. The beauty in nature's struggle for survival, and the bitter taste of it's defeat each time.

Hugs; sweet and strong. For he holds not too tightly and not too lightly. And in his arms, it's safe. Free from all the troubles in the world are the moments spent in his embrace. And for a short while, the world is at peace. It's calm. And it's nice.

Philosophy; and he knows it by heart. The soul of an artist in the body of a warrior, he has read it all, and in due time, just listening to him speak of it, will make anyone fall in love. Abstract ideas and discussions. Morality and it's struggles. Questions of existence. He simply has too much to say.

Words of encouragement; he always has a way with them. For he has felt helplessness, and he has felt pain. And he feels deeply when he does. For he knows that you wish to hear them, even if you deny it. And he knows hope is what keeps us all going. He knows, even when it seems he doesn't.

Firm grip; the kind that lets you know he will never let go. The kind that speaks an unspoken message; that he will be there, supporting you and cheering you on with a smile, even if everyone else chooses to leave. The kind that gives courage and warmth.

Historical buildings; and he knows the story behind each and every one of them. From the ruins at the edge of Rotigenberg to the abandoned manors by the Black Mountains. Remember he is old, some dare say ancient. He's been there when the castles fell, and the lands became abandoned. And he was there when new ones were built and rose up from the ground.

Books; for literature has always been a passion to him. Novels he's read plenty, and has never gotten enough of. Some he's even written himself, though in secret. And poetry, which he simply adores. Romance, history, philosophy, and the list goes on. He's read so much, and said so little.

Content Analysis:

There are a two things that stuck with me the most while watching AVPS for the umpteenth time that I could not stop thinking about:

     1. each character portrayed in the show shows off each actor’s comedic strengths perfectly, and

     2. despite not every single creative team member having a musical theatre specific formal education, growing up in and around musical theatre made the team more aware of the intrinsic musical theatre characteristics and formulas that aid a work like this in its success.

The first point should be somewhat obvious to those who have watched the show and are fans of the original source content, both book and movie universes. I cannot sing the praises of Lauren Lopez and Joey Richter’s comedic timing enough! I have no words for how incredible their performances are. Darren Criss’ performance is charming as always. Joe Walker as Umbridge is absolutely hilarious - StarKid’s comfortability with performing in drag is something I really admire that not a lot of productions can successfully pull off. I’d like to give a special nod to Tyler Brunsman as Lucius Malfoy who honored Lopez’s physicality as Draco perfectly while still making the overdramatic poses and gestures a trait that is the character’s own. Overall, 10/10 love the performances.

Now for the music. Darren Criss has an extensive background in musical theatre and theatre in general, so it isn’t surprising that he was able to make music that worked so well for a musical that he helped create. However, there are certain things about musical theatre that a person can’t learn via formal education and experience in professional settings. A lot of musical theatre (I’d say all of it, but that wouldn’t be giving professionals enough credit) is simply trial and error. While the loose idea of book-and-lyric/dialogue, song, and dance musical theatre has existed for over one hundred and fifty years (historians often attribute the first musical to The Black Crook which debuted in New York City in 1866), the modern-day formula for musical theatre was perfected, though by all means not invented, by Rodgers and Hammerstein in the 1940s with Oklahoma! They are often credited for creating the traditional musical theatre plot formula and song types that were used almost exclusively in the Golden Age of musical theatre in the 1950s, and are still commonly seen today, even with more experimental and non-traditional pieces.

Like how the Hero’s Journey in literature is so commonly used and reused over and over in different mediums and genres, even in theatre, there are certain types of songs that are traditionally used for servicing a musical’s plot and character development. A classic example of this would be the “I Want” song, such as ‘The Wizard and I’ from Wicked or ‘Something’s Coming’ in West Side Story. In A Very Potter Sequel, the “I Want” song is ‘To Have A Home’. Another common song trope in large cast musicals with one specific lead is something I like to call the “Hero’s Welcome” song, though I’m not sure if that phrase is the proper term for what I’m talking about. An example of this type of song is ‘My Shot’ from Hamilton or, in this case, ‘Harry Freakin’ Potter’. A personal favorite of mine is the “Jilted Lovers” song, like ‘Take Back Your Mink’ from Guys and Dolls and ‘Stutter’, from this show.

Anyone who is familiar with musicals, and particularly musical comedies, would recognize these kinds of songs and the roles that they serve in their specific productions, but the reason why it’s so hard to write successful musicals is because not every song a person writes for a specific part of a show fits the rights tone or follows the more traditional type of song seen in previous musicals that follow a similar plot structure of character introduction, conflict introduction, rising action, climax, and resolution (with a happy ending for a musical comedy). Yet Darren Criss, who was in his early twenties at the time, executes it so very well.

Even in the character performances, actors use very specific gestures and intonations when delivering a line or performing an action that the audience immediately knows the intentions of, because that delivery is so commonly used in whatever instance is being performed. One that immediately comes to mind is the scene in which Umbridge discusses the dorm rules with the girls. While explaining the cruel and unfair treatment the world gives for girls who aren’t as pretty and perfect as Cho Chang, Umbridge says,

“Because that’s just the way the world works for frumpy little turds like us! I mean…

*Umbridge stiffens with realization, then turns her neck in a very jilted fashion towards the girls*

Like you”

It’s the neck action that does it for me. I don’t know how or when that performative gesture became a physical symbol indicative of aggressive mental instability, but the media consumer inside of me knows that gesture is what is meant to be done at that moment in time to convey the threat Umbridge represents. And that’s what makes the comedy of StarKid, and the comedy in this production work so well for me. The cast and creative team just get what it means to perform something for an audience, and particularly an audience of fans. And it’s definitely because the cast and creative team are such adamant fans themselves.

This Book is called Ecclesiastes, or the preacher, (in Hebrew, Coheleth) because in it Solomon, as an excellent preacher, setteth forth the vanity of the things of this world, to withdraw the hearts and affections of men from such empty toys. Ch. --- Coheleth is a feminine noun, to indicate the elegance of the discourse. It is very difficult to discriminate the objections of free-thinkers from the real sentiments of the author. It is most generally supposed that Solomon wrote this after his repentance; but this is very uncertain. S. The vanity of all temporal things.

[1] The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Jerusalem.

Verba Ecclesiastae, filii David, regis Jerusalem.

[2] Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes vanity of vanities, and all is vanity.

Vanitas vanitatum, dixit Ecclesiastes; vanitas vanitatum, et omnia vanitas.

[3] What hath a man more of all his labour, that he taketh under the sun?

Quid habet amplius homo de universo labore suo quo laborat sub sole?

[4] One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever.

Generatio praeterit, et generatio advenit; terra autem in aeternum stat.

[5] The sun riseth, and goeth down, and returneth to his place: and there rising again,

Oritur sol et occidit, et ad locum suum revertitur; ibique renascens,

[6] Maketh his round by the south, and turneth again to the north: the spirit goeth forward surveying all places round about, and returneth to his circuits.

gyrat per meridiem, et flectitur ad aquilonem. Lustrans universa in circuitu pergit spiritus, et in circulos suos revertitur.

[7] All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come, they return, to flow again.

Omnia flumina intrant in mare, et mare non redundat; ad locum unde exeunt flumina revertuntur ut iterum fluant.

[8] All things are hard: man cannot explain them by word. The eye is not filled with seeing, neither is the ear filled with hearing.

Cunctae res difficiles; non potest eas homo explicare sermone. Non saturatur oculus visu, nec auris auditu impletur.

[9] What is it that hath been? the same thing that shall be. What is it that hath been done? the same that shall be done.

Quid est quod fuit? Ipsum quod futurum est. Quid est quod factum est? Ipsum quod faciendum est.

[10] Nothing under the sun is new, neither is any man able to say: Behold this is new: for it hath already gone before in the ages that were before us.

Nihil sub sole novum, nec valet quisquam dicere : Ecce hoc recens est : jam enim praecessit in saeculis quae fuerunt ante nos.

[11] There is no remembrance of former things: nor indeed of those things which hereafter are to come, shall there be any remembrance with them that shall be in the latter end.

Non est priorum memoria; sed nec eorum quidem quae postea futura sunt erit recordatio apud eos qui futuri sunt in novissimo.

[12] I Ecclesiastes was king over Israel in Jerusalem,

Ego Ecclesiastes fui rex Israel in Jerusalem;

[13] And I proposed in my mind to seek and search out wisely concerning all things that are done under the sun. This painful occupation hath God given to the children of men, to be exercised therein.

et proposui in animo meo quaerere et investigare sapienter de omnibus quae fiunt sub sole. Hanc occupationem pessimam dedit Deus filiis hominum, ut occuparentur in ea.

[14] I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.

Vidi cuncta quae fiunt sub sole, et ecce universa vanitas et afflictio spiritus.

[15] The perverse are hard to be corrected, and the number of fools is infinite.

Perversi difficile corriguntur, et stultorum infinitus est numerus.

[16] I have spoken in my heart, saying: Behold I am become great, and have gone beyond all in wisdom, that were before me in Jerusalem: and my mind hath contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.

Locutus sum in corde meo, dicens : Ecce magnus effectus sum, et praecessi omnes sapientia qui fuerunt ante me in Jerusalem; et mens mea contemplata est multa sapienter, et didici.

[17] And I have given my heart to know prudence, and learning, and errors, and folly: and I have perceived that in these also there was labour, and vexation of spirit,

Dedique cor meum ut scirem prudentiam atque doctrinam, erroresque et stultitiam; et agnovi quod in his quoque esset labor et afflictio spiritus :

[18] Because In much wisdom there is much indignation: and he that addeth knowledge, addeth also labour.

eo quod in multa sapientia multa sit indignatio; et qui addit scientiam, addit et laborem.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. Jerusalem. This clearly designates Solomon. See v. 12. C. xii. 8.

Ver. 2. Vanities. Most vain and despicable, (C.) and frustrating the expectations of men. M. --- S. Aug. reads vanitantium, and infers that this vanity of sublunary things is an effect of man's sin. Yet he afterwards discovered that he had read incorrectly. Ret. i. 7.

Ver. 3. Labour. People fight for a mere point; for such is the earth compared with the universe. Sen. q. Nat. Hoc est punctum, &c. Matt. xvi. 26.

Ver. 4. Ever. Its substance remains, though the form be changed. C. --- At the end of time, it will be purified to continue for ever. W.

Ver. 5. Place daily. Its annual motion is then mentioned. C.

Ver. 6. Spirit. The sun, (S. Jer.) which is like the soul of the world, and which some have falsely asserted to be animated; or rather (C.) the wind is meant, as one rises in different parts of the world when another falls. Pliny ii. 27. M.

Ver. 7. Again. The sea furnishes vapours, &c. Homer (Il. f.) expresses himself in the same manner.

Ver. 8. Hearing. In all sciences there are many difficulties. If a man had arrived at perfect knowledge, his researches would cease.

Ver. 10. New. Such vicissitudes have occurred before, though we must not infer that the world is eternal; or that there have been many others before this, as Origen would suppose. Prin. iii. 5. &c. C. --- Men's souls, which are created daily, are nevertheless of the same sort as Adam's was; and creatures proceed from others of the same species, which have been from the beginning. S. Tho. p. 1. q. 73. W. --- Natural and moral things continue much the same. M.

Ver. 11. Things. Otherwise we should read of similar events to those which we behold. The same cause naturally produces the same effect.

Ver. 12. Israel. This was the case with none of Solomon's descendants. C.

Ver. 14. Vexation. Heb. also, "food of wind;" (Sym.) or "choice of the spirit." Sept. People are eager to become learned, and yet find no satisfaction. H. --- All natural things are insufficient to procure felicity. W.

             O Curas hominum! O quantum est in rebus inane! Persius.

Ver. 15. Perverse. Habitual and obstinate sinners. C. --- Fools, who follow the broad road. H. --- Heb. and Sept. "the defect cannot be numbered." We know not to what a height the soul of man might have risen, if he had continued faithful.

Ver. 16. Learned. Solomon was blessed both with a natural genius, which he improved by study, and also he had the gift of supernatural wisdom. Yet he declares that all is vanity and pain.

Ver. 17. Errors. Sept. "parables and science." But to discern the mistakes of men is a part of wisdom, (C.) and Grabe substitutes "wanderings," instead of "parables," after Theodot. as Heb. ealluth (H.) means "errors," (C.) or "follies." Mont.

Ver. 18. Labour. He is bound to do more for heaven, as he is convinced of his own defects, and of the strict judgments of God. Wisdom is not true happiness, but the means to obtain it. W. --- The more a person knows, the more he is convinced of his own ignorance, (C.) and filled with grief, that wisdom should be so much concealed. S. Jer. - Those who are learned, feel indignant that their disciples should be so dull. M.
