---- Half asleep, barely together with it, Mary looks over to see one of her notebooks in her contemporary's hands. A recognition plays on her features, but she does not stir any further. She had promised to lay her mind and soul bare for the Prospector... this, her addled mind concluded, "'s par for th' course..."

Opening the notebook itself contained writings that date back to Mary's time as a Scholar of Mensis, but the back half of the book... Lists Names. Each name has at least a single sentence. They depict identifiable features, traits or mannerisms. Whatever came first to the scholar.

Those that survived the first descents have more notes written, as she committed the information to paper and memory. Only four names have such notes written.

Of these four... Only one has more than a paragraph.

Hazel Haizal HEYSEL

(I finally asked how to spell her name.) ---- Dark skin, dark hair, and a smile that seems all the more luminous in contrast to both.

× Met her again. The early days are rough. I didn't think the world could be so physically taxing, but this is the path I chose. We saw Niklaus be crushed by one of the sentinels. A rotund, pale man with nary a cloth upon him. Yet she smiles. Is she trying to avoid the thoughts? Or has she accepted the death that easily? This is Yharnam, the dead line the streets, found by morning. This was different, seeing him crushed, watching him move and then not. But by the fire, we sit and converse. She unnerves me, if it is an earnest settlement with his death.

× A familiar face. Even in the dark, I believe I nearly shot her 'twixt the eyes. The smile is what made me second guess the pull of the trigger. Unsure if she's adapted to the tombs, but she is certainly carrying herself with as much aloofness as I'd come to expect. When I'd first met Heysel, I remember wondering how quickly her smile would be dulled and smothered by the horrors beneath the city. Again, the night is spent conversing and enjoying a rare company. She tells me of all manner of creatures and plants she has found -- of groves where grasses grow and brilliant pale flowers stare from afar. She so readily jests that they emerge into giant insects that conjure flame and stars alike. As if it is common occurrence. But... the way she speaks does not tire me. It's refreshing, for once. Odd, queer, and unusual. But not unwelcome.

× It feels like months since we last spoke, her and I. Perhaps years, hah. It is difficult to tell, down here. I could count the times I sleep but that wouldn't be days, now would it? I could calculate the days based on my sleeping schedule when we return from a dive, but it'd be fruitless since it changes. But this time... beneath the burning sun, we emerged within days of each other. I don't believe I've ever been so happy to see another human being. I only hope I showed my appreciation in a way that she understood it. ...But that too may simply be wishful thinking. I had best not get my hopes up. I can at least trust that out of everyone, that the best Prospector I know can survive.
