rook was a smart man. sensible. careful.
most of the time at least.
everyone had their blind spots, and rook's was cool magic. he could be like a child getting a present when he discovered something new, something fascinating. he'd forgotten elthorn's warning about traps when he noticed the shiny orb that seemed to swirl with a storm inside. how could he not be enchanted when his own magic was a storm inside him.
he reached out for it, a noise of surprise given when elthorn seemed to materialize out of nowhere, swatting his hand away before he could touch it. rook drew his hand back, pouting at elthorn, but that moment allowed him to notice the fairly obvious pressure plate said orb rested upon.
"oh..."

rook, ever the adult, turned to give the shopkeeper the finger as he left with kiran before he made sure to step on the body of the bouncer. he was angry, taking in slow breaths to will himself to calm, fist flexing open and closed with the occasional spark of lightning skittering through his fingers.
but he managed to smile back at kiran, a little forced. "i'm alright, just pissed off. no matter how many times i deal with racist bullshit it still gets right under my skin."
he had no doubt that if that owner could somehow clock him as trans they would have used that too. rook made a mental note to thank varric for his help in his transition again.
"i'm uh, rook. thanks for stepping in. not many people would have."
bystander complex, another thing that pissed rook off. the idea that you do nothing because you assume someone else will.

She wasn't one for minding her own business when it came to things like this. Not in Tevinter anyway. Kiran had just finished a contract. She was a long way from home as she tended to stay out of this side of the South of Thedas but it was an interesting target. Something weird was going on in Tevintor, the Venitori had been more active. She had seen this in her own town. Treviso had more and more running amock. It was disheartening, to say the least.
She had been simply browsing when she heard the commotion. Slinking away into the background, Kiran kept a keen ear. She didn't have to listen heard to hear this bigotory behaviour that made her frown slightly.
How she dressed was did not particularly scream 'crow'. But it helped with being in the background, behind unseen as she found her opening to throw a dagger at the bodyguard. Watching him fall, her eyes shot to the shop owner.
"No one stole anything. You are just looking for an excuse to be an asshole,"
Her voice, matter of fact, no fear. She didn't fear little men who weren't worth the breathing space. She knew most of them were all mouth and no bite. A small smile came to her face as she addressed the victim in this situation.
"Come. This man's wares are a load of shit anyway...Not worth stealing"
As he had been stunned into silence, Kiran directed Rook out of the way, back into the streets of Minrathous. Although she hadn't planned on getting involved in anything, she couldn't help but give Rook a small smile.
"You okay? They didn't give you too much trouble, did they?"

rook listened. he was good at that, a skill honed from his time with varric. it wasn't like he wasn't a good listener beforehand but varric had taught him to really listen, to take in everything, pick up on nuances. it was important for people to fell heard.
"well shit." he spoke eloquently, head tilted as he considered the new information. "it's alright that you didn't tell me. i can imagine there would be people who would not take this information well. slap some sort of label on you akin to abomination."
he hated that term.
"you said you feel like you're being pulled in many different directions. what if we could use that to find your soul pieces? utilize the crossroads and the fade somehow." it was clear his mind was now focused on problem solving without hesitation. that was just how rook was. no thoughts towards if he should do it, if he had time. he'd make time.

tevinter. fucking tevinter.
rook was no stranger to the less desirable aspects of the imperium. his clan had roamed the border of arlathan forest, bringing them in contact with both antiva and tevinter. he'd fought off slavers, had slurs thrown at him from passing merchants. what was just meant to be a simple shopping trip now had rook on the defense, some shitty shop owner accusing him of stealing from them. their bouncer, protection, whatever you wanted to call it stood in the doorway. it was the only exit.
rook stared down the owner, unflinching as they drew their blade and pointed it at his throat. he willed his magic to stay calm but he could feel it beginning to surge inside. lightning was not the easiest element to control on the best of days.
"listen 'ere knife ear. you pay for what you stole or-"
the owner was cut off as the person standing by the door made a sound, then slumped to the ground. the relief rook felt when he saw kiran standing there was clear, blue eyes betraying his fear and anger at the situation despite the defiance set in his stance.

before the veilguard, rook hadn't had many opportunities to get his hands on books for an extended period of time. he was always on the move which meant he needed to keep his pack light, only essentials. for the first time rook had a stable home; and the lighthouse had begun to feel like home.
during the moments between adventures he'd started borrowing books from emmrich. rook would settle somewhere in the courtyard to read, usually with assan at his side so he could pat the griffon. davrin had joked that rook was trying to steal the assan from him, rook replied who wouldn't? anyone was free to sit with the pair, and this time alanis had joined them.
"donnen brennokovic didn't stand on ceremony. he strode through the barracks and slammed open the door to the captain's office without so much as a nod to the guards he passed." rook read from hard in hightown.
"just barely dawn, and already captain hendallen was buried behind a mountain of paperwork taller than the vimmarks. all donnen could see of the captain was her fiery hair and an angry gaze that had stopped more than one pickpocket mid-grift."

rook laughed at elthorn harsh statement, the movement making him give a slight groan as the wound smarted. "hence why i'm putting together a team. i know i can't do this on my own. the hero of ferelden, hawke and even the inquisitor had people around them."
he spoke hawke's name because of varric. while the dwarf had been close to the inquistor, he used her title more often than not. but when he spoke of hawke there was a sense that their bond had been much closer.
maybe when this was all over rook would take varric to see hawke again.
this is exhausting. just being in the presence of rook is draining his energy and he can slowly feel irritation sparking within his chest. he must remain calm, he must do as he has been tasked. even if merely the idea of killing the very god he serves has him reeling.
it is truly fortunate that whilst elthorn has his grievances with the crows his face is not known to them - the diamond will be safe a place as any to be.
❛ you deign to confront the gods, yet a common criminal wounds you. ❜ perhaps it is harsh, but he cannot keep up the niceties indefinitely.
