After some time thinking and doing my own reasearch on the topic. I’ve decided to change Palmer and Drake’s sexualities from heteroflexible, to bisexuality. Palmer has yet to realise and figure out his attraction to other men. And Drake clearly deals with some heavy internalised homophobia, which causes him to act the way he does (on top of clearly being a product of his time).

I believe there’s a relatively old HC post on Drake, that I shoul definetely try to find and change stuff on it. As I no longer stand by nor agree, with what I’ve said in the past.

Drake became a captain of his very first ship, through a mutiny of a ship he used to be part of its crew. And even then, it wasn’t all that easy, there were a few inner fights he had to get through in order to take charge of that position.

Throughout the many years of Drake’s life as a ship captain, he has had to endure his own fair share of mutinies against him from his own crew. Although, they were very rare mostly due to his reputation but also due to him using his pokemon against people.

He was notorious for not feeding his dragons properly, just so they would lash out easier towards anyone else they came across.

Drake has blood in his hands, he has taken out people’s lives. Those mutinies were far, from being friendly in any way or shape.

Because everything took place in open waters (very far away from any land), there were no evidences, or even witnesses and since no one reported them. It is difficult for people to believe, such mutinies happened in the first place due to the type of sources not being the most reliable ones. Drake is no exception of it.

So, I think out of all of Lance’s incarnations, the one version mine appears to distance himself the most is the one from the manga. So, this means that Lance doesn’t have any resemblance of special powers, which grant him some form of empathy (or make him feel his pokemon’s emotions-- something like that, I can’t quite recall atm).

With that said though, my Lance clearly has a far better understanding and deeper connection with his pokemon, than anyone else.

In the canon, Drake’s views on the matter are pretty standard. As in, it’s not that different from anyone else, who works for the League. It’s always treated as the most important thing ever, that sort of stuff. But, when it comes to my Drake? Things are quite different, once you look into how he raised and treated his pokemon.

Clearly, his definition of bonds between humans and pokemon, hasn’t aged well and it wouldn’t be received well in the present day’s League. He raised his pokemon to despise him, I don’t think that any kind of friendship can be found here.

// So out of all my muses, only a handful of them actually celebrate christmas. The majority of them simply treat it as a normal day, since their focus is on the New year’s eve (or another holiday in their region). Only the following muses actually get to celebrate it:

Barry and Palmer: Christmas was the only time of the year Palmer was capable of visiting, and spending some time with his family. Although, once Barry started travelling abroad- the reunions became something far more intimate between Palmer and his wife. Most of the regions Barry has travelled to don’t celebrate this holiday, so there have been a few years he has gone by without celebrating it. But there were a few christmas, that he spent in pokecenters alongside other trainers that stayed over.

Drake: Drake got a taste of the holiday through his travels all over the world, by interacting with other sailors or stopping by around that time in regions such as Unova and Kalos. Christmas isn’t celebrated in Hoenn, so he is pretty neutral about the holiday as a whole. Overall, he has had good experiences involving it.

Juan: Kalos is amongst the few regions that celebrate the holiday, Juan’s family never missed it out- and he carried over the tradition even after cutting ties with them. Juan enjoys almost everything related to it, from decorating his mansion to hosting huge parties for the special day.

Tabitha: Tabitha only began celebrating it, once he moved into Unova. At first he would hesitantly participate on it, in order to try and not raise anyone’s eyebrows - or cause anyone to question the fake story he gave others. Eventually, the holiday grew on him and he started getting used to it.

Riley: He spends it all by himself. He is nowhere to be found during the holiday, no one seems to know where he has gone to. However, his disappearance doesn’t seem to worry anyone- not even his partner, Byron. It’s an odd phenomenon to put it mildly, the man simply waits for his return- and doesn’t seem to be concerned at all about the whereabouts of his so-called “loved one”.

Rowan: Rowan spends christmas with Richard. Simply put and self-explenatory, it is a rare moment in both men’s lives where they have some actual free time for themselves. Usually, he travels all the way to Iron island and spends it there with him. Although, as of lately- they have spent a few christmas eves in the professor’s place in Sandgen town.

Kahili: Alola may not celebrate christmas, but this is a huge event that is held by her father’s hotel. People from all over the world, gather up to participate in it- after all it is the perfect place to spend the holiday. Although, Kahili tends to spend this time of the year in Kalos, with her mother’s new family. She seems to be neutral about it, Kahili doesn’t mind the holiday at all.

I want to start by reminding how the environment he grew into/was raised in molded Drake this way. These ideals have sticked with him, even in the present times. When these views, have long since been deemed outdated.

Be aware: This isn’t something isolated to him. His circle of old friends, not limited to mr.Briney and even Joseph share some of these views (albeit in different degrees between these two). Especially amongst other sailors and his shipcrew.

EDIT 10/11/21- If Drake had found himself in a complete and different context, then he probably would have had an easier time accepting his attraction to men. He wouldn’t be tied to some deeprooted biphobia. However, that’s not the development he got.

Homosexuality amongst sailors has always been a huge taboo, it is something that happens very frequently as well. It is an unspoke thing, a common secret, that everyone is well aware of at the risk of facing huge consequences for it.

If the person didn’t fit in with the ideal of a macho(tm) man, then they wouldn’t stand a chance in this environment. They would immediately be seen as inferior, weak, and the humiliation alongside with the degradation would only get worse. Even the slightest rumor, would mean the end for somone.

Drake has witnessed what happens to these individuals. This isn’t a kind place for those people... Or anyone really. Because of this, he has worked his hardest to build a reputation that would prevent anyone to look at him in the wrong way. All while being extremely picky, choosing carefully about the men he would end up having flings with.

With those things said, his homophobia is more of a blanket he wears publicly. It is heavily tied, to his need to maintain his infamous reputation amongst others. He will do what he must, in order to maintain everything he worked so hard for.

Even if he may be the biggest hypocrite, in the end of the day. Because he enjoys, the company of men, just as much as a lady’s.

There doesn’t seem to be a limit, in regards to the lengths he’d do to guarantee this. Those include:

Watching/joining in beating up someone (often times, he was the instigator);

Betraying men that got a little, too attached/soft for him by outing them;

Beaten them up all by himself, all while humiliating them for their surrounding’s entertainment;

Thrown men over sea from his ship or onto his dragons (it was common for him to not feed his dragons, for these types of situations);

And many others.

He has done awful things, and he doesn’t seem to regret what he has done. At least, not in a context where he gets together with a man. But even then, he doesn’t fully regret what he has done. Because he knows: there was no other way or option for him.

Obviously everything above, doesn’t take any romantic verse involving him into consideration. He changes a lot, if he by luck, gets in a committed relationship while relatively young. Just to keep it short: He wouldn’t do anything to his partner (this doesn’t apply to others), but he would still have to keep their relationship a secret.

“If ye were, in the same position that I was. Ye’d have done the same thing.”

Nowadays, it is very easy to point at this trait and say how this is just another sign of stupidity. But, his homophobia is unfortunately something he had to adopt in order to survive. And he has been unable to let it go by himself, to this day. Although, nowadays he seems to have toned this down a lot, thanks to his contact with the likes of Joseph (who despite sharing some more conservative views like him, has helped him to open his mind about certain things and become a bit more accepting. It is a start, is what I’m trying to say) and his time at the League has contributed to this as well (this is an unaccepting behavior, on top of having contact with younger trainers from very different origins/backgrounds).

Dating pros & cons

Pros

Extremely loyal & trustworthy to their partner. You can count on him for anything, really.

Has tons of stories and tales to share, either about himself or he heard from others.

Underneath all of that roughness, he has a softer and affectionate side. He just, was never capable of demonstrating it.

Will take you out to sail around on his ship.

He will wear a shirt whenever he is at home, HE PROMISES.

Quite strong for a scrawny looking man.

Cons

Tobbacco and alcohol addictions. Because of it, he has a heavy stench of them, it may not be pleasant to most people. Needless to say, but he doesn’t have the best health conditions. It’s difficult to deal with an addict.

He will only take you on board of his ship, if you are a man. No women allowed. One might say he’s being sexist, however, don’t forget how supersticious Drake can actually be.

He is illiterate, he has had no formal education at all in his life. Drake is ignorant (lack of knowledge), headstrong and quite short-fused. He will not take bs from anyone, including his partners.

He carries with himself views and opinions, that have been deemed outdated for decades now. He has a hard time changing his views.

You will have to work very hard to earn his trust and loyalty.

The stories about himself may sound like outlandish claims, it is as though he is making things up, exaggerating things. And without any evidence, or proof to sustain his stories, it might be difficult to believe in what you hear from him. Especially, given the fact of how much alcohol he consumes, clearly that must be messing up his memories and his ability to tell his stories.

His pokemon. It isn’t safe at all, to be near them by yourself.

His trust and loyalty have limits, cherish them and tend to it. Otherwise, you will end up losing it.

Because of his line of work, it’s extremely difficult to make him stay around on land- or in a place for too long (sometimes, enough).

// Some flying HCs I guess:

Flying on the back of a pokemon to a destination, is definetely the fastest way to travel. However, it’s far from being the safest and only truly experienced trainers get to afford this luxury. From safety gears, to even using the right kind of pokemon that could withstand these types of travels.

Death while flying without any of the things mentioned above, is a common ocurrance. As such, this is a method not really encouraged by the League- and just about anyone really.

Lance uses this method all the time to assist him travelling through the Tojoh continent, and often relies on it whenever he needs to head out abroad.

His pokemon of choice for this is Zentrum, his signature Dragonite. He is the most fit to make through, the long distances with relative ease and speed.

Lance may have been raised in a location with low air pressure, however he always wears special gear when flying (masks, goggles, another coat to assist him with the changes in temperature, parachute, rein for Dragonite, etc). Think of a jet plane pilot, in a sort of way.

While in the air like this, Lance can only communicate via gestures and signs. (Similar to the ones used by an air force pilot);

There have been a few casualties throughout his years, of flying on Dragonite. He has come very close to death, or badly injure himself on a few occasions;

The art of flying on the back of pokemon, isn’t something exclusive to his clan. However, he learned it from his mentors back in Blackthorn city, only in theory. The practice however, he had to start it shortly after he became an elite member.

Steven also uses this method in order to travel, regardless of his destination this is his preferred method of getting around places, especially around Hoenn. Where he is most well known, and easily recognized by his peers:

As expected: Metagross is his go-to pokemon for this task. He is the only one, who can withstand long distance travels. Also, Metagross’ psychic abilities assist in keeping his trainer safely on top of it;

Much like Lance, Steven also carries with him and wears special gear when flying. He also knows how to communicate via gestures and signs (those used by air force pilots);

Steven has also had a few casualties, while flying. One of which, he was forced to let go of Metagross so he could safely land;

He learned to fly all by himself, he self-taught this skill. Through books, practice, and buying the right equipment.

Drake is another one who uses this method to get around places. However, unlike Lance and Steven, he rarely needs to use this. After all, his favorite method of travelling is still by the sea:

He has two options while flying. Salamence is used for longer travels, in situations he needs to arrive at a certain date/hour, he mega evolves him to guarantee a lot more speed. Meanwhile, his Flygon is only used for shorter trips- within the continent/land, since they can’t last that long.

The same things mentioned on Steven and Lance, also apply to Drake.

Many casualties have happened, which only further makes him try to use fly as the very last option for him. They involved both of his dragons, but especially with his Salamence.

He was partially taught how to fly by the draconids, and later by the Devon corp. For sometime, Joseph believed that flying could help in the deliveries services. However, he was quickly proven wrong- after the loss from a few loads, which ultimately convinced him to abandon this project altogether. If Drake, his best employee, can’t make this work- then anyone else would fail extraordinarily.

A few special mentions:

Morty may use his Drifblim to get around places, by flying. However, this is kept to a very minimun, as it has proven to be a very unreliable method and pokemon. It can easily get dragged away by gusts of wind, it may not go high enough to require special equipment while flying, however he is at the same height as most of the tallest trees and buildings around Johto. He can’t even get to higher places, such as Blackthorn city this way.

Brendan is currently in the process of learning how to fly, on the back of his Salamence.

Contrary to what most people think: Kahili doesn’t fly on the back of any of her pokemon to get around places. She may do it, for a golf tournament but that’s it. She doesn’t have any pokemon with herself, that is suitable for doing any travels in the air. She doesn’t even risk, travelling to the other islands this way.

Palmer doesn’t use fly at all. He has never bothered to learn it, despite in theory his Dragonite could easily endure these sort of travels.

Riley is currently learning to fly, he wishes to use his Metagross for this. He is clearly, taking inspiration and trying to mimic Steven.

I’m giving this answer it’s own post, because of how relevant it is to my muses:

Agatha would fight on the spot:

Rowan, out of sheer spite because he stood by Oak’s side when her fallout with the professor happened.

Blaine:

Morty, the man has been annoying- pestering him about his vocal support for the destruction of the pokemon tower.

Pryce:

Morty, he brought this upon himself for being a brat and showed himself to be a snake towards his colleagues.

Barry:

Palmer, he always wants to battle his father! He wants to show him his progress, whenever he can.

Lance, a boy can dream right? He is a huge fan of Lance and wants to see those Dragonites in battle;

Brendan, Hoenn’s newest champion. He has heard his story, and would love to have the honor to fight against someone who reminds him of his friend Dawn.

Morty, Blaine, Pryce and Juan, they are gym leaders he needs their badges for his collection.

Palmer:

Lance and Steven, maybe there could be a lot more behind his friendly banter with the League members after all. He wants to show, the frontier’s superiority to their rival organisation, and he has the skills to rival most champions.

Drake:

Juan, he has crossed his line a few too many times in the past. He can’t wait for his chance, to deck that fancy looking face for good;

Rowan and Blaine, they are researchers he hates these types of people. He has the misconception, that they will try to steal his pokemon from him. Also, Rowan insists in bugging him about his beliefs that they are related to each other;

Palmer, the man has had a few runs in with Steven. He isn’t someone allowed, near him.

Lance:

Palmer, just to get that smirk off his face. He can’t stand that man for long;

Steven, just to further taunt and ruin his reputation and prove himself to be the superior trainer out of them;

Riley:

Morty, if they met each other. Riley would be immediately intrigued about the man’s non existent aura, and would definetely try to do some digging on him. Something that Morty wouldn’t allow;

Brendan:

Tabitha, if they ran into each other again. It would be the end of Tabitha’s disguise as Homura, Brendan wouldn’t allow him to seek out redemption or forgiveness.

The pokemon TCG is a thing in the pokemon world, and it is largerly sponsored by the pokemon League. It helps to promote their famous trainers (champions/e4 members/gym leaders/etc), as well as grab the attention and interest of non-trainers. This is a combining effort, of every region’s league.

Despite this game being funded by the League, it still acknowledges their rival organisation - the battle frontier.

The game is pretty popular, and is often having worldwide tournaments. Obviously, it can’t be compared to any pokemon League tournament but it does have it’s own place in the field of entertainment.

Most players consist of people who just couldn’t get a grasp for training, had no interest at all in it, or found it to be too intimidating.

When these pokemon are around- near him, Salamence seems to stay unusually quieter if not downright cower himself in a corner (which is the case with Steven’s Metagross, who has repeatedly proved itself to be superior to him in almost every aspect).

Reminder that this is all being based off the games. The idea of Steven being the one, who put them together comes from the manga, meaning that idea is irrelevant here. Yes, he may have had a hand at picking the members, but it wasn’t something like just putting people together.

And on that note, I’m writing this with ORAS in mind. However, with a little divergence in the shape of: Each elite four member had their own keystones and mega evolutions, before Steven was even a thing in their lives.

Short answer: strictly professional.

Drake has always stood as the elite four members leader. By the time emerald rolls around, he has been keeping his title for almost over 10 years. The way he saw, and treated the other three elite members never changed.

Obviously, when he joined the pokemon League things were drastically changed. He stands amongst the oldest employees of the organisation, and he has seen countless overhauls to the composition of the Elite four sector.

Also I’m going to say it: But Flannery’s grandfather, used to work with Drake for a handful of years. Until he lost his title, to the one that succeeded him. The grandfather, isn’t Ka.bu.

Many have tried to claim Drake’s title, but none ever came close to defeating him. There are a handful of factors that also contribute to him, keeping his place there, the biggest one being his skills as a leader.

All his life being the captain of his own shipcrew, only serve as a testimony to these skills.

As such, he sees his colleagues no different from a subordinate of his shipcrew, he treats and talks to them in the same exact way he would do it on board of his ship. Albeit, with some limitations that are expected in this sort of environment.

One of these limitations - hinderings, is his illiteracy. This is a flaw, that many other members of the League, have pointed out, and use it against Drake, in an attempt to question his position;

Even though these critics haven’t done anything, to bring him down. It is easy to tell and safe to assume, how humiliating it is for him to ask for someone’s help in order to read something for him

Needless to say, but still important to mention: Not all of his time and experience as a captain, translated well - is helpful for him in the League. Drake doesn’t know how to use words, he is brute and has no filter while talking, all that he knows is to be as intimidating as possible. He isn’t someone, anyone would like to get on the bad side of. But that tactic, is bound to fail in this context

Actually, here is a difference between his shipcrew, and his elite member colleagues. And it is the fact that: Drake has never bothered or even showed any interest in getting to know his colleagues. He only knows their names, ages, their type specialties, and that’s all he needs.

Sidney: He’s a punk, young with a lot of attitude - someone who showed signs of defiance towards Drake’s orders and his figure of a leader, for their start at least. Drake makes no attempt, to hide the fact that he doesn’t fully trust on him. But, seeing how Steven still keeps him around, then surely there must be something worthwhile.

Phoebe: Because of his superstitious beliefs, he feels a tad intimidated by her ability of communing with ghosts (even though in reality, it’s just the pokemon itself and not the actual ghosts- spirits of the deceased). For the most part, he tells himself that isn’t real, and never shows any signs of fear in front of her. However, it isn’t uncommon for him to feel chills run down his spine while around her.

Glacia: They just can’t get along, no matter the situation. They don’t seem to agree on anything, and make it very clear that they only barely tolerate the other’s presence, a third person is always needed to try and make them stop. She’s a lady- always so graceful, whereas Drake is the exact opposite of her. This is something mostly driven out of spite from Glacia’s end, she challenged Drake in the past for his position - and despite having a type advantage, she lost. Instead of being completely dismissed by the League, she managed to land as the 3rd elite member there. She is one of the biggest critics, about Drake’s position because of his illiteracy. Needless to say, but she never got over her deafeat, and is still trying to take the leadership from him.

Proper training, preparation and support for League’s members. Not all Leagues can afford this type of project, when it comes to their employees- especially so early on their existence in a region. It is a necessary measurement, however it is very expensive to sustain it.

Pokemon battling for a living, is very different from doing it out of passion/fun. There is a sense of obligation to it, which combined with all the rest of their duties can become overwhelming for most trainers.

I’m bringing this up, because not all of my gym leaders/elite members received this sort of training from the organisation they work for.

Despite Kanto and Johto’s near bankruptcy state at the time, they went ahead and invested in this project. Even though it was way out of their budget, it clearly was meant to cover up some type of corruption/money laundry scheme. In Johto’s case, this was what nearly killed the organisation in the region (they had already spent a large amount of money hiring the most qualified trainers in their respective fields).

As such, Agatha, Lance, Morty, Pryce and Blaine have received the proper training for their respective jobs and duties.

In Hoenn’s case, because the League was sharing grounds with the frontier since the beginning. They needed to grow, and establish themselves quickly- while not blowing their budget. They needed to garner attention to them, so they seeked out popular/famous trainers from the time. Their skills have never been taken into consideration, and they couldn’t afford any type of proper training/preparation.

Juan hasn’t received the training, as such - this contributed to his burn out pretty early on his gym leader work. Although, by the time he returned he has finally received the so much needed training.

Drake’s case was an exception. He originally wasn’t going to receive any type of trainning, however, this was paid/funded by mr.Stone. Obviously, he isn’t aware of this detail.

Alola is currently in a similar situation as Hoenn’s, from 30-20 years in the past. They are brand new in the region, with a very limited budget (it is currently being spent on hiring and building the establishments). On top of having to try and earn people’s interests, seeing how the League is clashing with the local traditions. Much like Hoenn, they have also gathered up popular/famous faces in Alola - battle skills weren’t taken into any consideration in the picking process.

Kahili hasn’t received any type of proper training, and her signs of burn out are showing - and are pretty apparent. They will only worsen, the longer she stays as an elite member.

Drake has a very strong caring and affectionate side, underneath all of his usual intimidating- angry demeanor. This is rarely ever brought out, only very few people have witnessed this trait. Those include, mr Briney (& his daughters), Joseph and Steven Stone (my take on the character).

However, Drake would rather keep this softer side of his in secret. It will not do any favor, to the image he worked so hard to build for him.

This caring side of his, obviously, shines the most whenever he is around his S/O and those he deems to be the closest to him (and his family- depending on the verse/plot).

If Drake had children, he would actually be a pretty affectionate/caring parent to them. He would still be a distant one, given his line of work, but whenever he is around? He wouldn’t hold back, in being extremely affectionate towards them.
