Part 1 - The Beginning

“Mother Miranda, I’ve been requesting new maids for at least six months to this day.”

“That’s because you keep eating your other ones.”

You were shaken awake.

“I think that my castle would be best suited for her.”

“Oh, so you can bleed ‘er dry? You think that would really be the best use of anyone’s time?” A familiar voice retorted.

“Good morning!” A shrill voice squeaked as what felt like wood kicked at your face. “She’s up! She’s up! She’s up!” It exclaimed excitedly with a bounce, the voice became softer as the skittering of feet scrambled away.

“Ah,” the unfamiliar smooth woman’s voice cooed as your eyes adjusted to your surroundings. There were what looked to be six figures in the room. Miranda stood before you, perched upon a stage-like area that once housed what you could only imagine was a priest or preacher. To the left sat a cloaked woman with a blob of white resting in her lap. Another woman, also adorned in a white garb, sat towering over the rest, the light constant trickle of smoke danced upward from her vintage cigarette holder. On your right sat a familiar face, the man from the village who had saved you only a few hours prior. You’d come to know him as Lord Heisenberg. He maintained the large woman’s gaze, but the look held no love or any remote sense of familial belonging. Instead, his eyes were set ablaze, even behind the shaded rims of his glasses. Lastly, a shorter creature with a large hunched back moved ungracefully around. Its long gangly arms accompanied by its deformed face only aided in the growing unease.

The dull ache of your shoulder only distracted you from the bindings of your wrists for a moment. Your attention was quickly drawn to the rough ropes that dug their thorny threads into the soft skin of your wrists. Everything ached, mentally and physically.

“I do think she would be best suited with me.” The tall woman repeated herself. “There’s no doubt Moreau wouldn’t be able to handle her, and likely not the rest of you either.”

The hunched creature whirled back, throwing a forlornly glare in the woman’s direction. You supposed that was Moreau.

“You think I couldn’t handle her?” Heisenberg shot back, bent forward to rest his weight on his heels. His relationship with the large woman was clearly tumultuous given his outburst and her subsequent reaction.

“You always get them.” The shrill voice called. It was the doll; the fucking doll was talking... not that this should surprise you at this point. “She should come with us! We need more friends.”

“You’re not included in this conversation.” The tall woman mocked with a fierce glare shot violently at the doll as its mouth hung slack.

“Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?” Thus far, nobody had managed to answer your simple question. The lot turned toward you, the majority with piercing stares. “Guess not.” You muttered, becoming quite fed up with the range of emotions you had been experiencing over the past day. If it kept going in this direction, you’d surely have to be treated for whiplash.

“She’s already proven to be a considerable pain in my neck.” Miranda loudly projected. Her steps were a clear juxtaposition to her tone, falling light on the church floor as she approached. “One villager is unable to walk, another dead.”

“Dead?” The words fell before you could stop yourself. She didn’t answer.

“Please,” Heisenberg leaned back once more, his hand moving to the interior of his jacket, “the dumb thing practically laid down when she was attacked by a lycan.” His fingers fumbled around the darkened paper of a cigar. Yellow, blonde streaks flashed upon his face as the distinguishable clink of a metal lighter was flicked. “I wouldn’t call that too capable.”

“My friend pushed me.” You argued, once again mentally reeling for the outburst.

Heisenberg let out a huff of smoke, intentionally blowing it in the tall woman’s direction, “sounds like a piss poor friend.”

“Enough.” Miranda had taken to her spot at the front near the alter once more. “The girl shall go to Alcina.”

A wicked smile crossed the tall woman’s face. “Thank you, Mother Miranda. It is so good to have you back.”

“Where are you from?” One of the girls ushered you through the depths of the castle. She wore a simple gown with stitches at the bottom, holding together the frail fabric that looked to be decades old.

“America.”

The girl cocked her head to the side like a newborn. “I don’t know of that town.”

Upon arrival you were escorted down to what was described as the maids’ chambers. In a small stone room, you were assigned a cot, given a chest, and told to change into uniform. Your arm ached and spasmed as you lifted the lid of the trunk open. Somewhere between being shot by the villagers and being transported to Castle Dimitrescu, the bullet was removed from your shoulder and replaced with gauze that limited the mobility of your arm. The distinct oily feeling of grease caused friction between the bandages and your clothes; the ache of alcohol still stung, causing a sore numbness.

The Lady insisted all maids conform to the strict code of dress. Long, unflattering dresses, short heels, and sometimes a headscarf if hair wasn’t pulled tautly into a bun at the base of one’s neck were a few things to name the least. You always wore the headscarf, which was a thin piece of grey lace that attached at the peak of your hairline, cascading over your shoulders to land at waist-length.

The rest of the day passed slowly. You learned the ins and outs of the castle, became acquainted with the sparse staff that only consisted of women, and met Alcina’s daughters from a distance. The next two weeks passed the same way.

Wake up, clean the castle, serve Lady and her daughters, go to bed. That was your routine. Though, the sounds that seeped from the halls at night prompted unwavering curiosity. Heisenberg had mentioned the ill-fated maids that had the luxury of serving the Dimitrescu women back in that church. Nothing at this point had you doubting that was the case. But you assured yourself daily that you would not accept the castle’s fate; you would get out of here one way or another.

You had only been at the mercy of Lady Dimitrescu once to this day. A small spat broke out between maids and the arrival of the head of house had the women squealing lies of how you were the one to start it.

“She stole our rations!” The girl with the wide nose accused her chubby finger outstretched in your direction.

“I didn’t steal anything, you dirty fucking liar.”

“She did. We were squabbling over how she should be punished.” The other girl replied, tucking a shaking hand behind her back as she straightened her poor posture.

“A thief,” Alcina regarded you, “that’s a shame.” Knives skid across the thin skin of your forearm. “Another outburst like this and there will be harsher consequences.” Red stained her tongue as she ran the claw through her cherry-red lips.

As she sauntered down the hall and out of sight, you uncurled your arm from your chest, wincing at the large crimson stain it left on your dress.

“Fresh face.” The words ricocheted off the wall in front of you. Footsteps steadfastly approached from behind. He walked with an effortless swagger, legs slightly bowed with each lyrical step. You’d gone for the quiet route after the situation, finding that silence often pleased those that ruled over the castle. “Here I was thinkin’ it would take you a little longer to lose that fight.” He stepped closer; the unmissable smell of tobacco seeped from his lips. “Looks like I was wrong.”

Instead of words, you held his gaze through unimpressed eyes. Hues of yellows, greys, and greens met yours from beneath his rounded glasses. You could see more of him from here. A large scar ran from the right of his face to the left, the lifted skin healing over leaving memories of whatever had happened. In fact, the majority of his face was plagued with scars. One ran from the bottom of his lip down to his chin, disappearing beneath the stubble of his beard. You wondered if his disdain toward Alcina was founded by those wretched claws of hers. His hair was wirey with shades of brown and peppered grey streaking through the ends. Quite honestly, he was an attractive man.

“I’ve got a name, you know?”

“I don’t think I cared to ask.”

“Then I suppose you aren’t deserving of one either.”

“Well,” he tapped at your chest with a gloved finger, “I think you’ve got a little spunk left in you, sweetheart.”

“Call me Y/n.”

“No last name?” He deadpanned.

“L/n.”

He nodded, but you felt as though your words had passed through him like a ghost.

“Karl.” He gave a lazy bow, tilting the rim of his hat. “But I think you probably already knew that.”

“Gossip and information don’t come easily from the maids here. Sorry,” you pressed your lips together, “I didn’t know.”

Karl gave a shrug.

“Do you know what happened to my friend?” The thought had been playing on your mind for the past few weeks.

He raised an inquisitive brow and turned his head to peer out the shaded window. “The so-called friend that left you to become lycan chow?” A hearty tut left his chest. “I think she’s assimilated into the town.”

“Dumb bitch.” You breathed.

“There’s that spark.” He stood tall with an artificial sense of pride. It had been a long time since somebody in the village was willing to use such crude language in front of any of the Lords, let alone Miranda. It almost astonished him that they’d let you live after the killing of Adelina’s brother. The gun misfired; it wasn’t really your fault.

Another week of growing suspicions and two newly missing maids, you finally attempted to seek out the dungeons that everyone spoke of but warned to stray from. You had to know what was going on here.

“Lost?” Heisenberg’s voice appeared at your right side. His chin almost rested upon your shoulder; the stubble of his beard scratched at your neck. “This isn’t a place I’d get lost in if I were you. In fact, it’s not even a place you should be exploring.”

“Are you going to run to Alcina if I do?” You didn’t face him, why would you? The hallway was cramped, restricting of any sort of movement other than in the direction you were going.

“Me?” He leaned backward to stand at full height. Your body cursed silently, wishing nothing more than to have him close again. How he wasn’t hitting his head on the rafter just inches above floored you. “I hate that bitch. You do what you want, but I won’t bail you out when you get caught.”

“Good thing I don’t plan on being caught then.” You descended the metal ladder, only looking upward for a moment to catch a glimpse of Heisenberg leaning over the opening. An eerie smile was plastered on his lips, it was almost smug.

The dungeons were as you imagined. Cold water trickled down some of the walls, likely due to cracks in the castle’s foundation accompanied by the ever melting of the outside snow. It smelled of mothballs and garlic, something musty was clinging to the air. You noted a few turns here and there, attempting to memorize the path you had taken in case you needed to make a swift escape. What didn’t help was the skid of your maid’s clothes along the rigid floor.

Muffled cries put you further onto the edge. The narrow hall gave way to a large room filled with arched stonework. Metal bars shot from floor to ceiling, hinges creaked as the sound of hands banging against them filled your eardrums. You didn’t want to go further, scared of any repercussions should any of the jailed women recognize and rat you out.

Turning to head to the ladder, you collided with a chest. “Leaving so soon?” Heisenberg again.

“Shh!” You slapped at his chest with a closed fist, only realizing what you had done when the action was completed. He looked rightfully amused. Everything that you had learned of these “Lords” up to now told you to act less casually with him, to put on an air of respect at the very least. But there was something surprisingly human about him. Something that told you it was okay despite it potentially not being so. At this point, you were only prolonging the inevitable.

“What?” He started, swiftly being cut off by approaching footsteps. Firm hands grasped at your arms, pulling your face forward into his chest. “Open your mouth and I’ll feed you to whatever’s coming.” He said through his teeth, trapping your arms between your two bodies.

The room grew dim, the wall behind your back became close even though you had not moved at all. Heisenberg’s grip was strong on your forearms, causing you to inaudibly hiss as his thumb dug into the slash Alcina had left weeks prior. The footsteps were accompanied by the soft cries of a woman, gasping pleas of being let go falling silent on the ears of her assailant. A minute passed; the dungeon fell soundless.

“You can breathe now.” His lips lingered close to your ear, once again sending a rush of chills crawling down your skin. He knew what he was doing.

“I’ve been breathing.” You breathily retorted sounding as if you had just run a marathon.

“Whatever you say, doll.”

The wall behind you gave way, moving on its own. You turned; the materials that had been pressed to your back laid themselves on the ground. Heisenberg’s smile was unmissable. “Go ahead.” His voice was gravely, gruff, a slight melancholy dismay underlying. Heisenberg desired for you to implore what just happened, but you wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. You refused to see him as anything but normal, for if you did give in to the village’s mental games, you’d likely find yourself going mad. He was a man, you told yourself, nothing more.

“I thought you weren’t going to bail me out?”

“I wasn’t.” He tightened his grip on your arms. “But I figured it’d be a shame to lose such a pretty face so soon.”

“I, I’m sure you say that to all the girls here.” You couldn’t hold his gaze at this distance. Perhaps Adelina was right, you were rather frumpy and unexperienced.

A huff came as he exhaled, a thoughtful tug of his lips upward accompanied it. He didn’t answer, a reoccurring event with those who inhabited this town.

Heisenberg had been keeping his trips to and from the castle a secret. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure why he felt so inclined to bother with the outsider woman who appeared in the village one fateful evening. Perhaps he was growing bored of his daily routine with no results to show. Maybe he was enticed by the well of knowledge you held of the outside world. Maybe it was something else, something human. The Lord’s weren’t allowed to stray far from the village. The other three lived delightfully oblivious, completely okay with never exploring the unknown. Heisenberg, on the other hand, was not. Your friend, Jess as he recalled you calling her, was far from interesting to him. It didn’t take a genius to tell how low her I.Q. had to be. She conformed easily to the village and by all accounts had been down talking you to the others she met. She quickly fell into the same brainwashed daze of worship.

It had been another turbulent week of utter chaos around every corner. Nobody knew of your adventure into the depths of Castle Dimitrescu and you had no intentions of spreading any gossip among the maids. They all seemed to have it out for you anyway. You were the “outsider,” as one described it. It was so blatantly evident to them that you were not going to conform to their ways. And that disturbed them.

It wasn’t that you hadn’t your fair share of punishment to this point. In actuality, you had received a significantly greater amount of beratements and surface wounds from Alcina and her daughters. You thought to Heisenberg often, continually wondering how your life would differ had Miranda bestowed you upon him. He was irresistibly charming in his own twisted sense. Every word that escaped his mouth heavily contradicted his actions. You received a good number of swats to the hand stemming from woeful daydreaming of the man you hardly knew.

He could be dangerous, you’d tell yourself before slipping into yet another sequence of fervent and unrelenting thoughts stemming from the mysterious man. He was a Lord, one placed in a top position according to the village’s hierarchy. You just weren’t sure why.

There had been countless times the man had sauntered into the castle, “accidentally” run into you, and held brief conversation.

The other maids were assholes. Though you had concluded this swiftly upon entering the castle, their recent actions only solidified your feelings.

It had been only a day since Heisenberg’s last visit. He strolled into the castle, easing his way past the maids as they hurriedly passed by. They paid him no mind. The evening sun had begun to set in the sky. Lady Dimitrescu had gone out for the night, instructing her girls to hold down the castle while she was away. The three of them had descended into the dungeons, not to be seen again until morning. This left the halls free and roamable for the savvy Lord.

“That’s bullshit and you know it.” Your voice caught his attention. “Oh, shut the fuck up, Marybeth.”

Shrill voices argued back and forth behind the kitchen doors. The sound of muffled giggles fell on his ears; it was an unusual sound within the castle walls. The girls must be relaxed knowing they’re safe from punishment tonight. At least, that’s what they thought.

In a second, the hinges of the door burst off, sending the heavy frame crashing down to the tiled floor. Shrieks came quickly and died on their lips as soon as the girls realized who was there.

“Lord Heisenberg.” One woman bowed her head, concealing something within her hands as she placed them in her lap, clasped tightly together. “Lady Dimitrescu has left for the evening.”

“I know.” His brow raised at the scene set before him. You stood to the rear of the kitchen, clearly irate at something the woman who regarded him had done. Five other women were huddled with the one who spoke, following her lead and averting their gazes. No aroma of cuisine drifted from the empty cauldron, only the stale scent of curing meats clung to the air.

“What’s going on in here?” He looked directly at you from beneath the lid of his hat.

“We were cleaning the kitchen.” The maid spoke through shaking breaths.

After a pensive moment, he waved his hand. “You’re dismissed. Except,” he held his hand at your chest as you attempted to pass, “you.”

The girls stumbled over the door, making quick work of getting back to their quarters and away from the Lord. You listened as the audience of feet trampled away. None of the girls here knew how to walk in heels causing for a rather elephant-like clomping of shoes wherever they went.

“What really happened?”

“Do you care?”

“Not particularly, but color me curious.”

“Don’t get them in trouble.” You demanded through gritted teeth. “I don’t want to deal with the aftermath.”

He chortled. “You seem more afraid of them than you are of me.”

“You’ve not given me a reason to be scared.”

Your back pressed to the wall, a glass chalice fell, shattering against the floor. The lapels of his jacket and dog tags pushed to your chest were still cold from the frosted night air. “Do I need to give you a reason?”

“I just,” embarrassment rose in your cheeks, “would you stop doing this?” There was no budging the man. His strength far outweighed yours, easily acting as if your pushing against his chest was nothing but a soft breeze.

“Doing what?” A smirk grew on his lips. God, he loved this.

“This!” Your clenched fist banged on his chest, not rattling him in the slightest. Droplets of claret liquid ran from your palm to your elbow. “Dammit, Karl. Move.”

The use of his first name was new. A solid hand closed around your wrist, bringing it up to eye level. He tilted back, adjusting his vision. The raise of his brow signaled that he wanted you to open your hand. Complying, you cringed as the reddened skin screamed for relief.

“They did this?”

“It’s no different from the other injuries I’ve gotten here.”

“It’s deep.” He reached into the pocket of his trench coat. “Don’t let anyone know you’ve got this.” A silver tin slipped from his hand to yours, you pried at its ridges with your nail.

Heisenberg disappeared after that, taking off with a dramatic throw of the castle doors as he disappeared into the dense forest. He had given you a tin of salve and a bandage.

“Lady Dimitrescu has requested your presence.”

Bad Bride

Word Count: 7700+

Summary:  A power hungry woman finds herself suddenly having feelings beyond the professional for another gangster while engaged to another man. She decides to form a plan to secure her and her husbands rival, Alfie Solomons', place in the underground of London. She doesn't tell Alfie of her plan to get them everything they could want until her wedding day to his rival. How will he react when she confesses it's been for them the entire time? A fun, smutty little one shot.

It was your wedding day. By all usual circumstances, this should’ve meant it was the happiest day of your life and it wasn’t that you were unhappy. It was just the source of your happiness for the occasion was rather, well, unusual.

You were the picture of a blushing bride, but that was all a facade. You just happened to be very good at pretending to be things you weren’t. Your dress was perfect, your quaint Christian ceremony and lavish reception thanks to your wealthy husband was all a more simple and sane woman could’ve wanted. But you didn’t believe yourself to be either of those things.

You could blame your upbringing, your absent father, your troubled mother who was now wasting away in a sanitarium. But you knew what evil you did. You felt compulsory in your deviant behavior at times, yes, but you were always in control of it.

Growing up with a mentally ill mother and a father that only showed up in the middle of the night, pissed and high on gambling earnings with a birthday present that was 6 months too late had caused you to have to form a lot of layers to protect yourself from the world. With no money, you had to work early in your life. You soon found that money by any legal means was not enough. So you turned to crime. It was simple at first, petty theft and learning to manipulate men. But this set the tone for how you would end up where you were today. A gangsters wife.

Mind you, this wasn’t the first gangster to have proposed to you. You had made your way through them and too easily so. Once one had you, with a simple glance another wanted to steal you away. So you’d made your way up the ladder and here you were. But not for long. Not if your intention to kill your husband went to plan.

You had been rather selfish for most of your adult life, as growing up and fending for yourself can sometimes make you. You were always looking out for number one. Which was always you. With your air of confidence, your wild card behavior, and now your business mindedness as your ownership of a warehouse with a yard by the canal had made you of high interest to smuggling gangsters getting their alcohol to America during the prohibition. You were willing to work with them and with you being a woman, the police simply didn’t suspect you.

This was how you’d met the man that was on your mind on your wedding day, Alfie Solomons. And he was not your husband. He had offered to be at one point and even though it was nowhere near the first time you’d been proposed to it was your favorite out of them all. You had found yourself in a bit of trouble with a rival gang of the Jews. As you went to Alfie for a chat about your problem, as he was the smartest and most clever man you knew, still was, he rather clumsily offered to marry you to protect you. You were surprised. You hadn’t taken Solomons to be the sentimental sort but as your devious self found his eyes soft, his posture unguarded you pried into him with questions. He admitted to having a rather unusual stirring of feelings for you. He admitted he wasn’t happy about it, as these things, these emotions of the heart as he’d put it, they complicate things. And looking back at that moment, you saw things from your time spent together that made sense in a different light than they had. He had favored you over other criminals but in your ego, which was large, you had assumed he knew which side to play for and the best one was yours.

You tell him you’ll think about it. And having never been married up to that point, you needed time to consider all your options for how to deal with your problems. As marriage wasn’t a temporary thing that was easy to get out of. That was unless your husband died.

In a bold meeting with the gangster than you now called your husband, the biggest rival and enemy to Solomons it turned out, you had thrown your cards out on the table, metaphorically, and also yourself at him. With your physical ability, mental capability and emotional control you found the man wrapped around your finger very quickly. He proposed and you did hesitate.

You went to Alfie, told him of the proposition, as you hadn’t yet given him an answer. And that answer was no. You tell him you’re going to marry the other man. He’s furious, even though he tries to hide it. He expresses a softness towards you, something he does not do and you respond to his offer to help you by marrying the man that was an enemy to you both? You saw him pace his office, that handsome and heavy brow low over the eyes that could cut right through you. His plush mouth tight, that silver tongue rubbing over his teeth in thought. He stares at you and neither of you backs down. It wasn’t in either of your natures. As he gives in first with a heavy sigh, he gestures his hand towards the door for you to leave, and you set in motion a plan.

No man had ever interested you much. Not in any meaningful capacity anyway. Some were excellent fucks, some were funny, but none made you feel anything. That night in his office as he fearlessly faced you, never breaking as you hurt him emotionally, you felt something stir inside you. You were used to men reacting when you did these sorts of things. They’d scream or they’d throw things, grab you or try to kill you. He did nothing except stare into you, then let you go. In your experience men weren’t always capable of letting things go. When they felt hurt for whatever reason they lashed out and lost control. You’d never turned down a proposal and come out unscathed. But Alfie stayed cool. He let you go. He didn’t threaten you or his enemy. And ever since that night you had been planning on thanking him by killing his rival and your now husband. You’d have his money, his real estate and without his leadership, for what it was worth, his men would fall apart. This was your plan to take him down. And so far it was going swimmingly.

You sent a bipartisan messenger boy to Alfie, with the request for him to be at a small work shed on the grounds of where you were having your wedding. The boy that came back had no response, saying that the man had looked at it most curiously and sent him away. You didn’t know if he’d be there but you were setting into motion the plans to find out.

After a round of spinning and dancing, you see the sun setting through the windows of the grand hall your reception was being held in. You find your husband and with your usual feminine touch, you sigh and tell him the festivities are just a little too much and if he didn’t mind, might you have a lie down for a moment and eat something so you could recuperate from your excitement. He, of course, agrees, as he did with most things you said.

Skipping away to the dressing room you’d gotten ready in, you lock the door behind you. You open the window and gather your dress, sneaking out into the bushes. Under the cover of a darkening sky, you move through the decorative flora of the gardens and towards the work shed.

You look from around a large manicured bush, seeing Alfie in his usual daunting hat, dark suit, and cane. He has another man with him, and you couldn’t blame him, he had no clue what he was walking into. You sigh and smile, knowing he was smart but was willing to let his curiosity get the better of him. And you could appreciate that sort of combination. A cautiously open mind.

You emerge from behind the plant, your dress gathered in your hands to keep it from the dirt. The hand of the man behind him goes to his gun. Alfie does not flinch.

“What are you doin' 'ere? I’m busy. Shouldn’t you be off show boatin' about with your new husband? Right twat he is.” He declares angrily, a brow quirked and looking away from your wide eyes as you approach him.

“I’m the one who invited you, silly.” you reply with a soft laugh.

“You?”

Your husbands was smooth and plain, a perfectly acceptable face but not much unique about it. Brown hair and brown eyes, thin lips and a chin that was lacking, even if it was minor. He led his men, but he didn't hold a candle to the charisma that Alfie exuded without even trying.

He speaks first. "Let's put ya down, now." he says with clear eyes and a nod. You let out a girlish grunt as one foot hits the ground, his hands warm and firm against your soft thighs, making sure you were stable before they regretfully departed from your skin. He puts himself away into his trousers as you pull up your dress.

"Would you?" you ask softly, the tone and doe eyes so different from just moments before as you turn and hold the high neck of the dress together, asking him to help you.

"'Course." he says in his usual gruff tone, thick square tipped fingers managing with the small pearl buttons.

You turn and dust yourself off, seeing no real damage done to the dress. "Am I decent?" you ask with a tug back of the corner of your mouth.

"Entirely not." he teases, an easier going and charming smile across his face as his fingers tuck loose hairs back into place, a brief dusting of the back of your dress, before a cheeky slap to your bum that makes you giggle. "It's a shame you look so lovely." he says quietly. "Such a waste of beauty on an absolute git." he tsks. "'Spose it's good you got to wear white. Won't get to do that again, eh?" he grins and bends to pick up his cane with a grunt.

"Suppose I'll be getting used to wearing black soon enough." you say with a flirty tone and he recognizes the mischief in your soft face.

"Unless he was already dead, it would not be soon enough." he says and leans in to drive his point home.

To his surprise your hands reach out and take him by his loose collar, pulling him in for a kiss. "I will begin my work tonight." you whisper, nuzzling your nose against his, an affectionate gesture he did not anticipate. "And I'll find a way to be in touch. With him ill we can most likely arrange something to see each other again."

He hears the hopeful tone in your voice and it convinces him you mean what you're saying once agian. "And if not... I look forward to seeing you at the funeral." he grins boyishly and tenderly touches your jaw. "I'll be the one that won't be payin' no mind to the body. Only you." he whispers with a soft press of his lips again. It carries on, a soft back and forth, something gentle to off set the hard of earlier. "You better get goin' now. Else you'll be missed." he says with a sigh, a light tap to your nose before he leans away.

"You're right." you nod and take a deep breath. "I must admit I thought leaving you and going back to my life in there would be easier." you willingly express your fondness for him with a soft smile.

"And I thought watching you leave would be too, love." he purrs back, making your stomach flutter.

"Until next time?" you say with a more playful smirk.

"Until then." he nods, stepping away from you.

"I'll be thinking of you, Alfie." you say softly, silhouetted in the doorway to the shed.

"I know." he grins, a low chuckle rumbling out across the space between you. "And I you, love. Now go, pet." he says with a shooing motion of his hand.

With one final up and down of him with your eyes, your hitch up your dress and move back to the dressing room. You climb in the window, shut it, and rest on the bed for a moment before freshening up.

"Miss?" you hear after a knock at the door after you'd been staring out the window for a moment. "Your husband wanted me to come check on you. Are you unwell?"

"I believe too much champagne was the culprit." you say with a feminine lilt you were used to performing.

"Do you require anything?"

"No." you say with a sigh. "I'll be out to get him shortly." you say with a smirk.

Solace Wright just wants to remove herself from her overbearing job and find some genuine joy in her life on her own terms. She didn't exactly expect to land in South Korea to begin making an acclaimed name for herself, and she definitely didn't expect to fall so easily in love. She knows what she came to do and isn't exactly fond of having such a large distraction, but her heart softens without her permission and leads her to experience things she never imagined for herself.

Did she want this? No. Will she stay anyway? Yes.

She may have bitten off more than she can chew.

Past.

HOSEOK hated the heat. He hated L.A too. He loathed the bright, smoldering heat that made him have nightmares of lava eating away at skin before he fell asleep; accompanied by the restless sounds and people that enshroud him everywhere he seemed to turn. And if one more droplet of sweat dared to drip down his face one more time, he'd hop on the fastest plane to Korea within the next hour. 

The moment his skin made contact with the summer sun here, he immediately regretted even coming. Why his father sent him out of all the other nice, heat tolerant people he has employed at his aquarium was beyond him. Beyond him. Literally. He knew little english, despised American food, and random foreigners that couldn't mind their business, so this was the worst job his dad could possibly give him.

The only liable reason he can come up with is that his father trusted him. Which was kind of a given, seeing as he was the only child he had that considered marine biology as a career path. He was also his dad's only child, so there was that aspect too. Hoseok was being sent to one of the biggest sea life aquariums in Los Angeles to sign literally one slip of paper and shake some probably cold hands just to confirm the conversion of the aquarium into the Jung corporation, due to horrible reviews on the well-being of their sea life, and poor treatment of their customers — and employees. 

So naturally, sales dropped, and prices ran cheaper, but people never seemed to want to visit anymore. Hearing about their children's favorite killer whale dying the day after the family went to visit wasn't exactly the best look . . . at all.

His father, noting that every other company tied within the U.S simply refused to lend a helping hand, stepped in on his own. Being a businessman was his best attribute; this simple encounter alone was going to add millions to his company, evidently putting himself even more on the top of the marine world than he was already. He'd do his best to add more revenue to the aquarium under his ownership; since all of the 4 aquariums he owned in South Korea were healthily successful, he only expected the same outcome for the one here; but that would take time. A very long time.

That was great and all, but did it require a whole suit and tie ensemble? In black? He almost wants to cry, but for one: he'll for sure taste the salt in his tears and it's too hot for that, and for two: he's not trying to explain to an American the reasoning behind his tears in his kindergarten level English on this bus that was going way too fast for his liking. So no crying. He could sit and be pissed though, so that's exactly what he does.

It takes a good forty-five minutes to get to his hotel, just to fumble with his key to his room when it was handed to him, lug his too-heavy-for-a-week-stay suitcase into his room, and eventually fall into some strangely comfortable sheets and fall into the arms of a power nap. Jet-lag was yet another thing that Jung Hoseok hated, and he refused to let it hinder the pace at which he could actually leave this place. He had a big day tomorrow.

Hoseok knows that the sun is necessary for life and energy and whatever else, but waking up to it shining directly into his irises wasn't the plan. The universe just seemed to genuinely enjoy messing those up though, so who can really say that this wasn't expected anyway? The meeting was at 10, so he got up at 7, quickly regretting that decision as well; U.S time and Korean time were sworn enemies. But Hoseok prevails and tries his best: studying and trying to absorb every English word he could in the textbook he brought, he even got the mobile app so that his phone could speak to him while he fumbled with his tie. He practiced masking his accent — and evidently failed, but that's okay — and eventually said fuck it, grabbed his suitcase, and left his hotel room.

During the bus ride to the aquarium, he tries to mask his nervousness by continuing to study and attempting to make somewhat of a script for the meeting he had later. He tries to answer in his head any question that could possibly be asked — which shouldn't be many — until he's memorized just enough to get by. He's almost positive that he'll stutter more than necessary and say something incorrectly by default but he decided that was the best he could do.

After a long and almost unbearably bumpy bus ride, he finally arrived at the aquarium, and when he heard about the decrease in visitors, he didn't think it would've been this much. The aquarium was open for sure, but without looking inside, you would've thought it was during closing hours. No one was even remotely interested in the activities occurring outside; which was saying something, because it was a whopping 102 degrees today. The only people actually outside where the employees with the animals, feeding and bathing their assigned sea life.

The aquarium was huge. 2 long pillars held the building up from the sides, accompanied by the various games and activities surrounding it. An array of ticket booths stood outside as well, with less than about 15-20 pedestrians per line. Hoseok felt like he was at the entrance of a movie theater, much less a famous aquarium. Hoseok literally stops in his tracks; just standing to take it all in. admittedly, his father's aquariums were better, but this one was still something to admire. A shame, it was that it wasn't selling well. He knew his dad would fix that though.

As he entered the large building, he immediately makes eye contact with one too many sea creatures; they seem to literally stop and peer at what he's doing and silently ask why. His footsteps falter at his paranoia; was he serious right now?

Let's not make this visit longer than it has to be, Hoseok, he thinks to himself. Please don't.

Hoseok picks his head up, wipes his sweat with the sleeve of his blazer — unprofessional, but he doesn't care — and eventually just takes the jacket off. He wouldn't be forced to suffer anymore because he really couldn't feel the aquarium's supposed "air conditioning" at all. After doing this, he ignores the scrutinizing looks from the fish surrounding him, and begins his quest for the administrative's office to meet with the CEO. Not even five steps are completely taken before he's almost ran over by a woman with a box that definitely had no chance of lasting long in her hands. Way to not make this visit longer, huh?

The collision is heavy, but more so on his part; she actually remained standing, and the sound Hoseok made at his fall was too loud to simply apologize and not worry about potential injuries. 

"Oh my God!” The woman exclaimed. “I'm so sorry-"

The box she held is safely placed on the ground before she reaches out to help pull her victim up — he hadn't even attempted getting up, but sprung up easily with her help. 

"Thanks," he grunted, noting at how soft her hands were, and peeking at her white lab coat. Her eyes were a wide mahogany, matching her skin, and her hair was kept in a high and unruly bun. He decided that he had been irritated enough since he got here, and getting angry — angrier — would only slow him down. 

"I'm fine," he inwardly grimaced at how his voice sounded, "I, uh. I think."

She kept rumbling off with apologies, because what a great way to end her last day here. 

"I'm so, so, sorry! I was just moving out from my room and you were walking in front of my office and—" she blinked rapidly, taking in his appearance and then really looking for injuries, "wait, you look important, a-are you sure you're okay?" Her hands roamed his shoulders, head, and arms before he interrupted her with an embarrassed cough.

"Um." Immediately her hands left his arms, shooting behind her back and interlocking in embarrassment. She couldn't help it, he wore more than her rent and she was not about to get sued today. He felt his cheeks grow hot at her actions; he definitely wasn't used to that. He cleared his throat, loosening the collar of his shirt — was it hot in here? Significantly hotter than usual?

Eventually finding his composure, he directed his speech to her as carefully as he could. "You are okay." Her eyes met up to his, her heart was pounding too damn hard for a Tuesday morning. "Sorry, uh, my English isn't very good — I'm Korean. I'm trying though."

Her brows rose, and Hoseok had to stop himself from thinking the worst before she spoke, "Oh really? I studied marine biology in college, with Korean as my minor, I know the language, if that's easier for you?" She reached down and struggled to pick up her box completely; but Hoseok noticed and helped her to stand.

He couldn't even completely understand what she said, but he heard Korean and easier and put two and two together. 

"Really? Yes!" he coughed, lowering his voice, "Ahem. Please. I have a meeting with your Ceo and I'm not sure how far I'll get." Pleading eyes bore into hers, trying to get his point across.

"I'm Jung Hoseok, by the way," he said, before she could reject him.

The woman's hands wrapped over the box tightly, and her lips turn to blow escaped hairs from in front of her eyes. Noting that he mentioned that Korean would be easier, she quickly remembered the honorifics. 

"Hi Hoseok. I'm Solace. So, you need a translator?" She finally settled her box firmly in her hands and looked at him expectedly.

Solace. It was a beautiful name, it swelled nicely under his tongue when he repeated it. Her Korean was good; her accent was obviously apparent, but still understandable. "Yes," Hoseok answers hurriedly, "If you're not too busy."

Solace shook her head, "No it's fine, today was my last day anyway. Let me run this box to my car really quickly and I'll be right back." Hoseok can barely respond with his gratitude before her heels find their speed and she leaves the building.

When she returned, she also had to direct him to the administrative's office as well, he didn't exactly have a directory to the aquarium. While she was showing him the way, Hoseok had the opportunity to observe the aquarium fully; dwelling on how his father could fix this, and tweak that. And that was all before they even got to an elevator.

He tried small talk too. She was granting him a favor, so the least he could do was get to know her a little. Random questions that popped into his mind, he wanted them answered. He was still in need of a distraction; nerves were never something to be messed with.

"So," he raised his voice as he stepped in the elevator beside her, "did you quit? Is- is that why it's your last day? Or -" his eyes widened with interest, "were you fired?" 

He saw her face turn to him quizzically, she couldn't possibly figure out how that was any of his business, but she let it slide. She clicked the circular 5 button for the fifth floor, and the elevator ascended upwards.

"No, not fired. I quit." she looked down at her fingers, "the reviews written about poor employee service weren't wrong."

"Oh."

Hoseok nodded, not exactly shocked by her answer; it only added to the things his dad could fix once he signed the contract. And maybe it was the close proximity of the elevator, but Hoseok knew the scent of a mango when he smelled it. There was something else in the air too — something tropical.

He didn't know if it was perfume or what, it just smelled amazing. So amazing that his body made decisions he probably shouldn't have; like leaning in towards the area of the smell — which was Solace. He only sacrificed a small sniff, but it was one sniff too many apparently — she tensed up immediately. Did he just? She didn't even see him do it; her attention was on the elevator door waiting to open.

Hoseok hasn't noticed her noticing him, and moved back to where he originally stood, unbothered. He realized that it was her hair that smelled as nice as it did, a dash of coconut and hibiscus scents accompanied the mango too; adding a nice, beachy smell. But Solace noticed, and didn't exactly know how to react either. Her head turned to him swiftly, an amused but weary expression residing in her eyebrow arch and smirking lips. 

“Did you just smell me?"

Hoseok — looking embarrassed as ever and face so red he almost looks sick — Seriously debates acting as if her Korean was so accented he couldn't understand her. Too late for that, of course; but the suggestion still ran through his mind. He wonders if he should just lie, claim she was hearing things, but that would get him nowhere.

"I-I'm sorry! Something just smelled really good so I just-" his ears burn even more at the sound of her small laughter, she reached her hand to cover her smile.

"It's fine," she giggled some more, "does my hair smell that good?" Hoseok releases the breath he didn't realize he was holding when the elevator finally releases an anticipated ding and the doors separate from each other.

Solace disregards Hoseok’s small yes as an answer, and gracefully leads him to the Ceo's door. A closed door with a frosted window awaited Hoseok, who just stood in front of it beside her, frozen. Solace looked to him expectantly, but halted, realizing how nervous this guy really was. When she thought about it, she'd act just like him, let the roles be reversed. So reassuringly, she placed her hand on his shoulder, waiting until he turned to her.

"I got you, Hoseok. You've got this." She smiled, and Hoseok gulped. How embarrassing, Hoseok, really.

"Thanks," he said, before lifting his hand to knock.

"You did so good!" Solace smiled at him from across the dining booth. She was right; he greeted the Ceo and his associates with ease, Solace had to help him with just a few things. And after he signed the few documents he needed to, he took her out for lunch as an expression of his gratitude. And solace never says no to free food, so she happily obliged.

He had asked her what she wanted, so she went to the nearest restaurant that had chicken and waffles; she had been craving them, and Hoseok never had them. So she was in front of him now, indulging in her delicious chicken and dipping her waffles in maple syrup alongside it. Hoseok was watching what she was doing, trying to replicate her etiquette. He blushed for the nth time that day, hearing her bellows of praise. He wasn't complaining, though.

"Thank you," he beamed. "You were a really big help, I'm happy you were there today." He finally tasted his chicken with a syrupy waffle, and Solace watches his eyes widen with astonishment — that's almost everyone's reaction to the treat. 

"Wow."

Solace looked knowingly back at her own plate. "I know."

After Hoseok drew himself back from waffle heaven, he asked curiously, "Wait, so where do you go now? Since it was your last day. Do you have like, a backup job? Something you're interested in?" He looked back at his plate, popping a piece of chicken in his mouth.

Solace chewed slowly, heeding his words while relishing in the simple calamity of the restaurant: the clinking plates and glasses, loud and quieted voices. This was a question she didn't necessarily have an answer to, so she silently searched for some sort of answer to tie him over.

She looked back up and him, frowning a little. "No, not really. I guess I'll just stay with my stepmom for a minute — like, literally a minute, the woman hates me — until I find something . . . else." She shied her face from Hoseok's worried gaze. She just couldn't stay at that aquarium, it payed fine enough, but damn, if it wasn't tiring.

Hoseok swallowed slowly after hearing what solace said about her job, and noting how uncomfortable she was talking about it. Great going, man. A thought crossed his mind — granted, it was a crazy, stupid thought, but a thought nonetheless — that consisted of inviting solace to her dad's aquarium back home.

He almost facepalms just for thinking it. In what world would that make sense? He finally removes it from his train of thought completely, but he sees her expression as she fell silent and looked outside the window beside her. She looked lonely, for a moment, although he was right there in front of her. He wished he couldn't relate so well. Maybe it would've kept his mouth from rambling off.

"You- you know, my dad just had a new aquarium built in the last, like six months. Since it's so new, we're a little short on employees, so if you want — since, you know you're fluent and all —" he gulps seeing her eyes widen, and her body suddenly becoming alert.

"Really?" Hoseok really wished he was kidding when he said she was fluent, just the way she said that one word made her sound like a native. "You are? I mean, it's a little far-fetched, but dammit I'll take just about anything." And he believes her, her heart had amplified it's beating, her excitement from his words noticeable like a star upon obsidian.

His face is burning roses, but his cheekbones raise in a smile; he wasn't lying, he just didn't even know she'd agree so fast — was she thinking this through at all?

No, just like your stupid ass, Hoseok.

Hoseok finds relief in the ice water that was placed next to him, he really couldn't let her down now. finally finding a voice, he breathes, "You sure about that? It might take a little while, but i'll see about getting you down there a little quicker. perks of being the director's son, heh. And you’re a nice enough girl." It was the least he could do. Literally. He won't allow himself to offer anything else.

Solace clutches her lab coat she didn't take off harshly, barely even believing his words. It would take a while, and who knows how long she'll actually be down there for? If she actually got the job? But she knew she wouldn't exactly miss being here. She wouldn't miss her stepmom, she wouldn't miss the loud, bustling people in L.A, and she definitely wouldn't miss that job. The only thing she might actually miss was these damn chicken and waffles. And she'd get to travel. The pros outweighed the cons, to her.

“It does sound nice, but where would I even stay? I’d be broke as soon as I got there," she said, sadly biting her nails.

He knew the answer a little too quickly. "I'm friends with a landlord in the heart of busan, right next to the beach. It's nice. Cheaper than most. I can’t promise anything, but maybe I could persuade him to lend you a room. If you'd like."

Music to her ears. "I'll take it."

Hello again! As I edit and prepare for the newer chapters of Fools, I decided to drop this one to hold you guys over. This is a Jimin fic, but I decided to start it off from Hoseok’s standpoint, because this is how Jimin and Solace’s stories begin, and that’s with Hoseok. At the beginning you will see the chapters fluctuate between the past and the present until they eventually meet up. I hope it’s not too confusing, but my inbox is always open if it is! As mentioned above, this story deals heavily with the themes of mental illnesses, but specifically borderline personality disorder, aka bpd. Jimin is the character with this disorder, so please be aware of that as you continue to read. I also want to point out that I absolutely do not condone romanticizing mental illnesses, so be assured that none of that will be included here. Tea

The one where Harry is woefully ill prepared for breakfast. Later, Lenin brings H a birthday gift only to find him already celebrating with someone else. (fluff turned relationship angst) (Playboy!Harry)

Harry was awoken to the sound of gentle rustling. He reached out for Lenin but her side of the bed was cold and empty. It must’ve been before 7, the sun wasn’t even out yet. Far too early for him to be without a bedmate. And on his birthday, no less. He pushed up from the bed to survey the dark room, stretching out in the process. She was easy enough to spot, with her mobile light illuminating her path. Harry turned to lay down on his back, propped up against the pillows. He watched her tip toe across the room collecting her things. “Were you even going to wake me?” he startled her, jumping in place at his words. “Or were you just going to leave me like some harlot?” That earned him an eye roll, but the hint of a smile tugging at her pillowy lips let him know she wasn’t too annoyed.

“I didn’t want to wake you.” she whispered, coming over to him to perch herself on the side of the bed and place a chaste good morning kiss on his cheek. “I have to work.” He remembered. That didn't mean he liked it anymore than he did when she originally told him.

“But it’s m’ birthday.” he pouted, taking her hand in his. He missed her skin already, hidden beneath her long sleeved shirt and dark jeans.

“Don’t make me feel worse!” she whined back.

He didn’t want her feeling bad, as much as he joked. “’m only joking.” he assured her.  “Do ya have time for breakfast at least? I could whip us up some scramble.” he suggested, running a hand through his unruly locks.

“Shouldn’t I be making you breakfast, Birthday boy?” she smiled. Harry couldn’t lie, he was quite liking this special birthday treatment. Midnight handy, an offer to make breakfast, he could only imagine what else she might have in store for him tonight. But before his mind could wonder too far, he caught himself.

“Maybe, but I'm host. So I must insist.” Harry threw the covers off of him and gently scooted Lenin off the bed before hopping out himself. “Plus I make a mean egg.” He held a hand out for her.

Lenin looked at the time on her mobile, “It’ll have to be quick.”

“Oh, I can be fast.” Harry didn’t like the way that sounded as soon as it left his mouth. “Er- with the eggs  I can be quick with the eggs.” he should really stop talking. “It doesn’t take long to cook them.” Lenin just looked on with an raised brow and a smile on her face, as amused as ever by him. That fact helped lessened his chagrin. He’d gladly make a fool of himself if it made her smile or laugh.

He went to lead her out of the room when but stopped when she didn't move. He looked back to her expectantly. “Aren’t you forgetting something, Styles?” Harry didn't know what she could possibly be referring to. They were only going to the kitchen, what was there to forget? She just sort of gawked at him, “Are you going to put on trousers?”

Harry couldn’t hide his goofy grin. “I wasn’t planning on it, lovey.” It was the sort of thing he normally wouldn’t think twice about. “’t’s only m’ kitchen.”

“...But you want to cook?” she asked. “That’s like, a safety hazard, babe.” Harry quite liked when she used pet names with him, though she was usually more careful, the occasional ‘babe’ only slipping through after a few drinks or a hit off whatever joint was being passed around. He tried not to read too much into the casual use of it now.

“I’ll be fine.” he assured her. But the way she bit at her bottom left led him to believe she was still genuinely concerned. “Besides, theres an apron if need be.” he held a hand out to her again, fingers wiggling. “Come on.” She accepted and he led her the way down the hall to the kitchen.

“Wait here,” Harry let her hand go when they entered the kitchen. He ducked down to open the drawer where he kept the tea towels, and in the very back, he found a little waist apron. He popped back up with his found treasure in hand raised above his head triumphantly. He let it unfold in his hand and tied it around his waist, first ‘round back, then back to the front to tie it, just as he used to do it when he worked in the bakery. “There.” Lenin laughed openly at his stance, bare chest puffed out and hand on his hips. God, he loved that sound. And the way she covered her mouth far too late to effectively hold back her giggles.

He wasn’t thinking when he left his spot in the middle of the kitchen to give Lenin a proper kiss. It just felt right. She seemed to think so too, the way she melted into him. One hand tangled itself in her long locks and the other found its way into her back jean pocket. He was surprised when she didn’t swat his hands away like usual. One kiss after another, pulling her impossibly closer with each peck. She felt so good against him, so warm. He needed to stop, before his brain switched off completely.

“I’ll get the eggs.” Harry announced when they finally pulled away from each other.

“I can make the tea.” Lenin declared slowly, a bit dazed. Harry couldn’t help but be a little chuffed about that. Lenin fetched the kettle from the stove top and skipped to the sink to fill it. She absentmindedly started to hum over the tap, body gently swaying with the improvised tune. Harry momentarily forgot the task at hand, enamored with her again. She carried the kettle back to the stove hob and turned it on. “...Where might I find the tea?” she spun around the kitchen on her heels and Harry was broken from his reverie.

Harry opened the refrigerator only to see their food selection was limited as well. He kept an eye on Lenin in his peripheral. He reckoned from her frown her findings weren't too prosperous either. “You don't have tea?” she whispered the words as if they were blasphemous. Harry was more of a coffee person, but he knew he'd be picking some up after this. She wouldn’t be without again.

“No eggs, either, I'm afraid.” he admitted sheepishly, closing the refrigerator. Harry never bothered much with groceries considering how much he was actually home. Everything would go bad before he could get to it. “’m sorry.” Usually it was only an inconvenience to him. This was embarrassing. “I can order something here.” He knew that was a long shot with her tight schedule but he had to at least offer.

“Don’t worry about me, I can grab something from catering.” Lenin assured him. “But what about you?”

Eating out and take-away had become more of a staple in his life than he would care to admit. But just as he struggled for an answer, he eyed a bowl of green apples on his table. Some of the only food in the house, he had sent his assistant out for a few things, fresh fruit he knew he’d eat included. He reached out to grab one and took a bite, making a show of his breakfast.

Harry wiped the natural juice of the fruit that dribbled down his chin and swore he caught Lenin staring at his mouth as he did so, the unmistakable look of lust in her eyes. The same look from last night. He couldn’t forget it so he was sure when he saw it again as he licked his lips clean. “You alright?” he smirked.

Her eyes snapped back to his, “Yeah!” his smirk grew when he saw a blush creep up her cheeks. What he wold give to know where her mind just was. “I’m going to be late.” Convenient. She had enough time for breakfast not a moment ago and now she was running out on him. “Have a good day, Harry!”

“I’ll see you tonight, yeah?” he called out after her.

“Mhm.” Lenin nodded before she exited the room, “Happy Birthday!” she shouted from the hall. The front door closing let him know he was alone again.  

The door swung open, “Happy Birthday to you,” Lenin sang, stood on the porch, single cupcake in hand. It had a candle lit and everything. A smile split across his face upon seeing her again. “Happy Birthday to you.” His own little Marilyn crooning for him. She didn’t finish the song though, and Harry reckoned it was because of the extra person that came to stand in the doorway with him.

“Oh, that’s so cute!” Justina squealed from her place at his side. “Is it from Sprinkles?” Harry was mildly annoyed with his friend. It wasn’t her fault, it just felt as though she was intruding on something that was meant to be just the two of them.

Lenin didn’t miss a beat. “Yes! Good eye!” Her smile was radiant, but too rehearsed. It was the same one she wore on red carpets and other public events. The one she could hold for hours. Expect it didn’t meet her eyes like usual. She was not happy and Harry felt terrible.

Harry leaned forward and blew it out, wishing to spend the rest of the day with his sweet girl. “Thank you, love.” He then placed a kiss on Lenin’s cheek. She was such a good girl. Far better than he deserved right now. “I thought you were working today?”  

“I am. I just- I wanted to make sure you got this.” Lenin handed him the cupcake then leant behind one of the big planters on his porch. She produced a small decorative gift bag with a balloon attached. Lenin had gone out of her way to make their own little party for two. Expect there were three. Harry tried to swallow back the guilt but the knot in his throat was growing. 

“You didn’t have to get me anything.” she had already done more than enough to make it a birthday he would remember.

“It’s nothing much, really.” Lenin insisted. But the fact that she thought to pick anything up for him at all was a gift unto itself.

“You should open it, babe!” Justina encouraged, irritating him further.

“Would you come in at least?” Harry invited Lenin in, not wanting her standing out on his front porch for too long.

“Yeah! I was just making Har lunch. We have more than enough.” Justina chimed in. It made Harry cringe, knowing how it probably sounded to Lenin. Knowing how it all sounded to Lenin. He was hearing it as she was. And couldn’t say anything, because it was all true.

It made him smile. A small chuckle left him as he remembered their morning together fondly, “Thank you.” he bowed his head.

“Wait.” Harry called after her. “I’ll walk you to your car.” He jogged to catch up to her. She didn’t slow. “Hey,” he reached out and grabbed her elbow. “Hey. Thank you, really.”

“You know you're always welcome here.” She wouldn’t look at him, rather busying herself with her key fob. He needed to say something to fix this. “Hey, I’m sorry. yeah?” He meant it. He never ever meant to hurt Lenin.

“Don't be.” she shrugged, “You haven’t done anything wrong.” He knew that. They weren’t in a relationship. They were just friends. Then why did he feel so shit?

“I must’ve if you’re upset.” he stared intently at her.

“I- really need to be going.”

“Don’t do that. Don’t leave upset.” He hated to think of that. He would’ve tried harder, to have her stay if she wasn’t working. 

“I’m not.” she lied. But he didn’t push it. They could talk later.

“I’ll see you tonight, yeah?” the car beeped unlocked and Harry got the door for her.

“I’m actually flying out in a few hours.” Lenin got into her car and waited expectantly for Harry to close it behind her, which he did after a beat.

Her window was down so they could continue their conversation. “No! You have to come!” he leaned down to her window. “I’ll have no fun without you.” She had confirmed just this morning! Either she had double booked- which was unlike her- or she was just making something up. Harry reckoned it was the latter, and had an even stronger suspicion it had something to do with the blonde in his house at that very moment.

“I’m sure you’ll manage.” She still wouldn’t look at him. Staring straight through her windshield instead.

“Are you back this week? Maybe we could celebrate later.” he offered, still hanging on her door.

“Any reason to continue the festivities, hm?” she was still teasing him, so that must’ve been a good sign. He wasn’t completely out of her good graces.

He shrugged his shoulders. “Could be fun. With you. Pleeease.”

“I don’t know, Harry.” she was short with him this time. She was usually on top off her schedule, another indicator she was fibbing. She was so mad, he could tell. But she wasn’t saying anything. She was absolutely maddening.

“Be safe. Traveling.” He stepped away from the car.

“Happy Birthday, Harry.”

Harry texted her that night at the party. And after the party. When he got no response back, he called. No answer either. With her voicemail box full. Curiosity got the best of him by the end of the week, resulting in him preforming the almost treasonous act of googling her. She was fine, of course. Attending one of Europes’ Fashion Weeks. Sitting in the front row of every important show and staying out late after. He attempted to get ahold of her a few more times to no avail.

this is a diary post that talks about illness and has some mentions of bad eating habits. ik readmores don't always work on mobile so i just wanted to warn y'all to feel free to scroll past

i haven't been feeling very well lately, both physically and mentally. i feel nauseated and tired almost constantly, and disoriented regularly. at night i feel lethargic and sick and confused. sometimes i am dizzy for no reason. i often feel feverish but i don't have a fever. i sleep poorly and wake up miserable, sweaty, and utterly exhausted. this is a gross thing: the last couple weeks my snot has been clumpy and sticky and traced with blood. a lot of the time when i go to bed i take some tums just preemptively so i am not kept awake with nausea. i am sad and unmotivated and at work i often experience bouts of intense anger and frustration. my mom has been really sick lately and in general i don't think it's affecting me but i'm showing some avoidant tendencies and get very upset very quickly if i think too long about it. my self talk is very negative. i feel isolated and lonely. i get sad admitting that to myself. my hair is dry and thinning out.

and last night i would have sworn i had a heart attack. my right arm was hurting suddenly for some reason, inside the center of it like in the crook of my elbow. i was rubbing it and mostly ignoring it when the right side of my chest started to hurt? incessantly like hard, aching pressure. it lasted for a while, so after about half an hour i started googling symptoms of a heart attack, because i know women show symptoms differently, but i didn't know specifics? a lot of the results mentioned pain that started in the center of the chest though, and sweats and having a hard time breathing, breathing like you're out of breath. i was thinking, "that's not what i'm having, so it's probably just a panic attack," but i hadn't been triggered by anything, and i didn't feel panicked; and as time went on the pain moved to the middle of my chest and up into my throat a little. i thought maybe it was heartburn but i had taken my preemptive tums earlier? i also felt nauseated despite that. it did start to feel like a heavy weight on my chest, like it was taking effort to breathe. i started to get a little scared and was weighing the possibility of going to urgent care or calling a nurse hotline but i really didn't want to be on the phone and i extra don't have the time or the money to go to the er.

today was truck day and i didn't want to be poorly rested. and you know what would happen if i went to the hospital. i'd be there for hours answering questions, filling out forms, and waiting, and they'd do a bunch of tests and come out inconclusive, and then i'd be out a thousand dollars, embarrassed, and nowhere. i literally physically do not possess the funds for that. and at any rate i wear a fitbit and my heart rate was normal. so i laid in bed for a couple hours waiting for it to go away and eventually it eased enough that i fell asleep with the light on. i was dizzy and disoriented when i woke up after having some strange nightmares, and i thought i must have had very little sleep, but my fitbit reported that i got my typical six hours, so maybe my alarm just went off in the middle of a rem cycle or something. i don't understand circadian rhythms.

i had a terrible terrible headache tonight but i took some acetametaphine and then had a late dinner in case the medicine hurt my stomach. i hadn't eaten today, i realized. so i'm thinking all these ailments can probably be attributed to stress and not eating and sleeping healthy like i should, but i just seem to avoid bedtime like the plague. i keep thinking i shouldn't sleep yet because i have schoolwork but then i don't do any schoolwork, i just sit around for hours and hours watching the clock tick by. i have an appointment to see my psych in a couple weeks and i think i just need to tough it out until i can see her and reevaluate my meds.

but in general i don't feel well. at the same time, rehashing this seems pointless and whiny. i constantly tell myself, particularly at work, that i'm being a dramatic baby and other people are ACTUALLY sick and i have to suck it up and work. i cant stop myself from dwelling on it all. i cant concentrate on anything but wallowing. i constantly have a song stuck in my head and i've had that for longer than i can remember, so it mostly doesn't bother me. tonight it's that "something just like this" coldplay song. some of my fingernails grow faster than the others. my feet are ice cold and the rest of my body is fine. i feel like i am running out of time in all aspects of my life. i am ALWAYS late to work. i forget to take my 30 minute break more often than not.

Health and Self Care During Covid-19 Quarantine

There is way too much misinformation floating around about Covid-19 or Coronavirus. Misinformation is incredibly dangerous because it mixes in with and can easily drown out facts that could save lives. So, I talked to my friend, a Navy Veteran and healthcare professional, Lauren DiPietro MSN, RN to help sift through the bullshit so that we can be armed with the facts to better protect ourselves, our family, friends, fellow human beings, and our family animals.

Interview with Lauren DiPietro

GNL Magazine: Hi Lauren. There’s a lot of misinformation floating out there among the facts. I'm hoping you can help us clear up some of the misconceptions by answering a few questions.

Lauren: I’m ready when you are.

GNL: There are people saying that Covid-19 is just like a seasonal flu or an upper respiratory infection. Can you tell us what Covid-19 is?

Lauren: COVID-19 at first, was deemed to be similar to the Flu by many healthcare professionals. However, it seemed to be quickly discovered that COVID-19 was more similar to when the Spanish flu hit in 1918. Our bodies weren't prepared for it so to speak, since it was such an unusual strain of influenza. COVID-19 is a type of strain from the Coronavirus. The corona viruses have been around for centuries though.

GNL: What are the symptoms of Covid-19 and how is it treated?

Lauren: Symptoms are many, but the main ones to look for are fever, shortness of breath, and cough. Sore throat, fatigue, general malaise, and difficulty breathing are also symptoms.

GNL: When should someone seek medical attention for it?

Lauren: You want to treat the symptoms and quarantine yourself from others for 14 days. You can be sick and show no signs of the illness from 1-14 days though. You want to seek medical attention if you know you were exposed, have trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, or bluish lips or face-- these are the symptoms per the CDC to go seek medical attention for.

Remember if you think you should be tested or think you are displaying sign/symptoms call your PCP (Primary Care Provider) first. Don't just show up.

GNL: If you have to go outside, what type of PPE (personal protective equipment) gear would you recommend?

Lauren: The type of PPE you should use in public is a very hot topic and honestly the only thing that works per the CDC is an N95 mask. However, because those are in such low supply they are kind of grasping at straws to give best ideas (not necessarily best practice).

The new recommendation is a cloth mask (which needs to be kept in a paper bag for 24 hours before you wear it after it has been worn) and gloves. Best practice is to continue to wash your hands with soap and water. Use antibacterial soap. Only use hand sanitizer 3 times before you need to use soap and water again. Wash hands for 20-30 seconds, and remember to get your thumbs and nails too.

Learn how to properly put on and take off gloves if you are using them. If you are around people with Covid or out in the general public, when you return home strip at the door (including shoes) and put your clothes in the washer with hot water when you return home. Change gloves frequently!!! Don't touch your face. If you use a mask make sure you cover your nose and mouth.

GNL: How are you staying protected during Covid-19?

Lauren: I'm staying protected by staying home as we all should. I go out for groceries which I do curbside pick up at Kroger. If they don't have what i need [I run into] to the actual store and while there I don’t wear PPE, but I do use sanitzer as soon as I get back in the car and I wipe down my steering wheel, gear shift, turn signal, door handle, and phone down with a Clorox wipe. I then wash my hands when i get home.

I also don't keep the plastic bags currently. There is a great video put out by a physician on how to properly unload your groceries during this time and I follow that currently.

GNL: How do you practice self care adequately during this quarantine?

Lauren: Self care is going to be different for everyone. However, for me I am doing a gratitude journal daily, writing my goals down for the year daily, taking a few times a day (I have a reminder in my phone) to deep breathe, and I am doing positive affirmations.

I am also taking some time away from social media to get away from the negativity. I turned off the news app on my phone since they love to spread fear and panic. I also take more time to do my usual self care- quiet time and baths and my favorite show at night.

GNL: Is there anything else we should know or be doing? Any words of advice?

Lauren: We should all stop hoarding- it does nothing- literally nothing! We should buy for 2 weeks at a time for all things. Following hand washing, good hygiene, and following current CDC guidelines. STAY HOME!

The sooner we listen and abide by recommendations, the sooner this ends. I don't want people to get the idea that a cloth mask is going to work 100%. This isn't scientifically tested and is giving people a false sense of security. If you look on the CDC website it even says that the N95 mask is the only thing that is approved for this, but that anything at this point being used will be slightly better than nothing. So please don't take one pair of gloves and a mask as a sense of security that all is well and you can run amok outside again.

Doing your best to stay healthy during this time- so eating well and moving your body. Go for a walk or run, but keep 10 feet away from people on the trails/street. Be kind to others, we are all struggling right now. And if you can support local if they deliver, do it! This isn't a battle that can be fought by soldiers, this is a battle that WE have to fight as individuals. So we need to do our part, own it and be accountable for it!

If I can find insurance that would cover me in Canada I could maintain registration in Calif. Does anyone know about this? I want to get life insurance, but I am not sure whhich type of insurance I should get. I have done lots of research and majority of the research tells me to get term life insurance, but I am still confused to why. Here is a little about me: 30 years old, married, and have a baby. Non-smoker, and overall healthy, minus some arthritis. My first thought is to get whole life insurance because it definitely covers my family if I pass away when I am a lot older. However, I then hear that whole life is not a great investment - too expensive and lot of cost/fees involved, you don't really know how much of your premiums are going into your insurance and how much is going into the savings where the company invest the money. After hearing that, I think well term isn't so bad then. I get a lower premium for the same amount of life insurance. But then, I know term insurance only last a limited time. I see 30 years usually being the longest term life insurance. Well 30 years from now (considering nothing happens to me in the next 30 years), I will only be 60. That is still pretty young and then I wil have to renew my term insurance, but at 60, my premium will be a lot more than it would be right now. SO as you can see, I am at a lost and have no clue what to do. I would like some opinions, feedback, suggestions, etc, that would be much appreciated. Thousands of Canadians languish in limbo as they wait for long-term care

HALIFAX —  Clarence Young sits silently in a wheelchair in the 8th floor hallway of Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre Infirmary Building. Occasionally, a nurse will smile or bring him lunch on a tray but, for the most part, he is invisible.

Mr. Young, 94, has Parkinson’s disease. He was admitted to hospital June 12, after he collapsed at home. He had pneumonia, which was treated and, a few days later, he was discharged – at least technically.

Mr. Young’s spouse is not well enough to care for him at home, and he ended up on a waiting list for long-term care.

So here he sits, by default, living in a hospital ward dedicated to acutely ill patients.

“It breaks my heart to see dad like this,” says his daughter, Brenda Joudrey. “Imagine just sitting in a hospital all day with nothing to do. That’s not a life; it’s barely an existence.”

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, there were, at last count, 6,671 patients in Canada listed as “alternate level of care,” or ALC, an Orwellian euphemism used to describe patients stuck in this care limbo – too well to be in hospital, not well enough to be at home alone, and no place at the long-term care inn.

One study, conducted by Pamela Jarrett, a geriatrician at Horizon Health in Saint John, found that patients tend to be stuck in this state of “transitional care” for a long time – a median of 182 days, ranging from five days to a mind-boggling 6,852 days (that’s 18.7 years).

Mr. Young is one of the lucky ones. A week after a visit from a journalist, he learned he would be getting a spot in long-term care – after more than six months in hospital.

The ALC problem is not unique to Canada – many countries’ health systems are struggling to adjust to an aging population, soaring dementia rates and getting the proper balance of hospital beds, long-term care beds and home-care services – but the magnitude and the perseverance of the issue is uniquely Canadian.

In some provinces, as many as one in three hospital beds are occupied with ALC patients. For the most part, they are scattered about various hospital wards and hence invisible.

In places such as New Brunswick, entire hospital wards have been transformed into de facto nursing homes, with much higher overhead costs (on the public dime), but often without the services offered by nursing homes, such as cozy rooms, dining halls, recreation, social outings and help with daily living activities like laundry, grooming and toileting.

“Families see a real deterioration of their loved ones when they’re ALC,” says Angus Campbell, executive director of Caregivers Nova Scotia.

“One recipient hasn’t been outside for nine months,” he adds, reading from notes received from caregivers.

“There are a lot of complaints about bed sores, loss of mobility because there’s no physio, mental decline, not eating because there’s no help. The story Brenda tells about her dad is one we hear time and time again – the same or worse,” Mr. Campbell says.

He pauses for a moment and adds: “They’re really the forgotten people of the health-care system.”

To add insult to injury, once hospital patients are “discharged,” they have to pay for their hospital bed, with daily rates ranging from $33 to $110, adjusted for income.

Mr. Young, for example, was billed $1,021 a month by the hospital – the same amount he would pay in a nursing home, but without any amenities or attention.

Like many family members with loved ones in ALC, Ms. Joudrey was reluctant to speak out because she has mixed feelings about his predicament.

“Listen, dad’s safe here, and he wouldn’t be at home, so it’s the lesser of two evils,” she says.

And while it’s frustrating, Ms. Joudrey stresses that she bears no ill will toward the staff or the hospital. “The nurses are fabulous. They do the best they can, but their job is to care for really sick people, not tuck people in. This isn’t supposed to be dad’s home.”

What angers her is policy-makers’ failure to solve this decades-old problem.

So isn’t the obvious answer to build more spaces in long-term care?

“No, it isn’t,” says Ken Rockwood, director of geriatric medicine research at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

“Building more beds will simply encourage more bad behaviour.”

Dr. Rockwood says that living in a hospital is very bad for a person’s health, especially if they are frail and suffer from dementia. (And one study found that 63 per cent of ALC patients have dementia.)

“Bad food, poor sleep, lack of movement, no stimulation, you can’t wear your own clothes, you don’t go outside, you can’t even pee on your own. The whole situation erodes personal dignity,” he says.

Having patients living in hospital beds – where they are often given the derisive label “bed-blockers” – also has a domino effect that impacts hospital operations and patients across the board, from frequent cancellation of elective surgery (because there are no beds for recovery) through to patients festering on gurneys in the emergency department (because there are no beds to admit them). To complicate matters further, there’s really no incentive for hospitals to clear the decks of ALC patients; if they do, the beds will be filled by patients who require more care, and they will lose revenue.

Dr. Rockwood says the high number of ALC patients is just one symptom of a fundamental societal problem – the failure to adapt to an aging population.

“When frail elderly patients show up in the ER, we ask: ‘What the hell are they doing here?’ What we should be asking is: ‘What the hell are we not doing that they ended up here?’ ”

Dr. Rockwood says a lot more care needs to be offered where people live, in the community, including bolstering home care and managing patients with multiple chronic conditions more holistically. And the beds that do exist – in hospitals, long-term care and nursing homes – have to be used more appropriately.

For example, one reason that people remain stuck in ALC purgatory for so long is that care facilities can cherry-pick the patients they accept, so they try to avoid those who require more care, such as those with dementia and multiple chronic illnesses.

In other words, those most in need of institutional care often have the most difficulty accessing it.

“Most Canadians think that care is going to be there when they need it, but that’s not always the case,” Ms. Joudrey says.

“Some people like my dad end up in nowhere land – not where he wants to be, home, and not where he needs to be.”

Ms. Joudrey’s hope was that her dad would have a place in long-term care by Christmas, and her prayers were almost answered.

The family has been told he’ll be transferred next week.

Now, her wish is that the move won’t be too stressful and his health will improve, and that “he will gain back some of the things he lost in the isolation of waiting in ALC.”
