@viopolis asked- How's Motor City's lower levels handle earthquakes / seismic activity? ( if those occur at all )
Motor City's location (state wise at least) doesn't really get earthquakes. But any outside factors that could cause seismic activity? That could definitely affect them. The lower levels are built up pretty well, considering that they kind of have to be so the ceiling doesn't cave in and trap a bunch of people down there.
But even then, in the event that some seismic activity goes on shakes things down there, someone will pop up to the surface or call Lambda and he'll reenforce it just to be sure.
#//wasn't expecting this but ty spider!#//like yeah the solution to the problem is basically let lambda know and he'll focus more on that part of the city so nothing bad happens#//which is kind of a simple solution i suppose? Chapter 24- Part 9
Wow, lots of good items down here, plus a Red Shard! And continuing on with mining as well-
Yes…YES!!
YES!!! I'm not gonna use it right now because I'm still exploring but it's in the Bag still!!
Okay, back over here now-
Particularly well-guarded rock candy this time, I suppose.
Oooh, right- and with Rock Smash, we can catch that Solrock, too!
For this, I'll have Riptide use Ice Fang to lower Solrock’s HP most safely.
Oh, it's got Cosmic Power? That's actually very helpful, it shouldn't die to this second Ice Fang then.
And with its health in the red, a Great Ball should be enough to-
Ooor not. Okay, into Glare now-
We paralyze it, like so-
And now we throw a Poké Ball.
“Zon” is the word for “sun” in…well, several different languages, but I saw it most often in Dutch, so-
Anyways, there doesn't seem to be anything else to find in the Stairway right now, so let's head back up and make use of that Shiny Stone, eh?
I decided to level Bloom up to Lv. 40 first so he would learn Toxic before evolving. And now…
Look at him!! He's beautiful!!
And with that, I think it's good to stop here. In the end, I suppose we didn't do much besides just…exploring and catching Pokémon. I guess this would be the equivalent of a filler episode, sorta? Nine parts…haven’t had a chapter with less than ten parts in a long time. Not that I think that's a bad thing, honestly- after all the plot stuff that's happened these past few chapters, the death and the content warnings, I think a simple, light chapter like this was needed.
Especially since the next chapter is unlikely to be anything but plot stuff! It'll be hunting down remaining encounters and then challenging Shade! Should I be terrified? I don't know, we'll have to see. But given Shade’s…everything as of now, it'll be interesting, I feel sure of that. So, come on over next time to see how that goes! Until then!

Mildly effective Collapsing Hotbars guide
Imagine if you will, someone with all jobs leveled including crafters, should they want to put all of their jobs on hotbars, that would easily take more than 3 whole hotbars and at all times, which means a very cluttered UI especially on lower resolutions, but what if we could make that into one hotbar with a button that opens a selection? First thing, a little preparation, you will need at least 2 hotbars that do not change when you change jobs, and I personally like to have 3, so hop onto Character Configuration > Hotbars > Shared and set a few up for use
These will be where we put: The button to show the jobs, and the jobs themselves, I have a third one for if I need a button inside a button or something of the sort
Now, we'll be making Macros to get this done, they can be found in the System menu, go ahead and get a few started for any and all categories you would want to switch to
At the moment, these are empty and will do absolutely nothing, we will fix that in a moment but before that we need to take a detour back into hotbars, specifically the non-shared jobs
Now, there's one concept that we are absolutely going to need for the next few parts, and that is non-shared hotbars. They all change with your job, and we will need to borrow a few (lot) of them for this to work, but if you had any to spare you wouldn't need to be doing all this, would you? No, we need to find non-shared hotbars we can use without changing any of our current jobs, and for that, we need to turn back to 2.0: A Realm Reborn ARR had its jobs evolve into other, more powerful jobs with the use of the Soul Crystals, and the part that is useful here, is that jobs with crystals and jobs without crystals have completely different hotbars! This is my Dragoon with its Job Stone
And this is what it looks like if I take it off, changing me back into Lancer
And since we're not planning on using Lancer without the DRG job stone any time soon (Or so I hope to god we don't), let's steal those and put all of our jobs in those! (I will be using Thaumaturge for my own bars and throught the process)
And just like that, we have everything prepared to make those hotbars!
Well, once we have gone over Macro commands, there are a few you'll have to understand in order to do this, these are: "/Hotbar Display X on/off" - Either hides or shows the X hotbar, useful for cleaning up when you don't need to change jobs, for example "/Hotbar Copy JobA X JobB Y" - A bit more complex, this command will copy the hotbar X from JobA and paste everything on it to the hotbar Y from JobB, so say I want to put everything I have on the THM bar 1 into the Shared bar 9, I just need to type "/hotbar copy THM 1 Share 9" and voila
Now, we can get to working on our Macros to hide, display and select the bars showing up, we will use the "/Hotbar Display" to ensure we can see hotbar 9, and the "/hotbar copy" to ensure that hotbar 9 is showing the correct category for each Macro, since I have them separated into DPS / Tanks / Healers / Crafters, my Macros will be copying THM's hotbars 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 into our Shared 9 respectively, which will look something like this
Now just toss these into Hotbar 10 (Along with another "/hotbar display 9 off" button if you'd like to hide stuff after you're done) and boom, you have the basics of it down
Maybe you're already having a few ideas on how to expand this and good on you for it, with just this info you can extrapolate and imagine a ton of ways of adding into things... let's throw one more into the mix, shall we?
So, we know how to copy hotbars around now, great, lovely, hotbar 10 is still static and it's ugly and I hate it, let's change that, and I'll be borrowing Conjurer's (CNJ) hotbars for this
As you can see, I added a few more categories and nuked the "hide" button, that's because we're going to be putting it on top of whichever category is active at the moment. So let's use "/hotbar copy" in chat to paste the current category setup on CNJ's hotbars, doing it for as many categories we have + 1, if you have more categories than bars for that job, just steal from somewhere else! (I will be needing one more, so Arcanist will be the one holding the current hotbar)
Now, the annoying part, each one of CNJ's hotbars will become an "activated version", with the hide button taking the place of the current active category, so drag a hide button over one of the buttons of each hotbar except the +1 you made earlier. You likely won't have all hotbars visible, so feel free to "/hotbar copy" a modified share 10 into the CNJ hotbars
And lastly, the annoying part, you are going to put in all of the category macros a little line saying "/hotbar copy cnj x share 10", with share being the hotbar where the hide button covers that category, and in the hide button, you'll instead put the hotbar that holds the first bar you made, the +1 you (hopefully) didn't change Now, just test all your macros and then realize that half of them aren't working oh god why are they not working I'm gonna have to check the hotbars again I fucking hate this game if all is good, congratulations! Now go off and find even fancier ways to break these hotbars (Tip: You can use "/micon X" to change the icon of the macro into whichever skill or item you substitute on X, put it in quotation marks if it has a space in it)

Patience is a Virtue | Shinsuke Kita x Reader
✧ Summary: You lost track of the days that you were in love with Kita. He was so much more than just the team mom that many outsiders dubbed him as. He was the wielder of cold-logic and held the bluntest of words at times, but he showed his own special brand of care for each member of the team. What you hadn’t expected was for him to especially care about you. ➳ Warnings: Language because twins lmao ➳ Tags: Childhood friends to lovers; mostly fluff and humor; Atsumu being a little shit; friends trying to be match-makers; mild jealousy on Kita’s part; introspection and some character development
✧ Masterlist
---xXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx---
As the manager of the Inarizaki volleyball club, you were no stranger to the antics of your generally loud team. And while this was usually elicited by the twins, with most of the team ahem especially Suna being no help (since many would rather film then break-up the fight), you were almost a pro at keeping them calm to the public eye.
You grew up alongside most of the members of the team, a strange connection between all of the players. From advanced classes in junior high to being literal neighbors to some of them, you were long-term classmates with many of the members - including the captain himself.
Kita was much more than the doting team mom than people gave him credit for. Yes, he was often the face of the team, the voice of reason that handled the interviews and other press coverage, but this all came from a place of stone-cold reason. He had strict routines and never cared about doing things without practical rationale. Kita had a mature way of thinking, often compartmentalizing both people and emotions, to the point that it made people his own age not relate to him.
Even the quiet Suna, the analytical little shit who loved to poke fun at said captain, had honestly admitted that he thought Kita to be on the robot-side of the emotional spectrum.
And, despite all this, Kita was the long-term object of your affections.
It was all the little things that made your crush on him grow. From his proper speech, the blunt words no matter to whom he was speaking to, or his unusual brand of care he extended toward his teammates, Kita was the foundation of Inarizaki that you fell for. And when he was named captain of the volleyball team? You almost cried alongside him, reveling in the rare fit of pure happiness that he was gracing your eyes with.
You remembered the last time you walked home together, for once not being called away on separate duties as captain and leading manager. He treated you to ice-cream and walked along you side-by-side.
“Mint chocolate-chip with two cherries.” He told the street-cart vendor confidently, knowing your favorite flavors by heart at this point.
You ordered for him in kind, receiving the treat from the vendor as Kita paid for both of your orders. Anyone else would be contesting it, but you knew that Kita would not take no for an answer. He did stuff like this all the time with you, you were better off not fighting it. This was not the hill you wanted to die on.
But you were surprised when Kita licked at your ice cream, smiling as he tasted it and maintaining your gaze head-on. The shock on your face must have been evident since the smirk on his widened. You reached for the cone in his hand, only for him to lightly slap it away.
“Should I be asking with a pretty please or something?” You asked with a playful pout.
“No.” Kita replied, before lowering it to your eye-level.
Did he want you to lick it? While he was holding it????
Wordlessly, you followed his silent command and felt the minty taste of your afternoon snack on your tongue. Kita watched the action, eyes following your tongue as he shot you a friendly smile. He pulled away before you could get that much more, before licking your ice cream again.
Was that an indirect kiss???
“My, you two make quite the couple.” The vendor commented, clasping her hands together as she watched your interaction.
“We’re not dating.” Kita answered, squashing any hope you had from that interaction.
He was just?? So confusing??
You had so many little moments like this over the years. So many that had you often questioning deep into the night what truly was your relationship with the blunt captain of Inarizaki. You fell for him so many years ago, it made you wonder when was the last time you really thought of him as just a friend. Did he truly not know about your feelings?
But Kita was smart and on just as many occasions, you wondered if he knew the truth but simply did nothing about them. If he could read the twins with little effort, there was no doubt he understood your feelings long-ago, but decided not to act.
At least, that was your reason behind not openly admitting it to him:
That Kita knew you had a crush on him. And since he did not feel the same, it was better off if he did not address them.
And so you never brought it up, stewing in silence for years.
Eight years was a long time to be in love alone.
“You should just give up on him.” Jisoo, your fellow Inarizaki manager commented one day. She was in the same class as the twins, a year your junior.
The both of you were lounging outside in the courtyard for lunch, a humidly hot day that made the two of you especially lazy this particular school-day. Only a few more hours more and you would be free of classes, liberated of any schoolwork and finally enjoying the weekend.
You were mindlessly scrolling through your phone, looking at the different posts on social media from your various friends. Atsumu had posted of his serve practice the day before, his comment section flooded with various hearts by his fan-club of all things. Osamu’s private Instabook was of food while Aran’s had posted one of the day’s blue skies.
“Why would I do that?” You asked with a sigh, already used to her trying to guide you away from him. You understood why, it was hardly a smart decision to hold onto your feelings, not that you really cared.
“Aren’t you tired of it by now?”
But was that a good enough reason at this point? You were a third-year and about to graduate. If there was one thing that was constant throughout your entire life in the farming prefecture you called a home, it was that you had feelings for the captain.
The sky was blue. Summer was hot. You liked Kita.
It was that simple sometimes. And while there were moments that hurt your heart, it was not like you had any head-space to even try to stop.
“Maybe.” You answered candidly, “Honestly, I wouldn’t even know how to. But I don’t want to either.”
“I worry about you, senpai.”
“What can I say?” You tried to joke, even with your sad smile. “Kita has my heart on lock-down.”
“We’re all going to the twins’ party this weekend, why don’t you try talking to some of the guys there?”
“Not this again.” You complained as you put your phone down on the table.
“Come on!” Jisoo pushed, “I’m sure there’ll be someone there that peaks your interest.”
You raised a brow in response, doubt evident on your face.
She teased, “It could also be on a purely physical level.”
Laughing at her statement, you said. “Like that’s any better.”
“A little smooches here and there never hurt anyone.”
“Now I’m worrying about you.”
She giggled, before continuing. “Just think about it. First guy tonight who hits on you, give him a chance.”
While you would have dismissed the thought immediately, there was something rather playful happening in the pit of your stomach. As if, for once in a long-time, you wanted to feel the puppy love of just casually flirting. Of grinning and laughing along with someone's advances and actually enjoying one these parties; rather than just sitting on the couch playing Mario Kart waiting for Kita to hopefully show.
“I don’t know, maybe.”
She sighed loudly, happy to have cracked you a little. Jisoo continued with a teasing grin on her face. “Oh right, I forgot. You’re a masochist.”
“I could’ve told ya that.” Another voice broke out, the familiar setter of two-tone hair taking the seat next to you. He picked at one of your french-fries, eating it with no preamble as Suna took the seat diagonal from you, next to Jisoo at the picnic table outside.
For someone who spoke a lot of game about not being caught up with the twins, Suna tended to hang around Atsumu quite a bit.
“I am not a masochist.” You defended from Atsumu’s words, earning an eye-roll from the other female manager.
“Why else would you agree to manage a team with the twins?” Suna quipped before taking out his phone, probably scrolling through social media as well. Atsumu shrugged in agreement, a smirk on his face.
“Also, tell that to your love life.” Jisoo countered, playfully moving her lunch out of Atsumu’s reach before the setter could commandeer some of hers.
You quietly pushed the rest of your fries in his direction, appetite long gone on this overly humid day. Doing this sort of thing was actually quite natural with the twin, sharing food and hugs were a normal thing with your friend.
“It’s not that bad. You argued.
“Wait, have ya ever dated before?” Atsumu asked.
“Have you?” You countered back, the setter was infamous for his many… romantic encounters. But the young man had yet to ever put a serious label on any of those instances, at least not to your knowledge.
He rolled his eyes in response, turning to Jisoo instead to continue.
“Come on senpai, not even a smooch?” She pushed.
You felt your face flush at having been called out, “Well....”
Atsumu turned his body toward you in his seat, his insufferably confident smirk back on, “I could help ya with that.”
You pushed away at his shoulder, “You say it like it’s a problem.”
“Ya savin’ it till ya get married or somethin’?” He asked, genuinely curious. Even Suna turned to you, looking up from his phone in interest.
You turned to Jisoo, the conversation taking a dangerous turn. If you said yes, their curiosity would definitely be spiked. And it was not like you could lie to them and say it was some random person in your class - you knew these boys for years, but they also knew you in kind.
Yes or no?
The other manager did not even try to bail you out and your silence was already tantamount to an answer.
“Aww. How cute of ya, (L/N).” Atsumu chuckled, reaching to pat your head. You slapped it away before he got too close. For someone younger than you, he was quite the brat. Years of being friends long stripped away any formalities apparently.
“Looks like our heart-breaker manager is actually very sentimental.” Suna commented, a brow raised in your direction.
“Heart-breaker?” You questioned in genuine confusion.
“Come on, (L/N)-san.” Jisoo answered this time, “She’s had her heart set for so long, she hasn’t even seen the other boys she’s curved.”
“How is that possible when no one’s confessed to me?”
Jisoo laughed while Atsumu absently tapped his finger on the table, “Even I know that ain’t true, (L/N).”
“Whatever.” There was no reasoning with your underclassmen when they were this dead-set. No one had confessed to you before, right? At least none to your memory, they were just being instigators as usual?
“That doesn’t answer the question why ya sittin’ here single.” Atsumu stated.
“He obviously has feelings for you, but she’s too much of a wuss to confess.” Jisoo stated it plainly for you, then turned to look at Atsumu with an expectant face. “So it’s either because he hasn’t noticed, which I doubt, or he’s not looking for commitment.”
“Ah. And it’s someone we’ve known for years, huh?” Suna deduced, words come out slowly.
You straightened your back in surprise and shot warning looks toward both boys. This was getting too close, they were starting to put together pieces of a puzzle you hadn’t even willingly handed to them. And knowing these little shits, they were not going to let this go until they found out.
Atsumu inclined his head for you to continue while Suna’s eyes never left your own. Suna was smart all the time, but with being associated with the twins constantly, it was easy to forget that fact. And since the trio acted like idiots so often, you tended to forgo how truly analytical even the Atsumu was.
This was not good - so not good. It probably would not take them long to deduce the person at this rate.
“I swear to the highest volleyball gods out there,” You spit out as your turned to the other manager, “I will fucking smite you off this planet if you say another word.”
Jisoo burst out laughing immediately, almost choking on her lunch as Atsumu grinned at your warning, the exact opposite response you wanted.
“Strong words ya got there.” He commented, body still angled toward yours in interest. “Looks like we hittin’ a lil too close to home?”
“Don’t even try it.” You responded back, turning away from his inquisitive eyes and back to your phone.
Needless to say, they didn’t listen.
Suna backed up in his seat, eyes glancing between you and the setter. “No commitment, huh?”
Meanwhile, Atsumu was rapid-firing questions. “Is it a second-year? Third-year? Is he on the volleyball team? Do we know ‘em personally?”
You smiled at his now peaked curiosity, the setter almost looking like a small puppy waiting for a treat. But you refused to answer, no doubt sure that they would tell the captain the moment they found out the truth. You turned to Jisoo, who was smiling away at Atsumu, but otherwise sat thankfully quiet.
Atsumu was firing off specific names now, hoping to get any response from you.
“The bastard’s gotta be on the team.”
“Bastard?” Jisoo laughed at the nickname.
“Shut up, Atsumu.” You countered, attempting to poke harshly at his forehead to stop. But he just grabbed the hand in one of his own, holding it in his lap as he continued to spit out names.
“Is it Aran?”
“Will you stop?”
“‘Samu?”
“I will murder you in cold blood.”
“... Is it me?”
You tried your best to pull your hand away, now realizing his tightening hold on against the skin of your hand. How long had you been sitting there holding hands? You felt a natural rosiness rise to your cheeks, not really because of the recipient, but because you were doing so in public with some guy.
Instead, you poked the setter’s side roughly, earning a deep groan, but freeing your hand in the process. Packing up your belongings, you stepped out of the picnic table and stated, “Lunch is almost over, we should get to class.”
You walked away with a small wave, the boys turning to the now only female occupant of the lunch-table.
“So…”
“Nu-uh.” Jisoo cut off Atsumu, moving to leave the table before she accidentally said anything.
“Throw a man a bone here! Or at least help him bone.” Atsumu murmured that last part under his breath, “Ya don’t even have to verbally confirm it - is it me?”
Jisoo paused as she stood, books in hand already. The look she threw him was mischievous, but otherwise she left in silence.
Unfortunately for you, all you were thinking about during class was that conversation you just had. Kita sat on your right in your next few classes, the mild Ōmimi behind the both of you. The last thing you needed was to linger on their teasing words of smooches and marriage. You couldn’t confess your feelings, imagining anything else?? You could only imagine the bright blush at the simple thought of it.
And apparently, you hadn’t hidden it well.
“Something wrong?”
There were still a couple more minutes until the teacher would return. And so you were sitting in the classroom with Kita alongside you, other students milling around the room. He was so damn good at reading people and you cursed that he was using it against you now.
“Just thinking about some stuff Jisoo said at lunch.” You tried to wave off.
“You’re blushing.” Kita stated bluntly, putting his book down as he spoke to you.
He was never one to sugar-coat his words.
“Am I?” You put your palms to your cheeks, as if to feel the heat. There was no point in trying to lie to him. “She was teasing me about boys.”
“Oh. Are you dating anyone?” Kita asked.
God, this was awful.
There was nothing worse than your crush asking about your crush.
“No, not yet.” You shook your head negatively, turning towards the window on your left, at least trying to hide your expression.
“Yet? Are you looking to date soon?”
You wanted to scream.
“Um, not in the near future.” You tried to deflect, “But it could happen!”
“Of course.” He smiled, “I packed extra onigiri for lunch, but I couldn’t find you. I’m not sure if you still want it.”
“Ah, I would love to! If I’m not imposing, then yes.”
Kita shook his head, “I packed it for you.”
“You’re so sweet sometimes.” You said honestly, taking it and munching down.
“You usually either forget your lunch or eat junk.” He stated plainly, making you suddenly blanch at his cold-words. I mean, he wasn’t exactly wrong either. You thought back to the lunch you had today, literally just water and french fries that you ended up giving to Atsumu.
“Ha, well.” You trailed off before settling on, “Thanks for always taking care of me.”
Kita’s small grin widened as he looked you in the eyes, “It’s my pleasure.”
When he said things like that, it easily set your heart aflame. It was so simple, such small interactions that you would have to squint hard to find anything underlying in his words. But you wanted to. You wanted to feel needed and also give to the captain as well.
The blush you had earlier was probably nothing in comparison to how you looked now, you were sure. And, with Kita being the ever smart cookie he was, there was no doubt that he spied your inflamed reaction.
Was that conversation over? Was he expecting a response?
Maybe the volleyball god’s did have mercy on your poor soul, since your teacher walked in then and thankfully brought your conversation to a halt. You tried not to outwardly seem relieved, turning to the front and taking out your notebooks.
Your mind wandered in and out of the lecture. There were moments that your gaze just happened to meander over to the captain to your right. It was one thing to suddenly notice you were staring at him, but another thing entirely to be caught in the action. Kita would usually just smile at you kindly, before nudging his chin toward the front of the room toward the teacher.
Even later during volleyball practice, your eyes would casually dawdle over to where the captain was standing. Whether he was watching the team with careful eyes or participating himself in practicing spikes, your eyes usually just found him.
But today was not the day to let down your guard.
Atsumu and Suna were paying careful attention to you. And now it was no secret where your gaze was pointed to. Suna smirked when he realized, but Atsumu clicked his tongue and mentally filed it away for later. Jisoo once snapped playful fingers in front of your face, grabbing your attention to flip the scoreboard.
When it was finally time to clean, Kita helped you collect the left-over volleyballs and roll the hammock into the proper storage room. You did so carefully, making sure not to accidentally touch his skin lest he back off from the motion. But the kind, neutral expression he shot you went straight to your heart.
“Let’s get the scoreboard next.” He instructed, the both of you moving to opposite sides of the wheeled board.
And you would have, if Atsumu had not thrown a casual arm across the captain’s shoulders.
“Hey, do ya mind helpin’ ‘Samu over there?” He motioned with his thumb over his shoulder, pointing to his twin who was not looking at all.
Slightly suspicious, Kita did as asked anyway and went with the grey-headed twin to mop the floors.
“What was that about?” You asked as Atsumu pushed the scoreboard along with you.
It was only when you entered the storage room alone that he replied, “So Mister No Gaps Kita Shinsuke, huh?”
“What?!” You fought the inward need to slap yourself, high voice and exclamation enough to show that he was right on the money. “You asshole, how do you know that?”
“I didn’t need anyone to tell me that.” He emphasized, gesturing at your eyes with two fingers. “Ya kept starin’ at ‘em the entire practice.”
You huffed frowning, “That obvious, huh?”
“Yea, he probably knows too - especially if Suna and I figured this shit out.”
That didn’t help at all.
“Great.” You leaned against the nearby wall and put a palm to your forehead.
Atsumu crossed his arms, “So why haven’t ya confessed to ‘em yet?”
You scoffed and shot him a flat-expression, “Because he doesn’t like me back?”
“What? He said that to ya?”
“Well, no.” You hesitated, but explained. “I mean, he definitely knows I have feelings. And Shinsuke has never been one to beat around the bush. If he hasn’t addressed it, it’s probably because he doesn’t want to make it awkward… since he doesn't feel the same.”
“I think you’re a dumbass.” Atsumu stated back, sighing heavily. “Kita don’t think like that and we both know it.”
“Why else would he be waiting it out?” You asked, “This is the same Kita that told us he doesn’t understand how people feel nervous.”
“Jesus, (F/N). He was talkin’ about volleyball.” Atsumu groaned, raking one of his hands through his piss-blonde hair. “Kita’s human too. Maybe he’s not sure how ya would respond for the same reasons.”
“I don’t know if love advice from the school’s resident fuck-boy is a good idea.” You jabbed instead, a playful smile on your face.
Atsumu put a mock-offended hand on his chest, a smirk finding a way on his face before he squashed it down seriously. He took a step toward you until you were less than an arms’ length-apart, “Fine, have it your way. Stew in silence until he finds someone else.”
That struck a silent chord in you.
“Honestly, that was kind of the plan these past few years.” You admitted, turning your head toward the ground. “If he could find his true happiness with someone else, then I would be happy for him.”
Atsumu must have detected your seriousness, since he hesitated to say his next few words. “Don’ be like that. Stop bein’ an idiot - he likes you.”
“Shut up.”
“Come on, (L/N).” Atsumu levelled with you, “Ya standin’ here like ya ain’t the only girl he’s ever withstood.”
“Wow, what a feat.” You muttered as you sighed.
“Fine, if ya don’t believe that. Aren’t ya’ll best friends anyway?” Atsumu asked, “I’m sure he’d do anythin’ to keep you close.”
You hesitated, but agreed. Your relationship, no matter if he reciprocated your feelings or not, you were best friends. But if he didn’t feel the same and you said something? Would there ever be recovering from something like that?
Atsumu drew you out of your thoughts before he lost you further to your over-thinking, “You’re a real catch. Anybody would be lucky to have ya.”
“Oh?” You shot a withered smile at him.
“And I’m not just sayin’ that to put the moves on ya.” Atsumu joked, earning a light punch to his shoulder as you walked past him to leave.
“Yeah, yeah.” You said before turning back towards him, remembering to say. “None of this leaves this room. You hear that?”
“Yes ma’am.” He mock-saluted, a second later a loud ahem ringing through the room.
You tensed up and turned toward the door, seeing a blank-faced Shinsuke standing in the open doorway. Atsumu was always surprised, albeit much less worried than you were. Was your secret finally out?
“Am I interrupting something?” He asked, before you pushed shouted a loud No! and brushed past him back into the gymnasium.
Atsumu tried to casually exit the room as well, before his captain’s voice rang-out again, “Care to explain what that was about?”
The setter had two options here: either brush it off or fan the flames that he knew for a fact was there. You were the obvious party, openly staring at the captain like your eyes belonged on him. But Atsumu knew that those feelings were not as unrequited as you thought.
He remembered some club-room talk not that long ago. It was normal for the guys to discuss their preferences, something that Atsumu was rather vocal about on multiple occasions. Aran was just looking for someone he could cook while Ōmimi stated he liked girls who were generally very kind. Osamu preferred someone who was a bit meeker while Atsumu loved ‘em vocal, even bratty to the point of talking back.
“Of course, you would.” Suna commented as he dressed.
“What the fuck do ya mean by that?” The setter bit out.
“As in the fuckboy thinks he’s a girl tamer.” Suna snarkily replied.
“Well, when a girl has a mouth on her. I want to put it to good use.” Atsumu said with a smirk, earning a loose towel to the head, one that Osamu had just launched from across the room. Aran sighed and grabbed it before Atsumu could whip it back. Kita nodded toward his counterpart in quiet thanks.
Many of the others were still dressing after practice this day, it would be annoying to have to break up another fight between the twins then.
“Can ya be less of an asshole?” The grey-headed twin asked.
“Wha? I’m speakin’ the truth!” Atsumu defended, “Not every girl is like that anyway.”
“And who would the infamous Ratsumu have his eyes on?” Suna asked, genuinely curious but not missing the chance to poke at the setter.
Atsumu frowned, but continued anyway. “No one, right now. But I still got eyes, ya know. Ya can’t tell me our manager ain’t a cutie.”
“She would rather hand you a new asshole than ever date you.” Suna said, to which Akagi laughed.
“Careful, ‘Tsamu.” Osamu playfully warned, “People might think ya like (L/N)-san.”
“What can I say, she’s single and hot as fuck.” Atsumu replied off-handedly.
It was a plain statement, but you could almost physically feel the temperature change in the club-room. Aran was glancing between the captain while the rest wondered why it was suddenly dead silent.
Osamu wondered if his prayers had been heard and he would soon be an only child.
“I suggest not saying that again.” Kita stated over his shoulder as he buttoned up the rest of his shirt.
That was a clear enough warning to everyone in the room that you were off limits. Suna had remembered this instance as well, in the present day reminding Atsumu after lunch not to push any buttons. It was clear then that Kita had no tolerance to any shit he was going to pull and now the pining was mutual on both your ends. Suna reminded him again and again during class to just let you and Kita sort your feelings naturally.
Pfft.
Was Atsumu going to be a little shit and try to sew some discord?
Hell yes.
“What can I say?” Atsumu feigned being casual, even shrugging as he exited the quiet storage room. “A pretty girl and a young guy enter a closet alone together, you know the rest.”
The glare he felt on his neck could have been enough to snap it with this much pressure. But, Atsumu digressed. He was doing the both of you a favor anyway, pushing you together when you both already had feelings for one another (albeit with some mind games interspersed).
Atsumu almost laughed when Kita grabbed your hand when the two of you walked home together.
Kita knew what the setter was doing. What buttons he was trying to push, what he was trying to imply with you. The captain knew it all and he was still getting pissed off.
True to everyone’s assumptions, Kita knew about your feelings for him. The extent and duration, that he was not sure of. But he knew that you have thought about him in a romantic light for quite some time. Lingered looks and purposeful touches, on both your ends, was not something he could easily ignore.
What made Kita wonder was why you hadn’t said anything at all?
You were often pretty straight-forward as well. Not exactly in terms of romance, but you when were interested in something you tended to speak your mind. Whether it be a new show, some shounen anime you were following along with, you always shared it with him.
And for that fact he was always grateful.
Many of the others your age tended to be warded off by his way of thinking, branding him too mature or even too cold at times. To think that even the sarcastic Suna had nicknamed him as a robot, it was interesting to see that was how most people saw him.
But you didn’t.
Or at least, you saw passed his cold exterior and were just a freely-spoken with your mind. Kita’s blunt way of speaking had casualties sometimes, but you usually voiced if his blunt speech was too much. There were times that, if you were inadvertently hurt by his words, you would say it out-loud.
He remembered the last time this happened, not even a month ago. The two of you were hanging out under the shade of a tree, about to go out to a team hangout when you exited your back porch wearing a blue sundress. It flirted high above your knees and showed off the creamy legs of yours that he loved to trail his eyes over.
You looked breath-taking.
And so he said:
“Is there an occasion I’m missing today? I thought we were just going out with the team.”
The disappointed look on your face was immediate and it did not take a genius to figure those were the wrong words to say. But what he was not sure is where it went wrong. Logically, it made sense. You were going to walk at least two miles to the train and then from there a mile to the arcade. And most of that time you would all be standing. Would you even be comfortable doing all this walking in sandals?
But you didn’t get offended or draw away from him from these smaller misunderstandings.
You were always ready to knock some sense into him if need be.
“Not even a compliment on how I look? How mean.” You said with a frown, “I tried a bit more because I don’t usually get the chance to.”
“I know, but I want you to be comfortable considering the walks today.” Kita lightly grabbed your elbow as he stepped closer, “Besides, you always look beautiful no matter what you’re wearing.”
Your blush was palpable, Kita was almost sure he could fry an egg on your forehead, if the redness was any indication of temperature.
“Let’s save this dress for another occasion. Preferably where only I see these.” He glanced down to indicate your legs, to which you sputtered and allowed him to guide you back inside the house.
And instead, he picked a pair of light-colored shorts and a loose summer-blouse. Kita knew you had a pair of black-and-white sneakers that would go with it anyway. You commented how it was almost scary that Kita knew your wardrobe, but he stated it simply:
I like what you wear. And I think it looks very agreeable on you.
It was simple and he stated it thusly. And from your reaction, it seemed as if it had made your day. From the beaming smile on your face to the new skip in your step, it was clear to him that he had amended the situation properly with your guidance.
But he still had the same issue: Kita thought he was being clear as day.
There was no one else he was spending time with like this. No one else whom Kita was expressing interest in like he was with you. From sharing ice-cream to hangouts alone with just the two of you, he thought his way of flirting with you was obvious? His actions alone should have been clear that he was showing his own interest in you.
And so if Kita was being clear with his feelings, why hadn’t you said anything?
This was not something he could just say and retract, either. The last thing he wanted to do was put your entire friendship on the line just to lose you. What if you actually did not feel the same way? But from your constant blushing and obvious gaze on him, you liked him too? But why hadn’t you said anything? Were you expecting him too?
He almost groaned aloud at this line of thinking.
Nothing had him flustered quite like you. Kita was confident both in school and on the court, a sure faith that no matter where it was. It was not a baseless arrogance, but more like a calm trust that he knew what he was doing was right.
And yet…
When it came to you, that brand of confidence simply withered away. Not always a bad thing, you often caught him off-guard with your own kindness and rarely did you ever truly fight. But there were times that he sorely wished he knew what was going on in that head of yours.
Like why hadn’t you said anything to him regarding this tension?
Or better yet, why the hell were you whispering with Atsumu in the gym closet?
The setter knew all about your being off-limits. Kita made it very clear that day and it seemed even then, the message did not totally receive in the asshole's mind. Or rather, it probably did, Atsumu just decided to ignore it.
And so on your shared walk home after practice, Kita gently grabbed your hand and did not let go. You almost jumped in surprise alongside him. Not that you hadn’t held hands before, but it was usually called for in the context. Navigating one of the twin’s parties, through a crowded group, or just to guide you somewhere.
But never had he held your hand for no reason.
Kita just smiled, hoping this would send a clear enough message to both you and the meddlesome boys behind you.
Meanwhile, Atsumu had to stop himself from cackling aloud. Osamu was ready to question his brother over what the hell was that about, but Suna assured him that it was best not to get involved at this rate. Aran simply sighed, but waved goodbye and goodnight to the rest of the team.
Your smile was a mask to your inward screaming, only to be silenced to a blank void. Your mind was comparable to that picture of spilled milk - the only thing inside as if the very act was an enigma. You had no idea what to say, what to do in this situation as you both continued to walk along.
For someone who was an athlete, the skin of his hand was surprisingly soft as it encased your own. You felt your hand unconsciously squeeze his and feared that the act would have him pulling away, as if waking him up from his act. But Kita squeezed back, a fond expression reflected back at you.
The two of you walked home together whenever you had the chance, unless called for by other duties. So this was usually normal for the two of you. Conversation was just easy, ranging from school or recent events, and even if one-sided you had no issues with simply speaking to the captain. And yet today…
Kita and you were both completely silent.
You couldn’t even tell if something else was on his mind, a neutral look on his face as he looked ahead. Was this action to show that he was reciprocating your feelings? You hated being unsure like this, but there was too much vulnerability to simply lay-out what you wanted to say.
Even on the train, Kita sat next to you quietly but still held your hand over his knee. You watched the action, before trying to level your breathing as to not freak out. But Kita kept going about his day, even taking out his phone to check a few texts with the other hand.
It was meant to show this was entirely on purpose.
Only when your house popped into view during something conspiratory popped into your mind - Did one of the boys tell him?
You felt the small seed of hope grow further. Was it just a coincidence that the day Suna and Atsumu found out about your secret was the same day, after literal years, that Kita found out as well? And that maybe if he knew now, was he reciprocating in some way?
You moved to glance at him in the corner of your eye, but he was already looking at you.
The both of you stopped short of the gate, but you hesitated for a second to say anything. There was so much on your mind and stewing in silence was the exact opposite thing you wanted to do. Before you could even think of words to say, your captain made the first move again.
Kita tenderly reached for your other hand, holding both in his much larger ones. He brought them up together and shot you a gentle smile, “(F/N), your hands are so soft.”
It came out like word vomit.
“I like you, Kita!”
SHIT.
Maybe you read him wrong?? If he was going to make a move, why was he looking at you so surprised??
“And here I was, wanting to say something first.” Kita said as he chuckled lightly, his hands gliding the rest of the way up your arms. “I like you, too.”
You didn’t even have time to overthink, Kita wasting no time and pulling you towards him. Quickly raising your hands to his chest, you steadied yourself against him as he held you in the close embrace. His smile was almost blinding - not from the size, but rather the genuine feel behind it.
Your hands slid upwards, folding behind his neck as your faces drew closer together. One of his hands gently carded in your hair, lightly guiding you to him. You closed your eyes in silent anticipation, long awaited joining finally happening with only stars as your audience.
The skin of his lips slotted gently against yours and you silently relished the feel of the prolonged peck. You pulled him closer, silently nudging him to go the step further. Kita smiled in response, making you beam right back at him. It was honestly hard to deepen the kiss further, expressions pulled from your shared grins. You were two idiots smiling at one another, foreheads pressed together as you struggled to deepen your impassioned kiss.
“I’ve waited so long to hold you like this.” Kita whispered against your lips, one of his hands resting around your waist.
“Me too.” You replied in a low vice, eyes still closed as you just felt him.
He watched your cute expression, from your rosy appearance to the way you deliciously leaned your body into him. Kita felt his eyes shutter closed, savoring the feeling of you two finally joined. You moved together in tandem, softly at first, and then with a swift intensity that made you cling to him even further - as if Kita was the only solid thing in this suddenly swaying world.
The world was constantly moving, either too fast or too slow or too much at times. Until finally, in Kita’s arms, it finally felt right.
“I’ve liked you for a really long time.” You confessed.
“I know.” Kita responded simply, “Me too.”
You almost wanted to laugh, but withheld it from possibly breaking the atmosphere. “Is it really that simple?”
“Yes.” Kita said as he smiled, moving to place a light kiss on your forehead. “I was honestly… afraid to say anything in fear of your response. But now we are both aware, right?”
You grinned back and stretched on your tippy-toes to kiss his cheek, “Yes.”
“That’s it then.” Kita stated as he leaned his forehead back against yours, “You’re mine. And I’m yours.”
You whispered back, “Sounds like a deal.”
His insistent mouth parted your eager lips, sending wild tremors crawling up your spine, evoking sensations you had never known you were even capable of feeling. And as the swimming giddiness spun you round and round, you steadied yourself to kiss him back just as passionately. With a swipe of his tongue against the crease of your lips, you parted your mouth eagerly.
There was no battle, no insistent fight between your two appendages. There was only Kita, eagerly roaming around your mouth as you sensually rubbed tongues. You openly moaned at the feeling, not even noticing the noise until Kita was smiling in response.
You blushed at the realization, but Kita only complimented the sound. “Make that noise again for me.”
Your smile dropped to a more sultry smirk.
“You’ll have to earn it.”
Kita felt his eyes comically widen before dropping to a half-lid, “Oh?”
“My parents aren’t home…”
“Oh.”
Kita placed a kiss on your forehead just to lean away, one of his hands dropping to grab your own. You hurried along with his pace, suddenly breaking out into a faster walk in the direction of your home.
“Let’s make up for lost time, shall we?”
BONUS:
“No way.” Jisoo commented on the sight before her, nudging Atsumu standing next to her. The twin’s party was ravaging around them, but there was an unlikely and yet very likely couple that had just walked through the door. And while it was normal to see the two of them together, it was the first official time as an exclusive couple.
Walking in was Kita and you, hands clasped together like this was oh so natural.
Akagi greeted the both of you with a smile while Aran waved you guys over to the living, where many of the other team members were playing a game. Kita guided you through the party, joined hands proudly on display for all party goers.
Atsumu held out a hand in Jisoo direction’s, causing her to frown but nonetheless place some lost yen in his open palm.
But seeing you smile and share a kiss openly with the captain, Jisoo didn’t exactly mind losing this bet.

Infodump/Long Post: Caffeine, Sugar, Dopamine, & ADHD
Hi. I’m Nico. I don’t usually infodump on here but Aiden did before & fellow neurodivergent people seemed to enjoy seeing nd centered content, & people gave him a lot of attention, so…
Here goes I guess. I hope y’all like it.
It’s gonna be a bit long but I found it fascinating so—
So first important thing is, this is based on research studies I found & theories I know, as well as my own observations, & may not be absolutely perfect because of that. But for the purpose of sharing information I’m going to tell you the theories & findings & build from there. Just bear in mind these aren’t set in stone & knowledge could change in the future - this is based on recent/current findings & understanding.
((& I don't want any arguing about the theories, the existence of ADHD, the addictive nature of caffeine/sugar (that's not the central topic here), or the way I formatted this in replies/reblogs please))
——
So many of you may know that ADHDers are affected differently by caffeine (coffee) than non-ADHDers (& neurotypicals). It’s actually been so consistent that I can tell if someone is ADHD or not based on their reaction to coffee - even before they’re diagnosed. It’s generally accepted that stimulants affect ADHDers differently. Coffee/caffeine usually puts ADHDers to sleep, or makes them drowsy, or makes them very focused, & it’s sometimes baffling as an ADHDer that some people can drink coffee to feel energized & jittery (it feels like a lie sometimes). That’s not to say that people who aren’t put to sleep by caffeine can’t have ADHD, but it’s very common to be put to sleep/calmed down by coffee.
Based on my personal experience with coffee, I’ve had a 20 ounce black coffee put me to sleep for four hours. I also, just yesterday, had a 20oz sugared latte & ended up hyperfocusing on this (topic of infodump), rewriting an intro template we made around a year ago, & writing stories (a special interest of mine) for around 6-8 hours total.
Now I think I might know why.
So I suspected the other day that maybe it had something to do with dopamine, & I did some research on how caffeine affects the brain. But because I also know sugared coffee (e.g. syrup-flavoured lattes, which is what I prefer) seem to have a different affect (especially depending on how much sugar you use), I looked into how sugar affects the brain too.
——
This is gonna use a few technical terms so I’ll explain them first for anyone who doesn’t know—
Adrenaline/Epinephrine: “A hormone your body can release (especially when you’re under stress) that increases blood circulation rate (quickens heart beat, strengthens force of heart’s contractions), breathing speed, & carbohydrate metabolism, & prepares your muscles to be used. It’s part of the human ‘fight or flight’ response to fear, panic, or perceived threat. An adrenaline rush can feel like anxiousness, nervousness, or pure excitement as your body & mind prepare for an event.”
Adrenaline Simplified - It gives you heightened energy, excitement, strength, & alertness, & a lot of it will make you jittery, anxious, or panicky.
Serotonin: A neurotransmitter compound which constricts the blood vessels and acts as a neurotransmitter. It’s responsible for influencing/stabilizing mood, feelings of well-being & happiness, cognition, reward, learning, memory, & numerous physiological processes (nausea & vasoconstriction (narrowing (constriction) of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls to slow blood flow)).
Serotonin Simplified - reduces depression, regulates anxiety, heals wounds, stimulates nausea, maintains bone health, helps with sleeping, eating, & digesting, & regulates happiness, well-being, & mood stability; it’s a soother & a happy chemical. A lot of it will make you extremely energetic & jittery.
Dopamine: “A neurotransmitter compound. When dopamine is released in large amounts, it creates feelings of pleasure (happiness, achievement) & reward, which motivates you to repeat specific behaviours; low levels of dopamine are linked to reduced motivation & decreased enthusiasm for things that would excite most people. It controls mental & emotional responses but also motor (physical) reactions. Known for being the “happy hormone”; responsible for the experience of happiness. The anticipation of most types of rewards typically increases the level of dopamine in the brain (anticipatory pleasure), & then you get a larger dose later when you get the reward.”
Dopamine Simplified - It’s your happiness/pleasure response to achievements, rewards, praise, etc. It functions as both motivation & reward, & when it’s functioning properly it’s what keeps you focused on tasks until they’re done.
Residual Dopamine: Dopamine that’s “floating” around in your brain, ready to be deployed as needed to motivate you & help you get through less fun tasks.
Temporary Dopamine: Dopamine that you get as a reward from things like beating a level in a video game, winning the lottery, etc. (accomplishments); is released after an accomplishment or event is over.
Note that typically, these chemicals (dopamine, serotonin, & adrenaline) are supposed to be balanced, & they’re supposed to be generally not very difficult to get. In mentally ill or some neurodivergent brains, however, these chemicals are imbalanced.
——
Now that the technical stuff is out of the way -
Caffeine lowers your serotonin levels, majorly increases dopamine, & releases adrenaline.
Sugar raises all three - serotonin, dopamine, AND adrenaline.
So sugared coffee will raise serotonin, dopamine, & adrenaline levels.
So how does that make them affect ADHDers differently?
——
This part is based on something called Low Arousal Theory (& no that’s not sexual).
Basically, the theory states that what makes an ADHDer appear inattentive or hyperactive has to do with dopamine in the brain - both how much we have & how easy it is to get it.
ADHDers, according to this theory, have lower residual dopamine. This causes an imbalance between dopamine and other neurotransmitter compounds/hormones.
Because of this, then, ADHDers have to rely on temporary hits of dopamine, both to focus & to boost their mood. There are often less ways we can get enough dopamine, since our brain doesn’t pre-produce enough & we thus need more dopamine total to be able to focus. So we end up hyperfocusing on anything that automatically gives large doses of dopamine - which usually ends up being things like TV shows (binge watching), video games (blackout hyperfocus where you play for hours & lose time), & social media (like, scroll, comment, scroll, lots of feedback/reward).
——
(Note in this case sugared coffee can mean coffee with sugar cubes/physical sugar added, coffee with sugary creamer added, coffee with milk added coffee with sugar syrup added, coffee with flavoured sugar syrup added, & coffee with any combination of those added (because those will all add at least a little sugar); & black coffee means coffee/espresso with not even milk added)
So if black coffee raises your dopamine levels, that means, for non-ADHDers, that it makes them energized, jittery, anxious, motivated and alert. Sugared coffee has a more significant/amplified, but similar, affect & this often shows up as shakiness & inattentiveness.
Non-ADHDers will get an artificial imbalance & a whole lot of dopamine, adrenaline, &/or serotonin. Since they already have enough dopamine naturally, this spike causes hyperactive/inattentiveness.
For ADHDers, however, their dopamine levels are low, so black coffee will cause an artificial imbalance but will leave the ADHDer with enough dopamine (higher levels of dopamine) to be motivated to do tasks & focus, & this usually causes focused drowsiness in small doses. Large doses (usually 20+ ounces of black coffee) will put the ADHD brain to sleep.
Sugared coffee though, for an ADHD brain, will cause an artificial balance with higher levels of dopamine, so this usually creates either blackout hyperfocus (medium dose of sugar + medium (16-20oz) coffee), calm focus (large coffee (20-32oz) + some sugar), or amplified hyperactivity (small coffee (8-16oz) + a lot of sugar or large coffee (20-32oz) + a lot of sugar; jittery, jumpiness, running around).
((Note the oz are an estimate & will vary depending on your personal tolerance for caffeine & sugar))
Essentially, sugared coffee could have a similar affect to prescription meds for ADHDers who don’t trust meds, get bad side effects from meds, or aren’t allowed meds? (I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it or say anyone should ditch their meds to try it, especially since coffee can be addictive, but I found it fascinating either way (since it explained (potentially) why black coffee could put me & other ADHDers to sleep).)
It also means being put to sleep by coffee, or suddenly able to Do The Thing™ because of coffee, is ADHD culture. (/lighthearted)

Roll for Initiative, a Rumbelle D&D Fic
Summary: Tales of the Enchanted Forest was the hottest online D&D game, in part for its charismatic players, in part for the twisted turns of the DM's mind and in part because of the outrageous chemistry between its greatest OTP, the party's beautiful bard and the Dark One, an anti-hero side-character who is there to provide information and uncomfortable levels of UST. Mr Gold thinks it's a harmless flirtation that could never become anything else, just like his silly little crush on the town librarian, Belle French.
He's wrong.
Rating: Explicit.
Author’s Note: Surprise, @argoslight, it is I, your Gifter! Sorry to make you wait till near the end but I just had way more banter to write in me than I thought. I hope you enjoy your gift. I’m so sorry to not be able to add more D&D elements but since I don’t play I don’t have a lot of idea of what could be done. Also I apologise for any mistakes! And thanks so much to @little-inkstone for her help and D&D knowledge.
The castle was quiet when she entered, her steps echoing against the stone. It was gloomy inside, curtains obscured and decor sparse and sombre, the castle living up to its name. But there were flowers on the table, moon lilies, her favourite flower. They bloomed only in the Eastern Mountains past the Old Wall, but she had long since suspected he grew some on one of his enchanted hothouses, with the excuse of using them for potions.
“Where’s the rest of your pretty little troop of do-gooders, dearie?”
The voice came out of nowhere, echoing around the empty halls of the castle. Thankfully she did not need directions, knowing exactly when to turn and where to go. Soon she found herself in a vast room, with a table on the centre and curios filled with oddities and the like. Some others were displayed on pedestals, including a rather fearsome sword and a nasty-looking crown made of thorns. None of the artefacts were what she sought, but she was not there to bargain for an item, but rather for information.
“Off on their own quests, taking care of other things that need doing.”
The voice tsked, seeming not to approve.
“They let you enter the lair of the beast alone? Some heroes.”
The woman lowered the hood of her cloak and walked towards the unlit chimney. Immediately a fire blazed to life, as if the castle itself was trying to cater to her comfort. The fire provided much-needed light as well, revealing the profile of a man in the shadows. Or something that looked like a man, at least, if not for the reflective scales that covered his body and its strange eyes: gold irises around catlike pupils.
“I asked to come alone. I felt like we could talk more openly this way.”
She removed her cloak, ostensibly to drape it across a chair near the fire and let it dry. The creature, however, seemed to read more into the gesture, tsking again.
“You come here all alone, a pretty little lamb, and take off the only real bit of protection you have. Reckless, dearie, most reckless.”
The creature stood up, walking slowly towards the light, revealing more of its form as it approached her. Leather pants and a long, reptilian-looking vest and coat. It wasn’t particularly tall but power emanated from it in suffocating waves. She closed her eyes, finding his cloying presence strangely comforting. Then again, she had always been odd.
“Once again your pitiful little party of friends needs my help. How they weigh you down, Beauty.”
He stepped fully into the light then, revealing a being more creature than man, the reptilian skin and claws as off-putting as his unnatural eyes. She should’ve taken a step back, should’ve gone for her blade or the dagger tucked into her left boot, but she didn’t. As much as she knew she shouldn't, she felt at ease in his presence. Well, perhaps not quite. She certainly felt a strange sort of anxiousness in his presence, a fluttery sort of feeling that she attributed to being particularly attuned to his magic. None of the other members of her party felt that way. If anything, he repulsed them, which wasn’t something she could understand. To her he was… magnetic.
“Are you in the mood for dealing or not? I can trade for information.”
He snorted.
“With what? Your little band of misfits is dirt poor. That idiotic paladin of yours ruined your last mission. You really should think about ditching the man. All brawn, no brains. At least your rogue is a smart woman.”
His gaze left her briefly, running down the length of her clothing: sturdy black boots, a nicely-cut dress that stopped around the knees and a sturdy belt with a few pockets for her spells. But the clothing, as well-made as it was, was dated, old. Looked worn and was signed and stained in places, and it left a lot of her frail human skin exposed. She had not been able to afford an upgrade in a while, preferring to spend her coin in what could benefit the group.
His moue of distaste disappeared once his eyes fell on her cloak. Well, his cloak, since he had been the one to make it. It was a lovely thing in varied shades of green, shot through with golden thread, his trademark. She had bought it off him a long time ago, a simple thing to keep her warm during cold nights and dry when it rained. Miraculously, though, it also did not sustain damage, looking exactly the same as when she had first put it on.
“I’m glad at least my protection is serving you well.”
He ran a claw along the seams of the cloak, making it glitter, like to like, magic calling for its own. He looked smug, as if pleased she was wearing something he had made.
“It does more than we bargained for. I’ve been blasted with magic strong enough to burn through most fabric but it has not even frayed. How strange of you, Rumplestiltskin, to lose out on a deal.”
He shivered when she said his name, walking behind her to the safety of the shadow she cast next to the fire.
“Can’t help it if my magic is just that powerful, my dear. I’m glad you are a happy customer. Always thought that cloak was a nice bit of magic. Can’t fault you for always wearing it.”
She felt him close in on her from behind, to the point that it almost felt like they were touching.
“It smells like you. That’s why I wear it all the time.”
The noise he made behind her was inhuman, a cross between a whimper and a growl. His claws scrapped against the back of her dress, the feeling muted by her stays, but she could feel his breath against the back of her neck and that alone was-
“Hey, this is a decent stream! Keep it PG for the kids, you weirdos.”
“Damn it, Grumpy, I wanted to see how long it would take them to snap out of it!”
“Sorry, Snow, but I ate a big dinner and I aim to keep it down.”
The messages in the chatroom wheezed by, mostly disgruntled complaints about their OTP never catching a break. The other participants in the stream were mostly silent, their mics muted likely to hide the amused snickers. There was no video feed on any of the members of the party, all of them represented instead by artwork to preserve their anonymity. Once upon a time that had been a fanciful choice, and perhaps a way to stay safe when interacting with strangers on the internet. Now it was mostly to keep their private lives from being overtaken by the popularity of their stream. “Tales of the Enchanted Forest” was shaping up to be one of the hottest D&D online streaming shows, already on its third campaign and counting.
“Beauty is just trying to get us some answers, Grumpy. We can’t just go stumbling about hoping to run into some fairy wand by chance.”
“Oh, it’s that what the kids are calling it these days?”
“Enough! Can we get back to the campaign already? It took me weeks to plan and it kinda hinges a bit on the Dark One helping, which needs to happen today.”
“Fine by me, dearie, if the dwarf can curtail his temper.”
The party was composed of five characters, a paladin, a cleric, a bard, a rogue and a thief, which along with the Dungeon Master made up the regular cast of every weekly stream. But given the popularity of the show, and the amount of time they had been playing, they had managed to amass a good amount of side-characters, guests invited every now and then to help the campaign move along and keep the interest of the audience. And by far the most popular of those guests was the Dark One, a wizard of unknown lineage and tremendous power that served both as an antagonist and a pseudo-ally depending on the situation.
His presence was likely the reason why the livestream’s numbers looked so robust. He had amassed quite a fanbase, due in part to the commitment the player put on the character (the voice-acting was above and beyond what anyone could’ve expected from an amateur performer, and the backstory was quite complex, revealed in bits and pieces fans had meticulously assembled together) and in part to the chemistry he had managed to develop with the group’s bard, a half-human named Beauty.
“Okay, let’s all go back to what we were doing.” The DM’s voice was authoritative, though also more than a bit pissed off. “Okay, Beauty, you were about to try and cajole the Dark One to sell you the information you needed in return for a vial of water from Lake Nostos. Though the water is valuable, it’s not guaranteed to be enough to tempt the wizard. You have to roll at least a 13 in persuasion to make the trade. Roll when you’re ready.”
...
Rumford Gold stretched within the confines of the small backroom of his shop, where he had his computer stuff set up. Initially he’d bought the computer to better conduct his online business. His laptop at home wasn’t cutting it and it was better to photograph the antiques, update the website and handle the deliveries from his place of business. He had bought a good camera, some light fixtures and, on a whim, a microphone, for instances where he might need to virtually communicate with clients. It was something that was happening more and more, especially because a lot of his clientele was European. The internet had truly turned his antiquing- more of a hobby than a profession originally- into a profitable business.
He had gotten into watching D&D while waiting late at night for a client to become available in Austria. He had played as a lad, one of the few happy moments he could remember from his childhood in Glasgow, but had given it up once he had met Milah. And after they were over he had been too involved in making something of himself to remember past childhood enjoyments. But apparently D&D had evolved with the times and he had gotten into the habit of searching for and watching online D&D campaigns in his spare time. From that to actually being a side-character in one of them took almost no time. It was frightfully easy to go back to that frame of mind of playing make-believe, only now he had a distaste for the clean-cut heroic types and more of an affinity for the morally-grey, shady characters.
So he had auditioned for the role of evil-wizard when there had been an opening for a side-character in his favourite D&D stream, The Enchanted Forest. And though the DM had written what he considered to be a very flat, uninteresting character, he had been able to give it his own spin. He knew the DM hated him for it, hated when he deviated from what was expected of him, but people loved him. It was half the fun, pissing the DM off.
The other half, he had to admit, was Beauty. The one with the brains in the group, clearly, a half-human, half-fairy bard with an uncanny ability to think ahead, and arm herself with knowledge. Most of the other members of her party were more apt to try and decapitate something than negotiate with it, or even befriend it. Beauty prided herself on more of a gentle approach, which sometimes got her treated as the “fragile” one. He thought it just made her all the more interesting.
Their flirting had just kinda happened. He was half into it before he realised it had begun at all and by the time he had grown conscious- and self-conscious- of it fans were lapping it up and loving it. Even the DM, as loath as he was to admit it, found the banter engaging, even as if stole the spotlight from his story and where he wanted it to go. So every now and then he got invited into a stream, sometimes to interact with the whole party and sometimes, like the session he had just finished, to speak only to Beauty. And what was supposed to be a brief conversation before the party moved to greener pastures became a whole session, with the chatroom full of engagement and the view count off the charts.
But the DM had had a short tolerance span tonight, and had nipped things in the bud much sooner than usual. He felt… unfulfilled. Unsatisfied. Itchy, almost, in a way. So he was more than happy when he received an email from Beauty, who seemed to share his dislike of how the session had played out. They had started doing that more often, sharing emails after a session, even when he did not participate in it. It was harmless, he thought. Just an innocent online flirtation that could never realistically turn into anything. Not that his more in-person romantic overtures could ever pan out. He was in his third year of being completely smitten by the local town librarian, and in his second year of being able to put two words together in front of her without the help from Scotch, something he was perhaps a bit too proud of. And though he had decided very early on that the whole thing was utterly hopeless he had not been able to steer his thoughts or affections away. Realistically he was perhaps more in love with the idea of Belle French than the reality itself, given how little he had personally interacted with the woman. But he knew just enough to fill in the blanks and create a beautiful picture of how he imagined her to be: bookish- an easy assumption given how many times he had caught her in public places absorbed in a book-, kind, generous and delightfully able to hold a grudge and enact revenge when the time came. A bit reckless, and sometimes quick to form opinions, but also quick to revise them. A tactile person, with a great sense of fashion and a carelessness about what was expected of her.
He saw her in his head as clear as day, but little of that image was based on any personal knowledge of her. So, perhaps, he had found in Beauty a fictional substitute, someone he could talk to, and flirt with, without consequences, adopting the persona of someone more confident, more at ease with that sort of thing. The Dark One was comfortable in his skin in a way that he could only pretend to be sometimes. All the money and power he had accumulated over the years had helped him evolve from the spineless, cowardly lad he had once been, but when it came to certain situations, especially those that necessitated a level of vulnerability, he was still hopeless.
Perhaps, he wondered, it was better to think about his online liaison with Beauty as the real thing. They wrote to each other often, in and out of character, and over the course of their correspondence he had confided in her more than he had in any other person alive. Small things at first, every day peeves and details. Nothing that could identify them, certainly, but surprisingly intimate nevertheless. And over time it had grown to stuttering confessions and barings of the soul on both sides. She had told him of her teenage years in a mental asylum, the product of an overwrought widowed father trying to do right by his grieving daughter. He had had a few choice words to say about that, uncharitable thoughts about her father prompting his own willing sharing of the sad story of his childhood, neglectful father and all. It had felt nice, to confide in someone, someone he trusted.
He glanced at her email, where she lamented how their scene had not been as long or as satisfying as she had wanted, and saw she was proposing to meet later in a private stream to finish it the way they had both wanted. She had proposed something similar once or twice before and he had politely declined but now he wondered why not take her up on her offer. What was stopping him? His imaginary idea of Belle French, who in reality had never given him more than a polite smile in passing? Too young, too good, too beautiful to ever see him as anything other than an old cripple? Whatever he had built with Beauty felt infinitely more real, and attainable. A relationship without ever meeting in person seemed ideal in many aspects and, perhaps, if and when it came to meeting in the real world, his physical shortcomings would not be relevant, nor would it his rather uncharitable reputation.
He sent her a quick reply to arrange a meeting, feeling like a bit of roleplaying was, in the end, quite harmless. And if it were to lead to something a bit more meaningful, well, perhaps it was about time.
…
“Water from Lake Nostos. A key ingredient in most powerful potions and even some spells. I’m sure it could prove useful to you.”
The bard showed him the glowing crystal vial hanging from a long chain around her neck, with the glowing milky-white water from the cursed lake in it. He made a move to get closer to inspect it but the woman took a step back, tucking the vial back inside her bodice. The wizard’s eyes lingered there, hiz gaze growing intense. The bard felt her skin flush in response, something that felt a bit like fear but wasn’t running down her spine.
“And I’m sure a new wardrobe could prove useful to you, dearie. You’re practically wearing rags.” Rumplestiltskin made a show of running his eyes up and down her form with just enough disgust in his face to make it seem as if he was only noticing the rather sad state of her dress.
“It’s my best gown, I’d thank you not to insult it.”
He made a moue of disapproval, shaking his head for good measure.
“You’re far from your days as a princess. I hope seeing the world is worth putting up with your band of idiots that waste most of the gold they earn with your wit in pointless goose chases that you know will lead nowhere.”
Beauty didn’t respond. There was nothing she could say to contradict what he thought of her party, none of which was charitable to say the least. And she also knew that he was aware that all of it was worth the freedom she had won when she had left her life in her father’s castle behind. She did miss one or two things, perhaps. Her mother’s vast library being one and, perhaps, some of the fashions. Not so much the silhouettes- she had never liked how the sea of petticoats she was always forced to wear restricted her movement- but the fabrics and colours, certainly. And the shoes.
“I’m here to make a deal, Dark One. Are you doing business today or not?”
Lesser creatures would’ve rather bitten off their tongues that throw cheek at the Dark One, but Beauty did not even bat an eye, lips curling in a defiant little smile that had the wizard smirking, something like admiration blooming in his chest. It’s what he loved most about his little bard, her spine of steel. And perhaps her blue eyes, but that was neither here nor there.
“I don’t do business with raggedy urchins, dearie. If you want to sit down and negotiate you’ll need a bath.” He made a face, as if he could smell her across the room. “And a change of dress, while I put your current outfit to wash… Or set it on fire, I haven’t decided yet.”
She could tell that he was pulling his punches, that he was playing at being repulsed by her state of dress and hygiene just bad enough that she would see he did not really mean it, not in any real way. She would’ve been able to tell either way, but it was nice that he thought it important to spare her feelings. And she couldn’t deny that a bath sounded heavenly after so many weeks on the road, sleeping out in the open and washing in freezing-cold creeks whenever possible.
“Well, if you insist…”
He took her to a well-lit and spacious bathing chamber, with the biggest copper tub she had ever seen, already filled with warm, soapy water that smelled of vanilla. She wasted no time after the door closed behind him, stripping quickly, careless of her worn and mended garments, and slipping into the tub. It was heaven on her tired muscles, and her dirty skin, and though she would’ve stayed there for hours she knew that every minute spent bathing was a minute less with the Dark One. Their time was limited. If she didn’t return to camp in the morning her party would venture into the castle, likely thinking the most dreadful scenarios. She could picture Charming attempting to kick the front gate open and getting hurt for his troubles. She could not let them worry for her, or risk the rapport she had developed with the Dark One by coming in unannounced.
She got out of the tub with only a bit of reluctance and found a towel that she was convinced was enchanted to dry her faster than possible. She found clothing laid out in the adjoining dressing room, the undergarments soft and made of pale cream fabric and the dress of a lovely velvety, forest-green fabric, with a belt embroidered in small pearls that matched the detail about the neckline. She put it on gladly, twisting every which way to lace it up at her back. Living a less princessy life had made her acquire a number of small skills, including the ability to dress up mostly by herself even in gowns that did not lace up at the front, like most of her travelling clothes.
She did not spot her mauve travelling dress or her boots, but she was sure that Rumplestiltskin had whisked them away and would subtly mend them with magic, though she was sure he would deny it if she were to point it out. The green dress was accompanied by matching slippers, butter-soft and silent as they touched the stone floor. She made sure to dry her hair out, noticing how it shone red-gold in the flattering light of the candles, and took her time brushing it and styling it out of her face, so it fell flatteringly down her back. Her neck and most of her upper torso was bare but for the chain keeping the vial of water tucked safely against her breasts, the wide neckline of the dress dipping low enough to leave her collarbones bare, but she didn’t mind it. She was inside the Dark Castle, with the Dark One. She was safe there. On the road she always had to think about not attracting unwanted male attention. Here she rather felt like the opposite.
It was a silly infatuation, and many would argue any interest or desire on her part was due to the wizard’s power, which some would say was an aphrodisiac potent enough to make some look past the Dark One’s rather unfortunate exterior. No one would ever believe her if she confessed she rather… liked his appearance. The green-gold skin, the wild hair, the talons, but also the exquisitely-tailored pants and vests, the frothy cravats, the slim coats. A beast and a gentleman. A rather enticing combination, she had found.
She went downstairs into the trophy room once more, where two massive chairs were pulled up next to the roaring fireplace, the main source of light. The Dark One was sitting in one of them, a snifter gingerly held by a clawed hand, containing some sort of brown-gold liquid. He glanced at her the moment she entered the room, unwilling or unable to hide his appreciation for what he saw. He had removed his coat, leaving only his high-collared vest and one of his open shirts to cover his upper body, no forty cravat in sight. He seemed less guarded, more adventurous than he usually was when it came to matters of intimacy.
“You clean up well, dearie. Wish I could say the same for your dress. A wash will only do so much for it, but I refrained from throwing it into the fireplace. You’re welcome.”
“Good, as it’s not your property to destroy.” Beauty sat down, with a poise that betrayed her royal upbringing, and primly crossed her legs at the ankles. “So, Dark One, are you prepared to deal with me now?”
She had dealt with him dozens of times before, she had no idea why it all sounded so much like innuendo now. She couldn’t say she minded it.
“Of course, my dear. I’ve had time to think about our deal whilst you were splashing about in the tub.” His sing-songy voice broke, getting suddenly deeper for a second or two, as if he was struggling to retain his composure. “The vial is certainly a good start, but perhaps not quite enough. Now, I’m prepared to be generous given our long and fruitful history of dealmaking together, but I must also keep up certain appearances. So I thought I would also demand… an evening of your time.”
He tried to make it sound sinister, but she was past getting scared of him. At least in the traditional way. She raised an eyebrow, adopting a rather coquettish expression.
“And what would an evening of my time entail exactly?”
“Oh, well, you know. Companionship, perhaps a game of chess, some good wine, conversation and the like.”
She made a show of thinking it over before offering her hand, which he shook without delay.
“It’s a deal.”
Several hours later she had won two games of chess, one game of checkers, and was sipping from her third coupe of sparkling wine as she listened intently to a story about a deal the Dark One had once made with a king from a distant land. He was a gifted storyteller, engaging and funny, knowing exactly when to pause or gesticulate to keep the flow of the story just right. The king in his tale was rather unfortunate, in the sense that his hubris and arrogance had led him to make a deal with the Dark One that he did not understand. Most of Rumplestiltskin’s deals seemed to be like that, Beauty thought. And when he came to collect people dared be indignant that he demanded what they promised in the first place.
“The king was furious. Never let go of the grudge. Hired several assassins to try and kill me. A waste of gold, of course.”
He let out a trilling laugh, which soon proved to be contagious. Somehow, over time, it felt like their chairs had moved closer, because if she stretched out a hand she could easily touch him. Odd.
“Serves him right, for making such an open-ended deal. What a rookie mistake.”
She didn’t recall removing her slippers but she must have, because her feet were enjoying being pressed against the soft cushion of the chair. He made a gesture for her to lean close, which was a bit of a balancing feat, but she managed. Her heart skipped a bit when he leaned close too, almost pressing his mouth against her ear.
“You have no room to talk, sweet. You struck a very vague deal yourself, committing to an evening of conversation, chess ‘and the like’. That little turn of phrase is an invitation to all manner of sins, even the darkest and most decadent of debaucheries.”
He hissed the last part, making her shiver. Not content with letting him have the upper hand she turned her head so their lips were inches apart.
“That’s what I was hoping for.”
She could tell she had shocked him into inaction. Cocky Dark One, always in control of the conversation, always one step ahead of everyone else. It was nice to see him floundering, to catch him unprepared. Finally he gulped and put a little distance between them.
“Aren’t you the bravest little poppet.”
“My mother always said ‘Do the brave thing and bravery will follow.’ I’m a firm believer of the principle.”
Slowly, almost painfully so, both his hands clutched at the armrests of her chair, effectively pinning her to it. She knew she was supposed to be scared but she felt nothing but excitement, a buzzing just beneath the skin that made her strangely needy for something. Touch, perhaps, or more. The feeling was so overwhelming she did not realise at first that the laces of her dress were coming undone, as if invisible hands were painstakingly pulling them loose. She tried to make eye contact, but he ducked his head, pressing his face against the base of her neck, where it met her shoulder. She sighed, noticing how gentle he was, his touch feather-light, and discovering that she would not mind a rougher treatment. He was restraining himself, she realised, trying to be a gentleman. Sweet, but not what she wanted from him at that moment. Feeling bold Beauty carded a hand through his hair, pressing his face more firmly against her skin.
“Please, Rumple.”
Those two words seemed to have a magic of their own, producing a sudden and radical change in him. He moved too fast for her to see, wrapping her up in his arms and depositing her on the long dining table on the other side of the room. She did not know whether he used magic or simply moved inhumanly fast, but either possibility excited her, reminded her of the power of the creature looming over her, claws tugging at the unlaced bodice of her dress, dragging the velvet down to expose her undergarments. She was wearing the underbust corset he had provided over the snowy linen shift he had also left for her, so it was easy for him to simply tug the shift down a bit to expose her breasts. He leaned forward, nuzzling the space between her breasts, making a sort of satisfied purring noise as he sniffed up her clavicles and down her throat. Then, once he was happy with the level of squirming she was doing, he finally gave her what she wanted, closing his mouth, with all of its sharp teeth, around one of her rosy nipples. It was a strange feeling at first, more unfamiliar than pleasant, but when he began to suck it changed completely, little shocks of pleasure running from her nipple to between her legs. It was amazing, more than she had ever achieved with her own hands whenever she could get some privacy at night, and the feeling doubled when he grasped her untouched breast, his long claws estimulating the other nipple.
She sunk both her hands in his hair, fisting it in an effort to keep herself from squirming too much, feeling both aroused and impatient. She kept waiting for him to tire of her chest and move further down but when he was finally done sucking her nipples his head moved north, his lips blinding searching for hers till they were kissing. It wasn’t anything like any kiss she had experienced before, not even the unpleasant smack her former fiance had forced on her. Though it was just as forceful there was a wild quality to it, one she had never associated with the affectionate gesture. It was heavenly, the release of passion, far from cooling her down, setting her on fire, stoking her need for him till it felt like she would explode if he didn’t give her relief.
He must have sensed it, her desperation calling to him like a siren song, because at some point he let go of her mouth to travel south, past her aching chest, and velvet-covered belly to where the skirts of her long gown kept her modestly covered. He wasted no time dragging the heavy fabric up, letting it pool around her hips along with the white linen of her shift. She did not have any other undergarments, having not been provided with any, so she was completely exposed to his gaze, from her milky things to her round hips. She squirmed, trying to picture what he must be looking at, the trim thatch of chestnut curls at the apex of her legs, obscenely drenched by this point and making a poor show of trying to hide the pink, glistening flesh beneath.
“What a lovely cunt you have.” His voice was dark, guttural, a monster trying to speak like a man. It thrilled her. “Let me drink from it, precious.”
He didn’t wait for her reply, choosing instead to simply bury his head against her flesh, his tongue rough and wide as it lapped at her field parting them to seek out the bundle of nerves that was throwing for attention. She arched her back, feeling like it was only her firm grip on her thigh and hip what kept her anchored to the table. She fell into a rhythm of sorts, her body seeking out something she could not find but his mouth striving to compensate, to give her what she needed. It was heavenly and seemed to last an eternity, the sensations building up till everything but them faded away, all sensations muted. She felt him move to, thrusting his hips against the edge of the table, making it rattle in a way that spoke of his sheer brute force. It was heady to have someone like Rumplestiltskin, who had always strived to don the mask of a gentleman around her, be so unhinged, so animalistic. More than anything it was that complete loss of control what drove her over the edge. She cried out, feeling her inner muscles coil and her senses spiral out of control, her orgasm leaving her dizzy. It seemed to last forever and not nearly long enough. She laid there for a while after the feeling passed, feeling satisfied and wanting at the same time. A few seconds later he also keened, slumping against her still-parted legs, his hair tickling the soft skin of her inner thighs.
They lay that way for what seemed like ages, while they scrambled to try and collect themselves. The afterglow did not feel awkward or uncomfortable, and it loosened up her tongue enough to venture out that she had hoped for an even more intimate act, a joining that was even deeper than what they had done.
“A deal for such a prize would have to involve all my deepest secrets, my most valuable truths.” He paused, pressing his forehead against the silky inside of her thigh, like a penitent would. “One day, perhaps.”
...
“Do you want to meet? I think it’s time.”
The orgasm had mellowed him out, otherwise he was sure he would’ve at least panicked a little bit. But in the afterglow of what they had just shared, albeit virtually, a meeting did not seem like such a bad idea. In hushed voices they arranged the time and place, tomorrow at a café and bistro in Boston. Nice and public, for both their safety. They knew both lived near Boston, so it seemed natural to pick the city. The drive wasn’t too bad, and he hoped it wasn’t a great inconvenience to her either.
Reluctantly they said their goodbyes, both trying to prolong the moment a bit more till they were both close to nodding off. With a final, reluctant goodbye they both disconnected, leaving Gold to clean himself up and make his way home. With his rumpled suit, disheveled hair and five o’clock shadow it must have looked like the walk of shame. It certainly didn’t feel that way.
...
He woke up in a happy mood, perhaps the best in a long time. Far from feeling stupid or embarrassed about his little bit of roleplaying-turned-porn-session he felt smug, empowered by the notion that he had made a smart, desirable woman come with only his voice and imagination. He felt like he was on the brink of something, as if an exciting possibility was opening up for him.
He went about his day with a bit of a spring in his step, though most citizens of Storybrooke would be pressed to notice. It was only when he saw the book on gardening he was due to return to the library that afternoon- his two Moth orchids had developed small water-soaked spots on the leaves and he had wanted to consult some verified sources instead of relying exclusively on Google search results- that his mood dampened somewhat. As nice as last night had been- bloody fantastic rather- it did make him sad, somewhat, to give up his crush on Belle French. However unattainable it was still nice to have it, that bit of feeling that did not need to be reciprocated to be real. It had been nice to feel something for someone for a change, to look forward to each smile and each small conversation. But it wouldn’t be right, and what he had now was more valuable in any case. Perhaps, with time, he would grow out of his infatuation with the librarian and they could be friends. That would be rather lovely.
He crossed the street towards the library around three o’clock, wanting to beat the rush caused by children being let off school, a busy time for one of the only kid-friendly places in Storybrooke. There were some patrons about, and the afternoon light made the library look truly beautiful. Miss French truly worked miracles with her limited budget.
He found her easily, shelving a few books in the poetry section, and tried not to preen when she smiled widely at him.
“Mr Gold, hi! Always a pleasure. Here to return a book?”
The librarian was always sunny and welcoming, but she looked even happier that day, an excited sort of energy practically rolling off of her in waves. Thank goodness he had decided to give up on his silly little crush, otherwise he might have buckled under the power of her brightness.
“Yes. And you look particularly happy today, Miss French, if I might say so.”
The librarian smiled even more, if possible, and leaned close, as if to tell him a secret.
“I have a date tonight.”
It hurt, the slightest bit, the shock making him take a step back, but less than it would have yesterday. And perhaps, he reasoned, this would be good. This would put them both in the path of becoming friends, allowing him to leave his crush behind much faster. He forced himself to enquire politely after the lucky man, listening as she talked about someone she had been flirting with for a long time now, and it seemed like the relationship was finally ready for the next step.
“I’m really happy. And very nervous. It feels like such a risk, after all this time building something that could easily fizzle out with a first date. But I’ve always believed in doing the brave thing, and bravery will follow. It’s what my mother always said.”
She had turned back to shelve a book as she finished the last sentence, so thankfully she did not see his jaw drop and his eyes widen, his surprise so visible no one could’ve missed it. His heart lurched in his chest, sheer and sudden panic making it difficult to breathe. Fuck. Fuck. It wasn’t possible. Belle was Beauty. Belle was Beauty. He tried to contradict the notion in his head but he had known Beauty’s British accent was passable but fake, and it made sense for him not to have identified her voice when she usually spoke with her natural Australian drawl, something he associated so closely with her. Everything else he had ever found out about Beauty, in and out of the D&D setting, coincided with what he knew, or thought he knew, about the librarian, one of the reasons why he had developed a crush on her in the first place.
The initial shock was followed by a spike of elation and then a sinking feeling of dread. He needed to cancel. She would be disappointed, but more disappointed if he didn’t and she realised her crush was a man a good deal older than her that was known for being the town monster. It would be awkward and she would not be able to escape him after it, both doomed to meet each other often, given the small size of the town. He could not put her through that.
He stopped himself then, noticing the familiar dark turn of his thoughts, dipped in so much self-loathing it was almost stifling. And he wondered if he really was thinking about Belle or about himself. Being a coward, taking the easy way out. He thought about how he had woken up, the world full of promise and the future bright with the possibility of something great on the horizon. And how he had felt brave last night, to leap into something that had been so worth it. Perhaps it was time to be brave more often. Do something, however small. Put the ball in her court, somehow.
“I wish you the best of luck, then. Perhaps some other time, if you’re not too busy, you could pop into my shop. I have a few antique books I feel you would appreciate.”
It was a nice recovery, and he was happy to see her smile, apparently welcoming the proposition. Everyone knew Mr Gold’s shop was only to be entered when making deals. He didn’t really allow idle perusal of his stock and no one had the money or interest to buy his antiques. His business was conducted mostly with people from major cities on the East Coast.
“Wow, an open invitation to traipse into Mr Gold’s shop, that’s not something one sees everyday. What do you want in return? I hear only deals can grant you access to the shop.”
She made sure to make it clear she was joking, something he appreciated. Feeling emboldened by her kind gesture he adopted a slightly higher pitch and replied:
“Oh, nothing much. Companionship, perhaps a game of chess, some good wine, conversation and the like.”
Being close enough he got to see as it dawned on her, as her brain quickly processed what he had said and where she had heard it before. And he knew, knew because of the way she looked at him, as if she did not recognise him, as if he was a brand new person to her, that she understood the implication, what he had meant to tell her without actually telling her.
“Hope to see you soon, then. Good luck with the date.”
He turned around before he could second-guess himself, feeling terrified by what he had exposed but satisfied at the same time. This way it was Belle’s choice to show up. For all she knew he had no idea that she was Beauty. She could make up an excuse and simply not meet her, and their worlds would never merge. If she did not want to pursue anything between them all she had to do is cancel the date, or not show up. He would respect her decision and never push for anything, or acknowledge their online relationship in the real world.
He sent her an email just as he was about to get into his car, letting her know that he understood that this meeting was a bit of a risk and he would understand if she backed out at the last minute. There were other things he could do in Boston, and he was not adverse to having dinner by himself. And they could still be friends, no matter what she decided. He was halfway to Boston when he heard his cell phone ping, letting him know he had a new email. As he expected, it was from Beauty:
“I’m on my way. Can’t wait to meet you! See you soon.”
He smiled.

thoughts on raya and the last dragon
i watched the film last night and stayed up just a lil bit to type up notes so excuse any spelling. critiques not in chronological order and also i watched it without subtitles so i had to look up the names on wikipedia
holy crap i love this whip-sword it’s awesome and so beautifully done
twist would be much more powerful if raya and namaari were shown to have a stronger emotional bond despite their nations having icy relations (and not just having met for what, one day?)
kinda confused as to what the characterisation of younger raya was set up for? her enthusiasm for war is juxtaposed with her father’s peaceful beliefs and 6 years later this doesn’t get addressed as much, although one could say her going after the fang girl was the triumph of her ‘war’ side
sisu’s design (and all the dragons really) irks me in that it’s too human- besides the pastel colours which i absolutely abhor (there’s not really any contrast, is there), the fact that they’re ancient creatures, having lived 500 years ago and are literally magic, why do they have to look like humans?? i hate it when in fantastical worldbuilding human features are given to species that absolutely do not need them
i for one am mad that the concept design which had black outlining the eyes and mouth and gold on the gill things wasn’t used, and it looked perfect for a water dragon with its very koi-like patterns
but for what it’s worth, props for steering clear of western dragon anatomy! asian dragons tend to be more snake-like rather than lizard-y and so the gratuitous shots of sisu snaking through the sky made me appreciate her design a little bit more
holy crap i love this whip-sword
the function of the gems confuses me: since sisu is shown to still have powers despite being away from the gems, why are they important except for warding off the druun? since the twist was realising the pieces had to combined and they had sought to collect the gem pieces before sisu ‘died’, what was their goal??
there’s a surprising amount of fight choreography for a disney movie, and it’s actually cool? like it’s amazing with the weapons, but when they both dropped their weapons and just went at each other with nothing but pure hand-to-hand combat I was so happy
love the parallel between the crossbow pointing at sisu and the sword triggering the crossbow
the whip sword is awesome
lowkey thought the blue stone in the dragon pendant was gonna be the last piece of the gem that namaari didn’t even know she owned à la over the moon but was pleasantly surprised they didn’t stick with that!
the huge guy with the baby is best duo
the hatred on raya’s face when she stormed into the palace was amazing and the fight that ensued had some really cool lighting holy-
can’t believe I'm saying this since I went in this movie unusually happy it doesn’t promise any romance, but the tension between raya and namaari and especially the fight scenes? unparalleled- take that what you will but between Raya’s sword and Namaari’s double blades, something is indeed going on
finally! a final fight where the side characters actually helped in the battle! bonus points for raya to realise what they were doing was more important and heroic than what she was at that moment
her distrust for namaari was what triggered the crossbow and her realising taking the first step to trust was the only way to lead the others to do the same...!! just wished she’d shown a bit more guilt or remorse at being partially responsible for sisu’s death
Not me gushing over the rain running down the stone statues and gradually falling away to reveal them still being alive because the textures
why oh why did the other dragons have to be back?? at first I thought raya’s naïveté at dragons being the only solution to peace was gonna be her lesson, that dragons don’t magically make the world better and you can’t bring peace without initiating it yourself- which kinda turned out to be true, she did save the world by initiating trust, so why are the other dragons back?? if the first magic didn’t save them, why did the second?? biggest criticism of the film so far (edit: comments have suggested raya and co. putting their trust in the dragon’s magic was what brought the dragons back, which, fair enough. but alas my desire for the dragons to remain stone still stands)
the whip sword
i pedantically have an issue with the ending boat scenes that concluded one adventure after the other- this director loves offscreen dialogue over a wide shot of the boat, which is fine BUT the dialogue always starts way too early and the volume never lowers to a suitable distance and it’s annoying me
some lines do seem to start too early, before the visuals cut to the next shot, without letting the scene breathe but maybe that’s just my lagging
there are some places where the split screens and special effects don’t serve the scene all that well and are only there to look cool (which on its own is a good enough reason but cmon disney!) like the beginning fight where there’s a really short shot of a split screen of raya and her dad, where her dad’s screen enters when he utters one line of dialogue before sliding out of frame. a lot of times this feels too videogame-y instead of a film
overall, this is a story that could’ve been told by anyone, but ultimately in its execution this movie is undoubtedly very disney. i have this nagging feeling that if this were made by some other studio, raya’s inner conflict of saving her dad rather than saving her world would have been focused on a lot more instead of the dragon stuff
and also, the fact that saving her dad = saving the world (it practically requires the same steps: retrieve the gems, un-stone everyone) really doesn’t drive the conflict between raya’s personal goal and the ‘right’ thing to do
to me, disney movies have a very general and surface level message that’s applicable to all ages and they package it very well in cool animation, good music and quality voice acting; it stops there at the thematic elements, however, and doesn’t go deeper than that.
raya’s desire for vengeance is very quickly resolved upon her facing the demon-things and realising she needs to trust, thus righting her priorities cleanly and swiftly. but raya stands out from other princesses in that she believes the world is broken, having being broken herself, and no longer has hope in the world- her quest is to solely bring her dad back.
this I feel like could have been touched on and explored in really cool ways, but it didn’t, which was what I expected anyways. disney has perfected their formula for safe, generally good movies, and doesn’t even try to dig deeper into the stories they choose to tell, which is an absolute shame because this is such a cool concept!
can’t you tell i love the whip sword

Ferrum Ch. 6
Link to Master Post
They were being over run.
For every monster Peter took down, two more took their place.
This was a mistake— they never should have come here. And it was all his fault.
“Peter! Get out of here!” yelled Tony from across the room, where he was dealing with his own hoard.
“No! I’m not leaving!” Peter yelled back.
“Damnit Kid! We can’t beat this on our own! You’ve gotta go!”
“I’M NOT LOSING YOU AGAIN!” screamed Peter as he slashed through the last monster in his immediate vicinity. He needed to get to Tony, something was about to happen, he just knew it.
He spun around seeing Tony faced off with two monsters. He was smiling a pain-filled smile. Almost like when—
“You’re not losing me kid, because I’m—”
Tony’s eyes widened as a blade ran through him from behind, where another monster stood hidden in the shadows.
“I’m… Iron Man.”
Peter couldn’t breath.
He tried to walk forward but his feet wouldn’t move.
He needed to move. Tony hadn’t disappeared yet. If he could just get there before…
Tony fell to his knees, his hand held up in front of his face, which was contorted in confusion. As Peter watched, lines of burning energy began coursing through Tony’s body.
“Why Peter… why didn’t you tell me…? Why didn’t you help…?”
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I tried!” sobbed Peter as he too fell to the ground.
“It’s ok, Peter,” came a familiar, soft voice from beside him.
Peter slowly looked to the side, and there knelt Aunt May.
“Aunt May, I tried… But I couldn’t and he’s gone. I can’t…”
“It’s ok, baby,” she said, her hand gently running through his hair. “I know you tried. It’s just that everyone you love dies. That’s just the way it is.”
Her words were like a knife directly to his heart. They hurt. More so because they were true.
All around him stood his loved ones— Ned, MJ, Happy, Mrs. Leeds and Angie, his parents.
Uncle Ben.
They stood there with sad smiles on their face.
Until they shattered into polygons.
“Why?! Why do they leave?” cried Peter.
“You know why Peter… Everyone leaves,” said May, before she too shattered into nothing.
—————
Peter woke with a start.
Waking from nightmares was always an awful experience, but now that he was regularly sharing a room with someone it was especially stressful. He couldn’t let Tony know how bad his dreams were. If he knew that, he’d press into what they were about.
And he couldn’t explain that. Not without admitting to a lot of half-truths and lies.
So he just laid on his bed while his nerves and emotions roiled. Experience told him trying to go back to sleep was pointless, but getting up risked waking Tony—
Peter looked towards the other bed, only to sit up in confusion when he saw the bed empty.
Where was Tony?
Peter checked the lower left corner of his display for the Aincrad local time… definitely the middle of the night.
Concern about questions related to his nightmare was replaced with concern over Tony’s whereabouts, so Peter slipped on his shoes and stepped out into the hall of the inn.
Despite the late (early?) hour, the tavern down below still held a decent amount of people. A handful were slumped over on the table, obviously looking for a warm place to sleep but unable to afford a room. Others sat together over glasses of ale talking amicably into the night. But he found Tony sitting over by the hearth alone, helmet on and nursing what looked like a cup of that coffee drink they called ‘kaf.’ After their trip back to the Town of Beginnings a few days ago, Tony had gone asking around about where he could get his hands on the ingredients to make the stuff. Turns out getting the ingredients was the easy part, actually making a decent cup of the stuff required some points in the cooking skill. Despite that, Tony continued to make and drink his awful concoctions.
For a moment Peter considered just going back up to their room. But the thought of going back and lying restlessly in bed was as unappealing as sleep itself.
“Hey, you know that stuff won’t actually wake you up, right?” said Peter as he plopped down in the chair across from Tony.
“Just like the alcohol can’t make you drunk,” said Tony. If he was surprised by Peter’s appearance he didn’t show it.
“Wonder what the point is in incorporating them at all then,” said Peter.
“They’re habits. Good or bad, people depend on habits. Just another thing to lull us into a sense of normalcy. If we’re in here long enough, people will probably start to forget that they’re trapped in a digital prison, and begin to wonder why we’re fighting to get out,” said Tony, before taking another sip.
“Hmm,” hummed Peter, before settling into quiet, staring into the flames of the fireplace.
They sat there in companionable silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts, before it was broken by Tony’s voice, soft with question.
“Are you sure about this Pete? Word is a good two thirds of the dungeon is explored already, but several hundred have died in the last few days doing so.”
Peter didn’t answer immediately. In all honesty, he wasn’t sure about it. In typical form, his hesitance had little to do with his own safety and everything to do someone else’s.
The memory of his dream and a creature running Tony through with a blade from behind returned.
No. Peter Parker wasn’t sure at all.
But Spider-man… Spider-man knew what needed to be done, and he did it.
He had managed to keep Tony from taking any hits so far, he would just have to keep doing it. He would get better. Faster. Stronger.
He would get them out of this game, and then he would find their answers as to where Tony was and how he had come to be in this game. Did Ms. Potts— er, Mrs. Stark know he was still alive? If so, why hide it?
“Considering our uh… RL life choices, there’s a pretty good chance of us dying on any given day,” said Peter, trying not to choke on the words, memories of blood and stones and ash rising. “I’d rather die doing the best I can to help others than sit around watching others die instead. It’s what I’d do in the real world, so its what I should do here. We’ve talked about this. All the way to Tolbana, in fact.”
“Yeah, I know,” said Tony, in the same uncharacteristically soft tone.
“How about you? Just because I’ve decided to work on clearing the game doesn’t mean you have to. I could probably find a clearing party to join up with. I’ve heard a few parties talk about setting up guilds even,” said Peter, with mixed feelings. On one hand, he really didn’t like the idea of letting Tony too far out of his sight. On the other, if he stayed back Peter would probably worry less about keeping Tony alive and could focus more on his own battles.
Tony scoffed at the idea though, so Peter guessed that was out.
“There’s no way in hell I’m sending you off into that labyrinth without me,” Tony replied.
“Well, guess that settles it then,” said Peter with finality.
“Right. Well, I guess I’ll go and check our equipment before we head out, since we’re both awake. Unless you want to try and go back to sleep?” asked Tony, standing up and slipping down his visor.
“Nah, I’m awake. So we can head out whenever. You did sleep some, right?” asked Peter as he stood as well.
“I slept as much as I need to,” answered Tony evasively.
Peter rolled his eyes. Tony’s sleeping habits in the game were as bad as they were outside of it.
“Ok, I’ll go pack up then.”
—————
The floor one labyrinth was a cavernous maze of halls and chambers crawling with Kobold Troopers— the first humanoid monsters they had come across in the game. Unlike the previous creature types, they could use sword skills like players and NPCs. This made Peter's 'don't let Tony take any hits' job far more complicated than he had expected.
"Damn it, kid! Stop taking my hits! You're going to get yourself killed!"
"No I won't, I'm careful about keeping an eye on my HP," responded Peter as he swallowed down a potion.
"You wouldn't have to keep such a close eye on your HP if you would just stop throwing yourself into hits!"
“Well, if you would stop getting yourself into positions where you’re going to get hit, maybe I wouldn’t need to! You’re not in an impenetrable armor anymore,” Peter grouched back. But as soon as the words left his mouth he regretted them.
He couldn’t see most of Tony’s face through the helmet’s visor, but he could tell by the tightening in his posture that the words had hit harder than he had intended.
Peter sighed, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. You’re not the reason I’m getting hurt. But you really do need to stop leaving your back open. You can’t take hits in a fight like you’re used to, and there’s no FRIDAY to keep an eye on it. Just me.”
For a moment Tony didn’t answer, but eventually he nodded.
“No, you’re right. I’m used to having a margin of error in a fight because of the strength of my armor or FRIDAY having my back. I’m not used to being so squishy when I fight. Rogers used to gripe at me about the same thing,” said Tony. “Which was pretty hypocritical on his part considered how he threw himself into things— I guess I’m not too surprised about that at this point— but the fact still remains true. Sorry, I should be better at this than I am—”
“I don’t want an apology. And I know habits are hard to break. Just… try to keep more of an eye on it?”
“I will, but I also want you to stop taking all the hits. We’re both about the same level, so I can take a few as well, you know. I won’t shatter on contact,” chuckled Tony, though Peter could tell it was forced.
The visual of Tony shattering into polygons wouldn’t leave Peter’s mind.
“No promises, so you better keep up your guard,” muttered Peter, before he started walking further into the labyrinth.
From behind him he could hear Tony sigh in exasperation, but he followed along at Peter’s back.
In every RPG Peter had ever played, when you ‘entered the dungeon’ you traveled down through floors until you found the boss room. In SAO’s labyrinth it was all an up-hill journey with no definitive floor levels, plenty of trick rooms, and not a soul to be seen. He had snagged the map data from a large group of Clearers he’d met in the pub their first night in town, but even with four more days of exploring it, there were still massive chunks of blank spaces. One of which they were mapping out now, and five hours in they had yet to stumble on another player. All Peter could say was that they had to be nearing the top of the column soon. Or at least he hoped so. Enough people had died in here already.
The halls were mostly silent as they trekked through the labyrinth passages, the only sounds Peter could hear was the soft echo of their footsteps.
Eventually they came upon a turn into another hall, and as soon as Peter saw what lay beyond, he froze.
It was the Boss Room. It had to be. Rough hewn stone walls were replaced with smooth slate, and the double door set into the wall before him was like nothing they had seen in the labyrinth yet. Three times the height of an average person, ornate lattice scroll work ran from top to bottom down the middle of each door, with a central metal push plate featuring two intertwined serpents.
Tony came around to his side and gave a relieved sigh before pulling up his map. “Finally, I’ll update our map data with a notation.”
Peter nodded absently feeling lightheaded. They had actually done it. They had found the boss room. Just a little longer and they would move to the next floor…
And once they had proven they could… Maybe things would get better.
Peter smiled and turned to ask Tony if he wanted to head back to town now…
That’s when he heard it. The faintest sound of the shuffle of feet from the darkness.
“Mob!” shouted Peter, drawing his sword just as the first Troopers rushed them from the shadows.
Tony quickly switched into fighting stance, drawing his two-handed sword and parrying a Trooper’s slash away.
As Peter jumped into the fray, he tried to do a head count.
One—two—three…
Four—Five—Six…
Definitely outnumbered, but so long as he kept an eye on them it should be fine.
Vertical— horizontal— slant—
The trooper burst into polygons. From the corner of his eye he could see Tony disperse of another trooper.
As they fought, on habit the two of them drifted together until they were back to back.
A well placed sword swing shattered another kobold, only for another to take it’s place, its barbaric hand axe coming in for a hit.
Peter wasn’t quite quick enough and the hit landed, taking some of his HP down with it. Peter would not give the kobold another chance at a hit, and in a few moments it was dispersed just like the rest.
Over all, the kobolds were not especially difficult. But for every one Peter felled another took its place…
Then another.
And another.
This was far more than the six he had originally counted… they just kept coming.
Just like his dream…
He couldn’t think about that. He couldn’t. It was just a dream.
‘Everyone leaves.’
His next strike hit a little harder than he meant, causing the kobold he was fighting to shatter but also causing him to stumble forward away from Tony, allowing a kobold to step into place between them.
Fear froze him as he saw the kobold raise it’s axe overhead, coming in for a direct hit on Tony, who was turned away, unawares.
“TONY! BEHIND—!” screamed Peter, trying to get to Tony.
It was like slow motion. Tony turned, but the axe was nearly on him already. He wouldn’t be able to block. He wouldn’t be able to move.
No, no, no… he couldn’t do this again, he couldn’t—!
“DON’T TOUCH HIM—!” Peter cried, as he slashed his sword wildly.
He couldn’t reach him in time!
The axe struck true.
But it was stopped by a purple polygon with an identification tile that read ‘Immortal Object.’
For a moment Peter’s mind went ‘blue screen’ while it tried to compute what he was seeing.
Tony on the other hand didn’t seem to pause for a second, rather he threw himself with abandon into the throes of the fight, no longer bothering with attempts at defense, letting each hit bounce off the strange shield that apparently kept hits from connecting.
Peter pulled himself together, swallowing down a potion before returning to the fray. After a few more rounds the waves of the mob tapered off until only Peter and Tony were left standing.
Well, standing was relative. As soon as the mob was finished Peter sunk down to the ground, his head in his hands as the mental fatigue of the battle along with all the ones before it came crashing down on him.
Immortal Object.
“Come on kid, we need to get out of here. There’s no telling what the re-spawn rate is this close to the Boss Room door,” said Tony, putting a hand under Peter’s arm to pull him up.
Peter stood up and followed along as directed, keeping one hand on Tony as they went. Every now and then they would come across a pair of Troopers, but Tony easily dispatched them and they continued on their way.
Peter wasn’t sure how long they had been walking, but at some point he realized he could hear the sound of voices up ahead.
As they turned a bend a party of players came into sight. The player at the head of the group was a man with blue hair, dressed in bronze armor with a longsword at his hip.
“Hey!” called Tony, waving them over.
Most of the group eyed with some suspicion, but the blue haired one walked over, a small but amicable smile on his face.
“Yes, do you need help?” he asked politely.
“Nah, we’re alright. You’re part of one of the larger clearing parties, aren’t you?” asked Tony.
“Yes, in fact I’m the leader of the group. My name is Diavel,” he answered.
“Good. Look, we found the Boss Room up ahead.”
That certainly got their attention. Diavel’s eyes widened for a moment and his face lost its politeness and settled into a more serious gaze. He glanced at Peter, who knew he was showing obvious signs of exhaustion.
“We didn’t open it so I’m not sure what’s inside, and we were swarmed by a large Trooper mob right afterward,” Tony said, answering the unspoken question. “If you open your map I’ll give the info to you.”
Diavel nodded, opening up his map. A few taps later and the exchange was done.
“We will go back quickly and start gathering a raiding party this afternoon. Should I expect to see you there?”
“No, I don’t think so. Just make sure this info gets out,” said Tony, a hand Peter’s shoulder as he starts to move away.
“I will see it done,” said Diavel, with a nod. “Everyone, lets hurry back to town! There’s work to be done!”
And with that the group turned and ran, presumably back towards the entrance to the labyrinth.
“Alright, that’s done. If you need to stop we’ll stop, but otherwise we’re going to keep going until we’re back at the inn. Don’t worry about anything other than putting one foot in front of the other, I’ll take care of rest,” said Tony, as they began to walk in the same direction.
Peter did as he was told, and put one foot in front of the other.
Step, step, step…
Immortal Object.
Step, stumble, step…
“I can’t remember things passed a certain point…”
“The last thing I remember is the meeting with Kayaba…”
What did it all mean…
Step, step, step…
“I’m thinking of skipping on meals for a while. I’m kinda curious how long it takes to actually start feeling hungry in here.”
Put one foot in front of the other, Parker. Almost there…
“I slept as much as I need to.”
Immortal Object—Immortal Object—Immortal Object—
AI Development
Peter stopped.
Peter couldn’t help but wonder… Was she aware of what she was?
No. No way. No fucking way—
“The problem was that in order to do further development and testing it would require me to deep dive into their systems, and for reasons I’ve discussed with you earlier today I was entirely unwilling to open myself up to that.”
“Peter… Hey, are you alright?” asked Tony, a worried crease in his brow that was so familiar. “Are you still with me, kid?”
Was it even possible? Who was he kidding, if anyone could figure it out it would have been him. But then how did it— he— end up here?
“Ok, now you’re really starting to scare me kid.”
Unbidden, the memory of the mural from the night he entered SAO came back to him.
Slowly, Peter started to take steps again.
“Good, that’s good. One step at a time and we’ll get there,” said Tony.
Peter did as he was told, and he slowly made his way out of the labyrinth while trying to come to terms with a fact he couldn’t look away from.
Mr. Stark was dead. He always had been.
Tony was an AI.

Year in Review - Animal Crossing New Horizons
I started writing this review/criticism in May of 2020 but decided to update it as the year went along and post it on the anniversary of NH’s release. I would like to preface that this is mostly going to be full of questions of criticisms, I love this game. I have not been able to put it down since I got it on March 20th. My first AC game was NL and then I played HHD. I was ecstatic when they announced NH at E3 2019 and kept trying to find other games to fit in my AC shaped hole in my heart but I wasn’t able to fill it till this game came out. I feel like the pace of the game is great with how you build up to unlocking terraforming and 5 stars, and I feel like the updates are well timed especially with how crazy 2020 was for everybody. That being said there were some things that irked me.
Some of the points I will bring up came from other people/commenters I have seen on here, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter that I also agree with. Some other points are from Youtubers such as ShayMay and ChuyPlays. And others are from me.
With that out of the way, let’s get on with the review. Warning, I guess, don’t expect this to be an essay, this is just a patchwork quilt made up of thoughts.
Terraforming
I wish cliffs/tiers had a smaller level? Like how we’re able to make stepping stones for our rivers if we don’t want to put a bridge down/use our vaulting pole. I just wish there was a cliff alternative.
Another cliff alternative would be if we could put bridges between cliffs. I think we’ve all been there where we see this picture
thought ‘we can do that!!” then realized it was photoshopped
When we go into terraforming, I wish a grid showed up on our island. It would make it much easier to avoid hitting the wrong square when I’m trying to change a river.
Having us be able to “close” a waterfall from a lower level but not create a new on at the same spot.
Also the fact we can add a 4th tier but can’t put anything on it is just strange to me. I know we have to have a limit to how high we can go, but at least let me put nature stuff, such as trees/flowers/bushes, on top of it instead of just a flat piece of land.
Houses
Why no ceiling items? Find it odd they added a bunch of stuff in HHD and didn’t add that to the new mainline game
There’s no reason I can think of to why we can’t access our storage when we’re crafting inside our house.
Buildings
Dodo Airlines
The Dodo Islands right now are very boring and barely use them. I have enough money and materials to not go farming and save up all my NMTs for when I go villager hunting, which has also become a rarity. I think it would be a good idea to make some islands seasoned themed. Have them be all rare, but have an island where it’s fall and has maple leaves falling, a cherry blossom one, one with snowflakes. I wouldn’t recommend they make Holiday themed ones, but having seasonal ones would be nice.
When I mess up a dodo code or accidentally hit ‘make a bridge’ instead of incline, etc. why do I have to restart the ENTIRE conversation instead of the characters just being “oh? did you mean “x” or “would you like to retype it?” like is it that hard??
Resident Services
As much as I love Isabelle this game has made me very indifferent towards her. I think they gave her a role that didn’t need to exist. They could have either let us roam around without any warnings to who was roaming around our island, in the campsite, or any weather updates. Just have us rely on our villagers, the TV, and our eyeballs. OR they could have given us a social media like app and/or a weather app. Instead, they gave us Isabelle that only announces something once a month.
Nook’s Cranny
This might just be me but can they add a little DIY area in the store? Maybe just make to where you can only customize things?? This is more out of convenience than an actual problem
Speaking of customization, since you can make medicine but also buy can we do the same for the custom kits and bait. Like make it where we can buy bait and also make our own custom kits? I just think it’s weird that they give us either/or for medicine but not for the other 2 that I honestly use way more than medicine.
Why do the Able Sisters get to have all of the colors of an item in their shop but Nook’s Cranny can’t? And why can’t we just be able to customize all items that have multiple looks/colors? Example, why can’t I just be able to change the wood type for the antique set instead of having to buy each one? I get that the furniture catalog is already small, but that’s not my fault. They’ve decided to not add past furniture sets into NH.
Able Sisters
Let us multi select clothes instead of it just being how much we can wear. idc if it’ll just put those clothes in our personal storage and then we’ll have to run home and put it in that storage, I just hate having to walk back in and out every time I want a dress in multi colors. ALSO tell us if we already bought it, like a little storage icon or something
Why can’t we hang any article of clothing on the back wall, why do we have to either make it or have the OG qr designer come to our island?
Why can’t we have the transparent option when designing clothes? I think it would make many designer’s lives easier instead of having to make 8 versions of the same outfit.
NPCs
I have played this game almost every day since it came out, minus 2 days. I have also been able to make friends on discord that help with trading/cataloging/etc. I have all of Saharah’s, Kicks’, Label’s, and Redd’s items. I have all of the fish/bug models I want and have no desire to “catch them all”. I haven’t talked to Wisp in months because I have most of the items and his idea of “expensive” is 10k bells. The only NPC I actively look forward to is Celeste because even though I now have all of her DIYs, she still gives out star fragments, regular large or horoscope, when I talk to her.
What I’m wondering is if they’re planning on doing anything else with these characters. Before I speak further I’m going to weed out characters that I am actually fine with. CJ and Flick will always be there if I want a bug/fish model, I understand that Saharah/Kicks/Redd have a ton of stuff to get and w/o the help of my discord friends, I probably wouldn’t have gotten everything till late 2021.
So that leaves Label and Wisp. I understand Wisp is there for beginners, but now that I’m at a point where I am a bell millionaire and have most of the Nook’s items cataloged, there is no reason for me to talk to him. I wish Nintendo had put in a system where depending on the person who Wisp is talking to, it determines how much money you have in your bank account/looks at your catalog, Wisp’s item’s worth goes up.
As for Label...I never saw her as viable. I also thought the tickets were dumb and you don’t even have to talk to her to have her items show up in the shop the next day. I think it would be great if when you bought all of her items, she decided to join the Able’s sisters in their shop like in NL and then have Gracie show up in her place for the weekly NPC.
Where is Blanca? Or Brewster? Or Shrunk, Katrina, Gracie, or Kapp’n and his family? I understand we will probably never see characters like Harriet or Pete because they have been replaced by a new system, but what is the excuse for these other characters? I’m hoping they show up in year 2 of NH but...we’ll see.
Villagers
I think having your first villagers living in basic homes is a good idea but one that quickly gets annoying. I found Sherb while villager hunting for the 1st time and have had him ever since, but his house is stuck at basic lazy setup. Instead of me going back and forth on whether or not i should trust somebody enough to hold Sherb, get somebody else out, then get him to move back to my island, You can have it to where you let them leave, then just wait till he comes to the campsite to visit and reinvite him. You get his actual house and he still remembers you. This could also go for you accidentally letting somebody go or letting somebody go then regretting it. Also it’d be fun to see some old villagers again.
I was curious and looked back on past games to see how many new villagers were released each game and NH has been the least amount. NL released 112 new villagers in total while NH has released 8. I’m hoping they might release more down the line but, hella disappointing imo. Along with the Sanrio update and adding those characters to the game, I am more hopeful that they’ll be adding new characters!
Having an “event” of sorts where you visit a villager’s house and they’re looking inside their closet. They look at you in surprise when you walk in and sheepishly explain that they were going through their clothes/items. They then decide to ask you for help since they can’t decide what to get rid of/what to keep and think you have a good eye for that sort of thing. Basically, a way to get rid of any clothes/items your villager somehow received bc I guess Isabelle scolding them isn’t enough.
A big problem I feel like everybody has is the villager dialogue. Yes they added sub personality types for each personality but they are not perfectly cut in half, ex. are the Sisterly types where there are 4 B types and 20 A types, like?? How I have “fixed” this problem is by having one of each personality type on my island so I always have different conversations with my villagers, but I understand not a lot of people do that. Some people just want normal/peppy types on their island bc they’re cute as hell, I get it. I know it would be...difficult to come up with unique dialogue for all 399 villagers, including Sanrio, but....you could at least for the “gimmicky” villagers. Some examples of these villagers are Ribbot and Sprocket, Lucky and Ankha, the super hero squad, and Kabuki.
Quality Life stuff
Why cant we sit AND wish on stars? And I don’t mean the sit emote; why can’t I sit on a bench and wish on stars?
It sucks when I’m about to hit my rocks or just do a lot of dig work and then my shovel breaks in the middle of it. To show the tool is about to break, cracks should start to form on the handle and get deeper/longer as you keep using it, starting when you have 5 uses left. You can also add an auditory element by making the tool sound like its struggling when you are using it. Net/Shovel/Axe/Fishing Pole can have cracks show up on the handle, Slingshot can have crack show up at the bottom of the 2 spokes while having 1 at the top of the handle. And the watering can have cracks at the base of the can.
If our inventory is full when I dig up a flower, why can’t I replace it with another flower to bury? And if I can dig up an item at an diagonal item, I should be able to bury it again at the same angle.
Other
Having more...liveliness?? on the island, idk how else to say it. Example is whenever you travel by plane there's a chemtrail in the sky afterwards, maybe just seeing other planes go by throughout the day. Maybe you can get a hint Redd or Gulliver will be visiting you tomorrow if you see their boats beyond the horizon, Redd’s just crusin’ and the Gulls’ boats looking messed up. On a week where you don't have a new camper, maybe have an old villager visit. That leads me too
I wish villager’s doors could count as “exterior decorating” and we can just put any ornamental on there instead having to hope that your villager will put the wreath on their own door.
Conclusion
If you read this whole thing holy shit, thanks!! Go treat yourself on my part lol If you disagreed with me or whatever feel free to chat with me about it!

Premonitions
Fandom: Pandora Hearts
Character Focus: Glen (Oswald) Baskervlle, Jack Vessalius, Vincent Nightray, Gilbert Nightray, Kevin Regnard, Oz Vessalius
Summary: Jack, Glen, Vincent, and Gilbert thought they were going on a relaxing vacation in the mountains, but a creature from The Abyss has a bit of an adventure in store...or is it a warning?
(Written for the Phmonth19 Tragedy Trio prompts "Wolf," "Ruins," and "Winter.")
(For those who’d like some Glen, Jack, Vince, and Gil cuteness. There's at least a little of that here, which was super fun to write. )
Notes: If you can believe it, this is actually a fic for Phmonth19! It was for the Tragedy Trio prompts "Wolf," "Ruins," and "Winter."
I liked a lot of the prompts during Phmonth19, and wanted to find a way to use multiple simultaneously. I liked the idea, but ended up struggling with where I wanted to go with it, and having too much to do during Phmonth19, so it didn't get written then. But I liked it enough to continue it and return to it eventually.
I hope you enjoy it even so!! Please know that when you comment you are both making my entire week, and motivating me to keep writing more fics like this one!!
Premonitions
A young boy weaved in and out of the crumbling artifices, hopping down from a half-broken wall to a mossy ledge on a lower level of the ruins. It was probably a room in the past. It wasn’t now.
They’d warned him not to go in here. But if forbidding something was incentive for most kids, it was practically a command to him.
They told him it was dangerous, unsafe, that anything could fall and crush him, or crumble beneath him, not to mention that there was a sort of energy here: it infected people, made them into madmen and monsters, and if said monstrosities didn’t attack and kill you…you might just become one yourself.
As if he needed a better invitation.
Most regretfully, he hadn’t found any horrifying monstrosities yet. Just a bunch of cracked stones and sewer rats looking for corpses to clean off. Occasionally something shimmered in the dirt, but more often than not it was just a rusted piece of metal, or cracked bit of glass.
He kicked up a board to see a dagger laying there. He frowned, considering it, before picking it up, examining the details on the hilt. Might make a nice souvenir if he could manage to clean the rust off.
He couldn’t help but wonder what happened here. People said this place was dropped into the Abyss, that it had become a hole to swallow all that dared to enter. But what exactly did that mean? He’d heard of the Abyss, and the Chains that lived within, but never of anything other than sinners being dropped into it. What kind of atrocities had everyone there committed to warrant the whole city being dropped into the Abyss?
He kicked another rock, before glancing up, his red eyes widening.
A wolf sat in front of him.
He hadn’t even heard its footsteps. It just sat there on the wall above him, swishing its tail. He took a few steps back.
It was gold and ethereal, its tail long and wispy, like a gust of wind frozen into flesh. Said tail flicked back and forth. White eyes left trails in the air—like slits in a mask, only letting the golden light inside it break through the eyes—yet they held no mal intent—(he’d learned to be able to see that, to feel it, almost). It seemed intelligent.
Was this one of the monstrosities they warned him about?
His hand tightened around the dagger.
The wolf stood, but after it took a few steps forward it looked over its shoulder as if to ask “Are you coming?”
The boy took a step forward himself, to run after its disappearing tail, compelled by some inclination; he knew he ought to follow it, that it wanted to show him something.
“Kevin! Kevin!” A familiar voice called from far away. “I’ll not have you sullying the Regnard name with another one of your insolent games! If you get eaten by some Chain you’ll only have yourself to blame!”
When Kevin looked back the wolf was gone.
*****
Jack breathed deeply through his nose, as he entered the cabin, then breathed out just as noisily.
“Smell that mountain air! I just love the snow, don’t you? I always feel like something’ amazing is going to happen!”
Glen rolled his eyes, dropping their bags—(which Jack had made him carry inside, citing the fact that he was carrying Vincent).
“Say, Jack…” the boy sitting on his shoulders spoke, “do you think we’ll see the northern lights up here?”
“I don’t know! …What do you think, Glen?”
“Probably not.”
“Aww!” Vincent pouted, bumping his fist on Jack’s head.
“Ow!” Jack reacted in an over exaggerated way.
“Eh! I’m sorry!”
When Jack had found out about the cabin the Baskervilles owned in the mountains he knew it would be the perfect place to spend a few days relaxing and playing in the snow—and what better way to remember how to have fun than to bring Gilbert and Vincent along?
When Jack brought up this idea, Glen had blatantly refused. Ever the responsible leader, Glen didn’t take vacations from his duties. But lately he had started having conversations with the rose bushes, and everyone agreed he could stand a few days off.
Glen was just starting to unpack their stuff when—
“You guys want to go sledding?” This was Jack’s voice, of course.
It was a resounding “yes,” from the kids, complete with jumping up and down and shouting.
“We just arrived,” Glen grunted. “Wasn’t the point of this trip to relax?”
“And what better way to relax then hurling yourself down a snowy mountain on a thin piece of wood?”
Glen blinked. “Reading.”
Jack grabbed his arm, pulling him out into the snow. “Don’t be such a fuddy duddy. Come on!”
Glen glared at his friend as he promptly dragged him off into the snow.
Soon they were flying up to the tallest hill they could find on Raven, then, after they successfully reached the top, they proceeded to push each other down it on sleds, with much giggling and whooping (from everyone except Glen). When they reached the bottom, they would fly back up on Glen’s chains—(who seemed to enjoy the show).
At one point, a little while into the festivities, Vincent was waiting for his turn when something in the corner of his eye flickered. He turned to see in the woods, behind a tree, a creature.
Vincent froze when he met the wolf’s gaze, a shiver running up his spine, more than just the cold, his face twisting in fear.
“What’s wrong, Vince?” Jack put a hand on his shoulder, glancing from the terrified boy to the empty air he was fixating on.
The wolf ran in a figure eight around two of the trees, brushing up against them, its form leaving tracks in the air. Then it paused again to stare at the boy with white, smoky eyes.
It didn’t look completely there.
Vincent pointed shakily towards it.
Jack put a hand on his shoulder. “…Where?”
He pointed more emphatically.
“I’m sorry Vince, I…I don’t see anything.”
“What’s going on?” Glen asked, hopping off Raven and landing beside them with Gilbert in a flurry of black wings.
Vincent just kept pointing, his finger a vibrating signal.
Glen’s eyes widened.
“What is it?” Jack demanded.
“It’s a wolf. Or at least…” he paused, noticing the strange color, and misty nature of the creature.
“I don’t see it,” Gilbert said softly.
“That’s okay,” Jack crouched down by him, “Neither can I.” He stood back up to his full height, reasoning with Glen, “If you two can see it, and we can’t…”
Glen nodded at him, before taking a few steps forward, and finishing the thought:
“I think, more likely than not, its something from the Abyss.” He squinted at it, watching it playfully thread the trees. “I think it wants us to follow it.”
Vincent tensed at the idea.
Glen looked over his shoulder, his eyes flicking to the boy. “I can always go after it by myself if you’d like to return to the cabin.”
“Oh it’ll be fine! Don’t worry!” Jack took the hands of both boys. “With Master Glen with us, nothing’s going to hurt us!”
Glen rolled his eyes, but Jack’s words seemed to comfort them.
Un-summoning Raven, Glen walked in front, the other three following a short distance behind.
When the spectral wolf saw they were going to heed its call, it moved further into the forest, always dancing around the trees as it waited for them to catch up.
They followed it quite some ways—(especially since they were tired from all the sledding)—until the trees stopped abruptly in a cliff edge. Jack had to put his arms out in front of the boys to keep them from walking any further.
As they raised their eyes, they saw across the gorge a plateau.
“I-Is it still there?” Gilbert asked softly, looking all around them.
Vincent and Oswald looked around but the wolf wasn’t anywhere close to them.
“There!” Vince pointed after a moment. The wolf was across the gorge, weaving in and out of a stone ruin on the plateau.
“Are you sure that’s safe?” Gilbert asked nervously. “Maybe we’ve followed it far enough…”
Glen had already summoned Jabberwocky, and was currently climbing on its back.
“You coming?” He asked the group flatly, holding out his hand.
The three glanced at each other, before Jack helped the kids onto its back, and hopped on himself. Jack hugged the boys tightly, as Gilbert held just as tightly to Glen’s coat.
The wind was cold and biting as they flew through the air, but the ride was very brief, and they landed moments later in a puff of dust in the center of the ruins.
“What is this place?” Jack asked the air, and no one answered.
They ventured cautiously into the ruins, at first sticking together, but soon curiosity overtook them, and they each wandered in separate directions, captivated by different rooms. The place wasn’t too vast though, and thus didn’t allow them to stray too far from each other.
Glen found the throne room, or where it most likely once was; a huge empty room in the center of the ruins, empty, save for the collapsing chair, backed by the skeleton of a large window, holding broken pieces of colored glass. He slowly marched up to it, running his fingers along the ghost of the chair, looking out the window at the now frozen water far below, wondering what sort of king ruled here.
When he turned around, the wolf was sitting in the center of the room, swishing its tail at him. Glen was sure it wanted him to understand something, but he couldn’t quite discern what.
He noticed at the side of the room there was a large structure. At first he mistook it for a collapsed bit of wall, but upon closer inspection, he realized it was a piano. He set his fingers on a few of the notes, but they only gave a croak.
It’d been too long.
He lifted his head and raised his voice to ask the wolf about the place, and learn if it could respond, but it had moved on.
Gilbert found the old kitchen, the food there long since turned to compost for rats and roots. Then he found the servants’ quarters not too far from there, full of rotting bedframes and hungry mice, wondering what sort of servants were here, and if their king was as noble as Glen-sama.
He didn’t see the wolf pass beneath the doorframe behind him.
Vincent found a room that likely belonged to a child. It was faded, but there was paint on the walls: designs of flowers and vines. He almost stepped on a clay sculpting of a bird that may have served as a toy, once.
On a broken dresser he found a box which, once opened, turned out to play music, the notes discordant after years of rust and neglect.
He thought he saw something else, and lifted up the half-bug-eaten board. He immediately dropped it, wishing he hadn’t, the something that was there making him cover his mouth in shock and horror.
He felt a nudge at his back, and almost screamed, whirling around to see the wolf behind him. Fear glued his lips, welled his eyes with tears.
The wolf cocked its head to the side, as if confused by his fear. It licked his hand, and Vincent drew back, though it felt like a brush of wind.
“W-W-What do you want?!” He stammered.
But he could not understand the wolf’s words.
Jack descended a staircase a bit further out of the way and found—more in tact than much of the buildings—a dungeon.
It was a large stone room, lined with cells, sectioned off by rusting bars. He pressed one open with a creak and found an empty room, and a skeleton. He continued on until he found one without a skeleton, whose bars were bent, as if the person within had managed to escape through them. He entered through to find there was a journal in this one. He picked it up, brushed and blew off the dust and frost, the pages just as creaky and unwilling to budge as the doors.
He sat on the floor where he found it and began to read. Many of the pages were too damaged by time to read, the ink fading, the pages crinkling and crumbling, but he could make out at least bits of the story. It seemed the writer was in love with a girl, but, due to her being the ruler of this kingdom’s queen, they could never be together. As the pages continued, the writer seemed to grow more and more obsessed with her; his phrases containing less and less sense and sanity. Jack couldn’t tell exactly how he ended up in the dungeon, nor how he apparently broke out—if the bends weren’t made by weather or time—but in his not-quite-sane state, he must have done something very stupid. Maybe a lot of things.
When the final pages became too illegible, he looked up and saw in the waning sunlight, the tally marks on the wall. As he began to dust and defrost them, he realized the whole wall was covered in them. He ran his hand over the grooves, thinking of how long this person must have been left alone inside himself, and what that might do to a person.
He couldn’t see the wolf pacing around his feet, reading over his shoulder, couldn’t feel the wolf trying to nudge him, nor hear the wolf try to ask him voicelessly: “Do you understand? Do you understand?”
“There you are.” A deep voice broke the silence, almost making him jump.
Glen was standing in the doorway, Vincent and Gilbert at either side of him—(Vincent clinging to his coattails rather tightly).
“Did you find anything interesting?”
Jack set the journal on the floor beside him, standing and stretching, yawning the words: “Not really, no.”
Upon noticing the pink light cast on the floor through the small window, Jack asked, “Do you think we should head back?”
Glen gave a curt nod, turning around to leave, and Jack ran to catch up.
*****
A young boy with golden hair and green eyes stood in the midst of a ruin; a caved in part of the city—or what once was the city.
After putting his hand to his chin in thought, and a good dose of looking around, he pulled a watch out of his pocket. When he flipped it open it began to play the soft tinkling notes of a somewhat sad song.
“I still don’t know what exactly happened here,” Oz muttered softly to himself, “but…I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
He didn’t see the wolf poking its head out from around a wall behind him, didn’t see its ears perk up, nor, now that someone had finally heard and headed its warning, hear its satisfied howl;
“Thank you, Dear Rabbit.”

Bulletproof Heart Pt. 1
Pairing: Gerard Way x Reader
Prompt: Request from Anon- “ could you write one where the reader is a rock singer and they and mcr are on warped tour together, and they both lowkey like each other but think they’re both out of each other’s league, and find out that they’re both secretly into nerdy stuff + maybe getting together? thank you so much xxx”
AN: This is a multi-part series--I couldn’t help myself! Also, I based this fic around something Gerard said in a Rolling Stone interview:
Hope its ok Anon! enjoy!
You had dreamed of this moment since you first picked up a guitar. Back then it felt like an impossible fantasy, being on stage with your band, playing in front of a crowd of screaming fans; which is why it felt so surreal when your manager Tim told you that your band, The Violent Delights, had booked Warped Tour.
"June 18th," he told you with a satisfied grin, "you're in for the long haul, kids."
Your band-mates let out a collective shriek of joy, while you planted a grateful kiss on Tim's cheek.
"You're an OK manager, you know that?"
"Yeah, yeah," he said, dramatically wiping his cheek where your lips had been. "Now you guys better get practicing. This is a good opportunity to really get your name out there. Plus you got some real popular acts to compete with."
Your interest was peaked. "Oh yeah? Like who?"
"Off the top of my head? Fall Out Boy, Dropkick Murphys, and I think a band called My Chemical Romance."
"Oh shit, My Chem?" your bassist, Gavin, piped up excitedly. "That's the band I'm always trying to get Y/N to listen to."
"I'll have to finally borrow their last album," you replied, "gotta scope out the competition after all." Gavin rolled his eyes while you laughed.
Your manager got serious. "It's three months on the road, and its gonna take a lot of energy and hard work. Quite frankly, it ain't glamorous."
"Tim, when have we ever been glamorous? I wouldn't care if it were a 12 month tour," you declared, "I wouldn't miss this opportunity for the world." Liz, your drummer, nodded in agreement beside you.
"You might be singing a different tune when you haven't had a shower in three days."
"As long as I'm singing it in front of an audience, we'll be fine."
* * *
Back at your apartment you marked June 18th on your calendar with a star, feeling invigorated with excitement all over again. This was it, you thought, the next level for our band. You were determined to give it your very best, outperforming every other band there.
After all, you had worked so hard to get to this point. Starting in friend's basements and tiny cafes, the band had slowly built up a sizable following of loyal fans. You were no longer the opening act, drawing sell out crowds more often than not. You made a promise to yourself that the band wasn't going to lose this momentum. There would be no distractions for you on this tour, just hard work and the thrill of performing. That meant no parties, and absolutely no boys. You weren't ready for another relationship, you told yourself, especially since the last one ended in disaster.
Yes, this was the moment the band had been waiting for. You let the warm excitement that this knowledge brought envelope you, and you lay your head down on your pillow, falling asleep to fantasies of what lay ahead.
* * *
Its a long road from Maryland to Ohio. Columbus was the first stop of the tour, which meant your band had 6 and a half hours to go over the set-list, make adjustments discuss their hopes and fears for the three month experience. Gavin gave you a few CDs to listen too, including My Chemical Romance's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. You had heard their first album ages ago and enjoyed it, but there was something incandescent to the music you were hearing now. It stirred a whirlwind of heavy emotion, and you were enthralled from beginning to end. You made a mental note to see them perform at Warped as soon as possible.
When your bus arrived at its destination, you felt the unwelcome buzz of nerves building in your stomach. This was real, you thought, this was happening. You were used to performing at this point, but it was the amount of people you'd be performing for that was nerve-wracking. Not to mention the fellow artists who may be watching and judging your sound. You breathed deep and tried to push past the nervous thoughts that hummed incessantly around your head like insects.
Your band-mates were buzzing about with excitement, but you needed to distract yourself. Fresh air always helped settle you, so you grabbed your shoes and decided to go for a walk around the venue.
It looked almost like a circus with all the trailers and tents that had quickly populated the surrounding area. Merch stands and catering tents were being organizes as dozens upon dozens of vans and trailers pulled in. There were already a few fans camped outside of the chain-link fence that surrounded the area, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of their favorite artists.
You kept wandering, and you saw that a band was being interviewed in the media tent. There were five of them, each holding a microphone; but one member, a dark haired boy, was doing most of the talking. He was cute, you thought, and your stomach did little flips watching him respond to the questions that were being asked.
You watched a little bit longer from a distance, until you felt a tap on your shoulder. You turned to see Gavin and Liz, who had been doing a bit of exploring as well.
"Hey, there you are! I was talking to a few people by the catering tent. They said some bands are having a party on their buses later tonight, we should check it out." Gavin informed you excitedly.
You hesitated. No parties. "I dunno, I want us to be in good condition to perform tomorrow."
Liz chimed in. "All work and no play, Y/N. C'mon, it'll be a great chance to make some connections with other bands."
"If you don't come with us," Gavin pronounced dramatically, "we'll be far too devastated to perform tomorrow." His hand went to his forehead, as though he was about to faint.
"Somehow I doubt that."
"Pretty please?" Liz stuck her lower lip out pathetically.
"With sugar on top?" Gavin added.
You glanced at the black haired boy in the distance. Maybe he'd be there, a small voice in your head piped up.
"Ugh Fine! But I'll only stay for a little bit."
Satisfied, the pair stopped harassing you, and left you to continue wandering, promising to meet up with them later.
* * *
People spilled out from open trailers as music blared from an unknown source in the background. Some were already far gone, stumbling from place to place, or lying on the ground blacked out.
You followed Gavin inside one of the trailers. You watched as he interacted with the strangers inside with ease, a trait you envied. He managed to find you both drinks, and you grabbed the mystery beverage, sculling it in hopes that it would numb your nervousness. You may have been a great performer onstage, but offstage it was easy for your social anxiety to take the wheel.
Gavin began to walk away, ignoring your whispered pleas not to leave you. Fuck. It always felt awkward to not know anyone at a party. You clutched your red cup like a life jacket keeping you afloat in a sea of drunken strangers.
A man approached you out of nowhere, the smell of alcohol emanating from every pore on his body.
"You look lonely." He leered at you expectantly.
"Then it seems like you need glasses. I'm just fine on my own."
He laughed. "Ooo! I like you. You've got spunk. Name's Brent, guitarist from Midnite Heist."
"Can't say I've heard of you guys."
Brent was either oblivious to your indifference, or just chose to ignore it. "So how'd you end up at this party?"
"I'm in a band on the tour too. Lead singer actually."
"No way! That's awesome, we need more talented eye candy on this tour."
You screamed internally while he droned on, tuning him out as you continued to sip from your fast emptying cup.
You scanned the room, watching people laugh and dance. Your stomach suddenly flipped again as you noticed the black haired boy from this afternoon, solemn faced and quiet, silently nursing a diet coke in his hands. He was clearly not having a good time. The guitarist who had been talking you up soon saw you looking at the sullen figure and turned his attention towards him, his eyes lighting up with recognition.
"Gerard fucking Way!" he bellowed, carelessly sloshing his drink as he waved him over, causing a stream of alcohol to fall to the floor below.
Gerard seemed to hesitate before walking over. "It's been awhile man," he said softly. His eyes, a warm hazel, flicked to you repeatedly as he spoke. "you here for the whole tour this time?"
Brent laughed, his sobriety dangling by a thread. "Yeah, but still not up on the main stage, unlike you big-shots." he said, punching Gerard in the arm. Gerard offered a crooked smirk in return, his patience already wearing thin. Brent nudged you in the arm. "This is Y/N, her band is new to Warped. I told her I'd show her the ropes." He grinned at you. Ugh.
Gerard seemed to sense your discomfort. "Welcome, nice to see a new face around."
Brent interrupted before you could respond. "How come you're wasting time with a coke? I would've expected you to be the first one wasted here."
Gerard's jaw clenched, and you cringed internally at the sheer awkwardness of the encounter. "I'm sober now," he informed Brent, "I don't touch that shit anymore."
Brent laughed dismissively. "Dude, you? Do you even remember the last Warped tour? I'll give it 2 days before you're lying face down in the bushes again." he laughed as if he had just said something hilarious.
You were livid, and Gerard was on edge. You decided to step in when you noticed his knuckles turn white from clenching his coke can.
You moved slightly, ready to get between them. "Hey you know what? I'd really love a coke right now too. Mind showing me where they are?" you looked pleadingly at Gerard. He took the hint.
"Follow me."
You gave a curt wave to Brent, who looked on in confusion before continuing his drinking binge.
You stepped outside, and the sounds from the party behind you became a faint, thumping buzz in the background. You were both silent for a moment before you decided to break the ice.
"So that guy was a dick."
Gerard's scowl turned into a thin, lopsided smirk. Your heart melted a bit. "Yeah. I just realized some of these people are only tolerable when I'm drunk."
Stop. Move away. You don't need a distraction like this. You tried to scold yourself but words kept escaping from your lips, prolonging the encounter.
"This is my first time doing Warped Tour, but I'm assuming these parties are pretty much never-ending?"
Gerard pulled out a cigarette and lit it. "Oh yeah, its every night for some of these bands. You're in for an interesting experience." You looked at him for a moment, perhaps for a bit too long. You had never seen anyone look so beautiful while surrounded by clouds of smoke.
"Yoohoooo! Y/N!" you heard the hollering of a clearly tipsy Gavin call from the doorway of the next trailer. "Where'd you go? The night is young! Get back here!"
You sighed. "That's my cue. Well actually that's my bassist, but he'll never let me live it down if I don't go back in there."
Gerard turned his head to the side and exhaled. "Catch you around. Next time you need rescuing from a douche-bag just light the bat signal."
You gave him a soft smile, forcing yourself to turn away and walk back to the trailer. As you did, you whispered aloud to yourself as a reminder:
"No distractions. No boys."

Satisfying my inner child with bubbles
Do you know the Sodastream? It is a device you use to carbonate drinks within your own home. As a child, I thought these things looked brilliant, and they were part of my dream kitchen. Of course, we were poor so we could not spend money on anything even remotely as frivolous as a fizzy drink maker. Thankfully, my mum always took fizzy drinks seriously enough that we didn’t get the cheapest ones by default - she liked proper Pepsi, and even when we did have to save money, we’d get Cresta drinks that were always pretty good.
I also love my fizzy drinks. This summer has been a bit of a pain for that reason, as inconsistent deliveries to supermarkets have left a lot of my favourites out of stock for long periods of time (thanks a fucking lot, Brexit). Even when I got them in the basket, they often just didn’t show up by the time my delivery arrived. This was very very annoying.
Lately, we’ve seen a lot of competitions for Sodastream machines, which brought them back to my mind. Of course, I had one big worry: “will the flavours be crap?” I did some research and found that since Pepsi bought Sodastream in 2018, official flavour mixes have started popping up in markets like Germany and Australia. It seemed very enticing, especially the idea of trying Schwip Schwap (an orange/cola mix), but the cost of importing the official mixes would probably be prohibitive. If only they were available in the UK.
When I went into Sainsbury’s this past Monday, this is what I saw.
Holy shit. And right round the corner, a starter kit for £50. But I did not have the money, and could I really justify it to myself? This was not a question that I had time to ponder, being very busy at work and having stuff to do in London on Wednesday. (I saw Black Stone Cherry at the Royal Albert Hall. They were excellent.) But once Thursday arrived, I had both time and money. Doing what any reasonable man might, I did my usual online shopping - and once again, no 7up Free in stock. No Pepsi Max Cherry either. I completed my order, including a 24 pack of Tango Dark Berry that I was sure wouldn’t arrive, and then I immediately marched to Sainsbury’s and made an incredibly frivolous purchase.
I was able to justify this to myself for three major reasons. The first one, you’ve probably guessed - I’m sick of my favourite drinks being out of stock. The second is a matter of economics. These 440ml bottles claim to make 9 litres of finished drink, when prepared according to instructions. The gas canisters claim to carbonate 60 litres of water. If both claims hold, it’s a decent saving when compared to cans and bottles, even in bulk. The final reason is that fizzy drinks containers make up a large part of my recycling output, and while the cans and bottles don’t go to landfill, recycling still takes energy and I should do my best to reduce my waste generation.
So here it is - and it’s bigger than I thought, as it doesn’t actually fit under my kitchen cupboards. The good thing is that it doesn’t require power and therefore can go anywhere. It’s also pretty simple to set up, to the point that the instructions are fully wordless, Ikea style. I installed the CO2 canister in the back and washed up the bottle that was included. For what it’s worth, the 1 litre bottle that came with the machine is apparently not dishwasher safe, though supposedly the ones they sell on the website are. As someone who doesn’t own a dishwasher, this is of no consequence to me. They also do 500ml bottles.
I filled the bottle up to carbonating capacity (840ml), and then chilled it. This is because I’d done my research, rather than letting my giddy excitement get the best of me. Because gases are more soluble in liquids at lower temperatures, the carbonation is more effective if you refrigerate the water in advance. That’s important to note if you end up buying your own Sodastream. I gave it a bit more fizz than recommended since the Sodastream website advises high carbonation levels for the Pepsi flavours. Advice from other owners included leaving the bottle to stand for a few moments before removing it from the machine, pouring syrups in diagonally to avoid major fizzing, and leaving the finished drink standing in the fridge for up to half an hour before serving it.
I’ve got to be honest, the smell of concentrated Pepsi is not very appetising. It’s also worth noting that the syrups have different instructions - Pepsi is to be kept at room temperature after opening, but 7up Free should be put in the fridge. You’re also supposed to shake them before use, and there are three lines on the lid/serving cup - the medium one named “lightly sweet” does seem to produce the best results.
Once it’s finished, you can see that it looks like Pepsi. It tastes like Pepsi too, but not exactly like Pepsi. The reason for this is simple: you cannot dissolve enough sugar into the small amounts of liquid used here, which means that other sweeteners do need to be used too. The result is that Pepsi from a Sodastream has fewer calories and less sugar per serving than regular cans or bottles, and the taste is actually closer to that of Pepsi Max (the cans and bottles, not the Sodastream mix). Since I like Pepsi Max well enough, this doesn’t bother me. The taste of the 7up Free feels a lot closer to that of the regular bottles and cans, as it doesn’t rely on heaps of sugar. I haven’t yet tried regular 7up or Pepsi Max.
Overall, I’m happy with my Sodastream. The official drink mixes mean that I don’t miss my favourite flavours, and I should be able to keep a decent supply of them ready to go. Beyond that, I just really love pushing the button to put the fizz in. It looks cool and satisfies the part of me that always wanted one as a kid. I’ll probably pick up a couple of extra bottles so I can have both flavours at once, and my big hope is that they’ll add new official flavours - Pepsi Max Cherry, Pepsi Max Raspberry and 7up Free Cherry are all on my wishlist.

Premonitions
Fandom: Pandora Hearts
Character Focus: Glen (Oswald) Baskerville, Jack Vessalius, Vincent Nightray, Gilbert Nightray, Kevin Regnard, Oz Vessalius
I definitely enjoyed writing some! It's something I've wanted to write about for a while)
Notes: This is actually a fic for Phmonth19!
He didnt see the wolf pass beneath the doorframe behind him.
He didn’t see the wolf poking its head out from around a wall behind him, didn’t see its ears perk up, nor, now that someone had finally heard and headed its warning, hear its satisfied howl;
“Thank you, Dear Rabbit.”

anon: A platonic interpretation of Florence + The Machine's What the Water Gave Me, feels like what I'd consider Reverse Garden!Sai & Root!Shikako vibes? idk
[Verse 1] Time it took us To where the water was That's what the water gave me And time goes quicker Between the two of us Oh, my love, don't forsake me Take what the water gave me [Chorus] Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow [Verse 2] And oh, poor Atlas The world's a beast of a burden You've been holding on a long time And all this longing And the ships are left to rust That's what the water gave us [Chorus] So lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow [Verse 3] Because they took your loved ones But returned them in exchange for you But would you have it any other way? Would you have it any other way? You couldn't have it any other way [Bridge] Because she's a cruel mistress And a bargain must be made But oh, my love, don't forget me While I let the water take me [Chorus] Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow So lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow
I’m glad you liked the Reverse Gardens idea, anon! This is a pretty excellent choice for Reverse Gardens in general--though, of course, if I could figure out how to get Shisui in there somehow that would be the most excellent. :D
This next bit is unrelated to either Sai or Shisui or ROOT!Shikako, or, even, I think AUs that currently exist (or maybe they do? Oh man, I’m so bad at keeping track of them) but I thought maybe people might appreciate this as well?
---
She dodges the first blow, easy. The second, not so much, it catches her across the jaw and with it goes her sense of balance. She stumbles--not much, not enough to fall, but enough to create an opening--and a leg sweeps hers out from under her. She crashes to the ground, rocks scraping, and doesn’t even bother to get back up. Instead, she rolls, out of the way of a sword stabbed into the ground where she was just seconds ago.
She doesn’t bother to complain about the double standards going on in this fight, the teachers don’t care. Or, well, they do. But not in any way that will benefit her.
Netsui is occupied, her sword stabbed too far into the ground that now it’s stuck--if she cared at all about Netsui, she’d say something about how relying on that sword too much is more of a liability than a strength, but she doesn’t so she won’t--so that’s one combatant down, at least. Not really the one she was worried about, but one less to worry about.
Akantai is there as soon as she pops up, kick high and fast and brutal. Impressive. If it had landed, she’d have been out like a light. But it doesn’t. It leaves him vulnerable, especially without his partner to provide cover, leaves his stance too wide, weight poorly distributed. She counters with a kick of her own, low and sharp and ruthless, her force and his own mass used against him. She connects with his ankle. A snap, followed by a strangled scream, and Akantai is down.
Netsui finally pulls out her sword, ready to wield it once more, only to be met with a kunai held close and sharp to her neck. The sword is too long and unwieldy to do anything. Netsui surrenders.
“Victory to Shippai,” the teacher says with barely concealed displeasure in his voice. They’re never pleased when Shippai wins. Good. They’re the enemy.
-
The nice thing about genjutsu is that it doesn’t use a lot of chakra. If done right, if it’s small and subtle enough, it barely uses any chakra at all. What it does require is a lot of imagination, focus, and determination.
Three year old Shikako doesn’t have many tools at her disposal--what with being a three year old and all--but she does have those at least.
-
Shippai does not go back to the orphanage after classes are let out for the day. She tries not to go back to the orphanage until she absolutely needs to, either hunger or exhaustion drawing her back.
Instead she takes an extremely circuitous route around the village, shaking off her inept tails from the academy, a small hand darting out every so often to palm whatever she can reach. By the time she gets to one of her hidey-holes way in the outskirts of the village boundaries, her jacket is full of money and senbon and trinkets and food.
The perishables she eats, the senbon she hides back in her clothes, the money and trinkets she stashes for later. She doesn’t know any actual earth jutsu, but her chakra is naturally aligned that way: she sweeps a hand over her hidey-hole, the stone sliding along enough so she can add her haul from today, before she sweeps it back to close it.
Then she heads back to Hidden Cloud.
-
The Cloud ambassador successfully kidnaps a Konoha clan heiress and runs back to Land of Lightning.
The Sandaime Hokage, fearing war, does nothing.
No one dies.
The tragic thing is, this is the best outcome Shikako could think of.
-
She doesn’t have much of a range on her sensing, but what she doesn’t have in distance she makes up in detail. (Her enemies are all already so close, what does she need range for?)
It’s how she knows that the woman standing in front of her, hand pressed to her mouth in horror, is using a genjutsu. (She recognizes the feel of it.)
It’s how she knows that the woman isn’t from Cloud at all. Chakra bright and somehow translucent, like glass and crystal; fragile, still, but precise and deadly. (Some part of her feels like she should recognize it, but she’s certain she’s never met this woman before.)
“You’re not from around here, are you?” Shippai asks and the woman inhales sharply, as if wounded.
“N-no,” the woman responds, lowering to a knee so as to be on an even eye level with Shippai. (She doesn’t understand why, since it’ll be harder to react if it comes to a fight, but that’s to Shippai’s advantage so so she doesn’t say anything.)
“No,” the woman repeats, more confident this time, before she lets the genjutsu go revealing pale white Byakugan. (The part of Shippai that isn’t stunned is now especially confused as to why this woman bothered to get on eye level with her.)
“But neither are you, Shikako-chan.”
~
A/N: Is Cloud!Shikako already a thing? Anyway, I figure they’d rename her--Shippai means failure, mistake, blunder which is as much an admonishment to the Cloud ambassador as it is to belittle Shikako since, as far as Cloud knows, the Nara don’t have a bloodline and thus they have a “useless” Konoha clan heiress.
The genjutsu and the details vs range sensing and the small but potent earth jutsu (being able to do stone instead of just rocky earth) is how I think the situation would have changed her style. She’s essentially in hostile territory, she doesn’t have the freedom to do big bold stuff.
Also, with her eyes closed and hair cut, I do think a three year old Shikako could do enough genjutsu to look similarly enough to Hinata to trick the Cloud ambassador. Would she have done it? I dunno, I guess in this universe she did.

Reviewing the Best Weight Loss Diets of 2020
A weight loss diet is intended to give people who want to lose weight a better chance of achieving their goal than if they relied on willpower alone.
Some weight loss diet programs provide all your meals for a monthly fee. Others provide shakes, snacks, recipes and meal plans. Some even go so far as to assign you a personal coach or counselor who guides you through the program answering your questions and providing encouragement and support.
The following weight loss diets have proven track records and have helped millions of people worldwide. So without further ado, here are the 10 best weight loss diets of 2020.
1. Atkins Diet
In the beginning there was the ketogenic diet, developed to help adolescents with treatment-resistant epilepsy. 50 years later Dr. Atkins came along, saw the potential of the keto diet for weight loss, made a few tweaks and gave the new diet his name.
The Atkins Diet is one of the most successful weight loss diets around because it’s based on the same sound science behind the keto diet, but it doesn’t require the same level of sacrifice that keto does. On the upside, the Atkins diet has a proven record of success and offers a variety of plans to fit individual needs. On the downside, it’s not cheap and depriving oneself of carbs for an extended period of time is not for everyone.
2. Weight Watchers
Who hasn’t heard of Weight Watchers by now? Started almost 60 years ago by then housewife Jean Nidetch, Weight Watchers (recently rebranded WW International) pioneered the idea of delivering special, low cal meals to members and providing them with a wide-ranging support network.
It’s a concept that has helped tens of millions of people worldwide realize their weight loss dreams and it can work for you. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that Weight Watchers also pioneered the tedious concept of food tracking. Otherwise known as calorie counting. But if you can learn how to make it part of your life, you stand an excellent chance of success with Weight Watchers.
3. South Beach Diet
If you’ve researched both the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet and thought they’re a lot alike you’re right. They are. They’re both based on the century-old ketogenic diet concept of eliminating almost all carbohydrates. It’s a sound approach that is practically guaranteed to produce weight loss. If you can stick to it. And that’s the rub.
Since most people’s favorite foods are carb-heavy, sticking with a low-carb diet can be challenging, to say the least. Atkins and South Beach address that challenge in different ways. With the South Beach Diet considered more forgiving. It allows adherents to gradually re-introduce some carbs later in the process and encourages consumption of ‘healthy’ fats. As such, you have a bit more variety in your food choices, especially during the later phases of the program. The downside is you can pretty much forget pasta.
4. Dash Diet
The Dash Diet was developed as a way to help people get a hold of their high blood pressure. Over time it was recognized as an outstanding weight loss diet as well. There are two variants of the Dash Diet. Both go all-in on the fresh fruit and vegetables and discourage red meat and fats. With the standard Dash Diet you’re allowed up to 2,300 mg of sodium per day.
With the low sodium variant that limit goes down to 1,500 mg per day. (Remember, this was started as a way to lower blood pressure, so low-sodium intake is a given.) The Dash Diet turns out to be fairly simple to follow and inexpensive, with lots of online tools and support. The downside is they don’t deliver prepared meals.
5. Nutrisystem
The Nutrisystem weight loss diet plan goes back nearly half a century. It was started by one Harold Katz who offered a weight loss shake and personalized counseling through a brick and mortar shop in his hometown in Pennsylvania. Since then it has grown into a worldwide weight loss diet plan that delivers prepared low-cal meals right to your door.
Their base plan is a 4-week program where you are expected to eat what they provide and nothing else. After that initial period emphasis shifts to building good habits that will enable you to reach your goals and keep the weight off. You are encouraged to continue purchasing their meals, but also given plenty of guidance and recipes should you want to transition to cooking your own meals again.
6. The Slim Fast Diet

Some folks just don’t have time to track every little thing they eat and count calories. The idea of prepared meals doesn’t really appeal to them either. What they need is a convenient way to get the nutrients they need that doesn’t interfere with their busy life. That’s where Slim Fast comes in. Slim Fast has been around for quite a while and most people are aware of the Slim Fast drinks. But not too many are aware there is an entire Slim Fast Diet Plan.
That diet plan is actually the simplest one on the market. All you’re required to do is replace any two meals during the day with either a Slim Fast shake or a bar. That’s it. No prepared meals. No calorie counting or food tracking. Just replace lunch and dinner with a shake and a couple of Slim Fast bars and you’re good to go. The potential downside is that you’re likely to tire of shakes and bars.
7. HMR Diet
The HMR Diet is more involved than Slim Fast. It’s more along the line of Weight Watchers in that it provides an array of premade meals. But it’s not as strict as WW because it encourages you to make your own meals too, as long as you’re able to stick to fresh veggies and fruits, that is. So what you have is a hodge-podge of sorts.
Prepared meals, home cooked meals, and a variety of snack bars and other peripherals to fill in the gaps. On average people on the HMR Diet can expect to pay about $10 a day for the HMR products, which is not bad. If there is a downside it’s that willpower is definitely required if you’re going to avoid undermining yourself when it comes time to cook your own meals.
8. Mayo Clinic Diet

The Mayo Clinic is one of the best rated hospitals in the world. They also have one of the best-rated health-related websites and, as it turns out, the people at the Mayo Clinic have also put together a highly regarded weight loss diet. As you might expect from an organization like the Mayo Clinic, their diet plan emphasizes building healthy habits as much as it does eating this specific food or that.
They take a holistic approach to weight loss intended to endow you with the ability to keep the weight off once it’s gone. The plan consists of dozens of healthy, low-cal recipes, apps, trackers and a journal to keep you focused on the goal. There are also personalized exercise plans designed to help you build those good habits we mentioned going forward. You’ll need to buy the book and pay for the interactive stuff, menus and workout plan. But costs are minimal.
9. MIND Diet

Older folks in particular should consider the MIND diet. The MIND Diet brings together the best of the Dash Diet (see above) and the Mediterannean Diet, while tossing in a few unique aspects. The end result is intended to not only help you lose weight and keep it off, but to use diet and nutrition to fend off the development of dementia.
The MIND Diet doesn’t cost anything and the structure is fairly loose, though you are not given a free hand. To see results you are expected to adhere to the suggested 10 foods in the recommended serving sizes. Those foods include green veggies, other non-starchy vegetables, nuts, berries, olive oil, fish and poultry. Not for everyone, but worth considering.
10. Jenny Craig

The last of our weight loss diets has been around since 1983 and has millions of believers worldwide. The Jenny Craig Diet leaves no stone unturned in its quest to guide you to the promised land of sustainable weight loss. You are expected to restrict your food intake to only what is provided to you by the program.
You are also provided a counselor who will be with you every step of the way providing both guidance and encouragement. If that kind of structure appeals to you, then you have a good chance of attaining your goals. On the downside, eating only what they provide means exactly that: eating only what they provide.
FAQs
What Is Weight Loss Diet?
A weight loss diet is a program designed to help people who want to lose weight achieve their goal. Weight loss diets take a number of forms and can be very strict, very relaxed and informal, or somewhere in between. Many weight loss diets are for-profit programs that require you to purchase meals and/or snacks from the program provider. Others charge for access to menus and recipes and some give you the option of having a ‘coach’ who will provide support, encouragement and advice. But no matter the structure of the diet program the goal of each one is the same: to help you lose weight and keep it off.
What are the Benefits of a Weight Loss Diet?
Weight loss diets provide structure. Having a structure you can mentally invest in makes losing weight easier. Trying to achieve your goals by simply saying ‘no’ to everything and hoping your willpower holds out is not a great strategy. At some point you won’t be able to summon the willpower necessary and in short order you’ll be back to square one. A structure helps you build good habits that will take over even when willpower fails.
Weight loss diets work. Not every weight loss diet is going to work for everyone. But for the most part, weight loss diets work, as long as people are willing to practice them as directed. When a weight loss diet does not work for someone it’s often because that particular diet plan was not a good match for the person’s personality. And if you think personality has nothing to do with weight gain or weight loss, think again (1).
A weight loss diet takes the strain off your heart. Few things put more stress on your heart than being obese (2). The human body was simply not designed to carry 100 or more pounds of excess weight around day and night. To do so, the heart and lungs both have to work a lot harder. And that can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease, as well as premature death (3).
A weight loss diet can reduce your risk of diabetes. Excess weight and diabetes go hand in hand. As the obesity epidemic has spread across the country the diabetes epidemic has kept pace (4). It’s a disturbing development that does not bode well for the future. A weight loss diet can remove you from the ever expanding list of people heading down the road to type 2 diabetes.
A weight loss diet can help cut your medical expenses. Obesity comes with a hefty price tag attached to it. Studies indicate that obese individuals wind up paying thousands of dollars more per year in health care costs alone (5) than non-obese people. That’s because obese individuals are far more likely to develop diabetes, have heart problems, require knee and hip replacements, and suffer an array of other weight-related maladies. A successful weight loss diet can head off these health care costs.
Weight loss diets can save your joints. We just mentioned in passing that excess weight can cause joint problems. And it’s true. Hip and knee joints were simply not designed by evolution to handle the kind of weight many individuals are carrying around these days. And in fact, studies indicate that most people who undergo total knee or total hip replacement are either overweight or obese (6). A weight loss diet can help save your knee and hip joints.
There is a weight loss diet that will work for you. Some folks assume that if one weight loss diet didn’t work, none of them will. But the truth is not so black and white. The South Beach Diet and the Mayo Clinic Diet are very different from one another. As are Weight Watchers and the Dash Diet, and Jenny Craig and Slim Fast. With so many different approaches available there is bound to be one that works for you. The key is persistence.
Some weight loss diets provide the food for you. You may not have the time or inclination to cook all your own meals. Especially if that means learning how to cook dozens of new, low-calorie dishes. But fear not. A number of weight loss diet plans deliver everything you need right to your door. And it doesn’t cost as much as you think, since you’ll drastically cut back on what you spend at the supermarket.
Weight loss diets are good for your love life. Research indicates that being overweight or obese has a detrimental effect on a person’s sex drive and performance. And that goes for men (7) just as much as women. The exact reasons for this are extremely complex and involve mental, physical and psychological factors. But there is no debating the connection. A weight loss diet can help you hit the reset button on your love life.
A weight loss diet will help you look better. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look better, or wanting to fit back into your favorite clothes. A weight loss diet can help you do both. While the health benefits of weight loss should be enough to compel a person to look into a weight loss diet, there is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight so you can look better too.
A weight loss diet will produce a cascade of benefits. Taken together the above-listed benefits make a compelling argument for taking a leap of faith and trying a weight loss diet. You will feel better, look better, have more vitality, probably have more sexual vigor, give your heart a break, fend off diabetes and much more. Even if you need to try 2 or 3 weight loss diets before finding the right one, in the end it will be worth it.
Are There Negative Side Effects to Losing Weight?
You may wind up with some saggy skin – There are numerous risks to losing weight too fast (8). One of them has to do with the largest organ in your body; your skin. Depending on how much weight you lose and how quickly you lose it you may wind up with saggy skin in some parts of your body (9). To head this off, it is usually best to embrace a modest pace of weight loss. Say, 1 or 2 pounds per week.
Losing weight could change your relationship – You may not like the way you look and feel but your significant other might be just fine with your voluptuous curves. You may be all-in on restricting what and when you eat. But that same significant other may tire of worrying about everything that’s on the table or in the fridge. This is not to say that losing weight and getting in better shape is not the right thing to do. But you should be aware that it might send negative ripples through your relationship (10).
You may be more sensitive to cold weather – The most obvious and impactful reason you’ll be more sensitive to cold weather is that you simply do not have as much insulation standing between the cold air and your core as you used to. You can offset some of that by gaining muscle. That’s because muscle tissue has three times as many blood vessels as fat tissue (11), and that increased blood flow will help keep you warmer.
You might miss your old self – The mental and emotional aspects of weight loss can be every bit as difficult to deal with as the physical act of not eating so much (12). Some people who lose a lot of weight go through an adjustment period where they either have a hard time believing their new body is real, or miss being able to eat whatever they wanted. The key to keeping the weight off is often getting through that adjustment period.
The way you experience food may change – Dieting can have a lot of different effects on a person. But one thing that is pretty much guaranteed is that dieting will change the way you think about and experience food. Instead of just eating what looks good, you’ll assess each dish for its calorie load or sugar content or some other restrictive metric. You’re also likely to notice what others are eating or not eating. And you’ll need to find a healthier way to obtain the comfort you used to find in food.
Are Weight Loss Diets Risky?
Other than the above-listed side effects, it’s difficult to find a downside to losing weight (eating disorders aside, of course). The risks of being overweight or obese typically far outweigh the risks of returning to a healthy BMI (13). In most cases, the biggest risk of a commercial weight loss diet is that you may spend money on a few programs that do not work for you, before finding one that does.
Are Weight Loss Diets Useful for Men Too?
Most commercial weight loss diets are marketed toward women, who tend to be much more aware of weight issues than men. But with some 35 million American men considered obese and another 54 million considered overweight (14), weight loss diets are taking on new relevance and urgency for men of all ages, races, and economic classes. Also, research indicates that obese middle-aged men have a 60% greater chance of dying from a heart attack than non-obese men (15). So engaging in a weight loss diet will not only help a man feel and look better, it may also extend his life.
The Bottom Line
Weight loss diets provide people the tools they need to achieve their weight loss goals. Sometimes those tools are recipes and advice. Sometimes they are snacks and shakes. And sometimes they are a support network, snacks and boxes full of prepared meals delivered right to the front door.
Weight loss diets have helped millions of people shed excess weight, enjoy better overall health, and reclaim their physical and sexual vitality all while reducing their odds of developing diabetes or suffering a heart attack.
The weight loss diets profiled above run the gamut from highly structured to loosely structured and from free to fairly pricey. What they all have in common, however, is that they work. Use the information in this guide to determine which weight loss diet is right for you.
