Marloix has said to a few people that he "doesn't do the whole 'love' thing." And he does genuinely mean that. He's not just trying to be edgy nor inviting any challenge to make him fall for someone. Man's an Aromantic Homosexual, he's not built that way, he just wants to be fecked and then left alone. He'll help out and do work and favors for the people around him to keep his mind busy, but he's not in it to make relationships with anyone. He's not quite above making friends though. He may think he is. And truthfully he's a horrible friend who tries not to get attached to anyone too deeply though, for reasons. But it still happens on occassion. Sex is just another way to pass the time for him, and in his canon he wastes a lot of his meagre earnings on prostitutes and brothels. I'm still not sure enough of the ff lore to be able to comfortably bring this sort of thing up outside of his canon though... Surprisingly Marloix is also extremely respectful when it comes to consent and privacy, sexual jokes and teasing aside, so it probably wouldn't come up anyway. On a sidenote, since I started drafting this post up Marloix has been called a Masochist after he started to speak a little more openly on such things. And... hmm... while I suppose the sentiment isn't entirely false, its also not exactly accurate either. With his nerve damage and severe, deep depression in general, he's rather addicted to seeking out any kind of high he can get, not necesarily through pain, he doesn't even like pain, but pain is definitely an option. He didn't correct them though, he'll let anyone weave and believe whatever story in their head they hold about him.

Nelandrie is possibly one of the Straightest characters I have, and likes men in almost every aspect. She stubbornly believes herself to be above falling for anyone though, and remains aloof and uncaring. She has the elven lifespan to justify not rushing into any sort of deeper romance and her work is far more important to her than any kind of relationship, beyond a fast means of stress relief. Sex is a huge stress reliever for her, and she is stressed a lot of the time. A lot of men who push her into a rage may unintentionally find themselves sharing a bed, or more accurately, a broom closet with her. (Though I'm not in any way going to write anything even remotely like this with people I don't know, god no!) Despite being completely straight, Nela is not against showing off a bit of skin for the ladies though, they can stare all they want for all she cares, she'll take it as a compliment. And honestly she would be as polite as her snarky, prickly nature can manage at turning them down if any woman ever came forward about it. She is particularly fond of an ugly little workaholic halfling man though. Not romantically of course! Its just nice to finally meet a man with very similar ideals and takes their job seriously. Definitely nothing romantic about it. Certainly not. No. Never... sips.

Urzula is both Biromantic as well as some flavour of Grey Asexual. She develops crushes on anyone who is nice to her for more than a few minutes and tends to get taken advantage of because of it. She has no idea what to actually do with these feelings and has no desire to act on any on them other than staring and pining from across the other side of the room with sad puppy eyes and not saying a word. Urzula also has almost no concept of long-term commitment to a relationship and is largely oblivious and obtuse to the fact that anyone could actually want that from her, she has unintentionally broken a few hearts this way. Her self doubt is far too strong, and most people only end up with her out of a sense of pity anyway, "I can fix her," etc. It's no surprise they get heartbroken when she doesn't respond in the way they expect. She's far too set in her ways, and most people see that as a bad thing or something that needs to change, rather than simply accepting it. Urzula's a little autistic in this way, combined with a lot of past trauma. She doesn't feel safe with change, and will shy away from anyone who insists she can, or worse, should change. Losing the relationship is just the safer option. No hard feelings intended.

I guess I'll mention Emmond since he's listed here too. He is an Aromantic Asexual who thoroughly believes himself to be a perfectly healthy and normal straight guy. His marriage didn't work out but he has a daughter, Aleks, as a result. He loves his daughter and would do anything to keep her safe.

So as we know Rand and Elayne have a set of twins, one a boy and the other a girl- sometimes I think about if their son is just the spitting image of Rand as a kid. Both in looks and personality. He decides to get lessons from anyone and everyone about different ways to fight to be the best prince of the sword for his sister. So he’d of course go to Lan, Perrin and Mat who are all famous warriors in their own rights and imagining, Mat, Perrin and Nynaeve all facing this young boy who’s just exactly like the Rand they remembered from Emmonds Field. Brave and loyal and kind.

In a niche that may only apply to me, I am thinking about transposing the Mighty Nein (Critical Role) into the Wheel of Time world.

Unsure the big picture stuff- like when is this au set (pre/during/post wot series), is it the same story (has the Dragon been reborn to fight the Dark One, etc). So we're not going to get into those details rn.

Really rough character concepts though:

Yasha: Far Dareis Mai like she's so Aiel it's almost impossible to put her anywhere else EXCEPT that her main weapon is a sword. Which is. A big issue. I suppose she could be from the Borderlands, but the Maidens are such a good fit for nomadic warriors with VERY specific marriage rites, benefiting Yasha's backstory.

Beau: she feels like the obvious pick to be Far Dareis Mai because of her hand to hand melee prowess, athleticism and overall attitude, except we all forget she's a noble lady from wealth so I posit that she's more akin to the Cha Faile, and probably came from somewhere like Tanchico, or, to be more tasty in her dynamic with (Aiel) Yasha, she's from somewhere in Cairhein. I think at some point she's sent to the White Tower for schooling (and discipline), which is where she stumbles into the warder training grounds. Or we wash this whole thing and she's the Aiel, and Yasha's from the Borderlands.

Caleb: definitely an Asha'man, if this story is set in a world where we have Asha'man. If we don't... well. Good luck buddy! OR he's an Ogier. We gotta have a book nerd somewhere.

Jester: absolutely Aes Sedai and I think she ends up in Yellow but she acts WAAAYYY more Green. She's from Ebou Dar solely bc I love their petticoat and marriage knife fashion statements. She's young (for an Aes Sedai) and recently snuck out of the Tower to go see the world. Or, perhaps, she's a runaway Accepted fleeing the Tower for the same reasons: she's bored, she's pissed off too many people there, and there's a whole world to see!

Fjord: he almost certainly grew up in Tear. The knee jerk reaction is to make him Seafolk but I don't think that works for his story. He's an orphan in Tear aka the lowest of the low bc if we know anything about Tear it's that they go "you're poor? Disgusting." and also they hate anyone using the power. Likely Fjord starts channeling so he gets ushered out of the country and ends up in Tar Valon OR he's in Tar Valon to become a Warder. Either he and Beau meet here as Warders in training, or he meets Jester by accident and she lies-by-omission promises to help him if he gets her out of Tar Valon. In any case, FJ end up on the road together. At some point, whether he trained for it or not, Fjord becomes Jester's Warder. I'm torn on whether Fjord becomes a channeler or not, but ultimately I think yes he does. Or maybe he's a wolfbrother... or all of the above...

Veth: she can be our sweet lil Emmonds Field lady who is also a wilder (wild out!) but has never seen the big world and also can only channel under very specific circumstances due to her block.

Caduceus: hear me out on this one. Bc the knee-jerk reaction is to make him the Ogier I think. But actually I think he's a wolfbrother. He can Foretell in dreams, is disconnected from society, and all about the power of nature.

Molly: from somewhere in the borderlands OR maybe from Shara. It kinda depends on where we set Yasha, as the two of them have to meet at some point. OBVIOUSLY a gleeman with the fancy gleeman cloak included.

Essek: the Dynasty is the Seanchan this is a pretty straight 1:1. The issue is, of course, that Essek is effectively a sul'dam if not outright marath'damane and at this time I have no idea what that means for the Seanchan in this version of the world. But he's gonna have some bitchin fits bc the Seanchan are the worst people you've ever met BUT they never miss on the fashion.

Lastly (for now) Camelyn = Rexxentrum is pretty obvious but I have such a heart for Cairhein solely bc I think the Cerberus Assembly would be playing 5D versions of daes dae'mar.

Rand Al'Thor and Mental Illness

I never conceptualized him as mentally ill, and seeing people in here refer to him that way made me take a step back and consider why?

The first reason has to do with his character arc. When we meet him in Emmonds Field, he is a well-adjusted, regular teen boy with a popular girlfriend and a cush career ahead of himself as a sheepherder. So he doesn't start off mentally ill, and for whatever reason, that prevented me from making the connection later.

The second reason has to do with his main issues being presented as the result of *magic*. The voice in his head wasn't schizophrenia, it was his past self leaking through. The taint was obviously to blame for anything shaky personality wise. So again, I didn't make the connection.

But why? Turns out, I didn't see the glaringly obvious because I was inured to mental illness by my crazy ass parents. I literally thought it was normal to be that angry and paranoid.

I have a lot of OCs (haha statement of the year) but many of them share a lot of similarities to a point where I think a psychiatrist could probably go to town on dissecting my brain and tearing me apart. I'm not exactly pleased about it and worry that my characters get dull with a lot of recycled concepts and aren't interesting, though it's not something I do on purpose.

It's usually long after I've already developed the character and gotten a feel for them and their story before I'll start to notice similarities, sometimes to an uncanny level, with some of my older brainworms.

Emmond and Marloix for example are particularly similar to me. Both come from a similar line of work, both had similar [redacted] in their lives to shape them, they're both shitty old crummudgeons (though Marloix is not old and does a better job at putting on a fake smile), they both have catatonic levels of depression, they both have terrible addictions, they both have very bad self destructive tendencies and living habits, they both very much want to be dead, they're both rather cowardly tbh, they even kind of look similar really..... The biggest difference is mostly just their sense of morals and sexual persuasions.

Remi has some similarities with Marloix too I realised. They are both born into [redacted], the most sopping wet miserable and pathetic beasts you will ever meet, o my pills seem to be working now bc I've been staring at this for a while and not actually thinking any thots, or writing anything. I will try to come back to this later but I'll probably forget everything I was thinking for this tho tbh I already have. Goodnight.

I'm on my re-read of Eldest and I have questions about:

1) the governance of Carvahall and, extrapolating from there, about the governance of all the other villages and areas. Ex I just passed the part where the village feed barn was on fire and it's said by the narrator that "mishandling fire [is] a hanging offense," and I would like to know about the last hanging. Especially since there isn't a mayor or sheriff or other authority in the village, not even womens' and mens' circles like in Emmond's Field in WOT. There's men who seem to have authority in the village but no titles. How would it be decided that someone committed a crime, much less how should someone's crime be punished? By vote? Is it a true democracy? Or a patriarchal democracy? Is governing power divided out household by household? Or is it technically anarchy and the village is held together by spit and elbow grease and deep-rutted culture? Is justice ("justice") meted out by mob?

2) How is the empire governed really? Because while there's some clues and we know that it's an empire and gal is the king and he's got a decent sized army for a medievaly fantasy world and does stuff like ordering villages to be wiped off the map and there's nobility and earldoms, it's just not clear how the governing actually functions. It clearly varies city-state to city-state, but as it's an empire... I need some charts.

3) History of the Riders because now as an adult I'm picking up a lot more clues, but it's still unclear because it's in the past, not particularly important to the narrative, and was written by a young guy. But I am very curious about the past of Alagaesia and how the Riders actually functioned as an institution. I want details. I want a history book.

Considering all of this, it's clear that I suffer from ASOIAF brainrot. Me and GRRM are looking at our beloved fantasy series and asking "okay but where's the paperwork?"
