Welcome to the Order of the Phoenix, Gina!
You have been accepted for the role of SEVERUS SNAPE with the faceclaim change of Aneurin Barnard! We really enjoyed Severus’ ambiguous motivations that might come back to bite him in the butt later on! Your personality section was on point and we’re looking forward to having the resent grump come back to the Order. We are so excited to have you as part of this roleplay!
Please take a look at the new member checklist and send in your account within 24 hours! Thank you for joining the fight against Voldemort!
OUT OF CHARACTER:
NAME: Gina
AGE: 25
TIMEZONE: MST-Arizona
ACTIVITY LEVEL: First and foremost, I’m a promotions producer at a local news station, so I’m on call if breaking news happens. Thankfully, for my job, doesn’t happen too often. Also, my boss is currently on maternity leave, but will be back mid-March. In the meantime, I’ve been given a lot of extra tasks that sometimes make me work 60 hour weeks. Luckily, The Academy Awards was one of our biggest nights with deadlines, news, etc., so things have somewhat calmed down. Thank goodness! Weekends are usually when I’m on the most. I’ll try to get on during the week – especially on my early days. All that being said, I’ll definitely will be able to post at least once a week! As long as writing is still fun, and doesn’t feel like a chore, I’ll be on the dash frequently (and I’m very good about keeping admins informed if there’s ever going to be an issue with activity check)!
ANYTHING ELSE: trigger: non-con.
CHARACTER DETAILS:
NAME: Severus Snape
AGE: 21
GENDER, PRONOUNS, and SEXUALITY: Cis-Male, He/Him, Heterosexual.
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood
HOUSE ALUMNI: Slytherin
ANY CHANGES: Request FC change: Aneurin Barnard. I can see Adam Driver work as well. Either way, I am comfortable - just happen to have more resources of Aneurin.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
PERSONALITY:
Generally, Severus is seen rather than heard.
The mind of Severus Snape is complex – to be sure. Filled with calculations, fragile threads of truths and lies he’s told and webbing them all together, and innovations for many different forms of magic. To keep all of these thoughts collected, Severus keeps a journal that he has heavily bound to keep secret. There, he states the deepest parts of his soul, creates new potions, spells, and whatever else he deems worthy. It is protected by a blood spell that only he knows the enchantment to. Like him, everything is kept very private and close to his chest.
While Severus has plenty of thoughts coursing through his brilliant mind, he does not initiate conversation. In fact, he says much more with his eyes. Even if they can be cold. However, this does not mean Severus will keep silent – nor is it out of shyness. When Snape graces others with his opinions or ideas, they should not be taken lightly. Every single word uttered has meaning.
Being around Death Eaters and the Dark Lord, he’s kept a keen eye – finding everyone’s tells and when it is best for him to speak his true sentiments. As well as this, if he feels provoked or given an opportunity to speak freely, he will not cower. Often, his retorts have a bite to them, thick with sarcasm or bitterness; or both.
Severus Snape is profound in potions – and dare we say even more skilled in the Dark Arts. Books were a comfort for him growing up, finding company with leather-bound pages and becoming well-versed in their contents. A strength he chooses not to boast about is his ability to create new spells, new magic, even. Most of these, however, were being saved to get a slight revenge over his old school enemies. And therein lies the rub. Snape’s insecurities are tightly bound to Hogwarts and being bullied – not to mention his inability to reveal his true feelings toward the one girl who showed him kindness all those years.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FAMILY:
A broken family. That was the home of Tobias Snape and Eileen Prince.
A Muggle father and a Pureblood mother. Such parents didn’t give Severus an opinion on blood purity – but rather if an individual could prove themselves. While his parents may have had married for love at some point, something shifted their feelings.
For Snape’s father, nothing seemed to please him. Except for, perhaps, a bottle of gin. This instilled a primal instinct for Severus to do better; be better. Strive for power.
As for Snape’s mother, she grew sickly and thin. Her grief taught him empathy. It also made him value any comfort; starving for any sort of love and affection. This was, most likely, the cause for Severus’ immediate interest in Lily Evans – and the roots of his near-obsession with her.
Both of his parents were unhappy, and let it affect both their home and their son. Living near-destitution, the Snape house was filled with hateful words, arguments, loud shattering of priceless heirlooms or objects, and other things that still haunt Severus to this day. When thinking back on his past, Severus prefers the memories of when they both neglected him altogether, rather than any other aspects of his upbringing.
OCCUPATION:
Potions Apprentice to Professor Slughorn.
Invaluable to the Dark Lord, the talents of Severus Snape brought him closer to his inner circle. For Voldemort, it also meant he could manipulate the young man’s talents to foil any plots that the Order may have against him. Knowing his passion for potions, Voldemort encouraged Snape to take on an apprenticeship with Professor Slughorn – while also peeking behind the curtain at Hogwarts and keeping an eye on the Headmaster.
ROLE WITHIN THE ORDER/THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ORDER:
**I read the following note: “Severus will not be in the plotline until a player is accepted in his role. Him turning on the Death Eaters and coming to the Order as a spy will be considered a “roulette” plot drop whenever he becomes a taken character. Until that happens, players should write as though he is not yet in the Order.” AND he plot drops, *so I’m writing him as if he’s newly joined the Order at first as a DE spy, but now as a means to win Lily’s friendship back. 😊
Walking a thin line between hero and villain had never once crossed Severus’ mind. Yet, here he was. An Order member. At first, in a plot for the Dark Lord, carrying out the order to spy on the organization; find out how it could crumble. The young wizard had already grown steadily in their ranks, garnered enough trust, and was even listening to Voldemort’s other requests like his employment. All for the sake of war. It was a task daunting enough for anyone; however, Severus knew pretending to be an Order member would bring him closer to Lily. That, and potentially erase any suspicions Frank Longbottom might have if he thought he saw the Slytherin’s face during the arrest. At first, it was all an act.
Now, within the Order, Severus is a black sheep. Many of his childhood bullies are within their ranks, and many who distrust him. Although, with Severus’ lust for power, proving himself is nothing new to him. In fact, he thrives on it. No more fighting behind a mask…watching those he cares for nearly meet their end. An easy task to spy, being a great reader of both people and their minds. However, an overwhelmingly difficult task to want to continue fighting for something he didn’t believe in. Not that he believes in the Order either, but his lust for power has now been overcome with a desperate need to win an old friendship back. Perhaps to take Lily Evans far away from any wars as well, forgetting the two sides; no more choosing between what is right, and what is easy. Severus faces this new challenge, while fighting off those he once stood beside. For now, he’ll leave it to fate – if he’s able to win Lily’s friendship back. Maybe even try and win her heart as well.
SURVIVAL:
Severus Snape survives purely relying on his skills – and providing them to whichever side he feels is winning. It was part of the reason why he joined the Death Easters in the first place. Unfortunately for the Order, Snape believes the Dark Lord will win; that they will fall – and not rise from the ashes, as their namesake. A lust for power has blinded him most of all. But with it, he’s earned the trust of Voldemort, become invaluable. A faithful servant. Once the war s over, Severus believes he will be rewarded for his acts. At least, as long as he continues to do his bidding…
While with the Order, Severus has taken up housing in Hogwarts during the school year under his apprenticeship with Slughorn. During the summers, he’s found a small flat down near Hogsmeade to keep close enough. Beforehand, he often stayed with Lucius Malfoy in their incredibly large manor. It made it easy to stay near his comrades and to carry out any dark deeds.
Until there seems to be a clear winner, Severus will carry out his work as a spy. Even if it means slightly changing sides to do it as time goes on. The skills he carries with Occlumency are not to be trifled with. It seems he’s one of the few to have mastered such magic, making him the perfect soldier for espionage.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Severus’ relationship with Lily Evans was broken long ago. However, he will try and make peace with her, at the very least. If they rekindle their friendship, Severus would likely switch sides; happily die for her and prove himself. If it blossomed even more (something he fears even daydreaming about will jinx it), Severus would give up everything with the Dark Lord and his following. Everything with the Order. All to be with her – away from the rotting parts of the Wizarding World.
OOC EXPLORATION:
SHIPS/ANTI-SHIPS:
Ships: Snape/Lily & Snape/Chemistry.
Anti-Ships: None
WHAT PRIVILEGES AND BIASES DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE?
Having gone through a very traumatic animalistic incident in his years at Hogwarts, Severus has a large bias against werewolves. The whole experience left a nasty memory for him, left in complete shock and disagreement with Dumbledore. And having Fenrir Greyback at the Dark Lord’s disposal certainly didn’t make matters any better.
There is one thing that will never chance for Severus Snape, and that is his hatred and bitterness towards certain Gryffindor boys he now has to work with in the Order. The thought alone makes his blood boil and skin crawl. Yet, he will do what he must for his cause…and maybe even throw in a snide remark or two every so often.
Muggleborns are something of a mystery to Snape now. When he first met Lily, he thought she was different from any other one – slumping the rest together with the likes of his father. Although seeing how fierce Dorcas has become – and so well integrated with the Wizarding World – Severus has gained a new understanding. Of course, he’s still untrusting, at first, and even a little cold; but, that doesn’t mean his mind cannot be changed.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
Jess and I were talking because I’ve been itching to write again. She linked me to the RP, and there was a spark to my muse once more! Had to apply because I love the Wizarding World and exploring it. This is an interesting take on the Marauders era, in that it’s concentrating on one organization and its inner workings. I’m excited to explore that!
PLOT DROP IDEAS:
There was a head cannon I had once read where Irma Prince is actually Severus’ mother in disguise. That might be something to play around with! Perhaps to prove his loyalties to the Dark Lord, he must eliminate his parents. Instead of this, Severus uses his connections to hide her as the librarian at Hogwarts and keep her safe.
ANYTHING ELSE? Super excited to be applying! 😊

lmao never trust my words when i say no more muses. so anyway, under the cut are brief intros.
ABIGAIL MACQUEEN looks an awful lot like VICTORIA JUSTICE. SHE is TWENTY-THREE and while they’re DETERMINED, they have a tendency to get pretty PASSIVE. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to SOLITAIRE by MARINA&THE DIAMONDS.
so i can definitely see how she resembles victoria’s character on eye candy. i actually created that muse before and then when the show came out, i modified it to look similar.
Older of two, she’s always been very energetic and outgoing. And very very damn good with computers.
When she was 16, her younger sibling went missing, and she started developing her hacking skills to try and track her online activity to find her.
But she never did, at least no in time, since they found the body of her younger sister washed up on some shore on the East Coast two months later.
She decided to not let it stop her, and decided to use her skills to actually help others who might need it. So she opened some sort of underground business, and gets paid to hack for people(as long as it’s not like... government, or the person isn’t meaning any harm by it).
Buuuuuut she got caught, although they gave her some kind of second chance. She’d be free, as long as she decided to use her hacking skills to help cyber crimes rather than doing illegal jobs. So now she’s a hacker for cyber crimes in Kola(which is where she grew up btw).
ARINA KOLOSOVA looks an awful lot like NATALIE DORMER. SHE is THIRTY-TWO and while they’re SUAVE, they have a tendency to get pretty VINDICTIVE. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to YOU DON’T OWN ME by DUSTY SPRINGFIELD.
Born and raised in Moscow, both her parents worked for an underground agency, think something similar to Kingsman, but with a Black Widow twist.
While her childhood was fine, when she became older, her parents started training her to become the perfect agent.
They became harsher on her, often depriving her of a real meal or even bed sheets at night when she wasn’t doing good in her training.
It was becoming a lot to deal with, but she knew better than to go against her parents. So she just tried harder and harder in trainings until they judged she was old and skilled enough to pass the entrance test for the agency.
Which she did, she aced it. While Arina never really thought about doing the same job her parents did, she did have a job now, at 21, so why give it up?
But it was underground, not very legal, and so they got busted when she was 24. She wasn’t there when they showed at the HQ, but her mother was, and she destroyed all files linking to Arina before the authorities saw them.
Due to her parents being arrested and her job not existing anymore, she managed to get a visa to move to the states for political protection.
She landed in Kola, and joined a biker’s gang, which is the best thing she did in her life.
Due to being deprived of meals often when she was younger, she now has a very large appetite, although she does burn off all excess by training.
Probably gets paid to help people get revenge on whoever did them wrong.
ARWEN DAE SHEEN looks an awful lot like ARDEN CHO. SHE is TWENTY-NINE and while they’re FUN-LOVING, they have a tendency to get pretty CLUMSY. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to WEIRD PEOPLE by LITTLE MIX.
Dae was born in Korea, but before she was even 5, her parents were targetted for a crime they did not comit, but the culprit created false proofs, so they had to flee the country.
They landed in England for a few years, building a new life. And by doing so, they all changed their names. They didn’t want to be traced back, although they did keep their last names. She was only 5 though and would only come up with random names, so her parents named her after a character from their favorite book series.
Her father later on got a job offer in Kola, California, so the family moved there. Arwen was probably about 8-9.
And she’s been in Kola since, and doesn’t plan on moving out, since she fell in love with the town.
She currently works as an elementary school teacher, as well as a fencing instructor by night.
CARSON MCALLISTER looks an awful lot like ALEXANDER KOCH. HE is TWENTY-SEVEN and while they’re IDEALISTIC, they have a tendency to get pretty DERANGED. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to WICKED by BOY EPIC.
My fucked up son I haven’t played in ages.
Son of the police chief in Kola, and a high school teacher, who sadly passed away giving birth to him.
His father was not a good man. Carson grew up seeing him bring in women, at first acting like a true gentleman, until he became abusive with them and they left. And that did rub on him with time.
During high school, he fell in love with this girl, she was the light of his life. They were together for nearly 5 years, before they broke up. He was training to become a police officer like his dad, and she felt their paths were diverging.
He... did not take it, and locked her up in one of the rooms of his very large house. His father working crazy hours and that room being empty, never realized it until a few weeks later. A missing notice person was filled, and his father suspected him. The house was searched, they found the girl, and Carson was arrested.
He did time, and is only coming out of jail now, has no job, probably couch surfing since his father won’t talk to him.
Still wants his ex back tbfh.
GENESIS FERRER looks an awful lot like ZOE SALDANA. SHE is THIRTY-SEVEN and while they’re LOYAL, they have a tendency to get pretty OPINIONATED. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to SORRY NOT SORRY by DEMI LOVATO.
Her parents moved to the states before she was born. But they later on got deported, although since she was born there, she was placed in foster care. (would’ve much rather prefered to be taken with her parents)
Was intentionally bad with all foster families because she was salty. She’s always been kind of a brat.
After graduating, she started studying management, while also working as a part time security guard at the mall.
One thing lead to another, and when she graduated, Genesis decided to start her own security company. So now she owns a company, who people basically employ to guard their buildings, malls, shops, zoo, whatever.
Was never able to get a serious relationship because she’s very distant with people. BUT I SWEAR SHE HAS LOVE TO GIVE.
Also I’m making her a green alien in the future verse because I CAN.
MADELEINE STOKES looks an awful lot like KYLIE BUNBURY. SHE is TWENTY-SEVEN and while they’re CHARISMATIC, they have a tendency to get pretty JUDGEMENTAL. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to BO$$ by FIFTH HARMONY.
This character was originally an April Pearson fc? But she has like no good resources? So here we have the lovely Kylie instead.
Filthy rich family, she was spoiled to death. And it got to her head. But her parents also thought her that she’ll have to work for her own money when she’s older.
Queen Bee all through her school career. People looked up to her, but also feared what she could do.
Currently works as weather girl for the local channel.
That character was also originally inspired by Regina George, so she does keep a Burn Book, which she’s had since high school, and still adds stuff to it.
MARGARET BALDWIN looks an awful lot like DAISY RIDLEY. SHE is TWENTY-FIVE and while they’re METICULOUS, they have a tendency to get pretty INDIVIDUALISTIC. You’ve probably seen them around Kola listening to CAN’T BE TAMED by MILEY CYRUS.
Daughter of Gustav, he used her as one of his test subjects.
When it got debunked, her mother and her changed identities, and while it did mess with her head, it was nothing compared to her mom.
It wasn’t much later that her mom had to be sent to a psychiatric rehab center, and is still there. As for Nicoline Margaret, her neighbour was kind enough to take her in for as long as it might take.
They already had two kids, so she grew up with two people she now considers her siblings.
She always did good in school, but was horrible at following simple rules and orders. So after graduating, she went into journalism and is now an investigative journalist.
She hates her dad, and wished he would still be in jail. Actually erased him from her life and didn’t even know he was out until she went to see her mom and she mentioned he visited her.
She’s very bad at relationships but I swear if you bring me John Boyega, Adam Driver and/or Oscar Isaac, as exes, current crushes, FWB, or whatever you can think of, I will forever love you.

WANTED! FC can be changed!
Name: Jim Porter Age: 51 Sexuality: Heterosexual Gender: Male Portrayed By: Jason Beghe Availability: Open
“How do you think I feel? My daughter is dead because of this lunatic and what are the police doing? It looks like a whole lot of nothing from where I’m sitting!”
→ Background
Jim Porter is one of those guys who’s been around forever. The Porter’s have deep roots in this town and enough money they could probably run the place, even richer than the Shaw’s. It doesn’t make him stuck up, though, he’s best mates with Richard Ford, who owns the local newsagents. Jim likes people who can make the best out of what they have, make a life for themselves.. though being able to throw money at a problem is definitely not a bad thing. It’s how his parents had operated and that’s just what he learned to do. Jim lives in the house he grew up in, a massive place in the rich part of town where he raised his own family. He’s never had to work a day in his life and he has enough money to keep what’s left of his family comfortable for the rest of their lives so he gets a little frustrated with his daughter, Diana, who moved out a young age and started her own life… working in a supermarket, which wasn’t the great future he’d envisioned. Jim does like people who make the best out of what they have… but the Porter’s have a lot, so he doesn’t understand Diana at all. If you have money, why run from it? Still, the two did start to get along better when she left home, so he’d grateful for that and he does his best not to judge her life choices.
Alicia, his youngest daughter, was always the favourite. Not the brightest girl around but she was so much like her mother. Naive, sweet, and funny. She was definitely daddy’s little girl. She always managed to make him laugh and she didn’t seem to have a great desire to leave home, especially after her mother died in a car crash. The loss of his wife sent Jim into a tailspin and he ended up in hospital on suicide watch for a couple of months. It made him feel ashamed that everyone in town would know but he managed to eventually pull himself together and recover enough to go back to his life… he had his daughters and they were his strength.
→ Back to Baberton
Nowadays, Jim is just trying his best to hold it all together. Alicia’s death in a hit and run last year really hit him hard. He knows that Diana is worried about him ending up back in the hospital, or worse, so he does what he can to reassure her that everything will be okay. Though it hasn’t been confirmed exactly that the hit and run driver who killed his daughter is the same serial killer that is tormenting the town, Jim is adamant that they are one and the same. He has no idea about Alicia’s crush on her old English teacher Charlie Baker but, if he did, then he might start thinking the way his nephew and Diana have done and feel like he had something to do with it… considering he actually dated one of his pupils and was a suspect for Annie Pierce’s murder at one point, he could look more than a bit shifty. Diana, however, is doing all she can to shield him from everything to do with Alicia’s death, probably because she is worried he’ll have another breakdown. Jim feels stable enough despite the fact his world has been brought to the ground around him but he isn’t sure the police are ever going to find out who just left his poor baby girl lying in the road like that. He doesn’t have a lot to fill his days with considering he doesn’t have a job and he’s all alone now in that big house.
→ What’s His Secret?
Is responsible for his wife’s death. He’d been drinking and driving at the time of the crash. He pretended a car had come out in front of him and ran him off the road and into the telephone pole. Hardly anybody bothered to check if he’d been drinking and the ones who did had a hefty sum of money thrown their way while the police went in search of the phantom other driver who was supposedly responsible for the crash. The guilt was what led to Jim’s breakdown.

Link
It is well-known in the dirty world of politics that if you throw enough mud, some of it will stick.
Those on the right have always sought to discredit socialist figures, whether to distract us from their own misdemeanours or to further their own political careers. But time has shown Jeremy Corbyn to be on the right side of history.
It is no accident that he won the Ghandi Foundation International Peace Award in 2013. In his acceptance speech, he cited egalitarian economics, grassroots democracy and peace in place of aggression and war. He has always advocated that war and bloodshed must be considered a last resort. He continues to champion diplomatic and political solutions rather than unnecessarily risking the lives of British soldiers and innocent civilians.
If the likes of Tony Blair and George Bush had followed Corbyn’s example, their handling of the Iraq war would have been very different.
Yet, the anti-Corbyn smears persist. Let’s have a closer look at them.
‘Links to the IRA’
As the ‘Real IRA’ pushed for a ‘long war’ and a victory by any means, Margaret Thatcher and SDLP leader John Hume were compelled to hold secret talks with Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. Many Labour MPs, like Mo Mowlam, John McDonnell and Jeremy Corbyn, did likewise.
Of course, the aim was to broker a peace deal. And, without the work of all those involved, the peace process would not have been possible. However, while Thatcher was afforded relative secrecy for her meetings, Labour MPs, such as Jeremy Corbyn, were not.
Since these talks, right-wing politicians and media outlets have taken the opportunity to spin Labour’s negotiations with Sinn Fein as a ‘betrayal’. Sadly, many members of the public have swallowed this version of events without question.
Disreputable tabloid The Sun claimed:
“Jeremy Corbyn tried to fund an IRA bomber’s flight from British cops when he was caught by a clever fraudster. The embattled new Labour leader handed over £45 to Irishman Sean ORegan, who approached him inside Parliament to claim he was part of an IRA active service unit”.
This story was an ‘exclusive’ for The Sun for one reason — it was false. The Times, also jumped on the bandwagon, but were forced to apologise twelve days later, conceding that the money was actually paid by a staffer and Corbyn had notified the police as soon as he found out.
Naturally, much has been made of Corbyn stating that he ‘recognised’ the Irish Struggles. In truth, there had been terrible bloodshed on both sides of the conflict. The hand that Britain played in this must not be whitewashed. Papers from 1972 show that the British government was prepared to end the sectarian conflict by forcibly moving hundreds of thousands of Catholics to the Irish Republic. However, the government abandoned this plan. Why? It was concluded that unless the government was prepared to be “completely ruthless”, there might be an outcry at home and abroad, particularly in the United States.
Corbyn, unlike Thatcher, did not support the Ango-Irish Treaty (the forerunner to the Good Friday Agreement). Thatcher herself later admitted that supporting it had been a mistake, as it entrenched division for many years following its implementation.
On the Middle East
Jeremy Corbyn believed that bombing Syria was the wrong course of action because it was unclear which groups on the ground were working alongside ISIS and which were not. Backing the wrong group could have resulted in the British government actually arming ISIS or providing them with the opportunity to overpower Kurdish and Syrian forces following airstrikes.
At a time when other members of the coalition had halted their attacks, Corbyn wanted to see ISIS starved of its resources — the oil revenues and arms supplies cut off — as well as pursuing political resolutions.
However, parts of the media and the Conservative Party sought, once again, to besmirch Corbyn’s reputation. Absurdly, they accused him of being a ‘terrorist sympathiser’, referring to a speech he made in the House of Commons in which he was “welcoming our friends from Hezbollah to have a discussion and a debate”. They seized upon the use of the word “friends”, despite knowing this to be a well-worn diplomatic term.
Corbyn later went on to explain to channel 4 news:
“I’ve met with many organisations with which I profoundly disagree, but if you want to bring peace, you have to have conversations.”
Even the former head of Mossad (right-wing Israeli intelligence agency) agreed that talks with Hamas and Hezbollah were vital as part of a peace process.
The Conservative Party and ‘terrorists’
During racist Apartheid rule in South Africa, Margaret Thatcher dubbed Nelson Mandela a ‘terrorist’. She stated:
“A considerable number of the ANC leaders are Communists… When the ANC says that they will target British companies, this shows what a typical terrorist organisation it is.”
Her concerns over sanctions and the regime in Africa revolved around her dogmatic promotion of the free market, as opposed to oppression and bloodshed. Her husband’s extensive business interests in the country might help to explain some of her fierce opposition to sanctions on the Apartheid.
Thatcherite MP, Teddy Taylor, even declared that Mandela “should be shot”.
In 1989, as a 23 year old Parliamentary researcher, David Cameron went on an all-expenses paid trip to Apartheid South Africa, while Mandela languished in jail. Alistair Cooke (Cameron’s boss at Central Office) said it was “simply a jolly”, adding:
“It was all terribly relaxed, just a little treat, a perk of the job. The Botha regime was attempting to make itself look less horrible, but I don’t regard it as having been of the faintest political consequence.”
But, in 2006, after becoming Tory leader, David Cameron attempted to whitewash his party’s record on South Africa by visiting Nelson Mandela and saying:
“The mistakes my party made in the past with respect to relations with the African National Congress and sanctions on South Africa make it all the more important to listen now.”
Cameron had been a member of the Federation of Conservative Students (FCS) which ran the infamous “Hang Mandela” campaign. At the time, John Bercow, former Tory MP (now Speaker of the Commons), was chair of the FCS.
Labour MP, Peter Hain was quoted as saying:
“This is the real Conservative Party, shown by the fact that his [Cameron’s] colleagues, who used to wear ‘Hang Nelson Mandela’ badges at university, are now sitting on the benches around him. Their leader at the time, Margaret Thatcher, described Mandela as a ‘terrorist’.”
Upon Mandela’s death, David Cameron and many other Tory MPs changed their tune, heaping praise on Mandela and hailing the anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner as a “hero of our time”. Cameron gushed, “Meeting him was one of the great honours of my life.”
But it wasn’t long before the mask slipped. Former Tory MP, Terry Dicks, compared Mr Mandela to an Al-Qaeda terrorist:
“They were just terrorists… if they had wanted to, they could have executed him. Seriously. And then you wouldn’t have had all this fuss of ‘I can live 27 years in prison’”.
Meanwhile, Conservative Party publication, The Spectator, claimed Mandela’s death had been given too much TV coverage… less than an hour after his death was announced!
Theresa May and Arms Deals
Recent figures have confirmed that Turkey is one of the major buyers of UK-made arms. Britain has sold almost £50m-worth of arms to Turkey, since Erdoğan’s brutal crackdown on opposition groups last year.
Following the failed coup, more than 125,000 Turks were dismissed from their jobs or suspended and approximately 40,000 were arrested. There have even been allegations of opponents of the regime being tortured.
However, the Tories believe that arms exports could be a key growth driver for the UK economy. Boris Johnson even spoke of his desire to draw up a “jumbo” trade deal with Turkey.
Two thirds of UK arms exports go to the Middle-East; a region already flooded with weapons. More than £3bn worth of fighter jets and bombs have been licensed to Saudi Arabia in the past two years – playing a pivotal role in the Saudi-led destruction of Yemen.
With over 10,000 killed and 17 million left without food in Yemen, it would seem that the British government are happy to play their part in deepening this humanitarian disaster so long as it garners a profit.
Theresa May has spoken of her desire to “go even further” in working with Gulf dictatorships.
So, who is the real terrorist sympathiser? The peacemaker, or the unscrupulous arms dealer willing to help prop up dictators?
Through unregulated tabloid propaganda and careful appointments at the BBC, it seems the masses have had the wool pulled well and truly over their eyes. However, those with the stomach to confront the smear tactics are beginning to expose the Conservative Party for what they are.

WANTED! FC can be changed!
♠ Jim Porter is 51 years old and is often confused with Jason Beghe. He is Open.
