Blue eyes spot the mistletoe right away, despite not being much of a holiday person most of the time, Vergil knew what a mistletoe meant, it was common knowledge, one didn't need to be a holiday hyper to understand that anyone caught in front of a mistletoe had to kiss. Watching her from behind, Vergil stealthily creeps up behind her, even hiding his breath like an assassin would when sneaking up to a target -- and his target, was already locked in his view.

Quicker than the blink of an eye, Eden is scooped up from behind, with his demonically enhanced strength, it was like picking up a stuffed animal, carrying her in his arms, he turns her around to face him, keeping her in his grip, he brings to down right to his waist so she could wrap her legs around him.

With the trailblazer still in his strong arms, he summoned a glowing phantom blade that morphs into a hook, and it takes the mistletoe from Eden's hand so she can grab onto him while he phantom hook held the mistletoe above their heads. Blue eyes staring into her golden-yellow hues, he says nothing, instead of choosing to lean in, locking lips with her for a passionate and slightly heated kiss under the mistletoe. Vergil holds the kiss as long as he could, savoring every single second of it, twisting his head a bit into the mix, breaking briefly for a breath, only to kiss her a second time, his lip lightly biting her top lip. extending the kiss again for a prolonged period of seconds before he finally breaks it for air. Even after the kiss was finished, he still kept Eden in his arms, not wanting to let go, not just yet.

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO WATCHING MILGRAM (as of the end of the 2nd trial)

INTRO

What's Milgram? Milgram is a multimedia project whose central concept revolves around the audience judging the character's crimes. All of them stand accused of murder after being brought to the mysterious prison of Milgram, but were their actions truly wrong? Only the audience, through the medium of the amnesiac guard Es, can decide that. Vote them GUILTY or INNOCENT according to your ethics or your whims over the course of three trials , and watch how their lives change in response.

You can read a list of trigger warnings here. Who's working on it? The musical and visual components are led by the vocaloid producer Deco*27 and his employees at OTOIRO, with him working on the lyrics and composing half the songs, while the other half is handled by Rockwell. Teddyloid often works in the songs' arrangement as well. Yamanaka Takuya is in charge of all writing in the MILGRAM project, except for the novels and their manga adaptation which were done by Nami Tsumi. His works tend to revolve around trauma and people's inner darkness, and are often music-related multimedia franchises such as the Caligula Effect series, Utagoe wa Mille-Feuille and Boisterous Six. (Fun fact: the last one was prompted by the thought that if he made a collab with the Takuya Yamanaka who's part of The Oral Cigarettes, maybe people would stop confusing them. It did not work.)

How do I vote? You'll need an account for either Twitter or LINE (Japanese texting app). Then go to the JUDGE page in the official website and click on the icon of a character that's not grayed out. (If they all are, then you need to wait until the new trial starts). You'll be asked to give the site permission to use your Twitter/LINE account. The website should remember your credentials afterwards. You can vote once a day every day for as long as the poll is open. The general rhythm of the project is that a song releases, then another releases next month and the next one takes two months to come out. Since each poll lasts for three months, this means that there should always be two characters available for voting, unless there are delays or you're at the very end or start of a trial.

How does this guide work? / Usage notes Due to Tumblr's restriction on the amount of links per post, this guide will have three parts. They're organized content according to platform/format, but I also paid mind to original release date and overall importance to the plot.

I recommend watching all the first trial content before starting with the second trial. So, begin with the 1st set of voicelines, then the videos and timelines, then double back onto the second set. Everything from the Illustrations and Previews section onwards isn't part of the main game and can be ignored if desired.

I've added some supplementary notes and explanations when I thought it was relevant. Sometimes the information is part of a larger theory post, but please don't take the link as endorsement of any particular theory.

There will be links to the MILGRAM wiki, which is not spoiler-free. If you navigate to the character's main pages, you will immediately see images that spoil developments in the latest trial. This also applies to the official website's character pages. There will also be Youtube links. Since the suggestions can also contain spoilers, you can copypaste the link into Polsy to avoid them. You'll still get videos thumbnails when you pause or when the video ends, but from what I can see they're limited to the videos found on the uploader's channel.

A different set of translations can be found in the Milgram wiki. It is also the easiest way to access the audio, as old lines get retired from the official website and Wayback Machine is inconsistent in saving them. The quotes can be found in their own subpage, such as https://milgram.fandom.com/wiki/Momose_Amane/Quotes . Substitute character names accordingly, and keep in mind that Muu and Fuuta's names are spelled with two u's.

According to the writer's tweets, the prompts for the first trial's voicelines are: 1) Introduce yourself. 2) You're a murderer, aren't you? 3) Is there something you'd like to tell the guard (me)? 4) and 5) What do you think about Milgram?

Loading Screen During the first trial, the loading icon for the website displayed the message "Sing your sins." When the second trial started, the icon was changed. Now it looks the same as the first one for a second, then morphs into "Doubt your punishment." You can see a gif of it here.

Youtube Channel

Teasers These are brief videos which feature the characters speaking sentences out of context. So far we've seen some, but not all of them pop up in the series itself. Some seem to take place in the past, so it's likely not all of them will show up. Note that these videos contain flashing lights, chaotic visuals and screaming. Voice Trailers These trailers have normal and glitchy lines. The normal parts are taken from the website voice lines, while the glitchy lines aren't featured anywhere else. Translations for the static-filled lines can be found in the comment section, and Rochisama also translated the second-trial lines in their website. - First season voice trailer - Second season voice trailer

PV Technically our first real intro to the series, but given the unstranslated onscreen text and the dodgy subtitles, it can be skipped. There's some concept art not shown elsewhere; A cleaned up version can be viewed here and here. The website features a lower shot of the same art shown in the last link.

Song trailers These feature short snippets of upcoming content: songs and one sentence per prisoner. You can skip this if you've already watched the songs and voice dramas in question; the only difference is that sometimes the translation is slightly different. - First trial - Second trial

Main Songs, Jackalope Videos and Voice Dramas In-universe, the voice dramas take place before the songs. However, up until midway through the second trial the songs were uploaded first and the albums (containing the dramas) would be released 1-2 weeks later, so it seems the intended viewing order is the other way around. The tracklist order also supports this, so I'll be using the song->voice drama order. ES and Undercover are special cases. Undercover doesn't seem to exist in-universe, with the timeline for this one being A Milgram Anybody Can Understand->ES->Website voicelines. For the sake of consistency, I still used the song->VD ordering, with A Milgram being placed afterwards due to being released later.

Lastly, some of the official English titles are different from the Japanese ones. I wrote down both the official translation, marked (EN), and a translation from Japanese marked (JP)

First trial Official song playlist

Undercover (Instrumental) Notes: Milgram's theme song and its first release. The official subtitles were changed during the second trial to reference the song titles, at the cost of being less accurate to the original Japanese: you can see the original lyrics here. The lamp that shows up at 2:11 says 御霊燈, "spirit lantern." This kind of lantern is placed at the house of the deceased for 49 days after death. It serves to both announce that the family is in mourning and a guide for the spirit of the deceased; fire being a way for ghosts to find their way from and to the afterlife is a common motif in Japanese folklore. We're on Day 3 of KTAW now, and there are two amazing themes lined up for you!!

As everyone who has ever read the series knows, Kiara is a polyglot. With a real passion for languages. So much so that she has managed to learn not one, not two - but ten of them!!! So tomorrow, we will be focusing on Languages!

Kiara's home, Castelserraillan, is also well known for its vineyards. Her mother Joelle was the main force behind this particular passion, and the entire family has an extensive knowledge on the subject. In fact, Kiara had even told Drake once that she "prefers wine to cocktails". So it is only fitting that we have a theme revolving around the subject of Wine!

Any content is welcome!! Just make sure your work centers Kiara, and presents a positive depiction of her. Fic, art, meta, headcanons, edits, icons, interactive media, even simple character appreciation posts!! We also accept WIPs, so if your piece isn't entirely complete by the end of the week, fret not - you can still send us the WIPs!

The themes are simply inspirations. If you bring a piece for one of the days later, it's entirely okay...just make sure you tag the posts with the day you meant it for! We will always be keeping a bonus week in case you couldn't complete the piece during the week itself, so our official deadline for pieces will be June 1st!

Commission Rambles

KuroEne have some official art refs (official art, merch arts) that can be inconsistent in colours (ex. their headphones) so I also gave some notes and quick edits of official arts.

I sent these arts of Kuroha and Ene as my main refs 🖤💙

I sent more too, but I felt that since I'm commissioning chibis of them, that these arts simplify their designs nicely.

I did a little edit of their concept arts for fun. I mainly did it to get a clearer full body ref of Saeru to make it easier for the artists I'm commissioning

My main focus is on 9/6 and XX/6, basically all related ships (KuroEne, HaruTaka, KonoEne)

Depending on the arts (including merch arts), Kuroha's clothes either get coloured with the same black colour, or with the inner clothes as a darker black.

I prefer when his inner clothes and boots, etc., are a darker black cuz it has more visual contrast against his design. It also differentiates the clothes more to have the outer shirt be a lighter gray black vs. the darker blacks in his hair and inner clothes.

His entire design is in dark colours (black, gray), and the gold in his eyes and facial markings cuts away from that. Yellow is a bright vivid colour.

Though it makes sense in MVs like Outer Science and some official arts/merch why his outer and inner shirts are the same colour to not distract from the mood/atmosphere, and also in pieces/merch that use a limited colour palette

For the FIRST time, I finally get to see that Kuroha art in full and not in crusty quality for once. It's a happy day for me

She is TINY compared to them... Haruka/Konoha/Kuroha is 182 cm (6'0") and Ene is 157 cm (5'2") or 640 px tall... Portable gf. They could put her in their pocket

Interesting that Ene's thigh highs were originally asymmetrical in the concept arts. The finalized design definitely fits her more.

Simplifying Ene's headphones is completely fine with me cuz of the rectangular part on it...

Commissions

Whenever I commission artists, I send a detailed description of the characters' relevant design details, poses and expressions, etc., in the form itself.

Then I attach all necessary art refs in a Google Drive Folder and then send the link to the artist.

Because I know that sending a lot of art refs and a detailed description, just makes things easier for the artists you're commissioning.

VGen's site layout and format are honestly better than Ko-fi's imo

VGen has a REALLY nice UI for commissioning artists... I prefer it over Ko-fi when it comes to commissioning artists.

It shows all your commission requests in an organized format, and it has a really good commission request form, where the artist can send invoices.

VGen lets you upload more files and links as art refs. It's better than Ko-fi's in that it allows you to upload more files and add links. Iirc, I think Ko-fi's has a limit of 5

The artists can DM with their clients on VGen directly, and also leave files in high quality directly on the commission form after completion

There's also a review section, typically the artist leaves a review for the client and the client can give one. I always leave a message for the artist after the commission is done to show my gratitude 🥰

Hello everyone!

First of all, thank you to all 48 participants of the interest poll, it was very interesting to see how another ship week would be perceived! Considering that at least 12 voters confirmed to be happy to dive into participating, I think there isn’t a more suitable date than June 1st, the beginning of Pridemonth, to officially announce this year’s Taikouvember event! (Title picture + new icon provided by @seventeenlovesthree)

November is the last month of autumn, right before Christmas time begins. It’s a time that can be filled with light and coziness but also lurking shadows and gloominess. So, November 6th to November 12th shall be dedicated to the platonic or romantic relationship between Taichi Yagami and Koushiro Izumi (Taikou, Koutai or mainly known as Taishiro(u) in the English speaking fandom). Since "Digimon Adventure 02 - The Beginning" will air on October 27th 2023 as well, some of the prompts are inspired by the potential theme of the movie:

Reviewing Every UKISS Release: By Unpopular Demand ~ Tick Tack + Forever (For KISS Me) + Forbidden Love

So releases from this point onward until around ~2014/15ish are constant and hectic, so I've had to deviate from my original plan a bit. I think grouping the JP singles + KR digital singles in 3s helps keep things a little less...unwieldy, and less constrained by image limits on posts.

Tick Tack - 1st JP Single | 2011.12.14

This was the PV that got accidentally leaked, right? Like they posted the full version of this instead of the short version, and that's why it was so easy to watch it on YouTube or whatever, and it was super easy to get the full audio because of it lol. I think it only took me a day or two to find a 320kbps download of it. Anyway, another pivotal moment of my tween years.

Love the entire vocal line stuffed into the first verse

I like that the parallel with the first and third verses where the former is all the vocalists and the latter is all the rappers

SooHoon + Dongho bridge? An odd combo but very much goated

Honestly super impressed at how much this song is a team effort

Obviously Soohyun, Kevin, and Hoon have the most lines since they do the chorus, but Dongho gets a good amount with his little extra rap, and while AJ, Eli, and Kiseop get a couple lines each

And yeah sure it's a couple of lines, but they are attention-grabbing

Always appreciate a good bookend with the clock returning

Love the dramatic music, love the dramatic lyrics, it's such a good follow-up to NEVERLAND, and an insane first JP release

So lyrically, is this a reluctant breakup song? Like is this a toxic relationship that they're ending even though they're still in love?

This was filmed during NEVERLAND promos I think, so their hair is fine

Kevin, Soohyun, and AJ have great hairstyles; Hoon, Eli, and Dongho are fine; Kiseop's pompadour is meh, but I really like his hair when they're in the grey suits

The fluffy hair looks really good on him, much better than the sleek look he wore for NEVERLAND

The dance battle is cute, really helps give everyone a bit more spotlight

What's falling down from the ceiling? Ashes? Dust? Snow? Asbestos? We may never know

I'm trying to figure out who dominates this song, and while my initial instinct is to say it's a Kevin song, Eli is also a very constant presence? Soohyun and Hoon also have parts that are more memorable. All I can say is that this is definitely not a Kiseop (RIP) song

Love the first and last choruses are SooVin while the others are HoonVin

Soohyun's little "follow me!" is so cute omg

I remember this coming out!!! Got home from school and did the good ol' YT video-mp3 converter to get it on my laptop. I remember distinctly loving it, then also never playing it lol. It's got a special place in my heart now though, like special as in it makes me a bit teary lol.

Something Eli and AJ always having to do a spoken word opening in their songs from this time is so funny to me

"Parting was so hard 'cause you are my only passion" I always thought that it was "partying was so hard" which was super funny, but I see now that I was wrong

"Come visit here it's our lovely party mansion" that always gets a chortle from me like I love them, I actually wouldn't mind drinking with them, but I do not wanna party with them they're all insane

I think it's cute they all get whole verses to themselves, really gives them all enough time to shine during encores lol

So after the Dongho and Eli raps come my favourite part of the whole song - the sex kitten vocal trio building up to Soohyun

Kiseop > Hoon > Kevin > Soohyun is sooooo good and I love building from Kiseop's soft voice to Soohyun the Powerhouse

Also once again, validates my belief that what Kevin is to Soohyun vocally, is what Kiseop is to Hoon, and is why the four of them can be matched off with each other in any way and still sound good

Honestly, the song is mostly the vocal line, sans AJ. The rap line is just there to act as hype men

Music is cute, super upbeat and poppy, and the lyrics are equally mushy

7.75/10 not something I'd listen to on my own volition, but it's always fun watching lives of this, and I love how much the vocal line is allowed to shine (read: I love how many lines Kiseop gets)

I remember obsessively watching the short MV on YouTube because now when I listen to the song, I can still pick out exactly where it ended lol. I also remember really wanting the shirts they wore for the single cover because it was so ~*~cool~*~ and lowkey edgy, which is perfect for a wangsty tween.

Plenty of gratuitous English, a very important staple for them from this point on

Love how Hoon drags out the "...datta kedo~" part right into Soohyun's line, and the slowdown in Soohyun's line to transition to Kiseop, and AJ's rap picks up the pace again into the chorus, super fun to listen to

Even though I know the start of the chorus is "I, my, me, mine", I always forget the "mine" because it's off-beat

And okay, the first chorus always kills me because of Soohyun

The "subete kakete Egaku ai no sign", is so funny to me because I just think about him doing the ahegao face while singing it during the MC break in their anniversary tour

Like his eyes were completely rolled back and the camera, bless their heart, did a great close up

And he did it like 3 times I love him so much

HoonVin second chorus, once again, has me begging for more duets with them, they sound insanely sweet

Once again, I was so obsessed with watching the short MV

Yes I did watch the full version but I mostly watched the official short one because I couldn't afford to materially support them

There's a lot happening in this first scene

First, Kiseop, take your damn shoes off that's dirty, but I'm happy you're like kind of the protagonist for the non-dance non-solo shot parts of this

Second, why is there a life preserver on the bed? Is it supposed to symbolize that this forbidden love is a life saver?

Why are the chairs tipped over? Why is there an Arizona 51 sign? Are the sirens like directly outside the window or what? What exactly is that next to the bed?

Aww the little Kevin solo dance

I like the little circular bit they do while snapping to change formation

Soohyun bodying the hell out of this part

*Kevin voice* "Why are you so passionate during this part of the dance? Is there something you need to tell us?"

Or at least something like that god Teattari Shidai was so funny, and Kevin and Soohyun were constantly catfighting at that time

Soohyun, Hoon, and Eli all look fine, like those are pretty standard looks for them

Dongho still has his bowlcut, and while I don't hate Kevin's hair, I wish it had more texture to it?

The ironed hair with the sideswept bangs just aren't that great on him, especially not with the single-toned hair

Also like this set, very cool

These costumes are okay, the white-red is a nice combo, but the clothes themselves are less snazzy and more understated the other set

Most baffling choice is why Dongho has a belted coat on rather than a blazer

Also not a huge fan of the longer jackets Soohyun, Kiseop, and Kevin have on

It's not the worst, and I think I could like them in a different MV, but it's a bit too...floppy with this dance

Hairs are a downgrade from the first set of costumes, except for AJ whose hair is glorious at this time

Vocal troika are kinda tied for lines, even though I think I remember Kevin's more because he does a title drop in the first chorus

Kiseop gets what amounts to nearly a whole verse, plus he's sharing with Soohyun so that's cool

Ooh just noticed it's a sex kitten trio leading in from the second half of the first verse to the pre-chorus and chorus

It feels like a weirdly paced song

I don't know if it's all the synth sounds and the heavy beat, or if it's the lengthier raps to a slower beat but it feels both oddly long and short at once, even though it's basically the same length as Forbidden Love

Maybe it's the shorter verses compared to the raps and choruses?

Or how the bridge comes out of the second rap chunk without really changing tempo as it goes to the last verse?

Lyrically, it's pining over an ex, very normal UKISS stuff

7.5/10 I do like it and it is in a lot of my playlists, but something about this song just makes me uneasy lol

I wish I had a fun fact for this little time, but unfortunately everything funny I know from 2012 is from after this. Anyway, crazy that this all happened within a year of 0330 and Hoon and AJ joining. Like they honestly fit in so seamlessly it's like they've always been there.

So yeah, we're fully entering what I guess we can call their 'peak' era in terms of popularity (lol, lmao even) and activities, and also approaching when I started being chronically online and had actively blogged about them on this good ol' hellsite. Yes, I did find all of my reblogs and tags from that time and dear lord, 2012-2014 for tweenies-turning-teens is very psyche-damaging in our current year.

Update at the bottom

22yo Yohanes Kidane has went missing.

What we know so far is that yohanes took an uber from San Jose to San Francisco to "meet a friend". His uber ride was successful and everything was fine with that, he had apparently arrived at his destination. His sister said she checked his location at around 8 pm and found he was at the San Francisco Bridge which she thought nothing of. The next day/morning she noticed his location showed that he was still at the same exact location. Later on in the day, his location was seen moving to which his family tried to contact him from that point. A stranger had picked up the phone and said they found his belongings and were just returning them to the welcome center. He was officially reported missing at 2:45pm, August 15th. As of today he has still not been found and they say there is no evidence of suspicious activity.

What I want to do is see what the charts can tell us about his possible location and what happened that night. We have 3 different times and charts to look at so it should be good, we have a lot of information to dissect. Let's hope we can find yohanes 💜

So by looking at this last seen chart alone, let's see what we can find out.

The ascendant (victim) is opposite the 7H moon:

This is interesting. I don't think this was just a friend, I believe he could of been on a date possibly with the 7th house here.

5th house gemini:

If he was with a friend, then their intention would of been to have fun and explore the golden gate bridge since it is an iconic historical place. The 5th house, which is pleasure, joy, recreation, entertainment is in gemini. So our curiosity, intellectual pursuits, knowledge/truth, experiences. It could of also been somewhat of a childlike curiosity to a dangerous extent bc he was definitely young and not from California. He had just very recently moved there from New York, so this could of been his 1st time visit. I'm not sure how busy it is at the Golden gate bridge welcome center at 8pm, on the website it says they're closed at 6pm. So not sure if he was there after hours or what, I just know during active hours they can be pretty busy/chaotic. There's a bunch of cars/traffic, variety of people/vistors/tourists/families etc, lots of things to do, so it's easy to be overwhelmed by everything going on there.

Jupiter square the asc:

He could have done something in excess possibly, maybe he is located far from where he's expected to be. Maybe something foreign and unexpected/untypical happened to him.

Mars sesquiquadrate the asc:

Idk why but I get the feeling he could of been under the influence, maybe smoking/drinking. Mars in hard aspect to the ascendant would be brash decisions, being to heavy on their feet, clumsy, impulsive, abrasive, excessively confident.

Even tho I don't think this is something he would do based on what we know about him and his past. If that's not the case maybe whatever happened to him was quick, harsh, forceful/painful, basically anything but soft or gentle.

Pluto conjunct ascendant:

It would of been very visible to others that he was a influential individual, maybe he was intimidating, powerful looking, deep, he could of also been eerily quiet at some points. Like his presence was felt strongly to those surrounding him.

He could of also seemed very naive tho at the same time since I just noticed that pluto is in the 12th house. Maybe this power and influence was hidden/dimmed in some way.

7H Moon opposite 12H pluto:

Maybe he was feeling very unstable at this time, like one second he was feeling safe, good, comfortable, in a familiar environment but then all of sudden he would be paranoid, hyper aware, afraid, suspicious etc. He could of felt like he was having some kind of psychosis, derealization.

I have my natal pluto in the 12h also conjunct my ascendant so I understand that feeling very much.

Something interesting is that with pluto on the ascendant and with moon opp pluto it seems like this could have a lot to do with assets, power, extracting resources from something/someone but all of his belongings were found. A backpack with his personal paperwork, 2 laptops, wallet. So if all of his belongings were found, it would be only him who went missing..

Let's not get too ahead ourselves bc this was at the point when he was seen leaving in the uber. Let's check out the 8pm chart.

Wow...looks like a lot has changed since he left in the uber at 7:15pm.

Moon in the 6th house:

So the moon was in the 7th house at 7:15, meaning that he was definitely with someone at this time where it was mutual/give-take type of relationship. Could explain basically the whole uber situation "ride sharing" to now at 8pm at the Golden gate bridge. It's possible that he needed help at this time, the 6th house to me is our health, so I wonder if he was hurt already at this moment. Either he needed help or someone was asking him for help. He could of been at aid of someone else or looking for some himself.

The moon can actually tell us a lot about the current situation, in a crazy deep way. To me this one is very important.

So leo moon in the 6th house could explain that maybe he was trying to have fun and medicate himself? Maybe he wanted to be seen in a good light, could stem from anxiety, perfectionism, wanting validation. Medicating was his way of getting his nerves under control and to get him to feel how he wanted to feel in that moment. He was seeking some attention/affection/admiration, maybe even just needed someone to acknowledge everything he's done. It's like sometimes all you need is to hear is that you're doing well, or some words of encouragement. Some people don't get enough reassurance, so it makes them feel somewhat insecure and unstable. He could of also wanted some kind of feedback, advice, someone who can solve a problem he had.

Sun opposite asc:

Maybe he could of been somewhat egotistical, swinging between wanting to be self-assured, bold, presentable, to needing others to ground him, validate him, soothe him. Maybe at some points he wanted to be alone but then he suddenly wanted company and to socialize. This may be a very important point in the chart bc the sun is exactly opposing the asc both at 22° so that confirms that this is a significant aspect. He could have been having trouble being perceived, he felt at odds/disconnected with his appearance vs. center core self. He could of felt somewhat chaotic or unorganized.

I'm curious who this friend was that he went to go see and if they can confirm that they were possibly doing dr*gs bc that's what this chart seems like to me. 1. "Cowboy", cowpoke, cowhand, cow- herd, cowpuncher, waddy, drover, buckaroo, etc are all hired hands who tend to cattle, usually from horseback.

Cowboys poked cattle, during a drive, to get them going in the right direct- ion.

At the end of a drive, Cowpokes used a long stick to prod cattle up into rail- cars.

The word comes from "to poke along" or "moving slowly."

Cattle handlers arose as an American version of Mexican vaqueros, whose name has the same meaning as cowboy.

2. The "Old West" is now better known as the Wild West.

In all levels of cowboy life, pulp myths have given cowherds a knightly code of honor that triumphs over the dusty & dangerous reality of working with cattle.

These myths have now been mostly passed on to sci-fi, superhero & action heroes.

Black Female WWII Unit Gets (Congressional) GOLD! WWII's 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs

"Tech. Sgt. Tommye Berry, Acting 1st Sgt. of the Negro WAC group" 4/16/1945. NARA ID 535929.

The Women’s Army Corps (WAC) was signed into law by President Roosevelt and set to active duty status on July 1, 1943, but this group did not include Black women. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Civil Rights icon Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune (see: related Tumblr post) advocated for the inclusion of Black women who were eager to contribute to the war effort.

Finally, approval was gained, volunteers enlisted, and the battalion trained at Fort Oglethorpe, GA. In February 1945, the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (the self-proclaimed “Six Triple Eight”) deployed - becoming the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve in Europe in WWII. They were led by Major Charity Adams, the highest-ranking Black woman in the US Army during WWII.

The 6888th organized and sorted mail for delivery to U.S. soldiers in Europe. They worked around the clock, fighting not only the mail backlog but also racism, sexism—and the Third Reich.

On March 14, 2022, President Biden signed a bill into law to award the women of the 6888th Battalion a Congressional Gold Medal "in recognition of their pioneering military service, devotion to duty, and contributions to increase the morale of personnel stationed in the European theater of operations during World War II." Award ceremony date TBA.

The 6888th by the numbers:

The 6888th faced overflowing warehouses stacked with letters and packages for anxiously awaiting GIs. The women of the 6888th knew the importance of such connections to the soldiers and embraced as their motto: “no mail, low morale.” Facing huge volumes of “undeliverable” mail, they developed a tracking system using 7 million servicemember ID cards to correctly route the letters and package.

“The women of ‘Six Triple Eight’ confronted warehouses stacked to the ceiling with letters and packages. These buildings were unheated and dimly lit, the windows blacked out to prevent light showing during nighttime air raids. Rats sought out packages of spoiled cakes and cookies,” the Army said.

It’s been 3 years since CHASE. Meanwhile, Jack tweets another short IRIS clip, this one showing scenes from CHASE & “Discovery Logs”, “Persons of Interest” / “SUBJECTS”.

Jack posts this video; & through out the run-time are random glitches & quick clips from the IRIS Project. The next day on his Discord, Jack promises more spooks & he’s been “enormously busy”.

Another video upload on the channel, & more IRIS glitches. Jack also later says in a reply on the JSETWT page that there is no date set as things aren’t quite ready yet, but “soon” will be.

Yet another full game let’s play, & even more glitches- including a new one showing a bowtie (& a certain dapper gentleman has worn before);

Each day from IRIS we get number with a short clip, essentially a countdown & in a spectrogram from one of the IRIS clips, “NOT SAFE” is found.

Jack posts how Project IRIS is dropping the next day on Halloween, & even uploads a video. We also get new Night-Watch IRIS posters from Magpie.

October 31st - Happy Halloween!

Jack posts a couple comments about today. Then a tweet that things were about to start. It gets posted aaaand- it’s a livestream? Showing a computer for a password??

Yep. It’s up to chat to figure out what it is & post the answer one letter at a time. Just like Overnightwatch (& /zoom), this turns out to be “I AM HERE”.

Where we are transported to another room, with a time bar at the bottom slowly running out.

It turns out this entire event- this ARG- has rooms where the live chat can actually control the camera movements to find a hidden puzzle, complete the game/ puzzle before time runs out, & a video clip is released.

It takes some time with nearly 40k watching & participating, but Jack (& IRIS) kept us updated! The stream even crashed at one point.

There are several easter eggs in a couple different places, (including a turtle, that was actually Magpie’s idea. Awe. We named him Gerald.)

Later, Jack posts the entire video; ANOMALY FOUND - CHASE BRODY. It shows Chase at IRIS for (supposedly) a week.

October 18th, 2019, day one; Chase is being questioned by IRIS (for simplicity, we’ll call Dr. Arin) about how he spontaneously appeared after the events of CHASE. He is consistently asked about being in contact with a Subject/ ALTR 114209, & told he cannot leave.

October 19th, day two; Chase is given the Dr. Hopkins Assessment that is filled with all sorts of questions, & is pushed to the limit.

Day three; no one comes to talk with Chase, but at least is given a tennis ball for distraction. However he hears sounds/ voices he recognizes & shouts out some familiar words.

October 21st, day four; Dr. Arin informs that both exposure levels & levels in the room “have also been increased”. They repeat the same Assessment as before, but this time there are light flashes & Chase becomes more & more distraught. He stumbles over his answers & can’t understand what’s happening to him.

Day five; Chase is alone again, but hears a different voice that he calls ‘Echo’. Chase insists that they can both leave if they work together, & discovers Echo has seen Anti too. After claiming Chase is “special” they abruptly leave.

Day six; Dr. Arin tries a different, more kind & sympathetic approach to get Chase to open up. He tells a case about how IRIS helps people, that he knows what Chase has been through (with an evil giggle heard), how he has seen ALTR 114209, & who he was; “a husband. A father”. Chase tearfully claims “I didn’t kill them”.

Day seven; Chase is told he needs to be moved to a more secure location, but panics when he recognizes a red hallway. “I’ve been here before” & says they have to leave. When IRIS doesn’t listen, he attempts to flee but gets dragged back- pleading all the way.

The finale; a dead guard shows right away that everything went wrong, then we actually go through Chase’s cell camera to the same hallway. Bodies now litter the space, fresh blood on the ground. A figure levitates down & makes his way to Chase on the other end, leaving bloody footprints in his wake. 

Anti greets him, in a voice not like one we’ve heard before caused by the scar across his throat, with “hello Chase”. 

The video then ends.

Afterwards, IRIS tweets “service maintenance required”.

The next day, we get a partially REDACTED document from IRIS, & Sean does a livestream going over the Project- & the future.

November 3rd - 4th

Jack tweets in a reply how Chase canonically has only 1 kid now. The next day, we find out it’s IRIS’s 100th Anniversary;

Which happens to be the mirrored date of Chase’s first video.

Later, in another Theory Stream going over the Project; Magpie hints IRIS redacted info from us as Echo was communicating with Chase, & Anti’s line was originally a different voice than the final version.

Your sulking only grew until a rather new clothing item caught your eye from the upper shelves of your closet you treated as your 'shrine of merch' of all your favourite artists you had collected throughout the years. It was a stray kids merch, one you were sure your boyfriend didn't know about, and finding it the perfect match to your pants too, you decided that this comfy beautiful outfit would not just get you to meet some fellow stays out in public, but also some reaction from your beloved.

How would you rank the 18 Class Trials from THH, DR2, and V3 from worst to best?

This is... virtually impossible for me, lol. Comparing the trials from each game to each other?

How about I just rank them within each game? That'll make it a little easier for me to deal with...

DR1

6) 5th. It's driven by lies and ultimately rushed to its end before the characters can draw any solid (pointless/meaningless) conclusions. So of course it's last for this game, and it’s probably last for the entire series as well. If there are any saving graces to this trial, it’s the surprise when your closest ally is willing to let our protagonist die... and that this trial contains the fake/bad ending route.

5) 3rd. Although the main culprit is pretty obvious from the jump, it requires some surprising twists to explain how everything got to be the way it turned out. But did I always find those twists plausible? Errrrm... not really. 

4) 2nd. Pretty good trial that's hurt for me by the fact that there'd barely be any need for a trial at all if a certain third party didn't dick around with the evidence for no reason. Also, the dual nature of Toko is an incredibly predictable reveal. Without those two aspects dragging it down, though, this could easily go higher.

3) 1st. Sure, the major hint given and, subsequently, the eventual culprit are pretty obvious, but this one establishes so much about how the trials work and how much the details you observe will matter that it’s still pretty fun that first time around. The initial surprise of the first victim makes for a great way to keep you invested in the trial experience. This trial is damn near iconic now, so it feels almost mandatory to respect it.

2) 6th. DR1 still has the best "final trial,” easily. SO MANY great reveals, and they all totally work for me. Nothing rings false or disappointing, and it also features Makoto finally coming into his own and taking the lead. I nearly labeled this my top pick for DR1, but...

1) 4th. It's easily the most emotionally dramatic/satisfying for me, and there’s something weirdly inspirational for me about Hina’s incredibly harsh stance during it. This one GOT ME IN THE FEELS, and in part that was because I saw so little of it coming. After the more predictable elements of the first and third trials, this felt like the writing was firing on all cylinders. 

DR2

6) 2nd. You have to accept a couple leaps of logic to make this trial keep flowing, and the fact that trial is ultimately reliant on someone noticing a candy that’s very small and hard to see while the person is also in a stressful situation and they are groggy from being drugged/asleep and it necessitates the person retaining this seemingly useless detail inside their brain .... that’s always bugged me.  The “escape route” conversation even retroactively raises questions about the first trial. Oof. On the upside, the reveals it brought us about Fuyuhiko and Peko were incredibly important, satisfying, and legit surprising turns. And it’s pretty cool how it’s basically a two-for-one combo trial because you have to solve the Twilight Syndrome case before you solve the current case. 

5) 3rd. Other people have pointed out the leaps of logic and missing pieces of this trial, but at the same time, the candlelight hanging is so intense and the ultimate reveal of the culprit is such a brutal turn that I have to give it some props. The culprit’s primary plan is ultimately one of the most ingenious in the series, IMO, and definitely one of the most twisted/fucked-up, which earns it some points. 

4) 4th. This is probably the single murder case in the franchise that I understood the absolute least about when entering the trial, for better or worse. On the one hand, that made it really fun to see the mystery gradually unfurl, but on the other hand, it made it tough for me to provide the right answers at certain points in the trial, leaving me fumbling. A big part of those issues was how it was initially hard for me to wrap my head around the nature of the funhouse via the provided 2D graphics... but once I eventually got there, I had to respect the creativity that went into devising such a “weapon.” Also, it can be hard to tolerate Komaeda in this trial. He’s even more of a know-it-all-but-reveal-none-of-it jackass than ever before, and his turn towards overt cruelty towards the others (and Hajime in particular) left me raging. The culprit reveal is good, but the motive does beg the question of why he didn’t just come forward from the jump.

3) 6th. There are a lot of great reveals in the final trial that totally reframe how you see the characters, and some of them are deliciously twisted. There’s also a ton of great dialogue provided, and in retrospect, it’s actually sort of neat to have one endgame mastermind reveal in this franchise that doesn’t involve the “They were hiding among us this whole time” trope. All that plus the surprise return of our surviving heroes from the first game! However, this is also where they officially reveal a core element of DR2 and its setting that I've never liked. This knocks the trial down a few pegs for me. Of course, by the time you reach the trial, I'm sure 99% of players have already figured that particular "twist" out. There’s adequate evidence to predict it in the first freaking chapter, and I know this because I DID predict it in the first chapter of my initial playthrough... which further hurts the supposed “reveal” of the island’s true nature when it comes around. 

2) 1st. Probably my favorite of the “first trials,” there are lot of components that go into this one. There’s a combination of two premeditated killers plus one spur-of-the-moment accidental victim, there’s a satisfying (though admittedly maybe too easy) reveal of the killer being one of the most unpleasant people to be around during the first chapter, and I really dig how audio became a very important component of the mystery due to the total blackout. This is also the part of the game where we learn just how twisted Komaeda really is, which is HUGE both in terms of its immediate shock factor for a total newcomer and in terms of its impact on the game as a whole. Of course, since it’s a “first trial,” it can’t be too complicated... but they still manage to confuse so many of us with “MEAT ON THE BONE” :P

1) 5th. Again, I will almost always give the most emotionally intense one the top slot. The “traitor reveal” is obviously THAT MOMENT in DR2. I also love how this one used the strange internal logic established early in the game RE: Komaeda’s luck to develop the eventual solution. And forcing us to make use of evidence gathered in multiple locations outside of the immediate site of the body/murder? That more complexity of that type that I see relevant to a trial, the more I appreciate it, and this one has loads of that stuff. Although I guess the investigation isn’t technically part of the trial itself... but it’s still very relevant to it. 

DRV3

6) 4th. I found this whole trial to be just... extremely predictable. Maybe it’s because I was so far into the series that I’d gotten used to its tricks by this point, but this was the most predictable trial for me since the first one in the first game. The whole looping/rollover map setup of the VR? Obvious. The murder weapon? Obvious. Our culprit’s ongoing confusion at everything discussed? Obvious. There were only a couple of points I didn’t have already figured out when I walked into the trial room, and those turned out to be basically irrelevant (such as the bottle of poison). The eventual motive is at least a surprise, but I also found it hard to accept that this culprit would really kill people over it. Overall: Super lame. 

5) 3rd. Another double murder trial, and once again one murder overshadows the other. The séance murder is definitely clever. Sure, you know the culprit pretty early on, but the methodology is the good part. However, the real fascinating one for me is the art lab “locked room” murder. Going into the trial, I couldn’t fathom how they were going to explain that one, and I found the answer both smart and satisfying. It’s funny to imagine how many times the culprit had to try that stunt with the lock before it actually worked, heh. This is probably the best of the three “double murder” mysteries in the series, but the trial isn’t as emotionally affecting as the 3rd trial in DR2 to me. Moreover, the trial loses points for the most infuriating Hangman’s Gambit of the series and especially for the motive reveal. When the killer’s motive can be boiled down to “they’re basically just a psycho serial killer,” it’s not very interesting.

4) 6th. The first part of the trial, which deals with re-assessing the first case? It’s pretty damn on-point. That leads to the mastermind reveal, which... isn’t great, really. It’s not a terribly interesting character to make the mastermind, they have no interesting motives or characterization to unevil, and they’re ultimately just a pawn behind another, off-screen group of masterminds. But then things get uproariously funny to me. The metatextual stuff is just so goddamn ridiculous. It’s frustrating and annoying how much of our not-mastermind’s explanation is clearly full of lies and half-truths that we’ll never have complete answers on, but that’s also part of what makes it all fascinating. We get to swap protagonists like four times! There’s a fake-out Game Over! These are really cool things. But it all leads down the road of our protagonist arguing that fiction does affect reality (yes, good), that fictional people can still matter (definitely) and that... fictional lives are equal in value to real ones? Uhhhhh slow down there, champ. That only works for YOUR universe, where fictional people can be made out of living, breathing individuals. But in light of the metatextual stuff you’re surrounded by, you kinda sound silly AF right now?

3)  2nd. Look, this is still incredibly irritating to me. Also, if you go down the alternate “lying” route at one point, you are forced to accept that these piranhas were somehow trained to only eat dead things, which is just... so deeply dumb.  But what is good is the entire ropeway conceit (which is a very significant part of the trial!) and the idea of the partition inside the tank. This was a murder with an elaborate, intelligent plan that is very well-executed. And the motive reveal? It’s one of the best in the series! I respect that stuff. (If I had the right to toss the execution in as part of the soup, I’d say that it’s also one of the series’ best. Let’s call it the icing on the cake.)

2) 1st. The writing that made this trial work is undeniably clever. The way the narration told us exactly what was happening without really telling us what was happening? It was a masterstroke of both great writing and perfect localization coming together. When it becomes clear during the trial what is about to happen, it’s a huge shock. The transition to another protagonist with the lights flickering out and back on is beautiful. Even the core concept of a protagonist who was willing to step up and try to kill the mastermind immediately is just deeply interesting. And obviously this one made my emotions run high. HOWEVER! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Kaede Akamatsu was a more interesting, unique, and compelling protagonist than Shuichi Saihara ever was. Ultimately, the protagonist-swap, no matter how well-written, was a mistake because they shifted us from a unique character with an interesting new perspective to a character who is, in many ways, “Makoto Naegi with even less self-esteem.” Yes, I know he has aspects that make him distinct as his own person, but there’s still just too much there that feels like we’ve done it before, and he never fully escapes from that. It feels like a massive waste and a huge missed opportunity to ditch Kaede like this. Now, if they had just done the protagonist swap in reverse — making us start out with Shuichi before flipping things over to Kaede — we could’ve had ourselves something amazing here.

1) 5th. I know I decided that I couldn’t rank all among each other, but if I did do that, I feel confident that the 5th trial in DRV3 would rank very high indeed. You go into the trial unable to even determine who the victim was due to the fact that two people are missing and there was nothing left of the body that spoke to an identity. Going into it, you naturally figure that one of the two missing parties has to be the victim and the other one is probably the culprit. But even with just two friggin’ suspects, the amount of turnabouts in the case that made me rethink all my assumptions was insane. Sure, the explanation for how the person inside the Exisal can maintain “character” is pretty damn thin, but once you get past that, I don’t think there’s a single false note in the trial. It even breaks unprecedented ground by continuing into another Non-Stop Debate after everyone has already voted. And of course, it culminates with a lot of intense emotion. Even the execution is emotionally satisfying! ..... although I’m not sure if I should count the execution as part of the trial, but hey, still. As far as Dangan trials go, the fifth one in DRV3 is basically a masterpiece.

Crown of Red Lotuses Event

A new ~1 week-long event that coincides with the release of Taishakuten. It's like a mix of SP Kiyohime's event, specifically the Mad Desire part of it, and the Mermaid King boss of Senhime's event. Consists of 2 main parts; Demon Domain Crusade and the Final Chapter of Good and Evil.

Demon Domain Crusade

Experience Taishakuten's and Asura's crusades against the Demon Domain. There are a total of 7 chapters, each has 3 waves of increasingly stronger bosses. Lotus Pastries are required to access a chapter, get 1 every day by accessing the event and 3 every day for a total of 700 jade from the exchange shop. An additional pastry can also be obtained by purchasing the event s-jade pack. This part of the event can also be done on auto.

Upon selecting a chapter, you'll start playing as Taishakuten on a tiled map. He has 2 skills that can be used while on the map, using either skill ends your turn. First skill revives Asura and requires defeating 6 bosses to gain 1 usage of it. Second skill places a lotus on a tile next to Taishakuten, has a 1 turn cooldown. If Taishakuten is KO'd, you'll need Sweet Dew to revive him, get 2 every day by accessing the event or buy 1 for 10 jade in the exchange shop. On auto Taishakuten will go towards the nearest enemy and enter a Boss Battle with them or, if he isn't close enough to enter battle, he'll place down a lotus. When Asura is KO'd then reviving him will take priority.

On the map, you'll also have Asura as an ally. He is controlled by AI and will actively go towards the nearest enemies to attack them. If you enter a Boss Battle with an enemy he has attacked, the enemies in the battle with reduced HP. When Asura is KO'd, enemies will try to surround him,

Boss Battles cost 6 AP, can be done solo or co-op and have a 3-minute time limit. Before fighting an enemy you can view their bio, their skills, how strong they can hit and how fast they move across the map.

When an enemy is defeated, regardless of how, you'll get a batch of rewards. Rewards for the small red-headed enemies are; a couple of 4-5* souls, an EXP soul and/or some orochi scales and ~9000 event currency. Rewards for the big belly and kappa enemies are; a couple of 5-6* souls, an EXP soul and/or some orochi scales and ~20000 event currency. Rewards for the red-headed enemies with staffs are; 1 6* soul, a couple of 5-6* souls, some gold orochi scales, an EXP soul and/or some orochi scales and ~55000 event currency.

After defeating 3 rounds of enemies you be rewarded with a batch of items; 2 black daruma shards, 25 mochi, 50000 gold, 20 gold orochi scales, soul boost, 100% EXP boost, a bottle of Soma Wine and 150000 event currency.

Unlock skills with Soma Wine for Demon Domain Crusade. Soma Wine is obtained by clearing a chapter of Demon Domain Crusade, 1 bottle of the wine is required to unlock a skill. There are 3 tabs of skills that give buffs for Direct Battles, Taishakuten's Lotuses and Asura. The final buff for Direct Battles can be levelled up multiple times.

As F2P and/or as someone who doesn't have 5000 spare jade for the event, the max number of Soma Wine bottles you can get is 7.

Holy Lotus Pool

Improve the effects for the event frame and unlock hourly event currency by completing 3 sets of tasks. The tasks all relate to Demon Domain Crusade. The top set of tasks relate to the Boss Battles, the bottom-right relate to Taishakuten's Lotuses and the bottom-left relate to Asura. Tasks are;

Boss Battles: - Deal a total of 50mil damage in battle - Defeat 40 bosses in battle - Deal 3mil damage in a single battle

Lotuses: - Deal a total of 20mil damage with Lotuses - Defeat 5 bosses with Lotuses - Deal damage to 3 or more enemies at the same time a Lotus

Asura: - Deal a total of 30mil damage with Asura - Defeat 25 bosses with Asura - Deal damage to 3 or more enemies at the same time by reviving Asura

After completing all the tasks, the rewards you can get per hour is; 11400 event currency, 5800 gold, 8 orochi scales and 6 AP. The icon frame itself cannot be obtained until you participate in the Final Chapter.

Final Chapter of Good and Evil

On the 7th day of the event, there'll be a tab where you can select who you want to side with in the Final Chapter. Your choice is between Asura or Taishakuten, can change your choice at any time before the Final Chapter starts.

Depending on who you picked, you'll have Asura or Taishakuten as your boss. Costs 6 AP to challenge them, solo only and can be done on auto. Regardless of who you picked the battle format is the same. Both have 3 phases that last ~80 seconds. Phases are represented by a tricoloured bar under the boss's HP percentage bar.

1st Phase: - VS Asura: He'll start with 5 minions, his attacks will reduce your max HP and 4 symbols on a lotus flower will slowly glow. - VS Taishakuten: He'll debuff your shiki with the highest attack, on their turn they'll be controlled by him.

2nd Phase: - VS Asura: His 5 minions will disappear and your entire team except Taishakuten will be "KO'd". The 4 hands around him will become new enemies. - VS Taishakuten: He'll summon 4 minions.

3rd Phase: - VS Asura: Taishakuten will gain 4 buffs and your shiki will be "revived". The 4 hands won't be enemies any more and 5 new minions will be summoned. - VS Taishakuten: Asura will gain a bar, under his HP percentage bar, that fills up when you deal damage. When filled he'll launch a special attack.

When the HP bar for either Asura or Taishakuten reaches 0%, the battle and the event in general will be officially over.

While the battle is ongoing there'll be some total accumulated damage rewards and a 6* soul exchange box. The soul box is just the one in Senhime's event, need 60 of an item that drops from the battle and you'll have a choice out 3 random souls. Total accumulated damage needed to get all the rewards is 800mil, rewards are; 200000 gold, 100 gold orochi scales, 400 AP, 100 jade and a 4* white daruma.

There is also a leader board, but the rewards displayed on it are the ones for total damage. They are not additional rewards.

After the battle is over, the animated frame for the Final Chapter will become unlocked. You'll also get the event frame that you unlocked effects for in the Holy Lotus Pool but with an additional particle effect in the bottom left or right.

Tab 4: 1 loading screen illust, new Sasori Onna skin skin, random SSR/SP, 1 6* EXP Pamphlet, 30 demon souls, a 5* white daruma, 300 jade, 2 blue summon tickets, Gold & AP event pack, Shiki Shard event pack, 6* Soul event pack.

Each pack can be bought a max of 200 times.

Cost to buy all 3 of the Lotus Pastries is 700 jade. Total cost to buy them every day is 4900 jade. There is also an s-jade pack that gives you 1 additional pastry, an extra round of mochi, 10 mochi and 30 AP every day for during the event. So if you want to buy that pack, do so within on the first day of the event.

Standard event farming team should be more than good enough to deal with all 3 enemy types.

Final Chapter

If you chose to side with Asura, the best team to use is a Kinnara team. And if you chose to side with Taishakuten, the best teams to use are a Kinnara or an AOE multi-hit attacker team. The latter is basically the same as the Kinnara team but with Ryoumen.

Who you use for your 5th shiki is up to personal preference and whether a certain skill adjustment leaves test server. Possible choices are a 2nd Kinnara, Taishakuten, Tesso, Sasori or snow spirit Kiyohime, Suzuka or Ushi.

If SP Ao's skill adjustment comes to the rest of CN and TW/JP/GL when this part of the event is live, then forget those possible choices for your 5th shiki and use her instead with kyoukotsu + gashadokuro. If using SP Ao in the Kinnara team, you can also try swapping Sasori out for Kiyo and see which one gives you better damage.

Thursday 27th of May 2021 – Sweden’s most revered architect Sigurd Lewerentz, regarded as one of the most important and enigmatic figures of modern European architecture, is the subject of a major new monograph, published in May 2021 by Park Books in collaboration with ArkDes, Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design in Stockholm.

This vast new book offers the most comprehensive survey to date of Lewerentz’s achievements, newly researched from original objects and archival material uncovered across Sweden, featuring over 700 pages of photographs, drawings, and sketches with essays by leading experts exploring Lewerentz’s life, work and legacy.

Edited by Kieran Long, Director of ArkDes, and Johan Örn, curator of collections at ArkDes, and co-edited by Mikael Andersson, architectural historian and critic, this landmark book will be a significant moment of reassessment. An accompanying exhibition opening at ArkDes on 1st October 2021, curated by Kieran Long and designed by Caruso St John, will be the first major monographic exhibition of Lewerentz’s work in over 30 years.

Lewerentz, who was born in Bjärtrå, Ångermanland, in northern Sweden in 1885 and died in Lund 1975, is a mythologised figure in the history of 20th century architecture. Arguably Sweden’s most distinguished modernist, his influence is admired today by a generation of the world’s leading architects.

Architecture devotees from around the world travel to visit his projects, from his late masterpieces St Mark’s Church in Bjorkhagen and St Peter’s Church in Klippan, to Stockholm’s iconic woodland cemetery Skogskyrkogården, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Designed by award-winning graphic designer Malmsten Hellberg, this new book features new photography of all of Lewerentz’s major works by the architect and architectural photographer Johan Dehlin, as well as never-before-seen drawings and plans for buildings, furniture and interiors from Lewerentz’s collection at ArkDes.

Sigurd Lewerentz

Sigurd Lewerentz was born in the north of Sweden, in Bjärtrå, Västernorrland County, on 29 July 1885, the son of Gustaf Adolf and Hedvig Matilda Lewerentz. He initially trained as a mechanical engineer and an architect at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and followed his education with apprenticeships in Berlin and Munich.

When Lewerentz set up an independent practice in Stockholm in 1911, he was joined by his colleague Torsten Stubelius. His first breakthrough came in 1915 when he was awarded first prize in the competition for a new cemetery in Stockholm (The Woodland Cemetery), a proposal created in collaboration with Gunnar Asplund. For the Woodland Cemetery, Lewerentz designed the neoclassical Resurrection Chapel, completed in 1925. A year following his success in the competition of 1915, he won first prize in the competition for a new cemetery in Malmö.

During the 1930s, while Lewerentz was working on the two cemeteries, he made major contributions to the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 by way of buildings, furniture, and graphic design. Around this time he also realised two major office buildings in Stockholm. He started to design and produce steel windows and other architectural fittings, a side of his practice that gradually absorbed more and more of his time. In the 1940s, he set up his own factory for these purposes in Eskilstuna.

In the mid 1940s Lewerentz oversaw the completion of the Chapels of St. Knut and St. Gertrud, and the Malmö City Theatre – two projects that he had worked on for many years. His notoriety came with the late churches, however: St. Marks in Björkhagen (1960), and St. Peters in Klippan (1966). When Lewerentz died in Lund in 1975, he was regarded as a legend of Swedish architecture.

ArkDes ArkDes, located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, is Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design. It is a museum, a study centre and an arena for debate and discussion about the future of architecture, design and citizenship. It is housed in a beautiful building by Rafael Moneo and more recently ArkDes´ new studio gallery, called Boxen, designed by Dehlin Brattgård Architects.

Skogskyrkogården (official name in English: The Woodland Cemetery) is a cemetery located in the Enskededalen district south of central Stockholm, Sweden. Its design reflects the development of architecture from Nordic Classicism to mature functionalism. Skogskyrkogården came about following an international architecture competition in 1915 for the design of a new cemetery in Enskede in the southern part of Stockholm, Sweden. The entry called “Tallum” by this couple of young Swedish architects was selected.

This celebrated Swedish architect was born in 1885 and died in 1975

Sigurd was born in Bjarta, Sweden. Lewerentz and Asplund are generally recognised as two of the greatest Swedish architects of the 20th Century in Sweden, and came to worldwide attention. Most histories of World Architecture reference them and their collaboration – the Woodland Cemetery. Lewerentz was a Swedish Modernist. He died in Lund, Sweden in 1975.

His most celebrated work is surely Skogskyrkogården in Stockholm. The architects’ use of the natural landscape created an extraordinary environment of tranquil beauty that had a profound influence on cemetery design throughout the world.

The giant dark granite cross at the focus of the vista from the main entrance may have been based on a painting by Caspar David Friedrich, titled “Cross on the Baltic Sea” (1815), however the architects insisted that it was open to non-Christian interpretations.
