i've also been thinking about how given for the most part utilizes sex in an understated way. i won't pretend that it entirely avoids mainstream yaoi tropes, but i do think every sex scene being fade to black and non-explicit is an artistic choice.

to akihiko, sex is transactional. on the nights he and ugetsu sleep together, he doesn't have to worry about them fighting or having to find another place to stay. when he shows up at haruki's place as well, sex is what he tries to offer in exchange for shelter which is pretty depressing.

for how guarded ugetsu is, i find it fascinating too that he brings his partners to his home. yes, he's using it to try to drive off akihiko and get under his skin, but i think there's more to it than that.

though he claims they mean nothing, ugetsu is always searching for understanding. i think sex is one of the few times ugetsu feels intimate and close to other people. it's also why i believe he still can't fully break things off with akihiko because he craves that feeling of togetherness.
