ALRIGHT WASSUP I love your art style and am an art student so I know a little bit bout what makes art recognizable, (not an expert and definitely not good at remembering terms so don't act like this is some art bible) lemme tell you what I think makes your art recognizable and "lux".
First, you got your shape language. That would be what the other person was referring to as proportions. (Since we're talking about Sora, proportions is absolutely not a wrong word to use, but I'm going to talk about shapes specifically.) The cheek? Always the exact same little curve, same spot, the forehead is the same, which creates a head shape that is incredibly recognizable as you. The hair is also always the same, which may seem weird considering your drawing hair that's pre established but you have a very unique way of doing it. The shape of his lower hair on the back of his head especially stands out to me. His body is always the same type of lanky, you draw his arms and hands a very particular type of way. Overall, very recognizable and consistent.
The colors you use. Honestly, I don't even know how to describe this, and I literally took a class on colors. The only word I can think of is "surreal". They're usually very vibrant, but destaturated at the same time? Like you're taking vibrant colors and putting desaturated ones on top? Genuinely hard to describe. It is one of the most beautiful color jobs I've ever seen tho, and I'm not exaggerating. If you could explain I'd honestly love to try (read: steal) whatever technique you use. Also very consistent, even in the black and white photos. I think it's partially lighting but I digress.
The other person brought up your eyes, and that's probably one of THE most consistent parts of your art I notice. I'm not rly gonna go into detail, cause you said you worked on eyes a lot so I'm gonna just leave you to that honestly cause the eyes you draw are iconic imo. Beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking. No notes just keep it up 🫡
Your lines (and the texture of the drawing) are specifically sketchy, like a very specific type of sketchy. I'm guessing it's the texture of the brushes you use, and it also makes it consistent and recognizable. This is probably one of the things that makes the black and white photos more recognizable as well, since they don't technically have colors to with with and, imo, that's one of the most recognizable parts of your art. The very specific shapes you use are about on par with the colors, with everything else gradually moving down the list.
So yeah. My mini essay on your art. I hope this helps you understand cause honestly? Your art is iconic. Gorgeous. Magnificent. I dream of drawing like you. Pls keep it up cause on god it brightens my day every time I see you post, art or no
I appreciate you taking the time to write out such a long and thoughtful post~! ❤️ This was a very interesting and fun read! I am in many ways completely blind to my own work. Unlike looking at someone else's work, it's very hard to distance myself far enough from my own to see it's prominent features.
For color I can I say I am aware of color theory and mostly follow a sensible routine of cool shadows and warm light points, things that are further away seem more blue etc. etc... But at some point while drawing/painting I do usually fall into adding and prodding the colors into a more impressionistic vibe and away from realism, mostly favoring cool toned colors and adding tones to places that they realistically shouldn't be, but they aesthetically please me, so.
Thank you for all the compliments, I've re-read this quite a few times now, but don't really know what to say besides a boring thank you~! This has left me a lot to ponder, and I'm very glad for your writing..!
Hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, take care~!❤️

So… that Superman and the Authority preview. Thoughts?
Grant Morrison: Superman's genuinely made the world a little better, right?
Grant Morrison, writing Superman and The Authority: lol as fuckin' if you chump
Grant Morrison, continuing to write Superman and The Authority: ...okay but what if he COULD still tho
Tumblr media
* First note past the OOF of that caption: Ben Day dots! The typically most cliché signifier of 'hey this is like old comics' transformed by being made so near-invisibly small by Jordie Bellaire that they're texturing the page.
* Clearly a product of the original 5G plans, I'd assumed the new explanation for Superman meeting with Kennedy would be the post-Death Metal "everyone remembers everything, it all counts!" idea, but between Superman maybe operating in secret in 1963 depending on how you read that first line and the moon landing seemingly happening earlier this looks to be a full on alt-history. Between that and Superman on October's cover of Action rocking his conventional look alongside the Authority this does seem to be an alternate version of Superman after all rather than the mainline even if it'll tie directly in; I'm fine with that since it'll help this stand on its own as a perennial. Oh god though, is this the Linearverse? Was that Generations book one last mediocre Morrison tie-in setup?
* The both earnest and tragic connotations are clear but I'm simply happy for Superman's good nickname to see some use.
Tumblr media
* Anonymous asked: So, I'm NOT an American, but seeing the preview for SatA, I kinda roll my eyes at JFK there. I understand in America there is this mythology about him being so radical and going bring better tomorrow until he was denied to you, which doesn't really match the reality, where he was a cold warrior with reportedly little interest in domestic policy who's sucessor was actually very similar and consistent with his politics (more civil rights, more troops Vietnam). What do you think?
Fair, but besides Morrison's comments in the interview and the ways the Cold War shaped their childhood (as a non-American) as evidence that we're not meant to take this at face value as 'Aw, everything would've been perfect if not for that one thing going wrong', that comment on the JSA is charged. The President waxing rhapsodic about "mak(ing) a difference where the law couldn't" feels just as pointed as "Those poor, poor rich people" in their and Burnham's Detective #26.
* "I want you to stand tall, to end war itself and take us to the stars." "I'll see what I can do, sir." MORRISON PLEASE IGNORE YOUR BEST INSTINCTS AND NEVER STOP WRITING CAPE COMICS
* That this so effortlessly and profoundly captures everything Jupiter's Legacy tried and failed to in three pages - the great patriotic caped champion seemingly on the edge of a new Camelot when we know better, the story from there going into how they deal with the fallout of their failures - would be so embarrassing if it wasn't hilarious to see Morrison outclass the old kid sidekick yet again. Speaking of some Millar-ness, kudos to Janin for pulling off a celebrity likeness that doesn't look like a horrifying other-dimensional freak next to the other characters, that's not something that can always be said for his peers.
Tumblr media
* While Janin draws his regular Superman face here, the red-and-yellow S shield on the cape, the pronounced barrel chest, and even the hair a bit (and then seeing him on TV in black and white) make me wonder if Superman's supposed to be visually evoking George Reeves just a bit here. An American golden boy with a tumultuous private life who died on the cusp of the 60s of a gunshot wound to the head, with a quick and tidy official explanation but conspiracy theories haunting his memory forever after, the Kennedy comparisons are obvious; I wonder if I'm not reading too much into it and this is all deliberate, or if this is an inadvertent synchronicity of the sort Morrison would conceive of in magical terms.
* Janin killing it with the assassination page, real Department of Truth vibes and managing to make it sudden and horrific without the gloriously obscene detail Quitely got into with the similar scene in Pax Americana.
* The astronauts doing hurdles on the moon is actually a reference to Superman's Mission for President Kennedy! as he gets kids interested in JFK's physical fitness program in the most roundabout fashions available to him, 'roundabout' being his foremost guiding principle at the time:
Tumblr media
* The New Frontier and DKR parallels/evocations are obvious, but to me the big point of comparison is Pax Americana with the Hero-King President marshalling the capes in name of a better tomorrow for his nation only to find death and social impotence, the dream exposed as naïve PR in the end.
* Not exactly new information, but seeing this laid out does reinforce to me how much this book covers the sweep of the development of the superheroic idea through the lens of Superman, from the vigilantes (both the JSA and Superman returning to short sleeves) to the triumphant American science royalty to the post-traumatic superfolks trying to make good on all those lost promises and, at the beginning of this, a generation that has essentially failed (not only Superman, but clearly in his half of the preview Manchester Black isn't exactly the force he once was, and apparently Midnighter and Apollo at the beginning of this are semi-retired and think they've wasted their lives after the original Authority failed to make a difference) and what comes now after that failure. That Morrison can tackle this directly with Superman is probably corporately allowed with Jon being there as a more 'ideal' iconic model, and for Morrison personally because they can do their own purified take on the archetype with Klaus, so they can get into the muck of things here in a way they couldn't when trying to do a platonic vision or a new-and-improved model.

Any advice on describing hair?
My advice is that describing hair can be used as more than just character description. Similar to my post on describing eyes beyond color, the state of someone’s hair can say a lot about personality or emotional wellbeing.
Nicely Styled hair: This person put a LOT of effort into their hair
Hair that’s styled all the time, ALL the time: They put a lot of effort in, probably because part of their job requires them to look a certain way. Especially women and people who present as women. That’s an hour every day, plus makeup and a good outfit. Lots of money went into that.
Greasy hair: person hasn’t washed their hair, maybe it’s because they naturally have bad grooming habits, or maybe it’s because their depression has made them slip up in their normally pristine grooming habits. If you have a well groomed character and then suddenly their hair is greasy, you know they’re probably sick or going through some shit.
Curls: It seems to be a thing where writers assume natually curly hair will always look good. It won’t. It can be a frizzy mess, especially in humid/wet/bad weather or if it’s been messed with too much by brushing or something.
If your characters are black, definitely take some time to describe the way their hair looks. A lot of readers assume white as the default unless a writer makes it very clear a character is of color. Like, you toss wavy blonde hair and everyone knows what you mean. You said curly black hair, all your white audience is assuming she’s a white girl with curly black hair who is either pale (for contrast) or tanned (because you said brown skin, and their western programmed brain thought tan) So get very detailed with the hair if your character is of color, especially if they’re black. Show your readers in bold print where the representation is.
Writing Hair Description in First vs. Third Person?
In third tense you can have at it and not worry. Describe hair as much as you want. In First person it can seem a little forced after a while, especially if you’re describing every character’s hair and your character is not someone who would care about hair much, unless it was on their love interest.
When should you mention hair?
Is this person a main or secondary character with multiple scene appearances? Do it. Background character? Eh.
Romantic interest? Do it.
How tho?
I like mentioning hair the most in situations like this: It’s outside in the daytime and the sun catches someone’s hair just right. Hair looks really pretty in the sunlight, especially stray hairs that turn white or gold depending on how dark their hair is. In my book Anna does this twice for two different characters, a girl she has a small crush on and a boy who she later develops a crush on.
I like mentioning it if a character is being affectionate with someone, and they mention hair. Anna runs her fingers through Felix’s hair to be affectionate when he’s feeling sick and realizes how greasy his hair is. It’s a good time to mention texture.
Mixing it with description of body language is good. Someone hides their face behind their hair because they’re shy. Or plays with their hair. Or their curls are frizzed out because they’re stressed and have been running their fingers through it. Grooming stray hairs in place when they’re trying to impress someone. Pulling hair back when they’re getting to work on something serious (Violet Baudelaire is not alone, lots of us pull our hair back to focus)
Describing my MC’s hair in first person?
Ah, the great problem. Or my great problem. I struggle with that one. I think the comments on ones hair come most often when trying to groom said hair. On his first day back to school Ulric is nervous even though his uniform is perfectly in place, though not his hair. And he says his hair has never been neat once in his life. Big detail.
I have an MC in another project who described her hair as she tried to pull it back, saying that thick, curly hair was never meant for generic ponytails (that is true, very true)
Maybe your character says “oh wait, my hair looks good today, like my waves are supposed to be there instead of just happening” or maybe a background character compliments their hair (it happens to people all the time, it’s called realism, and I think it would be cool if your character’s response was a “thank you/I know, right?” and they were confident about their appearance. Too many characters think they’re ugly and don’t believe the compliments, to the point of it being an actual trope)
Do any of you guys have MCs who dye their hair? I don’t, and I should since I dyed my hair a bunch as a teenager. In their case, I’d say having your MC think about if their hair needs to be dyed again or if they want to try something new, which is genuine “I dye my hair all the time” thought process. When I dyed my hair I thought about the color all the time. You’re also more likely to get complimented for hair that’s dyed, especially if the color is interesting.
That’s all I can think of for now, and this has gotten very long. Feel free to send me more asks :) I love them

things abt me an asd diagnosis would explain that adhd doesnt exactly (sorry folks on mobile just skip this/blacklist “long post”):
my love of making lists (hi)
finding patterns in lotsa things (not so much numbers like the stereotype but like making hundreds of hyperspecific spotify playlists bc i noticed 2 or 3 songs that had the same specific theme or just categorizing shows/movies by their many similar plot points)
my genuine love of solitude/needing my alone time like a Lot
at the same time wanting more/closer friends
like literally my whole life wanting to have a ride or die best friend like i read about in books, not just a “best friend” who I hung out with at school until she got bored of me and moved on and i had to wait for the next extrovert to pick me up and hang w me whether i liked them or not
even now having a best friend whom i love who even calls ME her best friend, still feeling like i cant be 100% myself around her and worrying she’ll think im weird and leave me
having a hard enough time making friends in school/college (literally its always taken me years at a new place before i make friends who i hang out w outside of class) but having no fucking clue how to make friends after graduating
almost always having to calculate what a normal response to a text would be, probably usually getting it wrong, even when texting my best friends who probably wont care what i say or how i say it
sometimes not having enough empathy, sometimes having too much? like hearing something bad my friend is going through and thinking “holy shit that sucks...” and having to calculate what to say that appropriately conveys the seriousness while also not really feeling it like i know I should? vs. sometimes hearing something tragic in the news happen to some strangers and start crying
i actually just read a really long list compiled by a social worker about common things shes found in women with asperger’s/asd and here are just a selection of the ones that REALLY resonated w me
“Often drawn to the helping, artistic, or animal professions.... horse trainers/whisperers, doctors, scientists,....animal handlers/zookeepers, university professors” I have at one point wanted to be/volunteered as all of these things and am now pursuing being a animal behavior and conservation scientist and/or professor holy fuck
difficulty with conflict, asserting oneself and setting boundaries
agreeing to attend social events and then bailing last minute to be alone instead
copies, mimics others to act normal and fit in, but can suddenly burn bridges when faced with stress and conflict
may be described as “gullible,’ moreso when I was a little kid--I believed my cousins were dating nick and aaron carter :(
doesn’t always get jokes (it took me soooo long to get that some of the mbmbam goofs were goofs and not like, serious. then i thought the trolls 2 thing was an ongoing joke literally up until the movie posters were released)
has a hard time expressing emotions, esp verbally. it’s easier to type/write out emotions than speak them
dislike/not know how to ask others for help
can come off as too intense, may blurt out things that offend someone without thinking (tho I guess this could be adhd too)
“may give too much detail and end up boring others unintentionally” aka anyone who is still reading this--im so sorry
may have auditory processing issues, gender dysphoria
not instinctively knowing what facial expression to make or intonation to use
SENSORY ISSUES!!
emotional sensitivity “unable to watch violence on the news, in movies, see hurt/injured animals”
i’ve always been a really picky eater esp when it comes to certain textures and smells
getting so overwhelmed when my mom makes shrimp i have to hide in my room
auditory sensory overload (most common)
“may be very sensitive to pain” even when internal pain like cramps aren’t actually that bad they still completely overwhelm me and I can’t think
“may be clumsy and uncoordinated” lmao yeah
“may not liked to be hugged/cuddled/held, only like it when it’s their decision” UM COME TO THINK OF IT... YEAH???
“may rock, leg bounce, fidget or other movements with hands, twirl hair, stroke soft fabric to self-soothe” sometimes when im alone in my room i notice myself rocking a lot? im ALWAYS leg bouncing or finger tapping, and when I’m sick i always rub my skin as like a distraction for feeling sucky
i don’t so much have a daily routine but if you interrupt me when im in the middle of something or give me a last minute change of plans i WILL get upset
“Books, computers, the internet, animals, children, nature may be her best friends” just @ me next time jesus
may be asexual/less interested in sex than peers/value other things in life much more than relationships
special interests commonly include nerd shit and nature. collects things. invested in justice. introspection and self-awareness.
i’ve gone on long enough but there’s more.... idk what to do with this information tbh
