“Beautiful eyes” - Yakuza 3′s English lines in the Japanese script
I was curious about how those iconic English lines from those 3 gentlemen were subtitled in the original Japanese script.
(Yakuza 3 spoilers ahead)
- The first English speaker is Joji Kazama. Here are his lines:
The first line was translated as “So you’re Kazuma Kiryu“ in the English version. I wonder why Joji mashed up both languages like that in that line, considering he speaks fluent Japanese. His other two lines just stay in English, without subtitles. Any Japanese player that doesn’t speak or understand English is left as confused as Kiryu in this scene.
- The second English speaker is Yoshitaka Mine. Here is his phone call:
This one does have Japanese subtitles. I’ll provide a rough translation for some lines just to compare how close they are in both languages. Feel free to correct these.
Hello (もしもし / moshi moshi) - This is a typical way to answer a phone in Japan.
OK, got it (そうですか 了解しました / sōdesu ka ryōkai shimashita) - “Yes, I understand.“
No (いや / iya)
Theres no change in the plan (予定に変更はありません / yotei ni henkō wa arimasen) - “No change in plan.“
Bye (それでは / soredewa) - “Bye then.“ This is a typical way to end a conversation.
- The third and final English speaker is Andre Richardson. Here are his lines, split in two parts:
All of his lines have Japanese subtitles. I’ll provide rough translations for these as well. Corrections are also welcome.
Looks like you’re a little late (少し遅かったようだな / sukoshi osokatta yōdana) - “It seems (you are) a little late.“
You just missed him (彼はいない / kare wa inai) - “He’s not (here).“
If I’d known it would have come to this... (こんなことになるなら / konna koto ni narunara) - “If this happens.“ This obviously doesn’t make sense if it’s read on its own without the following part.
...I’d have killed you when we first met (最初にお前に会った時 殺しておけば良かった / saisho ni omae ni atta toki koroshiteokeba yokatta) - “I should have killed you when I first met you.“ Here’s the rough translation of the full sentence: “If this was going to happen, I should have killed you when I first met you.“
If you’re looking for Daigo, Mine’s taken him up to the roof (堂島大吾なら屋上だ 峯が連れていったよ / dōjima daigo nara okujōda mine ga tsureteittayo) - “If it’s Dojima Daigo (you’re looking for), he’s on the roof. Mine took him there.“
You’re welcome to try (お前にそれが出来るかな? / omae ni sore ga dekiru kana) - “Can you do it?“
This is the end of the line for you, Kazuma Kiryu! (ここで終わりだ 桐生 一馬! / koko de owarida kiryū kazuma) - “This is the end (for you), Kiryu Kazuma!”
I’m afraid your role in all this has come to an end (お前の役目は終わったようだ / omae no yakume wa owatta yōda) - “It looks like your role is done.”
Oh, there are plenty of people who could replace you (お前の代わりはいくらでもいる / omae no kawari wa ikura demo iru) - “There are many substitutes for you.“
And unfortunately... (すまないが / sumanaiga) - “Sorry.”
...you both know far too much for me to let either of you live (私の素性を知ってしまった以上ここで2人とも殺すしかない / watashi no sujō o shitteshimatta ijō koko de 2 nin to mo korosu shika nai) - “Now that you know my identity, I have no choice but to kill both of you here.“
Die (死ね / shine)
What!? (なんだ!? / nanda)
What the fuck!? (どうして お前が...!? / dōshite omae ga) - “Why (are) you...!?” There is no exact equivalent for ‘fuck’ in Japanese. You can find very rude and aggresive words but they’re nowhere as strong as it is. The Japanese subtitles for this line most likely try to convey Richardson’s surprise to see Daigo alive.
Dammit! (クソ...! / kuso...!) - “Shit/Damn...!” Here you have one of those rude words. In this case, it’s used as an expression of anger or frustration. It’s also used as an insult in other situations. I think you can hear it quite frequently in the Yakuza games. I’m certain Kiryu tends to say it.
I won’t let it end like this. I’ll kill you all! (お前ら 皆殺しだ! / omaera minagoroshida!) - “I’ll kill you all!“
Die, god damn you! Die! (死ね! 死ねぇぇ! / shine! shineee!) - “Die! Dieee!“
Stop! Stop! (やめろ! 放せ! / yamero! hanase!) - “Stop! Let go!“
Stop it! Are you nuts!? (やめろ! なにをする気だ!? / yamero! nani o suru kida!?) - “Stop! What are you going to do!?”

Tokyo Tower (Part 3) Spy Games
Fingel is an unexplored character in most of Dragon Raja Novels. His past is shrouded in mystery and is revealed little by little in hints and tidbits across the novels. So even though there are five novels out, I still can’t say I know that much about him.
The phone rang twice by the time you crossed the room to get it. It was an ornate metal phone standing on lion paws with a turn-style dialing wheel and an earpiece that looked like the brass handle of a castle door. Still when you pick it up you answer. “Pizza Hut. How can I help you?”
Caesar’s smooth voice carried a smile over the line. “Hello MC. I take it you’re all settled in?”
“There wasn’t much to settle. I could rattle around in this place.”
The premier suite of the Takamagahara was second in luxury only to Whale’s own full floor living quarters. This area was nearly one thousand square feet. Coming into the entrance, the floors were covered in mahogany reclaimed from an old dojo. The silk wallpaper shined bright from the walls all the way up to the ten foot vaulted ceiling that hung with a magnificent chandelier.
The sitting and dining rooms were furnished with antique World War II era wood furniture. A grand piano occupied a space near an arched window. The kitchen area was the smallest area as most people who could afford to stay here didn’t bother cooking for themselves. Half that area was just the expansive wine rack and liquor cabinet.
The bedroom floor was a rosy Berber carpet. The king-sized bed took up most of the space. Its tall ornamental posts were overlaid with a silken canopy of gold. The walk in closet was bigger than the entire area you’d stayed in until now.
The bathroom had marble tiled flooring, heated of course, a jacuzzi tub big enough for four people and an infinity shower with more buttons than you knew what to do with.
You roll your eyes around the room, sitting on the bed in your satin lavender night dress, your wet hair wrapped up in a towel. “It’s quite the upgrade.”
“You don’t sound that enthusiastic.”
“I’ll miss falling asleep to voices outside my door.”
Caesar paused at that, silent.
“A wise young man told me that… the world… as it pertains to you, is only composed of the people you know. Even though I have gotten the privilege of staying here, my world has gotten a lot smaller. You boys get on my nerves a lot. And we don’t always see eye to eye. But you are my entire world. Don’t forget it.”
“I bet you say that to all the guys.” Caesar replied.
“Yes! All the guys in my world.” You laugh at his throwing your words back at you. “Anyway… How did the meeting go?”
“Smoothly, much to my surprise. The main target is the King General. Ruri Kazama will be the assassin, Lu Mingfei will be running a sniper position. Fingel will be providing a listening point by laser sensor on the windows. Chu Zihang and I will both be guarding the perimeter in an underground garage from a nearby building to avoid infrared detection. Our job will mainly be to stop the King General from escaping. There are two places you can be. Either with Lu Mingfei as a second sniper, or with Chu Zihang and I on perimeter watch. Take your pick.”
You think seriously on this point. “Hmmm… where will Mingfei be stationed versus where you guys will be?”
“Mingfei will be on top of one of the surrounding buildings with his rifle. Having you up there might be a reassuring second shot should he need backup or suppressive fire. Snipers need teams but we’re low on manpower. Chu Zihang and I will be fine underground. There’s a cable duct we can crawl through. That said… being underground is right in your Soul Skill’s wheelhouse. Either way you choose will enhance the team.”
After a moment more thought, you say “I’ll go with Mingfei.”
“...Dammit.”
“You deserve it. Have fun on your date with Chu Zihang.” You stick your tongue out at him through the phone.
“Hey, he and I are on good terms now. It’s you I worry about. Don’t you think seeing the men who took everything from you not that long ago might shake you up?”
“You don’t go into a rage every time you see your father do you?” Caesar was silent and you waited for him to speak but he didn't. “Do you?” ask again with some surprise in your voice.
“Not...externally. I didn’t think of Herzog as your father.”
“A cold hearted person who kills without much thought doesn’t sound familiar? There’s a reason I am the way I am.” You slip under the heavy comforters on the bed while holding the phone to your ear.
“You’re not cold-hearted.” Caesar’s voice was more of a command than a statement.
“I can be.” You respond. “Hearing his voice again will be like going home.”
Caesar sighed with exasperation. “Let’s change the subject. Have you thought about my proposal yet?”
“I think... it’s crazy that you’re willing to lie to the Academy about my bloodline problem then install a know-nothing freshman to the rank of Leader of the Japanese Branch, but yes, I have thought about it.”
“Good, then your training starts now.”
You squint. “Training?”
“You need to know some basic things about Dragons, but you’ll catch up on that knowledge at your leisure. More importantly, you’ll need to understand how to navigate around the Yakuza here. Remember that Fingel is assigned to monitor the Japan Branch for the principal?”
“Yes.”
“You just happen to be the beloved of the Devil Clan commander. That makes you a valuable information asset. Fingel may seem to be a numbskull but he’s a master spy. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s wiretapped this phone and installed listening devices and pinhole cameras all over your room.” Caesar said this in a growl. “He was evasive when I asked about it so I can guarantee you he has. I don’t want him to be looking at any lewd pictures of you.”
“Are you serious? But I’m a fellow student?” You’re completely appalled.
“He does this on campus! He’s a dog with no morality! But he’s useful, that’s why I keep him in the Student Union. I know him well. If you’re going to be the leader of the Japan branch, learn to find bugs and hidden cameras. For every one you find, I’ll fine him five thousand dollars and give it to you. This phone is probably tapped so I know he’ll hear me say this.”
You flip back the covers. “Oh my gosh…” You start opening drawers and looking inside. “Thanks Caesar,” you sigh.
“No problem. Just looking out for you as always. Go to sleep in an hour regardless. It’s a big day tomorrow. Fingel, 5,000 for every one she finds.”
You start with the bathroom. Given his love for racy photos that would probably be a hotspot. In 10 minutes you managed to find three. Fingel needed to find good angles of the Jacuzzi and shower and there weren't that many places to hide and get good shots.
There’s a loud knock on the door. You grab your claw-dagger and creep forward, flipping off the lights. “Who is it?”
“R-r-room service.”
Fingel. The phone really was tapped. You straighten up in disapproval. “You’re too late, I already found three.”
“No! Wait, please. I… uh…”
“In the bathroom…” Your voice is low but it carried enough threat through the door.
“A just leader shows mercy?” came Fingel’s whimpering voice. “I don’t have 15k okay?”
“Wait a moment.” You cover yourself in a long robe and return and open the door. “Fingel, you’re dressed as a waiter. Taking cues from Ruri Kazama already? You probably infiltrated the room while I packed and talked with Caesar.” He was tall but cringed away from your icy stare.
“H-how could I not, right? I’m a quick study! But let's not talk in the hall, the first rule of being undercover is not breaking character!”
You let him in and shut the door. “In that case, I can understand why he gave you a stage name so quickly,” you say.
“The lady has a very clever boyfriend!” Fingel seemed pleased even though he had no say in the matter.
“I’ll give you the devices and say you found them. But only if you remove all the devices from the room. Understand? Remove all of them and show me where you hid them and how you did it.” Caesar wasn’t going to teach you about spy objects and hidden devices, the master spy, Fingel would!
“Of course! Of course! But I have to keep an eye on you right? Second rule is knowing where everyone is at all times!”
“You will not know when I got to the bathroom!” You hiss.
“I will know because that is now a blind spot.” He sighed mournfully but then ducked when you reached for your knife. “Okay, okay! You have to be quick on your feet. Assume you’re being watched at all times and observe everything! Caesar already warned you right? I’m on assignment from the principal to watch the Japan branch!”
“So this will be an ongoing lesson!” Your eyes widened.
“Precisely.” He winked.
“You’re wearing a wire.”
“What? No, I’m not!”
“Don’t worry I can’t see it but I assumed it after you said that. You are. Am I supposed to search you too?” You start walking towards him. “Five thousand dollars…”
Fingel for a moment, looking for an exit. He finally reached into the inner lining of his jacket. The listening device was just a small button-like object and a little copper wire pinned to his shirt. “Wow… it’s so small!” You marveled.
“You… probably wouldn’t have found it if you looked!” Fingel said with a rueful grimace. “But I can’t afford to take that chance.”
“How did you know this is the room I would be in?”
“Oh that was simple, prepping a room this size for occupancy requires a lot of staff. I just looked natural enough to be co-opted automatically in the work. If anyone asks questions, I just pretend I don’t speak any Japanese!”
Fingel walked the room. “None of the surveillance devices are in anything that can be moved easily.” He paused by a light switch, took out a tiny screwdriver and removed one of the screws. A listening device was right behind it! “People can move furniture or cover it. Any good spy will put a device in an area that’s more permanent. There are exceptions of course. It depends on the target. Usually, I will spend as much time as I can studying my target and her habits. I have to fit into her world.” His smile was surprisingly gentle. “Since you are a Cassell student, I didn’t need a lot of information to fit into your world. I just needed to show that I was with Caesar and Chu Zihang and you automatically assumed I was clear and never thought of me again. Right?”
You sigh, completely and utterly overcome. “You’re right. I immediately let my guard down and assumed I could trust you.”
“Caesar knows me better than that.” He pocketed the device.
Caesar called him a dog with no morality. Your pupils sharpen like a knife. No way he would remove all the devices. He was going to leave a few for you to find.
Fingel’s eyes meet yours. “You’re a quick study.”
“You’re going to decide how much this costs you.” You say coldly. “You have money. You can afford it. You’re conspirators! This is a game!”
“Woah! Woah! I do not have money!” He holds up his hands.
“So the devices you leave will be the hardest ones to find.”
“Bingo!” He winked. “I gotta keep an eye on you. No offense. But now you’re thinking like you should be. You need to test people, even Cassell personnel from the Academy. Remember that I came here as an intern. There is little trust between the Japanese Branch and the Main School, so I was tested thoroughly as to my credentials. They knew me better than I knew myself on arrival so my acting started long before I arrived.”
You nod. “That’s right. Our rooms were extremely tailored to our needs on arrival to Japan. They only knew I was from Northern Siberia, but they knew that because of the way I spoke.”
Fingel tilted his head. “Good. This isn’t going to be as difficult as I imagined. You understand now that this is a normal thing, to intensely spy on each other. I had to do whatever I needed to do, to prove to the Japanese students that I was one of them.”
“You do bad things?”
Fingel passed up the kitchen and went right to the bedroom. “I do my best not to. An easy way to get out of doing something really terrible is to pretend to be completely incompetent. So they’ll assign something like that to someone else.” He pulled the night stand from the wall and unplugged the phone wire from the jack. The wire seemed to be inserted normally into the wall but it wasn’t! There was another phone jack cover under the first one. The first phone jack cover had a small computer chip that was intercepting the phone information and diverting it to where he was. Fingel had successfully installed this listening device in plain sight.
You’re not sure you would have found it.
“You answered the phone as a Pizza Hut employee. Where did you learn that?” He tosses the device to you and you catch it.
“I liked to watch James Bond. He always had a special way of answering the phone so that only people who should be calling him are calling him. If it's an outsider who doesn’t really know me, then they will assume they dialed wrongly.”
“Yeah, that surprised me. But Caesar knew it was you so he wasn’t surprised. That’s a good technique. Keep doing that. But change it up a bit so it fits the area you’re in and it’s not so obvious.”
He straightened up. HIs demeanor had changed while talking to you into someone much more serious and quiet. “I’m all done. If you find the last device? I’ll give you the 5k myself.”

Status of current investigation: Ongoing
__________
A Murder of One
Hex adjusted the dial on the receiver on her headgear tuning in to the frequency of the microphone planted in the bar below her. She hoped the ungodly amount of paperwork she traded for the device was worth it. The other detectives at the station simply shrugged at her evidence- or rather, her lack-thereof.
Still it didn’t change the facts.
Fact 1- Low level criminals are disappearing.
Fact 2- People are disappearing
Fact 3- No one cared- but her.
Fact 4- Takei Kenji, one of the missing, had recently been seen in the area and was seemingly ‘not himself’ as described by the anonymous tip that was forwarded to her.
Takei Kenji, age 27. Minor invulnerability quirk. Last known occupation: ‘Nightwatchman’ for a warehouse commonly used for clandestine meetings for the local riff-raff. Reported missing by his mother 3 weeks ago.
After speaking with Mrs. Takei, she pieced together Kenji’s new schedule. After tailing him a few days he truly seemed like a new man, reformed.
His dress was proper and pristine, clean shaven and hair combed and presentable. It was a stark contrast to the photo used on the missing person flier taped to her pinboard (along with all the other missing persons). With no discernible pattern, at least not to her, about the next victim(?) or the whereabouts of any of the others, Kenji was her best, and only lead.
Tonight, she could expect him to show at one of his usual haunts. The bar below her. Not to her personal taste, the clientele of the more stabby nature.
Earlier that week she managed to convince the bartender to spill a few snippets of the conversations between Kenji and the other patrons.
“The Bard this, The Bard that.” griped the bartender as he dumped the trash into the alley dumpster. “It’s pissing off my regulars and they’re pissy enough as it is.”
He should have been here an hour ago though. Hex sucked on her lower lip, displeased as she scanned the road leading to and from the bar entrance. She’d give it another half hour then try and regroup on his trail in the morning.
“Cheers to another late night.” she muttered to herself listening in to the chatter and ambiance of the dive bar.
________
Her 30 minutes go by and she huffs before finally switching the receiver off. She’d go by tomorrow to get the mic back. Just as she was about to stand from her perch Hex heard the unmistakable beat of wings above her, large ones, judging by the sound.
It reminded her of her father. Probably one of the last people she wanted to see right now. Especially since her only lead ditched her for the night.
This night sucks.
Hex thinks to herself, finally looking up intending to see the dark wings of King Crow finally come to drag her home but instead, she sees red.
This has to be the reason Kenji never showed. The thought bounces around her head angrily as none other than the number 2 Hero in Japan descended from the nightly heavens and landed on her rooftop.
This night really sucks.
“Yo!” Hawks held up a hand in greeting neatly folding his very noticeable wings against his back, shoving the other hand into his pocket.
“Will you get down!” Hex harshly whispers, gesturing him to stoop down and out of sight.
“Jeesh, hi, hello how are you? I’m fine, thanks for asking.” he jokes casually but still squats down feet planted on the ground resting his arms on his knees. Hex shakes her head and resumes her post looking up and down the street despite her previous resignation.
“You’re Hex right?” he starts “I’m-” She cuts him off not taking her eyes off the street.
“Obviously I know who you are. Everyone knows who you are. Especially every lowlife in the area who’ve probably fled after seeing your chicken legs flailing in the wind.”
“Ooo, ah, that’s my physical appearance. That hurts you know.” Feigning being wounded, Hawks placed a hand over his heart but still kept the jovial tone. A smart smirk inching up his cheek continuing.
“But you’re not after ‘every lowlife’, though right? Just the one. Takei Kenji?''
She turned to him and tilted her head, large round eyes finally meeting his sharper, more angled ones.
“How did you...?” she trailed off, honestly surprised. It wasn’t common knowledge on how her ‘investigation’ was going. Uncommon because, well quite frankly… no one cared. Especially other Heroes.
“Sorry Chickadee but I got some bad news.” Hawks stood back up and crossed his arms leaning against a nearby cooling unit.
Hex rolled her eyes
“Don’t call me that. What happened?” She looked up at him.
“Well, one of my guys found your guy in… not great shape.”
Hex cursed running a hand through the back of her head, then sighed.
“How bad?” prepping for his answer.
“Morgue bad”
“Dammit!” cursing again, pinching her brow reeling from the implications.
“Your buddies at the station said you'd might want to know as a professional courtesy” brow pinched once more, Hex felt the annoying start of a headache between them.
“Courtesy? For what...” a thought flashing through her mind and she stood eyes going wide “Don’t you dare close my case!” jabbing a finger in his direction.
He turned his head to face her more, still calm, still leaning, still observing.
“Close it? Oh no, wouldn’t think of it Chickadee. I’m taking over the investigation.”
Hex gaped. Momentarily at a loss for words. The frustrations starting to come to a point at the back of her neck, feeling an uncomfortable bristle forming.
“What no, you can’t! Do you know how much work” gesturing wildly with her hands “How much time! The favors I had to do, the resources I scrounged for-”
“Which are no longer a problem.” He blocked one ear with a finger and shot her what would have been an award winning smile “No need to shout Hex. Obviously I want to keep you,” He paused, throwing a wink her way “Keep you on the investigation that is.”
Hex scoffed, her head bobbing back as she shot him an incredulous look.
“I don’t do agencies, and I’m no one's sidekick.” she threw another annoyed jab of her finger in his direction.
“Ooo touchy. Freelance then. Sound good Chickadee?” Hawks held up his hand to maybe physically shield him from her ire.
“Stop calling me that and maybe I’ll let you help”
He smiled-no smirked again pushing off of the cooling unit he was leaning on stepping towards her shrugging his shoulders.
“That doesn't sound like a mutually beneficial arrangement to me.” Hex rolled her eyes and crossed her arms haughtily with a huff.
“And how does calling me stereotyped nickname benefit you, birdbrain.”
Hawks chuckled. He didn’t expect it to be so easy to ruffle her feathers.
This was going to be fun.
“Isn’t that how these buddy cop movies play out? One hard-ass with a secret heart of gold and their handsome, comic relief partner put aside their differences to crack the case and learn the meaning of cooperation and friendship. Roll credits”
Hex tilted her head and shot him an unamused expression, opening her mouth to speak.
“I am not a hardass-” she stopped herself holding her palm up to stop the little banter she was getting pulled into. “Can you circle back, Takei Kenji?”
“Can we circle back to this team up? After all this is my case now?”
Hex scrunched up her nose, not pouting, she told herself, and re-crossed her arms.
“Sounds like something a hardass would say.” she snarked and he grinned again, throwing his arms up bringing them down behind his head.
“You caught me. Hawks, the hardass with a heart of gold. Guess that makes you my handsome, no wait, beautiful partner then. So how's about it Chickadee?”
“Uhg” Hex clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes again. Squaring her shoulders she placed her hands on her hips
“I want a contract. Full access and authority over any and all future developments and details about my case.” Hawks nodded but shot her a finger gun.
“Our case.”
“Whatever!” she sighed looking up at the night sky hands still on her hips.
“The agency manager can draft up whatever you’d like tomorrow. Let’s go see what Kenji had in his pockets shall we?”
Hex nodded reaching up to her headgear. She flicked the visor portion that was pushing her hair back over her eyes. The experimental mirrored tint softening the city night lights. She switched the setting on her earpiece making sure the seal around the was snug. Hawks floated a foot above the ground looking a little bored as he waited.
Show off
Hex activated her own quirk, the bundle of jet black feathers at the base of her hair sending a shiver down her spine causing other inky feathers to erupt from her skin. The ebony plumes forming patterned rows along her arms covering them completely.
Letting them creep upwards to the sides of her neck but stopped them before then could go any further on her body. Just enough for her to achieve flight. She did a small jump maintaining the upward moment with a strong flap of her feather covered arms and started for the station.
Harpy Hero: Hex
Quirk: Harpy- Half human, half bird! She’s able to do most things a bird can do and then some! Most notably, she can grow enough feathers to achieve flight.
______
There is no traffic in the sky and the previously chatty #2 Hero was silent during their flight. Hex was thankful, it gave her some time, however brief, to think.
This new development was...tragic. Someone would have to tell Mrs.Takei in the morning.
It should be me...
It’s just, Kenji was small time. So why would he turn up dead?
And more importantly...
Hex cast a look in her periphery at the Fierce Wing Hero.
How did this fall into the lap of the number 2 Hero?
______
Hawks landed first. Not bothering to tame his windswept hair but did look up to observe Hex’s descent. She wasn’t quite as fast as him, well, then again, no one was. But she was graceful and skilled as she navigated the air currents.
Fanning her wings wide Hex slowed her movements getting ready to land. A few more well practiced flutters and she also touched back down. Before she can remove her headgear she dispels her feathers. Casting them off with a quick flick of her arms. She hardened them into slivers then ground them to sand with another flick to minimize the mess and general rudeness of not picking up after your quirk.
She adjusted her headgear and hair and blatantly ignored the cheeky claps and nods of approval from the man besides her. She strode past him and up into the station. The night reception paid her no mind but did double take when they saw Hawks’s crimson wings engulfing their foyer.
Just outside the morgue waited a man with an impressive and well manicured mustache. He wore a white button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, suspenders and the first few buttons open.
“This her boss?” he asked in an accent indicating that he was from Australia.
“Hex,” she offered “And you are?”
“Duke Amazing. Pleasure.” he greeted offering his hand. She was not expecting such a strong handshake.
“Given the circumstances” she trailed off. “You found Takei?”
“Well, what’s left that is…” Duke gestured to the door he was waiting in front of “They’ve finished up for now. Just waiting on the bossman for the paperwork and whatnot.” He made another gesture in the direction of a door a little ways down the corridor.
“They’ve got his belongings in there”
“Perfect, cross the t’s and dot the i’s for me Duke?” before his sidekick could answer Hawks was already starting down the corridor. Hex followed close behind.
Duke shook his head crossing his arms.
“June’s gunna pitch a fit again Hawks”
“Op, can’t hear you, the doors closing!” gently shoving Hex in the room and hastily closed the door behind them.
“Uhg paperwork” He bemoaned and leaned against the door
“Paperwork” Hex commiserated but was already looking over the items laid out on the small table.
There wasn’t much but everything was bagged, labeled and detailed on a piece of paper next to the items.
There was a small wallet, no money, a personal ID card. An older model cell phone, unusable. Most likely damaged in whatever altercation Kenji found himself in.
“Probably a burner” Hawks shrugged “Still, I'll get someone to pull the numbers.” He made no move to examine the items himself but instead watched Hex very carefully as she examined each one.
She cupped her chin as she looked at the final piece of evidence, brow furrowed.
“I’ve seen this before...” she commented, turning over the small business card over front to back several times examining it.
While it was the same shape and card stock as a business card it held no information. No address, phone number, or even a business name. All that was printed was an indigo triangle.
“What is it?” He was curious because he had no idea what the shape meant either.
“I…” she started, brows still furrowed. “I have no idea, but I know I've seen this...”
She placed the bagged card back on the table and leaned over it rubbing her hand to the back of her neck smoothing down her feathers there. The memory of where she’d seen this particular shape eluding her.
“Maybe at his apartment?” she muttered to herself, then sighed
“I’ll have to go back over my notes.” Hex leaned up from the table and unzipped her jacket pulling out her phone and snapped a quick picture on the item.
“How about we meet back up tomorrow then. Let me give you my number.” Hawks held out his palm asking for her phone. She was just about to hand it over but thought better and pulled it back causing him to catch air.
“No social calls, no memes at 3 in the morning, no unsolicited pictures.” her tone stern
“What if they’re tasteful?” he made a grabby motion with his hands and gave his brows a waggle.
“They’re never tasteful.” she quipped back but finally relented and handed over her phone.
Hawks flipped it over in his hands and quickly typed in his information jokingly setting the name for his number “Unsolicited dick pics” with an appropriate emoji next to it. He sent himself a quick text with her phone then clicked hers off and handed it back to her.
He was extremely pleased when she didn’t double check his contact info and simply zipped the phone back into her pocket. His little joke would be a fun surprise for the morning then.
“Send me where you want to meet tomorrow” She pressed her fingers to the back of her neck again “I’m heading out. Looong night”
Hawks moved away from the door and let her pass, parting for the night.
“Well that led to a whole lotta nothing” He mused to himself finally taking his turn to look over the offending card stock.
“It’s never an easy mess to clean up is it?” He tossed the card back on the table.

Chapter 14 – Thnks fr th Mmrs
And I want these words to make things right, but it’s the wrongs that make the words come to life.
Alone. In my apartment. With way too much food for me to finish without puking it all up, too much alcohol for me to be around in such an emotionally precarious state, and an overwhelming understanding that I shouldn’t be in this situation any longer than I need to be.
I called Ritsuko first, half hoping she would pick up and half hoping she wouldn’t. She answered after the second ring.
“Hey, Risa! I thought you were busy with Riku and Daisuke’s return.”
“I was.”
“Your ‘was’ is worrying me.”
I take a deep breath. “Can you come by? Please.”
“Yeah! Yeah—let me just finish up something first, and I’ll head over as soon as I can. Can you hang in there until then?”
“I’ll try.”
“Okay, Risa, now you’re really worrying me.” I heard movement from her line. “Do you need me to bring you anything?”
“Just empty Tupperware. Please take home some of the food I have here.”
“Gotcha. Just wait for me, alright?”
“Alrighty. Thank you.”
“Always, hun.”
We hung up, and I stared at my phone. Ritsuko would be enough, right? I scrolled through my contacts until I saw Takeshi’s name. Did I need him over? Could he even be over? And what about Akane? Would she—
ACHOO.
The sneeze cut my deliberations short as I accidentally pressed the button to call him. And, after my round of sneezes ended, I heard a faint voice blessing me from my phone. I brought it to my ear, realizing it’d be too late to hang up now.
“Hey, Boss, are you feeling alright?” he asked with genuine concern.
The words rolled around in my head, like bingo balls bouncing around in their cage. I could say yes, effectively putting an end to this conversation and just dump everything onto Ritsuko. Takeshi would tease me for days about this call, but—
“No. I’m not.”
There was silence until I heard a muffled voice that sounded too high to belong to Takeshi. Akane?
“Akane’s asking if you need anything.”
“Just bring some empty containers. I have too much food here. ”
“Awesome!” I hear noise muffling the line. “I’ll be on my way soon.”
“You don’t—”
“Nope. Nu-uh. I don’t want to hear it, Risa. I’m going to be over soon, and there’s nothing you can do about it, okay?”
“…okay.”
“Okay? Good. I’ll see you in a bit.”
He hung up, and I looked at my phone resting in my lap. Ritsuko and Takeshi were heading to my apartment to comfort me after Riku blew up because she found out about Satoshi. In other words, the world was going to explode in my face, and there was nothing I could do about it.
If I could help it, I wouldn’t tell them, but the secret was out. Knowing Riku, she’d intentionally blab about it until she finally came to terms with it. Which probably won’t be until after she’s razed Azumano to cinders. Besides, I’d rather they hear this from me than her. Better from the primary source, after all.
Dammit, Kazama. I really didn’t want to cross this bridge this soon. (Hopefully, this won’t bring that ugly mug of his back to Azumano again, either.)
Some time had passed as I sat there, unmoving, unable to process anything, slowly decaying with each breath I took until I heard them. They didn’t need to ring my doorbell. Ritsuko and Takeshi’s angry voices carried through the walls of my living room.
I sighed before getting up to open the door. And, sure enough, I peeked out into the hallway to see them a couple of units down. I glared.
“You guys better get in here before I throw out all my food.”
“This is your fault, Fukuda!” Takeshi screamed.
“My fault? Let me remind you that—”
I closed my door, mentally readying myself for any potential noise complaints as I returned to my spot on the sofa. When I heard them finally knock on my door, preluded by sweet silence, I let them in.
“Friendly reminder that I do have neighbors so please, for the love of God, keep it down. Thank you!”
“Yes ma’am!”
Ritsuko, still having not seen my place, gave herself a tour while Takeshi stood by the food, silently deliberating on what he’d take back with him.
“Sorry I couldn’t help you move in!” Ritsuko called from my bedroom.
“No worries! How was your business trip to Sapporo?”
“Honestly? I’d rather have suffered at the hands of moving stress than what I dealt with there.”
“Sorry to hear that.”
Ritsuko eventually finished and closed my bedroom door behind her. She sat on the sofa, and Takeshi joined her on the opposite end. They looked up at me, expecting and scrutinizing, and I sat down in the space between them to keep them from fighting.
I felt my arms start to shake once I realized that there was no turning back once from this.
“So, what’s up?” Ritsuko asked.
“Just…give me a bit.”
She nodded as I took a couple of deep breaths to calm myself down. They didn’t really help though; they were only delaying the inevitable.
I took one last deep breath.
“…I was Hiwatari’s friend with benefits in high school. And he ghosted me a month before we graduated.”
They balked. Ritsuko quickly regained her composure, but Takeshi just looked like the world had suddenly turned upside down.
“I know we all had our suspicions, but…” Ritsuko couldn’t continue.
“Holy shit. Holy shit.” Takeshi paused. “This is what you were keeping from us? I knew it was bad because Satoshi was somehow always very specific yet very vague but—oh my god.”
“Who else knows?” Ritsuko asked.
“Some of the adults managed to piece it together, and I thought that Hiwatari-san kept it to himself like me…until he told me that Daisuke found out.”
Ritsuko looked at me in horror. “Oh no.”
“So guess who told Riku while being drunk out of their mind on their trip to Zurich?”
“No.”
“Yup.”
Takeshi groaned. “Daisuke, buddy, I love you, but how the hell could you pull a Satoshi with the last person on Earth you should’ve blabbed it to?”
“’Pull a Satoshi?’ What the hell do you mean by that?”
“Fukuda, I don’t know if you’ve had the—ah—displeasure of drinking with Satoshi, so let’s just say that he has no filter when he’s gone. One time, he said…er…”
“’Er?’” Ritsuko repeated.
Takeshi looked at me. “I don’t know if I can share this.”
“After Risa’s statement? You could literally tell me the world is ending tomorrow, and it would still pale in comparison.”
Takeshi bit his lip. “Well, since it involved Risa, I suppose I can. Just brace yourself. Please.” He then directed his attention towards Ritsuko. “You didn’t hear this from me, Fukuda.”
“Just. Spit. It. Out.”
“Risa, um, I don’t know if he told you this already, but he was practically in love with you in high school.”
Ritsuko gasped. “What?”
“Oh, I know. He told me in Vienna.”
“What?”
Ritsuko looked so distraught compared to Takeshi, but he was probably only taking this marginally better because he knew more about the situation. And since I already had enough time for me to decently process everything, I was faring the best out of the three of us. How funny that the ones I called to keep me company while I was distressed are the ones left even more distressed by the situation.
“Okay, okay,” Ritsuko said. “I understand why you didn’t tell us about it, but I don’t understand how or why this happened.”
“Fukuda, get with the program here!” I felt her glare, directed at Takeshi, pierce through me. “There was nothing to be done here.”
“Bull. Shit.” I winced. “They both loved each other; therefore, they cared about each other. If they really cared enough, then they probably wouldn’t have ended up in this mess in the first place.”
“That was their problem: caring about each other.”
Being stuck in the middle of this felt like the personification of what was once my mental state. Their increasing volume, directed at my eardrums, really wasn’t making this any more pleasant than when it was contained in my mind.
“They would’ve found some way to talk it out then. What, did they not trust each other or something?”
“Bingo.”
Ritsuko stopped arguing, and an expression of bemusement erased the frustration from earlier.
“Risa, explain.”
“I…don’t think it’s my right to explain. Well, not for him anyway. Maybe ask Takeshi later if you’re so curious. Or ask Hiwatari out for coffee sometime and get it from the man himself.” I forced a laugh. “Trusting people is hard when you’ve gone through stuff, you know?”
Understanding what I was implying, Ritsuko nodded. I saw tears bead at the corner of her eyes, and she excused herself to my bathroom, leaving me and Takeshi left on the sofa.
“How’re you holding up?” I asked him.
“I honestly don’t know how I’m still keeping it together right now,” Takeshi hollowly laughed. “I know more about it than most people, but I’m still in shock about it. I get why it happened, but like, Satoshi’s the most logical person I know, so it’s just difficult for me to wrap my head around how he could let this train wreck occur.” He sighed. “God, considering how awful I’m feeling now, I can’t even begin to fathom how you two must’ve felt about the whole thing.”
“You can empathize?” I joked, if only to relieve the tension in the room.
“Boss, why do you gotta be like this now? I’m trying not to cry here!”
“Don’t you dare shed any of your tears in front of me.”
He retreated into my bedroom. Moments later, Ritsuko sat down next to me with puffy eyes and a red nose. She offered me a weak smile.
“If anyone should be crying, it should be me,” I said.
“Oh, can it. You want to cry, but you can’t, so you’re making all of us get dehydrated for you.”
“Crap! You’ve foiled my evil plan!”
Ritsuko laughed, and I smiled. Honestly, I was too numb to feel much of anything. Just having Riku find out the last thing I ever wanted to know about and barreling into my apartment with murderous intent was traumatic enough to shock the emotions out of me.
“Honestly though, I was so scared to tell anyone, especially you guys. What if you said that I couldn’t feel the way that I felt because I needed to be mindful of what Hiwatari-san when through? Or took sides, whether mine or his? I couldn’t deal with that.”
“Like Riku?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I get where she’s coming from. Even though I’m understanding of the situation, that doesn’t mean I’m not angry. There’s a lot going on here, and a lot I don’t understand, but I can see why you didn’t tell anyone back then, right? They’d tell you to cut him off, unaware of the baggage you two carry, and it would’ve just made you feel even worse about the situation, right?”
I nodded.
“Well, Saehara and I are adults who aren’t your family. And we’re also his friend. What you’ve said here won’t change anything regarding our relationship with him. Likewise, what he says about you when I ask him about it won’t change the fact that you’re an amazing person that I’m proud to call one of my best friends.”
“Ritsuko!” I pulled her into a hug that she returned.
“After everything that happened, this is what makes you tear up? God, you’re hopeless!”
I laughed, wiping my tears away as I let her go. Takeshi returned, looking like he had taken a trip through the seven layers of hell, but he grinned before sitting back down on the sofa.
We spent the evening digging into some of the food while watching a movie since I had done more than enough talking. And once they left, bags filled with Tupperware and wine, I retreated to my bedroom and collapsed on my bed.
I turned to the music box sitting on the nightstand, winding it up before floating away to dreamland.
…
I woke up the next morning, before my alarm clock would shock me awake or the sun would burn the inside of my eyelids, to my phone ringing. Most people wouldn’t think to bother anyone at this time but, cracking an eye open to look at the caller ID, he wasn’t most people.
“What?” I croaked, irritated that he needed me for whatever reason that warranted a call at this time of day.
“Good morning to you, too.” I could hear the smile in his voice. Damn bastard was enjoying this. “How are you faring from last night?”
“What do you mean?”
“Leaving you alone with all those bottles of wine after what happened yesterday? It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together; you’re probably hungover.”
“I am a perfectly functional human being who has other coping mechanisms besides drowning myself in alcohol.”
“Past experiences say otherwise.”
“I didn’t drink at all last night; I have Takeshi, and Ritsuko as my witnesses.”
Hiwatari fell silent on the other end of the line while I stretched awake, putting my phone on speaker as I got up. While I was making my bed, Hiwatari spoke up.
“So they know now.”
“I’d rather they didn’t hear from Riku, so I told them first. Sorry to tell them so soon.”
“It’s fine.” He paused. “Should I be expecting attempts on my life now?”
“Nope. They took it well, surprisingly. They might give you a hard time because of it, but no one wants you dead. I think.”
After smoothing out my sheets, I admired my handiwork before grabbing my phone and heading to the kitchen for some breakfast. “Anyways, why’d you call?”
“Partly to check up on you in case you were hungover, but I was wondering if you’d be okay with me walking you to the news station today.”
“…really? You called me this early in the morning for that?”
“I’d rather not be greeted by your choice designer handbag of the day in my face.”
“Who said I’m still not going to do that?”
“Damn. I thought this would lessen my chances.” I could hear the lilt in his voice, and I couldn’t help but smile. “I’m glad to hear you’re doing okay though.”
“I’m about as okay as I’m going to be considering. Thank you for your concern, though.”
“It’s no problem. And could you also open your door, please? This bag is quite heavy, and it might become a problem for me if I keep standing here holding it.”
My usual alarm rang and, startled, I frenzied over to my front door. I swung it open to see Hiwatari standing there, convenience store bag in hand, with unveiled derision on his face.
“…actually, seeing you fresh from bed might be a greeting worse than a purse smashing my face. Tokyo has not been kind to your skin.”
“Get inside before I smash your face with that bag in your hands.”
…
“So, how’s the engaged couple?” Takeshi asked before unceremoniously slurping his noodles and splashing some of his broth onto shirt as if he didn’t just ask a loaded question. He couldn’t be this obtuse considering what just happened.
“Why don’t you ask Daisuke yourself?” Hiwatari asked.
“After what happened when they got back? I’d rather not deal with Beauty and the Beast.”
“And you thought we would have the answer to your question?”
“Maybe not the Boss, but I’m sure you’ve got something, Chief. Gimme the deets.”
“Riku’s out for my head; Daisuke’s trying to protect it: the usual. I have nothing else to report.”
Takeshi groaned. “Useless! It’s like you want me to die in the lion’s den.”
“I’m sure an unsuspecting fly like you will survive just fine.”
And with that, Hiwatari started eating his noodles, effectively direction his attention away from Takeshi and cleanly cutting that conversation short. Thus, I was the next victim of his poor attempt at small talk. “So, Boss, how’s the ramen?”
“Beautiful,” I answered, eyes trained on the wisps of steam coming from my untouched ramen. I noted the sheen of the broth on the noodles peeking out, following the fat bubbles gently floating amongst the green onions.
“Er, that’s not—”
My phone rang, and I looked at my phone to see a text from Riku asking to meet up for dinner later. Considering what had just happened, I didn’t think it would go well, but this was my sister. As hesitant and terrified I was, I wanted to put this behind us as quickly as possible.
“Whozzat?” Takeshi asked when I put my phone down after sending out my reply. He slurped down yet another ungodly amount of noodles, and I tried to conceal my disgust.
Akane scored in the relationship department. Truly.
“Riku. She asked to meet up with her later, so that’s what I’ll be doing instead of enjoying the comforts of my bed.”
Takeshi whistled, shaking his head, before returning to his bowl. “Don’t die, Boss.”
“I’ll try not to; no guarantees.”
I then decided to dig into my bowl, truly savoring my first bite. May this feeling prevail during dinner.
“Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” Hiwatari asked, voice laced with concern.
“Yeah. What could possibly go wrong?”
Takeshi and Hiwatari looked up from their bowls with their eyebrows raised. Hiwatari’s skeptical expression, paired with Takeshi’s eyes that begged me to rethink my words, helped me realize that I was only fooling myself. My sister was a human, but she was a Harada. And, considering that we have practically the same blood, I knew the insanity that could arise from it.
No doubt, were this situation reversed, I wouldn’t have stopped until I had the head of whomever hurt my sister roasted on a spit.
“Okay. Fine. Everything can and probably will go wrong.”
“It was nice knowing ya, Boss.”
“Let’s relish in our last meal together before your premature death.”
“Oh, go f—”
“Irasshai!”
…
“God speed!” Takeshi saluted. I returned the gesture.
“We’re here for you if you need us later,” Hiwatari assured.
“Hopefully, I’ll be fine. And I’ll just bother Ritsuko if I need someone. You guys have done more than enough by walking me here.”
“What’re friends for? We gotta see you before you march to your death!” Takeshi chirped.
“Really?”
“Boss, your sister is terrifying.”
“Don’t mind him,” Hiwatari said. “Good luck.”
I nodded, waving goodbye to them as they walked away. And once they started talking to each other a considerable distance away, I took a deep breath before walking in. This was Riku’s favorite place to grab sushi, and I saw her standing by the hostess’ stand, a couple of minutes earlier than what we had planned, as she nervously toyed with a stray thread on her blouse. She noticed me and smiled before turning to the hostess, who greeted us with a blinding smile, as she led us to a booth with two menus in her hand.
Why the booth of all places? The bar was ideal: I wouldn’t have to face Riku, I could occupy myself by staring at the chef, focus on anything and everything but—
“Can I have a beer and a highball?” Riku ordered once our waiter came by. He then turned to me, expecting, just like the sister that sat across from me.
“Just some green tea, please.”
The water nodded, heading off to grab our drink and attend to the other patrons, leaving me to watch Riku flip through the menu. (She didn’t need to. Her staple was the combo of maki rolls.)
“Do you know what you want to eat?” she calmly asked me as if she wasn’t radiating anger and didn’t just order alcohol.
I was not making it out alive.
“Um, I’ll just have some ebi and tamago nigari.”
“You usually order something extravagant. Don’t be shy; it’s my treat.”
It’s precisely because this is your treat which is why I’m being shy. As susceptible as I am to free food, this was a gift horse I needed to burn. “It’s okay. I had ramen, and I’m still kind of full.”
“Huh,” she hollowly said. “Didn’t think your appetite could ever be quenched.”
And the crocodile snaps!
Before she prematurely exploded, the waiter returned to our table with our drinks. Riku ordered for us before the waiter headed off. I moved my drink closer to me, unable to enjoy the warmth in my hands as she downed her beer. I expected her to polish off that highball, but she called a waiter passing by, asking him to for a gin and tonic. Once he left, she grabbed her other drink that she finished in seconds before slamming the glass on the table and staring straight into my eyes.
In any other situation, this would’ve been a great time to ask what college shenanigans Riku got herself into considering what she did took skill, and we could laugh about all the ill-timed hangovers and nostalgia over a nice sushi dinner. This was me trying to imagine this as anything but what it actually was: terrifying.
“Honestly, Risa, what the hell were you thinking getting involved with Satoshi like that?” she asked, more disappointed than angry. “You should’ve known that was a bad idea.”
“Yes because I was able to rationalize while I was sick with the flu and the guy I thought would never love me kissed me.”
She groaned, reaching for her drinks. And when she found them both empty, she groaned again before slamming the empty glass on the table. Again. “If I wasn’t drinking right now, I wouldn’t be able to stomach your bullshit excuses.”
“Yeah, you’re right. All I’ve really got are bullshit excuses for what happened.” I paused our conversation when our water returned, drink in hand, as he placed it in front of Riku. I flinched as she reached out for it, scared she would down it again, but she merely took a sip. She looked at me when she finished, expecting me to elaborate. “I took the opportunity because I knew Hiwatari would—could—never accept my affections.”
“Do you know why he stopped talking to you and tried to erase you from his existence?”
“Did you know about it before Daisuke told you?”
“Not the specifics, but like everyone else, we knew something happened between you two back then. I thought the six years apart would’ve smoothed it out since you tend to over-exaggerate everything but—god. I didn’t think it was this bad.” She sighed before having another sip of her drink. “Are you guys stupid enough to think that getting closer would fix this?”
I shrugged. “Apparently.”
“You two are insane.”
“Just like what you’re being right now.”
She glared at me with a red face as the alcohol settled into her system. “I have every right to after hearing everything from Daisuke. Do you need me to—?”
“I know, Riku. Hiwatari-san told me himself.”
The rage in her expression fizzled out as she stared at me with wide eyes. Was this the ammunition she was waiting to use to get me to listen to her? Was she hoping that this would end it all?
“Y-you need to leave Azumano and get away from Satoshi,” she started. “This closeness can’t be good for you two. I-I don’t want to see you hurt again.”
Tears formed at the corner of her eyes, and she furiously wiped them away. Were those her true feelings hiding behind that animosity of hers? Or was it the alcohol causing her emotions to swing?
“I’m calling Daisuke to bring you home now.”
“No! I’m—”
“I’m calling him.”
She didn’t protest. She just sat in her seat, silently sipping on her drink while I headed out to call Daisuke. I returned to see Riku’s head resting on the table.
Passed out or asleep?
Daisuke came by pretty quickly, and I spotted him, completely flustered, as he approached our table.
“Oh, god, Risa. I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. Just make sure she gets home safe.”
He nodded, hoisting her up on his shoulder. I expected him to leave immediately, maybe whispering something under his breath, but he just stood by the table.
“About Riku finding out…sorry. I accidentally slipped up by saying something, and Riku kept pestering me about it and—”
“It’s fine. Just go.”
And with that, Daisuke left. The waiter then came, food in hand, wondering where my sister went. I told him not to worry about it, saying to just leave the food there and get me the check ASAP.
“Risa?”
I looked up to see my parents hovering at the edge of my table. They were excited to see me, but what were they doing here?
“Where’s your sister?” my mother asked as my dad slipped into the booth across from me.
“Home. She ended drinking a little too much, so I asked Daisuke to take her back home.”
My mom gasped before sitting down next to my dad. “Oh my, goodness. Is she alright?”
“I hope so. What brings you two here?”
“Actually, Riku was the one who asked us to come.”
“Why?”
My mom shrugged. “She said she’d explain it to us here. Do you know what she wanted to talk to us about?”
“No clue,” I feigned. The longer I kept my parents unaware of this, the better I’d feel. No way did I want to deal with the wrath of three Haradas at any given time. “You two help yourselves. My treat.”
“Thank you,” my father grumbled, cautiously eyeing the half empty drink Riku left, taking a sip of it, and slowly moving it towards him, before looking through the menu.
“Are you going to eat that?” My mom motioned to the maki set that Riku ordered. I shook my head, and she happily dug in.
I had a feeling the next time I met them, they would be hostile. So I enjoyed this brief moment, getting along with my parents for once and hoping it would never end.
…
Once I was at the news station the next morning, my phone started vibrating like crazy. My mom was sending frantic messages about Riku waking up with a headache, asking me if I was sure that she was okay. Riku certainly was far from okay, but I didn’t want to aggravate this already precarious situation so, like any responsible adult, I lied to my mom by telling her that Riku was having so much fun last night that she wasn’t pacing herself well before silencing my phone and stuffing it into the deep recesses of a pocket in my purse that I zipped up.
“Good morning, Harada-san,” the security guard greeted when I approached the elevators. “There’s someone looking for you.”
“Where are they?”
“Upstairs. I led them to your cubicle.”
“You just…let them in like that?”
“He showed me proper ID, but I can’t seem to recall his name. He just told me that he has official business with you.”
“…and you’re sure that it’s not Commissioner Hiwatari?”
“I’d recognize him anywhere, so it’s not him.”
“Okay. Thank you?”
He offered me a smile that I hesitantly returned before walking past him, mentally noting that we might need a personnel change for safety measures. Who could possibly need to have an official meeting with me and come by unannounced?
…oh shit.
Once the elevator landed on my floor, I rushed to my cubicle. There Kazama sat, leaning back in my desk chair with a mug of coffee in his hands, animatedly chatting with Takeshi who looked ready to keel over. Poor guy having to deal with him so early in the morning.
“And so—oh! Harada-san! The woman of the hour! You’ve kept me waiting!”
“And you’ve entertained Takeshi enough. Let him get back to work.”
As Takeshi passed by me, he patted my shoulder. I expected a look of gratitude of relief on his face, but he looked like he was on the verge of tears. “You’re a saint for saving me, Boss, but the Chief’s going to kill me for coming into the precinct so late.” He rushed out before I could even offer him words of consolation for the predicament this dickhead had put him in.
“It’s to be expected that a Hiwatari knows how to crack the ol’ whip every now and then!” Kazami chirped as I loudly dropped my stuff onto my desk. He was unfazed by the noise, but a couple of my neighbors peeked over the walls of my cubicle, wondering if they could get a glimpse at what had pissed me off first thing in the morning.
“So, what brings you here?” I ask, sitting down in a chair I reserved for guests because of Kazama’s snooty ass lavishly lounging in my comfortable one.
“That’s a rhetorical question, isn’t it?”
“Look, I know why you’re here, but couldn’t this have waited until I finished work for the day? Also, don’t you have super important cases to win back in Tokyo?”
“They’re not as important as getting some much needed R&R.” I scoff at his comment. “And am I not allowed to say hello to my favorite Harada?”
I wince at his words. “You’re not. I have work to do, and you’re bothering me right now, so you need to leave.”
“Not even a please? Goodness, whatever happened to treating your elders with manners?”
“Look,” I started in English, hoping my coworkers would have trouble understanding me, “my job already pisses me off enough, and I don’t need you to add onto that stress, okay? So if you could just lay off until this evening, that’d be great.”
Kazama whistled. “Amazing accent, Harada-san! I expected nothing less from a Todai graduate.”
I glared at him, and he stood up and gathered his things. “I’ll see you at Satoshi’s place for dinner, then?”
“If you’re cooking, I’ll pass.”
He chortled, knowing that I enjoyed his cooking far too much to miss out on it, and he left without another word. As I settled into my seat, I saw the peering eyes disappear in my peripheries. While I got myself ready for yet another day of work, I heard the murmurs of my coworkers as they concocted yet another rumor to spread about me.
Don’t these people have anything better to do than waste their time on the train wreck of my life?
…
As usual, Hiwatari met up with me outside the news station after the broadcast finished. We didn’t talk much on the way to his apartment, but we dropped by a bakery and grabbed a cake.
When we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely smell coming from the kitchen. Hiwatari greeted Kazama while I sat down at the table, admiring the cake through the flimsy plastic window on the box. All I had to do was survive an amazing dinner with not-so-amazing company, and then I could indulge in this beauty.
After talking to Kazama, Hiwatari headed into his room. He came out in yet another pair of ratty pajamas before slipping into the seat next to me.
“Have you talked to Daisuke yet?” I asked.
“No. It’s—I can’t bring myself to see him. I’m upset that he told Riku, but I’m mostly ashamed that it had come to this.” I nodded. “How was your talk with Riku last night?”
“She got super plastered, passed out at the table, and I had to call Daisuke to pick her up. She couldn’t last long enough to tell my parents about it.”
“Your parents?”
“Yeah. She was planning on telling them while half delirious under the influence of alcohol. Luckily, they didn’t find out, but I don’t know how long they’ll be kept in the dark about this.”
“Oh, juicy stuff!” Kazama interjected. He placed steaming hot plates of food in front of us, and it looked like he cooked extra for me to take home. “So, the older sister knows and is planning on making it worse by involving your parents?”
“Well, they have every right to know, but I’d rather they not.”
Kazama’s laugh trailed off as he went into the kitchen. He returned with two cans of beer, placing one in front of me, before plopping into one of the empty seats and opening his can.
“None for you, Big Boy. It’s what got you into this mess in the first place.” He took a sip. “Ah, that’s the stuff!”
For the most part, dinner went smoothly Hiwatari and Kazama rambled on about politics while I savored my food. When we finished, Hiwatari vehemently insisted that he do the dishes, leaving me and Kazama in the living room, crowded around the TV softly playing a rerun of an old drama, while Kazama cut the cake.
“For you, madam,” he joked as he passed me a slice of cake and a fork.
“Thank you, but shut up.”
When Hiwatari finished, he sat on the floor by Kazama. He helped himself to a slice of cake with a blank expression.
“So, the heart of the matter, you two,” Kazama started. “Run your next steps by me.”
“Jump off the cliffs and fall to our untimely deaths,” I grumbled before taking a bite of my cake.
Ah, how blissful.
“Seconded,” Hiwatari said.
“Ah-ah. The goal is to live, children. So, seriously, what is your plan?”
“Hope my parents never find out.”
“And if they do?”
“Die.”
“Harada-san! I trusted you to be stronger than this! What did you expect to happen as a consequence of your actions?”
“This. Exactly this. It’s just as bad as I envisioned it to be.”
Kazama laughed, clearly amused at our suffering, but he eventually calmed down. I expected him to say something absurd or rude to follow my statement, but he didn’t.
“You can’t control others, Harada-san. All you can do now is hang in there and take the punches.” Kazama paused. “Does your family normally react this extremely to these kinds of situations?”
“Yeah. They’ve always been over-protective, but I think it got worse after Argentine kidnapped me.”
Kazama didn’t say anything. Instead, he turned to Hiwatari and frowned. “Friendly reminder that this is your fault. I won’t protect you from whatever will come your way. Do you understand me?”
“Yes.”
“You need to accept that the family you found with the Haradas will change or disappear when they find out.”
Hiwatari’s lips thinned in a line. I didn’t know how dear Hiwatari held my family. Likewise, I didn’t know how fondly my parents thought of Hiwatari, either.
The thought of losing people never sat well for anyone, especially Hiwatari. I couldn’t imagine what he could be feeling right now.
“Well, since shit hasn’t completely hit the fan, you two should play it by ear.” He glanced at the clock on the wall. “Well, it’s time for me to visit the Niwas! Can’t wait to see how divisive everyone will be! Toodles!”
The front door slammed shut, leaving me and Hiwatari with a half-eaten cake and the TV blaring some annoying advertisement. I moved towards him, concerned at his slumped body.
“So, how’d the thing with my parents happen?” I asked. “I’m genuinely curious; after all, they’re not the Niwas.”
“Because of Riku.”
Hiwatari looked up and, after noticing the shock on my face, looked back down at the floor. “…you don’t know what happened?”
“This may or may not be news to you, but I also cut off contact with everyone in Azumano while I was in Tokyo.” I narrowed my eyes. “What happened to my sister?”
“After you left, she couldn’t leave her bed. She was nauseous, feverous, and could barely keep anything down.”
“What? Why?!”
“Apparently, whenever you two were separated for extended periods of time, Riku would always get sick.”
“Why is this my first time hearing about this? And from you of all people?”
“No one wanted you to worry. And you probably would’ve never found out if it weren’t for me. And this situation.”
“Okay, so what do you have to do with any of this?”
“When I heard about it from Daisuke, I decided to pay Riku and your family a visit. For whatever reason, they thought Riku’s condition was caused by some spiritual connection the two of you share because you’re twins.” Hiwatari frowned. “I don’t understand why you Haradas are so obsessed with mysticism.”
“You’re one to talk with that magical, artsy blood flowing in your veins.”
Hiwatari sighed before continuing. “It turns out that Riku was too anxious without you. Her brain was conditioned to think that the two of you being together meant that both of you were safe. So, whenever you were gone, she ended up worrying about both you and her.”
“What’d you do?”
“I told her you weren’t really gone. You were just living your life in Tokyo without much of a care in the world.”
“…I’m assuming that didn’t help.”
“Not at all.”
I laughed, and Hiwatari smiled before continuing. “Riku needed to learn how to live again for herself. So I made her exercise, go out with family and friends, and suffer through game night at the Niwas. I just needed to jumpstart her brain so that she wouldn’t crumble again when she returned to college.”
“Returned to college?”
“She had to withdraw from college during her first semester after failing her first round of midterms.”
Our eyes met for a couple of seconds, and the shock initially on his face gave way to an expression of hurt. “Harada-san…”
“Continue, Hiwatari-san.”
“Are you sure?”
“Continue.”
He hesitated, and I watched him shift his posture slightly to buy him some time. His hand slid closer to me, unable to move any further: all he could offer at this moment was half-assed consolation, but it was the only thing we could mentally accept right now.
I slid mine closer, thankful for the gesture but too afraid to fully commit, and Hiwatari continued. “Since she wasn’t getting better, I had to coerce your parents into taking her to therapy. She improved from there, and she was able to go back to college the following year.”
“How did you get closer to my parents then?”
“A little while after I started coming over to help Riku, your mother, in true Risa fashion, had sat me down once with coffee and asked me to talk about myself. Honestly, I mostly just sat there in silence while she bombarded me with questions.” I laughed. “But, while one of her daughters was AWOL, the other one practically unresponsive, she still somehow managed to genuinely care about how I was doing.” He paused. “From there on, your parents somehow found a way to make me feel at home. They let me breathe in a way that the Niwas didn’t. Even though I had an inkling they did it to cope with what was going on with the two of you, I felt like that was how it felt to have parents.”
“Huh.”
Hiwatari only smiled. “Well, anyways, my uncle’s right; I only have myself to blame for this mess.” He then glanced at his phone. “And as much as I appreciate this intimate session of catching up, it’s late and we both have work tomorrow. It’s time for me to walk you back.”
“I’ll be fine. Thank you for the offer, though.”
“…I would insist but, after the conversation we just had, please accept me calling you a ride.”
“Thank you.”
Hiwatari packed enough food to last me a week and enough cake to fatten me up in two evenings. I stood by the door, putting on my shoes, and ready to go home and think.
“Harada-san.”
“Mhm?”
Hiwatari looked lost for once. “Your ride is here.”
“Thank you.”
“And I’m sorry.”
I laughed at his awful timing. My hand reached out to playfully punch him in the shoulder but, after seeing that somber expression on his face, I stopped myself. Only then did I realize the gravity of the situation.
“…your ride is about to leave.”
“Yes! Yes, I’ll see you around.”
When the door closed behind me, I sprinted down. The driver was feeling especially chatty for that trip, affording me a handful of minutes to not think about the shit storm waiting for us. And once they dropped me off at my apartment, it took me everything to not march to Mizuame de Noisette and have an evening full of regret.
I headed up to my room like a responsible adult and decided, instead, to pass out on my sofa, unable to fall asleep despite the tinny notes that usually lulled me to sleep.
…
Daisuke had sent me a message the next morning asking if I could meet with him at the museum café. I sent a message to the group chat I had with Takeshi and Hiwatari saying that I had other lunch plans that day and for them to enjoy their midday meal without me.
So, whilst eating a chicken club sandwich in a sterile museum café, Takeshi kept spamming the chat with the lunch menu from some upscale restaurant. I silenced my phone before tossing it into my purse and giving Daisuke my full attention. He was digging into a salad and wincing with each bite he took.
“Um…are you alright?”
“I need to start losing weight for the wedding.”
I blinked, examining Dasiuke’s lean body for any sign of fat. The man was barely filling out his clothes. What weight was he trying to lose here?
“Please don’t tell me you asked me to come over for solidarity during this time of suffering.”
“Oh no. I just wanted to let you know that Riku’s planning on telling your parents about what happened with you and Satoshi before she left for work later.”
I nearly squeezed the filling out of my sandwich.
“I also wanted to apologize, but I don’t think that’s going to help the situation.”
“Well, even though you’re right, I still accept your apology.” Daisuke nodded. “Actually, I’m kind of also here to ask about what happened with Riku after I left.”
Daisuke looked up from his sandwich in shock. “Satoshi told you?”
“Yeah. Why? What’s wrong?”
“Well, Riku kind of made us promise her to never tell you about it, but if Satoshi decided to tell you, I’m sure he had a good reason to break it then.”
“Is me asking about how he got close to my parents a good enough reason?”
“Considering the impending situation on our hands, I think so. Besides, I think it’s good that the truth is finally airing itself out even if it’s a little…hectic right now.”
“You’re the last person who should be saying that considering this mess is kind of your fault.”
Daisuke sheepishly smiled. “I suppose you’re right then.”
I watched him cringe through another bite of his salad, and I had half a mind to order the menu item with the largest calorie intake. My future brother-in-law shouldn’t have to suffer like this right after getting engaged.
“Well, I honestly don’t know if I can add onto whatever Satoshi already told you. Since I was in college at the time, I only saw Riku on the weekends. She called me a lot because Satoshi was brutal with her, but I don’t think that’s what you wanted to hear from me.
“I will say, even though I am your sister’s fiancé, I do think that she’s overstepping a boundary here. I understand that she’s hurt, but what she’s set out to do is probably going to cause more harm than good.” Daisuke smiled. “But there’s nothing we can do about that now. Once she’s like that, you know it’s impossible to stop her.”
Our talk had made me lose my appetite, and I left lunch with Daisuke earlier than I thought I would. Takeshi came into the news station that afternoon to gloat about his amazing lunch date with Satoshi, to which I didn’t pay much attention to considering I was more worried about what would occur later that day.
When I got a message from my dad around the time that Riku usually left for work, I knew it was over. I messaged Daisuke, requesting that he ask Kazama to grab a table at Mizuame de Noisette later, and I marched home for what may be one of the worst evenings of my life.

I dont know if I can ask this, but in which routes did you like chizuru and which routes did you not like chizuru? Can you rank them if you can? I'm sorry that this question is so long!
[Note: I am getting to my asks a bit slowly, but I’m getting there. ♥]
Hi Anon! It’s not too long a question, don’t worry about it. :) I found this difficult to answer, but I’m pretty sure I know what you mean.
There are no routes in which I actively dislike Chizuru.
Chizuru starts out as a sixteen-year-old, middle-class girl, who is already showing amazing courage and love/loyalty just by going to Kyoto to find her father. Victorian / late Edo-era Japan was not great for women (neither were Europe or North America). This isn’t to say that the women weren’t strong people; the truth is that they were amazing, and they put up with and dealt with a lot. However, middle class in 1864 (wherever you were) meant enforced gentility--nothing like the self-conscious middle-class for foisting constricting social norms on girls and women.
That said, some routes made me more uncomfortable with the character than others. Also, while I don’t mind Chizuru being physically disadvantaged by size, gender, and (insufficient) training/experience, I do mind it when she doesn’t get to show the courage and loyalty that are a key part of her character. And curiosity! The girl is constantly poking around where she allegedly doesn’t belong (grin).
For once, I’m going to try to avoid too much detail (NB: I failed). It took me a lot more time to answer this than it should have maybe–and I’m still not convinced that I was able to get away from my biases about the various routes. :/
Routes where I liked Chizuru best as a character:
Souma (Chizuru as senpai was wonderful; ‘nuff said)
Heisuke (she slapped him when he wouldn’t snap out of the self-pity and ‘I’m no good for you’ routine; she was totally ready to fight together with him against the odds; she let him be serious with her, instead of seeing only the surface; she went after what she wanted)
Saitou (she stuck by him and made her own decisions–I found she was fairly self-determining on this route; she risked rejection to offer to listen, and gave pretty good advice; she tried to be playful with one of the least obviously playful guys in the bunch; and, er, so on–my bias is really showing here, but there’s a reason I like this route… grumbles in embarrassment)
Yamazaki (I like Chizuru stepping up to be useful, which we see clearly in this route–I’m a fan of the Chizuru-as-doctor’s-daughter role; she also has an important role to play with keeping Yamazaki-the-fury from going off the deep end)
Hijikata–mostly (she’s a little too passive and starry-eyed at times, but (a) not as much as I tend to remember, (b) he’s a decade+ older, beautiful, utterly determined, charismatic etc. - give the girl a break!; and (c ) she consistently pushes at his boundaries despite how brusque or angry he gets–even after knowing enough not to be starry-eyed)
Route where Chizuru was fine:
Nagakura
Kazama, probably (I’m not saying it’s a preferred pairing for me, but in terms of Chizuru’s character and actions, the route’s fine; she goes with Kazama to find the Shinsengumi, and she puts herself and her pride on the line to do it (she has to ask, as a favour); she doesn’t ever suddenly like Kazama early in the game, nor does she condone his behaviour/arrogance; she demonstrates good judgment in trusting him eventually; she doesn’t suddenly become passive, nor does she ever enjoy his sneers; she goes on to recognize his strengths in large part because (a) he matures a bit, which takes the edge off his sense of entitlement, and (b) he has the time to show her he’s consistent in looking out for her)
Routes where I liked Chizuru, but she was kind of clueless, or something else bugged me (about her) more than normal:
Harada (still one of my favourite routes because I like fluff dammit, as well as kind, protective guys who are–oops, just a little defensive of Sano!!; anyway, Chizuru was still brave as all heck, BUT she was a little too clueless at times over her own or his emotions; there’s the “nobody could really like me, I’m just a prisoner” problem, and then the “I’m a monster” crisis; and then she tries to sacrifice herself to go alone to face Kodo–I mean, what’s the point, and why isn’t she letting Sano make his own decisions about what he wants?; I know what she was trying to do, but it’s not a trope I’ve ever liked in romantic pairings - plus, lying is bad and she was going to end up full of fury swords; AND YET I didn’t mind too much because she was still brave, caring, working hard, and working toward both a personal and a big-picture goal)
Okita (Chizuru is willing to put up with an unbelievable (to me, who is clearly not Chizuru!) number of death threats and put-downs from Souji, for quite a while, and it really bothers me; I’m far more sold on this route than I used to be, but still stuck on why Chizuru would fall for Souji in the face of being called weak, useless, unintelligent, and a free-loader (I don’t believe he was genuinely teasing her until later on, for reasons); however, one must make allowances for physical attraction, and a personality designed to prefer dangerous, “difficult” guys (honestly quite possible--but Souji advocated killing her!); other than me wanting Chizuru to smack Souji upside the head on a number of occasions in the first part of the game (which would be a BAD idea, and decidedly unsafe), I do like Chizuru in Okita’s route, but much more as the route progresses and I can buy into the way they become close to each other)
--Okay, the truth is, I prefer both Okita and Kazama in AU settings. Good thing there are excellent fic writers around!
Iba (I’m neutral on Chizuru as a character, here; it was interesting seeing her more involved with her demon heritage, but I kept thinking she was lacking the fire and spirit of other routes, and could have been a lot more engaged and engaging–maybe I just need to replay the route?; I could see why she’d fall for Iba)
Routes where I wasn’t comfy with Chizuru’s character
Sannan (I was a little uncomfortable with her behaviour, because she seemed almost too desperate at times to ‘make the situation/relationship work’; but there were a number of things that I liked, as well–courage and compassion, especially; I concede that Chizuru has a notorious weakness for hard luck cases, so it kind of makes sense?)
Sakamoto (she seemed surprisingly fickle to the Shinsengumi, to me–she paid lip service to loyalty, and talked about being uncomfortable, but she seemed swayed by Ryouma almost from the start, whether by his looks, his boldness, or his declared take on Japan, war, and politics; meh–not sure I can be fair here, and the question was asked about my subjective opinion; I never saw her being personally active in this route; maybe I need to play it again and pay better attention!)

I went in aware of the (possible) retcons and shit but I watched the whole thing anyway. It’s some ungodly hour way past when I should’ve slept and here’s what I thought. I’m trying to be fair here when I give GG Strive’s story a 6.8/10
Visuals: This game is beautiful. 12/10
Voice cast: I enjoyed the dub. Not as much of a corny anime dub like Sign was, but the returning cast improved from that game -- or at least I thought so. 8.75/10
Soundtrack: One word: Incredible. The duo of Naoki and Aisha on vocals for all character themes -- ok they're only a duet on Ramlethal's [Necessary Discrepancy] but you know what I meant -- was a perfect choice. My favorite themes from when I played the second open beta back in mid-May were Giovanna's [Trigger] and Potemkin's [Armor-Clad Faith], but Leo's [Hellfire] really grew on me the most. 15/10
Game itself: Arcade mode was a fun challenge because I’m an idiot who did all 15 but I got really tired of fighting Nago over and over again. I’m not that great so I’m not worrying about getting the “Messiah Will Not Come” trophy where you fight him but he’s got an infinite blood gauge. Survival gives a good chunk of the lifebar back without making it too easy -- and the “mysterious challenger” at stage 10 being a shadowy Sol with neon red was an okay way to signal a checkpoint. 9/10 I’m not doing online any time soon because I don’t have a wired connection but I hear it’s ass and the tower placement is a complete lie.
Anywho, now on to the real post:
For a finale, the story was... slightly below average. But I’ll be honest here, I kinda had high expectations because of the hype from the past two (?) years, five if you count the total time between Rev2 and Strive's release dates.
The last time I was this critical of a sequel’s story was the gap between Borderlands 2 and 3, which was seven years. I'm going off on a tangent here but I'll sum it up so if you're not familiar with Borderlands you'll have an idea of what I'm taking about. In Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel, the Watcher (Eridian? that saved Athena from execution after telling Lilith and company of her adventures on Elpis with Nisha, Wilhelm, Timothy, Aurelia, and Claptrap) warned "Now's not the time for bickering, Vault Hunters. War is coming, and you will need all the Vault Hunters you can get". BL3 rolls around and there was no big war. Instead, we got a poorly delivered dumpster fire of a main campaign that spanned five planets and the main villains were some bratty livestreamer Sirens that run a planet wide cult. Seriously? The cast was poorly handled there too but I'll stop here.
In the case of comparison to another fighting game’s story, the game that comes to mind is Tekken 7 because if they aren’t a Mishima or Kazama or someone else in that fucked up family that’s plot relevant, they were given a shitty one-fight episode. Sure Nina and Claudio were in the main story mode but that's the thing: they were just there. The returning (dlc) series veterans, such as Anna, Lei, Marduk, and all the way to Zafina plus the newcomers Leroy, Lidia, Fahkumram, and Kunimitsu II weren't given much aside from a brief story snippet. Dare I say it but SFV did their new seasons newcomers and returning fighters justice as they all got episodes of their own. You read that right. Street Fighter V was better to its cast than Tekken 7 and Guilty Gear -Strive-.
Unlike the Xrd games, watching the story does not get you any money. The only difference I saw right after was that the Strive correlation chart updated. For what it’s worth, they could’ve done something like DBFZ’s story clearance unlocking a new character, or do an alternate costume where the outfit Frederick wears in the ending (and upon further inspection is the very same one he wore in the flashback) is useable in fights (it’d be hilarious but a good detail added in if you were to select that option but the name plate doesn’t display “Sol” lmao). If Ky has a palette that puts him in an open button white shirt, jeans, and what look like work boots, then let me play in the ending's lab coat, tanktop, and jeans dammit.
I kept track of how many of the playable cast showed up and played some part. Everyone except Ramlethal, May, and Faust appeared in the story -- these three were reduced to credit image cameos >:( Ram’s seen with Elphelt and Sin, while Ky and Dizzy are in the background. May’s with her crew, and Faust is in the desert somewhere or some shit with Chronus.
But even if they did show up, nobody else except like five people did jack shit. Giovanna, bless her heart, was absent for a long period then showed up to fight Nagoriyuki (who eventually sided with the good guys) but got her ass beat after he faked surrender. Potemkin helped but spent most of his time cruising at high speed trying to get to the White House. Ky and Jack-O didn’t arrive until the end either. Axl -- or should I say Will -- finally got to see Megumi again at the cost of I-No’s defeat. The dude got his girlfriend back at the loss of someone he considered a friend but the delivery felt forced as it was confirmed as she was dying -- wasn't part of her character that she has no recollection of a past? Her suddenly remembering a past boyfriend and being able to describe his appearance didn't really make much sense.
Chipp and Anji were in that comical highway chase scene, but then Anji's just wherever while Chipp's in the Pentagon control room. I get that someone had to stay behind and watch from the other side -- this role landing with Leo as he, Millia, and Zato were overseeing commentating on events from the castle’s war room like Brock and Misty during Ash's battles in the OG season of the Pokemon anime, while Daryl was at the G4 conference and Ky was on his way to the fight -- but the pacing and usage of the cast in this story was a mess. Yeah sure it has most of the GG cast in this installment's playable roster present but it didn't feel like a GG story -- really it felt like the live action Resident Evil movies where the source material's characters are sprinkled in, acting more as a "here ya go they're here don't expect much!" type thing.
Honestly, a step down from Rev because at least everyone in that arc were somewhat present with maybe one or two exceptions? Hell, even though they were added as dlc or in Rev2, Dizzy, Haehyun, Baiken, and Answer were in the main story. Being hopeful here when I say that I hope we see more of Goldlewis or get to play as him because his design is badass and so is his coffin flail weapon. On the side of fairness though, I have a feeling this isn’t exactly what Ishiwatari intended (this is unlikely but it's probably Katano's directing? Whatever in any case)? The general reaction I saw from others who’ve watched the story was that the subplots were half baked and the plot as a whole was pretty rushed. Happy Chaos / the Original as the main villain was Calypso Twins from Borderlands 3 level cringe and every time HC appeared on screen I wanted to mute it. There is the bonus story coming later this year, along with the dlc slots, so ehh? The interactions between Colin and Frederick were one of my personal favorite points even if this did turn into “Neon Genesis White House Down”.
“Brown bears don’t give birth to pandas.“
I’m sure like the others who actually paid attention to the story from the end of Xrd to Strive, my main question was this:
After the Justice / Jack-O fusion -- recall the “newly revived” Aria had purely red hair and Jack-O’s halo disappeared. During the mid-credits of Revelator, former friends turned sworn enemies turned frenemies Asuka and Frederick pretty much have one last declaration of war against each other, with Sin, I-No, and Raven as their witnesses -- Asuka even said “take good care of Aria”. Naturally from all of that, she’s not Jack-O anymore, right? Wrong. According to the game, what's inside of Jack-O is only a fragment / shard of Aria mixed in with Jack-O's projected personality (I think). How did they go from "let's do the fusion and guaranteed she'll return" to "yeah nah she ain't comin' back bro"
Xrd Revelator: "Pull this off successfully and Aria will fully revive as a human."
Strive: "Nah bruh. We lied. It just turned Jack-O human and what's inside her is only an unstable shard of Aria -- not the whole thing."
Back to the “final battle”, they don’t fight, rather Asuka removed the Flame of Corruption from Frederick's body (and somehow he got a haircut too). So really what was the fight in Rev2′s [After Story - A] for? Did he get nearly the life beaten out of him from Ky fighting dirty and left that crater in the park for nothing? Seems that way. Asuka lives on the moon and he's got a radio show now because (*bong rip*) that makes sense.
I’ll admit it’s a little cute that the feelings are mutual between Jack-O and Frederick -- he sees her as herself and not just a genetic copy but they expect us to think in the three weeks they've known each other that "oh shit I'm in love with this person" is believable -- and they live in the woods near a presumably 200+ year old space shuttle complete with the launchpad but come on now. That's some Russo Brothers level writing right there -- y'all remember Avengers: Endgame and how when he went across space and time to return the Infinity Stones, Steve Rogers threw everything away just so he could go back to his original era? The now depowered-so-he's-human-again Frederick Bulsara (the ex-gear and world's savior x times over formerly known as Sol Badguy) living in isolation away from his newfound family and friends gives off the same vibe. Especially after that one and only flashback where it's Aria's birthday and he was going to propose but the ring wasn't ready in time so he had that "error" to show instead.
#guilty gear strive#gg strive#don't mind me i'm just being really nitpicky#this isn't the first time i've been down about a sequel's story#and it won't be the last#hell even if it's dated because two seasons worth of cast have been released since then sfv's story was more enjoyable! imagine that#i was writing a fic that i set before strive but now i'm gonna go back and add in some stuff#mostly that flashback because it was cute yet sad
