Tumblr is such an interesting website because if you ask me as someone who frequents a lot of old websites, forums, and the like; it’s actually extremely similar to those sorts of “closed groups” in that it’s entirely user curated to the point 90% of the people who I interact with or who interact with me are part of at least 1 if not more common interests; for me it’s mainly ProjMoon related media. But it also almost entirely, though sadly not completely; lacks the toxicity we so often see on those sites, or even other social media sites; this is going to go a little all over the place but if you’re curious you know the drill by now here’s a little “keep reading” thing and my thoughts on everything will be below it:

We see this in a lot of forums on the internet that take up almost cult like “us vs them” motifs where even the admins involved will intentionally scare away or bully newcomers who get too comfortable and start actually, you know; using the website. However what’s really cool about tumblr is that because it’s such a diverse web of these sorta closed groups, we don’t see that here.

We totally do in some fandom spaces don’t get me wrong, but I genuinely feel comfortable just posting whatever random stuff comes to mind. I don’t believe any of my mutuals or even followers would randomly decide to say I’m no longer welcome or allowed to post in ProjMoon tags simply because “you also posted about some other random thing one time” it’s cool because in a sense this site functions as a way for us to get to know one another on a deeper level if desired, but while it gives me the power to DM someone, or send them an inbox message it also gives them the power to simply not answer it, to block me, or to go about their business as if I don’t exist and the thing is; doing so won’t effect how the site functions for them.

As a content creator albeit a casual one, using twitter was so strange because if I didn’t have enough followers for someone, they might not give me the time of day. Which yea it sounds scummy, because it is. However that doesn’t mean it wasn’t so commonplace that it was normalized and greatly accepted by other content creators who would often justify it with saying things like “we need to focus on growing our brand and if you’re not going to help us grow our brand then we just don’t have time for you because this is work this isn’t socializing.” Which man, this is why I literally go on record saying “I don’t like vtubers” I don’t mean Hololive or Nijisanji or any professional studio, I literally mean up and coming vtubers on twitter who have around 1,000 followers and think they’re such hot shit that they don’t have the time for someone with say 200 or so followers simply because “mah brand” 

tumblrs system functions in such a way however, where my follower count, and your follower count are things that are entirely nonimportant. Like, how many followers do I have? Take a guess? Here’s your answer: does it matter? At the end of the day no matter how many followers I have it doesn’t really change anything about me. It doesn’t gauge my ability to make a “banger post” or to fit in with a community, it doesn’t give you any understanding of how well I can joke around or put on a show. All it does is give you an arbitrary number to judge my worth by. 

What always amused me so much about my time actively trying to grow an audience via twitter was that so often I’d see these streamers with 1000+ followers only getting about 2 - 5 active viewers, and the best part about that is that genuinely a majority of the time that was them asking myself or the others they were in a collab with to also view their stream to help boost ratings, the people watching weren’t from their thousands of followers, it was literally maybe their 1 regular and the other people streaming with them or half the time literally themselves on a phone or in a different window. However they still looked at their flashy 1,000+ follower count and said “I’m better than you.” 

This is how we’re raised on the internet, we’re raised and conditioned to believe if my number is bigger than your number I am socially better and that I should be held in a higher regard than you, that you should desire to be my friend because I have an inherent worth that you do not. 

I mean okay hear me out real quick, when I tell you “I’m a vtuber/streamer/content creator” if that excites you at all, does it excite you because “my friend is a content creator and I would love to see what kind of silly content they make having got to know them and enjoying my interaction with them!” Or perhaps does it excite you because “maybe I could get popular by being their friend! They must have a huge following who would give anything to talk to them like I do!” While posing it like this absolutely does make it seem like a very “selfless vs selfish” reasoning, I promise it’s not that cut and dry; but at the end of the day I always find it interesting how people often find my more interesting when they hear I’m a streamer and content creator, but lose all that interest the moment they hear that I average between 5 - 15 active viewers. They don’t care that those regulars are really cool people who I’ve genuinely enjoyed getting to know and who I am always happy to see in my chat, and who I don’t address as “chat” but rather have gotten to know well enough that I can address them by their name or at the very least their username because I feel it’s a level of respect that should be shared when my audience is still small enough for me to do so. I understand if you have literally tens of thousands of messages scrolling by, you would have to distance yourself a degree from every viewer of course; but when I see someone with 3 viewers refer to their audience as “chat” it bothers me because it feels so subhuman to simply disregard the idea that there’s another living breathing person on the other side of the screen who is giving you their time and attention.

What does this have to do with tumblr? Well simply put tumblr is no different, I know it sounds silly or maybe even stupid for me to say this but I don’t enjoy looking over all my notes because “oh man I’m so popular and I get so much validation from seeing everyone interacting with me” but rather I really enjoy reading through everyone’s tags on posts they reblog from me because it’s a way for me to get to know them a little better, and it leads to me actually checking out their blogs and enjoying their original content, and this allows me in turn to piece together a little more about who they are as a person, and it makes me feel interested in reaching out and saying hi even if it takes a while for a conversation to really get started or even if they don’t respond right away or at all. I find that this site gives me a way to interact with others while being able to do my own thing and they get to in turn choose exactly how much of their time and attention they wish to give me, but they can always learn more about how I think and how I feel about things by looking through what I reblog or checking out my personal posts so they also have an idea of who they are talking to.

tumblr is a website that doesn’t ask me to fully identify myself, it doesn’t ask me to give you my first and last name, birth place, mothers maiden name, and my social security number; it asks instead for all the information you might need to start a budding friendship with someone, what am I into? What sort of things do I enjoy doing, engaging with, eating, listening to. This means you can latch onto any one aspect of those things and go “oh hey me too!” It helps break down intimidating walls and barriers.

I enjoy vtubing as a streamer because I don’t have to put MYSELF out there, I don’t have to be on camera, if I’m not having a great day and my hair is messy it doesn’t matter, if I don’t want to wear a shirt that’s okay too. However I still get to put everything that makes me who I am out there. I still share my opinions, I still play my favorite games, I still discuss my favorite music or joke around with my community.  It’s why I was offended on behalf of their viewers when a vtuber I was collabing with started outright ignoring the individuality of their audience distancing themselves harshly from the maybe 3 or 4 people who bothered to come out and support them.

I am not about to tell someone what boundaries they can or can’t set for themselves, but it does feel a bit rude to not give people the time of day, when they have given you theirs. It’s why I tell my community outright “the chat box is your domain, the live stream is mine; and all my streams are a collaborative effort between you and I to have a good time.” I once admitted on stream that the entire reason I enjoy streaming has nothing to do with the potential of fame or fortune but rather because it’s simply fun to feel like I’m sitting on a couch with good friends playing a game I enjoy and having everyone sitting on the couch with me going “wait who’s this Netzach guy? I thought we were talking to the Purple dude? I LEFT FOR 2 MINUTES AND NOW HE’S DEPRESSED” 

At the end of the day I’ve grown up as “the little guy” the person who didn’t have friends, the person who wasn’t good at music, art, or media; I’m not even great at playing video games or telling jokes. But what I am good at is treating people with genuine respect and kindness because I know all too well what it feels like to be judged by a number, whether it be your age, your follower count, or how much content you make. 

A friend of mine always tells me they feel a little sad when their art doesn’t get as many notes as they hoped it would; and we once had a discussion about how we have been conditioned by living on the internet to desire outside validation rather than being able to genuinely be happy with something. We have to not only be happy with the creation ourselves, but also see that others also deem it important and good, otherwise the imposter syndrome kicks in pretty hard.

I still remember when I once befriended a few people in an old mmorpg only to have their guild officer ask me why I was always hanging around with their guild, I explained that I was friends with some of the members and I felt like I fit in; he then told me I was an arrogant asshole and it’s something that stuck with me because I literally didn’t know the guy. Yet to this day I always favor putting myself down rather than building myself up, and tell people that “I used to be an arrogant asshole” which is funny considering I used to be, and still am; actually a very depressed idiot who just wants to make friends with people and has an extremely low self esteem. However whenever I try to feel confident or catch myself feeling good about myself I’m reminded that I’m just “an arrogant asshole” and that’s specifically why I’m careful about the company that I keep these days. 

That’s how the internet is, everything becomes a matter of “survival” where you feel a need to put yourself first even if it hurts others, and you might not even realize you’re doing it. It’s a sort of culture where we are so hardcore focused on “us vs them” that we have no idea that “they” are part of us, just a part we vaguely don’t agree with and therefore we divide ourselves off from. I have found that I walk a very fine line between “protect yourself and your mental health, block people who you don’t wish to interact with or who have wronged you, and never be afraid to set boundaries” and also “be kind to others and give everyone a chance because you never know if inviting a friendship today could be something you come to cherish in 10 years when you’re now very good friends with people all over the world all because you allowed yourself a moment of indifference and understanding.” 

On one hand I believe everyone deserves respect and to be heard and to be given the time of day, but much like how a streamer might distance themselves from their audience for the sake of setting boundaries; I cannot fault someone for being even overly cautious on the internet because I have surely been burnt far too many times for opening my arms to the wrong people and inviting friendship when I didn’t realize it would end in ruin.

CHAPTER 2: BACKPACK

Summary: Peter is 14. Recently got his Spider powers and is no longer friends with Flash. Ned is in the picture. They go on a high school excursion and Peter is set on finding Tony to ask if he can join the Avengers. Side note: Tony is not romantically/sexually interested in Peter until chapter 3, when they are in an established relationship. Warnings: Angst. They talk about death whilst not actually mentioning it. Flash is an absolute asshole as always.

“Mister Thompson, if you don’t take a seat this instant, it’ll be detention for you,” Mister Harrington threatens. Flash immediately presses his ass back into his seat and grins at Peter from a distance. They might resent each other now, but their infinite common interest in science, technology and Tony Stark has never faded. They don’t really talk to each other anymore and Peter is not expecting their broken friendship to ever be mended. Not with how Flash treats him these days, at least. The first cracks in their friendship appeared during their last visit to Stark Industries, when Flash became jealous of Peter for spending time with Tony. Flash’s behavior completely changed with his growing popularity at Midtown High. With regards to friendships, he ended up choosing quantity over quality. This resulted in him attempting to gain the schoolkids’ favors by bullying. Since Peter used to be his friend, he became an easy target. Peter might miss what they once had, but at least he managed to trade his friendship with Flash for an even better one. Ned Leeds enabled his geeky side and ever since the boy had helped Peter up after Flash had pushed him to the floor the first time, they became inseparable. Obviously, the school wanted to go to Avengers Tower to get them interested in pursuing careers in science and technology. Something both Ned and Peter already kind of were. As excited as everyone was to get a look inside the labs and workshops, there is a significantly higher interest in getting a glimpse of not just Tony Stark, but of any of the Avengers, now that Stark Tower has been rebirthed as Avengers Tower. However, there was another occupation that Peter also took interest in now that he had gained his Spider powers a little over half a year ago. Becoming an Avenger was his number one career dream. He’d no longer just help the little guy. He’d be able to help everyone. There’s nothing Peter wanted more than to run into Tony again like he did when they had the class trip in middle school. Maybe Peter could train under him? Learn from him? Tony would be the Master to his Padawan. He’d be an Avenger. All he needed right now was the courage to actually ask. Well, he’d have to find Tony- or any Avenger for that matter- first. … The second they set foot in the building, Peter grabs his bag and takes out the Science Rules cap that he wore as a child. He didn’t expect Tony to actually recognize him after all these years, but at least he has one point of reference he could fall back on. Security reminds him he’s not allowed to wear the cap inside, so he opts to attach it to his belt and have it hang from his hip. Flash makes an off-handed comment about it, but Peter ignores him. It still baffles Peter that Flash seems to feel no remorse for joking about the cap that he knows was Peter’s father’s. After the first two hours of the excursion Peter already starts losing hope. Most locations they go to are quite secluded and it’s not easy to get away from the security’s watchful eyes. They had to put their bags in a locker room earlier, so save for his web shooters, Peter couldn’t show Tony the suit he'd so proudly put together. If he would ever run into him. After hour three they’re finally allowed to go into the labs and actually do some tests themselves. Most of the materials they work with are quite harmless. The only thing that really could hurt them if they’re not careful is the bottle of slightly diluted bleach on their desks. At least all of the students want to make a good impression on Stark’s scientists, so they’re all on their best behavior. Everyone, but… “Whoopsies,” Flash deadpans next to Peter. The teen looks up surprised from his own workbench to see Flash, who is stationed next to him, purposefully elbow the bleach bottle. The opening up top is small, but some of the liquid still splashes out of it. Onto Peter’s hip. Peter stares at the cap that now has bleach splattered all over it and then back up at Flash who grins. “Guess it really is a one of a kind now.” Peter runs away from his spot to one of the security guards. He doesn’t trust himself to not start crying if he actually takes time to ask his question properly so all he can blurt out is: “Toilet?” The guard sees Peter’s panic and lets him out. “Uh, there’s one on the left right there.” “Th-thank-“ Water. Peter needs water right now. Needs to wash it out, even though the fabric is already lightening. Who knows, maybe he could wash it out with the tears that are forming in the corners of his eyes. He rushes and throws open the door, immediately starting the stream of water and shoving the cap under it. The further he can dilute the bleach, the better. His left hand clutches the little tag on the inside in an attempt to keep anything from spilling into it and messing up his father’s handwriting. A soft sob escapes his throat, but he’s startled to hear a urinal flush in one of the stalls. He sniffs and attempts to wipe away the tears with the elbow of his shirt. When he hears the door unlock he looks down in a half-assed attempt to focus on cleaning the cap. He bites on the inside of his cheek and clenches his jaw, feeling the presence of the man from the stall emerge. The man casually washes his hands next to Peter but his movement suddenly halts. “Peter?” Peter could recognize that voice in his sleep. His heart beats loudly in his chest and the world is spinning. He blinks before whipping his head up to lock eyes with Tony Stark. “Jeez, you’ve grown.” The man’s brows curl together at the look on Peter’s face. The boy breaks eye contact and looks forward into the mirror, only to realize his cheeks are red and his eyes are puffed. “What the hell happened?” There’s a moment of silence. Peter barely realizes that Tony recognized him. Knows him, still. Is concerned for him. Peter’s mouth opens and closes and he takes a breath before looking back down at the cap and continuing to attempt to wash out the bleach. “Bleach,” he mumbles. “Didn’t take you to be that clumsy.” “Wasn’t wearing it.” “Still.” Peter scrubs more aggressively now, tears threatening to spill again. He’s making a fool of himself and he wishes he could just disappear. “Hey,” Tony says quietly. “Hey-“ Peter’s eyes widen at a hand suddenly holding onto his lower arm. Peter’s frozen where he stands and can only watch defeated as Tony turns off the tap. Only now he feels how wet his cheeks are. When did he start crying again? “Damage’s already been done.” Tony takes the cap out of Peter’s hands and studies the lightened splotches on the front. “Don’t you think this looks cool?” He tries. “Don’t want it to look cool.” “I’m sure your dad won’t-“ Tony stops himself, knowing exactly why he shouldn’t finish his thought. He sucks at his teeth and looks away. “Sorry, how’s your mom?” Peter nearly laughs at Tony’s inability to read the room. “She was with him.” Mortified at his previous decision on how to continue the conversation, Tony takes a step back. Peter looks down at his wet hands and adds: “It’s okay.” “To be honest, no, not really. Are you taken care of?” “My aunt.” “Didn’t Richard have a brother?” Peter looks up again and grimaces, feeling like every word falling from Tony’s lips is a stab to the heart. “Fuck, I’m-“ “It’s okay.” “It’s not.” Tony shakes his head and moves closer to Peter again. “I’m sorry, kid.” The man scoffs. “I used to be better at this… Well, no actually, that’s a lie.” Peter swallows as the two just stare at each other in silence for a few seconds, neither of them sure where to go with this. The boy then clears his throat and moves to stand up straight. “I am, eh… Here on another excursion.” “High school this time, I presume? Or are you in uni already?” “Parents wanted me to have a somewhat normal childhood, so they didn’t want me to get ahead that far. My aunt honors that wish.” Peter now properly washes his hands, since his hands had started to tingle from the bleach. “Aren’t you bored out of your mind, then?” Peter raises his eyebrows and chuckles. “Maybe.” Tony’s wrist beeps and he takes a glance at his watch, sighing exasperated. He heads for the door and hands Peter the cap back on his trek. “Pete, I’m sorry, I gotta go. Give reception a call-“ No, is all Peter can think. Before he can form a rational though, he reaches out and webs Tony’s hand to the door handle, locking both of them in the bathroom. Tony stares down at the substance keeping the door shut and his hand attached to it. “What the-“ “I want to join the Avengers.” Peter is ready to hit himself in the head. That question was way too direct and now he’s really done it. Tony laughs surprised. “Oh, bother. You’re Spider-Guy?” Peter’s eyes widen. The man hadn’t said no. “Spider-Man.” “Right.” “Wait, aren’t you fourteen?” Tony asks confused. Peter’s aware his physique as Spider-Man is wildly different from what he appears as in daily life. “And a half.” “Kid, if that really is you, you need to stop before you get in over your head, okay?” Tony wants to step towards him, but is held back by the webbing. “You think I’m lying?” Peter crosses his arms offended. “Well, no, but-“ The billionaire shakes his head at the substance and scoffs. “You’re putting yourself in danger when you shouldn’t.” “I’m not stopping.” “What- are you an adrenaline junkie? Please, don’t tell me you’re doing this because of me. It’s not worth it, I promise you.” Peter stares at the wet cap in his hands. “Not everything’s about you.” He wishes he swallowed those words, but Tony seemed to be self- aware enough, taking the comment somewhat gracefully. “Then what is it about?” “Half a year ago I got these… Powers.” Peter raises his hands up to look at them and sighs. “I’m stronger and faster… And I- well…” He trails off and pulls his face together in a frown. “When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you.” “As inspiring as that is, you shouldn’t be doing any of the stuff I’ve seen in those videos.” Tony’s pulls at his wrist and swears silently. “Jesus, what is this made of?” “You… Watched the videos?” “Yeah, kid, I did, now please get this stuff off me?” “Right! It usually dissolves after two to three hours, but I have a dissolver in…” Peter falls silent as he realizes that what he needs is locked away by security. “Kid,” Tony threatens. “My backpack.”

yknow i was originally planning to not answer this bc of the way you’ve “presented” your point, but i do wanna clear what i said while ignoring your needless aggressiveness even tho it’s clear you’re not looking for a real discussion but just looking for an outlet to your anger. you probably won’t read my answer anyway but maybe if any of my followers share the same views, it’s good for me to explain lol. i actually put effort into it rather than throwing insults so it’s long, therefore under the cut

i feel like you’re purposely misinterperting me, once again probably just for the sake of being angry, but ok. yeah it’s more than problematic content, but man when i’m typing tags half asleep what else am i supposed to call it. fine, the writers are the ones who are ~problematic~, phrasing issue, does this part even really matter...? 

this fucked up content (is that better phrasing for you?) makes roughly 1% of the content on the site, from what i’ve heard (obviously i could be wrong, because it’s also really hard for people to measure considering the nature of a proper tagging system, aka if a fic has mentioned rape in it as in a character’s trauma people should tag it, but then is the data analyzer supposed to count it as rape content? probably not. anyway, i kinda went off topic), so i wouldn’t call that “run rampant”

either way, ao3 lets people host this content because of what i mentioned - you can’t actually monitor it unless you have real people running fic by fic to check, which is literally impossible, especially when your team is made of volunteers

and. as i’ve said in my tags. it beats the original purpose of ao3, which is to allow whatever fan content people want to make, due to fandom history

and like, this may seem obvious to you, but how can they choose exactly what counts as content that’s supposed to be blocked? when you say cp, do you mean fics abt highschooler anime characters? this probably counts, but what if the person who wrote the fic is 16 y/o for example? is it just as bad? what if the characters in the fic are aged up? where do you draw the line? (don’t bring up that one “don’t make sexual illustration or written content of minors” law, it’s about real minors, people on tumblr have a tendency to misinterpert that one and think it means cartoon characters) and how do you enforce these rules about stuff like rape? as i said, do you just delete every content that mentions it? what if someone’s venting their experience through a fic and does it in a proper way that doesn’t romanticize it? is it still not allowed? there’s too many “if”s and “but”s for this stuff, and if you try to enforce any rules about them you’ll end up censoring harmless content and survivors coping with their trauma through fiction, and as i said, this beats ao3′s original point which is to allow people to post the content they want with no censorship like previous fan content sites and hosts tried to. this is literally what ao3 was made for. 

ao3 has a proper tagging system and now a blacklisting system just so you won’t have to deal with this type of content that you don’t want to see. and yeah, if people don’t use it right it’s a problem, but it’s a them problem, not ao3′s problem. honestly, you don’t even have to use ao3 at all and you can easily avoid all of this if you want. 

as for the beta thing, i mean, okay? i don’t know enough about web design to see the problem with the site being in beta for years, esp considering they’re still adding features and tweaks. dunno what you might need a block feature on a fic site for (i mean, mean comments? i guess? bc if you don’t wanna see a certain author in search results you can blacklist them after all) but k, legit criticism, but don’t forget they’re also a team of volunteers and have life outside of this site too, obviously it won’t evolve as fast as sites made by people who work at it and get paid to do it. 

anyway, tldr, this shit is unfortunately all or nothing because of the nature of fandom spaces and content blocking, and ao3 would rather go with all (as in all content is allowed). if you disagree with their approach then don’t use the site, idk what to tell you. no one’s forcing you to go on it or look at fucked up content.

I have! My friend @neebluarts and I did a collaboration project where she produced the most beautiful art in the world to go with a lil comic I wrote. She’s amazing. Here’s the finished project.

Askbox Theme #3 -- DEITIES Relationships

Hey everyone! I know I've been quiet this first month of 2017, I’ve still been de-stressing from the winter holidays, and thinking about what to accomplish for the project and blog this year, along with other upcoming Real Life™ priorities. While I continue to work on the latter, I thought that I could at least restore activity on the blog with a new Askbox Theme!!

The premise for this third Askbox Theme is "DEITIES Relationships"! Submit any questions or headcanons regarding various relationships between the DEITIES cast, and I’ll try to write and/or draw a response!

All relevant responses will be tagged #Askbox theme and #DEITIES relationships, and full details and guidelines are under the readmore -- please be sure to read them before submitting questions to the askbox, thanks!!

Alright, so if you've followed me long enough, or if you've read the blog's FAQs, you'll know that I rarely disclose my own personal ships within DEITIES project. But I decided to make an exception for the upcoming holidays, because I like exploring characters relationships, and it’s more fun where there’s a good excuse reason to share them!

Starting now, and throughout the duration of February, feel free to submit general questions and/or headcanons that focus on different relationships between the characters in DEITIES Project -- including those of the supporting cast as well as the main cast. I'll respond the best way I can (barring any large spoilers), and I'll try to doodle responses as well, so long as I’ve given enough to work with.  And depending on how interesting the question  or headcanon is, I may even confirm a few of my own, as well!

Additionally, while this askbox theme is inspired by Valentine's Day, this theme is not limited to strictly romantic relationships -- I strongly encourage questions about non-romantic relationships as well! Different types of relationships will play a role in the main story, so it’ll help me to answer questions about a wide variety.

Here are a few examples of questions and responses from some past questions: Horus & Osiris (familial) // Sekhmet & Ptah (romantic) // Anubis & other deities (familial, platonic, etc.).

With all of this said, there are a few others things to keep in mind for this askbox theme, however:

(1) Please no #Character asks (questions addressed directly to the DEITIES cast), as they are still closed. I know some of you may be itching to directly ask the DEITIES characters about their relationships, but I'm not prepared to draw and write IC answers for them right now.

(2) Please keep your messages and questions from exceeding “PG-13″ for the blog. I don’t mind mild suggestiveness for certain relationships, but I will not respond to any messages that I feel are too explicit. 

(3) While I hope this won’t even be an issue, I absolutely want to avoid unnecessary shipping wars, or heated discourse over Which Ship Is Superior. I have my own headcanons for certain relationships in DEITIES, as I’m sure others might as well, so please let others support what they want in peace. If any real concerns do come up, I'll do my best to address or tag them as necessary.

Those points aside, feel free to submit questions for the askbox theme! I know good and damned well you won't read this because you never answer the issues that are exposed by this community but lemme be real with you, Staff.

This is a bullshit move.

I am not a huge adult content consumer. If it comes up on my dash, cool I guess. Maybe I'll like it if it's something cute and intimate for a ship I like, but I don't seek it out as much. So this doesn't affect me in the slightest. This does affect the writers and artists that are just producing harmless content of consenting adults participating in adult activities. Tumblr is a huge monolith of fandom and adult content on the web, while also still having circles that cater to other niches. I can't think of another site like it, except maybe Pillowfort but I don't have access to it. Non-fans can use it not only to share their niche interests, like photography, old war planes, or cars, but also to browse for pornographic content and also partake in kink. Fans often use it to express their creativity in the form of art, writing, in-depth analysis, music, etc for their fandoms. Some of these works, in fact probably a majority, are about couples/poly relationships, and many possess sexual content because that is a normal part of relationships for most. This also affects the kink community and marks one less safe space for them to share their content and discuss their interest and how to be safe, etc. I'm sure sex workers are thrown under the bus as well if they exist on this site. Are adult bloggers entitled to this platform? Of course not. All I'm saying is this ban on NSFW content is like amputating a leg when all you needed was to clean the wound and get some stitches. It completely bypasses the actual problem at hand and demonizes something that never in and of itself was a problem. The pedophiles and porn bots were the gash in the skin, and NSFW was the whole leg. The only reason the wound festered to the point you felt the need to amputate was because you did fuckall about it the like half a year or more people complained to you about this problem. The community never stopped tagging you and messaging you and reporting blogs to you in relation to these issues and yet nothing was done. You made it clear when you initially mass deleted the nsfw tag and disabled the adult content filter that you've had the ability to take care of this all along and only decided to do it because money was on the line. So no, you don't love Tumblr and community, you love the revenue you get from it.

You can say you have a zero tolerance policy for child porn all you want to, the truth of is in your actions; you never lifted a finger to actually delete pedophiles and bots/spam blogs en masse, to corral the "MAP community" or do literally anything about the porn bots that invaded the notes of any post with more than 1k notes until your livelihood was threatened directly. And your response is to talk about how much you care about a community you never listen to and then completely delete an entire and important facet of this website rather than actually putting in the effort it takes to moderate the site like every other platform does. No other social media platform has the problems that Tumblr does because they know how to build a stable and functional website!!!! Even fucking YouTube, which also gets a lot of flak, regulates its content better than you do.

You can make the argument of kids being exposed to content too young, but frankly speaking (hot take incoming) I think Tumblr is one of the best platforms for minors to explore their sexuality and gender. Should they actively participate? Absolutely not, that's highly illegal and dangerous territory. BUT I'd rather teens learn about themselves and their interests here than PornHub - Tumblr content tends to promote safety and education about different adult things, ie how to engage in safe BDSM, that other places may not. Even if one blog doesn't talk about it, another related blog might. (It also allows teens a much safer consumption of porn (let's face it, almost all non-ace teens browse even if it isn't legal) because they can look at or read relatively tame smut of their ships rather than some weird shit on PornHub.) The only other place I could think of that might be more positive about these kinds of things might be Reddit or Furaffinity, but this is speculation. And when in doubt, let the community sort out blogs that could pose threats to minors. DDLG blog trying to groom a minor or some shit? Let users report this blog and then review and decide how best to move forward. Obviously there's a lot of grey here, but as an adult who has been here since I was 14, I learned quite a few sex positive good things on this site. Maybe it's rose-tinted glasses, but I digress.

(Also I gotta just. Call you out on this one, chief. "Female-presenting nipple????" Really???? That's a fat L.)

No one is suggesting it's an easy thing to do and I could understand if the ban was temporary to give you time to work on an algorithm (that should have already been in place years ago) to sort out spam accounts and nefarious users. That would be acceptable, it takes time. But this is just garbage. This screams "we're too lazy to actually fix the real problem, so we're gonna get rid of everything related to said problem even remotely."

I love this community, despite Staff being so incompetent that this site has some major glitch or freakout pretty much annually. It may be obnoxious and quirky and sometimes downright unbelievable in its opinions, but there's no mainstream platform like this one. For all it's radfems, hot takes, "cringe," and other weird shit that happens on this hellsite, it really is a unique space that I have come to enjoy even though I talk shit about it all the damned time. I really hope you reconsider this decision because I do not believe it is the right one. Not because I am particularly affected, but because many of your users will be. And by extension, you'll probably lose more than a few bloggers. Not enough to put you under, but enough that it will be noticeable.

A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).  

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.
