Nature abhors a vacuum, and the Ghost Zone abhors a portal.
There’s a reason natural portals don’t exist for long. Their presence is unstable, going against the natural order of the realms. Usually, the issue is balanced out by the brevity of their existence; they collapse before things can shift too far.
But the Fenton portal didn’t vanish. They forced it to stay open, and in the process unknowingly upset that balance. Things were alright at first, but then the issues began to compound. The natural progression of souls ground to a halt.
It wasn’t immediately noticeable. But soon, the effects became undeniable.

#+to avoid potential issues with small fast-multiplying species like insects or bacteria i have come up with two solutions:#option 1: organisms need a certain level of intelligence to have a soul (so insects don’t count and thus can still die)#or option 2: the “progression of souls” thing goes both ways; no one is born either. population is locked at whatever it was when it starte#danny phantom#dp#danny phantom au#dp au#danny phantom prompt#dp prompt#could be a dpxdc or other such crossover thing but it’s not necessary
