Hi i want to talk about my all time favorite camera 📸
pls ignore all my grammar mistakes, i’m not professional reviewer 😂 i just wanna talk about this camera.
This is the Sony RX1Rii, this is the third and “most recent” version of this camera. i put “most recent” in quotes because this camera is almost 10 years old. don’t like the old age fool you because this camera can keep up with the newest cameras in its niche.
This little point and shoot sports a 42mp full frame sensor. YES, F U L L F R A M E!! This tiny camera is actually smaller than all the x100 series (minus the lens on it). The camera has an incredibly sharp Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f2 glued to. This camera has 399 af points, with eye AF. The camera is incredibly fast and accurate!! the camera is pretty much a tiny packaged Sony A7Rii!
One of my favorite features of this camera is the pop-up EVF! This is a feature that was added to only this version of the camera and it’s a feature that i wish sony continued to incorporate into some of their other smaller cameras like the A7c or a6k series!
Tumblr media
The camera does shoot video up to 1080 120fps, but does not have picture profiles such has S-log or HLG. This was a camera made strictly for photos, which is probably for the best because the battery life on this camera is terrible, any kind of prolong video shooting would absolutely burn through these batteries in minutes.
That brings me to my next point, my cons. There’s not many but i figured i’d point them out anyways for those who are interested in this camera. these aren’t make it or break it cons, these are just issues that hinder it from being the greatest camera ever released (IMO)
1) battery life, i believe it’s rated for like 220 shots. Ive definitely gotten it to last twice than that. That tiny body processing all that data on some of the tiniest batteries makes sense why it’s so bad. Luckily batteries are cheap and like i said they’re tiny, so they’re pretty easy to carry around!
2) no picture profiles in video. i know i touched on it briefly up above and this camera is mainly a photo camera AAAAAND hybrid cameras were just beginning to grow in popularity around the time this camera came out but it would’ve been amazing to have s-log in this camera for little snippets here and there. i know at the time IG and other photo sharing apps were mainly photo sharing apps, and a camera that was built strictly for photo has no business having usable picture profiles in video.
3) no crop mode in RAW. this one is weird to me because i know the A7Rii has an APS-C mode where you can shoot RAW photos with an inbody crop and there’s times that i’d love to shoot something at 50mm (35mm + sony’s 1.5x aps-c crop). there is a digital zoom option but that’s for jpg only.
4) PRICE!!!! why the fuck is this camera still being sold for $3200??!! this is a 10 year old camera with outdated tech. i bought mine used for $1900 (which is about the price of the fuji x100V at the time of purchase) and i still think that’s a little too much.
that’s really about it aside from minor complaints of not having tele/ wide converters. i’m also sure all of those cons stem from the small battery. I’d love to see all of these corrected in a Mk3 one day, but as of a couple weeks ago sony just discontinued the Rx1rii’s production. I’m being a little hopeful but maybe that means we’re getting a successor, i doubt it but a boy can dream.
I don’t really do reviews or anything but this camera has had my heart for the past 9 months so i had to show it off/ talk about it. this to me in the perfect everyday camera. it never leaves my side and comes with me to any and every trip! Im always blown away by the photos i create with this little camera and i know whenever a mk3 comes out im going to hop on the chance to buy on immediately!

Angel aided Sticks in collecting the armillaries, which they relocated to the living area. Sticks's occasional muttering occupied the otherwise quiet lease. 'Choly set down the film case cooler, and collected his cane from the middle of the drugstore floor. What was one more inexplicable event, in the grand scheme of such chaos? He pulled a kitchen chair from the lease into one bay window of the unlit store front, to watch the subcurrent of panic surge the Concourse. Finger whistles and occasional cowbell clanks cropped up in the crowd, muffled by the glass. His neck knotted up to match the gloved, white-knuckle grip on the cane in his lap.
Lights out. Nobody's home.
He wondered whether preparation on such short notice could brace the Lane denizens for a blizzard. Surely, a majority of their efforts constituted mall maintenance. With a secure structure, and communal kitchen and lodging, a majority of such a task didn't fall upon the individual, but rather the community. Beyond their dress, he could separate Laners from Satellites by their degree of agitation. The latter shared everything, often forced to share... but those who resided on the Concourse scrambled to get their houses in order. He snorted. See's had robbed the trio of the frenzy of a hurried host. Several hundred people lived on the Concourse, and several times that from outside flooded in through all five anchors and the main entrance. Packed shoulder-to-shoulder, already people had got to shoving and other such gestures. 'Choly's posture relaxed despite the deep bone chill setting in, and a quaint smile welled up in his pitying eyes.
Leave it to an unfettered display of human nature, to remind me how much I miss the old days. Nothing will ever be quite like a crowded mall during the holidays... What could worry them now! What do they even panic buy, toilet paper and cigarettes?
He let up his grip on his cane with one hand, to rub vacantly at his left forearm.
"My, Miss Cook certainly has her hands full with Anchor Inn's intake." Angel couldn't sit still. "My sensors are struggling with exact metrics, with so many signatures, but two checkpoints have declared the mall has exceeded maximum occupancy already."
Sticks groused from the open bathroom.
"And what, exactly, is maximum occupancy?"
"I'm hearing conflicting figures, but See's counts at least eighteen hundred so far. The Hall's already given clearance to permit overflow in anchor lobbies, as well as temporary lease crowding where tolerated." Angel went over to the bathroom. "And of course, Mister Bledsoe has a few house calls, for his chronic patients."
"And where exactly has Fresnel gotten off to?" came 'Choly's skeptical detached murmur.
"The Hierosacristan has gone to The Hall to speak with the Mayor. They're discussing matters in Keb. Would you like me to try to translate?"
'Choly could barely muster any objection in his breath:
"Stop eavesdropping, Angel."
He hadn't expected an answer, let alone a detailed one. It got under his skin to suppose Angel might have an accurate understanding of the entire premises, as it had self-affirmed earlier in the day. Once a DIA bug, always a DIA bug, he resigned: but at this scale? At least he worried less about Fresnel with these announcements.
"Should we proceed with shutting me down now, Sir?" When neither of them replied, it hemmed and continued its observations. "The Children of Atom are doing their best tending to the Concourse glass, in preparation for their religious rites. There's talk of door to door hospitality. They're especially delighted to provide, all things considered. Such a community-driven lot! Really, it's a shame their beliefs create such a conflict with the rest of the community here. So many mall patrons are set upon harassing them, out of an unfounded blame. The glasswork isn't wired together, and each contains admittedly imprecise amounts of radioactive fluid. There's no conceivable way humans could purposely synchronize hundreds and hundreds of different glass vessels to chemically fluoresce in unison! The church couldn't possibly be the culprit. Such a fuss over such a simple matter as visible light! But I'm afraid they wouldn't have a word of it from this fine specimen of General Atomics craftsmanship. Ah well. No matter the cause of it, gentlemen, you'd agree all this phantasmagoria has us all on edge. Am I right?"
Sticks hissed into a flinch, and turned off the faucet.
"Just let us blame the cultists and unclench a little, won't you?"
"Oh but they don't deserve to be the scapegoat, do they?" Angel succumbed to the drama of it. "Sir, do let me tend to that shiner. I'll fetch the iodine."
"God no."
"Is there anything I can do for you, Mister Carey?"
'Choly jerked in place, trapped in his own head watching the crowd from his comfortable darkness.
"What? No. I'm fine."
His walk was supposed to have alleviated stress, not piled it on. He reminded himself that while the public would not have access to over the counter drugstore provisions for several days, the Gate City Clinic would still remain open to oversee any medical needs he could not.
"You don't have pain receptors, so let me spell it out." The bickering continued. "Some meds hurt more than the injury. You're not splashing this ghoul's face with that shit."
"...Well, would you rather apply ice? There should be some still frozen in the cooler. Let me fetch a chip for you. Then we can initiate my shutdown protocols!"
"Hey 'Choly, bring me some of your ice," Sticks called after the robot. "And some of whatever you've got chilling in it."
"My walk didn't result in any food or drink."
'Choly stood. He picked up the cooler in both hands, still gripping his cane, and waddled it into the stockroom. By the time he sat down in the dark, Sticks brought in an armillary to light their way. 'Choly opened the cooler at his feet and fished out a piece of ice for Sticks, but the ghoul wouldn't grab it without him pressing it to his bruised, swollen cheekbone himself. To see the damage up close, 'Choly's eyes moistened. Sticks shut his eyes a moment and almost smiled, cupping 'Choly's hand with his own. He took the ice, and continued holding it as he retrieved a chair for himself.
"Fucking mall cops..."
Sticks watched as 'Choly got to work.
"If not food, then..."
"I have enough from the Blood Drive for my first batch."
"It's only been a week. Wicked. Of all the times to get caught up in real work, though."
"Angel, you've got my literature. Be a dear."
"Absolutely, Sir! Which texts do you require?"
"Just... set them all out, please. I'll sort it out." He opened the Merrick Index first, and flipped to the section for chemically treating blood. "Blood is perishable. Once the ice melts, it will spoil quickly. It's inconvenient, but if I don't work now... that's a huge chunk of the surety we have to figure out another way to reimburse. If they're shelf stable Stimpaks, there won't be any risk they'll spoil before we can deliver them in a few days."
"I knew that."
"Sticks, hand me the mineral spirits, please. And the iodine. First aid be damned–it's too rare to waste as antiseptic. You two are not to mess with a man's iodine!"
"Of course, of course. See, Angel? Told you we needn't touch the man's iodine. Oh!" Sticks plunked down the tin and bottle as requested, and with a certain surprise eyed 'Choly's recently reclaimed effect propped beside the desk. "Your cane. Where was it?"
"Oh, do come off it, Sir." Angel tossed him a wash rag for the dripping ice. "You told me to keep it a secret while you looked into repairing it, so Mister Carey wouldn't yell at you. It's returned to him now. This charade no longer serves to minimize grievances, so I'm your accomplice no longer."
'Choly didn't know which of them warranted his stupefaction. He thanked that he hadn't yet cracked into the blood packs, before this development. First, Angel had spouted off a dozen details from the local news, and now it seemed the robot could lie? Like many things, he blamed Sticks's influence for this development.
"It's right." Sticks sat back down, speechless for a moment. He forced a smile while he formed the words. "I should have told you when I broke it. Tripped on it a few days ago. Believe it or not, I'm not the most graceful in the pitch dark... I didn't want you to rip me a new one. So I took it to get repaired. I was out to collect it when See's grabbed me. I'm glad they were too mad at me right then to grill me why I had it to begin with. Might not've got it back inside."
As people passed behind the leases in the utility hall, his peripheral vision lingered at the utility door's window. The sight of the exit compelled him, in a brief and inexplicable panic, to escape the back way. The halted half-gesture of trying to stand settled him back into the chair. The See's stationed outside the door shifted their standing posture to where he could notice them. He masked his agitation as an attempted shift in comfort, and animation intimated himself with his texts. The qualities in the light which were neither red nor green prickled in an effulgent heterogeneous static. He rubbed at his eyes and forehead, overcome with a deep viscous nasal stinging.
"Angel, you've permitted me Mentats PRN[1] while we're here. Allow me a Berry for this, please. I need to be as sharp as possible."
"Of course, Sir. Today's been most hard on you already. I hope it helps." Angel produced the tin for him. He nodded in thanks and pocketed a lozenge in his cheek, but the Mister Handy declined the tin's return. "I can entrust you with the whole thing, while I'm turned off. I worry to have the whole store at your disposal, but I will have to have some faith in you to care for yourself while I cannot."
'Choly couldn't help but frown at the tin in his hand. He deflated and set it by the wall on the desk. The bright clarity of the nootropic chem smoothed out the fuzziness in his grey matter, and streamlined his cognitive processes. He commenced his work without another word. Sticks picked up some of the literature to browse out of boredom, and the trio cohabited in quiet for some time.
'Choly mixed a precise ratio of mineral spirits and iodine in condenser glassware. Handling what parts sat on the low temperature hot plate, he took notice that his reinforced officer's gloves exhibited some heat resistance, though by no means could they be considered heatproof. To the resultant benzoquinoline complex, he titrated the blood packs one at a time. He would have to determine a way to disperse the vapors next time. Then he passed this mixture through a separation funnel, and he collected both compounds that settled out. He piped these two substances into each of the syringe wells of empty autoclaved Stimpaks.
"Why didn't you dip into your max strength Mentats until now, anyway?" Sticks flipped a page loudly. "Christ, that stuff stinks."
"Standard Mentats work best for sensory dysregulation," 'Choly snipped, eyes steady on the opening of the wells of a pneumatic syringe. "Berries' cognitive amplification comes from tailoring the formula to maximize the potency of its neurochemical interaction. Doing so alters many of its chemical properties. Mentats exhibit a broad spectrum effect on one's various acuity. I'm finding that Berry does help somewhat with the light's effect on me, but it does one thing, and it does that one thing very, very well."
"Mostly asking 'cause I can promise they'd sell well here."
"Provided I can secure the secret ingredient..." He sniffed, to deflect from their withering funds. "We'll see."
"Knott had better not hold it against our surety due date, with them forcing our doors shut like this."
"Yancy's order will be ready to go, the moment the blizzard is over. If this batch satisfies the Satellites, maybe they'll request a big order like this with some regularity. God knows there's no shortage of blood running around this place."
'Choly's remark cut through Sticks all the worse sharpened with a deficit of affect.
Sticks was the first to break the extended quiet.
"You never mentioned you were in the Federal Fitness Registry."
"Ah. I had a feeling you'd picked up the declassified DIA documents. The chemistry texts would go over your head. What are you on about?"
Sticks sneered, but brushed it off.
"The FFR says here, you–" Sticks balked and gagged a bit. He used his feet to slide his chair further away. A hand went over his mouth. "Blue Flu. Fuck me sideways, and you've been kissing me with that mouth."
"Ridiculous!" 'Choly set everything down to scramble through his Pip-Boy's health diagnostics menus. "Basic medical biometrics have included New Plague criteria for decad– since long before either of our Pip-Boys were manufactured. If I had ever contracted any strain of the New Plague, my health metrics would indicate it. And yours is more advanced than mine. If you had it, yours certainly would."
'Choly leaned over to show Sticks the screen of health effects from which he suffered. When permitted, he showed Sticks how to access the same screens on his own device, to confirm that the Pip-Boys had diagnosed neither of them with the prewar epidemic virus.
Sticks accepted the plea, mostly for his own sanity, but he didn't scoot any closer.
"But Sir," Angel eventually added, dripping with hesitation, "you did contract it. Remember your influenza hospitalization in 2068?"[3]
Sticks flipped back to his place in the DIA printout, and soured at the fact check.
"You could've given it to me. Given it to the entire mall. To the Unfolded. Those saps you've let move in outside Concord." He stood, quavering and furious. "Goddamn bastard! I brought a Blue Fluer to the biggest settlement on the East Coast. If I stayed alive two hundred years just to die of that shit, I'll kill you!"
"Angel!" Rebuked by 'Choly's blunted glare, the robot withdrew to the stock room door. "Think critically here, if you can, Jacob. We lived together before the war as well. Sure, we weren't mouth kissing and what all, but we shared food, spaces, what have you. If I were contagious, I would have been contagious then as well. What's different now than before? You underwent ghoulification. I underwent cryogenesis... And. The Melancholia."
The last bit parsed just as much as rhetorical as it did speculative. He lidded his progress to favor his texts. A memory clicked, and he flipped through the Merrick Index. Reading the data for the Limit 115 supplement, trembling seized him. The oral administration of Stimpaks served to curtail the chronic sequelae of the virus's systemic damage. The hallmark aftermath of the New Plague, endeared to the masses as the Blue Flu back in the day and coded medically as Limit 115, was extensive respiratory scarring and pleuric complications, but it could ravage any and all organs. It haunted him, to read that the patients for whom these supplements worked best were those whose sequelae had originated in viral alimentary damage, as the digestive tract yielded the most immediate route of uptake.
But it just didn't make any sense. If had contracted the New Plague, wouldn't the Pip-Boy show it? Wrestling with logic jogged memories of his hospitalization. What he recalled most readily and most clearly was picking up where he left off at Deenwood. To gain clearance to return to duty, he had to heed the medical biometrics of his military-issue Pip-Boy for any potential flare-ups where he'd regain infectiousness.
He hated the original flavor of the Limit 115 supplement, he recalled. And the Med-X's effect on his speech patterns frustrated his already shaky confidence in sounding the part of a fully naturalized American citizen. So he tried formulating versions with other flavorings, and other opiates. A pit dug into his stomach.
The room spun as the chromatic lights rolled holographic. The space undulated through what he perceived as red, gold, and green, reminiscent of poor television reception: but no one could bang this cabinet or tweak its antennae. On occasion, individual objects would linger in monochroma, only to roll through hues in rapid succession. A dull ringing bypassed his ears, and he felt it directly behind his eyes. He jerked to check the two armillary bulbs hanging in the stock room. The lights themselves looked no different than before: it was the space which mutated.
'Choly's breathing shredded into stuttering as the deep bone chill left him feeling outright frozen solid. He stomped at the RadRoaches that had squeezed under the utility door. He lurched back in his chair to slam his head and shoulders against the wall. He shielded his face from the foot-long insects now flying right for his face.
"Hold still."
He got whacked across the nose, and his glasses flew off somewhere on the desk. He didn't open his eyes until he could tell nothing was chewing or crawling on him. He rubbed at his nose. Sticks had rolled up one of the shorter lengths of single-feed paper, and slapped him across the face with it.
"Did you get them?" he asked the ghoul.
"Them? No, there was just the–" Sticks stopped winding up for another strike. "The one really fucking annoying mosquito... But it wasn't a mosquito. It was a Bloodbug. It landed on your face."
"What are you on about? Where did the roaches go?"
"There are no insects," Angel said. "Even the ants have gone underground."
When the pair gaped at the robot, the lights had stabilized to roll through its red-green pseudo-colors at a manageable low oscillation.
"Gentlemen, we really must initiate my shutdown protocols. Sooner, not later. I cannot initiate them myself."
"The fuck has gotten into you, Angel?" Sticks snapped. "Why are you of all people the one rallying to follow the dumb fucking rules in this place?"
Quailing dread infused its urgency.
"It may be local code, to turn off any robotics during storms such as these, but it's no mere local custom. This is a legislation with clear cause for its penning. You cannot put off my shutdown a minute longer. The Sacristan is on the Concourse right now, delivering the news to Mayor Knott that there's been some kind of structural damage which has compromised the building's hermetic seals. They're... well, they're discussing how to instruct everyone to brace for impact, as it were."
The two continued to gawk as all this sank in. Angel grabbed 'Choly by the right arm.
"Oh, Sir. Sir, please turn me off. I'm a higher functioning AI than an Eyebot. My malfunctions would prove even more unpredictable than anything Miss Cook described."
'Choly shied from Angel only long enough to retrieve his glasses. He sighed, and unfurled a length of his keyprong cord.
"I don't know what you understand this storm could possibly do to you, Angel, but I do know you hear more of what happens in this place than either of us. I... I trust your judgment. I do. I just... don't want to lose you."
"My best odds of surviving this weather undamaged is to suspend operation. I promise you, I am as fearful as you. But... it will only be for a few days, and you can power me right back on."
Angel set down on its tendrils, and extinguished its thruster flame. 'Choly opened its side panel to interface his Pip-Boy with its programming, and initiated the shutdown sequence.
"See you in a few days, chap." Sticks patted its chassis, keen to avoid getting pinched as its ocular lenses tucked flush into its perfectly spherical frame. "You probably haven't had a nap in two hundred years. Get some shuteye."
"Do take care of each other while I'm ouu–" Its vocalization halted mid-word when the processes finalized.
'Choly retracted the keyprong and stared at his motionless companion with a hollow compunction. A daze overtook him while Sticks tied Angel to the metal shelving, as per locals' instruction. The thought that this was undignified overkill loosed him from his internalization, but he didn't stop Sticks from completing the task to satisfaction. A low rumbling trembled underfoot, almost like deep extended thunder, and the pair looked to each other, as though to confirm they'd both felt it. They went to separate front windows to await the civil defense announcement which the soundproof glass would undoubtedly quelch.

[0] Stereoptikon: An early predecessor of animation, wherein a “magic lantern” camera with two or more lenses superimposed multiple different images, fading brightness of one into another to varying effect. Sometimes, the fade created a three-dimensional effect, while other times it made the static images appear to move or transform. (See also: the Karl Struss technique, in regard to shifting chroma rather than luminosity.)
[0A] Cotard’s Solution: There’s so many layers of metatextuality and allegory in just the title alone. It’s difficult to unpack it succinctly. Cotard’s Syndrome, as applied to the three marks of existence, uh. ‘Choly should be dead a dozen times over, and for it his mental health tends to veer hard into Cotard’s adjacent territory. Of course, here it overlaps pretty neatly with Angel as well.
[1] PRN: pro re nata. Medical idiom, as situation demands. On a prescription, it’s the opposite of instruction to take the medication at a scheduled regimen: medication PRN is instead taken as needed.
[2] New Plague (a.k.a. Limit 115 and the Blue Flu): The extended epidemic of this virus cropped up repeatedly for years before the Great War. The infectiousness and high lethality rates of the virus necessitated emergency research facilities which could develop inoculation. West Tek was able to provide partial inoculation and medications which could suppress the permanent systemic damage, in those who could survive contraction. West Tek’s various endeavors all converged into the Pan-Immunity Virion Project, the research of which would go on to be used to design the Forced Evolutionary Virus.
[3] 2068: Mentioned in Chapter 4 of First Instar, “A Drugstore Errand.” Angel grapples for an analogy to 'Choly's post-111 physical symptoms, and its closest point of comparison is the only time it recalls that 'Choly was ever hospitalized.

Rant about interstellar
i have before but ill do it again!
interstellar touches me for many many reasons.
first off, the entire premise and setting and the world building in it. the dust storms, the failing crops. the protagonist does say at one point- "humanity was born on earth. they were never meant to stay here" and that just,,, hits me you know? presently we've seen the emergence of no human exploration besides the probes and the ISS. there are plans but the same curiosity just seems dead. interstellar stretches that and shows us what would happen when human curiosity and the desire to explore would die. we'd kill everyone on the planet and soon starve ourselves. the blights- the illnesses- the dead medicare- that's a very bleak future, but a very real one. the movie does both its part about scaring the viewer about it- as well as giving us hope about wormholes and quantum data and singularities and how we'd save ourselves. you can see that the old generation is talking about their days and how better or worse it would be. in the end, on the cooper satellites, you see the interviews being played- and it really breaks me. that was a generation that thought it was the end. the end of human life. the final descent and that was it. and then they see the five dimensions and getting lifted and their lives are essentially turned around. this isn't just the older people though. we see that the gen z then, like cooper's son have also mostly been brought up to *live*. we see that he tries to get into school and actually get into uni and find a job in one of the remaining sectors of the world which still offer something other than farm corn- raise family. You see that the teachers also say this? they teach them to fight blights and sustain crops because they’re losing more and more to disease each year. Humanity’s slowly being packed up and demolished and they aren’t seeing it coming. at all.
then there’s the quote which is recurring throughout the movie:
“do not go gentle into the good night”
the professor says this all the time. as they’re leaving- his last few dying words- as they’re preparing. and you know what? i’ll say it. this is where the next important theme comes in. Desperation. When he initially sends them out- he hasn’t solved gravity yet, and he knows he never will. Not without the quantum data from a black hole- something again, he can never get. Which is why he implies that there’s a Plan B and cooper can see murphy again (this is also very important- scroll down for this). He breaks all their trust- and he knows he’ll die before seeing the end of the mission- and you can’t die with guilt, not really. He knows that he can’t be held accountable because he’s dead. He’s well aware that his plan is a hail mary- and it wouldn’t have worked anyways. He’s counting on Plan B, and that’s all there is to it. He uses the quote as a reminder to himself- because he’s torn too. He isn’t inherently evil, at all. He’s the precarious thread the entire mission dangles by- but he’s willing to risk that too. He’ll be long, long dead before humanity dies- or moves- and this is his last try.
Now for the second part of this quote. As I talked about before- the quote feels more like a reminder to himself- and not actually something that inspires hope in the crewmates. But ironically, it ends up becoming what guides murph. As the professor is dying, she tells him “you’ve been doing this with both your arms tied behind your back”- that’s actually when she finds out about his whole plan. This is the failure of the professor- but at the same time, it becomes the moment he passes the torch to murph. The professor died, knowingly sending his own daughter into the reaches of space. He prioritized his need to save humanity over the love for his own daughter. But, murph isn’t like that. When she finds out about this, she remembers the promise her dad made to her.
“I’ll be back when you’re the age I am now”
and now, she knows he’s lied. But he hasn’t done it on purpose. and she understands that. She makes it HER goal that they don’t go gentle into the good night. She knows that this is probably futile, but she’s going to try. and she’s not going to try thinking that she’ll probably fail- like the professor did (in resignation for plan B)- she’s going to try to bring cooper back.
Third, coming back to desperation. A bold, bold act of desperation is what dr mann did. (I have some qualms about the actor playing estranged astronauts- anyways). Him sending out that sensor- knowing that it will bring humans back to him, while simultaneously jeopardizing the entire mission, and possibly the fate of humanity. He knows what he has done- but he has gone insane alone- and he’d betray his entire cause to see a human face again. This movie really says something about what humans are willing to do. On one hand, you have a woman who singlehandedly saves them all- for human love, and on the other, a man who is willing to commit genocide (that’s what i think it is, dont ask) to see someone else. He messes up everything, deliberately, and goes from “the greatest and bravest man to walk the earth” to a “cold and desperate villain”. This theme has a lot to do with what is happening right now too. Forgive the activism, but we do have people who knowingly exploit and burn and ravage the earth, for their own good- and they’re insane to the point that they genuinely can’t see right from wrong. Sure, you could argue that he was motivated by the need to preserve your own life. But if you give his cause *any* context, you see how wrong he is. This is flailing human desperation, pure and simple.
Now, approaching the themes that actually make it as good as it is. Dr Brand is easily my favourite character in the movie. We get to see her as a brilliant scientist initially, and her arc- is perfect, honestly. For example, take the wormhole handshake- as their going through interdimensional space- where time isn’t linear and your brain gets fried if you try to comprehend it- she recognizes a *being* in that space. If you recall that scene, she reaches out, and meets *them*- someone she knows is otherworldly and entirely above humans (we later learn it is Cooper in the matrix- and i have things to say about that too) and makes contact. She suggests, as both a human- and a scientist- that it may be love that transcends dimensions. She makes first contact with beings that may be their salvation- or destruction- and i think that is definitely the peak of human existence.
She argues that love may be what connected the crew to higher dimensions, and I'll dare to say that she’s right. Love is what made Cooper try to contact murph. Love is what made them dare to save humans. Love was what got her there. She tells them to go to Edmund's planet- not just because she loves him, but because she also makes relevant points AND her gut. It might be stretching it to say that was why she was right- but it is worth introspection. Dr Brand represents the best of humanity and she does carry it, doesn’t she? She settles on the planet for ‘the long nap’ in the end. She tries to save everyone- like on the mountain planet- and she loves. She hopes and she trusts and is unwaveringly honest and courageous. This could become a Dr Brand stan blog for all I care.
Moving on
We have the ‘them’. These are the mysterious threads that tie all parts of the movie together. A black hole to a little girl’s bookshelf. Worlds galaxies apart. A very important thing to note here is that the characters recognize that this is humanity, just very, very far out. And most importantly, wise. This is a civilization who has surpassed the ordinary dimensions, and *mortal* time. They could’ve easily saved all of humanity and given them the planet they were looking for. But their entire ineffable plan, and only putting things where they were needed- was what made them greater than just someone who helps others. Only being able to get binary signals through an intergalactic wormhole, building bookshelves that become a huge metaphor for humanity trying to claw at knowledge- and actually slowly pushing the books forward. The ‘them’ weren’t ordinary humans at all. They definitely hinted and gave me a brief, fickle glance beyond what humans could be- raw possibilities.
Then, we have cooper. This makes it hard to write for him- and do his character justice- but I will try. His character, essentially, is brought down to selflessness, love, a brutal, brutal sense of humour- and the courage- the heavy, heavy courage to sacrifice himself. He’s also the polar opposite of what Dr mann stands for.
His first important point- in my opinion- is when the movie is starting. I didn’t walk in expecting this from him, not really. You see a dying earth- and this man is (alone in his fight, NASA doesn’t count yet) fighting the system alone. He fights for his son, tries for his father in law, and then the most important relationship- his daughter. He’s seeing an earth where not even *children* are curious, or willing, or interested in anything greater. He sees this in his daughter, though. Hence, the bookshelf- the gravity, and the plain curiosity.
I’ll dare to say that at this point, humanity’s a dying, dying flame. And what he sees in his daughter, what we see in his daughter, is a rebirth of potential. She has the human spark, so to speak. He sees that, and he makes promises, and is willing to bring the world to its knees to protect her. And he knows he might not be there when Murph burns strong, and bright, and becomes the saviour of humanity- but he hopes.  An important element is the promise, which I mentioned earlier, but it defines their relationship. The promise that he’ll be back when they’re the same age. They both know that it’s not true. They can see the lie, but that promise also empowers them to do what they did when their paths diverge.
Cooper goes to Mann's planet with the vague hope that he’ll be back in time. Murph does most of what she does because she thinks that it’ll bring her father back. Even towards the end, when Cooper willingly jumps into gargantua, a supermassive black hole- which is the literal heart of darkness, he does it in the attempt to save his daughter, and hopes she can get the quantum data at the cost of his life.
About Murph, we mostly see her through the eyes of Cooper in the beginning. A curious and lovable and stubborn tween who just wants to grow up with her dad and do their science experiments. Her perseverance is phenomenal- she loses her dad despite her warnings and asking- and realizes that her loss is something undefinable, but there. In a way, she grows to understand both her responsibility and her part to play, and why her father did what he did. The ‘ghost’ is another plot device- a mysterious figure who messes with the gravity and knocks her books down. And she sees a message there. She tells him about ‘don’t go’ and i can’t begin to describe how beautifully poetic and heartbreaking it is that they realize the significance of that at the same time, and how it ties together. It is hard for me to fathom that scene really- cooper is in an interdimensional matrix, inside a supermassive black hole, and he tries to tell his daughter two things. (a) trying to stop himself from going out and on the mission, which he knows is deemed to fail and (b) sending the quantum data, because that is what mattered in the end, anyways. The ghost comes full circle- and also says what he had to say, when it was most important. And for those who’ve seen the movie, i just really have to put this quote out there:
‘It was you. It was always you. You were my ghost, dad’
And in that, the movie completes itself. It talks about unfailing love, the peak and fall of humanity, and the potential of curiosity.
In this essay I will...

Greetings, FELLAS! It’s me, Cylibot! I thought I’d take a picture while we continue to build up the Base in Roboken. I asked Oh-1 if he wanted to take a pic with me but he said, and I quote, “Regrettably, no, the flash hurts my optical sensors.”
I told him we could, you know, turn off the flash but he was already back to work. Ah well.
Hope you’ve all been great!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Days 8 & 9 –
Yes, I’m still alive. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice my pictures and writings didn’t post. Fortunately, Tumblr saved the pictures I wanted to share, but it dropped about half of what I wrote.
On Wednesday, our class debriefed a bit more from Davines and started working on an exercise to incorporate what we knew about the company and its sustainability goals into a marketing campaign for their new product: a single shampoo. This shampoo comes in a very minimalist bottle with a very interesting quote on the front: “I went in search/ of a bad person;/ I found none as I,/ seeing myself,/ found me the worst”, and I took this quote to heart, and channeled a Patagonia advertisement called “Don’t Buy this Jacket”. I was very proud of my original advert and got a comment from Nora later that night; both she an Vincent were enthralled at how I made the very disconnected quotation on the front connect to the marketing of the product and Davines’ own shortcomings with reaching 100% sustainability.
Later that night, we took a bus to the small town of Valdagno, home to the Marzotto Corporation and birthplace of Italia Innovation co-founder, Marco. Marco gave us a tour of the old city, and the new “Social City” constructed by Marzotto during the 1910’s-40’s. Something he noted, and admitted, was that the town and company were both able to grow during this time, despite larger economic hardship, due to providing military uniforms for European powers.
It was interesting that a company so focused on textile production built educational facilities with no connection back to the company, and that would take students into other industries. No concrete answer was ever given for this, but my personal thoughts were that Marzotto used things like the engineering and music schools to attract more high-level talent and provide worker’s families with additional extracurricular activities to boost employee morale.
The company hit its peak in the 1980s and 90s, eventually owning Lanerossi, Hugo Boss, Nova Mosilina, and Fila, though due to (I assume) infighting in the family, these brands were eventually spun off, leading to the loss of 9,000 jobs in the region. Today, the small garment factory and textile factory only employ roughly 1,000 people, though we learned about 300 of those will be shifting to part-time work. Despite this, at a town hall on economic and social innovation we attended, almost everyone seemed to clap for the CEO – more on this later.
We took a quick water and wine break before meeting with the Mayor, and his goals for his town seemed to reflect those of both other smaller Italian cities and those that former US manufacturing hubs had. Part of his town’s problem stemmed from the fact Marzotto still owned all manufacturing assets they built, even if they were disused and in disarray. Likewise, the Italian economic crash lead to the national government helping itself to town’s rainy day funds, leading to a contraction of public employees and services. In fact, of 230 or so employees, the city had to fire 100 over the course of a few years. Furthermore, due to the burden of caring for the social city after Marzotto stopped funding these services, the effort of providing the same quality of life as 30 years ago has strained political and economic resources.
The most interesting thing we learned from the mayor is that young people made up the majority of his base, as he’s poured more funds into education and established a council (or process of) grievances for underaged citizens. He was still worried, when asked, that even with these steps, children would leave for bigger cities and more opportunities, especially as the youth unemployment rate rises in Italy. Interestingly enough, the older rate of unemployment has remained relatively unaffected despite the drop in Marzotto staff.
After dinner, we were invited to a town hall panel that included Vincent and Debra, but also had a writer from The Economist and Marzotto’s CEO, Giorgio. All of us were shocked at the warm welcome Giorgio received and the applause he got when introduced. This was increased when we learned of his disconnect with the people of Valdagno and how he views economic and environmental initiatives outside of Italy as the bread-and-butter of his operation. He delivered a canned speech containing a video and PowerPoint, with both focusing on social improvements in Czech factories and environmental initiatives in Australia and New Zealand. All of us students, and even Debra were horrified by his behavior during the panel, and I think we were too shocked to ask questions. This town hall stretched late into the night, and we got home at a little after midnight.
The next morning, we took a bus back to Parma and visited the world’s largest pasta factory – Barilla Parma. I saw a package of my favorite cookie, Pan di Stelle, on their display in the conference room and everyone from Barilla was shocked that a white kid from America was addicted to these cookies, and I was shocked we were going to have a presentation on their social and environmental initiatives around cocoa-producing communities.
We viewed several videos on their environmental and sustainability initiatives, then went for a tour of the pasta plant. Unfortunately, for both hygiene and corporate-secret reasons, I was not allowed to bring my phone onto the production floor, but everything was incredibly automated, delicately balanced, and delicious. Yes, you can eat raw, not-yet-firm pasta, and much was eaten. I considered this my “free sample”.
We learned that despite the increase in automation, none of the 100 workers on the plant floor were laid-off, but that all were retrained and that production doubled, leading to a 3-year payback period for the entire suite of upgrades. (Please watch this video on the cool robots:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkoiiS81goU) What was even more interesting was that even the 60-or-70 year old drying machines could still be used, and that they looked as new and as beautiful as the modern machines on the line next to them.
After the tour, we had lunch with their Head of Sustainability, some members of the marketing and HR teams, and a member of the Barilla family and ate some amazing ass pasta. And not just pasta, they had bread and fruit and meat – all things they championed through their “don’t diet, eat in moderation” campaign.
This campaign actually lead to an interesting discussion between Andy and I on how they could advertise the Mediterranean diet as the diet of moderation, but still produce delicious and addicting cookies. While not 100% solved, the aforementioned Pan di Stelle cookies have 37.4 Calories per cookie, which is less than the 53.3 per Chips Ahoy cookie. It also has fewer carbs (5g v 7.3g), less fat (1g v 2.6g), and even has some protein from the nuts used. On top of all this, the Pan di Stelle cookie is simply more filling, and so, one eats less of it. This is how we wrapped our heads around how a conglomerate like Barilla and its brands could justify making a detrimental product and advertise to basically, not eat it. People who enjoy it aren’t addicted like in America.
The social and environmental work they do seems to focus on the impacts of individual product lines rather than the whole company – Pan di Stelle helps farmers diversify crops and return back to polycropping with Bananas in addition to Cocoa, and also provides wells and educational facilities in regions they purchase from. The main pasta ingredient, wheat, now is required to be grown on fields that participate in crop rotation and that dedicate 3% to natural flowers and vegetation for beneficial insects, while also requiring a reduction in fertilizer and uses satellite and sensor imaging to determine what wheat is best for the planet and ourselves.
After a long day at Barilla, we returned back to Verona and had a late night in just drinking wine and making really good sandwiches with lunch meat we bought from the supermarket down the street.

Water war shifts to southwest Georgia as Florida takes aim at farmers

Christopher Worsham’s 5,000-acre family farm produces a sweet corn crop twice a year that’s sold fresh at grocery stores across the U.S. and Canada, made possible by southwest Georgia’s warm climate and water irrigated from the nearby Flint River basin.
It’s the latter that has proven to be one of the biggest constraints on his ambitions—and one of the latest flash points in the three-decade water rights war pitting Florida and Alabama against Georgia.
For the last seven years, under pressure from the litigation, Georgia has placed a moratorium on the permits needed to drill more cost-effective wells that Worsham and his neighbors rely upon in this sandy, drought-prone corner of the state. That’s driven up the price of land with well permits and made it harder for farmers to maximize or expand their operations.
“You can’t get financed if you don’t have irrigation,” said the 37-year-old Worsham, a fourth-generation farmer. “You’re not going to have a consistent crop and you can’t borrow money.”
The water wars enter a critical phase Thursday, when a Supreme Court-appointed judge in New Mexico weighs Florida’s request to freeze Georgia’s water usage at current levels through 2050 and cut it further during droughts. Alabama is watching from the sidelines but supports Florida, which wants more fresh water flowing downstream to aid its oyster industry in Apalachicola Bay after that industry collapsed during a 2012 drought.
Previous rounds of the legal fight focused on metro Atlanta’s water usage farther upstream. But lately Florida has shifted its attention to southwest Georgia, targeting a cornerstone of the state’s $13.8 billion agriculture industry. If Florida gets its way, Georgia’s attorneys estimate the damage to the state’s economy would be “severe,” costing between $335 million to more than $1 billion to implement and several times more in lost economic output while decimating farms in the Flint basin.
The Florida v. Georgia case will also set a powerful legal precedent in the eastern United States, which has largely been spared the fierce water fights that have become commonplace in the West, as climate change threatens to create even more water battles in the decades to come.
“Water truly is the oil of this century,” said Gordon Rogers, head of the Flint Riverkeeper, an Albany-based nonprofit conservation group dedicated to safeguarding the river. “Every time the Supreme Court decides one of these interstate cases, it’s building more case law that helps inform management for the next situation and the next one and the next one.”
Not far from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a modest collection of creeks joins together to form the Flint.
The river broadens as it meanders south through farm country and feeds into Lake Seminole on the Florida border. It’s part of a river basin that includes the Chattahoochee, which originates northeast of Lake Lanier. The Chattahoochee then flows along the Alabama border before converging with the Flint to form the Apalachicola River, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin is the main source of drinking water to more than 4 million people, including roughly 70% of metro Atlanta, according to one estimate. It also supports a broad swath of industries including agriculture, power generation, manufacturing, commercial fishing and recreation.
The current case before the Supreme Court represents just one of several winding their way through the federal courts after the states’ political leaders repeatedly failed to strike a deal on their own.
Florida is asking the judge in Albuquerque to enforce conservation efforts in metro Atlanta and “sensibly limit” future irrigation in farm country. It has zeroed in on agriculture along the Flint, where it characterized water usage as largely unchecked in a January legal brief.
“Georgia’s strategy throughout this litigation has been to try to minimize the role that its runaway consumption has played in causing those injuries (to the Apalachicola Bay), while pointing the finger at anyone and anything else it can think of—the climate, Florida’s own oyster fisherman, decades-old dredging activities, and so on,” Florida argues in the brief.
Florida peppered its legal filings with quotes from the Supreme Court’s first expert judge, who in a February 2017 memo chastised Georgia for not doing more to cut down on its agricultural water consumption, even as he recommended the court dismiss the case over a technicality. The justices rejected that first judge’s recommendation and appointed a new expert adjudicator last year.
Floridians say they see the impact of the water wars every day. While it was common to see hundreds of oystermen in the Gulf of Mexico’s Apalachicola Bay in past years, “you’d be hard-pressed to see anybody out commercially harvesting oysters presently,” said Georgia Ackerman, executive director for the Apalachicola Riverkeeper.
“We’re not getting (the fresh water that) we used to get, very simply put. The Apalachicola Bay has changed as a result of that, and not for the better,” she added.
In a recent legal brief, Georgia argued it accounts for 92% of the population, 99% of the economic production and 96% of the employment in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint basin but consumes “only a small portion” of available water. Georgia contends its water usage is “eminently reasonable” and that no cap on its consumption will get Florida what it wants because it didn’t sue the federal Army Corps of Engineers, which regulates the basin’s locks and dams.
Any mandate to limit water usage would have a ripple effect across southwest Georgia, a region still reeling from the wraths of hurricanes Irma and Michael, twin tornadoes in 2017 and President Donald Trump’s trade war with China.
“You have a lot of folks that are very worried about it,” said Christopher Cohilas, chairman of the Dougherty County Commission, from his office overlooking downtown Albany and the river.
If Florida wins, it could harm Albany. And “if Albany doesn’t make it, then turn out the lights for about 30 counties,” Cohilas said. Not only is the region a major agricultural hub, he added, but corporations like MillerCoors and Procter & Gamble have built manufacturing facilities in the Albany area “because of the water. Period.”
Irrigation has been nothing short of a godsend for the farmers in the counties surrounding Albany. It’s reduced one of their biggest risk factors—weather—and increased crop yields in a region that has long been a leading producer of cotton, pecans and peanuts.
John McKissick, a professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, credited water as Georgia’s “single most important competitive advantage” in farming during a recent state legislative joint budget hearing.
In the past, farmers had largely policed themselves, but recent droughts and pressure from litigation from Florida and Alabama changed that.
The state has maintained its moratorium on new irrigation wells in more than two dozen southwest Georgia counties. (Farmers can drill into deeper aquifers but some consider it prohibitively expensive.) It’s also poured resources into studying, tracking and mapping out agricultural water usage in recent years.
A 2014 law increased water efficiency requirements for widely used crop irrigation technology, standards that local water experts expect the region will largely meet. In metro Atlanta, the state is credited with the widespread replacement of inefficient toilets, limiting daytime outdoor water use and improving a leak detection and repair program.
The University of Georgia’s C.M. Stripling Irrigation Research Park in Camilla has helped develop and fine-tune apps that advise farmers on when and how much to water their crops based on weather forecasts and data from soil moisture sensors. The center also developed hardware attachments to irrigation systems that allow growers to control individual sprinklers electronically, which help further cut down on water use.
The sweet corn fields on Worsham’s farm in Camilla are watered using low-pressure systems with more efficient drop nozzles that can be controlled with a smartphone. His pecan groves are irrigated via an underground system that’s designed to cut down on evaporation by keeping the soil around the trees moist.
“Honestly, a lot of this we do because it saves me money,” said Worsham, who is also a board member for the Flint Riverkeeper. “I feel like we were trying to be a little more responsible with the water and show that we understand the value of it.”
Casey Cox’s Mitchell County farm, which borders the Flint, has also adopted many of the same low-pressure, sensor-based and digital irrigation tools.
The 28-year-old recently began training to take over operations at her family farm after working for the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District, a local conservation organization. She worries that water battles could dissuade more young people from going into farming and agriculture.
“There’s already a tremendous amount of scrutiny into agricultural practices in a way that I don’t think previous generations have really experienced,” said Cox, a sixth-generation farmer. “This lawsuit and focus on agricultural water uses brings another microscope into that.”
Cruising down a Mitchell County section of the Flint in a boat on a recent sunny afternoon, the legal travails felt downright distant. Kingfishers dove for their lunch. Spanish moss draped over the branches of nearby bald cypress and American sycamore trees fluttered in the light breeze.
Perhaps the most distinct feature of the southern portion of the 350-mile river is its limestone bedrock, which forms shoals that jut out of the water to create small cliffs on either side of the bank. The Flint’s limestone aquifer is porous—Rogers, the local riverkeeper, likened it to Swiss cheese—and its connections to the area’s streams and creeks allows the water system to restock when it rains after a dry spell.
But that’s only if Georgia manages its resources effectively and doesn’t draw too much water, especially during droughts, so that more surface water can flow to Florida, according to Rogers.
“We have a flow problem here in Georgia that’s caused by Georgians, is perpetrated upon Georgians and it can only be solved by Georgians,” he said. “We’re not waiting on this court case.”
After the case is heard in New Mexico, the expert judge will make a recommendation to the Supreme Court, which can accept his findings, reject them or opt for another round of arguments. Final resolution is not expected for months, if not upwards of a year, and additional federal cases all but ensure the Southeastern water battles won’t end anytime soon.
The Flint and Apalachicola riverkeepers are part of a coalition of 56 stakeholder groups in Georgia, Florida and Alabama that for the last four years has pushed for a more middle-of-the-road water management plan to “equitably apportion” the waters of the disputed river basin. Among their proposed solutions is a tri-state institution to serve as a “data clearinghouse” to help solve conflicts, build consensus, develop water management plans and direct the Army Corps to make adjustments to their water plans.
“We can collectively make ourselves happy… where you’re making money—through ag, a paper mill, a paddling outfitter or a quail plantation—and recreating,” Rogers said. “We all have to come to the water hole.”

AI and IoT Are Transforming Mobile App Development
Tumblr media
Nowadays everyone knows about IoT. Almost all devices these days, are IoT allowed. Arranging from appliances to vehicles and smart offices, IoT made an irregular change in the technical space. One of the main advantages is that IoT makes a specific device that is activated IoT can be accessed and controlled from a part of the universe. In short, a person can control his IoT enabled TV sitting miles apart.
In IoT, a collection of devices, to say things that have sensors and pre-installed microcontrollers, it is connected to a controller, we'll say a smartphone. The main purpose of these sensors and microcontrollers have to assemble data from these devices and to transmit to the control device.

A huge volume of data to be created and sent to serve the purpose of IoT. This measure of bulk data is then collected, separated and processed correctly. Conventional data acquiring means and its treatment are not to the height. That's why a new technology was introduced in the area of IoT. Be processed using machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer intelligence is self-learning, which is generally used in IoT to analyze data and make decisions accordingly.
After artificial intelligence has been presented in different fields in which the IoT is applied, the results were unbelievable. Some of them were famous accuracy, increased efficiency of interaction between the human-machine, increased operational efficiency and a true digital transformation. Healthy competition between companies and AI IoT affecting the way, where it opens new doors of opportunities that could not be performed.
The need for artificial intelligence in IoT is to assure that only the relevant data are collected. When the sensors send data in a large volume, the time needed to process these data will also increase. To reduce this amount and to ensure that only the relevant data are collected; a process is carried out with the help of artificial intelligence.
This process is called data mining. Data mining is carried out by different steps such as
Data integration is the stage where possible data are integrated. After that, all data is chosen which is called the data selection. The data selected will be a more or less important part which is a gathering based on the conditions of the storage device. Data cleaning is a method wherein the chosen data is cleaned and removed. Replicate and duplicate data will be removed during this method to ensure more storage. The cleaned data is then processed, which is known as the transformation of data. Data processing is made to ensure that it is available and standardized. The data is mined and is called data mining. It is used to estimate the models. As artificial intelligence is a prediction using accessible data and the algorithm, the more data the odds just to change the algorithm is high. As the algorithms will be increased performance and productivity of the system are also improved.
If you requested for examples where both live and artificial intelligence IoT mixed, the answer can be many. Some of them are self-driving cars, automatic vacuum cleaners, smart thermostats, etc. treat driverless cars the IoT data using artificial intelligence, which gives it more natural to understand the obstacles and jump the obstacles along the road and avoid the uncertainty of vehicles going into the accidents. This ensures not only the safety of passengers but also helps the vehicle to stay out of accidents. Where in automatic vacuum clean the house and can charge. Smart thermostats are Aiot devices that help one to check the temperature inside your home or workplace. Smart thermostats fall into the category of smart homes is another application of the IoT.

The project will track groundwater usage and allow farmers to sell their groundwater shares.
Tech giant IBM has partnered with the nonprofit organization Freshwater Trust and satellite-connected sensor provider SweetSense in a blockchain pilot project that will work to monitor and track groundwater usage in California's Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. The 1,100 square mile river delta provides water to the San Francisco Bay Area and southern California, and supports dozens of legally protected fish, plant, and animal species.
The goal of the project is to demonstrate that by using the cloud-based IBM Blockchain Platform, the pilot's team, along with additional research support from the University of Colorado Boulder, will be able to accurately measure groundwater usage transparently and in real time. While the immutability of the blockchain will ensure that usage numbers aren't being tampered with, the project's press release stresses that the information stored on the blockchain will also be beneficial in demonstrating how "sustainable pumping levels can be achieved through the trading of groundwater use shares."
According to the Water Education Foundation, pumping level issues with the Delta have resulted in the population decline of the Delta smelt, a fish found only in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Because the Delta smelt is designated as an endangered species, its decline prompted a string of lawsuits against the US Fish and Wildlife Service in 2009. To help protect against excess pumping, IBM, the Freshwater Trust, and SweetSense want to allow farmers to essentially tokenize their groundwater shares to sell to other farmers using EDCCs (aka smart contracts). The press release explains that "[i]ndividual users who require groundwater amounts beyond their share cap will be able to 'purchase' groundwater shares from users who do not require all of their supply at a market-regulated rate."
The release provides two examples:
"A strawberry farmer is planning to take the season off to prepare for an organic crop the following harvest. The farmer can trade or sell her water credits on the blockchain to another farmer. Due to a particularly dry season a winery realizes it will need additional ground water to avoid losing the vintage. The vintner can purchase additional water shares, without negatively impacting the aquifer."
With 64 percent of groundwater in the US being used for growing crops, and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta being used for 45 percent of the fruits and vegetables grown in the country, the blockchain pilot will be collecting and providing data for a very important resource both state and nationwide.
IBM has been involved in a handful of blockchain-related projects within the last two months. In early January, the company announced it was partnering with Ford, LG, and MineHub to launch two separate blockchain pilots focused on improving efficiency and transparency in the mining industry. Later in the month, IBM teamed up with Aetna, Anthem, Health Care Service Corp., and PNC Bank to collaborate on designing a highly secured shared blockchain network.

AgriFood Tech Startup Spotlight: FruitSpec - AgFunderNews
Tumblr media
Much of us take for approved that we can take pleasure in fresh fruit year-round and most likely have no idea just how much of a logistical feat this is for orchardists and fruit packaging houses. Naturally, understanding what sort of yield to anticipate early in the season can be a gamechanger for growers, loading homes, retailers, and even consumers.
High-value crops like orchards and vineyards have actually gotten a reasonable amount of attention from agtech start-ups and endeavor capitalists. Growers are using everything to improve various elements of their operations. There's also a big chance for start-ups to fix fruit growers' most significant discomfort: hungry pests that feast on valuable crops in the blink of an eye.
VCs are also making fruit-based plays. In Asia, Blue Sky Funds produced a "https://agfundernews.com/chinas-jd-leads-70m-round-in-online-fresh-produce-retailer-fruitday.html/"> a $ 70 million funding for a Chinese-based seller offering fresh vegetables and fruits.
Israel-based startup Fruitspec is wishing to take the secret out of yield prediction with its hyperspectral device vision innovation. Present yield estimates are based on extrapolation from manual counts of a couple of tested trees. As these quotes might differ widely in their precision, the results are destructive service decisions that cause a loss of income to all players, from growers to merchants.
"No-one really understands how much fruit they have in their orchard up until choosing. As all crucial service choices along the fruit worth chain are based upon yield quotes, not being able to accurately estimate your yield may lead to bad business efficiency," Raviv Kula, Fruitspec CEO, informed AgFunderNews. "Utilizing patented hyperspectral and computer system vision innovation, FruitSpec supplies clients with an accurate prediction of the amount of fruit they have in the orchard six-to-seven months before selecting when important decisions are made."
Did you know that AgFunder is one of the most active agrifood tech financiers? We are equalizing access to equity capital. Discover how you can invest with us.
FruitSpec's innovation consists of specifically designed sensor pods installed on any automobile that scans the trees in the orchard. Applied computer vision and a hyperspectral algorithm instantly count and quote fruit number and size, focused at the green fruit phase. Precise yield quotes use fruit packing houses and growers a service that enables them to make noise choices, which affect revenues and financial stability, without including to the workload.
Recently, the company announced that it completed effective field research studies with its option for fruit yields estimates/projections. The trials, which utilized FruitSpec's hyperspectral machine vision innovation, supposedly led to quotes that were more than 90% accurate.
We consulted with Kula to learn more about the startup's journey.
When did you launch and what development phase are you at presently as a company?
We have performed numerous international pilots (South Africa, Israel, Spain, Florida, California and Chile) with big clients. Up until now, the results show that our precision is greater than 90%. We prepare to release commercially in 2019.
Who is your target consumer?
FruitSpec targets loading homes and juice production customers. As the present organisation trend is to own the whole fruit chain or a part of the chain (i.e. a grower, loading home and juice maker) these customers will benefit the most from our service.
What are some of the obstacles that you've faced and how did you overcome them?
Next to innovation advancement, the orchard hyperspectral ground scanning is the greatest difficulty we had. Changing the right equipment to the ideal vehicle was a substantial obstacle, but we got rid of that throughout our field trials. What's been the
most surprising aspect of your start-up journey so far? The most unexpected element is
the willingness of consumers and clients'employees to help us in what we do."Yes, come and examine it, I'll help "was frequently the deal we received. My work experience is in other sectors, not farming, and this helpful mindset continues to surprise me. What's your fundraising experience been like? Who are your investors?
Fundraising is hard, despite the enthusiasm in the sector for
our innovation. We are lucky to have Trendlines as our primary seed financier. With the help of other private investors, we were able to progress and accomplish what we have today. What do you search for in an investor? To be part of the team!
It is truly terrific when an investor can likewise bring
organisation experience and another perspective to the table, in addition to the cash. Have you took part in incubators or accelerators? If so was it useful? FruitSpec is presently in Trendlines Agtech's incubator. The incubator is extremely advised. As a young company, you require all the help, good recommendations, support and
connections readily available. If you are in the best program you are blessed. Any guidance for other startups out there? My experience of start-up life is that you require to be an optimistic-pessimistic individual. On the one hand, you need to be optimistic that you will dominate the world with 3 individualsin your business and on the other hand, cynical, in order to predict all the things that can fail which you will require to fret about. In other words, my suggestions is to delight in the trip ... Do you have any rivals or quasi-competitors dealing with somewhat comparable developments? Our primary competitors is manual work. Some start-ups provide yield evaluation, however toward the end of the season when the worth of that data is low.

Is the Future of Agriculture in Robotics?
Modern combine in a field – Soon this will be an autonomous robot
Every single day we are reminded that the robot revolution is moving forward. From autonomous vehicles to automated cashier, the robots are taking a larger and larger place in our daily lives. And while our attention has been focused on robots in manufacturing industries, there’s one vital field of activity they might disrupt even more than anything else. Indeed, to quote the authors of one of the most renowned papers on the topic:
“[…]food is a necessity that must be produced at all costs. We therefore need either more farmers or more ways to produce food with limited manpower. The robots are coming to the rescue.”
Are you ready for the robo-agriculture?
The Agricultural Robotics Market Is About to Blow Up
Today, it’s the 2nd biggest market for professional robotics and estimated to be worth $2.75 billion. According to many researchers, the agricultural robots market should have an annual growth rate of over 20% until 2022. Eventually, it will reach a market capitalization of $13 billion. This spectacular growth will be fueled by the democratization of automated machines, by their ever-decreasing costs, but mostly by the diversification of the nature of the machines.
Today, a vast majority of robotics on farms are for milking cows or indoor machines. But in the very near future, robots will start working outdoors. You may have already seen some automated tractors or drones but, truth be told, these are still sparse initiatives. That being said, the day when we’ll see robots roaming through farms is closer than you can imagine. For instance, we already have advanced prototypes for feeder robots, surveyance, and weeding. A future à la Interstellar with fully automated farms might just be around the corner.
Tractor in a field
According to a MarketsandMarkets Research report, the most important applications will be in:
Harvesting Management
Field Mapping
Dairy Farm Management
Soil Management
Irrigation Management
Pruning Management
Weather Tracking and Forecasting
Inventory Management
It’s then safe to say that most of today’s farming is about to be disrupted by robotics.
Modern Farming is Broken and Inefficient
Starting from the premise quoted earlier, the robot-enhanced agriculture is also a question of survival. Today’s farming is far from optimal on so many levels. According to an FAO report, family-run farms produce over 75% of the world’s food. And about 75% of all farms in the world are smaller than one hectare. And those small farms are way more efficient than the large ones. Contrary to the rule of thumb that large-scale productions see a decrease of inputs per unit of production, farming is actually more efficient and productive at smaller scales.
Bringing robots and technology into the equation will improve all farms’ productivity. If we want to tackle the challenges of feeding the ever-increasing world’s population, we’ll need to make sure that the food production process minimizes the inputs needed and maximizes the yields. That’s something only robots can help us achieve. The future of farming is technology and data-driven.
Modern irrigation, while it got better, is still inefficient
Let’s take for example the modern irrigation. What do you think will be most productive? Using hundreds of meters of aerial pipes like we can see today in linear or central pivot irrigation…Or arrays of moisture sensors spread across the field, making sure the soil has the perfect moisture levels at the perfect places for crops to grow as productive as possible (without mentioning the use of weather forecasts to adapt the irrigation schedule to ensure as little water is used as possible)? Which brings us to our first point.
Agricultural Robots Will Be So Much More Efficient
The first obvious improvement brought by farming robots will be that they’ll be autonomous. While people will be able to focus their mind on more interesting tasks, they will be roaming the properties, relentlessly accomplishing their mission. Whether it’ll be surveyance, removing weeds and pest, caring for crops,… you can be sure that you won’t have to be behind them to get the job done.
Thanks to online databases and forecasts, combined with the data provided by external and internal sensors, they will have a complete understanding of the situation, far beyond what any human could. This will allow them to make informed decisions, and obtain the optimal outcome.
Furthermore, as all of these robots will be powered on batteries and electric motors, they will also have a positive impact on the energy consumption and carbon footprint of the farms. Some of them might even be perfectly independent thanks to solar panels on them. They’ll be an important part of a greener future for mass-scale farming. Besides, this will also allow for a quieter exploitation. Thus it will also reduce the noise pollution generated by agriculture.
Milking is already in majority done by milking robots
In a nutshell, by bringing artificial intelligence and around-the-clock activity, the robots will help optimize the yield of the farms far beyond what could humanly be possible. Maximizing the production while minimizing the costs in energy, water, time,… Can you imagine greenhouses with automatic lighting and watering designed to get the best crops for the minimal energy? Or tractors relentlessly roaming the fields with drones surveying cattle day and night and rovers on a permanent weed-control duty? Or watering hectares and hectares of lands using only the optimal amount of water for each square meter? This is what tomorrow will be made of.
Robots on Farms Will Improve Human Lives
Farm employment is far from a riskless job. It often exposes workers to pesticides, long working hours in the heat and sun, and poor sanitary conditions among other direct health risks. There are many serious health hazards affecting farmworkers. For instance, the Organic Dust Toxic Syndrome, caused by grain and silage dust, is a common illness among farmers. Less known, the exposure to excessive noise produced by machines can permanently damage workers’ hearing. Furthermore, most of the work is physical and outside. Thus increasing the risk of accidents caused by fatigue, difficult environment and weather, and aging tools.
However, only some of these risks are being covered by employment and health insurances. Some are not even covered by national legislation and regulations. By bringing robots to do these tasks, we will be reducing the risks on the human workers. Which will not only have a positive impact on their lives, but also on the people around them, and the society at large.
Robots will be able to farm 24/7 – No more driving tractors in the middle of the night
And obviously, as mentioned above, the more efficient the farming, the better we all are. Maximizing yield while reducing the environmental and societal costs can help us tackle the challenges of a growing population and the lack of efficiency of modern intensive farming. We can all agree that a healthier planet would be a very strong improvement in everybody’s lives!
There Are Many Questions Raised by the Farming Robots…
… And they might impact their democratization more than you could suspect. As with any technological revolution, many questions need to be answered. Today, the focus of governing entities is on the legislation and regulation of the potential agricultural robots. Due to the fact that these robots will be in an open environment and will probably be massive pieces of machinery. While it’s for obvious security reasons (you don’t want a pilotless combine to go on a road trip), it can create serious entry barriers to startup trying to break into this field.
youtube
Indeed, the certification process can already decide of the fate of a prototype. For instance, the Centéol developed by AgreenCulture is a promising autonomous robot weighing 300kg. However, until it gets its certification of conformity with the European Union norms, it can’t be officially released on the market. This is just one of many examples of speedbumps that the farming robots will have to overcome to become mainstream.
Governments Are Jumping on the Bandwagon for Agricultural Robotics
Seen all that legal blur and balancing it against the numerous advantages, some governments are starting to realize the possible impact and the need for action. Whether it’s the positive fallback of leading the way on that matter or the risk of missing the train on that new revolution. For instance, France, one of the largest agricultural production in the world, through its national agronomic and research agency IRSTEA, has announced in November 2017 the creation of an accelerator program “RobAgri“. Its goal couldn’t be any clearer: “Intensify the conception, validation, and dissemination of tomorrow’s robots“.
Investing in agricultural robotics is sowing the seeds of a prosperous future
One of the biggest government programs on that topic in the world, RobAgri gathers almost 50 public and private stakeholders in order to impulse a dynamic collective to conceive robotic systems fitting the needs of farmers and markets. Besides its workgroup, RobAgri is partnering with Naio Technologies to organize a yearly convention about agricultural robotics. The Forum International de la Robotique Agricole (FIRA) will hold its 3rd edition on December 13th and 14th in Toulouse, France.
Likewise, back in 2014, the UK set out an “agri-tech” strategy with over £150M in public funding to develop and commercialize agricultural technologies.
You Too Can Have Your Own Agricultural Robot
The robotic farming isn’t reserved to only big exploitations. If you wanna be part of the agricultural revolution brought by robotics, we can only suggest you get yourself a FarmBot. This open-source project allows you to build your own automated veggie garden. Powered by a Raspberry Pi and an Arduino board, it offers to bring a CNC head to your raised bed. Thanks to its open-source software you can access your crop from anywhere and make sure everything’s running alright. Thanks to its link with OpenFarm.cc and weather data, FarmBot can optimize the care of your crops. According to its manufacturer, it can save you up to $1,500 a year for your vegetable consumption. Or if you’re looking for a smaller-scale project, there’s the MoAgriS project over at Hackaday that will be a great start.

If you’re looking to automate your garden’s irrigation and watering systems, then look no further than the GreenIQ Smart Garden Hub available at RobotShop.com. Using data from weather services or from moisture sensors (3 are included with the base product), this hub can save you up to 50% of your water consumption. You can use its additional master channels for a water pump and a fertilizer tank. It can also take control of your lighting based on sunset and sunrise schedules. And obviously, you can control it from your computer or your smartphone from anywhere in the world. Or ask Alexa to do it for you!

Or if you’re looking to bid farewell to the mowing chore, then you should take a look at our catalog of robotic lawn mowers. Like the robotic vacuum cleaners you might already have inside your house, these robots will relentlessly roam across your lawn to make sure it’s always looking perfect. These are also about to become a common thing as their market is projected to reach values of around $3 billion by 2023 with a CAGR over 15% for the next five years.
Needless to say, whether you’re part of it or not, the agricultural robotic revolution is well underway.

So I take my car in today to get the O2 sensor fixed. The Honda Dealership quoted me at about $600 so I called my mechanic and they said they can do it for $540. But when they ring me up today it’s for $420.
Apparently they had a part in back that was a different brand but same quality and put that in instead because that’s $120 difference and I was like fuck yes.
Hopefully nothing else crops up, I still need to get my timing belt done.
