-- When Soviet pilots were forced to stay awake for 24 hours --
In the "worker's paradise" of the USSR, there were no independent unions. Why would there be in a socialist system ruled by the workers themselves?
But of course, the ruling class is always a class unto itself, regardless of how it styles itself. In the Soviet Union, therefore, the state was the boss, and the boss controlled your union, always to the boss's benefit. If that meant regulations were to be eroded or ignored, so be it: the boss knows best and your representatives won't have your back. Better to do what you're told and not question it, whatever the risks.
This is why the Solidarność battles in Poland were so truly revolutionary: Solidarity was an independent union that had a fiduciary duty to its members, no matter how the state's interests conflicted. Meanwhile, in the Soviet Union, you did not really have the option to quote union regs and demand a relief crew due to a lack of rest time. In the West, such a scheduling failure would have canceled the flight under any circumstances. In the USSR, an official whose career, bonuses, and prospects depended on minimizing delays could have easily retaliated against any crew who might mess with his metrics.
And so you did what you were told, hoped for the best, and knew that, at worst, the consequences would be swept under the rug.

W Warszawie upamiętniono nadanie pierwszej audycji Radia „Solidarność”
Powiedziałem wówczas, że dla takich chwil warto dać się złapać. Chciałbym jeszcze raz doświadczyć takiej sytuacji – wspominał we wtorek Marek Rasiński, współtwórca pierwszej audycji konspiracyjnego Radia „Solidarność”, wyemitowanej 40 lat temu w Warszawie. 12 kwietnia 1982 roku o godz. 21.00 z dachu wieżowca mieszkalnego przy ulicy Grójeckiej 19/25 na warszawskiej Ochocie Janusz Klekowski i…

Blessed Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko was a Polish Roman Catholic priest. He was one of the most influential figures of the ''Solidarity'' movement in Poland. He opposed the unjust laws of the Communist regime through his sermons and his monthly open-air ''Masses for Freedom.'' Thousands of people would attend his Masses and his peaceful resistance to Communism bolstered those fighting for change. In 1984 he was kidnapped and killed by communist security police.
''The duty of a priest is to speak the truth, to suffer for the truth, and if he must, to give his life for the truth. Let us pray that our whole life may be permeated with truth. (...) They can imprison me, arrest me, and cause a scandal, but I cannot stop my activity, which is a service rendered to the Church, the fatherland, and my people.'' - Blessed Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko
Popiełuszko’s example kept the Polish people’s hopes alive for a free Poland, which was realized a few years after his death. In 2018, the Polish Sejm adopted the act establishing the National Day of Remembrance for Steadfast Clergy. It is celebrated on October 19 as a public holiday passed in tribute to ''heroes, steadfast defenders of faith and independent Poland.'' It’s also a tribute to Popiełuszko.
''It is not enough for a Christian to condemn evil, cowardice, lies, and use of force, hatred, and oppression. He must at all times be a witness to and defender of justice, goodness, truth, freedom, and love.'' - Blessed Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko

Prague, 1984: an ordinary young man, Harry, arrives in a city where Orwell could have located the action of his famous novel "1984" to work at the Embassy of France.
The StB, the Czechoslovakian Big Brother satellite of the Russian KGB, which plans to recruit him as an agent of the communist secret services, submits him to a similar surveillance as the East German STASI in "the lives of others", in view, like the STASI with the young East German Martin in the "Deutschland 83" series, to infiltrate NATO in order to find out more about NATO's supposed plans for nuclear attack during this period, which saw a revival of the Cold War as Ronald Reagan came to power.
This book tells the true story of Harry, based on the files made on him by the StB.
As in the book of Gilles Perrault, "Dossier 51", it describes the investigation carried out by the Czechoslovak Communist Secret Service on Harry with a view to recruiting him as a secret agent for political intelligence purposes by directing him to a target related to NATO.
It reproduces exhaustive facsimiles of the main documents of this file, and in particular the conclusions of the StB survey and the proposed recruitment plan, as well as a spinning report.
It questions the motivation of the StB to mount an abortive recruitment operation on Harry, and among others the specific interest of the communist secret services for France.
It strives to better understand the motives of the agents involved in Operation Harry by investigating their profile through their files.
The author's access to the secret archive of the StB, which was only opened in 2007, allows him to present an exceptional testimony of StB methods, less known to the public than those of the KGB and STASI, of sinister memory.
This book also studies the troubled game of these services in the popular revolts that have marked the history of the communist bloc, from events in Budapest in 1956 to the Prague Spring of 1968, the spring of Solidarność in 1981 in Poland and the Velvet revolutions of 1989 which precipitated its fall.
Finally, it evokes the deep imprint left by the communist system throughout the former Soviet bloc, and in this respect provi …View full abstract
